[0:02][Music] thank you [Music] foreign foreign 55 of the Holy Quran made
[1:35]up of 78 verses and I think if you ask many Muslims
[1:38]in the world today what's your favorite sword of the Holy Quran
[1:43]a good number of them will say to you the very idea
[1:47]of rahma of course is very easy to digest anyone who displays
[1:52]Mercy or any form of care or compassion in one's life is
[1:55]always someone respected someone revered someone you feel close to and so
[1:59]when I saw that it's called Surat it certainly is different from
[2:04]a Surah being called Bara you know there's no coincidence that of
[2:09]the Holy Quran does not begin with rahma whereas this one may
[2:14]argue is the complete opposite this one is a chapter that wants
[2:18]to remind us of Allah's mercies whereas maybe looking at Surah 9
[2:21]or Surah like Bara or as it's known in other Circles of
[2:25]Toba is to dissociate from those who have been ungrateful for the
[2:29]mercies of God that have been showered upon them and I think
[2:34]that's the theme throughout this chapter this theme to try and open
[2:38]up the minds both at that time and today in relation to
[2:44]those who may have started to become a bit arrogant towards the
[2:48]mercies that surround them it affected the meccans and it affects us
[2:52]so when this sword is revealed within Mecca and Society if you
[2:57]were to take the opinion that it's meccan rather than madinian then
[2:59]there's certainly an uh you know an elite of the American society
[3:03]who have become so arrogant and so ungrateful of the mercies of
[3:10]God that you don't mention in any of the Traditions them talking
[3:14]about how kind God's been to them you hardly see in any
[3:16]of the Traditions uh mention of them being grateful and that's the
[3:22]Trap that this Surah is reminding us not to fall into that
[3:25]sometimes you might fall into this trap where you despair of God's
[3:29]mercy or your despondence in relation to God's mercy you know yes
[3:35]they are two of the worst sins in Islam because in one
[3:41]of them you're saying publicly you know what God can't do anything
[3:44]for me God can't change my situation I don't care what you
[3:48]say about how merciful he is I'm burning in Hell the other
[3:50]one may be someone who keeps it inside but still believes it
[3:53]that you know what deep down I don't think God's ever gonna
[3:57]change me or help me or restore me or or there's any
[4:01]way that he'll Salvage you know this situation that I'm in these
[4:05]are amongst the two greatest sins in the religion of Islam after
[4:08]shirk so after polytheism yes are amongst the greatest sins which are
[4:13]mentioned in the Quran and the Traditions when Allah has named how
[4:18]could you doubt God's mercy how could you even wonder about whether
[4:22]God's mercy will continue to envelope you so when the Surah is
[4:28]revealed in Mecca in one way it's a bit of a stinging
[4:29]attack on the uh hierarchy or the aristocracy of Mecca Society at
[4:36]the same time it's giving a sense of perspective to the prophet
[4:38]and the companions that don't worry we have you we've already showered
[4:41]you with enough of Mercies in your life don't worry about a
[4:45]thing over here when you look at one of the traditions of
[4:49]the holy prophet peace be upon his family he talks about the
[4:51]Surah being the Bride of the Quran and this metaphor of the
[4:57]Bride is interesting so you come to your wedding day and you
[4:59]see your bride and you look at her and I think the
[5:03]first thing you probably think is she's absolutely beautiful and I think
[5:08]when you're looking at this Surah it is an absolutely wonderful sword
[5:12]of the Quran when you're looking at your bride on your wedding
[5:17]day you think you know what there's a sense of all there
[5:20]wow I think that's part of the sort of when you feel
[5:25]the same when you're looking at the bride in your life you
[5:30]also see that you know what thank you God there's a sense
[5:33]of Mercy in what's been given to me today which may be
[5:36]others around me have not yet experienced and I think it's exactly
[5:40]the same with the Surah that when you read it and you
[5:44]see the number of mercies that man has been given and the
[5:46]world of the Jinn as well because Allah is constantly reminding us
[5:52]that he's speaking to two you've got the often repeated verse whenever
[5:59]God's speaking he's reminding both the human and the Jinn that you
[6:04]know what there's a lot for you to recognize in terms of
[6:09]mercies that are coming your way don't be ungrateful try and grab
[6:14]those and I'm not asking to thank me for every single Mercy
[6:17]that I've given you but say that whoever reads the Surah will
[6:23]shower upon them a Divine Bounty where it's as if they've appreciated
[6:28]every Bounty that has been showered upon them this Sora doesn't take
[6:34]somebody longer than 5-10 minutes to read a day and that's why
[6:36]you have a number of Allah ulama who would make sure that
[6:38]after Salah this Surah for them was a must because for them
[6:43]they felt like that disorder was one of the most humbling experiences
[6:47]anyone could ever go through and I underline experience when you're the
[6:51]sword of the Quran you can either read a Surah to write
[6:55]a PhD thesis you could either read a soda to for example
[6:58]write her Masters you could either read a Surah to prepare it
[7:03]for a lecture or you could read a Surah to feel a
[7:06]sense of an experience to feel that Revelation does transcend the physical
[7:13]to feel that Revelation was part of God's plan for how I
[7:20]developed my belief system alongside reason when you actually go into the
[7:27]realm of feeling that this is God talking to me this Surah
[7:30]has a completely different perspective so let's delve into the Surah my
[7:34]Dearborn sisters and this is the first part and let's see what
[7:36]lessons we can gain Bismillah we're all used to the word rahma
[7:45]when we're talking about Mercy if we're talking about thirst we're used
[7:50]to the word attach sometimes in in my massage I might say
[7:57]some might say some might say hunger Hunger from there a question
[8:09]is asked foreign Johan this ending where we hear on on what
[8:23]is the reason for this ending how does it work in the
[8:28]Arabic language in the Arabic language this is referred to as when
[8:35]you're looking at it you're looking at this idea of something in
[8:42]its most extreme so when a person says attach they're like you
[8:49]know what thirst means I'm proper thirsty I need some drink right
[8:54]now you know like on that real hot summer's day and you
[9:00]proper want something to drink and you want something cold and you're
[9:02]like you know what I don't care how cold it's even put
[9:03]ice in there that is a movement from atash an when a
[9:11]person says you know I feel some Jewel you know I feel
[9:16]some Hunger Iraqis will relate to this better than anyone when a
[9:19]person's like I know Johann I'm starving you're moving from Hunger to
[9:22]starving of course we exaggerate and that's why sometimes with there is
[9:28]a sense of hyperbole there is a sense of the most extreme
[9:31]partly one may argue a bit of an exaggeration but when I
[9:37]tell my mom I'm starving now I'm not starving like some of
[9:42]those poor children are on the shores or on some of the
[9:46]lands of Africa but no doubt what I'm trying to show is
[9:48]that look this is the most extreme of the feeling the Lord
[10:06]is the manifestation of the most extreme display of Mercy none comes
[10:15]near the Lord when it comes to manifesting his Mercy in many
[10:23]different ways you want to call your mom merciful how many times
[10:27]do you hear the example that comes forth where the Prophet peace
[10:32]be upon him his family reminds his followers that you know when
[10:37]you see a bird going towards the nest and it's got all
[10:39]its uh you know babies then they're dying they just want to
[10:44]eat and you can see their mouths open and that mother wants
[10:46]to feed those children from the very depths of Mercy Allah subhanahu
[10:53]wa ta'ala is more merciful to his creation than even the mother
[10:58]towards her children how merciful are our moms towards us you can't
[11:02]beat the mercy of our mothers towards us and yet you want
[11:07]to find the most extreme display of Mercy it comes in the
[11:10]fact that Allah is the very symbol of the most extreme manifestation
[11:17]of Mercy existence is a manifestation of Mercy our parents are manifestations
[11:23]of mercy and so therefore when a person talks of rahma on
[11:30]the basic level rahma is Mercy but the greatest form of Mercy
[11:33]or the most extreme display of Mercy or the most extreme manifestation
[11:37]of Mercy is that which Allah has given towards us in the
[11:43]form of existence and what emerges from existence now notice with this
[11:48]word there's something very interesting some have debated whether translating or rahma
[11:54]to Mercy is acceptable or not now someone says of course means
[12:01]Mercy but in one way one may argue that when you're looking
[12:05]at the root of the word Rahman you're coming towards this idea
[12:10]of Rahim many of us would associate the word with our womb
[12:19]relatives why do we say you know is this idea that I
[12:27]maintain a relationship with my womb relative notice within there there is
[12:33]Rahim originally means the womb and I ask you when you are
[12:41]therefore looking at a mother carrying its child in the womb the
[12:46]mother isn't just displaying Mercy the mother is also constantly displaying care
[12:54]therefore When God says the translation of the merciful could also be
[13:05]the caring a mother while the baby is in its womb a
[13:11]mother will make sure that even if she has to go through
[13:13]immense difficulties immense pressure immense trouble immense trial immense tribulation as long
[13:22]as that baby doesn't go through this then that is the most
[13:27]important thing for her imagine has this wonderful work which many of
[13:37]us have with us today and I really recommend all the listeners
[13:40]to try and get hold of it and that is of course
[13:45]the work that is known as explores the rights of God and
[13:52]the rights of the self and the rights of the tongue and
[13:53]the stomach and the private parts until it gets to the right
[13:57]of the mother now if you want to see the best explanation
[13:59]you could ever give to a non-muslim about the rights of the
[14:02]mother then look at imams description of the rights of the mother
[14:07]when he says and know that the right of your mother is
[14:11]that she carried you where no one else carries you she gave
[14:13]you from the fruit of her heart that which no one else
[14:18]gave you and she protected you with all her organs look at
[14:22]here the womb is a manifestation not just of a man's Mercy
[14:30]but a manifestation of a mom's constant care the beauty of AR
[14:35]Rahman is to highlight the constant Care on the most highest level
[14:39]that is given to us by God continues by saying she did
[14:46]not mind if she was the one who was in the heat
[14:50]as long as you were in the shade she didn't mind going
[14:51]thirsty as long as you drank she didn't mind losing sleep as
[14:55]long as you slept and know that you'll never be able to
[14:58]be grateful enough to your mom unless God blesses you even on
[15:03]Mother's Day give a million presents never enough even on her birthday
[15:07]give her the best of presence Never Enough why because of the
[15:13]mother that combination that comes together produces an unbelievable amount of care
[15:20]towards you an unbelievable amount of care towards that child put all
[15:29]of that together it doesn't come near an aorta of the mercy
[15:33]and the care that God has given us as human beings when
[15:38]the Surah begins with the word in Arabic was a word related
[15:49]to the womb and the care so next time you hear him
[15:55]you are meant to enjoin good relations with those who are womb
[15:59]relatives because the word mercy should envelope and Care should envelope the
[16:03]relationship between one another look I've got warm relatives who I haven't
[16:06]spoken to for a while but I'll tell you what the moment
[16:10]they text me we start talking like we've been together the whole
[16:13]year I don't mind just sending them Aid Mubarak why do I
[16:15]do this why is so highly revered within the religion of Islam
[16:23]because ensures that the sense of care and the sense of Mercy
[16:27]you become a manifestation of one of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's names
[16:32]you know by the way when you look at this name of
[16:37]course we are allowed to name Rahim but Rahman always has to
[16:43]be linked with ABD you can't just call someone Rahman they have
[16:47]to be known as well you look at this we all seek
[16:52]to be manifestations of al-rahman that manifestation comes in our Salat Rahim
[17:00]is one of the greatest acts of care that any human being
[17:05]can show to another human being my relative may not have wished
[17:08]me Aid Mubarak but if I am someone who wants to be
[17:13]a manifestation of Allah you know my cousin last year they never
[17:17]invited us to their wedding go from mahasana if you haven't been
[17:24]good to me doesn't mean I don't show Good Luck back towards
[17:26]you but the basis of that is that if my Lord has
[17:31]an attribute that is he is then I want to be a
[17:36]manifestation of that attribute where I constantly show care towards the creation
[17:41]of Allah and especially towards my family members I refer you all
[17:45]again foreign those who are related to me through the womb who
[17:58]I should always look for an excuse to build a sense of
[18:05]mercy and compassion between the two of us when you look at
[18:08]the line there are amongst my relatives those who have been bad
[18:17]to me dishonest towards me hard on me bring about a sense
[18:22]of love between us a sense of righteousness in our relationship a
[18:26]sense of care between us next time therefore When someone tells you
[18:31]why Don't You observe Salah remind yourself that denotes that we have
[18:39]a chance to enter the Abode of one of God's attributes on
[18:43]its most minuscule level when I see a relative of mine doesn't
[18:48]show mercy and care in terms of asking about me in terms
[18:54]of inquiring about me then I should try and be the one
[18:58]who opens that door up as well hence when we look at
[19:02]this we find that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala the beauty of is
[19:05]that he has displayed Mercy to all this creation irrespective of whether
[19:10]his creation believe in him or no that's why some Scholars when
[19:15]they examine which as we said is mentioned in the beginning of
[19:20]every chapter of the Quran to possibly be a reminder to some
[19:23]non-muslims that listen a book that begins with every chapter saying in
[19:28]the name of God the most kind the most caring the most
[19:30]merciful isn't a religion that really wants to oppress you or hurt
[19:33]you but when you're looking at the beginning people ask this question
[19:37]that if the word is divided or you know Rahman and Raheem
[19:41]what is the difference between every day in our Salah you will
[19:47]see us saying Bismillah We Begin what's the difference between we both
[19:54]know that there's a sense of Mercy somewhere there According to some
[20:00]Scholars denotes the idea of Mercy to all of God's creation care
[20:04]for all God's creation your atheists you may be for example a
[20:07]polytheist I've seen polytheists who have deserved who have received God's Care
[20:12]on an unbelievable scale I've seen atheists for example as well who
[20:19]have received God's care Rahman is to all his creation Raheem is
[20:22]to The Chosen Believers of the creation so there is a differentiation
[20:28]here that is made between who between showing God's mercy to all
[20:33]of his creation and between those of the chosen Believers when you
[20:37]sometimes see someone out there who for example is an atheist and
[20:41]you see them as a multi-millionaire and I've seen some Muslims who
[20:44]say that atheist how is it that God looks after them and
[20:45]makes them a multi-millionaire they don't even believe in God they don't
[20:48]even worship God they don't even show any love towards God God
[20:55]may see a things that we don't see of course Allah is
[20:58]the knowledge of the seed and the Unseen be Allah may give
[21:03]in this world more than we can imagine for them either it
[21:05]could be from a case that one of these mercies may make
[21:09]them reflect oh I said yazid it may allow you to increase
[21:14]in your sins and for them there is a painful chastisement but
[21:17]who are we to doubt or who are which question who Allah
[21:20]shows Mercy towards so Allah shows mercy and care to those who
[21:27]believe and those who don't believe in him and I think you
[21:29]see this in the in the supplications during the month of rajavan
[21:36]where we tell Allah oh you who gives to the one who
[21:38]loves him and the one who doesn't love him the one who
[21:43]believes in him the one who doesn't believe in him you always
[21:45]see these types of lines that um are recurring within our supplications
[21:51]so what do we have we have Bismillah creation to the chosen
[21:59]ones and that's why we look around us and we'll notice that
[22:03]every single literally living being on this Earth in one way or
[22:09]the other as a recipient of Allah but in another way we
[22:11]recognize that everything is enveloped or is encompassed by Allah's Mercy hence
[22:17]that first line that requires a lot of reflections Mercy envelopes everything
[22:33]the plant is receiving Allah's care animals are receiving Allah's care humans
[22:39]are receiving Allah's care solar system receiving Allah everything is receiving or
[22:44]is under the guidance of the care of Allah yet I ask
[22:48]you and I leave you with this one particular question in this
[22:52]world if Allah's Mercy let's say was divided into a hundred portions
[22:57]with all the mercy that you see surrounding us how much do
[23:02]you think would be the amount out of that 100 portion or
[23:04]the fraction out of that 100 that we're receiving in this world
[23:07]50 out of 160 out of 100 the very fact that we
[23:12]can breathe and talk and eat and walk and so on so
[23:14]how what portion do you think I have 100.
[23:16]discuss this rasulullah said if Allah's portion is divided into a hundred
[23:25]portions 1 100th is that which surrounds Us in this world the
[23:29]other 99 portions will be in the Hereafter imagine and people say
[23:34]to me this is our Lord who wants to send us to
[23:36]hell I reply by saying that you know what if this is
[23:41]1 100th then I'm looking forward to the 99 of the hereafter
[23:43]1 100th you start writing a list just right now if you've
[23:49]got a pen and paper write a list of all the mercies
[23:51]that you feel human beings are surrounded by and the care that
[23:57]you feel human beings are receiving from Allah and believe you me
[24:01]there'll be so many and that's just one one hundredth of the
[24:04]mercies that have been distributed to us the other 99 will be
[24:10]distributed on the day of judgment and indeed in the hereafter and
[24:14]that for me was always a source of Solace for us Allah's
[24:22]Mercy is always there for those who feel that you know what
[24:25]I've seen too much there's no way back look at this wonderful
[24:31]eye on Surah 39 of the Quran verse 53 Bismillah say to
[24:37]my servants who have been extravagant over themselves do not be despondent
[24:43]of Allah's Mercy whatever you do don't be despondent of God's mercy
[24:52]and Allah forgives all sins in one eye of the Quran reminding
[25:04]us that you know what don't think that the doors of my
[25:07]mercy and compassion and Care ever closed I named the Surah al-rahman
[25:10]I began that Surah with Rahman I want you to always remember
[25:15]that your enveloped with my rahma and I want you to always
[25:18]remember that whatever sin you've committed I do not care how big
[25:21]it is so great that the path back towards me is so
[25:29]easy for all of you to Traverse say that therefore to those
[25:35]friends of yours who sometimes tell you that you know what I've
[25:38]seen so much there's no way God's gonna shower me with any
[25:42]Mercy always remind them of the beginning of the Surah and remind
[25:45]them of Surah 39 53 that God wanted to remind us that
[25:50]never doubt my Mercy I'm the one who allowed a virgin to
[25:52]give birth when no man had touched her I'm a man who
[25:55]allowed a man to try I am the Lord who allowed a
[25:58]man to Traverse the heavens and none of you were able to
[26:00]do this and none of you were able to come near it
[26:04]I am therefore not subject to the laws of cause and effect
[26:07]my Mercy encompasses everything my Mercy is available for everyone shallah join
[26:12]me in the next session when we continue in part two of
[26:18]the tafsir of Surat Allah [Music] thank you
