[0:00][Music] foreign i begin in the name of the almighty god the
[0:20]compassionate the merciful the one who has created everything in utmost perfection
[0:27]and may the peace and blessings of the almighty god be upon
[0:31]his pure and beloved messenger the peak of his creation the symbol
[0:36]of humanity the holy prophet muhammad and his immaculate progeny of the
[0:49]bait peace be upon them especially the leader of our time the
[0:52]awaited savior al-imam al-may allah hasten his reappearance and make us all
[1:02]amongst the sincere and dedicated servants respected brothers and sisters as we
[1:12]conclude as we conclude the four series that we have had in
[1:21]this month we started with astrology and horoscopes then we examined manifestation
[1:27]last week we examined the islamic perspective on dreams and tonight we
[1:36]have saved i don't know if i can say the best for
[1:38]the last but another interesting one for tonight which is the evil
[1:46]eye something that we've heard since we have been growing up you
[1:50]find some people are extremely obsessed with the evil eye their whole
[1:54]life revolves around the evil eye so it's important to have an
[2:01]islamic discussion on the evil eye to start off our discussion i
[2:09]will share with you a verse in the holy quran that has
[2:14]been used by a number of scholars historically to establish a basis
[2:22]for the eye that there is something called the evil eye this
[2:29]verse is verse 51 of suratul allah states bismillah the translation of
[2:50]the of this verse is that when the disbelievers the pagans when
[3:00]they heard you reciting our verses you're reciting the quran the remembrance
[3:06]of allah what do they do they make you slip with their
[3:13]eyes they make you fall trip slip with their eyes and they
[3:22]say you are insane that's what the meccan said about the prophet
[3:26]sallallahu alaihi what's the tafsir of this verse what's the meaning of
[3:31]this verse how did they try to make him slip with their
[3:38]eyes there are three common tafseers if you look at the scholars
[3:44]of the exegesis of the quran that's the quran there are three
[3:48]main opinions here the first one states this is not talking about
[3:56]anything supernatural anything unseen what we know as the evil eye this
[4:02]is talking about something natural that enemies have towards their enemies these
[4:07]pagans hated the prophet sallallahu alaihi so their eyes were filled with
[4:14]anger and rage and they wished that he would slip and fall
[4:19]and fail that's the meaning of the verse when they look at
[4:26]you ya rasulallah their eyes are so filled with rage and anger
[4:31]and hatred they wish that you'd fail and they tried to make
[4:35]you fail but allah of course protects you this is the first
[4:41]stepsir the second tafseer says no this verse is not talking about
[4:44]something natural that enemies do it's something beyond that it's the evil
[4:49]eye they try to harm you with their evil eye through their
[4:56]jealousy and hatred when they see you successful they get jealous they
[5:01]hate you they loathe you they despise you now that evil nature
[5:10]that they have is communicated through their eyes when they look at
[5:15]you they look at you with hatred that tries to harm you
[5:20]they try to make you slip with their evil eye this is
[5:25]the second tafsir the third tafseer is really interesting the third tips
[5:31]here says they try to hit you with the evil eye but
[5:35]not out of jealousy and hatred out of amazement and wonder when
[5:42]they hear you recite the beautiful verses of the holy quran they're
[5:47]inspired they're in awe they're amazed and because of their amazement they
[5:57]make you slip the quran was very captivating sometimes the prophet salallahu
[6:04]would read the quran in the midst of the night in his
[6:06]home these mushriks they would gather around his house they're trying to
[6:10]kill him they're his enemies they gather around his house and they
[6:17]would listen to his quran for hours and hours that's how captivating
[6:20]it was so they're so amazed that their amazement makes you fall
[6:26]that's part of the evil eye when you're amazed at something wow
[6:30]this is so amazing you make that person fall now the verse
[6:35]is saying look at how ironic this people are when they hear
[6:42]the quran they're amazed but then they call you majnun they call
[6:45]you insane how does that add up if you're amazed by this
[6:50]quran then why are you calling the one who brought the quran
[6:53]as being insane and majnun that makes no sense so the the
[7:00]third tipster states it's also the evil eye but not out of
[7:04]hatred and jealousy out of amazement and wonder they make you slip
[7:09]yet they still call you majnu look at their arrogance look at
[7:13]the paradox look at the irony these are three main tafseers that
[7:19]we have about this verse and historically you'll find many people you'll
[7:22]find even scholars who have said yes there is a basis for
[7:24]the evil eye based on this verse another verse that has been
[7:31]coded as as being as serving as a basis for the evil
[7:33]eye is the verse that our brother recited in the quranic recitation
[7:38]the last verse in the quran what's the very last verse in
[7:44]the holy quran now what's the last verse of the surah before
[8:00]it um the theme of these two chapters allah protect me from
[8:05]evil the evil of the humans the evil of the jinn and
[8:10]the evil of the jealousy of the one who's jealous there's one
[8:13]hadith that we have in our tafsir that says the jealousy of
[8:17]the one who's jealous is the i they look at you with
[8:19]jealousy and so they generate evil towards you this is one tafsir
[8:27]of this verse as well so when you look at the holy
[8:32]quran there are verses that have been cited to support this whole
[8:35]concept of the evil eye so let's have a discussion on it
[8:41]tonight my dear brothers and sisters to better understand this topic from
[8:44]an islamic perspective now historically people have believed in the evil eye
[8:53]for thousands of years if you look at the writings of the
[8:55]greeks they mentioned the evil eye if you look at the writings
[9:00]of the romans they mentioned the evil eye the egyptians others around
[9:07]the world you find that historically many people did believe in the
[9:15]evil eye if you go to central america parts of south america
[9:21]you find until today the belief in the evil eye is very
[9:24]prevalent in puerto rico when newborns are born they bring them some
[9:33]sort of lucky charm called the azabache and they give it to
[9:39]their little kids to the newborns to protect them from the evil
[9:43]eye over 35 of the cultures around the world believe in the
[9:48]evil eye so it's a global phenomenon even here in the west
[9:52]in the u.s in the last few years we see that this
[9:55]has gained a lot of momentum you see celebrities wearing these annulettes
[9:59]right that blue eye thing in order to ward off some evil
[10:05]eye so a lot of people do actually believe in it now
[10:08]some cultures also tell you they're experts in breaking the evil eye
[10:12]like the mexicans one common way of breaking the evil eye in
[10:18]mexico is for you to bring a raw egg you have a
[10:23]bowl under it filled with water you break the egg and then
[10:29]some formations are made with the yolk of the egg they look
[10:34]at those formations those formations will tell them the gender of the
[10:39]one who inflicted the evil eye and they'll tell you many things
[10:43]about that person they firmly believe in that by the way i've
[10:46]seen this practice even in the middle east in some parts of
[10:50]the middle east we were one place one day we were at
[10:54]a place and they brought this egg and they did some weird
[10:56]things on it and i told them what are you doing what's
[11:02]all this you know chaos about the egg they're like yeah we've
[11:04]been inflicted with some evil eye with some magic and we're breaking
[11:08]it so people around the world have different ways of dealing with
[11:15]the evil eye with black magic with jealousy but this is one
[11:19]common one so you find that historically people have believed in this
[11:25]even the bible mentions it look at the book of proverbs there
[11:30]is a verse in the bible that says do not eat from
[11:35]the table of a person who has an evil eye and don't
[11:40]want their meat so the quran is so the bible even warns
[11:44]people from those who have the evil eye so this is definitely
[11:50]an important discussion that i would like to share with you tonight
[11:53]and inshallah we'll make this interactive we'll hear from your experiences and
[11:58]your perspective on this now let's start by examining what is it
[12:03]that we have in our hadith because the quran that verse that
[12:07]i recited for you is not that clear right those evil kuffar
[12:13]the disbelievers they want you to slip with their eyes it can
[12:19]have a number of tafsirs so at the end of the day
[12:22]someone can say there's nothing conclusive in the quran about it nothing
[12:28]clear so what do we have in our hadiths do we have
[12:30]any authentic hadiths about the evil eye before we examine how it
[12:37]works my dear brothers and sisters both sunnis and shias have narrated
[12:40]many hadiths about the evil eye in the world of allah and
[12:47]their hadith literature they have sahih hadiths they have hadith and muslim
[12:51]in these sources that they consider sahih their chain according to their
[12:58]standards it's sahih so the sunnis definitely believe in these hadiths because
[13:03]the way their hadith system works it's an authentic true hadith for
[13:09]them and they have many such hadiths what about us the followers
[13:15]of the beat do we have any hadiths in our sources that
[13:20]refer to the eye i will share with you some hadiths here
[13:24]that speak about the i and then we'll see whether these hadiths
[13:28]are authentic or not and how does this even work some people
[13:31]say say it is this even compatible with the justice of god
[13:34]that you just inflict damage on someone with your eyes so here
[13:40]are some hadiths the first hadith that i'll share with you is
[13:44]mentioned by the author of majma al-bayan al-bayan is an old book
[13:50]of tafseer by atabarsi shia scholar he mentions this hadith he says
[14:15]alaihi she came to the prophet according to this hadith she told
[14:21]him ya rasul allah the children of jaffa are afflicted by the
[14:28]eye they're weak they get sick they're afflicted and affected by the
[14:33]eye so should i recite a specific dua to protect them write
[14:39]a dua and let's say have them wear it on their arms
[14:45]should i do anything the prophet sallallahu alaihi states the prophet said
[14:55]yes the iron is very effective it's very powerful so do those
[15:01]prayers for your children now if we go by this hadith and
[15:06]we assume the hadith sahih this is proof that there is something
[15:09]called the evil eye because asma brings this to the prophet's attention
[15:13]he doesn't tell her no this is a this is a myth
[15:17]this is a legend the prophet acknowledges it but is this a
[15:25]sahih hadith we shias don't have an authentic chain for this hadith
[15:29]you'll find this hadith primarily in sunni sources yes some of our
[15:36]shia scholars have mentioned it in their books but we don't have
[15:40]like a valid sahih hadith that confirms this in the book of
[15:42]kafi or those earlier sources so scholars are split on this issue
[15:48]some scholars will tell you yeah i accept this hadith it seems
[15:51]authentic other scholars will tell you no it doesn't have a strong
[15:56]chain so i cannot verify that it's a sahih hadith but this
[15:59]is one common hadith that's cited for this discussion the second one
[16:05]is what does that mean the i is true many scholars have
[16:21]understood that the evil eye and the effect of the eye is
[16:25]true there is a reality behind it it does have an effect
[16:29]so this is one statement in that could be used to make
[16:36]the claim that the evil eye does have a basis in our
[16:42]religion the third hadith is one that our scholar al-kafi he has
[16:45]a book of dua he is one of the scholars of the
[16:49]past he mentions this hadith he says once jibrael descended on the
[16:53]prophet and he saw that the prophet sallallahu alaihi was depressed so
[16:58]he told him ya rasool allah why are you depressed the prophet
[17:03]told jibril hassan and hussain have been struck with the i and
[17:08]that's why i am depressed so jibril tells the prophet ya rasulullah
[17:16]there is truth behind the eye but here's the protection that allah
[17:20]has sent for you recite this dua for them oh allah the
[17:28]one who has the great kingdom well men your words are complete
[17:45]and the prayers are answered from the jinn and from the eyes
[18:02]of the people so this is also one hadith that has been
[18:04]cited to say that there is something called the evil eye another
[18:10]hadith this one's really powerful this might send a chill down your
[18:18]spine this hadith has been attributed to rasulullah in which the prophet
[18:23]states the eye is so powerful it can bring a person into
[18:33]his grave meaning it can kill him and it can bring a
[18:39]camel into a pot meaning it will kill the camel so this
[18:43]has been attributed to the prophet again do we have a sahih
[18:47]solid chain scholars dispute that some scholars say no it's found in
[18:52]hadith books but we cannot verify whether the prophet actually said that
[18:56]another hadith is in the book from the prophet sallallahu alaihi sunnis
[19:06]have also narrated this hadith they accept it it's attributed that the
[19:12]prophet said if you can have underground news about the world of
[19:22]graves and why people die you would see that most of the
[19:32]people who have died are because of the i'm because of the
[19:35]eye because the is true so now we have these hadiths my
[19:44]dear brothers and sisters what's our observations number one even though some
[19:52]scholars have said that we cannot verify the chain of each single
[20:00]hadith but for someone to completely dismiss all these hadiths that's difficult
[20:05]to be honest sudhis have narrated them they appear in a number
[20:11]of our shii resources so for someone to come and confidently say
[20:15]this is all false it's a myth it's a legend all these
[20:19]hadiths are false scholars don't do that even though scholars who cannot
[20:23]verify the chain of these hadiths they're like it's possible that there's
[20:26]something called the i'm we don't exactly know how it works we
[20:31]don't know how important it is how much it affects us but
[20:33]there is something called dying a lot of scholars therefore do believe
[20:37]there is something called the evil eye it doesn't mean that it's
[20:44]responsible for all of your miseries as some people claim everything that
[20:47]happens to them they fail they don't work properly they cause fights
[20:53]they ruin their families and then when you ask them what's going
[20:56]on why are you acting irresponsible yeah say that's dying all these
[21:00]people in the community you know what gaddafi said when he was
[21:06]losing his government who remembers when there was a rebellion against him
[21:12]he's a dictator no doubt you know what he said does anyone
[21:18]recall what he said he said this on on on public tv
[21:21]he said that our society was healthy and strong we've been hit
[21:29]with the evil eye and that's why we're in turmoil there are
[21:32]some people they'll try to blame everything on the evil eye that's
[21:35]not right but scholars generally to an extent do accept there is
[21:41]something called the evil eye it does have some sort of impact
[21:45]so now let's analyze how does this work assuming we do really
[21:51]have something called the evil eye how does it work and how
[21:56]do we protect ourselves from that someone objects and says is this
[22:04]even compatible with the justice of god we know allah is just
[22:08]and he's merciful i sit here and i just inflict this evil
[22:12]eye on someone and make them miserable make them sick destroy their
[22:16]property how does that work how would you respond to that assuming
[22:21]the evil eye is true based on these hadiths and a number
[22:26]of scholars who have accepted them how do we reconcile that with
[22:33]the justice of allah any thoughts is it possible that god would
[22:38]allow for that ah yes sister okay so a lot of calamities
[22:50]happen in life and this is just one means that's a very
[22:53]good observation my dear brothers and sisters here in this dunya allah
[22:57]subhanahu ta'ala has allowed us to harm one another because he's trying
[23:03]us he's given us free will now someone will tell you just
[23:08]like allah allowed you to hurt someone physically emotionally psychologically you could
[23:13]hurt someone right someone can take a gun and shoot an innocent
[23:18]person doesn't god allow that god allows that it happens every day
[23:24]because allah is trying us we're going through a period of trial
[23:29]so allah allows us to harm one another to begin with now
[23:33]sometimes the heart is the harm is physical you can see it
[23:36]like a bullet or a knife sometimes you can't see it with
[23:42]your eyes like what well other than words but like actual impact
[23:46]physically that you can't see with the eye any examples today where
[23:50]you could harm someone like that [Music] facial expressions you can hurt
[23:57]someone yes making a sickness okay like a virus okay let's say
[24:04]you have covered and you go and you cough in someone's face
[24:08]yeah you'll harm them you'll infect them with the with the virus
[24:12]right or if you sneeze exploding a bomb in that place people
[24:16]will get scared if they know you have covered and you sneezed
[24:21]another way is radiation let's say i have an x-ray machine and
[24:25]you don't see it i'm sitting there and you know emitting this
[24:30]radiation and to destroy you and cause cancer in you technically can't
[24:34]we humans do that of course we can why does allah allow
[24:38]that it's a test it's a trial it's a trial for the
[24:41]one who suffers to see if they're patient allah elevates their status
[24:44]it's a trial for the one who's afflicting the pain and damage
[24:47]because allah will seek revenge from them it's a trial so just
[24:52]like you could use a device and emit radiation on someone and
[24:57]hurt them there is something about the evil eye that it emits
[25:00]something that damages other people so the response is this is not
[25:05]necessarily defying the justice of allah subhanahu ta'ala it's still part of
[25:12]the system that allah subhanahu ta'ala has created that's the first point
[25:17]here the second point here why has allah allowed for that what's
[25:21]the wisdom why assuming this is all true why would god allow
[25:27]for that what is the wisdom behind it here's one thought think
[25:34]about it normally you're told that the iron happens in moments of
[25:40]a job or jealousy hatred a job is when you're amazed you
[25:47]pass by this mansion your friends invite you you know he just
[25:50]bought the two million dollar house you go and you see the
[25:52]beautiful architecture of the house the rugs the swimming pool the landscape
[25:59]and you're just so amazed you say wow this is a beautiful
[26:05]house when you say wow we're told culturally that asap you just
[26:12]inflicted them with the eye now something bad is going to happen
[26:16]next day his son almost died drowning in the swimming pool yeah
[26:21]that person yesterday he came to my house and he inflicted me
[26:24]with the i assuming this is real what's the wisdom in allah
[26:31]allowing that here's one response think about it when you see something
[26:37]and you're amazed sometimes you forget that allah is the one who
[26:44]gives and sustains and so you are in awe you're shocked you're
[26:51]amazed wow this is a beautiful house forgetting that allah is the
[26:55]one who gives people because in that moment you forgot allah you
[27:02]generated evil in the universe because whenever we forget god evil is
[27:07]generated from us that evil has a real impact it could break
[27:13]something it could harm someone that is why the hadith from the
[27:19]prophet salallahu alaihi states if you see something from your brother you're
[27:22]a djibouka you love it you like it immediately say masha allah
[27:26]immediately say masha allah whatever allah wills this is from allah there's
[27:32]no power by allah the minute you say that it stops the
[27:37]evil eye because you remembered god now you're generating goodness in the
[27:43]universe you're emitting iman you're radiating faith so those scholars who accept
[27:50]the evil eye they'll tell you no there is wisdom behind it
[27:53]allah wants to train us whenever you see anything don't emit negative
[27:59]energy by forgetting who's in charge who's the one who gave you
[28:05]your friend the beautiful thing that they have the number that they
[28:10]have now this is the first type of jealousy if you love
[28:15]your friend you like them you're not their enemy and you're amazed
[28:18]at something that they have the second type of jealousy because we
[28:24]have two types you have the jealousy of the hater and you
[28:31]have the you know you have the the jealous hater and the
[28:35]let's call him the zealous lover i'm coining these terms by the
[28:41]way we have two types of jealousy sometimes you inflict the evil
[28:44]eye because you're amazed at something but that person is a person
[28:47]whom you like you don't have enmity towards them and then sometimes
[28:52]you inflict the damage of the evil eye when you hate someone
[28:55]out of jealousy now why would allah allow that to inflict damage
[29:01]assuming this is all true what's the wisdom behind it because when
[29:05]you have hatred for a fellow human being and you're jealous and
[29:11]you wish they don't have that you're emitting evil intentions in the
[29:14]universe that's an evil intention that evil intention causes negative energy that
[29:20]we call evil eye so that's another way of understanding the evil
[29:28]eye and why allah subhanahu ta'ala would allow that now what exactly
[29:35]happens in the process of inflicting the evil eye there are a
[29:39]lot of theories honestly we don't know assuming there is something called
[29:44]the evil eye we don't know how it works some people tell
[29:47]you your eyes radiate some sort of dark energy i saw this
[29:52]article by the scientist and he tried to prove that he said
[29:57]he brought you know people and he has like an electrode and
[30:01]he said he could detect brain waves brain waves i don't know
[30:07]what brain waves are brain waves that come from the eye and
[30:08]he tried to prove the evil eye through that experiment some people
[30:13]will tell you no nothing physical comes from the eye when you
[30:17]wish evil you empower shape on you invite shape on so it's
[30:23]the jinns and the shaytan who go and inflict that damage they
[30:25]break an item or they make someone sick it's the jinns who
[30:32]actually do that but the jinns need triggers they need fuel to
[30:36]do that what's the fuel [Music] hatred jealousy these sins of the
[30:46]heart they are fuel for the demons and the devils of the
[30:48]shayateen to go and wreak havoc so that's another analysis the third
[30:54]one tells you no it's just the system of allah just like
[30:58]when you shoot a bullet you kill somebody when you see someone
[31:02]with a certain intention you can inflict damage on them so my
[31:07]dear brothers and sisters this was just a brief summary of what
[31:12]we have about the evil eye by the way i'll share with
[31:17]you an anecdote here before we talk about some solutions if you're
[31:20]concerned about the evil eye we'll talk about some solutions the anecdote
[31:25]has it that there was this woman she wanted to inflict damage
[31:30]on a man she hated him for some reason so there was
[31:34]a person in the community he was known for having an evil
[31:39]eye everyone knew that in iraq we call him he has a
[31:45]salty eye you know any place that he looks he causes damage
[31:49]so she went and she paid him she told him i'll rent
[31:53]you for the day here's an amount of money come i'll identify
[31:58]to you my target and i want you to see him and
[32:03]inflict him with the evil eye he said okay i'll make that
[32:04]offer so he comes when he when he comes to meet the
[32:08]woman face to face so she can give him she can give
[32:13]him the money he saw how beautiful her eyes were so he
[32:16]fixed his gay on her on his gaze on her eyes and
[32:20]he inflicted her with the evil eye and she went blind moral
[32:24]of the story as the hadith states don't dig a well for
[32:28]your fellow brother because you're going to fall in it if you
[32:33]emit some negative energy out there it's going to come back to
[32:38]haunt you if you're sending jinnis to people's homes i'm just kidding
[32:42]but if you're doing that to people's homes maybe they'll come and
[32:45]mess with you too so protect yourself from the evil eye by
[32:49]the way one quick tip about jealousy jealousy is a natural human
[32:54]feeling that we feel we struggle from it if i see my
[32:59]brother successful my cousin's successful my classmate somebody in the community who's
[33:02]in my league suddenly is out of my league now and above
[33:08]my league that disturbs us naturally and we have that feeling of
[33:12]jealousy some two quick tips to treat your jealousy jealousy is a
[33:16]disease of the heart the first tip raise your hands and as
[33:20]difficult as it is do duha for that person so ya allah
[33:25]my cousin you gave him the blessings that he has increase your
[33:28]blessings on him can you bring your heart to pray for them
[33:32]it's not easy but if you do allah cures your heart from
[33:37]jealousy number two remind yourself who gave my cousin what he or
[33:45]she has if they have any tawfiq ani narama where did it
[33:49]come from allah subhanahu ta'ala so if i have a problem with
[33:54]my with what my cousin has in terms of blessings in reality
[33:57]i have a problem with who with god that's why the hadith
[34:04]states jealousy is kufur it's an act of disbelief jealousy is an
[34:09]act of disbelief because it indicates you have an issue with god
[34:12]you have a problem with allah jealousy eats your iman devours your
[34:24]faith just as fire devours wood because it indicates you have a
[34:27]problem with allah subhanahu ta'ala if allah chose to give your cousin
[34:33]be happy you say you love god love what he does that's
[34:37]one way to cure the jealousy in our hearts so having said
[34:42]that my dear brothers and sisters what are some solutions let's say
[34:46]you genuinely are concerned about the evil eye because you've heard there's
[34:51]a verse in the quran that could be a basis because maybe
[34:53]you've also heard these hadiths right in the end there are scholars
[34:59]and muslims who've accepted them there it's really possible that it's real
[35:02]so how do i protect myself today when you go to an
[35:09]average family who believes in this evil i think how do you
[35:12]think they protect themselves what's the common symbol that everybody uses the
[35:18]i the amulet they call it yes brother i couldn't hear you
[35:30]they don't talk about anything that good that happens to them they're
[35:36]always talking about negative things right [Laughter] but you've seen the symbol
[35:42]right right now for those of you who have the iphone right
[35:45]just type in amulet you'll see that symbol you know what i'm
[35:51]talking about that blue eyed thing right they even have an emoji
[35:56]for it subhanallah so a lot of people think that if you
[35:59]have that symbol you hang it in the house some people might
[36:05]have a tile on the floor that represents that eye symbol the
[36:11]amulet chains keys you name it there's all business behind it some
[36:15]people seek that as protection is there any basis for that in
[36:21]the religion of islam no my dear brothers and sisters there is
[36:23]absolutely no basis for it in fact there's a hadith about the
[36:29]prophet salallahu alaihi when he was four years old you know halima
[36:34]sadia she took him to the village of bani saad in order
[36:37]to raise him in a good healthy environment away from plagues and
[36:40]disease one narration basically states that halema sadia brought something to the
[36:51]prophet that basically looks like an amulet the prophet four years old
[36:57]four-year-old boy he told her what is that why are you why
[36:58]do you want me to wear this she told him to protect
[37:03]you from the eye from jealousy from whatever it is from evil
[37:08]the prophet refused to wear it the prophet says allah is my
[37:14]protector he was four years old and he said that god is
[37:16]my protector what do you mean wear this allah is my protector
[37:19]he will protect me so my dear brothers and sisters if you're
[37:24]seeking protection from the evil eye you have to see what the
[37:29]bait have said because they know how it works you have to
[37:31]say what is the protection that allah has given us i can't
[37:35]just make up my own protection so if you really believe these
[37:41]amulets and these things they protect you from harm some scholars even
[37:45]consider that minor shirk because you are claiming that this symbol has
[37:53]its own independent power to protect you allah is the protector allah
[37:56]is the ultimate one who protects us we seek refuge in him
[38:02]too often we forget this point my dear brothers and sisters many
[38:06]times when we're stuck we think of means and this person and
[38:11]this method and that method the last thing on my mind is
[38:16]the one who's managing the universe he's the last on my mind
[38:22]and then when i'm stuck nothing works and then i say allah
[38:24]say you teach me some dua something with allah why do you
[38:29]keep allah as the last resort keep him the first place that
[38:32]you go to when you are in difficulty then you really show
[38:37]your iman your faith to allah one hadith states there are some
[38:45]people sometimes they're in their salah they're praying their prayer and they
[38:49]rush to finish it why why are they rushing they're rushing because
[38:56]they want to get something done they have work to get done
[39:00]they have a problem they need to solve so they rush their
[39:06]prayers the hadith states allah says to the angels i'm just paraphrasing
[39:11]the hadith for you basically allah says look at my servant where
[39:16]is he running he's expediting his salah he's cutting his salah to
[39:23]get that thing done does he not know that i am the
[39:28]one who decides whether it gets done or not i am the
[39:31]lord of the universe where is he going he's leaving me going
[39:35]to what does he not know i decide everything subhan allah keep
[39:39]that in mind next time you're rushing in your prayer you want
[39:43]help go to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala so this whole culture of
[39:50]that i and the blue thing i don't even know why it's
[39:54]blue what's the basis of it some say there's a jinni called
[39:57]the shaytan god knows there's no basis for that my dear brothers
[40:01]and sisters that's myth that's a legend there's no hadith there's nothing
[40:06]from the debate about this people came up with this i as
[40:11]a muslim who believes in allah i need to avoid that okay
[40:14]maybe sometimes you get those things for fun whatever that's fine but
[40:17]if you believe that this actually has an impact in protecting you
[40:21]that's minor shirk go to allah see the method that allah has
[40:27]given you in order to protect you so there is no basis
[40:30]for the amulets do you have any thoughts any personal experiences with
[40:35]the amulet um um we're surrounded by types of energy [Music] so
[41:42]the basis then maybe for the evil eye is just the exchange
[41:47]of energy and in this case it's negative matter and there's energy
[42:03]sorts of stuff that we can talk about but essentially it's manipulating
[42:06]these natural energies around us and some people have the ability to
[42:10]potentially manipulate energies more than others again it's almost thank you thank
[42:20]you for that perspective yes you know there is a lot of
[42:24]discussion on the types of energy around us what kind of energy
[42:29]we emit we exchange with one another and as the sister said
[42:31]there are types of energies being bombarded at us science is discovering
[42:37]some of them more and more so sometimes maybe these religious concepts
[42:41]have to do with you know energy that we still have not
[42:46]figured out doing my dear brothers and sisters is allows you to
[42:52]exchange energy positively see the organs and body parts that you use
[42:57]most during the day to interact with your surrounding is what your
[43:03]face your hands your feet right when you're at work when you're
[43:10]playing when you're doing anything you're basically using these body parts your
[43:15]face you see people you always face them your hands you're always
[43:20]using your hands to do work one analysis of the wuvu is
[43:25]that the wudu brings you positive energy because when you deal with
[43:30]a lot of people you accumulate negative energy in these body parts
[43:34]so at the time of you wash away all of that negative
[43:38]energy gives you a kalmic soothing effect it adjusts your spirituality from
[43:45]an energy perspective so there are these theories out there definitely and
[43:48]this could be one explanation for the evil eye so now let's
[43:54]talk about protection what do we do is there anything that we
[44:01]have in our islamic literature to protect us from the evil eye
[44:04]before i recite some duas and hadiths for you one common suggestion
[44:10]that scholars give is the following don't share too much about your
[44:17]life with other people my dear brothers and sisters not everyone out
[44:22]there wishes you well even those who smile in your face unfortunately
[44:26]we have a disease called hypocrisy some people may not wish you
[44:34]well you don't need to go and tell the world all the
[44:36]details of your life and what's happening in your homes these days
[44:40]social media is a disaster people are telling you what's going on
[44:44]in their kitchen and living room and bedroom and basement and their
[44:50]vacations and everything that they do you don't need to show that
[44:54]to people why how is that beneficial it's even a trend these
[45:00]days when you know a couple gets married they're engaged they will
[45:04]you know flood the internet with three thousand pictures of them holding
[45:08]hands with each other kissing each other come on you don't need
[45:11]to do that yeah i'm saying we're halal we did the ketu
[45:15]i know but that's not appropriate for you to show to allah
[45:19]anybody anyone out there you bring negative energy to yourself maybe a
[45:24]person can't get married they have an emotional gap and they see
[45:29]that this inflicts hasla in their heart you know they have a
[45:32]yearning for that you know i don't have this in my life
[45:36]and then they could inflict you with some negative energy this is
[45:40]a problem that we have special moments with your family with your
[45:44]loved one keep it for yourself share it with your closest friends
[45:50]to motivate them to show them what kind of a family to
[45:52]have don't go and display everything out there so you don't need
[45:57]to reveal much about your life and therefore we have a famous
[46:03]statement write it with gold it states ho stor the habakkuk in
[46:10]arabic it sounds beautiful conceal your zab what's your the gold what
[46:18]does that mean conceal your gold your money and wealth you don't
[46:25]need to you know go and display all of your weight wealth
[46:28]ostentatiously you don't need to do that be sensitive there are people
[46:34]in the community they don't have what you have no some people
[46:38]enjoy it arrogantly let me show let me show off my wealth
[46:43]out there oh sturdy people don't need to know that the second
[46:48]one the habek what's the hub where you go you're going on
[46:55]a five-star vacation with your family the whole world doesn't need to
[47:02]know it's not necessary to tell them why the habit what's the
[47:07]third one what's madhab what you believe in your thoughts your school
[47:12]of thought now this has different applications if you live in a
[47:17]hostile environment and there are others who will target you for your
[47:20]faith conceal your faith and conceal your opinions you don't need to
[47:25]share what you think about everything with everyone people misunderstand you you
[47:32]don't need to tell the world what you think and how you
[47:36]feel about everything people will misunderstand you people will misjudge you and
[47:41]you're just creating negative energy everywhere so that's one general recommendation that
[47:47]scholars give now this doesn't mean you become obsessive there are some
[47:52]people who take the spirit of the statement with the habakkuk and
[47:56]they develop massive ocd from it they start lying about every activity
[48:04]they don't want to connect with anyone out there they won't invite
[48:10]anyone over they're going to see my new set of sofas in
[48:13]the house and they're going to rip me apart with their aim
[48:16]some people take it to the extreme be moderate habit there's something
[48:21]called allah who's going to protect you be moderate be humble be
[48:26]moderate and it's okay don't obsess over these issues some people obsess
[48:31]over these issues that's wrong that also indicates either you don't view
[48:36]allah favorably or you're iman and allah is weak to charity that
[48:41]helps you that protects you charity protects us good deeds protect us
[48:45]so don't obsess over it but at the same time be moderate
[48:49]be careful be wise now the the last set of recommendations are
[48:55]some verses and a hadith and that i will share with you
[49:00]if you have concerns about this dark energy the evil eye you
[49:04]name it recite suratul annas every single day the prophet would recite
[49:11]this for imams hasanan hassan to protect them from anything evil these
[49:14]two were these two chapters do wonders my dear brothers and sisters
[49:18]you wake up and you wake up in the morning read them
[49:22]in the afternoon read them you're driving to work read them at
[49:25]night read them that's number one number two write this dua and
[49:36]then fold it and then wear it on your arm in an
[49:39]armband and specifically the hadith says do that for your children for
[49:45]protection because the prophet did this for imam hasan and hussain imam
[49:48]ali alayhi salaam did this for imam hasanan hussain what do you
[49:51]write in it the prophet said this is how ibrahim protected his
[50:16]sons isma'il and this is a hadith from the island bait write
[50:21]this hadith and wear it in a necklace in an armband this
[50:24]gives you protection from allah subhana wa because you are resorting to
[50:30]allah you're saying oh allah through your asma al-husna through your 99
[50:34]beautiful names you give me that protection that increases your iman it
[50:39]makes you remember allah and then write this statement or write their
[50:57]name this person his first name the son of the name of
[51:03]the mother eben fulan so zayd eben right write this and then
[51:10]what do you say because so these are some ways to protect
[51:47]ourselves in case we do have concerns there's a lot more to
[51:52]the discussion my dear brothers and sisters but for the sake of
[51:55]time i have concluded the main points that i wanted to share
[51:58]with you now we have some time for any questions that you
[52:00]have any questions personal experiences anything you'd like to share in the
[52:06]remaining few minutes yes brother in the back can you say that
[52:16]again i can't hear yes yes there's a hadith from the imam
[52:24]in which he states that a person who is so proud of
[52:31]him of himself like he arrogantly thinks he has all these achievements
[52:35]he has this pride this is an indication this is an indication
[52:43]that the efficiency in this brain in this person's intellect no this
[52:49]has nothing to do with the evil eye this is just saying
[52:53]people who are arrogant they feel always you know this negative pride
[52:56]these people don't have a complete intellect because they don't understand how
[53:00]the system works they forget that they're nothing compared to allah and
[53:03]that allah gives you everything yes sister is okay that's a good
[53:31]question culturally it's believed that let's say someone envious comes to your
[53:36]house and a glass breaks and so the family tells you alhamdulillah
[53:39]the shah has been broken the evil has been broken is there
[53:44]any religious basis to that we cannot confirm that there is religious
[53:48]basis for that because we don't have a hadith that would support
[53:52]that view however i will share with you a couple of points
[53:56]here number one if something breaks in your house and somebody came
[54:01]to visit you somebody came over don't accuse them of being the
[54:07]cause that's haram when you accuse someone without evidence that is haram
[54:14]it could even fall under the category of reeb i was at
[54:18]a place like you said some people came over and then something
[54:20]broke or maybe the child their son got hurt he started bleeding
[54:26]so when that family left the hosting family the host they started
[54:32]gossiping oh look at them they're so evil they almost burned down
[54:36]our house and they did that and they did this you don't
[54:41]know that bad things happen habibi it's life we go through trials
[54:45]not everything bad happens when someone's visiting you means they inflicted you
[54:49]with an eye you don't know that it's possible but you don't
[54:52]know that so we cannot accuse them and say that the evil
[54:57]has been broken i don't know if there was an evil to
[55:00]begin with yes what's good to do in that case take out
[55:06]some money give it to the poor and say ya allah if
[55:09]there was anything evil protect us from that evil inshallah it's gone
[55:13]with the breaking of that glass this would be a healthy way
[55:19]to interact with it but to accuse other people and you know
[55:25]say yeah it's this person i got struck by his evil eye
[55:28]because when you start accusing people you develop animosity and mistrust seen
[55:34]that i've seen people be on bad terms because of this point
[55:38]where someone said i'll never go to your house anymore because you
[55:43]think i bring you know whatever bad luck to you or i
[55:45]bring the evil eye i'm not i'm not going to visit you
[55:49]anymore this ruins our brotherhood in society in fact the hadith from
[55:53]the imam al-salam states when a guest comes to your house they
[55:58]bring with them their hasanat to you and they leave with your
[56:03]sins that's the barakah that guests you know bring to your house
[56:06]but some people they get paranoid they don't want to invite anyone
[56:08]over anymore that's wrong so it is possible that the evil was
[56:12]broken in that manner but we can't accuse anyone we don't know
[56:17]for sure in those cases if you're concerned just give some sadaqa
[56:21]yes sister yeah people who write they called the rupias is there
[56:34]any basis for that my dear brothers and sisters you have to
[56:38]go to trustworth these sources who will write this for you based
[56:44]on bait only valid sources from the athlete but if you don't
[56:50]know what the sources of this person is i would not trust
[56:54]them some people who write those things they may be connected to
[56:56]the jinn i don't know possibly don't trust anyone especially some of
[57:02]you some of them i've seen them i've seen people by the
[57:05]way people sometimes come to the office and they have issues saying
[57:07]i've been under the spell i found this piece of paper and
[57:09]this person wrote that sometimes i'm interested i'm like let me see
[57:14]what's in the paper i see a full page of diagrams and
[57:16]symbols and how maybe from which imam did you get these symbols
[57:21]there's no basis for that i can't verify if this is effective
[57:27]or not so those people who do that make sure that they're
[57:31]trustworthy righteous pious people and make sure they only get their sources
[57:34]from the adhd such as the duas that i shared with you
[57:37]and others but if they're inventing their own symbols or getting them
[57:43]from some creepy book i would not trust that uh yes allah
[58:02]the brother is asking the first question is is it possible to
[58:06]be for you to be afflicted with the evil eye through your
[58:13]picture only so sometimes a person sees you and okay you know
[58:18]it is said that they will inflict you with the eye directly
[58:23]but what if someone sees your picture can they inflict you with
[58:28]the evil eye so if you ask those people or scholars who
[58:31]tell you yes there is a basis for the evil eye they
[58:35]say yes even with the picture it can happen because it creates
[58:39]some sort of negative energy out there in the world that could
[58:42]potentially hurt that person so even the picture but probably they would
[58:48]say it's to a lesser extent but it still would work that
[58:54]way sure what was the second question if a child does a
[59:04]child inherit being afflicted with the evil eye from his parents now
[59:09]you might find this question strange i'll tell you what's behind it
[59:12]there is a belief in some cultures that there are some people
[59:18]who are prone to the evil eye like their eye immunity is
[59:24]very low you get that you know some people they just get
[59:27]sick because they have a very bad immune system so it's believed
[59:32]that some people have terrible immunity towards the eye so if that's
[59:39]the case do their kids inherit that low immunity or no islamically
[59:43]there is no basis for that so i would say that we
[59:48]don't have any evidence that the children would inherit that we don't
[59:51]have any evidence from our hadith from the imams of al-bait that
[59:54]this would be the case yes because you're part of the family
[60:01]and let's say your parents are alive and let's say people are
[60:04]jealous of their position they're successful people they're you know whatever that
[60:08]could impact the kids definitely from that aspect but for them to
[60:12]literally inherit them no we don't have any basis for that yes
[60:18]mother is there is there a difference between the evil and i
[60:26]and jealousy let's define jealousy means that you see someone having an
[60:32]you get bothered by it and you do wish they don't have
[60:39]it you wish they lose it this is called jealousy there's a
[60:44]word that's close to jealousy but it's not negative it's called does
[60:50]anyone know what gipta means yes i see my brother he's successful
[61:06]right he has a nice house i look at that house i
[61:12]like the house but instead of wishing that my brother loses his
[61:15]house i say ya allah give me a house like him is
[61:19]that bad or good no that's good because you're not wishing harm
[61:24]for your brother this is called the gupta whereas jealousy is known
[61:31]you wish that the nema for your brother is gone this is
[61:36]jealousy now the evil eye is related to jealousy sometimes the evil
[61:41]sometimes jealousy can be the source of the evil eye but it's
[61:45]not the same thing they're two different things and as we said
[61:49]sometimes the source for the evil eye can be what amazement and
[61:54]wonder that's why people will tell you even you if you're the
[61:59]mother and you love your baby and your baby's so adorable and
[62:01]cute and you're just having so much fun with your baby say
[62:05]masha allah you could be the one who inflicts your own child
[62:10]with the i that's what they say right masha allah even if
[62:15]you love something so the jealousy is distinct from the evil eye
[62:19]even though jealousy can cause the evil eye so surat says protect
[62:29]us from the jealousy of those people who are jealous now what
[62:33]does this mean this means jealous people will try to bring you
[62:36]down they'll try to hurt you they'll run after you oh allah
[62:44]protect me from them and one hadith that ashaykh mentions in the
[62:48]book also states it is the i so jealousy has many dimensions
[62:54]one of them could be the evil eye yes brother what is
[62:59]the justification for writing wearing it like what's the justification for wearing
[63:07]the dua as for reciting it when you recite the dua it's
[63:12]powerful it generates positive energy it's a good exchange of energy so
[63:16]it could repel negative energy but when you recite a dua it
[63:21]has an effect let's say it lasts for an hour let's say
[63:25]for two hours because you've recited something and the recitation is over
[63:29]when you wear something the dua is always with you so it's
[63:35]like giving you 24 7 protection that's the basis behind writing it
[63:40]so when that negative energy comes towards you the dua is always
[63:46]being warned it repels it but when you recite it yeah if
[63:49]you constantly recite the dua you don't need to wear that but
[63:54]sometimes we forget sometimes we forget to constantly remember allah and recite
[64:00]the dua for protection so when you wear that it protects you
[64:03]at all times that's the benefit of wearing that dua and wearing
[64:07]the hairs of the imams does that answer the but i'll talk
[64:12]to you question about it later i had one more question i've
[64:15]also heard some people talking about wearing uh rings with the turquoise
[64:20]and that it also protects them yeah see when it comes to
[64:24]the rings if we have a hadith from the albeit we'll accept
[64:29]it the best stone to wear is the akeep ring the stone
[64:31]the stone has blessings the hadith states when you raise your hand
[64:35]in dua and supplicate to allah wearing it's more likely that allah
[64:41]will bring his barakah on you uh the turquoise one what do
[64:45]we call it in arabic faeruz fairuza right feiruzej is the actual
[64:52]arabic pronunciation of it but people call it some people even call
[64:57]it it's the blue one that blue one does also bring blessings
[65:03]we have that in our hadith so we accept that now it
[65:06]doesn't mean the ring itself has its independent powers it means when
[65:12]you wear it allah just brings special on you so that's why
[65:15]it's recommended according to a hadith from imam that if you can't
[65:20]have children bring the pharosa the turquoise stone and have this ayah
[65:26]inscribed on it [Music] the narrator says i did that the year
[65:36]did not pass and allah blessed me a child so this has
[65:41]been also proven to be effective so some stones does do bring
[65:43]barakah yes but the only way that we know is because the
[65:46]prophet and the imams told us not that some people experimented and
[65:49]they discovered this and we trust the bait so yes there's a
[65:55]special barakah in some places on earth like mecca and there's a
[65:59]special barakah and some types of stones that allah puts is wisdom
[66:04]more so that uh that the the hadith is telling you this
[66:09]is what you should do and allah is saying okay this person
[66:14]is listening to my instruction so i'm going to grant it for
[66:18]it's not just this person is listening to my instructions that's a
[66:20]part of it but these stones sometimes have the capacity that god
[66:27]gave them to repel negative energy let's just say allah put positive
[66:33]energy in them now now i'll mention something to you i know
[66:37]some of you will find this controversial maybe not everyone accepts this
[66:40]but i'll mention to you what some scholars have said the quran
[66:45]tells us that even inanimate objects have some sort of perception listen
[66:51]to this point everything in the universe does what tasby had glorifies
[67:00]god but you don't know what they're saying that's what the quran
[67:03]says and then the quran says also the mountains stones they have
[67:07]perceptions allah says we have brought down the trust we offered the
[67:19]trust allah says i offered my ammanna on the mountains but the
[67:33]human being through his intellect says yes i'm up to the challenge
[67:36]but the quran says the human being did injustice to this allah
[67:42]gave him now we have hadith that when allah spoke to objects
[67:49]and stones allah offered a few things to them one of them
[67:54]his existence i'm your lord i created you do you recognize me
[67:59]as your creator all stones said yes they have some letter they
[68:04]don't have intellect but they have some level of perception what exactly
[68:09]that means we don't know but they have some sort of you
[68:13]know perception the second question allah asked them do you accept muhammad
[68:18]as my messenger allah [Applause] so some stones said yes and then
[68:28]allah asked the william he offered the william of imam ali do
[68:31]you accept ali as the mawla the wali the first stone that
[68:37]said yes was the i'm sharing with you what's in in our
[68:40]narrations i know you might have mixed feelings about this whole subject
[68:46]it's an entire completely different subject but that's what the hadith says
[68:49]so maybe because it's there's something in the stone that it was
[68:56]more willing to potentially be obedient to allah that brought special barakah
[69:00]in it such that when you wear it it emits positive energy
[69:04]possibly allah yes yes you can go to the restroom if you're
[69:14]wearing one of those hijabs you can go to the restroom that's
[69:21]fine yes when if a person is showering obviously not to ruin
[69:23]it you would take it out but yes going into the bathroom
[69:25]is not haram if you're wearing that that's fine it's not considered
[69:28]desecration to it even if it has quran words yes remember the
[69:36]reason why you've heard that it's problematic to take to the bathroom
[69:39]is because in the past a lot of public baths were not
[69:43]hygienically you know you know the kind of state they were in
[69:48]so maybe taking verses from the quran in that you know not
[69:51]so clean environment could have been seen by society as disrespectful to
[69:56]the quran but today with modern bathrooms that we have in our
[70:01]homes it's no longer that way so that's why scholars today they
[70:03]say no even if you go in the bathroom you don't have
[70:07]to take it off it's not considered disrespectful to the verses of
[70:11]allah my dear brothers and sisters i sincerely thank you for joining
[70:16]us this evening to this uh final episode in our series as
[70:21]we discuss discuss the evil eye may allah bless you and your
[70:28]families and protect you all with his protection don't fear the evil
[70:32]eye in the sense that you feel loss of control you feel
[70:36]like you know people can hurt you left and right you have
[70:38]allah as your protector read joshua or joshua means a shield allah
[70:47]will shield you through your iman through your good deeds through your
[70:52]sadaqa through all of that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will shield you
[70:57]in sha allah wasalaamu alaikum warahmatullahi
