[0:05]ald [Music] [Music] I wanted to begin first and foremost by thanking
[0:41]you for extending this invitation and it's truly an honor and the
[0:46]pleasure to be here amongst you for the following 10 nights for
[0:54]the coming two nights the topic that I wanted to go over
[1:02]inshallah is the topic of why is it that we commemorate the
[1:04]month of muhar why is it that we commemorate the events of
[1:09]carala I remember when I was in the holy city of K
[1:14]one of the unique things about the month of muharam is that
[1:20]you could really feel and you could see the month as it
[1:23]was about to begin I remember usually in the street that we
[1:26]lived in one of the houses would begin maybe a week two
[1:31]weeks before before the holy month had begun and they would begin
[1:34]by putting black banners just like you see on the walls here
[1:38]they would begin by putting those black banners up and soon enough
[1:43]another house they would also put their banners and a third house
[1:46]and a fourth house and a fifth house and before you knew
[1:52]it the entirety of the whole city of K and this is
[1:55]the same for all of the cities that she has lived in
[1:59]it was covered in Black and it was something that really you
[2:02]could see it but you could also feel it in the air
[2:06]as the month was about to begin it was palpable now what
[2:11]was amazing is that I would notice other changes as well and
[2:14]maybe you see these changes even within the communities of Dearborn other
[2:21]larger cities that people who were not as religious you know sometimes
[2:24]I would go from the city of om I would go to
[2:29]for example the city of tan tan is not known to be
[2:30]as religious of a city as GES it just isn't It's a
[2:36]larger city is more Cosmopolitan and the number of religious people is
[2:40]going to be naturally less and I remember normal weeks when I
[2:44]would go and sometimes I would need to get the taxi cab
[2:47]the taxi would be playing for example Haram music and we would
[2:53]go about our way but as soon as the month of muharam
[2:55]was about to begin and as soon as the month would begin
[2:59]those same individuals that were comfortable playing that Haram music in honor
[3:05]of ab abdah they would turn off that music and they would
[3:08]switch MBA and lat and these kinds of things even the hearts
[3:15]of someone who maybe throughout the other 10 months of the year
[3:18]11 months of the year he's not that religious she's not that
[3:22]religious but during that one month they feel ashamed in front of
[3:27]ab abdah Hussein they say that we can't do what we were
[3:30]doing we can't be who we were let us at least change
[3:34]some of these things for this month and it would go even
[3:38]deeper that they've done studies that people that were criminals people that
[3:44]their livelihood was stealing and maybe smuggling and these kinds of things
[3:48]that was how they made their livelihood even these individuals when the
[3:53]month of muharam comes something changes and they feel ashamed that even
[3:59]if we are stealing the other 11 or other 10 months of
[4:03]the year then at least for the month of mam in honor
[4:08]of Imam Hussein I'm going to stop and you could see the
[4:11]statistics crime actually comes down during these holy months now this isn't
[4:18]surprising when we look at in a wellknown Hadith this is decades
[4:30]before is even to happen he turns to his companions and he
[4:37][Music] says he says that verily in the martyrdom of Imam Hussein
[4:49]a fire has been created in the hearts of the Believers that
[4:55]cannot be extinguished and we see even in those that may not
[4:59]be as religious during the ordinary months of the year even for
[5:02]those individuals it creates a heat it creates a fire and this
[5:08]fire pushes them towards Allah now when we look at these commemorations
[5:13]and these gatherings that we're having and that all throughout the world
[5:17]if you look throughout the entirety of the Muslim World they are
[5:19]having these same commemorations one of the things that is very clear
[5:25]in history is that the from the very beginning up until today
[5:30]they have done their best to either divert or to stop these
[5:36]commemorations from happening when they would see people Gathering the Shia of
[5:42]Ali Muhammad were gathering and they were mourning and they were crying
[5:45]and they were weeping and they were beating their chests the would
[5:48]see all of that and it would remind them that if they
[5:54]are remembering the yazid of yesterday it's not too long before they're
[5:58]going to remember the yazid of today the oppressors of today and
[6:02]so thef they would do their best to squelch and to stop
[6:07]all of these commemorations from taking place you know when I was
[6:10]looking throughout the history of theifs if you want to see who
[6:15]had the greatest hatred for the commemoration of Imam Hussein and of
[6:21]course it's a difficult comparison right because when you look at the
[6:25]they all hated the they saw them as competitors but if we
[6:29]were to look and we were trying to who was it that
[6:31]had the greatest amount of hate we might come across the name
[6:36]of this is one of the Abid he actually you know these
[6:44]abids they came to power with the slogan of returning the from
[6:49]the back to the and of course when they took that power
[6:54]they held it on for themselves but one of the things that
[6:59]he saw and one of the things that worried him was the
[7:01]amount of love that the people had for IM Hussein you know
[7:04]one time there was a gathering that has and in that Gathering
[7:12]there's one of loyal Companions of the by the name [Music] ofit
[7:17]he's sitting there in that Gathering I don't know how they had
[7:19]pulled him into that Gathering but he was sitting there and M
[7:25]asks him a question he says oh in your opinion would you
[7:32]say that my two sons are more beloved or the two sons
[7:39]ofin and when he hears this he knows the danger that he's
[7:44]facing he knows that if he gives the wrong answer it's going
[7:48]to be off with his head despite this he looks around and
[7:53]he sees that there's many people there there's an audience there's a
[7:58]gathering he feels ashamed to say anything but the utter truth and
[8:01]he turns towards and he says the servant of he is more
[8:11]valuable in my eyes than both you and your two sons when
[8:16]mut hears this he's enraged and what ends up happening is that
[8:20]he has murdered in a very horrible way now is looking at
[8:27]this situation he sees that even the people that have love for
[8:30]they don't even have fear for him as the and he says
[8:35]what should I do to crush this love that the people have
[8:38]for Imam Hussein what should I do he eventually comes to the
[8:45]conclusion that he has to remove the love that the people have
[8:48]for the Imam from the source and so he says what is
[8:53]the source because he's been trying to remove it in terms of
[8:55]stopping the Gatherings and all of this he says what is the
[9:01]source he realizes that the best way to remove the love of
[9:04]Imam Hussein is to remove the shrine of Imam Hussein and so
[9:09]he begins to look around he says that who is willing to
[9:13]go and demolish The Shrine of the IM and of course during
[9:15]that time period The Shrine of the Imam it was much smaller
[9:18]than today today we have a very large complex during that era
[9:23]it was very small building that they had and amongst all of
[9:27]the Muslims and this is very amazing when I was looking at
[9:31]this he couldn't find any from among the Muslims who were willing
[9:33]to demolish The Shrine of the Imam ultimately he finds a Jewish
[9:40]man who says I don't have any love for Imam Hussein I
[9:42]don't recognize him and he says that I will do this demolishing
[9:45]that you are asking for there's no issue and he goes and
[9:49]he demolishes The Shrine of the IM now you would think that
[9:53]once the Shrine of the Imam is demolished it is removed this
[9:55]is going to do what it's going to stop the people they're
[9:59]not going to have anything where they can come and they can
[10:02]do Zara the opposite happens instead of it having a diminishing effect
[10:06]even more people begin to come to the shrine of Imam Hussein
[10:09]and they begin to do Zara where that Shrine used to stand
[10:13]M looks he says it didn't work what do I do he
[10:17]says that well I have to do something even further he says
[10:22]that people can still see where the building used to stand if
[10:25]I can remove at least the traces of where the building used
[10:30]to stand then that's going to resolve the issue then people they
[10:33]won't have anything that they can go and they can do Zar
[10:35]around and he actually diverts water he tries to erase all of
[10:41]the traces of where that Shrine used to be and despite this
[10:44]fact people continue to come and even more people continue to come
[10:47]to do the Zara of the shrine of Imam Hussein now this
[10:52]reaches the point and this is amazing I was looking at a
[10:57]book by Shah mut it's called The husseini Epic it's in the
[11:00]language I don't know if it's been translated into English in this
[11:04]book he narrates that he had this group of entertainers you know
[11:13]today alhamdulillah when we want entertainment we pay $9.99 or whatever the
[11:17]price is today we get Netflix we have all the entertainment that
[11:21]we want during that time period it wasn't like this you had
[11:25]to have live entertainment and the all of them they had singers
[11:28]they had dancers they had individuals whose job it was to entertain
[11:33]the audience and so this group that mut has there is a
[11:38]leader who is supposed to teach the rest of them how to
[11:43]sing and how to dance and how to entertain Theif the head
[11:46]of this group one day M calls upon her he says that
[11:51]I'm in need of this woman please call her to come they
[11:53]say that this woman has gone on a journey we don't know
[11:59]where she's gone and so M he waits a week goes by
[12:03]two weeks goes by eventually this head singer she returns back to
[12:07]the Palace of the khif he turns to her he says that
[12:12]where have you been you know with the they're always thinking of
[12:18]plots and plans and someone is out to get them and someone
[12:21]is out to get their power and so he turns to this
[12:23]woman he says that where have you been you've been gone for
[12:25]a few weeks I needed you she says that I had gone
[12:30]on the Haj pilgrimage he says but it's not it's not the
[12:36]month of the Hajj he's getting more and more suspicious she says
[12:42]well I had gone on the omra pilgrimage he says but it's
[12:47]not the month of rajab it seems at that time rajab was
[12:50]the customary time where people would go on the omra pilgrimage and
[12:53]so he begins to get really suspicious that you are within my
[12:57]Palace you are in charge of a very sensitive position and then
[13:00]you disappeared for 2 three weeks where were you so mut he's
[13:02]questioning questioning questioning that where have you gone where were you and
[13:06]eventually she confesses that I had gone to do the Zara of
[13:15]Imam Hussein now I want you to keep this in mind that
[13:17]this woman is not a religious woman having this position as a
[13:22]singer and dancer in the Palace of the khif it's not a
[13:26]religious position that someone can have but M despite ruining The Shrine
[13:30]of the IM demolishing the shrine flooding the area doing everything that
[13:34]he can in order to stop people from going on the Z
[13:38]of the IM he finds that even with his own Palace people
[13:42]have been pulled towards the orbit of the Imam and so this
[13:48]shows us that throughout history no matter what thef would do there
[13:52]has always been this pull towards commemorating abdah husin now this leads
[13:59]us to the core of the question of tonight and that is
[14:04]that when we are looking at why we are commemorating the month
[14:06]of M and the events of sometimes you know when an outsider
[14:11]asks us this question we get stuck they ask us that okay
[14:16]well 1400 years ago we recognize the sacrifice of Imam Hussein we
[14:20]recognize what the Imam did and the value of what he did
[14:26]but 1,400 years has passed since that time we understand if for
[14:31]example right after immediately after carala you commemorate if 5 years 10
[14:36]years after carala you commemorate 20 years after carala you commemorate but
[14:39]it's been 1,400 years that have passed and still you are commemorating
[14:47]what happened at that time what is the reason behind this inshallah
[14:50]tonight and on the following nights I wanted to go over a
[14:53]number of reasons of why we commemorate when it comes to the
[15:01]first reason when we are looking at who we are commemorating we
[15:05]are commemorating the loss of AUM now people will say that well
[15:13]we understand the loss of a maum this is a great tragedy
[15:15]but I think as sh sometimes we don't understand what the maum
[15:21]really represents from our perspective when we are looking at the mum
[15:25]when we are looking at this individual who is an infallible what
[15:28]we are really seeing we are seeing an individual that is connected
[15:33]to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and we are seeing an individual that
[15:39]within themselves they have the potential that whatever characteristics whatever Divine attributes
[15:46]Allah subhana wa taala has this maum has the maximal level of
[15:52]that characteristic and attribute which is possible for a human being this
[15:58]is what we have to understand that when you are looking at
[16:01]an Imam if Allah subhah wa ta'ala is generous and he is
[16:08]the most generous then IM Hussein and the they had the maximal
[16:12]level of generosity which is possible for a human being if you
[16:18]have other Divine attributes theum has all of those things now this
[16:21]is all fine and well what does that mean for me and
[16:27]you today when you lose an IM when you lose a mum
[16:30]what you are in reality losing is an individual with so much
[16:35]knowledge and so much ability to give us from those characteristics from
[16:41]what they have and when you lose an individual like that when
[16:46]someone like that is murdered that link is cut forever so when
[16:51]we are looking at the loss of Imam husin we are looking
[16:55]at the loss and of the potential that that IM had in
[17:00]teaching Humanity how to get closer to Allah subhah tala you know
[17:04]there is a really beautiful story from the time of and this
[17:08]story every time that I think about it every time that I
[17:13]recite it it breaks the Heart during the time of am he
[17:16]had a companion by the name of mayam he was one of
[17:22]the very close companions to the IM and maytham he narrates he
[17:26]says that one night we had gathered with Amir in the city
[17:31]of kufa and when we had gathered in the city there was
[17:33]a group of Companions and we were learning from the IM and
[17:37]he was teaching us various things when the night it grew long
[17:40]and many of the companions they went to their houses they went
[17:43]home he says that I was the only one that was left
[17:47]and the IM he says that mayam come let us take a
[17:53]walk into the desert and he begins to walk into the desert
[17:56]until they reach a mosque which was known as the thei mque
[18:01]when they reach the ji M he recites a four ra prayer
[18:07]he begins to pray after the prayer is finished he does Dua
[18:12]after that he puts his head on the dirt and he begins
[18:13]to ask Allah for forgiveness he begins to recite Al a number
[18:20]of times after he's finished he gets up and he continues his
[18:23]journey with mayam by his side into the darkness of the desert
[18:26]just imagine that you are walking with into the desert eventually they
[18:34]reach a point and he stands in front of Mam and he
[18:40]says Oham I'm going to draw this Line in the Sand and
[18:42]when I draw this line you are to stand behind this line
[18:47]I don't want to see you Crossing it you should remain here
[18:49]until I return back to you I he draws the line he
[18:56]then continues on his way into the desert he begins to think
[19:00]thems he has many enemies he has many individuals who want to
[19:05]assassinate him who want to kill him there's all of this danger
[19:10]that surrounds the IM what if something happens to what am I
[19:13]going to say in front of and Allah what would I tell
[19:17]them on the day of judgment that I just let the IM
[19:20]walk into the desert and something happened to him he says I
[19:24]decided to cross the line and go after the Imam even though
[19:26]he had told me to remain here he says I crossed the
[19:32]line I begin to walk into the desert eventually after walking for
[19:35]a distance I came across the shape of the IM the figure
[19:41]of the IM the Imam he had his head stuck into a
[19:45]well and he was saying something into the well into the depths
[19:50]of that well when he felt my presence he turns he says
[19:53]that who is it I said it is I mayam he says
[19:56]oh maytham did I not tell you not to cross that line
[20:00]then the IM turns to he says Oham did you hear any
[20:04]of the words that I was speaking says I didn't hear anything
[20:07]that you said then the Imam he mentions that whenever I feel
[20:14]this tightness in my chest and the Imam he had so much
[20:17]knowledge that he wanted to offer to humanity there was so much
[20:21]that he wanted to teach us he says that whenever I feel
[20:27]this tightness in my chest and I can't bear it anymore you
[20:29]know after the passing of he didn't have anyone that he could
[20:33]speak to he didn't have anyone that he could connect to at
[20:36]this level he says that whenever I feel this tightness in my
[20:39]chest and I want to get this off of my chest I
[20:42]walk into the depths of the desert I find a well I
[20:46]find a hole in the ground and I speak into the well
[20:51]I speak into the Earth I want you to imagine how much
[20:54]knowledge the had to give us and yet they are unable they
[21:02]don't have enough individuals who are at that Rank and at that
[21:05]level that they could actually teach the things that they know and
[21:08]so when we see this loss of AUM when you see the
[21:12]killing of Imam Hussein when you look at even the killing of
[21:15]the rest of the what you are seeing is the loss of
[21:17]an individual that could connect you to Allah and unfortunately you see
[21:22]that others they murder and they assassinate and they remove that individual
[21:25]from the Earthly realm this is reason number one why we move
[21:29]reason number two that we mourn is that is a reminder to
[21:39]every single individual that love of dun can take you to the
[21:43]depths of the Hellfire if you look at the story of carala
[21:46]and you really study it very carefully you see that the story
[21:50]ofala it is intertwined very closely with the story of the love
[21:55]of D in reality these two things cannot be separated when you
[22:00]look at the story ofala and when we look at the individuals
[22:04]that are involved from om to to yazid before that even mua
[22:10]you had all of these individuals that are complicit in creating carala
[22:14]one of the things that you see in each and every one
[22:17]of their lives is that love of dun and I don't want
[22:22]you to make a mistake that often times we would make and
[22:25]I remember when I was younger I would make the same mistake
[22:28]that when I would read about and om and Yaz I would
[22:33]think to myself that these are such evil individuals they have nothing
[22:39]to do with me there is no similarity at any level between
[22:42]who they were and who I am and so we would vilify
[22:47]them and we would hate on them without realizing that there was
[22:50]a point in time when there was no difference between yazid and
[22:54]us there was a point in time when there was no difference
[22:58]between om and us there was a point in time that these
[23:04]individuals we were the same when it came to who we were
[23:08]as human beings but there was a point in time when Omar
[23:14]and yazid and zad maybe they did a small sin a tiny
[23:20]sin maybe they said a little lie for example they committed maybe
[23:25]another small sin without thinking too much about it and then from
[23:30]there the door opens that that sin eventually leads to a bigger
[23:34]sin and an even bigger sin and even larger sin and that
[23:39]continues until that potential is created within them where they can actually
[23:44]kill AUM and they can feel pleasure at it we have to
[23:46]keep in mind that Shayan when he tricks us he will never
[23:51]take us from zero to 100 in a second that's not how
[23:58]shitan Works Shayan will take us so gradually so carefully that many
[24:01]times we will not even realize what has happened until it's already
[24:05]too late you know one of the individuals within the story ofal
[24:10]he's a man by the name of Omar Omar when you look
[24:16]at his story it's literally the story of love of dun love
[24:18]of the worldly life Omar when we look at his history he
[24:24]had a history where he was serving the OMS and the reason
[24:29]why it appears he served the OMS is that he had great
[24:34]love for becoming the governor of a land which was known as
[24:38]Ray Ry today if any of you visit the city of tahran
[24:43]south of tan there is an area which is known as Ry
[24:45]and during that time period it was very rich it was an
[24:48]agricultural piece of land and so it was a very wealthy piece
[24:50]of land that if you could become the governor of that land
[24:54]then you had a lot of worldly status and power and by
[24:58]the way if you could become Governor during that time period you
[25:02]essentially had the power of life and death over all of your
[25:07]subjects if you wanted to jail someone you could jail them no
[25:10]one would question why did you jail if you wanted to kill
[25:13]someone you could even kill them if you wanted to take their
[25:15]wealth you could take their wealth you could do whatever you wanted
[25:19]to to the people om he had great love for becoming the
[25:24]governor of this place called Ray and what's interesting is that he
[25:30]begins to serve the OMS in order that eventually one day they
[25:33]can make him the governor of R and so after many many
[25:36]years of helping the OM and serving the cause of the OMS
[25:40]he calls Omar he says Omar come I want to speak to
[25:46]you om he comes to the court ofad he says you have
[25:52]served the cause of the OM now Faithfully for many many years
[25:55]and it is time for you to have your reward what is
[26:02]the reward he says that here in my hand I have a
[26:05]paper we are going to give you the governor ship of the
[26:07]land of Rey you are finally going to achieve what you have
[26:11]been working your entire life to achieve and so he gives that
[26:17]piece of paper to Omar NAD he gives them 4,000 troops with
[26:19]those 4,000 troops Omar NAD he goes on the outskirts and he's
[26:24]camped and he's Gathering he's preparing in order to make that Journey
[26:27]towards the land of Iran and to go to Ray right before
[26:32]he is able to leave to Ray what happens zad calls him
[26:37]again he says that I need something from you Omar he comes
[26:41]back to the court ofn zad he says what is it I
[26:46]was just about getting ready to leave zad he says that Hussein
[26:48]Ali alongside a band of his followers they are coming towards the
[26:51]city of kufa and they are about to lead a rebellion I
[26:56]need you to take your troops and I need you to go
[26:59]and fight against him and you're going to have to kill him
[27:02]Omar he says look you've already given me the land of Ray
[27:06]let me be on my way give this to someone else I've
[27:10]served your cause for how many decades and years zad he says
[27:15]not a problem you don't have to do what I'm asking you
[27:17]it's a choice but what I want is that if you don't
[27:21]want to do it you simply give me back that piece of
[27:24]paper you're not going to be the governor of the land of
[27:26]R Om he goes he says give me some time I need
[27:30]to think about this he goes he thinks he consults he does
[27:36]everything that he can trying to find a way out of the
[27:37]situation and eventually he comes to the conclusion that if he wants
[27:42]the land of Rey he has no choice but to do what
[27:47]Z has asked him to do now what's amazing is that Omar
[27:54]he himself says he himself says just imagine where love of dun
[27:57]can take an individual he says by Allah I cannot understand two
[28:02]important things about which I am extremely worried and bewildered about there
[28:08]is some situation that Omar is really struggling with he says that
[28:13]should I leave the governorship of Rey or should I commit the
[28:19]crime of killing Hussein and then he says something which it should
[28:23]shock every single individual in this room he says by Allah I
[28:29]know that his killer will be doomed to hell and that nothing
[28:31]will be able to save him but what can I do for
[28:37]the governorship of Ray is the apple of my eye Allah in
[28:41]the very beginning om he wasn't like this yes he had love
[28:47]for D yes that seed was there but he cultivated it as
[28:52]he Grew Older he watered it and that seed of Love of
[28:58]dya it grows and it grows and it grows until it takes
[29:02]over his heart and it takes over his mind until he reaches
[29:05]the point that he knows that if I kill IM Al Hussein
[29:09]I will end in the fire of hell but he says I
[29:14]can't stop myself my brothers and sisters there's no difference intrinsically as
[29:20]human beings between us and these figures that we read about and
[29:24]so when we commemorate and when we shed tears one of the
[29:27]questions that we should be asking asking ourselves is the question that
[29:33]do I have this love of dun in my heart and by
[29:37]the way for each person it can be something different for some
[29:39]it can be money for others it can be social status every
[29:42]single individual they have a slightly different take on what they love
[29:47]but if we have that seed of Love of dya it is
[29:49]possible for us to eventually reach the point where these individuals in
[29:55]the story of carala reached may Allah subhana wa ta'ala protect us
[29:59]and may He guide us and may He allow this month of
[30:01]muharam to be a month of reflection and a month of growth
[30:07]for all of us insh muhamad
