[0:14]foreign [Music] [Music] respected brothers and sisters being that the month of

[1:02]ramadan is the month of the quran i take this as an

[1:07]opportunity to look at some of the verses in the quran some

[1:13]of the surahs in the quran and examine them and the quran

[1:16]is filled with many lessons it's filled with many life lessons it's

[1:21]the message of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to all of us so

[1:27]we have to take advantage we have to listen to this what

[1:30]is god trying to tell us and this is why it's not

[1:35]only wajib upon us to recite the quran but it's wajib upon

[1:41]us to contemplate the meanings of the quran some people do not

[1:51]contemplate the meanings of the quran so this is why tafsir of

[1:54]the quran is very important it helps us understand the message of

[2:01]the quran so the surah that i chose is the surah that

[2:06]i chose is surat shems surah number 91 in the quran and

[2:11]this is one of the meccan surahs the surahs that were revealed

[2:16]in mecca you know you have surahs that were revealed in mecca

[2:19]in the beginning of the revelation and then we have surahs that

[2:23]were revealed in madinah the meccan surahs they focus more on they

[2:28]focus more on ideology getting people to believe in the one and

[2:33]only god while the verses that were revealed the surahs that were

[2:36]revealed in madina they focus on the muslim community because the community

[2:40]has already been created so they talk about the issues that the

[2:43]muslim community deals with now this surah is important especially being the

[2:51]month of ramadan because the month of ramadan is the month of

[2:54]taskia to nafs the month of purification of the soul and this

[3:02]surah it says victorious is the one who is able to cleanse

[3:18]and purify the soul so this is why we have a duty

[3:25]to purify our souls during the month of ramadan allah does not

[3:28]just want from me to fast allah wants me to become a

[3:33]new person after completing the whole month of ramadan this is why

[3:40]this surah surat hashems is recited in the eighth prayer that who

[3:50]is the victorious one the one who purified their soul and who

[3:54]is the one who is a loser the one who spent their

[3:59]whole time wasting and did not do anything that brings them closer

[4:02]to allah this is one aspect another dimension of this surah that

[4:06]brings us closer to the month of ramadan is allah talks about

[4:12]akarnak the one who killed the camel of the people of the

[4:20]mood and rasulullah he tells the muslims the one who killed the

[4:27]she camel of the people of tamud and brought the punishment on

[4:30]the people of the mood the people of prophet saleh he was

[4:37]ash the worst of the early people and then and the worst

[4:47]of the end people the second time meaning the time that we

[4:52]are in and that includes the time of rasulullah and the imams

[4:55]he says the worst of the end people is going to be

[5:00]the one who will kill you oh ali is the one who

[5:05]struck amir al-mu'min on leila while he was praying and that was

[5:09]abdul-rahman rasool allah says [Music] is going to be the one who

[5:17]strikes so this surah the next part of the surah talks about

[5:21]the worst people they rejected the prophet prophet and they killed the

[5:36]camel now let us go into the surah surat hashems begins with

[5:45]11 aksan you know some some of the surahs in the quran

[5:48]they begin with the quran so for example there are there there

[6:04]are several several surahs in the quran that begin with a an

[6:10]oath that begin by a vow why does allah subhanahu ta'ala begin

[6:14]with a vow today if i'm talking to someone why would i

[6:21]do a qasam why would i swear why would i do a

[6:25]vow because i am going to say something that's very important that's

[6:29]why i do a qasam that's why i do a vow this

[6:34]is why we say by the life of my mother by the

[6:38]life of imam ali we always we do this meaning that we

[6:42]do we do an oath allah subhanahu ta'ala to say something important

[6:48]this is one and second to highlight the importance of that which

[6:54]is being spoken about so what in your zeitun so allah and

[7:03]this surah begins with 11 axam 11 11 things that are mentioned

[7:08]that in order to highlight the importance of what's being said and

[7:13]what is the what is what does allah want to say so

[7:18]allah swears by 11 things including god to say that the successful

[7:25]one is the one who purifies the soul and the loser is

[7:27]the one that is not able to purify the soul imagine how

[7:32]important of a message it is that allah does aksam in 11

[7:35]things so what are they the first is washem see so these

[7:44]are two aqsaam by the sun and by the illuminating light of

[7:50]the sun the sun is one of the greatest signs of allah

[7:53]subhana tada allah if you want to know god look at the

[7:58]creation of god look at the cosmos system that will lead you

[8:04]to discover the truth and discover allah subhanahu wa ta'ala so washem

[8:11]see by the sun and the light of the sun my dear

[8:15]brothers and sisters the sun we look at the sun every day

[8:18]and we take it for granted we don't even think about it

[8:22]who created the sun who placed it in a position where it

[8:27]is not too far and it is not too close so it

[8:33]does not keep me cold and it does not keep me too

[8:34]warm the sun is the creation of allah by the light of

[8:42]the sun you know right now we think of the light of

[8:46]the sun oh it's daytime that's why we have the light of

[8:48]the sun the light of the sun and the sun has a

[8:52]very great impact on this whole universe gravity is affected by the

[8:58]sun this is one thing another thing is the wind the wind

[9:54]the sun that allah subhanahu ta'ala has created washington and by the

[10:18]mid in the middle of the month like right now the middle

[10:20]of the month of ramadan you look outside and you see the

[10:29]it resembles the sun because the sun goes down it becomes night

[10:36]but the moon comes up and it lights the sky it becomes

[10:38]a flashlight a huge flashlight in the sky so it follows the

[10:42]sun once the sun goes down then the moon rises this is

[10:46]one second they say that the light of the moon the moon

[10:52]does not have its own light the moon's light is a reflection

[10:56]of the light of the sun so the moon follows the sun

[11:06]because it receives its light from the sun so this is also

[11:11]the moon and the moon is also very important for us right

[12:13]hard to adjust in a time where you don't have any daytime

[12:16]or you don't have any night time one of the blessings of

[12:20]allah upon us we don't thank allah for these blessings we take

[12:22]them for granted one of the blessings of allah upon us is

[12:27]that we have time to wake up and time to sleep if

[12:31]it was always dark then we would be depressed we would be

[12:36]feeling you know miserable you need you need the you need the

[12:40]light of the sun even there's a correlation between depression and vitamin

[12:45]d because you need the light of the sun to give you

[12:47]that energy to go out and imagine if it was always daytime

[12:52]then no one could sleep no one could rest so allah subhanahu

[12:57]ta'ala gives us this balance this is why allah says in another

[13:04]verse we're not nocturnal beings we live we're awake during the day

[13:14]and at night that is the time to sleep that is the

[13:20]time for seclusion that is the time for rest now and the

[13:26]night that covers it meaning the sun you can't see it and

[13:29]the night is a time of rest the night is a time

[13:34]of seclusion a time to be do your own thing during the

[13:39]day you go out you talk to people you associate with people

[13:41]at night that's the time to rest now we move on what's

[13:49]these are two aqsam this is not just one question wasa by

[13:54]the heavens or by the sky and by the one who built

[14:00]the the sky my dear brothers and sisters right now because we

[14:12]have so much light at night time there's so much light and

[14:15]electricity we do not appreciate the night sky imagine if you go

[14:22]somewhere where there's no light whatsoever probably if you've gone camping if

[14:27]you've gone somewhere where there's no electricity at night you look up

[14:33]in the sky and you see millions of stars such a beautiful

[14:36]scene believe me we don't see it because we have so much

[14:39]light around us we don't appreciate we don't get the chance and

[14:45]the opportunity to appreciate the creation of allah if when you're in

[14:49]the desert or if you've gone out camping somewhere where there's no

[14:52]light at all you look at the sky and you see millions

[14:55]of stars such a beautiful scene who created all these stars who

[15:02]put all this together they say there are more stars in the

[15:08]universe than there are grains of sand on earth how much grains

[15:14]of sand do we have on earth there's more stars in the

[15:19]universe in the cosmos system than the sand on earth who created

[15:22]all of this who put all every single star everything the sun

[15:26]is a star as well who is the one who created all

[15:31]of this who's the one who put this all in one order

[15:33]this is allah subhanahu ta'ala so this required building this required structure

[15:41]who put all of this together it by the is who spread

[15:56]it so the earth it's one of the signs of god right

[16:01]now scientists astronomers nasa they go and they send these telescopes and

[16:09]these satellites just to search for life on earth just for to

[16:12]search for life outside of earth right they're looking for somewhere where

[16:15]there's water where people could live where people could live and and

[16:21]and live a comfortable life this is the earth this is the

[16:26]earth allah talks about this earth this earth that we have to

[16:35]take care of some people don't care don't take care of mother

[16:38]nature don't take care of earth this is your home take care

[16:42]of your home don't destroy it and flattened the earth there was

[16:54]a time there was a time that the earth was filled with

[16:56]water can you live on water you can't live on water imagine

[17:00]it was all valleys and mountains can you live on valleys and

[17:05]mountains no you need some type of flatness now michigan is too

[17:11]flat that's boring you need a little bit of mountains a little

[17:14]bit of a little bit of you know valleys but you also

[17:18]need some flatness so allah is talking about one of the greatest

[17:21]signs of god that he made parts of earth flat parts of

[17:26]earth are flat so for you to live for you to drive

[17:29]for you to walk for you to imagine you have to always

[17:33]go uphill you have to always go downhill it's it's difficult lifestyle

[17:36]so this is this is we have to say subhanallah about this

[17:40]this is the creation of allah is also one of the creation

[17:52]of god and the nafs is something that no one has a

[17:56]re no one has a scientific answer no one has an explanation

[17:59]for today you go to a doctor you go to a scientist

[18:04]you go to an expert you tell them tell me about the

[18:05]human body they'll tell you everything about the human body from the

[18:12]beginning of conception all the way until the bod the person dies

[18:15]it begins as a blood clot and then it develops into bones

[18:20]and skin and tissue and then it grows older and then you

[18:25]come into this life and you grow into phases and phases until

[18:27]you die they'll tell you all of that but you tell a

[18:32]doctor you tell a scientist tell me about the soul tell me

[18:36]about the tell me about the nafs what are they going to

[18:41]say no one has an answer because allah subhanahu ta'ala is the

[18:44]one who blew in the soul in the human being that's what

[18:48]makes me alive the difference between someone who's alive and someone who's

[18:53]dead is that the soul is in the body the moment a

[18:57]person dies the soul separates from the body so this is the

[19:02]nafs and they asked rasulallah there's a verse in the quran and

[19:08]surat israel i believe [Music] tell them the soul is by the

[19:23]command by the amr of allah and we have no knowledge about

[19:25]it but when they talk about see there's the realm of help

[19:36]creation allah describes the process of creation allah describes how the human

[19:42]being begins in a blood clot and then it grows and grows

[19:44]and grows allah tells us exactly what happens we don't know anything

[19:52]about the other dimension of the soul of the nafs we have

[21:33]revelation revelation is what the prophets received for example it's a god

[21:37]speaking to someone but it could be in a dream or it

[21:43]could be just a feeling that a person has a this is

[21:47]one meaning where you know right from wrong another meaning is that

[21:54]within the soul of every person there's a clash there's a struggle

[21:58]between within our souls what is that clash this is the clash

[22:05]of good versus bad the clash of obeying god versus obeying desires

[22:09]the clash of doing right versus doing wrong this is an internal

[22:15]struggle that every single one of us has meaning breaking the boundaries

[22:24]of god this is why fajr because the sun it rips in

[22:29]into the night it breaks the night so this is why it's

[22:35]called fajr so meaning the when the soul it breaks the boundaries

[22:45]you have the ability to distinguish between right and wrong and there's

[22:50]a battle going on between you between right and wrong now it's

[22:54]up to you the victorious one is the one who is able

[23:06]to purify their souls that's the victorious one so all of this

[23:17]all of this is just to conclude to this point what is

[23:22]it what's the important message and loser is the one who loses

[23:34]their soul this is why my dear brothers and sisters when we

[23:37]fast when we go to hajj when we follow the rules of

[23:41]religion we are purifying our souls you are the first beneficiary you

[23:48]are the one who will benefit when you purify your soul if

[23:50]you don't purify your soul you are the loser i'm not going

[23:54]to lose if someone else did not purify their soul i'm not

[23:56]going to win if someone did purify themselves everyone you are the

[24:00]one who benefits this is why we have to discipline our souls

[24:09]we have to work on our souls to discipline them today there

[24:15]are people they're very disciplined right now after after some people they

[24:20]say i have to go to the gym i have to go

[24:22]to the gym i have to work out i have to build

[24:24]my body some people they're thinking about their business tomorrow how they're

[24:28]going to make money how they're going to build their their accounts

[24:31]their bank account make it more the most important thing you should

[24:38]be concerned about building is your enoughs because it doesn't matter if

[24:41]i have money and i lost my nufs it doesn't matter if

[24:44]i became the buffest guy and so strong and i have no

[24:50]strong soul i cannot control myself in front of desires right this

[24:56]is why we have to work on purification of the soul now

[24:59]we move on to the next phase the second part of the

[25:05]sura [Applause] allah gives us an example of a civilization a group

[25:13]of people that lived and they had a civilization and they were

[25:19]a powerful civilization everyone feared them everyone loved them everyone wanted to

[25:23]be like them now there's no sign of them now there's just

[25:26]marks of them thamud they were a tribe that lived and their

[25:35]prophet was prophet they lived in the northern part of the arabian

[25:41]peninsula and south of the levant south of damascus and they had

[25:47]houses and they had a civilization close to jordan today have you

[25:50]seen have you heard of the the petra albatra something similar to

[25:56]that they were close to that they lived there and the prophet

[26:02]passed by them there the past by their houses and they were

[26:04]all of course they were wiped out before jesus this is many

[26:08]this is a long time ago but their civilization and their and

[26:11]the place that they lived is all there and this is why

[26:13]the quran gives us examples of civilizations that lived had a civilization

[26:20]he thought he was the king he thought he was god now

[26:23]where's the sign of all you see is the pyramids there are

[26:27]other civilizations that existed they don't exist anymore this is why today

[26:32]right now some governments and some countries they think because they have

[26:37]weapons because they have airplanes because they have military they think that

[26:42]this civilization is never going to fail civilizations came and failed and

[26:46]they thought they were going to last forever and they did not

[26:50]last forever allah could wipe out everything within a day within an

[26:54]hour within a second everything could go away just like what happened

[26:57]to the people of the moon just like what happened to the

[26:59]people of ad just like what happened to the people of lut

[27:04]just like what happened to the people of other prophets so these

[27:08]civilizations they come and they go so allah says in the quran

[27:15]they they had prophet saleh prophet salah was guiding them and telling

[27:21]them to believe in god they tell him they tell him we

[27:25]are not going to believe in god until you show us a

[27:27]miracle he tells them what kind of a miracle do you want

[27:30]they tell him let a camel come out of the come out

[27:35]of the mountain they're they're ridiculing him they're trying to make fun

[27:41]they're telling him make a camel come out of the mountain and

[27:43]then we will believe in your god he tells them you will

[27:49]believe if this happens you will believe so so then he says

[27:54]he asked allah and the mountain splits open and the camel comes

[28:00]out with its baby calf they come out of the mountain but

[28:07]now the camel came out they were they saw a sign from

[28:12]god but that sign doesn't come for free now that you saw

[28:16]a sign now now tell them tell them that they have to

[28:26]divide the water between themselves and the camel one day they drink

[28:31]from the water they had a pond or a place of water

[28:33]and one day the camel goes and drinks and the camel will

[28:36]give them milk the camel as long as the camel is alive

[28:41]they will be alive they will be comfortable first they liked that

[28:45]deal first they started worshiping then they saw that as long as

[28:48]this camel is around they have to worship god and they don't

[28:52]want to worship god so they started getting angry and why do

[28:55]we have to not drink water one day and then the other

[28:59]one they leave it for the camel they all ganged up and

[29:02]they decided to kill the camel this was a sign from god

[29:06]a camel that came out of a mountain they decided to kill

[29:11]the camel so here allah says the worst of them was sent

[29:20]he was commissioned he was sent to go and kill the camel

[29:24]so now here imam ali alayhi islam he has a statement he

[29:31]says he says one person killed the camel but allah subhanahu wa

[29:36]ta'ala punished all of them he tells them this is the camel

[29:49]the miracle that you asked for and the water that it's supposed

[29:55]to drink they rejected him the camel it's not slaughtered like a

[30:07]sheep or a cow because the camel is so big they do

[30:11]akrennaka where it's stabbed in the neck so one person he goes

[30:17]and he and he stabs the camel and the blood starts coming

[30:19]out and the baby the calf it runs back into the mountain

[30:23]it goes it runs away and faked now one person killed the

[30:39]camel but the whole civilization was wiped out why here imam he

[30:44]answers he says one person was the murderer of the camel but

[30:48]they all were wiped out because they were all quiet and silent

[30:53]and they were happy with the wrong that was going on they

[30:56]were okay with it they were okay with the wrong that was

[30:58]going on therefore they all deserved the punishment from allah subhanahu ta'ala

[31:05]this is why my dear brothers and sisters is very important some

[31:12]people they get annoyed if someone is telling them this is halal

[31:16]this is haram you have to do this this way don't do

[31:17]this they say no no let me live my life i'm free

[31:21]don't be the police the haram police of people sometimes my dear

[31:25]brothers and sisters when someone is telling you this is haram not

[31:29]to judge you yes there are some people that are judgmental but

[31:34]sometimes when someone is telling you it's for the their own good

[31:36]imagine if we're sitting here all together we're here and someone is

[31:39]doing something that's going to harm everyone that means we're all responsible

[31:44]we all have a duty to speak out against the injustice but

[31:47]today there's the mentality here in the in this lifestyle especially with

[31:52]many of the younger generation they say oh i'm i could i'm

[31:54]free i could live my life however i want no one tells

[31:57]me what to do yes you're free to an extent but if

[32:01]you start hurting other people if the consequences of your actions are

[32:06]going to impact others then it becomes everyone's responsibility then everyone has

[32:10]to say something against it because if we don't then we will

[32:15]all suffer then we will all pay the price my dear brothers

[32:17]and sisters may allah bless you all tomorrow we will do another

[32:22]in the quran no
