[0:11][Music] alhamd last night we began a discussion on the story of
[0:49]the Shan and we went over the fact that Allah subhanahu wa
[0:56]taala he is he is a being who creates and he loves
[1:00]to create amongst these creations we have of course the Mal the
[1:07]angels and another one of his Creations was the creation of the
[1:12]Jin when we were going over the story of the Jin one
[1:16]of the things that I mentioned is that the Gin just like
[1:19]human beings they have different groups there are believers amongst them and
[1:26]disbelievers they have different tribes and different different ethnicities and different races
[1:32]and they even have different shapes and sizes just like we do
[1:37]amongst those Jin there was an individual by the name of el
[1:43]who was actually from The Devout Believers and as he begins this
[1:51]process of worshiping Allah subhanahu wa taala his worship is accepted and
[1:56]he begins to rise in rank he rises higher and higher and
[2:00]higher until the point that he is now worshiping Allah with the
[2:06]Mal with the angels of God and when he reaches that point
[2:13]a time comes when Allah decides to create another creation and this
[2:18]is the creation of our forefather adam.
[2:21]and when he begins to create Adam Alam he tells these Mal
[2:29]alongside whom is that I am going to be choosing this individual
[2:35]and his progeny as my khalifas on this Earth and this is
[2:42]a very lofty Rank and so when the Mal they hear about
[2:44]this that he is going to choose this funny looking creation that
[2:50]is Created from clay and I think if you compare and contrast
[2:53]what an angel must look like and then you compare it with
[2:59]our creation this strange creature that walks on two feet and he
[3:04]is made from this Earth the Mal they ask that Ya Allah
[3:06]why would you place this type of an individual as your khif
[3:13]it's such a high position we are here we worship you why
[3:15]would there be a need for this and Allah subhana wa ta'ala
[3:19]he tells them that I know what you know not when the
[3:24]creation of Adam has been completed he turns towards the Mal and
[3:28]he says that I am commanding you to do before Adam now
[3:34]the Mal of course they don't have any desire within themselves to
[3:39]disobey God they're not like us as human beings or the Jin
[3:44]but El who had reached that high rank he makes the decision
[3:47]that I am not going to do sujud before this creation of
[3:52]God because I am Superior to him and he explains his rationale
[3:56]that I am Superior because I am made from the material of
[4:02]fire and he is made of the base material of clay now
[4:06]when we reach this point about the creation of Adam and this
[4:13]is the topic for tonight we get into this issue of evolution
[4:18]that when we look at the verses of the Holy Quran when
[4:23]we look at the it seems as if the creation of Adam
[4:30]it was instant aneous in nature meaning that Allah subhanahu wa taala
[4:34]he said be and the creation of Adam was but in the
[4:40]modern day era we're faced with a theory known as Evolution which
[4:44]teaches that everything that exists on the face of this Earth it
[4:49]has a common point of origin everything that exists from the trees
[4:54]from the fish from the human being if you go back in
[4:59]time it came through this grad ual process of evolution where one
[5:02]being gives rise to another being and that being gives rise to
[5:07]another being until eventually we as human beings have been created is
[5:12]there an Islamic theory that combines the evidence that we have for
[5:17]evolution with the verses of the Quran as Believers are we supposed
[5:23]to reject the theory of evolution does it go against the verses
[5:27]of the Quran and theith inshallah tonight I wanted to dive deep
[5:32]into this discussion and open up a few of these issues now
[5:37]I remember when I was maybe fifth grade or sixth grade we
[5:39]were doing a module on Evolution and the teacher began to explain
[5:44]that we have this belief in science that in the very beginning
[5:50]when the Earth had just been created you had the Earth that
[5:56]was covered with this warm thick soup of liquid and then he
[6:00]explained he said that eventually after millions and billions of years what
[6:06]ended up taking place is that atoms molecules they happen to connect
[6:13]with each other or contact one another and eventually little cells were
[6:17]created and those cells that were created eventually they gave rise with
[6:22]tiny microorganisms and eventually those microorganisms they evolved into more complex forms
[6:30]of life and eventually those gave rise to sea animals and eventually
[6:35]from the sea those animals began to migrate onto the land and
[6:39]eventually this led to the creation of things like primates and that
[6:46]led to the creation of the human being now I remember when
[6:50]he was mentioning all of this he ended it with an interesting
[6:53]point that I still haven't forgotten he said and this is why
[6:57]God doesn't exist and I'll never forget that even in sixth grade
[7:02]I was trying to connect how does the theory of evolution equal
[7:07]the fact that God doesn't exist now as a public school teacher
[7:11]if this had happened today if I had told my parents probably
[7:15]he would have been fired or something would have happened he was
[7:18]going Beyond his scope and his permission that he had to teach
[7:22]these things but this was the conclusion and over the years I've
[7:28]realized that many people they have the same question that if we
[7:32]believe in evolution is there any issue with our belief in religion
[7:36]with our belief in God now when we go back to the
[7:40]history of the theory of evolution you look at the 1850s in
[7:43]the Western World an individual by the name of Charles Darwin he
[7:46]comes about and he argues that based upon the fossil record that
[7:53]they had began to find he argues that when we look at
[7:56]these fossil records we see that there are Creations which become more
[8:00]and more complex as time goes on and so he comes out
[8:05]with this theory of evolution that from the very beginning all of
[8:09]the things which exist in this world they all have a common
[8:15]point of origin now for the Christian world this was a very
[8:19]difficult Theory to Grapple with because for a group of people that
[8:22]believe in the Bible they believed that God created Adam the human
[8:31]race the directly and so this idea that we came about and
[8:34]part of our ancestry it goes to monkeys and primates it was
[8:39]a very difficult pill for the Christian world to swallow you know
[8:43]just imagine you're sitting at the zoo and you're looking at monkeys
[8:48]and you're wondering is that my forefather is that Grandpa you know
[8:51]sitting there and he's making noises and he's jumping around it's difficult
[8:58]for us as human beings to accept this now eventually it was
[9:00]accepted within the Christian world because the authority of the church one
[9:04]had been weakened but number two they kept finding pieces of evidence
[9:08]after pieces of evidence now eventually this Theory it begins to move
[9:14]into the Muslim world and during that time it wasn't like today
[9:17]where when something comes about it's instantaneously transmitted into the internet and
[9:24]it reaches the entirety of the world it gradually begins to seep
[9:28]into the Muslim world and Muslims just like their Christian counterparts they
[9:32]begin to Grapple with this question that it seems as if this
[9:39]theory of evolution it has a lot of weight behind it and
[9:42]so as Muslims who believe in the Quran we believe in the
[9:45]of how do we deal with this issue now traditionally Muslims when
[9:50]they had read the verses of the Quran 200 years ago 300
[9:53]years ago it seemed as if the verses of the Quran were
[9:58]very clear and I wanted to mention a few of these verses
[10:00]because it speaks about the creation of our forefather Adam the first
[10:06]verse it [Music] mentions Allah subhana wa tala he says to the
[10:18]angels indeed I am going to create human beings from mud now
[10:22]you look at this verse there's no mention of evolution there's no
[10:27]mention of monkeys primates there's no no mention of any primordial soup
[10:32]there's no mention of any of these things it seems as if
[10:37]Allah is directly creating Adam and then we look even further in
[10:41]the Quran there's many verses on this topic the second [Music] verse
[10:56]here this becomes even more powerful Allah subhana wa tala in mentioning
[11:02]the example of Jesus he says the following he says the example
[11:09]of Jesus in the eyes of Allah is indeed like the example
[11:17]of Adam he created him from dust and then he said to
[11:20]him be and he was so Muslims they are reading these types
[11:26]of verses and it seems very clear that Allah subhana wa tala
[11:29]he's not mentioned mening Evolution he's not mentioning any process in fact
[11:33]he is mentioning an instantaneous process of creation is an instantaneous process
[11:40]and so here we have these theories seeping into the Muslim world
[11:44]at the same time we have the problem of colonialism that we
[11:49]don't have the scientists that we used to have we don't have
[11:52]the institutions that we used to have if you look in the
[11:56]early history of Islam we were on The Cutting Edge of science
[11:58]the European world it was steeped in darkness they didn't have science
[12:02]in fact if you were a scientist they would kill you they
[12:06]would execute you they might even burn you at the stake but
[12:08]the Muslim World they were at the Forefront but at this point
[12:13]the Muslim world is in a weakened State we're struggling colonialism is
[12:17]coming in they're chopping up bits and pieces of our Nations and
[12:21]our countries and so we're grappling with this we're struggling with this
[12:24]what do we do what do we believe and so some Muslims
[12:30]they came about and they said that maybe just like some of
[12:32]the other verses of the Holy Quran they are metaphorical maybe these
[12:37]verses are also metaphorical that when Allah he says be and it
[12:42]is he is initiating the process of creation through the process of
[12:47]evolution maybe that is what is going on here and so Muslims
[12:52]were coming out with these kinds of ideas trying to synthesize all
[12:57]of these different theories that they had from the record along with
[13:01]the verses of the Quran now here sometimes we have this issue
[13:11]where we find other verses that may point to this reality as
[13:14]well one of the verses of the Quran Allah subhana wa tala
[13:18]he says in this verse of the Holy Quran Allah he says
[13:33]that we created you and then we fashioned you so when the
[13:37]Muslims were looking at verses like this they were saying look there's
[13:42]the possibility that we misunderstood there's a possibility that this is a
[13:45]gradual process that evolution is how Allah created mankind now here we're
[13:52]going to insh go along with this let us imagine for a
[13:57]moment that evolution is the correct Theory and by the way it
[14:01]is simply a theory it is not a fact it is not
[14:05]proven beyond a shadow of a doubt it is a theory Al
[14:08]bit we say it is a strong Theory let's go along with
[14:14]this and let us believe that this is the best understanding of
[14:20]these verses as we begin to go into this we look at
[14:23]the fossil record and when you look in the fossil record what
[14:28]we find is that there are groups of creation that preceded our
[14:32]own creation as Homo sapiens and I was looking online I was
[14:35]trying to find these different beings that had been created that they
[14:42]say is the link between us and the initial Creations the first
[14:46]creation there is something by the name of Homo habilis that appears
[14:53]2.4 million years ago and it goes extinct about 1.4 million years
[14:58]ago it's a long time when we really think about how long
[15:04]ago this was it boggles the mind so this was one of
[15:06]the first they say humanik Creations that we find but when you
[15:13]look at this skeleton it doesn't really look like a human being
[15:17]in fact it is closer to a primate than a human being
[15:21]after that we see other ones there's one called homo rudal fenus
[15:24]and I think maybe a British individual named these they all have
[15:28]strange names homo rudal fenis it appears 1.9 million years ago and
[15:35]it goes extinct 1.8 million years ago and then it continues there
[15:38]is being after being after being until we eventually reach the Neanderthals
[15:45]that came into existence 200,000 years ago and they go extinct 40,000
[15:51]years ago and eventually we reach the creation of homo sapiens Homo
[15:58]sapiens they come about 210,000 years ago and they continue until today
[16:04]so here we are assuming that this idea of evolution is correct
[16:09]we're going to take the verses of the Quran metaphorically and we're
[16:13]going to say that when Allah subh he creates him and he
[16:17]breathes into him that rof is the first of the homo sapiens
[16:25]so 200,000 years ago we are saying that if we believe in
[16:31]the theory of evolution everything is okay Adam was created about 200,000
[16:35]years ago when this Homo Sapien comes about he has a larger
[16:38]brain he's anatomically similar to me and you this is Adam now
[16:45]as soon as we buy into this we begin to run into
[16:50]a few different issues issue number one when we look at the
[16:54]story of and the two sons of Adam now the story is
[17:02]in the Quran it's in theith that these two sons ofam at
[17:08]one point Allah he asks them for sacrifice he wants to see
[17:13]which of these two sons is more sincere and so he says
[17:15]that I want you to bring the best of what you have
[17:19]and place it in front of me as a sacrifice Hab he
[17:25]was an individual that was into animal husbandry meaning that he had
[17:31]flock of sheep it is mentioned in the that he was a
[17:35]farmer he would engage in agricultural work and so he brings some
[17:41]very low quality grains that he had that is his sacrifice and
[17:44]he brings the best sheep the best Ram that he had amongst
[17:49]his flock and that is his sacrifice now what ends up taking
[17:54]place is that when we look at the story and we look
[17:56]at the fossil record we find that agriculture did not exist 200,000
[18:04]years ago when does agriculture first appear it first appears about 10,000
[18:10]or 11,000 years ago so we're running into problem number one that
[18:14]if we say that 200,000 years ago it was the firstam The
[18:18]first Homo Sapien then we now have an issue with this that
[18:23]if he's into agriculture then that was only 10,000 years ago problem
[18:26]number two is that when you continue with the story of and
[18:32]eventually he kills he murders his brother habil now what's interesting is
[18:41]that the Quran mentions this that when he murders his brother he
[18:45]doesn't know what to do with the body and the Quran actually
[18:52]mentions that Allah he sends a crow the crow scratches into the
[18:55]Earth and he shows that when a body has been deceased you
[18:58]are supposed to bury it underneath the Earth there's this burial process
[19:03]now what's strange about this is that when you look at the
[19:07]fossil record you look at the historical record you find that burial
[19:10]was something that the homo sapiens they had from the very beginning
[19:14]even before Homo sapiens came about those other beings had existed even
[19:19]they had customs of burial where they would take one another they
[19:24]would bury the bodies they would even have little bits of food
[19:26]that they would place in the grave they would put jewelry in
[19:28]the grave sometimes they would Place horses in the grave how is
[19:33]it that he doesn't know about the burial custom if he's from
[19:41]this long line of other beings then he should have seen burials
[19:44]he should have seen others who passed away and they are then
[19:48]placed underneath the Earth then we run into the third issue and
[19:52]this is an amazing issue when you look at the verses of
[19:58]the Holy Quran about the creation of and the response of the
[20:03]Mal to Allah saying that I'm going to place him as my
[20:05]vice gerant on the face of this Earth the Angels say something
[20:11]that they should not have had knowledge of what do the Mala
[20:19]say Allah he says oh I'm going to be placing Adam as
[20:24]myif on the face of this Earth the Mal there [Music] respond
[20:35]the Mal they say Ya Allah are you really going to be
[20:42]giving this high rank to this creation that sheds blood and causes
[20:46]corruption on the face of this earth now there's a Hadith by
[20:51]IM where the Imam he says the following he says what would
[20:57]have made the Angels know to say will you place there in
[21:00]someone who will cause corruption and shed blood had they not witnessed
[21:08]those who cause corruption and shed blood the Imam is pointing to
[21:11]a reality he says that these Mal that they're asking Allah about
[21:15]this that this being Adam he's a very violent being he's a
[21:19]corrupt being we've seen this before the Imam is pointing to a
[21:26]reality that perhaps there were other beings that resembled now this leads
[21:32]us to a discussion of beings known as the nasnas when we
[21:37]look at Islamic Hadith the imams 1,400 years ago I want you
[21:44]to keep this in mind, 1400 years ago there's no discussion of
[21:50]evolution there's no discussion of fossil record this is not even in
[21:54]the minds of the people they begin to discuss beings that were
[21:58]known as nesnas n literally means humanlike beings and they explained that
[22:08]before the creation ofam there were other beings that were resembling the
[22:14]human being and Allah subhana waala would create one group of them
[22:18]he would give them an opportunity and they would begin to cause
[22:21]corruption and shed blood so they would be destroyed when they were
[22:25]destroyed Allah subhana Wa ta'ala Would create another group they would again
[22:31]cause corruption and they would be destroyed and this continued over and
[22:35]over and over again until the creation of adam.
[22:39]now here the Islamic scholars they've brought all of these things together
[22:44]they've looked at the fossil record they've looked at the verses of
[22:47]the Quran they've looked at the they've looked at the different theories
[22:53]they've said that we can have a conclusive and comprehensive theory of
[22:57]evolution that works for us as Muslims what is that theory they
[23:01]have said that it is possible that Allah subhah wa ta'ala he
[23:05]created these other beings through the process of evolution these other beings
[23:13]that came before even when we look at Homo sapiens it is
[23:16]possible that even they were created through the process of evolution but
[23:21]they said that when we look at the verses of the Holy
[23:24]Quran when we look at the when we look at these pieces
[23:29]of evidence they say that it makes sense that Adam was a
[23:33]unique and a distinct creation of God that Allah subhana wa tala
[23:37]he said be and Adam was created that maybe he resembled in
[23:45]shape those other beings but there was something special about this being
[23:49]of God and that was the rof that Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala had
[23:53]placed within him this potential which allowed Adam to have that role
[23:59]as Theif of Allah on the face of this Earth so this
[24:03]is one way that we could deal with this theory of evolution
[24:06]we could bring all of these different things together we could accept
[24:09]potentially the idea that things were created through Evolution while continuing to
[24:15]hold to this idea of the verses of the Quran and theth
[24:19]now here I just wanted to conclude by mentioning just a few
[24:23]points Point number one we do have to understand that the theory
[24:29]of evolution is just a the you know I give this example
[24:33]that when you are looking at the fossil record what we are
[24:36]seeing is a little bit of evidence that is here and a
[24:38]little bit of evidence that is here and a little bit of
[24:41]evidence that is here and it's like the example of a jigsaw
[24:44]puzzle I don't know if you've ever bought these jigsaw puzzles and
[24:49]then your kids get a hold of the jigsaw puzzle and then
[24:51]you have to say fat too many of the pieces and sometimes
[24:55]you don't know until one day you're putting it all together and
[24:58]you realize that there's a whole bunch of pieces missing from the
[25:00]jigsaw puzzle but this is literally what they are doing it's a
[25:06]500 piece jigsaw puzzle and scientists only have 30 40 50 of
[25:10]those pieces and they're doing the best that they can to put
[25:13]those pieces together to have an image of how we were created
[25:17]as human beings but we have to acknowledge that it is a
[25:22]very incomplete picture the second issue is that there is no problem
[25:26]with not believing in evolution again as we mentioned it's simply a
[25:30]theory a theory that one day they can say that we were
[25:35]incorrect just like many other theories after 50 100 500 thousand years
[25:39]they say that you know what the theory that we had we
[25:42]got it wrong we were incorrect at the same time we also
[25:47]have to say that there is nothing wrong with believing in the
[25:50]theory of evolution even in the fact that Adam maybe he was
[25:52]created through the process of evolution with that said I think that
[25:58]the best way of looking at it is what the have mentioned
[26:01]and others they've gone over this Theory and it's a very comprehensive
[26:05]and it's a very conclusive idea of evolution I wanted to end
[26:11]it with just a Hadith and inshallah we can use this Hadith
[26:15]really to expand our minds IM he mentions a really beautiful point
[26:22]he says perhaps you assume that Allah has only created this one
[26:29]world and assume that he has not created any mankind except for
[26:33]you and we often times feel that way as if we are
[26:38]the only beings the only Creations that Allah has created in this
[26:44]entire universe IM B then continues he says yes by Allah he
[26:48]has created a thousand thousand in the Arabic language this is in
[26:52]reference to the million the term million indeed by Allah he has
[26:59]created a million world worlds and a million Adams for which you
[27:03]are the last of these worlds and the last of these Adams
[27:07]Subhan Allah when you think about the 14400 years ago in a
[27:13]time period when these kinds of ideas were not even being discussed
[27:16]they are showing us that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala he is the
[27:23]greatest Creator and we should never think that we are the only
[27:26]creation of Allah Allah has created and he continues to create and
[27:30]he continues to create but in this month of muharam one of
[27:34]the things that we recognize is that the greatest of Allah's Creations
[27:38]among these great Creations is none other than the creation of the
[27:43]and when we look at this idea of mourning for abdah Hussein
[27:49]we find that our forefather Adam he is in fact one of
[27:54]the first who begins to mourn one of the greatest creations of
[27:58]Allah we have a tradition that it mentions that when Adam had
[28:05]made that mistake and he was expelled from the Garden of Eden
[28:08]he was in a very unhappy State he was very distressed he
[28:13]was very sad he was constantly weeping he was constantly doing Toba
[28:16]he was saying yaah Allah please forgive me I made a mistake
[28:21]I was fooled by the tricks of the Shan I didn't mean
[28:25]to do this and So eventually jbra he descended sends upon Adam
[28:30]and he says oh Adam if you want your Toba to be
[28:35]accepted by Allah subhanahu waala I am going to teach you certain
[28:39]words by the right of those words your Toba is going to
[28:44]be accepted Allah is going to forgive you Adam he turns towards
[28:49]J he says oh my brother J what are those words J
[28:54]he teaches him a certain Dua the Dua is as follows the
[28:56]translation in English it says the following it says that oh the
[29:02]praiseworthy by the right of Muhammad so first he teaches him the
[29:07]name of the holy prophet sallallah alai then he says say the
[29:13]following oh the most high by the right of Ali oh Creator
[29:16]by the right of FAA oh benevolent by the right of Hassan
[29:21]Hussein Adam Alam he begins to recite these words Allah accepts his
[29:27]Toba his repentance is accepted and then Adam he turns towards J
[29:34]he says oh J I have a question to ask you J
[29:37]he says what is it oh Adam he says that I don't
[29:39]know why this is taking place but when I mention these names
[29:45]I felt a sense of Joy the first name the second name
[29:49]the third name the fourth name he says but when I reached
