[0:07][Music] so [Music] the angels munkar and nakir are two angels of
[0:52]god that have been ordained with the responsibility to work in collaboration
[0:59]during the questioning of the grave phase for the recently departed soul
[1:08]their names are actually titles can be roughly translated as the reprehensible
[1:22]the denier and the denied and we find this quality mentioned in
[1:33]the holy quran in the verse where allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala talks about
[1:39]the result of prayer in our lives he says surely prayer would
[1:55]rids one from wickedness and defilement's wrong doing in the furu of
[2:03]deen the extensions of religion the obligations that come after the usual
[2:11]of deen the foundation of religion we have al-aamr to enjoin good
[2:21]and strive to forbid evil wherever you see it which leads to
[2:26]the following question why would two angels of god infallible in their
[2:32]creation carry such a negative title and this is why they are
[2:45]unfortunately wrongly commonly associated with chastisement punishment and bringing more difficulty in
[2:56]what already is a very confusing phase the time when the soul
[3:05]transitions from the body and begins the journey in the afterlife is
[3:10]not an easy phase how come we have these two angels of
[3:18]god seemingly making it more difficult for us the reality is no
[3:24]angel of god has been created with the intention of just purely
[3:33]bringing difficulty and harm in any one's life rather these angels have
[3:40]been ordained with the responsibilities of fulfilling the covenants of allah upon
[3:48]them [Music] appear after the funeral has ended and the procession has
[4:04]left and the squeezing of the grave that moment finishes which is
[4:09]there to act as a purification phase a filtering in order for
[4:17]the soul to easily transition from the physical realm to the spiritual
[4:23]realm known as the realm of spirits where our intentions are manifested
[4:34]the hassanat and the say the good actions and good deeds and
[4:38]the wrong actions and the transgressions the angels on the jinn and
[4:43]the devils are present in that realm that transition period happens after
[4:53]the moment the squeezing of the grave finishes only then do these
[4:58]angels mun karan nikir approach the soul they do not approach the
[5:05]soul in the physical grave a common notion is that the grave
[5:11]a person is put into is that grave that is mentioned in
[5:14]the hadith and the reports and the traditions and the narrations the
[5:19]squeezing of the grave will be exactly that grave no that grave
[5:23]is for the physical body obviously the soul experiences all of these
[5:28]moments and that happens in a spiritual grave that is erected for
[5:36]them that conference between munkar and nikhir has been described with great
[5:48]significance such that the saints of god highlighted it as a moment
[5:54]one should cry over we find in imam ali hussain the great
[6:09]grandson of the holy prophet muhammad peace and blessings be upon him
[6:12]and his family a supplication in it a line of great importance
[6:22]he says [Music] i cry for the questions from munkar and nikir
[6:37]i cry over the questions from munkar and nikhir towards me why
[6:44]would the imam alaihissalam cry over such a moment those questions must
[6:50]be very difficult questions the reality is they from the outset seem
[6:59]like almost basic questions elementary as questions approach the soul after all
[7:13]of these phases have concluded the funeral has finished as mentioned the
[7:19]squeezing of the grave the purifying of that soul has finished then
[7:25]do these angels approach some have stated according to some scholars that
[7:33]they only approach two types of groups the very righteous and the
[7:40]very wrong those who are in the middle of the righteousness spectrum
[7:43]do not receive the questioning of munkar and nikir however the ejema
[7:47]the consensus between scholars that everyone is subject to the questions of
[7:56]they approach and they ask the following one of them is asking
[8:06]questions the other one is recording both the question and the response
[8:12]in a scroll according to narrations the first of these questions is
[8:19]who is your lord the second question is what is your religion
[8:27]the third question is who is your prophet and obviously the expected
[8:36]replies are allah initially these questions seem very basic so why make
[8:52]it seem like a very significant dreadful moment according to traditions and
[8:58]to supplications it's because the responses will not be given from memory
[9:07]any longer if we were to ask ourselves now who is your
[9:12]lord easy without thinking allah god but the responses are made from
[9:19]memory i just remember that it's allah whereas in melakut the realm
[9:23]of the spirits in that spiritual grave the response will be given
[9:32]from conviction from iman you might by memory say god in this
[9:38]life but in the afterlife the response will be based on your
[9:42]genuine belief did you have doubt in allah you just said god
[9:49]because in this life that you were predisposed born into a muslim
[9:52]family but you never really had conviction that will show so the
[10:01]response might be my lord who did i prioritize as the ilah
[10:04]in my life some might say my lord is my wallet my
[10:11]money my wealth my bank account my desires my lust my craving
[10:18]whatever you put on that pedestal that should have only the name
[10:25]god written on it will be the response as the wise imam
[10:34]once said there are those in this life their religion is their
[10:41]wealth do you know their deen their religion is their dinar their
[10:49]money and for them when the angels ask who is your lord
[10:52]their iman in allah will be taken into consideration as a result
[10:59]the answer will be based on what you genuinely believed allah was
[11:04]some might say it was my money my lord was my money
[11:08]what was your religion some might even say capitalism others might say
[11:16]certain movements from the outset we see these responses as basic but
[11:21]no those responses we give them simply out of memory right now
[11:29]the heart will speak on that day and in that moment so
[11:36]whoever you really considered was your god in this life no matter
[11:41]how much you convince yourself it was allah someone or something that
[11:45]was treated as the illah for you in this world will come
[11:49]out of your mouth in that world that is why it is
[11:54]highlighted as a very deep moment of significance such that the questions
[12:00]that from the outset seem very basic will be very difficult to
[12:05]answer that moment is dreaded because what if i lived my life
[12:11]saying yes my deen is islam my prophet was muhammad sallallahu alaihi
[12:16]but my heart actually meant something else in this world i need
[12:21]to purify that and fix that now because if i don't do
[12:26]it here then it'll come out and those true colors will emerge
[12:29]when the angels are asking me they follow this question who is
[12:39]your prophet with what is your book and the expected reply is
[12:50]the holy quran however as mentioned there will be those who live
[12:54]on a guideline and a policy different from the holy quran might
[13:01]have said your entire life my book is the quran the text
[13:04]that i hold true is the holy quran but your actions speak
[13:12]otherwise that moment you will not say the quran you will say
[13:16]something else then the question of where did you face during your
[13:22]moments of worship where is your qiblah and the expected reply is
[13:30]the holy kaaba this is then followed with the following who is
[13:35]your leader after the holy prophet muhammad who is your imam there
[13:40]are those who took other imams than the holy prophet of islam
[13:45]the expected reply number one and always number one they will ask
[13:56]in addition who is in your heart then they request the next
[14:16]set of eleven imams after imam amir al-mu'min after him who al-hassan
[14:25]then who al-hussein and so forth until they conclude and who was
[14:31]the imam of your time and obviously there was only one expected
[14:38]answer this one angel that is asking all of these questions based
[14:46]on how you replied will transform into a personality contingent on the
[14:56]accuracy of the responses the traditions do indicate that because they are
[15:03]called rather described as this is because they initially approach as very
[15:13]reprehensible abrasive denying and so forth in their appearance in their image
[15:22]tradition indicates they they carry this very scary aura and this very
[15:30]putrid stench the likes of which years of travel will not lower
[15:35]from the severity of that smell and its horribleness but upon answering
[15:42]the questions correctly their quality of munkar nikir changes and after answering
[15:53]them all correctly genuinely because you have lived your life genuinely sincerely
[15:59]believing in what you are saying they take about a different quality
[16:06]they take on a different description and the traditions describe them as
[16:09]mubashar and bashir which is a derivative of the word bushra those
[16:20]who come with glad tidings those who carry wonderful news so this
[16:29]is why they are not named munkar and nekhir these two angels
[16:34]of god because a name is fixed but a title is contingent
[16:40]it can change and they change based on the accuracy of the
[16:49]answers that were given today we might easily say yeah i know
[16:51]exactly who my prophet is and i know exactly where my bible
[16:54]is but that was all lip service for some did you genuinely
[17:00]and sincerely accepting that did you have any doubt with one of
[17:03]the imams of ahu bait and we find this reflected during the
[17:08]life of imam his father imam musa multiple deputies that would serve
[17:22]the role of collecting the and the obligatory charity for him the
[17:30]imam alaihissalam seventh imam of ulbate was in prison for a long
[17:36]part of his life and so he needed to dispatch representatives to
[17:44]act as recipients of of zakat and so forth he after being
[17:53]martyred alaihis had those same representatives amongst them a man by the
[18:03]name of ali ibn abi hamza this man ali nabi hamza al-bataini
[18:12]he took all the money and he saw that my leader died
[18:19]in his eyes my boss basically died and i have all of
[18:26]this now the responsibility is to give all of the money and
[18:30]the charity and all of these to the next imam imam but
[18:37]he saw it was too desirable and he kept it for himself
[18:42]and in order to convince the masses that what he was doing
[18:46]wasn't wrong by keeping it all for himself he made an announcement
[18:50]that all people listen there is no more imam after him in
[18:54]fact went into an occultation he is the mehdi and so it
[18:59]makes perfect sense that i don't give any of this money to
[19:04]the next imam claimant because he was the last one so it
[19:10]stays with me and he created the sack known as those who
[19:16]did wakaf no more imams they stopped imam the successor of imam
[19:23]musa the eighth imam abdul base during his lifetime made a very
[19:32]interesting announcement he gathered his companions and he said listen moments ago
[19:38]and this is through the knowledge that allah has inspired him with
[19:43]alibnabi hamza do you remember him he would be in medina between
[19:49]medina and bhagat this was when imam was in harassan he would
[19:57]say alibi had just died and he was asked allah has now
[20:02]inspired me that he was just asked in the conference between munkar
[20:09]and nikir who was your god and he genuinely believed allah so
[20:13]he said allah the prophet he said the holy prophet of islam
[20:16]he said then he was asked about the imams he got to
[20:22]my father and he stopped at him he knew my rights so
[20:28]he wanted to save me imam al-islam is making this clear to
[20:32]his companions he wanted to say me because he knew it was
[20:36]just a trick mama called them did not make up this sect
[20:39]and that he was the mahdi and he's going into arabic he
[20:41]knew that was all just a lie and a fabrication that came
[20:46]from him he wanted no matter how hard he tried to say
[20:48]that the imam after him was imam his tongue wouldn't allow him
[20:52]because the intentions come out not the memory and from that reason
[20:59]he was punished and the angels took about and took on a
[21:07]very vicious character mun karan nikir and they chastised him one of
[21:12]these angels we mentioned previously he records the responses and he records
[21:21]the answers what he does when he records them into the scroll
[21:25]a hadith say after finishing he then rolls up that scroll and
[21:33]prepares it in a necklace and he brings it around the head
[21:39]of the spirit and they open a door for him or her
[21:44]and they tell them begin your journey into the afterlife the journey
[21:50]known as that what many will describe the purgatory phase begin that
[22:02]journey wearing your responses that came out of genuinity and not by
[22:07]memory these two angels of allah they are known as also as
[22:14]mubashyar and shabir but there is one exception traditions indicate there are
[22:24]two groups who will never be questioned by them who have an
[22:30]advantage because it's in one's favor to not receive these two angels
[22:37]as much as we want to receive them in the sense that
[22:39]we were believers in sha allah that carried conviction if you have
[22:43]iman in your theology in your aqueduct then don't dread that day
[22:46]never and what imam zainul abedin alaihissalam was doing when he said
[22:55]i cry for that moment was he was teaching us a lesson
[23:01]he was showing us that hey take this seriously i i will
[23:04]tell you that it is worth crying over but ultimately if you
[23:09]are a genuine believer and a lover and a devotee to muhammad
[23:12]in al muhammad why would you not look forward to meeting other
[23:16]followers of the ahlul bait munkar and nikir are followers of the
[23:20]albeit and they receive another follower of the bait they will go
[23:27]easy so it shouldn't be a bad moment someone would dread but
[23:30]there are two exceptions nonetheless for the martyrs who gave their way
[23:37]to allah subhanahu ta'ala and for those which has been confirmed by
[23:44]accurate and authentic traditions who are buried in the valley of peace
[23:55]a blessing from being buried near amin for the one that is
[24:05]buried in wad islam will not receive the questioning of the grave
[24:08]from either munkar nor nakhir as a blessing from being in proximity
[24:16]from the amir himself why this salaam was bought by imam ali
[24:24]alaihissalam for 40 000 durham about 400 dinar one dinar is gold
[24:35]and the durham is silver equivalent to ten ten pieces silver equivalent
[24:40]to one gold dinar imam amir mining and that land is so
[25:00]blessed that people knew its significance before the imam would be buried
[25:05]in it the first to be buried in slavis in wadi salaam
[25:09]was a man by the name of safi safa this was an
[25:14]individual from yemen a shii a follower of the bait amir moment
[25:18]wasn't the first to be buried in wadi salaam najaf proper it
[25:22]was this man because he was taught by the narrators who have
[25:28]heard from the holy prophet that there will be that blessed land
[25:33]in iraq in najaf that will contain a mu'min in it those
[25:41]who are buried near him will not receive any of the questionings
[25:46]of the questions from munkar nor nikir the questioning of the grave
[25:50]so you have this individual by the name of salafi safa buried
[25:54]in wadi salaam in anticipation that imam ali of nabil would be
[26:00]buried in it eventually and indeed that land is a blessed land
[26:06]for all those who are buried in it some scholars have even
[26:10]mentioned that it is so blessed by default of being near imam
[26:16]ali ibn abdullah the self of the holy prophet that some have
[26:21]issued decrees that if you cannot get to addis salaam upon being
[26:28]taken from your family and wanting to relocate the body to najaf
[26:35]al-ashraf then some have even mentioned classical scholars not recently that it's
[26:39]sufficient to just send a piece of a person like hair or
[26:43]a small bit or whatever just make it to that land due
[26:49]to its abundance of blessings that it carries 70 prophets according to
[26:54]some traditions are buried in that land and adam and at the
[27:01]helm the king where all those who are buried there will definitely
[27:08]receive glad tidings no questions will immediately begin their spiritual journey and
[27:15]the angels will not approach asmunkaran nikir but rather and will help
[27:23]you in the process in that journey of the afterlife [Music] you
