[0:02]muham muhamad so tonight inshallah we will be concluding the course and
[0:11]we will be discussing the only um branch of the faith that
[0:22]we have not discussed from the 10 and that is Jihad now
[0:27]Jihad is one that there's a lot of misconceptions about there's a
[0:31]lot of lack of knowledge about and a lot of people don't
[0:39]know what Jihad is and what Jihad means and what are the
[0:43]rules and conditions of jihad so to begin the Arabic word Jihad
[0:51]it means to do what to do what to suffer okay what
[0:58]else to struggle to strive yes so if you're watching the news
[1:07]or if you see what those who are against Islam when they
[1:12]talk about Jihad the first thing they say is holy war Jihad
[1:17]does not mean holy war Jihad means to struggle so there's different
[1:23]types of struggles and during the life of the prophet he divided
[1:29]the struggles into two the greater Jad and the Lesser Jihad the
[1:34]greater Jihad is one type of jihad and the Lesser Jihad is
[1:41]another type of jihad the greater Jihad is the internal struggle to
[1:45]be Pious and to be a good Muslim so as a Muslim
[1:50]as a Believer don't you don't you struggle every day as a
[1:57]Believer don't you strive every day we strive all the time and
[2:02]this is um just a second this is um someone's asking about
[2:09]the meeting password are you able to join the I didn't get
[2:13]a meeting password just a second there should be no meeting password
[2:26]okay okay so the greater Jihad is the Jihad of the NS
[2:35]and the Lesser Jihad is the Jihad that has to do with
[2:42]fighting and self-defense and there was an incident with the prophet sallam
[2:47]where one day after the Muslims came back from a battle and
[2:54]it was a very exhausting very difficult battle for the Muslims and
[2:59]sahu alaih told the Muslims now you just finished the smaller Jihad
[3:05]you have the greater Jihad ahead of you so this scared many
[3:08]of the Muslims they said what do you we just went we
[3:12]just came back from Battle some people were killed some people were
[3:15]injured that was the greater Jad what what do we have that's
[3:17]ahead of us that's even greater and even more difficult than what
[3:23]we just endured and tells them to struggle with your NPS to
[3:28]struggle with yourself maybe I could I could force other people if
[3:34]I have strength if I'm strong like I am I could come
[3:39]and force other people to do certain things but who's going to
[3:42]control me who's going to control my ego who's going to control
[3:49]my desires that requires Jihad that requires a struggle so said the
[3:55]greatest Jihad is the Jihad against your own evil desires and it
[4:01]is incumbent upon us to strive in the cause of Allah to
[4:05]better our surroundings and ourselves so that we are able to endure
[4:09]in this struggle in this Jihad because every day some people their
[4:15]Jihad is waking up and praying fud prayer some people their Jihad
[4:19]is to be kind to their parents some people their Jihad is
[4:23]to make sure they don't look at Haram some people their Jihad
[4:28]is to not engage in Haram relationships so everyone has a Jihad
[4:32]everyone has a struggle that they endure that they deal with on
[4:38]a daily basis and that is much more difficult and much more
[4:41]severe than Jihad which is fighting and some people they just want
[4:44]to fight in the way of Allah now the Lesser Jihad is
[4:51]the Jihad that has to do with combat that has to do
[4:58]with fighting and of course this is not always allowed there this
[5:03]is not always okay there are some conditions There are rules but
[5:08]this Islam is a practical religion you know today sometimes you hear
[5:14]some people they come and they say Islam is the religion of
[5:18]Peace this is a good statement to say but does Allah subhanahu
[5:24]wa ta'ala want me to be at peace with people who are
[5:25]fighting me am I supposed to be at peace with people who
[5:30]are fighting in me there are some people they're passive meaning let
[5:34]me just keep getting hit and let me stay quiet let me
[5:38]not do anything this is not what Islam tells us to do
[5:42]Islam tells me to not attack not hurt not abuse not assault
[5:45]but if someone is if someone is hurting me if someone is
[5:49]taking my rights I have the right and I have the duty
[5:54]to defend myself and that is Jihad to defend yourself to defend
[5:57]your property to defend your land to defend that which you believe
[6:04]in and here this is This falls in the category of the
[6:07]Lesser Jihad and this is the external or defense and protection of
[6:11]Islam and Muslims and it is obligatory for us to defend our
[6:16]religion when it is in danger but we should never be the
[6:18]aggressors so there were times in Islamic history where had to engage
[6:27]in this type of jihad the Jihad that had to do with
[6:30]combat and fighting the prophet today some people they come and they
[6:36]say spread the religion with the sword and with fighting no the
[6:39]prophet did not do that the prophet for 13 years he lived
[6:41]in Mecca he was persecuted he was assaulted he was harassed he
[6:47]did not do anything then when he migrated to Medina he didn't
[6:50]do anything he was starting his own Community then the people of
[6:56]qur they came all the way and they waged a war against
[6:58]the prophet the Battle of bad and then the Battle of and
[7:03]the Battle of and these battles they were defensive battles or they
[7:07]had their own reason and another very important point is that the
[7:14]religion of Islam does not tell people to spread the religion with
[7:17]the sword so can we go to the next slide there are
[7:23]three verses I want to look at which really help clear out
[7:26]a lot of misconception and if you have any questions regarding these
[7:30]please be um don't be afraid of asking so one verse in
[7:40]Surah 5 verse 32 Allah subhana wa tala says in the Quran
[7:56]whoever who's who's ever k kills a a human being for other
[8:03]than manslaughter or corruption in the earth it shall be as if
[8:06]he had killed all mankind and whoever saves the life of one
[8:12]it is as if he has saved all of mankind so what
[8:15]does this mean this means today there are some people they come
[8:20]and they say I want to do Jihad I want to spread
[8:23]the message of Islam and I go and I kill people is
[8:25]that allowed in Islam it's not allowed there are some groups that
[8:31]claim that they know about Islam for example a few years ago
[8:34]how many of you had heard of Isis a group of people
[8:37]they came and they wanted to declare their own Islamic State and
[8:41]they started just killing people that's not how it works or before
[8:44]that the Taliban and many other terrorist groups that would do that
[8:52]would carry out these acts but this is something that is not
[8:57]right meaning if you kill anyone innocently this person has not done
[9:01]anything or you're causing corruption in the land then it's as if
[9:07]you have killed all of mankind Allah doesn't say if you've killed
[9:11]a Muslim or a m or no a soul and whoever helps
[9:18]preserve a life it's as if they have preserved all of mankind
[9:21]this is one so that means fighting for no reason is not
[9:29]allowed in Islam second Allah subhana tala Allah says in the Quran
[9:38]there is no compulsion in religion that means can you force religion
[9:45]upon someone no so today what's our reply to those who say
[9:51]the prophet he fought Wars and the religion of Islam was spread
[9:55]by the sword does anyone have an answer yes tell them they're
[10:04]wrong yes so how are they wrong they're wrong in that was
[10:10]not fighting to spread the religion was fighting for self-defense was fighting
[10:17]because someone was causing FNA was fighting for other reasons the prophet
[10:22]was not forcing religion upon communities this is why when the prophet
[10:26]migrated to Medina he told the Jews there were groups of Jews
[10:28]that were living in Medina he tells them you practice your religion
[10:31]there are Christians that had made a that had made an agreement
[10:37]to live with the Muslims and the prophet lived at peace with
[10:40]them and the Muslims had to give zakat and the non-muslims give
[10:43]jizya which is a type of zakat and and while the non-muslims
[10:48]from the Jews and the Christians were living under the flag of
[10:52]Islam and under the Islamic government if they are attacked if they
[10:55]are if war is waged on them by anyone else it is
[10:59]the duty of the Muslims to defend them and fight for them
[11:03]so there's no compulsion in religion third verse that I wanted to
[11:13]look at is umah Toba Surah 9 verse 6 Allah says in
[11:15]the Quran today some people come and say okay you Muslim you're
[11:31]good with you're good with um the people of the book Christians
[11:34]and the Jews but if someone's a idol worshipper then you would
[11:39]fight them and you don't respect their life no Allah subhana tala
[11:42]says in this verse and if anyone of the polytheists seeks your
[11:46]protection then Grant him protection so that he may hear the words
[11:49]of Allah then deliver him to his place of safety so a
[11:54]lot of people either they don't understand or they have bad intentions
[11:58]when they talk about Islam and they try to give Islam a
[12:03]bad image when we look at the Quran we see that Islam
[12:05]is not a religion that just tells people to go and fight
[12:12]next slide please okay so if there is fighting if there is
[12:18]war Jihad in the sense of fighting is it just anytime it's
[12:22]allowed no there are conditions the first condition is that Jihad and
[12:29]fighting needs to be with the permission of the Imam or the
[12:37]representative of the Imam that means not just any Muslim could come
[12:41]and say okay these are non-muslims over there they're fighting us they're
[12:45]Waging War against us then I'm going to go and fight them
[12:50]no because sometimes the right thing to do is not fight sometimes
[12:53]the right thing to do is to try to find through diplomacy
[12:56]try to find Solutions allow the leadership to come and find Solutions
[13:00]it's not just up to anyone's right to go and go and
[13:04]say okay they're non-muslims they're fighting us they're taking this then therefore
[13:09]I'm going to go and fight them no this not allowed and
[13:12]there are rules especially when you're living in communities there are some
[13:16]people that are like okay I'm living in a non-muslim country and
[13:20]they're fighting the Muslims all the way in the Middle East that
[13:24]means I could go and fight them no the no scholar allows
[13:27]that and there are rules and there are restrictions when it's allowed
[13:32]and it needs to be with the permission of the IM or
[13:34]the representative of the Im so I'll give you an example of
[13:39]when this happened would there a permission of the IM okay IM
[13:42]Ali the Battle of sa the Battle of jam and the battles
[13:47]of the battle ofan told his people let's go out and fight
[13:51]on the day of IM Hussein told people Jihad is allowed right
[13:56]now but then for example there were other times where the imams
[13:58]did not allow people ble to fight there were people that would
[14:05]come to him and they would tell him look what and then
[14:07]came to power they tell them look what they're doing all the
[14:10]corruption all the fighting we have a 100,000 soldiers that are willing
[14:15]to listen to you sad says no this is not the time
[14:17]and he didn't allow them to that's it he didn't allow them
[14:22]to and Imam sad did not join any of the movements that
[14:26]were raising arms for example one of them was Z Ali Z
[14:33]the the son of IM Z the brother of IM the uncle
[14:35]of IM Z he carried his sword and he fought Bena and
[14:40]he was killed sad he did not he did he did not
[14:44]go and tell Zade not to fight but he told his people
[14:48]if you're following me then no I'm not going to be involved
[14:51]in this and there were other movements there were other movements um
[14:56]that were that were were going and engaging in battle and the
[15:03]IMs of the they did not they did not allow them and
[15:08]they did not join in that movement so and then sometimes you
[15:13]see that this permission is passed on to the representative of the
[15:18]Im so right now for example our the the scholars they are
[15:26]the general representatives of the Im so if issues the fatwa for
[15:33]Jihad then the if you follow that then it would be okay
[15:37]for you to to fight for example um in 1920 in Iraq
[15:45]the United Kingdom the the the British after World War I they
[15:50]conquered Iraq and the scholars the scholars of Naf and the scholars
[15:58]of carala and the scholars of the hza they issued a fatwa
[16:01]against the British that were basically they were um colonizing and they
[16:08]were taking over Iraq so they issued a fatwa of jihad and
[16:11]the Muslims and the Shia they went and they fought them and
[16:15]they kicked out the British out of Iraq in 1920 similarly you
[16:20]see in 2014 2014 to 2016 when Isis they took over Syria
[16:25]and they took over Iraq and they built the they wanted to
[16:30]build that Islamic State and you see the scholars in Iraq for
[16:35]example Satani he issued a fatwa he tells people now it is
[16:42]okay for anyone who wants he didn't make it mandatory on them
[16:44]he said whoever wants whoever is able to carry arms then you
[16:51]are allowed to carry arms and fight D and fight Isis and
[16:53]this is what happened they began the movement where they were able
[16:59]to kick out Isis because of that F so this is with
[17:01]the permission of the IM this is the first condition second Jihad
[17:06]needs to be in selfdefense you're not allowed to go and occupy
[17:10]you're not allowed to go and enforce your religion enforce your beliefs
[17:15]upon people and when we look at we see Al his movements
[17:21]they were all out of self-defense and either self-defense or it brings
[17:29]us to the next uh the third and fourth um reasons but
[17:35]self-defense Allah subhana wa tala says in the Quran fight in the
[17:38]cause of Allah against those who wage war against you but do
[17:40]not exceed do not exceed the limits Allah does not like the
[17:55]transgressors this means if you are if someone is not fighting you
[18:01]someone's at peace with you they're not doing anything you have an
[18:05]agreement with them you're living in the same country as them and
[18:08]they're not at war with you then you have no right to
[18:13]fight them only those who are fighting you only those who are
[18:17]Waging War against you and this means that you're not allowed to
[18:23]go and do anything that is an act of terrorizing others or
[18:28]or Waging War against others especially those who are not fighting you
[18:33]no you're not allowed to now yes sometimes some people they come
[18:35]and they take verses out of the Quran some people they take
[18:42]verses out of the Quran and they try to mislead people using
[18:45]those verses in the Quran when Allah subhana wa tala says in
[18:52]the Quran Allah says in the Quran um and fight them and
[18:57]and kill them wherever you see them some people they like see
[19:00]look look at what your religion says says wherever you see the
[19:03]kufar you go have you have you guys seen that before yes
[19:06]so what what is this talking about this is talking about in
[19:10]the middle of war in the middle of the battle it's not
[19:14]talking about oh I just a stranger and I go and I
[19:18]fight this person no if if their battle has begun then it
[19:21]would be then it would be um allowed but other than that
[19:26]it is not allowed so this is one in self-defense just like
[19:29]the prophet fought in self-defense in the Battle of bad in the
[19:31]Battle of and in several other battles the prophet was defending himself
[19:38]in the battle ofab or the Battle of third reason Islam goes
[19:44]a l Islam says you have the duty to protect your dignity
[19:48]and your honor and your Kama someone is coming and Tak kicking
[19:52]you out of your home someone is fighting you you have the
[19:54]right to defend and it goes a level further it say if
[20:00]someone bothering another another person another weak person they can't defend themselves
[20:06]you are allowed to intervene and you're allowed to defend that other
[20:10]person so in defense of the oppressed and Allah says in the
[20:14]Quran [Music] oh they say our Lord Deliver Us from the land
[20:33]of oppressors appoint for us saviors appoint for us a helper all
[20:41]by your grace so Allah says in the Quran why don't you
[20:43]fight in the way of God and in the way of those
[20:49]who are oppressed so this is also sometimes when um when it
[20:53]makes it a legitimate reason to engage in War of course it
[21:00]would still need the permission of the Imam it would still need
[21:03]the permission of the Imam in all these conditions and the fourth
[21:06]reason is to stop the FNA to stop the conspiracy and the
[21:13]oppression maybe someone is going in destroying the fabric of society you
[21:18]come and you are allowed to stop this person because Allah says
[21:22]in the Quran fight against them if they persecute you until there
[21:27]is fight against them if they persecute you until there is no
[21:41]more persecution and your devotion will be to Allah alone if they
[21:44]stop persecuting you then let there be no hostility except against the
[21:49]aggressors so the verses of the Quran are very clear they're not
[21:55]ones that tell people go and fight and cause suffering and and
[21:59]pain and you're allowed to you're just supposed to defend yourself or
[22:04]defend others or someone who's causing F so who did the prophet
[22:07]engage in battles with first of all today some people they come
[22:10]and they say oh look what B did look what the Ottomans
[22:14]did look what B abas did look what the khalifas did after
[22:19]the prophets we come and we say those khalifas they're not representative
[22:24]of Islam IM Hussein was killed by someone who claimed to be
[22:28]representative of Islam you want to you want to talk about Islam
[22:30]as a religion or you want to talk about Muslims if you
[22:33]want to talk about Muslims not all Muslims are repres represent Islam
[22:37]just like not all Christians represent uh Christian Christianity and not all
[22:44]Jews represent Judaism but if you want to talk about Islam let's
[22:47]look at let's look at IM Ali and let's look at the
[22:51]IMs of the those are the ones who we tell people are
[22:52]representative of Islam this is the sh answer the Sunni answer well
[22:58]those they've accepted others as we say listen that's why in the
[23:01]beginning we said those people they don't represent the prophet you accept
[23:04]you chose them as representative of the Prophet now you have to
[23:08]go and defend their actions we don't defend their actions we say
[23:12]those those actions are not are not the the conquest that took
[23:16]that took place by the Cs after after um Al we don't
[23:22]accept them this is why IM Ali when he came to power
[23:26]IM Ali did not have any Conquest when Omar came to to
[23:29]rule he went and he took over Iraq and Persia they come
[23:33]today they're like oh look how great he was because he spread
[23:35]the Muslim land Amir said no let's focus on the Muslims and
[23:41]he wasn't he wasn't focused on conquest of the Muslim land so
[23:48]There Are Rules of Engagement and we see that the imams of
[23:54]theit and Allah they were the ones who knew what the rules
[23:57]of engagement were and what the laws were and when is it
[24:02]appropriate and when is it not appropriate go to the next slide
[24:04]please I want to mention a Hadith from in which he talks
[24:10]about some of the Rules of Engagement in the battle because this
[24:14]this this is something very important for us to know because right
[24:17]now we live in a time where people they make Islam look
[24:21]like it's a religion of Terror it's a religion of fighting religion
[24:26]of Bloodshed but go and look at the Prophet when you look
[24:31]at and you look at the religion of Islam you will see
[24:34]it is very far from that and then when you go and
[24:37]you look at what others are doing right now for example what's
[24:39]going on in Palestine what's going on with the people with the
[24:45]in Lebanon what's going on in the Middle East you see it's
[24:48]not the Muslims that are burning people alive it's not the Muslims
[24:51]that are causing the suffering and the pain and the atrocities so
[24:59]There Are Rules of Engagement in a he says um when he
[25:04]wanted to send out people to fight so before he sends them
[25:06]out to fight he gives them rules he called them and he
[25:12]bid them um to sit before him he then said to them
[25:16]go out in the name of Allah and by Allah and in
[25:18]the way of Allah and according to the religion of the messenger
[25:23]of Allah meaning that this is what you're do this is why
[25:28]you're doing it you're not doing it because you want wealth or
[25:29]you want oil or you want money or you want gold or
[25:33]you want other things so this is why you're doing it and
[25:36]second do not handcuff or tie up the prisoners of War meaning
[25:42]if someone becomes a prisoner of war you're not even allowed to
[25:45]handcuff this person in a way where you're hurting this person do
[25:49]not mutilate the dead says he says you cannot mutilate not even
[25:59]a dog you can't mutilate the body of a dog okay and
[26:04]do not betray people meaning if someone came and told you I
[26:07]don't want to fight you anymore even if it's in the middle
[26:11]of the battle you have to stop the fighting he had a
[26:17]companion who he came after the battle ended he came and he
[26:20]told while we were fighting suddenly the man he said in the
[26:26]middle of the battle he dropped his sword and said the the
[26:30]man he said but I continued and I killed him so Allah
[26:34]told the man what you did was very wrong why did you
[26:36]go ahead and kill him how do you know what's in his
[26:39]heart do you know what's in his heart so he says um
[26:45]do not mutilate and do not betray do not kill the old
[26:50]man the child or the woman and do not cut down a
[26:52]single tree except when you are forced to do so and if
[27:00]any Muslim if any Muslim be he lofty or lowly gives a
[27:03]man of the polytheist sanctuary then his safety must be secured meaning
[27:10]if another Muslim gave a cfir a polytheist Aman Sanctuary then that
[27:15]is secured so that he hears the words of Allah if he
[27:17]follows you then he is your brother in religion if he refuses
[27:22]then give him his sanctuary and seek the help of Allah regarding
[27:25]him look how be beautiful the religion of Islam is all of
[27:30]these rules it shows how beautiful and merciful the religion of Islam
[27:35]is so these are some of the rules of uh engagement when
[27:41]it comes to when it comes to um when it comes to
[27:48]Jihad in the way of Allah other than that Islam tells people
[27:52]live at peace with others and if you're able to forgive if
[27:58]you're able to live exist with others then this is what you
[28:01]have to do so so here we see that we see that
[28:08]these are the rules of jihad in Islam other than that anyone
[28:12]who comes and they want to do anything else otherwise then that
[28:18]is not allowed and that is unacceptable so now we will take
[28:21]in some questions regarding Jihad before we conclude and then we begin
[28:30]the cahoot in any any questions regarding Jihad I know you have
[28:38]sisters what about jads okay so with this we are concluding the
[28:52]session on um on the 10 and inshallah we all learned and
[29:06]we all um know what the branches of the faith are
