[1:15]enjoying the Willard celebrations so in light of that today's episode is
[1:19]titled Prophet Muhammad and human change and we hope inshallah to explore
[1:26]the principles of change and how these can be applied so to
[1:29]tell us more about this topic I am super excited to be
[1:34]joined by Sheikh Salim bimji from the other side of the pond
[1:36]in Canada there he is having grown up and completed his formal
[1:43]education there Sheikh Salim studied in Islamic seminaries in New York and
[1:47]then in Sheikh has been involved with various Charities including the World
[1:52]Federation has launched two organizations and started a business dedicated to publishing
[1:56]and disseminating Islamic literature alongside all of that because you know that's
[2:02]not all enough Sheikh has translated over 40 books and I'm here
[2:07]trying to get through one book that I'm trying to read um
[2:11]but all this achievement is absolutely stunning incredibly inspiring which I'm sure
[2:17]uh would not have been uh able to happen without the support
[2:22]of uh his beloved wife and family and of course it doesn't
[2:25]stop there Sheikh Salim is currently engaged in researching and writing an
[2:30]eight volume commentary of the Quran entitled the clear guidance so here
[2:34]we have a Sheikh who is a busy bee but that would
[2:39]be a complete understatement and unfortunately Sheikh you couldn't get a nice
[2:42]Sunday lion I know it's 11 A.M at your time but thank
[2:46]you so much for joining us and salaam alaikum thank you for
[2:50]having me this uh well this morning for me and uh for
[2:54]your audience around the world it's great to be with you and
[2:56]uh to try and unpack this topic this today yeah absolutely inshallah
[3:01]looking forward to it and um just going by the number of
[3:03]books you have behind you I imagine there'll be lots and lots
[3:07]of knowledge to spill looking forward to that so to start off
[3:13]Shake um in the Holy Quran Allah describes the main task of
[3:15]the holy prophet as being to bring out those who believe from
[3:18]Darkness to light so how would you describe the scene in Arabia
[3:24]at the Advent of prophethood of the messenger because you know the
[3:29]period of jahiliyah how how was that transition yeah yeah so definitely
[3:32]I mean Allah gives the the messenger of Allah Prophet Muhammad may
[3:35]Allah bless them and his family many roles and responsibilities um you
[3:40]know the Quran as you as you aptly mentioned in in multiple
[3:44]ayats of the Quran Allah describes the prophet's task as being to
[3:48]bring people out of darknesses the plural into the one light you
[3:51]know and when we study uh the pre-islamic Society of Arabia uh
[3:57]you know first of all we recognize that there was at least
[4:00]6 600 years between the time of prophet Isa alaihissalam the last
[4:03]major prophet and the coming of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam
[4:07]obviously there were other prophets in between um but the main uh
[4:13]that main gap of 600 years and obviously Prophet Isa peace be
[4:16]upon him being sent to another community in another region his message
[4:22]and the message of prophet Ibrahim peace be upon him had made
[4:26]it to Mecca obviously because the Kaaba as their you know there
[4:30]was some semblance of Hajj of some aspect of consciousness of Allah
[4:35]but for the most part um the Arab the Arabian Peninsula and
[4:39]the Arabs of that time were steeped in what we refer to
[4:44]as jahiliyah translated as this era of ignorance an era of decadence
[4:47]and it basically you know it consists of just a complete loss
[4:53]of human morality I would say to an extent um you know
[4:57]human morals had kind of Gone by the wayside there was uh
[5:01]it was the society was ripe with social conflict you know slavery
[5:05]was an open practice uh discrimination against not only people of different
[5:10]colors and nationalities but women were treated as second-class Citizens if not
[5:17]worse um and so you know this pre-islamic era that the prophet
[5:20]was sent to transform and then obviously to revolutionize all of humanity
[5:23]it had a lot of a lot of of building to do
[5:27]a lot of reformation to do at a level of humanity at
[5:31]the level of the individuals and then obviously the collective the society
[5:35]and we do see some examples in the Quran Allah gives us
[5:38]some examples you know for example some of the tribes that would
[5:44]bury their daughters alive is one example of the pre-islamic era of
[5:48]jahiliyah the historical books speak about you know when Wars would take
[5:53]place and ravage between let's say multiple tribes uh they would go
[5:57]on for generations and generations to the point where it's kind of
[6:00]funny and it's sad at the same time kind of this tragic
[6:03]irony that you know if they were stopped and asked why are
[6:06]you fighting for the last let's say 100 years they would literally
[6:10]say we don't know why we're fighting but because our forefathers were
[6:14]in a war we're just continuing their tradition right um so in
[6:19]in that kind of that in you know in the shadow of
[6:22]all of this spiritual darkness is Allah refers to them in the
[6:25]Quran um we see that Allah sends a light uh which is
[6:31]our beloved Prophet Muhammad wasallam with the book of light the Quran
[6:35]to revolutionize Humanity at that time and for all time to come
[6:42]really until the end of time absolutely and I feel like what
[6:46]you just said about the period of jahiliyah and there were certain
[6:48]things that were happening you know where women were being classed as
[6:51]you know second-class citizens some things have changed and yet I feel
[6:55]like this topic is very relevant to us today because there are
[6:58]still there's still a long way to go in some ways we
[7:02]are still living in ignorance of what true Islam is um and
[7:05]hence why this is fantastic because we get to learn more about
[7:10]how to change and how that transitions um and so in this
[7:14]episode we will be focusing on human change from an Islamic perspective
[7:16]and how the holy prophet addressed this issue because that changed over
[7:21]time when he came into profit Hill so some people say that
[7:26]a person's nature is an accumulation of many experiences their childhood nature
[7:28]nurture um and as a result this person cannot change because of
[7:34]who they have become so how true would you say this is
[7:39]from an Islamic point of view I think from the Islamic perspective
[7:43]we don't accept that notion that you know human beings cannot change
[7:46]I mean if if that were the if if that is how
[7:50]Allah had created Humanity then it would be redundant for Allah to
[7:53]send prophets right it would have been redundant to to embark on
[7:56]this on you know on on sending 124 000 profits to guide
[8:02]Humanity because God could have simply said well you know what I've
[8:06]created the human being and they are going to be molded by
[8:08]by uh by their nature the surroundings that they live in and
[8:13]their upbringing from their family and their community and the you know
[8:16]the tribe let's say um and because they will never change then
[8:18]I I have no need to send guidance but the fact that
[8:23]I think that Allah tells us in the Quran you know he
[8:26]has a phrase where he says that you know indeed Allah will
[8:28]never change the community of our people until they change what is
[8:32]in with them what is within what within themselves and other such
[8:35]verses of the Quran that Allah shows us that we are not
[8:40]fixed in our ways you know he tells us for example that
[8:43]we have guided the human being to the pathuran now either they
[8:50]are Shakir they're grateful and they follow the path of servitude of
[8:55]God or they become ungrateful and decide to leave God out of
[8:58]the picture out of their lives so these kinds of verses you
[9:03]know those two are in Surah al-insan chapter 76 and other ayat
[9:07]of the Quran show us that as human beings although we are
[9:13]molded by the environment that we live in but there is definitely
[9:17]room for us to change our lives and that we can never
[9:20]use the excuse while I was brought up in a secular society
[9:24]or born in this kind of a family let's say and I
[9:29]can never change my ways to become a human being ah if
[9:31]we could use that excuse we'd get like a free ticket um
[9:40]now go go for it go first yeah yeah as I said
[9:44]you know if if that was the uh if that was the
[9:47]the nature of the system then you know like as you say
[9:51]that we could sin we could live a life of so-called freedom
[9:53]of freedom from God you know Freedom away from God's teachings and
[9:56]we could just tell God in the day of judgment that you
[10:00]know you created us and we had no room to change so
[10:02]but obviously that's not an excuse that anybody could use neither in
[10:06]uh in a court of law in this world nor in the
[10:07]court of Allah on the day of judgment right absolutely and and
[10:12]I guess that makes sense with the whole justice system um which
[10:15]then I guess brings us to the next point where we if
[10:19]human change is possible then we'd have to understand how the nature
[10:23]of a human being works so I think the Holy Quran talks
[10:27]about the human nature from various different angles and I wondered perhaps
[10:31]if you'd be able to shed some light on the human nafs
[10:32]and how that is explained in the Quran sure yeah so you
[10:38]know we recognize us as human beings as being kind of made
[10:41]up of two components right we have our physical body which is
[10:44]we could say the vehicle um and then we have the nafs
[10:49]right the soul which is kind of the the driver like we
[10:50]have our car uh you know we have the car we have
[10:53]the steering wheel but the car doesn't move until we are sitting
[10:56]in the in the seats unless you drive an autonomous vehicle that's
[11:01]a different situation but if we go back to the good old
[11:05]days where you had to sit behind the wheel of your car
[11:07]um our body is obviously the physical uh you know that this
[11:12]physical being that God has created it lives for a certain amount
[11:15]of time on Earth and then obviously it it goes back it
[11:19]goes into the ground and it is obviously it goes through a
[11:23]process but what is more important I would say and as you've
[11:26]alluded to is the soul right the nafs of the human being
[11:29]um the snuff switch is what the scholars refer to as being
[11:33]mojarat it is immaterial it's not something you can weigh on a
[11:36]scale that you can look at that you can use any of
[11:40]the senses to determine what it is Allah talks about the soul
[11:42]and the Quran or the nafs and he uh the verse actually
[11:46]says the the asking the prophet and incidentally it's a verse that
[11:50]starts off yes as is this series so the verse is that
[11:54]they ask you or Prophet about the soul and the response that
[12:00]Allah tells the prophet to give is brilliant he says to the
[12:03]prophet will say to the people that the nafs or the rule
[12:08]rather is an Umar is a command from my Lord is is
[12:12]a creation of my Lord and as human beings we only have
[12:14]a little bit of knowledge of what this soul is so Scholars
[12:18]have looked at other ayat of the Quran to try and understand
[12:23]what is the soul of the human being um you know what
[12:26]is this nuts how does it get us to function in life
[12:30]and you know we have this example where we look at the
[12:32]soul and Allah speaks about three aspects of the Soul some people
[12:37]think that we have three Souls but it's one Soul which has
[12:41]various abilities or faculties right this um you know where we're looking
[12:51]at the soul of let's say one in which is um the
[12:53]aspect of the Soul where it is always commanding us to do
[12:58]wrong we have an aspect of our enough swear when we do
[13:00]wrong it kind of reprimands us we feel inside when we've done
[13:06]something which is not in line with our our moral compass or
[13:09]religious teachings and then we have what you know it's called enough
[13:11]this aspect of the human being which uh is kind of seeking
[13:17]to become at one at peace with Allah have that contentment and
[13:20]pleasure in Allah um so that's one aspect or that's one way
[13:25]how the scholars look at the solo and obviously there are further
[13:30]kind of uh you know divisions and categories of different aspects of
[13:33]the soul from kind of from one from that level yeah so
[13:38]that is really interesting to me because given that I have a
[13:44]background in Psychology you know there are various um theories that talk
[13:47]about the different Natures of human beings and one of the theories
[13:51]actually are very closely linked to this which is just fascinating to
[13:58]me um but just kind of as a slight tangent to that
[14:00]so human beings have the fitra that you mentioned and you know
[14:05]in modern States like we're taught it's this inner moral compass having
[14:08]this fitra does that mean that a person is already good or
[14:14]you know they have this internal motivation to be good how does
[14:18]that work yeah so the fetra um is also talked about in
[14:23]the Quran obviously uh in Chapter 30 if you're not mistaken Surah
[14:26]the room the chapter of the Romans verse 30 uh where Allah
[14:30]says and the verse goes on so Allah speaks about the human
[14:40]being addressing us and saying that uh you know set yourself upright
[14:43]in the position or going towards the direction of Allah and then
[14:51]he calls he refers to this fitra of Allah this propertyal nature
[14:54]right for how some commentators or individuals translated this kind of um
[14:59]ingrained Compass I guess we can say or this built-in Compass so
[15:04]that every human being is given when they come into this world
[15:07]um you know we're given a compass we can say which points
[15:11]us to Allah so some Scholars interpret the fitra of Allah in
[15:14]this verse or the general understanding as being belief in monotheism in
[15:19]tahit of Allah so we believe that we're born with that born
[15:23]you know we can say we were born Believers right and we
[15:27]have Hadith also that back up this claim um so we're born
[15:31]on a path of goodness we're born knowing what is good Allah
[15:35]has inspired the soul you know as we came into this world
[15:40]with goodness but obviously the challenge comes is that you know how
[15:44]to maintain or retain that purity you know that's where this entire
[15:49]challenge of life becomes right is and that's obviously you know I
[15:54]think also the part of our topic today is the change that
[15:56]the prophet was bringing because although we're all programmed we can say
[16:00]or created on a path of goodness but we recognize the fact
[16:06]that um that we begin to diverge away from that path and
[16:09]it's you know it's obviously the environment that we live in it's
[16:12]first and foremost our upbringing by our our parents our family our
[16:16]community the extended family and then society and in today's time obviously
[16:21]social media is is kind of form making or allowing us to
[16:26]form our opinions um so definitely we were born on a path
[16:30]of goodness but we need to obviously work to maintain that Purity
[16:35]through life uh it's not given that we're kind of you know
[16:38]we're not programmed like robots that we're born with it and we
[16:39]continue in life on that path of of the fitra it can
[16:44]be polluted and tainted and become corrupted so then I guess it's
[16:50]a bit like you know like a mirror and then it gets
[16:54]a little Dusty and then we can wipe it off and it
[16:55]is possible to then revert back to the victra um and at
[17:01]this point I'd like to delve into a little bit into the
[17:05]prophet's life and I guess the first question here is that is
[17:07]there a serious need for a role model for that change to
[17:12]happen because do we do we need someone to tell us this
[17:14]needs to happen or is that something we can just do okay
[17:18]we're not merely depend on like theoretical teachings of the religion to
[17:21]learn how to change ourselves what is what value is Prophet Muhammad
[17:25]adding to the the concept of change um I think we'll find
[17:32]as human beings that in any aspect of life in any area
[17:34]of life we we always need to have somebody there to kind
[17:39]of take us by the hand and guide us right um if
[17:41]you think about when we went through school our our schooling whether
[17:44]it's Primary School secondary we go to post-secondary um would it be
[17:50]would it have been enough for the institution of Higher Learning to
[17:53]give us a a you know a stack of books and to
[17:57]just say go home and read them and come back and take
[18:00]the exam right no school from kindergarten or preschool way to you
[18:05]know University would ever do that you know it's uh it's overwhelming
[18:08]it's a very daunting task books are traditionally written uh in in
[18:15]a way that they require a teacher to explain right there's a
[18:18]lot of uh you know a lot of nuances and what's said
[18:21]and what is not said in a book and so just as
[18:24]a teacher in a school or a principal or a professor would
[18:29]be there to teach teach a course and give you the textbook
[18:31]but then he or she would teach the lessons in Islam we
[18:35]we have the similar concept that if Allah wanted to and if
[18:39]it was you know he could have created human beings like this
[18:42]that I'll just give you a book and you'll read it and
[18:45]you'll be on a path but we see especially in the Quran
[18:50]when it comes to the life of rasulullah and his integral role
[18:53]in the life of a believer that without him it is I
[18:59]would say close to Impossible if not humanly impossible to reach to
[19:02]any level right we need we have the book definitely which forms
[19:05]the core of the teachings but also we recognize that without the
[19:08]teacher being the messenger of Allah our beloved Prophet Muhammad may Allah
[19:13]bless them and his family it becomes impossible to actually live the
[19:18]book right so he becomes the teacher of the book and we
[19:20]again we see this even in the Quran if we remember in
[19:25]Social jummah which we recite every Friday uh where Allah describes the
[19:28]prophet he gives he gives him three other responsibilities right he tells
[19:32]us that it is uh that he's been given the book and
[19:38]it's uh his job is we use him to purify the people
[19:41]right to teach the people the book and the wisdom to teach
[19:47]the people how to engage in servitude to Allah how to involve
[19:51]and to go through that change that process of change to become
[19:57]human beings to come out of those the levels of darkness and
[20:00]to move into the light so I would say that definitely without
[20:05]a role model uh in in our case obviously the first and
[20:07]foremost being the prophet of Islam and then at the next level
[20:10]his daughter lady Zahara peace be partner and the 12 imams peace
[20:13]be upon all of them um a Believer can never expect to
[20:18]get to Allah without having these Role Models they put the teachings
[20:22]into into a practical application really for us and I guess that's
[20:27]where the Practical applications of change begins to come in uh into
[20:30]the theoretical side of things um so then I guess the follow-up
[20:35]question for that would be we know that um Allah revealed the
[20:42]Quran to Prophet Muhammad's heart in in one go and then he
[20:44]gradually revealed the Quran over 23 years delivering The Message of Islam
[20:49]and I guess I've always wondered why why was that why had
[20:54]it why was it something that was a gradual process so again
[20:58]I think we you know if we reflect even on on our
[21:02]own lives and and people around us we recognize that change never
[21:06]comes easy you know something as simple as even like a a
[21:09]change in in our eating habits or food right we sometimes don't
[21:14]like a particular food and we get accustomed to it over time
[21:17]um human human being you know our spiritual mental evolution is similar
[21:22]that um had Allah revealed the Quran and given it to humanity
[21:29]at one time rather than over the 23-year period uh and that
[21:32]too in two unique environments you know 13 years and under a
[21:38]polytheistic Society a very you know a very unique set of circumstances
[21:42]and then the next 10 or 11 years in Medina in a
[21:48]Muslim kind of environment I uh ideal Society let's say um have
[21:51]the Quran come down and get been given to us at one
[21:54]time it would have been very hard for those people who were
[21:56]who had lived maybe you know uh decades 30 40 50 years
[22:02]in a particular mindset to change overnight it's like when we go
[22:04]you know let's say somebody has a bad habit of smoking um
[22:09]you know the doctor will you know you know the other health
[22:12]practitioner will tell them you know what you need to quit but
[22:14]to quit cold turkey to quit overnight is very difficult if not
[22:17]impossible and people will go back to their old ways right we
[22:21]uh we have that kind of propensity as human beings that it's
[22:24]hard to change unless we kind of do it gradually over time
[22:28]right people that want to lose weight let's say right there they'll
[22:31]they'll start on a regiment of exercise of eating healthy but it'll
[22:35]take time to get to that ideal stage ideal station so I
[22:40]think because of that because Allah knows the nature of the human
[22:44]being and obviously he created us so he knows what we are
[22:47]capable of um you know for that reason we see that Allah
[22:50]revealed the Quran in in portions and not only revealed the Quran
[22:57]to change the human psyche in terms of you know the culture
[22:59]that they were that they had to evolve from but even nearly
[23:02]the Practical rulings of Islam right we see this we believe that
[23:08]alcohol has always been Haram it's been always prohibited because of the
[23:11]multiple you know reasons but one of them being impact on the
[23:16]human mental mental stability right and you know be able to focus
[23:20]on on the realities of the world but if you look in
[23:24]the Quran for example when the prohibition of alcohol came about or
[23:27]the we could say the uh for the Muslim Community the the
[23:32]kind of the way that Allah brought it forth yeah it was
[23:34]over the course of like 15 years right the first 13 years
[23:39]in Mecca although alcohol was not permitted but it was tolerated but
[23:42]Allah told the Muslims for example that you know don't approach this
[23:50]don't approach prayers while you are inebriated until you're uh you've you
[23:56]know you're you're sober and can understand what you're saying and so
[24:00]it continued like that until they get to Medina and then gradually
[24:04]eventually at that point Allah says and you know what now you've
[24:07]had 15 years to recognize this religion as about the human mind
[24:11]it's about the intellect it's a religion where these sorts of things
[24:16]like like drugs like alcohol are are things that need to be
[24:19]kept away from so now comes the the process of ensuring that
[24:24]the Believers keep away from it completely right or even fasting right
[24:28]the month of Ramadan fasting didn't occur the obligation to fast didn't
[24:33]occur well until Medina because obviously you know you can't expect a
[24:37]community who have been living a life of openness and a life
[24:40]of freedoms let's say to accept Islam on a Monday and then
[24:46]Tuesday begin fasting Ramadan right it doesn't work like that so Allah
[24:50]had to gradually progressively giving give the teachings to the prophet to
[24:54]get him to gradually convey them to the community to allow them
[24:58]that gradual progression uh to that transformation of life right so yeah
[25:05]that's probably the best reason why we have you know a gradual
[25:10]Revelation and uh explanation of the Quran from the messenger of Allah
[25:13]and that it didn't just uh come and he didn't just give
[25:17]it out as one book to the community uh you know on
[25:19]the first day of his message that does make a lot of
[25:24]sense actually but then there's a question that popped into my head
[25:27]as you were speaking there and with Salah for example and please
[25:32]do correct me if you know my my knowledge is incorrect here
[25:34]um but I understand that there were many many more workouts of
[25:40]Salah to be recited um and now we've come to the few
[25:45]rakas that we do today so if change was supposed to be
[25:48]gradual wouldn't we start with of your account and then build up
[25:50]to 100 like today rather than being oh here are so many
[25:54]requests that you need to recite many many years ago and now
[25:55]we're setting the you know a few workouts that we do today
[25:58]and I wondered how that worked um so I think I mean
[26:06]I think I mean the prayers as an example the prayers that
[26:09]we have today um I I don't know if we have at
[26:14]least I haven't seen it where there were hundreds of rakat to
[26:18]pray let's say um I know there are there there is some
[26:19]discussions in in the Mirage of rasulullah where we were told that
[26:25]the prayers were a certain number and that they were kind of
[26:27]reduced to what we have today um I think we'd have to
[26:32]kind of re-reinvestigate that topic maybe um but I think Allah in
[26:36]in all of the aspects of worship he you know it was
[26:38]never meant to be an arduous or a difficult process to engage
[26:44]in worship of Allah right and Allah mentions even in the Quran
[26:47]uh you know there's a beautiful verse um in the 29th Jews
[26:50]where basically Allah says that he knows that you know there are
[26:54]people amongst you who are sick who are busy traveling who are
[26:57]engaged in other actions so he says that read of the Quran
[27:05]that which is easy for you right so even worship was never
[27:08]meant to be a taxing burden um you and if we look
[27:13]at it that yes the some acts of worship were more intense
[27:15]in the beginning and then they were reduced um it may have
[27:20]been a in an attempt again like we look at our own
[27:23]personal lives that you know sometimes we have to push ourselves in
[27:26]the beginning to get to a level where we kind of plateau
[27:28]and then we can kind of ride a wave right so it
[27:32]may have also been that Allah was kind of trying to push
[27:36]the young community of Believers because you know we have to keep
[27:39]in mind that when we read the Quran especially or we look
[27:41]at Islamic history we need to try and put ourselves in the
[27:46]feet of people who lived 1400 years ago right and you know
[27:48]many times even I've seen this personally when when we have people
[27:53]who revert to Islam they were Christians or they were from another
[27:57]tradition they kind of come into the religion uh you know with
[27:59]like 110 with all the energy and steam behind them because they
[28:05]want to kind of enter fully and and try and and you
[28:07]know perform every act of worship let's say and you know to
[28:12]the maximum potential um and then they kind of begin to kind
[28:14]of plateau and it kind of tapers down to you know they
[28:18]recognize where their place is in the religion and their obligation to
[28:21]Allah but it's like that initial burst of energy you need to
[28:25]get going get the engine kind of running and then once it's
[28:28]running then you're kind of able to uh keep it going at
[28:32]a steady pace through the the the regular acts of worship so
[28:34]we could even perhaps look at it in that light I would
[28:39]say if you know I've actually never thought about it that way
[28:41]and that does make sense like that boost of energy to get
[28:43]started that does make so much sense because I did wonder if
[28:48]change is gradual well where did this come from but yeah thank
[28:50]you so much for um shedding some light on that um and
[28:54]then on on the topic of change uh I believe there is
[28:59]um and again uh I may not quote this you know uh
[29:03]word forward but the heart is a changing thing and sometimes I
[29:07]feel like you go through Peaks and troughs of Faith or the
[29:10]motivation that one may has may have towards wanting to change so
[29:14]if someone has made a change and I don't know for example
[29:19]they're reciting Quran more often or they're reciting Salah on time and
[29:23]then they kind of hit rock bottom again and then up again
[29:28]and down again does is that telling something about the state of
[29:32]their fitra or their nafs at all um I mean in a
[29:37]way it is we do have Hadith about this as well right
[29:40]there's um actually a very interesting book that's been published by Islamic
[29:42]education of the World Federation uh for the Hadith on the Quran
[29:48]sorry a nice plug in there definitely you know and um it's
[29:54]so it's a really good pocket little book to get it's online
[29:56]as well available but I remember there's a Hadith in this book
[30:00]uh where it mentions the same thing you know the one of
[30:04]the imamsam is quoted as saying that the heart goes through Iqbal
[30:08]and edubar so this receptivity and kind of you know the heart
[30:12]becomes receptive at times has spiritual actions and spiritual uh you know
[30:16]acts of worship and sometimes we go through the bar this kind
[30:23]of retracting push we become kind of pulled away from acts of
[30:26]worship so the Hadith goes on to mention that when you read
[30:30]the Quran and you feel that your heart is being transformed by
[30:32]the words you're feeling like you're being moved by the words of
[30:35]Allah then the Hadith continued to recite the Quran because you your
[30:41]heart your enough your spiritual heart that is your soul is receptive
[30:45]it's accepting it it's it's it wants more uh and then the
[30:48]Hadith says when when you find that you get to a point
[30:52]where your heart is no longer acknowledging these you know these words
[30:55]of Allah in the Quran uh it says then kind of step
[30:59]back and stop your recitation of the Quran at that point in
[31:02]time right and I think there's again that recognition that um we're
[31:06]going through these ups and downs in life um there's always going
[31:10]to be that ebb and flow of the life that lead not
[31:15]only physical world but at a spiritual level um and when our
[31:19]heart our spiritual heart is uh you know receptive is is is
[31:21]wanting more spirituality then we have to give it that right whatever
[31:27]the heart whatever the nafs wants at that time in terms of
[31:30]spiritual nourishment um and when we feel you know that you know
[31:33]we're reading the Quran and we're reading let's say Dua Kumail on
[31:37]a Thursday night or do a nut bar Friday afternoon or Friday
[31:39]morning and it's not moving us it's not getting us to that
[31:42]level of recognition of Allah um as hard as it may seem
[31:48]but you know we have to recognize that we're maybe not in
[31:50]a position right then to continue with that act of of of
[31:54]of worship and sometimes I would say that you know based on
[31:56]what I've read from some of our Scholars it could be much
[32:01]more detrimental to the human soul to push it when it's not
[32:03]whether it's not in a mood right again you look at our
[32:08]physical body of somebody who goes to the gym to work out
[32:10]you know they know when they're at their limit and if they
[32:13]push themselves I mean it's good to push yourself you don't want
[32:16]to just give up but you know you'll recognize that a point
[32:18]may come where in your physical workout if you push yourself too
[32:22]much you're going to hurt something physically right you'll heard a physical
[32:24]part of your body um so I think as Believers we have
[32:29]to recognize that even in terms of spirituality there are times where
[32:33]it's where to to read let's say you know as much Quran
[32:37]as we do in the month of Ramadan right another time we
[32:40]just might want to read a page and be and kind of
[32:41]you know close the Quran and move on um so we have
[32:46]to recognize that we will go through those stages and again maybe
[32:48]that's also a part of the message of rasulullah was that you
[32:52]know that change in Reformation that we also recognize that that change
[32:57]will come gradually right it won't be just you know a a
[33:00]concert and constant energy burst right that we're running on on on
[33:05]you know caffeine let's say for 24 hours right we will have
[33:07]times where we will have to take it easy and allow the
[33:11]soul to kind of recover and then kind of Take It Forward
[33:14]from there then I never actually knew about that having to take
[33:18]a step back where it would be detrimental which is really interesting
[33:21]to me because personally for myself and many people I'm sure who
[33:26]are tuning in can probably relate to the peak and trough of
[33:29]the when you're trying to change the motivation to change um that
[33:33]is really really interesting and really interesting food for thought for sure
[33:36]um I do think we're gonna take a short break right now
[33:40]so all the viewers whoever's watching thank you so much for staying
[33:43]with us but we're going to be right back Insha'Allah with Sheikh
[33:50]Salim bimji see you in a short while [Music] thank you [Music]
[34:17][Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you
[36:21]assalamualaikum and welcome back our dear viewers um today inshallah you've already
[36:28]been tuning in but for those who have just joined us uh
[36:30]my name is khadeja and today we are talking about Prophet Muhammad
[36:34]and human change the applications of change inshallah and of course we're
[36:40]joined by the awesome Sheikh Salim binji who has been discussing the
[36:46]Practical applications of change and inshallah we continue our discussion at this
[36:51]point so Sheikh before we went off on a short break we
[36:54]talked about how the heart Ebbs and flows in terms of motivation
[37:00]to change now from a psychological point of view um there is
[37:03]this whole concept of internal and external locus of control where change
[37:07]comes from the within and not from external influences um I think
[37:12]this is very much a sort of echoed in Islam where for
[37:16]change to be accepted properly in a person it needs to be
[37:20]organic and it needs to come from within as opposed to coming
[37:25]from or being imposed from the outside so I wondered if you
[37:29]could please share some uh information or some light on how the
[37:31]prophet applied this particular principles yeah so you know you definitely correct
[37:38]that uh you know any any time we try to force something
[37:43]on somebody you know the the Hue I think human reaction is
[37:48]that we people will rebel against forced change um and so I
[37:53]think the the message of the prophet in the Quran was was
[37:57]never to force you know compel people um even you know the
[38:00]very famous verse which is or the portion of the verse which
[38:02]is you know unfortunately many times misused and abused where Allah says
[38:08]verse 256 uh the very beginning of that verse that there's no
[38:15]compulsion compulsion in religion uh you know although that specifically has a
[38:18]particular meaning in terms of you cannot compel people to come into
[38:21]religion to submit to Allah religion is free to either accept or
[38:27]reject but one of the things that we do see you know
[38:31]is that we can never force people to engage in any act
[38:35]I mean physically you can't force them but until we recognize um
[38:39]the merits and the worth of it you know it'll be very
[38:43]hard to convince somebody to do it wholeheartedly and for the right
[38:47]reasons um so I think we have many examples of the time
[38:49]of the prophets right that he gave the message and then allowed
[38:55]people uh you know time to kind of reflect and Ponder upon
[38:56]it even if you go right back to the early days it
[39:00]was about you know preaching you know I mean for the first
[39:05]time initially it was his first 40 years before the official prophethood
[39:08]has announced where he's building up his character and then once he
[39:13]announces once he's given the permission by a lot to officially announce
[39:17]the nabua the prophethood it then began Begins the second kind of
[39:21]stage or journey in his life of um showing the people the
[39:25]beauty of the religion right it was never about compelling them it
[39:29]was about showing them the the merits of change the Merit of
[39:33]you know coming into Islam uh allowing them to recognize what they
[39:40]had been kind of missing out on I would say right the
[39:42]uh the the spiritual uh obviously the spiritual benefits the social cohesion
[39:47]that the religion was bringing amongst the the early companions um so
[39:52]he never had to force religion down the throat of anybody or
[39:55]even Force the performance of the acts of worship right it was
[39:58]something which just organically as people saw the beauty of Allah right
[40:02]because that's how it started you you can't force people into it
[40:05]once you teach them about Allah which is what the you know
[40:10]initial verses of the Quran were talking about Allah his centrality his
[40:13]you know the god-centric vision that Islam was presenting once people can
[40:18]accept Allah as the one Creator rejects all the idols that they
[40:21]had been worshiping up until that time uh recognize Allah for who
[40:26]he is and the role that he plays then it became easy
[40:29]for the Believers to act and to perform the acts of worship
[40:34]right it wouldn't it didn't happen that there would be let's say
[40:37]questioning the prophet they saw him praying and they recognize that this
[40:42]is the way to worship God so they followed the prophet right
[40:44]they didn't have to ask rasulullah will give us the philosophy why
[40:47]do we pray why are you standing why are you going into
[40:51]cool why are you doing such that why are you going through
[40:53]all of these motions right but no I think that early community
[40:57]of Believers and I think this is something that we we lack
[41:00]today in our modern era is we try to quantify and we
[41:04]try to get to the bottom of why Allah wants certain acts
[41:07]of worship done in a certain way but I think the prophet
[41:12]began when because he was teaching taheed to people and and you
[41:14]know the centrality of Allah in their lives once they're able to
[41:17]accept that you know there is one Creator only and there is
[41:21]only one law giver and all the other aspects of tea that
[41:24]he would speak about then it became easy for people to uh
[41:28]worship Allah you know later on he became easy for the women
[41:32]to wear the you know to to not wear the hijaba to
[41:34]complete the wearing of the hijab women had a former recovering at
[41:39]the time of the Prophet the Hadith the verses came to complement
[41:42]the hijab already being worn and it didn't become an issue of
[41:45]the Prophet having to you know quarrel or bicker with the women
[41:50]and argue about you know the limits because they had already believed
[41:53]in this concept they already believed in the Oneness of God and
[41:56]that he was the one to give laws so it didn't have
[42:00]to be something that they were forced or compelled to do knowing
[42:03]that is the messenger of God and he had never told a
[42:07]lie in his life and so whatever he was bringing from Allah
[42:09]as Revelation was obviously what Allah expected from them um so I
[42:14]think we have to again keep that in mind as well when
[42:17]we look at our own lives about you know that that level
[42:20]of worship and how it how we get to it and that
[42:21]that process of change is we kind of have to look at
[42:25]it from again that perspective I would say of recognizing who Allah
[42:29]is and the the role of centrality of of a submission to
[42:35]Allah so that is really interesting where you mentioned that the people
[42:39]at the prophet's time believed in what he said um and took
[42:42]on board and made the relevant changes that the prophet brought um
[42:46]there is a question from a viewer actually that I've just received
[42:51]in sort of in relation to this um and they say what
[42:56]did Prophet Muhammad do differently um why were previous prophets less effective
[42:59]in their quest to change their people so for example uh Prophet
[43:05]news people he warned them for so so long um prophet and
[43:09]homosexuality homosexual Society um and even Prophet musa's children um where they
[43:15]started worshiping the cow so is it reluctance to change in those
[43:18]societies that happened or was there an ineffective method what is it
[43:24]that Prophet Muhammad did differently mm-hmm so I I think we definitely
[43:30]never uh I mean it's definitely a a very relevant pertinent question
[43:33]a very good question that came uh you know one of the
[43:37]things we recognize as a part of our our theology our belief
[43:40]system is that whatever the prophets did in their mission whether it
[43:45]be Prophet knew Prophet Musa Ibrahim Ismail all the way down to
[43:49]them the final messenger they all did the best that they could
[43:54]do given the circumstances that they lived in at the time that
[43:57]they were living in and the environment obviously that that they were
[44:01]in um we don't believe that they were kind of you know
[44:04]that they ever shortchanged a line in the message or the mission
[44:06]they did whatever they could do um but I think as Humanity
[44:13]progresses we're progressing from the time of you know the dawn of
[44:15]prophet Adam all the way to the time of the messenger of
[44:17]Allah obviously Humanity was also developing further maturing um and so I
[44:24]think we also you know first at one level we have to
[44:26]keep that in mind that prophets did the best that they could
[44:29]do given their circumstances um I think at another level we see
[44:36]that the human intellect and the mind has been progressing um and
[44:40]so maybe we can understand from that that the previous prophets were
[44:44]successful to the extent of the willingness and the uh the level
[44:52]of acceptance of the people um and with the coming of the
[44:56]messenger of Allah you know it it could be multiple factors which
[44:58]even if we kind of extrapolate from that to look at the
[45:00]time of our 12th Imam his return um where we're told that
[45:08]at his time it'll be the the situation in on on planet
[45:10]Earth will be such because of the social Strife economic you know
[45:17]uh problems the political insecurities that people will be looking and wanting
[45:22]and eager for that change um so I definitely would say that
[45:26]it was it it has obviously to do with the humanity on
[45:28]a whole at that time at a particular time in human the
[45:33]the timeline of Humanity on Earth that they're looking for that change
[45:36]um but also obviously the uh The Messengers himself um you know
[45:43]he's kind of building upon previous uh Generations right so he's building
[45:48]on previous communities and previous mindsets so I think it becomes perhaps
[45:52]easier as they moved forward to be able to uh teach further
[45:59]right and and to kind of allow that that change to take
[46:02]place um yeah that does make sense actually um because like you
[46:11]mentioned change then comes from the person within and if Society or
[46:15]Humanity was still maturing then the inner Compass is also maturing um
[46:21]which at this point I would like to Pivot again to how
[46:25]changes motivated by the inside of an individual um so what's the
[46:30]message of Change by the prophet Muhammad conformant um to the inner
[46:35]and natural needs of the people at the time and if so
[46:40]how does that impact the change process foreign yeah I think it
[46:45]was I mean you know the um the I mean the very
[46:48]I mean one of the clear things we see at least in
[46:51]the early converts to Islam um other than obviously and and Lady
[46:54]Khadijah peace be upon her peace be upon both of them and
[46:58]there are obviously exceptions to the rule um but the companions right
[47:03]they um you know when they hear this message of the Prophet
[47:06]the equality amongst amongst the colors right that the black is no
[47:11]the Arab is no greater than the black or vice versa and
[47:14]these kind of teachings um this began obviously you know they were
[47:18]looking obviously for uh they were looking for kind of you know
[47:21]some validation I can say within Society um they're looking for obviously
[47:28]uh you know uh God as well I guess we could say
[47:29]because again these were people at that time who had connection to
[47:34]Revelation at that time um so I think it became easier for
[47:39]these people to accept because they were looking for God in their
[47:42]lives they didn't have any you know they didn't have this um
[47:44]you know they were let's see surrounded by material life or capitalism
[47:49]commercialism right so they were looking for something deeper um as as
[47:54]with many people even today right when you when you talk to
[47:58]many people who convert to Islam from other religions you know that
[48:00]they were looking for something deeper in life something with that gave
[48:04]life more meaning and purpose so I think that that is what
[48:07]kind of was that impetus for them to you know begin that
[48:10]change process um that they were looking for change um some people
[48:15]were kind of expecting you know those who followed the previous uh
[48:18]religions let's say a prophet Musa and Issa peace be upon them
[48:23]uh they were they realized that another Prophet was to come from
[48:26]Allah and so you know many of them at that one level
[48:30]were waiting for that final profit to come as well so it's
[48:32]kind of a combination of some who were awaiting a final messenger
[48:37]and Revelation and others who were kind of seeking out uh to
[48:40]seeking out that Creator and that kind of better life uh that
[48:43]were able to transition to the into Islam when the when the
[48:48]prophet began with his message again keep in mind his his character
[48:50]and personality and the way that he conveyed the teachings of Allah
[48:55]to those societies you know so you mentioned how uh the the
[49:00]coming of the Prophet or how perhaps some people looking for a
[49:05]deeper meaning in their life kind of acted as an impetus to
[49:07]get the change process started um so then after this process started
[49:14]in your opinion what factors helped maintain that change that they had
[49:19]begun the the good change of the people of Arabia at the
[49:21]time um well I mean I definitely I think the gradual revelation
[49:26]of Quran and as the verses were coming um you know you
[49:30]see this kind of in the early companions because they were eagerly
[49:33]waiting for ayat right it's unfortunately for us we have the Quran
[49:36]today 600 pages right and it becomes daunting because we just we
[49:41]try to read it to get to the end of the book
[49:43]right and we get to the end of the Quran let's say
[49:46]in Ramadan or another time and mashallah we close the Quran and
[49:49]we throw it on on the shelf behind us but if again
[49:52]if we put ourselves in the feet of those companions right like
[49:54]it wasn't like an entire Surah was coming down to the prophet
[49:57]it's not like Surah came in a half an hour right it
[50:01]was like few verses from this chapter from verses from that chapter
[50:04]you know Surah is coming down you know Surah al-khafirun is being
[50:08]revealed Surah is coming so it's almost like that gradual verse that
[50:12]you know that verse every day or a couple of verses every
[50:16]day or every week is kind of keeping people in suspense and
[50:18]on their toes they're like okay now what now what is Allah
[50:21]you know going to teach us what does the prophet Allah going
[50:23]to teach us something that that kind of gradual process of learning
[50:29]the religion also it kept them kind of intrigued and uh attached
[50:32]to the religion um and maybe that's even why you know we
[50:35]have these Hadith that tell us that minimum a Believer should try
[50:40]and recite 50 verses of the Quran a day um and obviously
[50:43]it's you know we all leave we all need different kinds of
[50:45]lives and it's difficult but I think that connection that daily connection
[50:48]with Quran could almost mimic in a way the life of the
[50:54]early companions where they were getting a daily dose of the Quran
[50:56]right we have these apps you know a daily dose of the
[50:59]Quran a daily verse of the Quran um you know or lectures
[51:03]or videos that come out you know a quranic thought every day
[51:05]or every week a video so I think those kinds of things
[51:10]in our lives if we want to try and maybe mimic how
[51:12]the companions were kind of feeling as uh they were going through
[51:17]that gradual progressionism you know that process of reading a verse a
[51:20]day or five verses a day and thinking like these are being
[51:22]revealed like now let's say to me right you know through the
[51:28]media now we've kind of developed that kind of closer Affinity rather
[51:31]than looking at the Quran as a book of 600 pages and
[51:36]how daunting it is to read it at one go if we
[51:37]took it like that it may it may have more of a
[51:40]change in us because we'd read five or ten verses and reflect
[51:44]on it just as those early companions were doing and we would
[51:47]actually try and internalize right what was what is coming down right
[51:52]and then moving forward every day like that um I think that
[51:56]would be probably much more beneficial in our own personal change in
[51:59]our lives today rather than just saying okay Ramadan comes I'll read
[52:02]the Quran in 30 days and then close the book you know
[52:06]yeah yeah yeah I feel like in Ramadan it's like it's like
[52:11]a competition who can finish the Quran first by the end of
[52:15]the month yeah yeah but yeah unfortunately we don't have chronic ayas
[52:19]being revealed I think the next best thing as you said is
[52:24]an app so we we use what we can inshaallah which then
[52:27]takes me to like a bringing this application to today's world and
[52:31]bringing the message of the holy prophet uh to how it affects
[52:37]us today what issues do we as shias need to change in
[52:39]ourselves in order to better embody the the message of the prophet
[52:47]um where do we start you know it there's that you know
[52:58]not to sound cliche but there's so much you know um I
[53:01]think alhamdulillah as a global community of shias especially um I think
[53:07]we're on the right track definitely you know uh one of the
[53:11]verses that just comes to mind and um is how Allah speaks
[53:17]about the migration from Mecca to Medina right and how the companions
[53:21]they had left their homes their possessions uh their you know they
[53:25]had to literally like flee overnight as many of our community members
[53:27]let's say she has from many parts of the world whether it
[53:32]be East Africa India Pakistan Iraq Afghanistan they've left sometimes overnight as
[53:36]refugees and they've come to a new country in North America Europe
[53:40]so on and so forth um you know in chapter 59 Surah
[53:45]al-shar Allah speaks about this beautiful picture of the people of Medina
[53:50]the what we call the ansar how they were getting the city
[53:53]of Medina and their homes ready to welcome in the mahajiras those
[53:58]who are coming from Mecca the people who left everything behind and
[54:02]it's beautiful how Allah he says in one part of the verse
[54:05]he says that um that these people of Medina they give preferential
[54:14]treatment to the people of Mecca the muhajirun even though the people
[54:20]of Madina were in need so meaning put other people ahead of
[54:24]yourself right you you know we all have our own you know
[54:28]needs and wants to living in society we have bills to pay
[54:30]mortgages you know uh heating these expenses um but recognizing that one
[54:38]of the beauties of the companions of the Prophet that were in
[54:40]Medina was that they overlooked all their own personal challenges and needs
[54:45]to recognize that there were people who were in a much more
[54:50]difficult position financially and emotionally spiritually than they were and I think
[54:57]as a community alhamdulillah we've been able to recognize a rise to
[55:01]the occasion when there are Refugee crisis around the world we open
[55:04]up our homes our hearts our wallets our purses are open to
[55:07]helping our fellow brothers and sisters who are fleeing you know war-torned
[55:14]or you know regions of natural disasters um so I think we
[55:17]have to look at you know and this calls for an entire
[55:20]series of discussions um on looking at how Islam was able to
[55:23]transform um the early Community right because obviously the prophet gave these
[55:30]verses to them and he was living the quranic ethos as well
[55:32]but we have to really sit down and study how those respected
[55:36]Companions of the messenger of Allah how they how they were transformed
[55:40]also into being who they became later on right there was a
[55:43]respectable and Noble companions people like Salman abuzar and hundreds of other
[55:52]Noble companions um so I I for me to pinpoint what is
[55:55]one thing is that she has we can do is a challenge
[55:56]but I think definitely we have to look at ourselves and and
[56:03]try to put ourselves in the mirror of uh the early Companions
[56:06]and see what they were doing right and see are we am
[56:11]I not we but am I personally following even one example of
[56:14]the respected companions if so you know I checked that box off
[56:19]and I go and try to see what else were the companions
[56:20]involved in that I can try and emulate right is it the
[56:24]level of respect for the messenger of Allah is it their desire
[56:27]for knowledge right um not just super not just superficial knowledge of
[56:33]a WhatsApp that comes right you know I can't imagine what the
[56:37]prophet would be doing right you know if he was here today
[56:41]would he be sending out tweets and and you know tick tocks
[56:43]uh you know I would presume can you imagine oh God yeah
[56:49]but you know I mean those were companions who were you know
[56:52]deep in in search of Islamic knowledge right like you know the
[56:55]prophet would tell them seek knowledge even if you need to go
[56:59]to China right I mean uh you know today we have the
[57:02]world at our fingertips as is evident from this conversation we're having
[57:05]across the ocean um but still you know we have we have
[57:08]young women and men who travel to the furthest parts of the
[57:12]world to seek Islamic knowledge right so I think we all each
[57:15]each individual Shia we have to look at ourselves personally and as
[57:19]the Quran says we know ourselves better than anybody else and we
[57:22]have to look at ourselves and say that am I living up
[57:26]to the ideals of the messenger of Allah am I living up
[57:28]to the ideals of the quranic uh Vision or picture of what
[57:33]a Believer should be am I am I making that Progressive change
[57:35]to better become a better believer based on on how the companions
[57:40]were able to it completely changed their lives because we're talking about
[57:45]people who live again lived a life of of you know of
[57:47]polytheism of idol worship and you know um I'm sure they're we're
[57:53]speaking to people or people are listening to us today who came
[57:56]into Islam maybe a week ago maybe a month ago maybe a
[58:00]year ago um but there may be also people watching us today
[58:02]who have been Muslims for 50 60 years right so we all
[58:07]need to recognize where we are at and where the ideal is
[58:09]and obviously one of the best ways other than knowing ourselves is
[58:14]to do our own self-introspection our own reading of the Quran and
[58:19]recognizing where we stand in in in the sight of Allah absolutely
[58:24]thank you so so much for that inshallah I hope that everyone
[58:29]has been able to everyone shooting has been able to take something
[58:32]away from the show Insha'Allah um and I pray that we all
[58:37]have Allah gives us the strength to make those little changes as
[58:40]you mentioned Sheikh to look at the companions of the Prophet like
[58:42]the prophet and tick just one box off another box of Insha'Allah
[58:47]um and can't believe the hour has gone by very quickly so
