[0:08]we began in the previous session on Monday we began talking about
[0:14]and we mentioned that there is the roots of Faith which are
[0:22]believing in the monotheism of God believing in the Oneness of God
[0:27]um and thenal the justice of God and then the prophets and
[0:32]the imams and the day of judgment these are beliefs these are
[0:36]things that I can't follow someone these are things that are in
[0:41]the heart it's not about practice it's about what you believe in
[0:44]then you have just like a tree has roots those are the
[0:49]beliefs the roots and then you have the branches so there are
[0:56]10 branches to Islam means branches so what we cover um from
[1:03]yes last session we covered Salah as one of the most important
[1:09]and the first of the the prayer that is Wag the prayer
[1:12]that is incumbent upon every single Muslim now there's another another nine
[1:19]of the so you have the Salah and then you have fasting
[1:25]and then you have Haj and you have Z and you have
[1:28]you have you have you have you have and and J so
[1:33]we're going to explain them inshallah but now next we're going to
[1:37]cover the fasting so fasting is from the uh from the so
[1:46]when do we fast as Muslims what time of the month what
[1:50]time of the year do we fast yes during the month of
[1:57]Ramadan and Ramadan is the ninth Islamic month so right now we
[2:01]are in September September is what September is also the ninth month
[2:04]but in the Islamic lunar months we go by the Hal we
[2:11]go by the moon so it's changing every every year every year
[2:17]you go back 10 days the Islamic calendar goes back about 10
[2:22]days because the lunar month uh is either 29 or 30 days
[2:25]so you lose about 10 days so it keeps going back every
[2:29]year it goes back by around 10 to 11 days and we
[2:34]look at the Moon the birth of the new moon when we
[2:35]cite the Moon that is when we begin a new Islamic month
[2:41]so the month the right now we are in the month of
[2:45]R for example which is the month of the birth of the
[2:46]holy prophet and in a few days is the birth of the
[2:50]holy prophet so the month of Ramadan is the ninth Islamic month
[2:54]the month of muharam for example is the first Islamic month the
[2:58]month of the one one that we performed the hajen is the
[3:01]12th month so there are different months the ninth month is the
[3:08]the the month of Ramadan so fasting is mentioned within the Quran
[3:13]Allah subhana tala mentions it for example inah Bak chapter 2 verse
[3:19]183 to 186 oh Believers fasting has been prescribed for you just
[3:32]as it was prescribed upon people before you so perhaps you will
[3:38]become mindful of Allah so that you may attain piety and tawa
[3:43]so fasting is not only W today from the from the ru
[3:51]rules of religion like prayer is prayer only exclusive to Muslims or
[3:55]you see other religions also have prayer other religions also have prayer
[4:00]fasting is it exclusive to only Muslims or you see other religions
[4:03]have a type of fasting other religions have it Haj pilgrimage they
[4:08]have their own type of pilgrimage zakat and giving charity they also
[4:15]have so sometimes we hear some Muslims especially the younger ones they're
[4:19]like oh why do we have to pray why do we have
[4:19]to fast what this is something that any all the other religions
[4:24]also have we have our own type of fasting our own type
[4:27]of prayer so what is fasting FAS ing a linguistically linguistically it
[4:37]means to abstain to hold back from something so there's different types
[4:41]of fasting in pre-islamic times pre-islamic times like during the time of
[4:48]Jesus during the time of Zacharia Zachary the father of Yahya John
[4:53]the Baptist and during the time of maram the mother of Jesus
[4:59]there was a type of fasting which was known as fasting from
[5:05]speaking is it hard do you think it's hard to hold yourself
[5:12]from talking yeah it is so some people especially some people it's
[5:16]really hard for them other people it's okay for them I don't
[5:18]know who who you might know that is really hard for them
[5:22]to hold back but in the past there was this type of
[5:25]fasting called so Allah subhana wa tala tells uh describes maram maram
[5:34]the mother of Jesus when she gave birth to ISA she Allah
[5:39]ordered her I I did a nether I did a vow to
[5:56]do fasting so I'm not going to speak because I'm fasting so
[6:03]this was a type of fasting that the the probably the Jewish
[6:09]faith had because maram and Zakaria they were from the Jews of
[6:12]their time they were from the religious law-abiding Jews of their time
[6:19]similarly Zakaria uh when he comes out after Allah Allah subhana wa
[6:23]tala tells him that we're going to give you we're going to
[6:26]give you when he came out of the he remained quiet for
[6:31]three day he remained quiet and he did not speak and he
[6:36]would only speak with signals to people and this was a miracle
[6:39]so but from amongst the fasting that even other religions have like
[6:45]Christianity like Judaism other religions have is also the fasting from holding
[6:51]back on eating holding back on desires holding back on giving your
[6:59]soul everything what it wants and you see that this is also
[7:02]um something that we Muslims have we Muslims we have fasting in
[7:09]the month of Ramadan which we hold back on eating and holding
[7:12]back on for example sexual desires from dawn from F all the
[7:19]way until M all the way until sunset this is the fasting
[7:21]for the Muslims now of course today some Muslim might come and
[7:24]say why is it that we we Muslims we pray five times
[7:29]a day we fast whereas you look at for example Christians they
[7:32]don't have the type of fasting the Quran says they used to
[7:37]fast but they don't do it anymore the answer is Christianity about
[7:41]a while after after um Jesus after Jesus was raised and separated
[7:48]from the people there was a man one of the one of
[7:50]the men who came and he defined Christianity his name is Paul
[7:57]Paul he defined Christianity he didn't he didn't live he wasn't one
[8:01]of the Disciples of Jesus during his life but later on he
[8:04]came and he really had a huge impact on Christianity one of
[8:09]the things that Paul did is that he removed the laws from
[8:13]Christianity today this is why you see Christians they don't have that
[8:18]many rules and laws as opposed to Judaism Judaism has a lot
[8:21]of laws and rules who's the one who removed the laws and
[8:23]the rules from Christianity it was Paul so the F the rules
[8:29]of fasting the rules rules of hijab the rules of eating drinking
[8:32]alcohol eating pork a lot of that even though they're mentioned in
[8:35]the bible but today you see many Christians they don't practice it
[8:40]they don't practice it because someone came after Jesus and removed it
[8:46]alhamdulillah luckily we Muslims we we our Islam has been preserved to
[8:49]an extent and we are we continue to fast and we continue
[8:56]to pray so now can you go to the next slide please
[8:57]the philosophy of fasting so what is the philosophy of fasting why
[9:01]do we Muslims have to fast can someone give me some answers
[9:08]why do we fast what are some reasons yes health benefits okay
[9:14]what kind of health benefits cuz you're fasting that's a that's a
[9:27]smart one yes everyone give them a loud salawat it could help
[9:34]you lose weight unless you're Middle Eastern or Arab because when we
[9:37]fast in the month of Ramadan what do we do after we
[9:41]have that bulawa and the the the the sweets and we make
[9:46]up for all of that yes attain self-control this is very good
[9:56]yes sister in the back oh you you're going to say the
[10:01]same thing yes sister how to be grateful very good how to
[10:07]be grateful anyone else yes disciplines you okay yes clears your mind
[10:15]what is the goal that the Quran gives us you guys mentioned
[10:20]all of the worldly goals which there's they're very good but there's
[10:23]one goal that the Quran gives us so that you gain God
[10:36]Consciousness it helps you have that sense of God Consciousness when you're
[10:44]fasting you remind yourself that God is watching you you remind yourself
[10:48]that you're doing this for God those moments of hunger you continue
[10:51]to remind yourself that what you're doing is for Allah subhana wa
[10:54]tala and it's it's an act of worship that you're not doing
[11:02]it for anyone else right now for example charity I could come
[11:06]and give money in front of people so that people clap for
[11:10]me and say mashallah this guy's very generous or when it comes
[11:13]to prayer I pray in my room very quickly but in the
[11:18]Masjid I slow down and I recite very nice so that people
[11:21]are like wow this guy is really religious this guy prays really
[11:27]nice but fasting if you're fasting you're doing it it's between you
[11:31]and God you're not doing it so other people see some people
[11:34]they're fasting they go and others are not watching and they go
[11:38]and they take a bite from the hamburger in the fridge that's
[11:41]not considered fasting you're cheating yourself a person who's fasting is it's
[11:46]something between you and God and that's tawa that means God is
[11:49]watching you what you're doing you're going through hunger for the sake
[11:54]of God not because of this person is watching me or that
[11:57]person is watching me but only purely because because Allah subhana tala
[12:01]is watching and that is tawa so you attain tawa nearness to
[12:07]God and God Consciousness you attain self-control you live Health healthier you
[12:11]have you you begin to empathize with those who are needy you
[12:16]put yourself in their position some of us we never feel hungry
[12:21]because we keep eating three meals a day and between each meal
[12:26]how many snacks do we have we have snacks here and there
[12:31]so we don't ever feel hungry there are some people they never
[12:35]feel hungry because the time of their next meal they're still full
[12:38]from the last meal but they eat because everyone else is eating
[12:42]and this type of Lifestyle when we go through this type of
[12:48]Lifestyle sometimes we become disconnected with the world we become disconnected with
[12:53]the needy with the people who are suffering we start having a
[12:56]very narrow perspective on life and we only look at things from
[13:01]our own perspective sometimes going hungry could be a form of self-discipline
[13:08]it could be good for me this is why the holy prophet
[13:13]he talks about Hunger he says he says from the best hours
[13:26]for me are the hours and the moments that I'm hungry and
[13:29]Afraid because that's the time that I know I I have a
[13:33]Lord and I return to my Lord because when I'm feeling comfortable
[13:36]I don't think about God we only turn to God when we're
[13:38]afraid we only turn to God when there's turbulence in the airplane
[13:44]that's when we remember God we only remember God when we have
[13:47]a loved one uh someone who's dying or we have a disease
[13:51]the doctor told us then we start praying and doing Dua because
[13:54]that's the nature of human being when we're comfortable we forget God
[13:58]when we are in need then we return to Allah subhana T
[14:03]so the prophet says I would like to be in need I
[14:05]would like to be poor I would like to be afraid not
[14:08]because I go and ask other people but because I want to
[14:13]be poor to God I want to be hungry for for God
[14:18]so Allah subhana gives me and in thisi he had a companion
[14:26]who was young but he was so wise and he was so
[14:30]smart and he used to go and debate the atheists and the
[14:33]agnostics and people that didn't believe in God his name is hasham
[14:37]he was very young he would he he didn't even have a
[14:43]full beard and he used to go and debate the the big
[14:46]philosophers of the time and he was a student of IM Sadam
[14:50]and IM sad would bring him near and he would Empower him
[14:53]he would tell him oh Hasam go and debate these people of
[14:56]course the IM would not allow anyone to go and debate but
[14:59]because he saw that hasham was worthy so hasham he ask the
[15:04]IM he tells him why do we fast what is the what
[15:08]is the reason for fasting so he tells him Allah made fasting
[15:18]waj so that the the rich and the poor could be equal
[15:23]in the eyes of God so that they could be equal they
[15:25]both feel hungry because the the the rich person never feels hungry
[15:52]they never feel hungry they always have food so he wanted Allah
[15:55]subhana tala wanted those who have to think of those who don't
[16:01]have next slide please so we said fasting is W in the
[16:07]month of Ramadan and what are the types of fasting of course
[16:10]we Muslims I mentioned that there's a fasting from talking this is
[16:13]not in Islam today if you find a Muslim that says I'm
[16:18]fasting from cam this is B this is not in our religion
[16:21]this is in the previous religions this is something that we cannot
[16:27]do um but then you we have the we mentioned the philosophy
[16:30]of fasting what are the conditions when does fasting become become waj
[16:34]so what's the first condition yes you have to be B that's
[16:42]number one we mentioned about prayer when does prayer become waj when
[16:49]you are at the age of puberty at the age of T
[16:50]when is the age of tle for men and when is the
[16:54]age of tle for women yes maram when is the age of
[17:00]t for girls nine okay nine hij this is according to the
[17:03]m meaning the majority of the scholars but how old is maram
[17:09]almost nine so she knows it mashallah so so the the M
[17:15]meaning the majority of the scholars now there are some Scholars there
[17:20]are some Scholars that say at the age of 13 so this
[17:26]is especially for some parents who they come and they say my
[17:30]child is nine my child is not ready to fast they their
[17:34]body can physically cannot handle it they could do of another as
[17:37]long as they believe that is has is one of the or
[17:42]one of the knowledgeable Scholars the known knowledgeable Scholars of the time
[17:47]you can't just go and find someone because it's easy but if
[17:50]if this person is there's a chance that this person might be
[17:54]the the the knowledgeable or from amongst the knowledgeable then you could
[17:57]follow that person so um puberty for the for the girls age
[18:04]nine hij that means 8 years and eight months and a couple
[18:10]of days that's when the tle happens and for the for the
[18:14]boys the age of 13 or when the signs of puberty show
[18:17]when the signs of puberty begin to show so it could be
[18:23]before that as well now it is recommended to encourage those who
[18:28]have not reached puberty yet to fast if they can can so
[18:30]even Salah and fasting we have narrations that say encourage your children
[18:35]to pray at the age of seven the age of seven encourag
[18:39]them to pray they understand just like you encourage them to go
[18:42]to school just like you encourage them to do well in their
[18:46]test we encourage our kids and our family to do a lot
[18:48]of these things encourage them at the age of seven so if
[18:52]they couldn't then they could break their fast it's not wag on
[18:55]them but at least let them try another condition for obligation which
[19:03]probably should I should have put it before puberty is what the
[19:10]the comprehension and we mentioned that yesterday the other day as well
[19:17]with uh with pray with prayer the first condition for Te meaning
[19:22]God does not hold someone who is in a coma or someone
[19:25]who is is uh mentally not stable meaning they can't make rational
[19:33]decisions then Allah subhana tala does not hold this person accountable so
[19:37]comprehension and intellect and and puberty another one this is for the
[19:41]woman Purity from the menstrual cycle so a lady on her or
[19:51]on her NE so there's three types there's three types of basically
[19:57]blood that a a female would see and one is called which
[20:05]is the monthly period the monthly cycle so during the cycle there
[20:10]is no there is no fasting and there is no prayer the
[20:14]fasting she has to make up the fasting she has to make
[20:19]up after the month of Ramadan as for the prayer the prayer
[20:24]is not waj during the month during the monthly cycle so this
[20:27]is the it's called the and then there's nefas nefas is up
[20:35]to 10 days after giving birth up to 10 days after giving
[20:43]birth as long as if a lady is um basically bleeding then
[20:48]then um during that time there's there's no Salah and there's no
[20:54]fasting that's called nefas of course there's a misconception I hear a
[20:57]lot of people they come and they say the nefas is 40
[20:58]days the nefas is not 40 days the nefas is only 10
[21:04]days up to 10 days after 10 days and even the after
[21:09]10 days what does it become what is it called after the
[21:14]10 days so you have and there's no prayer or fasting during
[21:23]the and during the up to 10 days after 10 days it
[21:28]becomes there is Salah and there's fasting there's Salah and fasting but
[21:34]then depending there there are specific rules for this depending on how
[21:39]heavy the the bleeding is the there might be a shower that
[21:46]might be needed for every three times a day or or once
[21:51]a day or a wo for every prayer this is this is
[21:53]a different case it's called you could look up the rules of
[21:58]but the and the there is no prayer and there's no fasting
[22:01]although prayer you do not have to make up fasting you have
[22:06]to make up after the month of Ramadan so this is one
[22:12]another um condition for obligation is that fasting should not be harmful
[22:18]to a person so Allah subhana T says in the Quran if
[22:25]you're sick if you have diabetes and the doctor told you you
[22:29]cannot fast you have to eat something or else your sugar levels
[22:34]are going to go down and you're going to faint are you
[22:36]allowed to fast you're not allowed to fast son it's not even
[22:41]wag on you you you should not fast because you're going if
[22:46]it's going to cause harm and cause pain and the doctor is
[22:49]telling you don't do it sometimes the doctor tells you no no
[22:54]no no you should never fast you sick then fasting is not
[22:56]even W sometimes the doctor could tell you if you you want
[23:02]to fast you could for example change your medicine take your medicine
[23:05]during the time ofar time here if the doctor tells you you
[23:09]can fast then you would be allowed to fast you would just
[23:13]have to change your schedule around but if the doctor tells you
[23:15]no there's no way to work around this you can't fast then
[23:22]fasting is not wag upon you of course if I'm sick and
[23:24]I can't fast right now I make it up later when I
[23:29]get better I make make it up if I have a terminal
[23:32]illness that blocks me or I have to keep drinking water for
[23:34]example I have to keep eating every couple hours I have to
[23:37]keep taking medicine even if I have to take one pill one
[23:41]pill I'm not hungry but I have to take that pill or
[23:45]else I'm going my my Situation's going to get worse then I
[23:48]break my fast and then I make it up after when I'm
[23:52]better if I'm not going to get better some people for example
[23:54]their whole life they keep getting worse they don't get better then
[23:57]this person gives fidya they give 34 of a kilo of food
[24:04]of wheat of rice of barley to the poor for each day
[24:08]34 of a kilo this is the minimum and if they want
[24:11]to give more out of out of must out of recom recommendation
[24:16]they give one and a half kilo yes Ali no shots and
[24:23]IV do not break the fast shots and IV do not break
[24:28]the fast but any pill that you take or drink orally then
[24:31]that would break the fast yes if it goes down your throat
[24:42]then perhaps it would but if it's just the spray if it
[24:44]there's no liquid in it it's just a spray of Mist then
[24:50]it would not break the fast but if it's it's a actual
[24:52]it's a actual like you're swallowing something then it would yes but
[24:56]typically it would it's not meant to go down your throat so
[25:01]it wouldn't it shouldn't yes sister yes if you throw up on
[25:06]purpose yes or if you threw up because you're sick also you
[25:12]shouldn't be fasting do you throw up on purpose so so if
[25:23]it's if it was like something that just happened but you're not
[25:27]really sick and it just it uncontrollably then that would not break
[25:30]the fast yes so um this is one fasting should not be
[25:37]harmful to a person and uh another condition is um you must
[25:45]not be traveling so I have to stay in my town I
[25:48]have to be in my town if I go out of town
[25:51]I go to Toledo for example and I'm staying there for less
[25:56]than 10 days if I'm staying there for less than 10 days
[25:58]that I'm considered a MF I'm considered to be a traveler when
[26:04]I'm traveling I cannot fast yes that's not considered traveling so you
[26:15]have to you have to cross the county lines not the city
[26:20]lines the county lines like right now we're in Wayne County for
[26:24]example you have to go about 14 miles outside the county where
[26:31]it's not connected anymore yes God yes you have to make it
[26:40]up so if you're sick or you're or you're traveling if you
[26:44]did not fast you have to make it up after but it's
[26:48]not Haram say I went I was traveling is it haram for
[26:49]me to not fast no I can't fast when I'm traveling unless
[26:54]I'm staying somewhere for more than 10 days then I could fast
[26:56]or I leave my town for example I'm I'm planning on leaving
[27:03]from here to go for one day if I leave after noon
[27:05]after prayer the noon prayer then I could continue the fast that
[27:11]day but if I left before noon and at noon time I
[27:12]was not in a city that I'm living in and a town
[27:16]that I'm living in then I can't fast that day yes no
[27:22]it's not for us for us the Shia school of thought you
[27:31]cannot fast for the Sunni school of thought they say it's meaning
[27:35]you you have you could choose whether you want to or you
[27:39]don't want to for us it's not even prescribed on you yes
[27:43]who who had their hands up yes you could make it up
[27:50]when you have one year until the next Ramadan you make it
[27:53]up if you don't make it up within one year you have
[27:56]to give the fidya which is three4 of a kilo to the
[27:59]poor and you have to make it up if if one year
[28:02]passes and you didn't make it up yes yes if you travel
[28:09]you have to make it up yes but you it's not like
[28:13]you got anything wrong it's not counted against you you're traveling you're
[28:16]a MF yes Ahmed when did you leave in the morning you
[28:32]left and you came back before noon you're fine but if you
[28:34]left if you left in the morning and did not come back
[28:39]after by noon time you did not come back to your town
[28:44]by noon time then you're considered a comes and you're outside of
[28:50]the city therefore you do not fast that day if you're out
[28:57]of if you're out of the city you have the choice to
[29:01]break it but if you didn't if you did not break it
[29:02]say I went to Toledo at 8:00 a.m.
[29:07]and I came back by 11: and I did not eat anything
[29:08]then I could continue the fasting but if I was out I
[29:12]could eat something and break the fast are you confused sister okay
[29:20]so this is these are considered connected towns they're con they're considered
[29:26]um basically you you're not considered a traveler because they're really close
[29:31]to one another one once you leave the the greater area the
[29:36]greater area like say you're you're leaving Wason County and you're going
[29:40]towards an arbor you're you're leaving that way or you're leaving towards
[29:44]Toledo yeah so the the greater City area like do you see
[29:49]you when you see for example cities are not connected anymore and
[29:52]you're like traveling in the in the desert or in the in
[29:58]somewhere where there's no no town no living here these are all
[30:01]large cities the counties are also interconnected you would consider yourself a
[30:05]within within town but say you're traveling 14 miles the other way
[30:10]um like West for example you're traveling right West then you as
[30:16]soon as you leave like you leave a couple miles you're you
[30:18]hit the county line and then you're going where there's nothing on
[30:20]that side or South you're going then then you're you're considered a
[30:26]traveler but if you're in the cities the greater cities then you're
[30:29]you're all in one place yes that's not traveling yes yes okay
[30:38]can we go to the next slide please we'll go over the
[30:46]rules of fasting um so fasting abstaining from until abstaining from food
[30:54]abstaining from sexual pleasures from until with the intention of seeking near
[30:59]Ness to Allah subhana tala what did we mention the First Act
[31:03]of any any any worship what do you have to have first
[31:08]nia nia what does NIA mean yes you understand what you're doing
[31:16]and who you're doing it for that's the Nia you're doing it
[31:18]for God and I know what I'm doing I'm fasting I'm not
[31:22]just for example on a diet because I want to lose weight
[31:24]no I'm I'm actually I'm actually fasting this is why I'm doing
[31:29]it and I'm doing it I'm seeking nearness to Allah subhana T
[31:34]I'm not doing it because of social pressure because my parents are
[31:40]going to beat me up because of of some reasons no I'm
[31:43]doing it because God I'm I'm getting closer to Allah subhana tala
[31:49]so there are eight things that invalidate a fast okay so eating
[31:53]and drinking any type of eating or drinking during those hours with
[31:58]would break the fast even if I have a small sip just
[32:02]a small sip yes just a small sip you know a lot
[32:06]of times when you go outside the non-muslims they're like not even
[32:09]water yes not even water we could do it millions of people
[32:15]do it every year and there's no problem yes sister How does
[32:18]it go in your mouth if you accidentally like without you forgot
[32:27]and you drank water that you're still fasting accident if you're brushing
[32:38]your teeth you're allowed to brush your teeth if you accidentally swallow
[32:41]there's nothing wrong with that if you accidentally eat a full hamburger
[32:46]no no I'm serious if you forgot that you're fasting and you
[32:52]ate a full hamburger you forgot that you were fasting you woke
[32:54]up and you were you you really forgot that you're fasting fasting
[32:58]and then you realize that you were oh oh my God I'm
[33:02]fasting and I ate this whole hamburger and the fries and I
[33:04]drank the coke no no I'm saying if someone forgot I'm saying
[33:14]if someone forgot you basically had a whole meal and then you
[33:19]realize that I'm fasting you continue the fast that day but that
[33:22]does not happen a lot it doesn't happen but sometimes it does
[33:28]happen maybe you you you're unaware and you you drank a sip
[33:31]of water you forgot you forgot and you're you're unaware and you
[33:36]drank a sip of water Allah is not going to hold you
[33:38]accountable for that but if you say for example you you drinking
[33:44]and then you remembered that wait I'm fasting yeah you know what
[33:48]who cares and I drink some more then the fast is broken
[33:52]but as long as you are not aware that you're fasting the
[33:55]Hadith says that this is a gift from the angels to you
[34:09]yes so you spit it out blindly meaning that you didn't do
[34:19]it then then you're not accountable for it but the moment you
[34:24]realize you go and you spit it and you wash your mouth
[34:28]out that's it no then you have to go and lay upside
[34:35]down so it comes down you you spit it out if you
[34:44]couldn't spit it out it goes down you didn't control it going
[34:46]down then there's you didn't do anything it's not counted against you
[34:50]the breath the breath let it be the breath go wash your
[34:55]mouth from the breath so you guys get the Point basically it's
[34:59]all about you making the choice if I didn't if I didn't
[35:05]realize and I drank water then I'm not making that decision it's
[35:08]it's my Consciousness is not there Allah is not going to hold
[35:11]me accountable for that okay eating and drinking sexual PL intercourse masturbation
[35:19]um ascribing false things to God Prophet Muhammad and the 12 imams
[35:25]so basically coming and saying God said this Prophet Muhammad said this
[35:31]IM Ali said this and I know that they did not say
[35:33]that I'm lying I know that they did not say that that
[35:39]will break the fast um causing thick dust to reach the throat
[35:43]so for example you go and you you in a b in
[35:49]a bakery for example there's um what is it called flower everywhere
[35:54]and I'm just I'm just breathing it in and allowing it all
[35:57]to go in that would that would that's that's considered like thick
[36:03]dust or you're like in a sandstorm and you have your mouth
[36:06]open so barbecue maybe I mean if you're just smelling it it's
[36:13]not nothing of substance then it's okay but um here some Scholars
[36:18]they say smoking smoking because that's kind of like Thick Smoke it
[36:23]would invalidate it would invalidate the fast so smoking is in the
[36:27]in the category of thick dust yes so if it's if it's
[36:39]just um air part like air it does not break the fast
[36:43]but if if there are particles that are kind of edible that
[36:46]you swallow them then it would break the fast but typically it's
[36:48]just the type of air that's pushed in so it should not
[36:53]and you and when you do it you usually when they teach
[36:57]you how to how to use the asthma thing you have to
[36:59]breathe in so it goes into your lungs it's not going into
[37:04]your stomach it's going into your lungs this is going directly into
[37:08]your lungs yes Ali okay so you have to wear a mask
[37:14]like in the in the Middle East in the past they used
[37:18]to cover their they cover their face yes yeah if if it
[37:30]if you keep your head up there until it turns into it
[37:34]turns into water and then you swallow it that would break the
[37:36]fast but if it's just moisture it's just moisture then it doesn't
[37:42]if it's far enough it would be just if if it not
[37:43]moisture if it's just air air yes yeah then you're trying to
[37:51]break the fast because it's going to all this all this condensation
[37:53]is going to turn into water in the back of your throat
[37:57]and then you swall it it then that would break it yes
[38:06]ahed yeah that would break the fast okay um causing thick dust
[38:14]to reach the throat remaining in a state of ritual impurity or
[38:20]until time so say someone a woman needed to take her shower
[38:27]to end the J to end the or the or someone they
[38:33]need to take a shower so that they they are out of
[38:35]the state of impurity so they they they remain in that state
[38:41]so the sun is coming out and they're like you know what
[38:45]I'm not going to take a shower right now I'll take a
[38:46]shower later and they keep delaying it delaying it then you remained
[38:54]in that state then it's um you you that breaks the fast
[38:58]however ever say for example someone woke up at 8 9:00 a.m.
[39:04]and they realize that they are in a state of janaba they
[39:07]realize that they are in a state of ritual impurity then that
[39:11]one they just take the shower and they continue the fast this
[39:14]is remaining that means you were you were in that state of
[39:16]impurity before the F time before the fasting began okay yes no
[39:30]before fud 12:00 has nothing to do with it it's all F
[39:39]yes it could be the second before the second before F just
[39:45]before fer you make the intention oh so if you're making up
[39:54]a fast so you have different times to make an intention if
[39:57]you're making up a fast you have all the way until noon
[40:01]time so say I woke up today I woke up at 11:
[40:05]I I was sleeping in I woke up at 11: and I'm
[40:09]like you know what the day is short and noon is just
[40:13]in an hour I make the intention and I and I um
[40:17]and I continue that day for the month of Ramadan you have
[40:20]to make the intention before F during the month of Ramadan after
[40:24]the month of Ramadan if you're making up a fast making up
[40:28]a fast that you missed you have you have all the way
[40:29]until noon time to make the intention and if you don't have
[40:34]any makeup fast to make up but you want to do a
[40:38]must fast it'san you want to do a must fast you have
[40:40]all the way until time to make up the intention say one
[40:44]day you you you had your schedule flipped upside down and you
[40:48]slept all the way until 3 and you you were you know
[40:53]you you stayed up the whole night and you didn't you didn't
[40:56]feel hungry and you're like you know what let me just fast
[41:01]today you have all the way until M so there's three scenarios
[41:03]for Ramadan you make the intention before F or you make the
[41:07]intention in the beginning of Ramadan the beginning of the month you
[41:11]say I'm fasting this whole month you don't have to keep making
[41:13]intention every day you say I'm planning on fasting this whole month
[41:16]that's one for a makeup fast before before noon time you make
[41:22]the intention that's that's having said that you have not done anything
[41:26]to invalidate the fast and for mus fast you have all the
[41:29]way until M time maybe a minute before M you could do
[41:33]the you could say you you you you took a pill and
[41:37]you slept all the way until 5:00 p.m.
[41:41]6: p.m.
[41:38]and you're like m is just an hour I haven't done anything
[41:43]to fast to to break the fast I continue the fast that
[41:45]day yes and then you noon and are the same thing I'm
[41:56]not talking about the Sol I'm talking about the solar noon I'm
[41:59]not talking about 12:00 they tell you noon at 12:00 when we
[42:02]say noon we mean the time which is when the sun comes
[42:08]up and the shadow become decreases and then the shadow starts increasing
[42:12]when the moment the shadow in some areas in the world the
[42:15]shadow totally disappears in some areas the shadow does not disappear because
[42:20]of where we are it just becomes very short and then it
[42:22]start when it the moment it starts increasing that's noon time yes
[42:30]brother what's your name brother Daniel yes go ahead before the time
[42:36]of the H before the time of the H yes well they
[42:45]have systems even in the past they had systems of telling now
[42:49]you don't need that now you could just look up the you
[42:53]look up the um solar noon time you know through there's some
[42:57]websites some apps they'll tell you exactly when the is in the
[43:03]past they had ways of telling they had ways the shadow um
[43:08]I don't know they they had their ways of telling when new
[43:11]is yes anyone else okay um remaining in the state of ritual
[43:18]impurity applying liquid enema and vomiting intentionally meaning you you make yourself
[43:27]vomit intentionally this this would break the fast any questions regarding what
[43:31]has been said okay can we go to the next slide please
[43:35]there are things that are disliked there are things that are Mak
[43:39]but they don't invalidate the fast putting medication in the eyes applying
[43:44]in the eyes doing anything that causes weakness such as giving blood
[43:50]putting medication in the nose if you know it won't reach the
[43:53]throat so if it reaches the throat then it becomes Haram but
[43:57]if it doesn't you know it doesn't it's still Mak smelling aromatic
[44:02]plants going and smelling uh perfumes and colog and all these things
[44:06]having your teeth extract extracted or doing anything which would make your
[44:12]mouth bleed brushing teeth with a wet toothbrush so some people they're
[44:15]thirsty so they go and they put their toothbrush under cold water
[44:20]and then they come and they put it in their mouth so
[44:22]this is Mak even though you if you're swallowing it then it
[44:28]becomes it becomes um it breaks the fast but this is also
[44:31]Mak putting water in the mouth without any due cause immersing the
[44:38]entire head in the water for a female to put her whole
[44:40]body in the water to do something which may cause arousal without
[44:44]intending to ejaculate okay next slide please when does Ramadan begin yes
[44:53]sister this is this is the H we don't know there are
[44:58]some rules this is the the Hadith of the IM or the
[45:03]Hadith of the Prophet we follow religion is about meaning that we
[45:08]follow what we're ordered to do this is how it came to
[45:13]us yes go back to the next previous slide please yeah yeah
[45:27]unless you do upside down okay so when does Ramadan begin so
[45:35]when is when is fasting waj Upon Us during the month of
[45:41]Ramadan so one of the biggest dilemmas and issues that we have
[45:44]is when the month of Ramadan begins and when it ends every
[45:46]year we have this fight right is today Ramadan is today Ramadan
[45:52]is tomorrow every year we have this so what are the rules
[45:54]the rule is that when you see the present the Hal of
[46:00]Ramadan yourself if you saw it Ramadan began for you meaning the
[46:03]end of shaal you saw excuse me the end of um shahan
[46:08]you saw you saw the Hal therefore the next day would be
[46:14]the first of Ramadan or two just Witnesses see the Hal and
[46:17]there should be no reason to believe that they are mistaken so
[46:20]two just Witnesses they came and they told you I just went
[46:24]and I saw the Hal I saw the crescent and no reason
[46:29]to believe that they're mistaken means that if 300 people went out
[46:32]to see the Hal and only two people saw it are you
[46:35]going to believe them there's a very low chance if it's out
[46:39]there then that means three4 of them or half of them are
[46:43]going to have seen it so but if a very small group
[46:47]of people they said we saw it then it won't count um
[46:52]or 30 days have passed of shaan because the the Islamic months
[46:56]are either 29 days or 30 days not 31 right now for
[47:02]example you have October you have some months in the English calendar
[47:05]they're 31 days in the Islamic calendar it's either 29 or 30
[47:11]so on the eve of the 28th are we we look and
[47:16]we see is it going to be it's either 29 days so
[47:19]either the 30th day is the ne the the next day of
[47:23]the month or the 29th the on the either yes it's either
[47:29]either 29 or 30 days so we don't have a 31 day
[47:34]and we don't have a 28 day month only 29 or 30
[47:36]um it becomes widely accepted in your city by the people that
[47:41]Ramadan has begun you go to a city and you see everyone's
[47:43]fasting then you're like okay then obviously um someone you know they
[47:48]they have reasonable re they have reason to believe that the month
[47:54]of Ramadan has begun now I already mentioned this Miss fast must
[47:58]be made up within one year or else a kaf of a
[48:02]mud which is 34 of kilo of food is given for excused
[48:07]fasting for non- excused fasting so you have excused fasting and non-
[48:11]excused excused fasting is if I'm sick if I'm traveling I broke
[48:14]the fast non- excused fasting is I just felt like eating for
[48:18]no for no reason I felt like doing something that invalidates the
[48:23]fast for no reason that one there's a kafar of three things
[48:29]I just point I just put one in the in the either
[48:33]you fast for two consecutive months or you feed 60 people or
[48:42]you free a slave we don't have slaves now in the past
[48:45]this was one of the ways that Islam encouraged people to free
[48:50]slaves there were slaves back then if you broke a day of
[48:53]fasting purposefully you would have to go and buy a slave and
[48:57]and free that slave this was one if you don't have slaves
[48:59]then you then you um fast for 2 months you can't fast
[49:06]for two months you feed 60 people feed 60 poor people and
[49:09]you have to make up that day that you missed next slide
[49:13]please okay who for who is fasting not waj upon who is
[49:20]fasting not W obligatory upon fasting is not obligatory upon people of
[49:26]old age or people whose fasting causes excessive uh difficulty instead they
[49:33]can give fidya one mud of food to a poor person so
[49:37]who is the old age the old age is the person who
[49:41]is truly old that fasting is going to harm them yes no
[49:48]if they feel like if they feel like they're able to fast
[49:53]then they could continue fasting unless the doctor tells them you can't
[49:57]or sometimes there's an you know old old person that you know
[50:00]they know like they start shivering out of hunger out of then
[50:03]fasting is not W on them yes it's probably not Haram on
[50:10]them because everyone knows themselves but yes if they end up for
[50:15]example being dehydrated or hurting themselves then yes it becomes Haram um
[50:20]those who have an illness which makes them feel excessive thirst so
[50:26]this is abnormal situation we're not talking about people that get thirsty
[50:31]they call it people that are they they have to drink water
[50:35]or else they they really will suffer um this is a if
[50:42]someone did not fast due to old age and is able to
[50:43]fast the following month maybe they were sick for a while they
[50:47]should make it up based on recommended precaution so when I feel
[50:50]better I make it up if I didn't feel better then I
[50:54]don't make it up fasting is not obligatory on a pregnant woman
[50:57]approaching the time of delivery if it is harmful for her or
[51:04]for The Unborn Child So if she came close in her last
[51:06]trimester she's close to uh delivery then um she should not it's
[51:14]not obligatory upon her she just makes it up later so there's
[51:16]an insistence in the Hadith that says in the in the end
[51:23]of the pregnancy not in the beginning yes then then she would
[51:28]not fast because she got sick yeah if she if it if
[51:33]it affects her if it affects her in a negative way then
[51:35]she would not fast but this one we're talking about she's about
[51:40]to give she's 10 days away from giving birth she's not getting
[51:43]sick but maybe at this time the child needs the nutrition so
[51:49]fasting is not waj upon her at that time if she feels
[51:51]like she's able to and there's nothing wrong with it then she
[51:54]could continue fasting um such a woman must give one mud mud
[51:59]means 3/4 of a kilo of food to a poor person poor
[52:03]person for each missed fast and she must make up the fast
[52:08]she did not keep breastfeeding woman can make up the fast later
[52:11]if breastfeeding is the only means of feeding the child based on
[52:15]obligatory precaution so she she knows that if she fast the milk
[52:23]is going to decrease the milk supply is going to decrease and
[52:25]this is going to harm the child and the child child does
[52:26]not have any other any other form of um feeding any other
[52:34]valid form of feeding for example maybe there's there is um formula
[52:38]but she doesn't believe formula is healthy for her child and she's
[52:44]not required to give formula but if if um if she often
[52:46]times she gives formula to the child then she can't now she
[52:52]can't come and say oh I'm breastfeeding because you you've already given
[52:54]formula to the child but if you're of of the belief that
[52:56]I've never put formula in my child's mouth and I only want
[53:01]to give my child from my milk then in this case you
[53:03]you stick with that but if you're giving one day formula and
[53:07]one day this then you you continue fasting yes okay so next
[53:14]slide please there are recommended fasts so we know during the month
[53:18]of Ramadan it's waj but there's other times that are recommended any
[53:23]day out of the year except the Forbidden days what are the
[53:26]Forbidden days of fasting day ofid what are the two days ofid
[53:32]that are and how many eids do we have four what are
[53:40]the four days ofid let the sisters give them a chance what
[53:43]are the four days of and and what is the fourth one
[53:54]no J Friday every Friday is a so these are considered the
[54:04]four but only two of them it's to fast it's Haram to
[54:09]fast on those days so what are the recommended days of fasting
[54:14]the first and the last Thursday of each month and the first
[54:21]Wednesday after the 10th of the month these are recommended days the
[54:24]13th 14th and 15th of each month we're not talking about September
[54:27]October November we're talking about the lunar month and those days they're
[54:32]called the days of when the Hal when the Crescent is at
[54:37]its biggest the thir the eve of the 13th the eve of
[54:42]the 14th and the eve of the 15th of each month the
[54:44]entire months of rajab and shaan the fourth to the 9th of
[54:50]shaal so after Eid after Eid you have the fourth to the
[54:53]ninth it's recommended to fast meaning three days after Eid the day
[54:56]ofid and second and third there's no fasting from the fourth to
[55:01]the ninth it becomes recommended um and the philosophy behind this is
[55:05]to make up any Mis fast that you have you make it
[55:09]up right away um the first nine days of including the day
[55:12]ofat which is the ninth of of the day of 18th of
[55:18]the the day of the prophet's birth 17th of RAB when is
[55:22]that when is the 17th of RAB that's going to be Saturday
[55:32]Saturday it's must to fast the birth of the Prophet the 17th
[55:34]of is the day of the birth of the Prophet The Day
[55:38]of the the 27th of R okay if someone keeps a recommended
[55:43]fast it is not obligatory on this person to complete it in
[55:47]fact if a fellow believer invites him to eat it is recommended
[55:50]for him to accept the invitation and to break his fast during
[55:54]the day even if it's after so say for example Saturday is
[56:03]the birth of the Prophet 17th we all that day we all
[56:05]wake up and we make the intention that we're fasting okay then
[56:12]half the day goes and then at noon time you see your
[56:15]mother she's made you a dish a very delicious dish and she
[56:20]comes and she tells you come and join and eat with me
[56:23]I'm inviting you to eat with me here you go and you
[56:28]eat with your mother you get the theab of making your mother
[56:33]happy and you get the theab of fasting but she has to
[56:34]invite you not you go and you tell her you invite me
[56:38]and if she does not invite you then tough luck that day
[56:40]that day you continue the fast so this is this is only
[56:46]for recommended fast and only for fast that you are not making
[56:52]up so say I'm making up fast and I I I missed
[56:53]10 days last year and I'm on the 2 third of of
[56:57]shaan I'm on the 20th of shaan meaning the next 10 days
[57:02]I have to fast all of them because if I don't it's
[57:05]going to go to the it's going to roll over to the
[57:06]next year those they're not excused but say it's the beginning of
[57:10]shaan I could make up the next day I could make up
[57:12]another day then here in this case I could accept an invite
[57:22]yes a m when we say m we mean a person who
[57:29]has accepted the full message the way it came no pick no
[57:35]um Buffet Muslims you you you take everything you don't pick and
[57:39]choose what you want so that's what m that's the definition of
[57:43]a m yes no no they could just say I'm inviting you
[57:50]to eat come and eat with me that's it if this is
[57:54]a m because see how much theab is how much reward to
[57:59]make a m happy because they invited me they're a Believer and
[58:02]I'm making them happy by answering their invite Allah will give me
[58:06]the theab of fasting and give me the theab the reward of
[58:10]making the M happy yes they have to open your mouth and
[58:19]put it in your mouth no yeah they're inviting you they're telling
[58:24]you I'm inviting you to eat must fast if it's what can
[58:31]someone come and your your non-muslim friend tells you hey eat this
[58:36]burger with me I said if you're making up and you don't
[58:39]have enough days left say for example but if you're making up
[58:46]if it's after time it's better to just continue um if if
[58:52]you're making up once time comes you have to continue yes after
