[9:10]merciful we ask Allah again to send his greatest peace and blessings
[9:13]upon Muhammad Muhammad we praise Allah for all the blessings he has
[9:22]given us and the greatest blessing being that he allowed us to
[9:25]be of the ones who remain steadfast dedicated and loyal on the
[9:28]path of our master after the prophet the commander of the faithful
[9:32]the prince of the Believers the protector of the prophet and his
[9:36]message praise Allah for this blessing and every blessing for without Allah
[9:43]we would have nothing Salam alaykum my dear respected Brothers my dear
[9:46]respected sisters firstly uh thank you for inviting me and and having
[9:55]me join you all uh at this relatively new community center uh
[9:59]here at Mecca it's a pleasure to be here uh though uh
[10:06]I I definitely believe this Center is so necessary and mallah is
[10:10]continuing to to grow uh people may C feel like it's so
[10:15]far away when it's really not it's just down the road but
[10:18]mashallah our community uh continues to grow and Thrive and I think
[10:22]having a center like this um that is closer to home for
[10:26]all of our families that are living in this area is so
[10:28]essential so and masallah it's been a few how many years has
[10:32]it been since Mecca has been established two less than three years
[10:36]mallah and already mallah a a new property coming about and the
[10:42]growth continues and continues so I start off by uh thanking you
[10:46]all uh everyone here for allowing me to join you all and
[10:49]contribute to these programs that I believe will continue to bring life
[10:57]to our presence here as a community right this memory of the
[11:04]holy prophet this is what brings us life the sixth holy IM
[11:09]it's narrated that he said may Allah have mercy on those who
[11:16]bring life to our cause that's what he says after he commands
[11:23]his followers bring life to our cause may Allah have mercy on
[11:27]those who bring life to our cause and that's what everyone here
[11:32]is doing it's not just on a speaker a scholar a presenter
[11:35]to come and deliver it's on the attendees those who are listening
[11:39]it is all of us together that make this growth of our
[11:46]community actually take place so as important as it is for a
[11:49]Podium to be here and a stage to be here and a
[11:53]member to be here and for people to speak and and recite
[11:56]for um it's so so important important the positions that you are
[12:03]all in the eagerness this wanting to seek wanting to learn wanting
[12:07]to educate oneself wanting to grow wanting to develop that is so
[12:12]important and necessary and I'm going to use this as a platform
[12:17]for the or starting point for the topic of tonight in in
[12:20]honor of our holy prophet Muhammad s Al Al who we just
[12:25]a few days ago were commemorating uh his his death and now
[12:29]going into the days in a couple weeks where we're going to
[12:33]be celebrating his birth this time we see this as a time
[12:36]for us to renew our relationship with the holy prophet as followers
[12:41]of sh Muslims there's a great deal of emphasis on and rightfully
[12:48]so we need to have an emphasis on B and the reason
[12:53]why we do is because the prophet emphasize anytime we see why
[12:57]are we emphasizing IM Ali IM Hassan IM Hussein lady zah all
[13:01]of the IMs why is this great emphasis on them theologically philosophically
[13:06]why it's because it was the emphasis of the Prophet what we
[13:11]need to make sure that we do though is this relationship that
[13:13]we have in our Creed our our theology it's something that we
[13:18]remind ourselves the relationship with starts first and formost with the father
[13:25]of ah bit the king of ah bit the master of a
[13:29]being the holy prophet himself is a pointer it's the household the
[13:36]family but of whom Muhammad when we say Al Muhammad the family
[13:43]of Muhammad you don't have the AL you don't have without Muhammad
[13:49]so tonight from this point I want to talk about yes the
[13:55]law of Education some of the maxims some of the principles that
[13:58]we have when we're looking at what does it mean to be
[14:00]someone who is educated seeking an education seeking knowledge practically what does
[14:06]that look like in your life right but I also want to
[14:10]delve a little bit deeper into our relationship as followers of as
[14:15]proud Shia Muslims we have this honor and pride of being followers
[14:20]those who are admirers and Loyalists to IM aliam but what did
[14:29]IM aliam emphasized with he emphasized his servitude to and if for
[14:37]a person who's going to be a follower of a person who's
[14:41]going to be an admirer and a loyalist of there needs to
[14:45]be this emphasis on whom it's beautiful that when you see all
[14:51]of the Praises of the commander of the faithful all of the
[14:57]Praises that he has in fact the prophet himself would Praise Him
[15:00]and when he was compared not the prophet Ali compared to the
[15:07]prophets before muham before him his virtues it said would be even
[15:15]greater than the prophets before Muhammad like Adam and n and ibraim
[15:23]and M and Isa and the people would ask Ali are you
[15:25]better than them he would explain the prophet would tell me my
[15:28]virtues are greater than Adam then no then ibraim then M and
[15:34]Isa and he would explain how each one of them from the
[15:37]first to the last before Muhammad and how Ali's virtues were even
[15:43]greater but when they asked him yah Ali how do you compare
[15:52]with Prophet Muhammad s alai listen closely to this how do you
[15:55]compare to Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaih IM would respond woe unto you
[16:10]for even asking that question I am merely a servant from the
[16:14]Servants of muhamad s alai so you and I as followers when
[16:20]people may ask or we ask ourselves what is this relationship we
[16:24]have with are we exaggerating when it comes to B no because
[16:28]when we were looking at we're looking back at the prophet what
[16:31]did the prophet tell us about and know that even if when
[16:36]we're looking and we're trying to see what is this great virtue
[16:39]that Ali has Ali himself would tell us there is no one
[16:48]like Muhammad so being a follower of you are pointed to what
[16:54]this is essential as the holy prophet when IMI saying I am
[17:00]I a servant from the Servants of Muhammad it shows you the
[17:08]great status of it shows you this great status of the Seal
[17:10]of prophets now what did he tell us we want to build
[17:16]a relationship with him we want to get closer to him what
[17:21]did he tell us about seeking an education seeking knowledge it's narrated
[17:25]that the prophet said seek knowledge from the Cradle to the Grave
[17:35]now this establish establishes for us lifelong learning any Educators in the
[17:42]room any Educators Educators Qui show of hands mashallah any students in
[17:47]the room any students excellent we're all students lifelong students right this
[17:54]idea of seeking an education it's not just a secondary education High
[18:00]School College University training for for us to get a career get
[18:06]a job be a professional etc etc even though those are all
[18:09]great things those are all great things for you to advance yourself
[18:14]in society is something that and even our Scholars of today our
[18:19]emphasize to the followers of listen if you're going to be working
[18:25]in a society be the best in that Society if you're GNA
[18:27]take on a profession be the best in that profession if you're
[18:32]going to be an engineer a doctor a nurse an artist whatever
[18:35]it may be be the best in your field that's actually the
[18:41]advice and the wisdom of our Scholars of today they emphasize this
[18:45]with us now we shouldn't sell ourselves short though in thinking that
[18:52]our education and our knowledge seeking stops at a degree no matter
[18:58]how many degrees that you have it doesn't stop at the degree
[19:02]it continues and it doesn't stop in the classroom or in the
[19:04]mosque or in the center it continues in every aspect of Our
[19:11]Lives this seeking from the Cradle to the Grave the prophet is
[19:14]telling us listen in every single situation in every moment of your
[19:24]life seek try to grow try to learn no matter how old
[19:27]we may become I realize when I got my first degree I
[19:34]couldn't wait until I could finish my second degree when I was
[19:36]in my education I was like man I just want to finish
[19:40]but after I finished I was like man there's so much more
[19:43]to learn there's so much more to educate myself in and I
[19:50]found myself wanting to learn wanting to read wanting to educate myself
[19:54]both in my profession and in my faith and when you go
[19:57]and you actually learn right how many of us and be honest
[20:03]you can be vulnerable a little bit right not too vulnerable just
[20:05]a little bit right I I've been sharing a little about myself
[20:07]how many of you are currently let's say high school students high
[20:16]school students college students University students okay how many of you be
[20:22]honest you can't wait to be done it was all of them
[20:25]that was all of them all right some of them didn't even
[20:26]raise their hand the first time I'm not even in school and
[20:28]I can't wait to be done right I want you tonight to
[20:35]take a little bit try a little bit of a different perspective
[20:39]on your education yes even in the high school setting even in
[20:43]the college setting in the University setting I want you instead of
[20:48]looking at it as man I can't wait to just finish this
[20:49]obligation this thing that I have to do I want to finish
[20:54]it and let's say the high school student I want to go
[20:58]on to college I want to go on to University right or
[20:59]I want to go on and open up my business I want
[21:02]to go on and get my job I want to I want
[21:06]to start my life in that sense instead of looking for that
[21:08]next phase that next stage I want you to embrace what you
[21:13]have right now because you're never going to get it again what
[21:18]you have right now in high school your experience right now you're
[21:21]16 you're 17 you're 18 years old you're 19 you're 20 you're
[21:25]21 years old however old you are you're never going to get
[21:27]this time as it is right now ever again so instead of
[21:33]trying to live for that next moment into the future I can't
[21:40]wait until I'm done experience it learn from it delve yourself as
[21:46]much as possible alhamdulillah many of us are so blessed because our
[21:53]parents our grandparents sacrificed in order for us to come here to
[21:58]this country to this community who here just from scanning the audience
[22:03]is yourself or your family is originally from Lebanon Iraq Pakistan Anya
[22:17]mashallah anyone else that I missed India Iran you have any Iranians
[22:25]in the room mashallah mashallah very diverse I mean not that diverse
[22:31]but it's okay you're pretty diverse M diverse for Dearborn right mallah
[22:34]excellent did I miss anybody okay I think we we got it
[22:40]if not you know yeah let me afterwards uh right before D
[22:43]commit right and then we'll seek forgiveness inshallah okay all of our
[22:47]experiences I will tell you as diverse as that is Lebanon Iraq
[22:53]Iran uh Community India Pakistan right as diverse as that may be
[22:58]I will tell you there's so much in common there was leaving
[23:01]a situation leaving a place where perhaps it was not as comfortable
[23:06]whether it was because of war was it because of the economy
[23:11]because of a political situation and economic situation that you as an
[23:16]individual you as a family your parents your grandparents came to this
[23:21]country to a better situation I'll give you a little bit of
[23:25]my history my grandparents came to the United States of America specifically
[23:30]Dearborn Michigan in the late 70s leaving Lebanon Beirut during the Civil
[23:36]War anybody can relate to that experience family mallah okay whether it's
[23:42]your parents your grandparents maybe even your great- grandp whoever it may
[23:45]be right there are some communities that even came much earlier depending
[23:48]on what was going on at that time and what's the context
[23:52]when my grandparents came and I'll specifically talk about my maternal grandfather
[23:57]Haj Hass Assad baz when he decided to come I asked my
[24:05]grandmother why did my grandfather judu why did he come to Dearborn
[24:08]why did he choose Michigan specifically was there anywhere else that he
[24:12]was considering and I've shared the story before on the podium and
[24:17]my grandmother may Allah prolong her life and may Allah bless the
[24:20]soul of my grandfather who passed away about 20 years ago now
[24:27]she told me she said yes your grandfather came to Dearborn choosing
[24:35]between that and New York I was like oh New York we
[24:39]could have been in New York New York's not that great anybody
[24:43]listening from New York I still love you but I mean yay
[24:48]Michigan she she told me he chose Michigan over New York I
[24:55]asked her why was it because of Ford mortar company was it
[24:58]because of was it because of the big three what was it
[25:03]was it Automotive she said definitely there were some opportunities but there
[25:08]were also opportunities in New York and a lot of by the
[25:11]way there's a a very large community in New York mashallah in
[25:16]the New York New Jersey area I was actually just visiting last
[25:20]month mashallah beautiful Community thriving Community old Community or older community she
[25:25]said no it wasn't just that it wasn't the job opportunity unities
[25:30]we left your grandfather had a concern when we leave Lebanon will
[25:41]my children hold on to their faith now I'll tell you my
[25:46]grandfather was not a Sheikh was not the most religious man but
[25:51]he had a concern about religious identity and Faith he didn't want
[25:58]to move across the Atlantic ocean and for his kids to lose
[26:02]their faith so he asked about what exists in Michigan and they
[26:05]heard about a community that was growing in the Detroit area the
[26:11]Islamic Center of America with and he made a decision not having
[26:16]met the man not having seen the man not having seen the
[26:22]the idea of holding on to one's identity and going and moving
[26:32]there I tell you today like many of you I benefit tremendously
[26:35]and I'm eternally in debt to my grandfather for the decision that
[26:40]he made in coming to this community because my faith as his
[26:47]grandson who was yet to come into existence was affected by that
[26:55]decision he was looking at his kids it impacted his grandkids and
[27:00]and his great-grandkids my children go to school where the Maya School
[27:04]the Islamic Center of America now we have many Islamic schools we
[27:09]have many centers across our community mashallah this is a growing and
[27:12]thriving one it's not about any one's center it's not about anyone's
[27:15]school it's about this commitment to what to one's Faith commitment to
[27:23]one's what identity commitment to one's what lifelong learning and education because
[27:27]if you're not committed to your faith your identity and your education
[27:31]you may just be like I'll go wherever I can get a
[27:33]buck right wherever I can make money but holding on to that
[27:40]your decision now can have a tremendous impact you may not be
[27:43]thinking about you're like I'm in high school I'm in college I'm
[27:45]a university I'm working my job I'm just I'm just trying to
[27:51]get by right but your decisions now have a huge impact on
[27:53]your children on your grandchildren and even your great-grandchildren all right so
[28:00]know that yes sitting here today being here today man you're doing
[28:03]some good work so God bless you for that when I'm looking
[28:08]at this I'm seeing my relationship to within this context you see
[28:15]it your relationship to is within the context of your experience you
[28:20]can delve deeper into it or you can move away from it
[28:24]the prophet is going to stay he's always going to be there
[28:26]right ultimately Allah waala is going to be there for you what
[28:32]does Allah tells tell us in the Holy Quran call on me
[28:40]I will answer you if you thank me I will give you
[28:43]more what is this what is this relationship that we're talking about
[28:46]what is it's coming down to how are you moving interacting engaging
[28:53]with the constant Allah T is constant the immaculate ones that he's
[28:59]tasked with the message and protecting the message his his the prophet
[29:05]the IM they're constant but you and I what are we doing
[29:08]to engage with it so when the prophet is telling me engage
[29:14]in lifelong learning me from the Cradle to the Grave it's a
[29:20]mindset you know what the prophet said I mentioned how our grandparents
[29:26]and our parents maybe our families have gone from Lebanon Iraq India
[29:32]Pakistan East Africa all these different places in the world Iran all
[29:36]these different places in the world to come thousands of miles away
[29:39]to get a better life even at the time of the prophet
[29:46]he emphasized to his followers seek knowledge even if you have to
[29:56]go all the way to China now China as far in general
[30:01]now imagine back then no planes no fast Vehicles fastest thing was
[30:06]a horse an Arabian horse fastest thing anybody know how fast an
[30:11]Arabian horse goes H 45 miles per hour right we're we're driving
[30:18]down Cherry Hill 45 miles per hour and I'm like man can
[30:22]I add another 40 to it right too slow China the prophet
[30:27]is saying you you got to seek you got to go even
[30:32]if you have to all the way to China now someone may
[30:34]be saying okay are you telling me I need to get a
[30:37]p PhD are you telling me I need to go back to
[30:40]school are you telling me I need a new certificate are you
[30:45]telling me are you telling me no not necessarily I'm not telling
[30:47]you any of these things what I am telling you is any
[30:52]moment that you have an opportunity to learn which is every single
[30:56]moment take it let's say for a example right now how long
[31:02]have I been up here anyone keeping track of time I've been
[31:05]up here for 20 minutes okay thank you has watching it he's
[31:11]like got D let's go been up here for 20 minutes the
[31:18]prophet Sall it's narrated that he said an hour of reflection is
[31:24]worth 70 years of worship one hour of reflection 70 years of
[31:29]worship let's divide 70 into three if you've been reflecting for the
[31:35]past 20 minutes actively listening thinking about what I'm saying reflecting on
[31:40]it what's 70 divided by three 23.3 so if the past 20
[31:48]minutes according to what the prophet is saying one hour of reflection
[31:51]is worth 70 years of worship you've just gotten yourself a quarter
[31:56]Century worth of of worship listen with Allah subhana wa tal it's
[32:01]very easy it's very easy don't let anybody trick you into thinking
[32:10]that being a good Muslim being a practicing Muslim is actually hard
[32:15]it's not repenting to Allah subhana wa tala is not hard it's
[32:21]not why it's very simple Allah subhana wa ta'ala provides us opportunity
[32:27]after opportunity and gives us these huge measures telling you listen just
[32:35]for one hour I want you to just like like think well
[32:41]reflect well just just an hour and I'm G to give you
[32:45]a lifetime 70 years I'm going to give you a lifetime of
[32:51]worship who here was prayed right before the program started prayed Jam
[32:58]who here did this God bless you Canton all right that it's
[33:07]narrated from he said the one who takes on the glorification of
[33:11]our mother fa because is attributed to who it was a gift
[33:16]from to whom lady fa right this how many times 34 times
[33:25]alhamdulillah how many times 33 times Subhan Allah how many times 33
[33:30]good math all right educated all right you do that immediately after
[33:34]you finish your prayer IM it's narrated that he said before you
[33:41]turn left or right all of your sins are forgiven if you
[33:43]were doing this knowing the status of whom the individual that this
[33:49]was gifted in the name of Lady fa you mean to tell
[33:53]me if I just simply do this which takes not even like
[33:59]two minutes maybe even not even 90 seconds you're telling me if
[34:02]I do this all of my sins are going to be wiped
[34:06]yes how it's too easy with Allah it's too easy Allah subhana
[34:13]wa ta'ala through his Prophet Muhammad many of us don't realize we
[34:23]say it we say yes Muhammad the Mercy to Mankind Allah describes
[34:30]him when he's giving you a gift in the name of his
[34:33]daughter FAA he's giving her the gift and then extending it to
[34:37]all of the Muslims take this use this know the status of
[34:40]my daughter Fatima know that Allah subhana wa tala is happy when
[34:42]she's happy is angered by what angers her this connection to the
[34:48]connection to the connection to allaha we just came after two months
[34:53]morning IM Hussein all of these things connect giving us opportunity after
[34:59]opportunity after opportunity when the prophet would hold and say Hest you
[35:07]just reminded me of this tradition just by holding is that your
[35:12]son how old is heus was held by at a similar Age
[35:24]5 years old the prophet would hold him in his arms in
[35:27]Gatherings like this with his companions with his followers and describe to
[35:31]them not his mere love oh I'm a grandfather I love my
[35:36]grandchildren because the love of comes from the Divine it's the Divine
[35:42]love so when is expressing his love for Hussein and then telling
[35:50]you how do you connect with this Divine love another opportunity you
[36:02]want God to love you you want to feel the Divine love
[36:05]divine grace divine mercy and compassion I am the Mercy to Mankind
[36:14]I am man we are so honored our Prophet Muhammad s Al
[36:17]is who the Beloved of God the Beloved and I'm telling you
[36:24]Allah loves those who love him opportunity after opportunity whether it be
[36:29]a simple glorification this that you have to wipe away all of
[36:32]your sins whether it be this hour of reflection this one hour
[36:39]just reflect think have that pause or building a relationship with IM
[36:44]Hussein and remembering him now about that pause mallah I feel the
[36:52]energy in the room it's a good energy it's a calm energy
[36:55]one of the law students that I that I teach actually earlier
[37:01]today um Thursdays I teach basically all day from morning from morning
[37:04]toight between the two law schools that I teach at and one
[37:06]of the one of the students asked me because I mentioned within
[37:11]Muslim piy I teach Islamic law but I mention often what exists
[37:15]within Muslim piety right Muslim practice and I mentioned this idea of
[37:21]reflection and pause and the student asked me well how do Muslims
[37:27]have pause like what do they do for pause and what do
[37:30]what do Muslim attorneys do because all of these people right these
[37:35]jur doctor candidates they're candidates to become attorneys right what do what
[37:39]do what do Muslim attorneys do to have pause I don't like
[37:43]any other Muslim whatever they would do and that is prescribed to
[37:46]them well what's prescribed to them told them their prayer it's the
[37:50]best pause look at with us alhamdulillah honestly with all of the
[37:55]challenges of the day all of the challenges of the day you
[37:58]see that whether it be the maxims the principles that are shared
[38:04]with us from and the prophet to the prescribed framework that we
[38:07]have in our prayers it's not complicated it's very simple you adhere
[38:10]to this you're going to live a fulfilling life you're going to
[38:17]live a successful meaningful life just stop and pray so many of
[38:20]us are too busy too much action too much movement I'm too
[38:26]busy I can't stop and pray oh man if you just stopped
[38:28]just for a few minutes and reset yourself what it would do
[38:34]for the rest of your day I tell you it's those moments
[38:37]just in the middle of the day stopping praying sounds simple do
[38:42]it our religion was never meant to be complicated our faith was
[38:51]never meant to be something for people hard to understand to the
[38:57]contrary it was meant to be simplified so that any person can
[39:01]hold on to this relationship of Muhammad his family connect them to
[39:08]Allah subhana wa tala recite to Allah pray to Allah connect with
[39:11]him at any point in time now on that note my dear
[39:16]brothers and sisters let us go into Dua into this recitation the
[39:24]supplication that was taught by whom who who authored Dua K any
[39:30]idea who IM aliam but who's k then who His companion so
[39:39]he taught this to Kum does anybody know when he taught it
[39:43]to Kum n which part of the im's life was this taught
[39:51]to Kum which part of his life was it in was it
[39:57]when the Imam was 30 was it when the Imam was 40
[40:01]50 was it when he was living in Medina was it when
[40:05]he was in kufa was he the Khalifa at the time was
[40:11]he not how about this this is going to be some homework
[40:13]for you all right mallah Canon I'm throwing so many things at
[40:17]you guys and you guys are all answering them I gotta I
[40:18]got to make it a little bit difficult some homework for you
[40:22]all as you inshallah recite Dua K do a little bit of
[40:24]research and see when was Dua K taught and maybe a a
[40:29]little bit more into who is K yes he's a companion of
[40:32]IM aliam beautiful but a little bit more about his life who's
[40:36]kallah we remember Kum just by his name every single Thursday when
[40:41]we're reciting Dua Kum right when you're approaching this Dua Beyond this
[40:45]little homework assignment that we have right that inshallah we're going to
[40:48]be delving a little bit deeper into the connection with Imam Ali
[40:51]and His companion when you go into this Dua I want you
[40:56]to continue knew this cuz we didn't reach a full hour now
[41:02]we're at half hour right we're half hour right HJ half hour
[41:05]we do it quickly here right so the extension is going to
[41:10]continue to what because I want I want to make sure everybody's
[41:12]going to get 70 years of worship tonight we were mentioning and
[41:17]we're remembering this this Hadith from him that an hour of reflection
[41:20]is worth 70 years of worship so your reflection is going to
[41:24]continue into Dua when the Quran is recited or the Dua is
[41:31]recited for those of us who don't understand the Arabic or your
[41:37]the Arabic is a second language maybe you understand it maybe you
[41:42]need some help right as strong as my Arabic may be I
[41:45]know my English is stronger and at times I need a consultant
[41:50]and this is this is speaking um as somebody who I've translated
[41:53]books from Arabic to English but English is my primary language I
[41:57]know I know that where I may need to consult an English
[42:02]translation to better understand the meaning of something right there's no shame
[42:06]in that what I would ask all of you to do is
[42:11]when you're reciting the Dua when Quran is being recited read along
[42:16]look at the meanings reflect on the meanings it could be one
[42:23]line from Dua that changes the trajectory of your life it could
[42:26]be one line could be one phrase as the IM is talking
[42:32]to Allah subhana tala teaching K how to speak to Allah listen
[42:36]all of these all of these supplications all of these prayers are
[42:41]the prophet and the imams teaching their Companions and Us by extension
[42:45]how to speak to Allah how to ask Allah how to request
[42:53]from Allah subhana tala life is very short don't prohibit yourself forbid
[42:58]yourself prevent yourself from the fruit of reflecting on the meanings of
[43:04]the Dua of the I end with [Music] this and for all
[43:20]of our benefit my dear brothers and sisters especially for those who
