[1:01]to accelerate the reappearance of our awaited imam i request we recite
[1:07]three salawat to the loudest of our voices respect to scholars brothers
[1:11]and sisters in islam the city of antioch is considered one of
[1:19]the most ancient syrian cities it was founded near the end of
[1:23]the fourth century bc by one of the generals of alexander the
[1:27]great and during its time it was considered one of the three
[1:31]largest roman cities in terms of trading knowledge and wealth antioch was
[1:37]considered also a chief center of early christianity due to the fact
[1:41]that it had a large population of jewish origin and so it
[1:45]attracted the early missionaries such as paul barnabas and peter during paul's
[1:51]first missionary its converts were the first to be called christian it
[1:57]was conquered during the reign of the second khalifa umar ibn khattab
[2:00]by the companion abu ubaid al jarrah and its people agreed to
[2:05]pay the taxes in return of keeping their religion when the french
[2:10]conquered syria in world war world war i before they left they
[2:15]made it into a turkish city antioch to the christians is like
[2:20]al madin al munawara to the muslims that the christians consider it
[2:24]the second most important city after jerusalem and the reason i gave
[2:29]a brief historical background about the city is that because this very
[2:32]city is mentioned in the holy quran in surat yaseen allah tells
[2:38]us about the story of the inhabitants of the town he says
[2:48]and cite to them the example of the inhabitants of the town
[2:51]when we sent to them the apostles when the apostles came to
[2:54]them then we sent to them two apostles they denounced them so
[3:04]we reinforced them with a third they said that we have indeed
[3:10]been sent to you and you would notice that after this the
[3:14]verses tell us about a man that came rushing to the city
[3:18]simply to support in support of the apostles so what we're gonna
[3:22]do tonight inshallah we're gonna further discuss this topic depending on the
[3:26]following points is that number one what was the dialogue that occurred
[3:31]between the apostles and the inhabitants of the city of antioch number
[3:37]two who was that man and why did he come rushing to
[3:41]the city number three what was the level of his reward number
[3:45]four what is the difference between a salah and a muslim number
[3:50]five was there a man in the ummah of muhammad compared to
[3:54]that very same man and before we proceed i ask you to
[3:58]provide me with allah inshallah as we mentioned earlier that allah mentions
[4:03]to us the story of the city of antioch he said that
[4:07]we sent them two apostles so first he sent them two apostles
[4:10]those were the messengers from the majority of the scholars agreed that
[4:16]wanted to guide the people of antioch yes simply for a reason
[4:20]that antioch had a large population of jewish origin as we said
[4:24]earlier and so it was a a base for christianity to be
[4:30]spread as a new religion as a new faith so what happened
[4:33]is that that nabi sent to them both apostles they denounced them
[4:37]they didn't believe in them and then after this he sent to
[4:39]them a third one and what happened is that the holy quran
[4:42]focuses on the dialogue that occurred between the apostles and the people
[4:47]of antioch and i would like to make a point here it
[4:49]is important to understand that if you notice in the holy quran
[4:53]that when every time allah mentions a story or narrative allah tends
[4:58]to be general and brief and straight to the point yes simply
[5:02]because of the fact that allah wants us to focus on the
[5:05]moral of the story rather than the details sometimes yet there was
[5:09]an exception to this method in some narratives you find in some
[5:13]narratives in the holy quran allah subhanahu wa ta'ala focuses on even
[5:17]the dialogue that occurred why to draw our attention of the importance
[5:22]that this dialogue is important therefore you would notice for instance allah
[5:26]mentions the dialogue in detail that occurred between nabi musa and faraun
[5:30]in surah al qasas isn't it and then allah focuses on the
[5:34]dialogue that occurred between who nabi ibrahim and an nimrud and so
[5:38]on so when there is a focus on the dialogue that means
[5:41]there's an important lesson to learn to learn from it so let's
[5:44]dwell into this topic more and dissect the dialogue that occurred between
[5:48]the apostles and the society of antioch first thing they told them
[5:52]is what is that as we said earlier is that allah sent
[5:55]to them the apostles the first thing they said that we are
[5:59]indeed have been sent to you that listen to us that we
[6:02]are been sent to you from who from allah and this is
[6:05]struggle of every messenger and apostle and a prophet that the first
[6:08]thing that they do is that they announce the reason of their
[6:11]message meaning what the message that they come with is a message
[6:15]directly from allah it's not from anything else and there is no
[6:19]other motivation behind it except that it's from allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[6:23]and they ask for no reward so they said to them that
[6:25]we come to you from allah in his tafsir makes a beautiful
[6:30]point he says what he separates the replies of the society of
[6:35]antioch into three he says the first one he calls them the
[6:39]three levels of ignorance so let's look more into it what did
[6:43]they say the first thing they said right the first thing they
[6:50]said to the apostles after they had announced their message the first
[6:54]thing they said to them is that you are nothing but humans
[6:57]like us meaning what that you would notice that there was an
[7:00]understanding in the the prior nations before back in the days is
[7:05]that anyone that should preach to them that they should be as
[7:09]holy as an angel isn't it is that many people have this
[7:13]mentality sometimes is that since you're not perfect that you cannot preach
[7:17]to me right and therefore the people back in the days they
[7:19]had this understanding that only angels can be holy they believed in
[7:23]somewhat the ability of angels yes but they did not believe in
[7:27]anything called messengers so many of them they thought that what that
[7:31]since you're not angels then you have no ability to guide us
[7:34]and you might hear and by the way when i mention those
[7:37]narratives it is important that you make the connections between the history
[7:41]and nowadays because sometimes mentality tends to be the same history repeats
[7:46]itself isn't it and sometimes when a society is so into materialism
[7:51]that when the society even though it might be an advanced society
[7:55]yet the quran shows you that sometimes they might be so far
[7:58]away from a divine connection so the first thing they said that
[8:01]you're not angels so you're not perfect yes and you hear this
[8:04]a lot by the way there's a struggle amongst the scholars or
[8:06]even the apostles and even the messengers yes that people would tell
[8:10]them that you know what you're not angels you're just normal human
[8:12]beings so you're not perfect many people nowadays in society they come
[8:16]and tell you that you're not guide me you cannot judge me
[8:18]since you're not perfect right you find many of the youth nowadays
[8:22]the first thing that they said they say is what only god
[8:25]can judge me isn't it is that you'd find that neither ever
[8:30]said that nor any of the messengers of the apostles ever said
[8:33]that yes the only person who said that was tupac shakur it
[8:37]wasn't any of the one in religion right that only they say
[8:39]only god can judge me no imagine i'm driving on the highway
[8:43]right right now and i'm over speeding and then the cop pulls
[8:47]me over and he says i'm giving you a ticket i tell
[8:49]him sorry officer only god can judge me right so you have
[8:52]to understand that there's a system at the end of the day
[8:54]and religion is just like any other system there are jurisprudential laws
[8:58]that when you cross and proceed those jurisprudential laws publicly then expect
[9:02]to be judged right then expect to be criticized and that's a
[9:06]very important reality so some people they come and say that you
[9:09]know what since you're not perfect then you cannot judge me so
[9:12]that was the first level of ignorance the first level of ignorance
[9:15]was what that they are just humans like us and if only
[9:18]human beings reflect on the fact that allah created man and he
[9:24]made the rest of the universe subservient to the to to to
[9:28]man in the hadith al qut qutsee allah says what is that
[9:32]oh son of adam i created this whole universe to be subservient
[9:37]to you and i created you to be subservient to me isn't
[9:40]it imam amir says in a narration yes that do not consider
[9:50]yourself a small atom for this whole universe has been all compiled
[9:54]in that intellect allah created man and he provided them with the
[9:58]level of intellect isn't it and when allah provides you with the
[10:02]level of intellect you might be raised even above angels allah when
[10:05]he created adam what did he do he asked the angels to
[10:08]prostrate before adam didn't he yes so allah created man with the
[10:12]with the faculty of of reasoning and with desire and he created
[10:17]angels with the faculty of reasoning without desire and then he created
[10:21]animals with desire and without the faculty of reasoning the more you
[10:25]use your intellect you will rise above to the point that you
[10:28]become a higher level than the angels themselves and the more you
[10:31]follow your desire only you will decrease and demote yourself to the
[10:36]point that you might become lower than an an animal you might
[10:39]just become a two legged creature in this case isn't it so
[10:42]allah is telling us that he provided provide us with the faculty
[10:45]of reasoning and therefore upon this perspective that it is not only
[10:49]the fact that only angels can guide humanity so that was the
[10:52]first level of ignorance the second level the second reply which is
[10:56]referred to also as a second level of ignorance was the fur
[10:59]they said that that's a really very interesting point in fact what
[11:06]did they tell them indeed we consider you a bad omen meaning
[11:10]what we consider you a bad luck now there isn't a clear
[11:14]narration as to why they said that you are a bad omen
[11:18]but some of the narration suggest that it stopped raining some of
[11:22]them suggested that the farming season was really bad some suggested that
[11:26]the trading season was really bad nevertheless everything that was going wrong
[11:31]in the city of antioch they were blaming it on the apostles
[11:34]that's everything and the reality here is that there's a very interesting
[11:37]reality that's occurring right here is that these people are rejecting a
[11:42]divine revelation from allah yet they are willing to believe in an
[11:47]absent cultural tradition in what is that these people are rejecting ghayb
[11:52]the ghayb that comes from allah right because the messenger said we're
[11:55]from allah they said no you're not you're not you're not angels
[11:58]you're humans so they're rejecting the that they're bringing yet they are
[12:02]willing to believe in the that comes from a cultural perspective it's
[12:06]really funny that sometimes you might be meet people in society that
[12:10]they sit down and the first thing they say i don't believe
[12:12]in faith yes but then they'd be drinking a cup of coffee
[12:15]they they flip over the cup of coffee and then they say
[12:18]you know what i wanna read the cup interesting well so you
[12:21]don't believe in the of allah yet you believe in the of
[12:24]cup reading right many people that don't believe in faith they end
[12:28]up call going to fortune tellers isn't it that they go to
[12:31]fortune tellers or they go to palm readers so you're not willing
[12:34]to believe in the of allah but you're willing to believe in
[12:37]the someone that's gonna read your palm or gonna tell you a
[12:41]fortune right on the other hand you're also my people that they
[12:44]blame everything that goes wrong in their life just like those people
[12:47]of antiob they blame everything that goes on wrong in their life
[12:50]on who on what on either or right it's really interesting find
[12:57]some people sometimes they believe in the sense of to the utmost
[13:01]level now yes they both do exist but not to the point
[13:04]that you blame everything on them first reflect on your life what
[13:07]are you doing are you taking the right steps in your life
[13:09]why many people say you know what this is ayin this is
[13:12]sehr right then i'm sure there's a spell on me reminds me
[13:16]not too long ago i was speaking to one of the fellow
[13:18]speakers he said maulana he was lecturing in a city and he
[13:22]said i had a group of guys that they came up to
[13:24]me and they sat down with me and they said what maulana
[13:27]we have ayin on us and we want you to help us
[13:29]remove that ayin i said why he said we've been trying and
[13:32]struggling for the past six months to open up a hip hop
[13:35]studio and it's not working right so there's on us yes i
[13:41]wanna open a hip hop so it reminds me of one time
[13:43]remember when i was living in windsor a person came to my
[13:45]teacher and he said molana can you do dua for me tonight
[13:47]he said yeah sure he said i'm crossing the border detroit i
[13:50]said interesting that's nice good is there anything important he said yes
[13:53]i'm going to gamble in the casino and i need your dua
[13:56]i need the support of allah i said to that fellow speaker
[13:59]trust me have a better story for you back in the days
[14:01]when i lived in windsor i used to give weekly lectures a
[14:04]group of guys now to be fair they were very sincere deep
[14:07]inside them very sincere group of guys so one time the topic
[14:11]of the lecture was the concept of that comes from allah depending
[14:15]on allah and the concept of rizq yes now when i finished
[14:18]the lecture one of them came up to me and he said
[14:21]maulana i totally believe in what you said because i have witnessed
[14:24]the concept of rizq person on a personal perspective i said wow
[14:28]what do you mean he said there's an incident that happened with
[14:31]me i traveled to fort mcmurray to look for a job now
[14:34]the job search took a while until i didn't have any more
[14:37]money so i was broke i didn't even have money for dinner
[14:41]and i said okay so what did you do he said i
[14:43]decided to just take a walk around the building while i was
[14:46]walking around the building i stepped on something that made a noise
[14:49]i said okay he said knew that there is something inside there
[14:53]so i opened the bag and it ended up being a bag
[14:56]full of weeds yes i said full of what he said weed
[14:59]marijuana i said and he said and i sold it and i
[15:03]had money for four days yes i totally believe in the concept
[15:07]of rizq maulana i said wonderful if that's the concept of rizq
[15:10]that you believe in i don't know what to say right so
[15:12]some people have this understanding is that they considered them a bad
[15:16]omen whatever what was going wrong in the city they were blaming
[15:19]it on them and as i said it's really astonishing that such
[15:22]people with advanced knowledge and trading and wealth that they believe in
[15:26]this something called bad omen so that was the second level of
[15:28]ignorance the third level of ignorance was what they said to them
[15:36]you see and this is indeed the highest level of ignorance that
[15:39]any society ruled by a tyrant can reach to in what sense
[15:43]they said that then if you shall not quit we shall stone
[15:46]you to death us meaning what is that sometimes it's unfortunate when
[15:51]society doesn't have the thought and the advance in terms of in
[15:56]terms of knowledge and intellect that they would defeat back a theory
[15:59]they confront back a theory with another theory doctor alwah may allah
[16:03]bless his soul would always repeat in his lectures he would say
[16:05]meaning what thoughts can never be defeated except with another thought is
[16:12]that when someone comes to you with a theory if you resort
[16:15]to violence and physical action that means you're empty in terms of
[16:19]thought that's always the feedback theory with another theory is that be
[16:23]be very knowledgeable well rounded in knowledge in order for you to
[16:26]be able to confront another theory and that's why that's what what
[16:30]happened is that what is that they resorted to lenard juman nakon
[16:33]and it's unfortunate is that people that always ask and and basically
[16:38]offer a new theory or a thought in society or ask for
[16:42]their rights they're always being confronted with this yes notice sheikh nammal
[16:46]nammal may allah bless his soul all what batman was asking for
[16:49]is what just e imagine imagine you live in a society that's
[16:53]all what you ask for is equal rights with other citizens is
[16:56]that all what you wanna be considered it's just a normal citizen
[16:59]in a society just like everyone else what happened to sheikh hamar
[17:02]al namr he was accused of going against the king meaning the
[17:06]king is not just and that's what sheikh hamar is accusing for
[17:09]and all what the man did is ask for the rights of
[17:11]his own community and the result of course he was killed unjustly
[17:16]and what happened to the world society of course they were quiet
[17:19]it's that human rights they stop at certain people us advanced societies
[17:24]that claim human rights but unfortunately sometimes no humanity whatsoever is that
[17:29]they the concept of human rights doesn't apply to everyone yes it
[17:32]doesn't apply to the victims of yemen it doesn't apply to the
[17:35]victims in syria and palestine and iraq right it doesn't apply to
[17:39]the victims of the hazara community in kuwait right they don't apply
[17:43]yet why simply why just because there are financial benefits in common
[17:47]right there are financial benefits in common so we're not gonna speak
[17:51]up against those those atrocities isn't it so that's what happened is
[17:54]that going back to the topic these people said you know what
[17:57]we shall stone you to death we shall kill you right and
[18:00]this leads us to our second point and then the quran moves
[18:03]on to tell us the narrative of a man that came rushing
[18:06]to the city the verse that we started says and a man
[18:17]and there came a man from the city outskirts hurrying you see
[18:22]the quran focus on on the details of what's happening in the
[18:25]verse the quran is mentioning the physical state of that man let
[18:31]alone the mental state see the quran is mentioning even the fact
[18:34]how that man came the quran doesn't even mention doesn't only mention
[18:39]that you know what the man just came there's a man who
[18:41]appeared no he said hurrying what does he say right away he
[18:47]announced his message he announced his call he's saying oh people follow
[18:50]the messengers out of passion allah is telling us what he wants
[18:55]us to draw our attention to one very important reality that there's
[18:58]an excitement in the heart of a convert and by the way
[19:02]one thing you need to understand is that when we speak of
[19:04]a convert unfortunately sometimes we think that it's always a person from
[19:08]the west who became muslim no not at all it's that many
[19:12]people sometimes have grown up on certain mentalities and certain understandings yet
[19:17]after a while they advanced in thought and they adopted new mentalities
[19:20]and they even improved their thought they improved their knowledgeable perspective now
[19:26]that's also considered a convert so you're always you're constantly converting you're
[19:31]constantly learning new things right you're constantly understanding new theories you're constantly
[19:36]understanding new perspectives in sciences and religion right and therefore you consider
[19:41]also a convert so that what we need to understand is that
[19:44]there's an excitement in the heart of a convert what does that
[19:47]tell us that tells us that we need to take advantage of
[19:51]this excitement and direct it in the right message because what ends
[19:55]up happening is what is that many people as soon as they
[19:58]adopt many people as soon as they step into religiosity they're very
[20:02]excited right they're motivated yet unfortunately is that our community does not
[20:07]offer enough programs and when you look reflect into our communities is
[20:11]that the majority of the times the programs are basically what we
[20:15]call seasonal programs shahar ramadan and shahar maharam and that's about it
[20:20]see what's happening in between yeah and therefore what's important to understand
[20:24]is that in these two months shahar ramadan and shahar maharam there
[20:28]is presence right there are numbers there's excitement people start wanting to
[20:32]work take advantage of this offer new programs to them places need
[20:37]to be full and by the way i speak this out of
[20:40]hope because i have witnessed the sincerity in this very community there
[20:44]are three factors that distinguish this community from anyone else the first
[20:48]factor is diversity this is wonderful by the way this is how
[20:52]rasulullah formed his government out of diversity it is through sohai barumi
[21:05]and bilal al habashi and salman al farisi that's how society advanced
[21:09]and this is what makes you special is that there's a lot
[21:11]of diversity many nationalities that are present in this hall and this
[21:15]is wonderful the second factor that i would like to mention tonight
[21:18]is the factor of generous organizers and i have witnessed this generosity
[21:24]and this is wonderful i'll tell you why because there are many
[21:27]community centers that have many ideas they have power yet they do
[21:31]not have the financial funding yes allah provided you with generous organizers
[21:36]there are funders too this very very place but please enough food
[21:42]i think that's enough i cannot take any more food i mean
[21:45]it so let's you know i think one more invitation i think
[21:49]i'm going explode so let's be generous in other things i guess
[21:53]you know alhamdulillah so generous organizers that's a very important factor by
[21:57]the way yes the third important factor and i think above all
[22:01]as a godly scholar and i mean what i say alhamdulillah and
[22:07]i say this out of sincerity and i say it as a
[22:10]person who's been in this career for years i have met sheikh
[22:14]ihay symur and i think allah distinguished you as a community with
[22:19]his presence he's a man of knowledge a man of wisdom and
[22:23]a man of taqwa and he is full of knowledge trust me
[22:27]if i were you and if i were if i was living
[22:30]in halifax i would not leave him alone i would bug him
[22:33]day and night because he has a lot to offer and trust
[22:37]me he does he's very well rounded in almul hadith and the
[22:41]quran he's an encyclopedia and other stuff and trust me he's not
[22:44]paying me to say this i'm the one i'm saying this out
[22:47]of sincerity that allah distinguishes with this you have a specialty so
[22:51]take advantage of it let these places be full all the time
[22:56]have programs ongoing programs and no one would ever mind yes so
[23:00]therefore it is important to take advantage of that excitement allah describes
[23:05]that excitement by saying what he was rushing that man was living
[23:11]in the outskirts of the city to show you what that sometimes
[23:15]in an advanced society you find people that live on the outskirts
[23:18]that might have the ability to accept faith more than anyone else
[23:22]yes why because they're connected to the divine more yes they have
[23:26]more time so who was that man that man his name was
[23:30]habib al najar habib al najar is a he was a farmer
[23:33]that lived in the outskirts and what happened is that when the
[23:36]first two apostles came to the city the first one they met
[23:39]was habib ibn najar when they met habib ibn najar they offered
[23:43]him the message of faith so what habib ibn najar said what
[23:47]you what you say makes sense yet i would like a sign
[23:52]i have a sick son at home if you were to cure
[23:54]him then i would consider this a sign so what happened is
[23:58]that they went and they cured his son so he converted and
[24:01]he adopted the faith and therefore when he heard about what's happening
[24:04]with the apostles he felt that the apostles are in danger so
[24:07]he went rushing so imagine allah described his mental state and his
[24:11]physical state what did he say right and then he continued by
[24:18]saying what meaning follow them who do not ask you of any
[24:25]reward yes and indeed they are guided why because the society of
[24:29]antioch was a very materialistic society that materialistic society only understands calculations
[24:37]meaning that there's nothing for free one plus one equals two if
[24:40]you're going to offer me something i'm to have to be paid
[24:43]for it isn't it yet these people the apostles are saying we
[24:46]want nothing in return all what we want is what we just
[24:49]want you to listen to us that's it and then therefore he
[24:53]said follow them who do not ask you for a reward and
[24:56]indeed they are guided and the fact that they are guided is
[24:59]just simply because they're not asking for anything materialistic in return right
[25:02]meaning they are guided they're sincere deep inside their heart they are
[25:06]sincere and this moves us to our third point is that what
[25:10]was the level of his reward the level of his reward was
[25:13]basically as the quran mentioned qilat khul i jannatah either way us
[25:19]meaning that that man attained martyrdom qilat khul i jannatah meaning what
[25:23]and it said it was said to him enter paradise which tells
[25:27]us that the society killed him what did he say while he
[25:31]was dying he says he said oh only i wish if my
[25:35]people would know yes that with what my lord forgave me and
[25:45]he made me of the honored ones and therefore says what he
[25:50]said he was a man who preached to his people even after
[25:54]he died yes and this is a big proof that a martyr
[25:57]sees the jannah al balzagh while he's dying yes and that's habib
[26:01]al najar what happened to him allah raised him to a reward
[26:04]gave him a reward that he made him of the honored ones
[26:08]and this moves us to the fourth point the fourth point we
[26:11]said what is the difference between and the muslim and this is
[26:15]connected directly to our topics as we said is a person who's
[26:20]righteous a is a reformer in order for one to become a
[26:25]reformer what does he need to be he needs to be a
[26:29]righteous to become a you have to be isn't it yes see
[26:34]society is always willing to accept a salih meaning no one in
[26:39]society does not like a good person right everyone in society would
[26:43]refer to a good person they say masha'allah he's good yet as
[26:48]soon as that salih decides to become a muslim what happens as
[26:52]when society retaliates and they say no maybe you should just stay
[26:57]a good person right don't try to spread that righteousness right is
[27:02]that it's unfortunate is that when you are a salih everyone loves
[27:06]you everyone says masha allah yes when you decide to become a
[27:11]muslim what happens to you reminds me of a joke and it
[27:15]said that one time there was a man sitting right beside his
[27:18]wife and he was reading a book about the history of the
[27:20]abbasi dynasty so he was sitting down and pondering and reflecting so
[27:25]his wife told him what is wrong with you what are you
[27:28]thinking of he said well i've realized that the majority of the
[27:33]khalafa of bani abbas they have titles such as al mutawakil al
[27:40]allah al mutadid bilah i said so i was just thinking that
[27:45]if i were to exist in the abbasid during those times and
[27:49]i was abbasid khalifa what would be my title she said one
[27:52]of the two either astaghfirullah or a'udhubillah yes so that's what ends
[27:58]up happening yes is that as soon at the beginning you're righteous
[28:01]you're as soon as you wanna start preaching don't even come near
[28:07]us yes and this is unfortunate what happens to the majority of
[28:10]the messengers is that you reflect on the biography of the messengers
[28:14]and every time you hear about them you always hear that they
[28:17]were righteous people they had a very good reputation as soon as
[28:21]they would start preaching and going public about their message what happens
[28:26]is that people would start confronting them people start fighting them and
[28:30]we gave an example about rasulullah yes what he suffered in the
[28:34]arabian society is that before the dawah he was referred to as
[28:37]asad khul amin after the dawah he was referred to unfortunately as
[28:41]sahir al kadab and this is the reality of society sometimes yes
[28:45]look at what happened with imam amir al muminim everyone sympathized with
[28:53]him when the khilafa was taken away from him yet when he
[28:56]was the only khalifa to be elected in the islamic society that's
[29:00]what happened is the people of the jamal came out and then
[29:03]after the people of the jamal the people of saffin after the
[29:06]people of saffin the people of nahrawan simply why because there was
[29:10]a concept of adala to the government of imam ali there was
[29:15]a concept of justice that he learned from rasulullah it's not do
[29:19]not think that the arabians rejected the message of rasulullah simply because
[29:23]they didn't agree to the divine or to the whole notion of
[29:26]tawheed not only this trust me and it is narrated in history
[29:31]that if rasulullah kept the nobles of quraysh in their positions then
[29:36]trust me they would have accepted the religion of islam they would
[29:38]have accepted the message of islam that's why they accepted muawiyah because
[29:42]he kept them in their positions he brought back that notion of
[29:45]jahiliyah isn't it and that's the same thing that happened with imam
[29:48]amir mumin it is narrated that when imam ali was elected as
[29:52]khalifa that muawiyah sent him a letter right with muwira ibn shaba
[29:58]he's telling him that muawiyah tells you o ali that if you
[30:01]were to keep me in my position the one that the ones
[30:04]before you gave me and kept me in then i shall give
[30:07]you the bayah why because he comes from the perspective of justice
[30:25]not fairness and there's a difference between both is that people might
[30:29]think that fairness and justice are the same no adil is different
[30:33]than musawat people can handle musawat people can handle fairness but people
[30:38]cannot handle adil trust me people cannot handle adil yes people could
[30:42]not handle the adil of ali'ib it's unfortunate oh let me give
[30:46]you a narrative that occurred during the times of imam amir there
[30:51]was a poet by the name of harith al nadi harith al
[30:54]nadi comes from bani nahad his brother was the leader of the
[30:57]tribe of bani nahad his name was tariq bin abdullahi nadi tariq
[31:01]bin abdullahi nadi he took his tribe and he supported imam amir
[31:04]mumin in the battle of saffin against muawiyah he was a very
[31:09]strong ally from kufa in the government of ali ibn abi talal
[31:12]alaihi salam one time al harth al nadi by the way was
[31:16]a poet and he has poetry praising imam ali alaihi salam isn't
[31:20]it on the other hand what happened is that one time al
[31:22]harth al nadi was caught drinking during the month of ramadan publicly
[31:26]he was caught drunk what happened is that imam amir al mu'in
[31:29]alaihi salam brought him and he punished him he applied the islamic
[31:33]limitation on him and then he put him in prison for one
[31:35]night his brother had his brother tariq knew so what happened is
[31:41]that he rushed to imam ali alaihi salam he stepped in and
[31:43]he told him you amir al mu'minin what is it that i
[31:46]heard is it true he said what he said that you punished
[31:48]my brother al harith he said yes i did he said how
[31:52]dare you do this we are your allies i am the leader
[31:55]of the tribe of beninahad and this is my brother and he
[31:58]is a poet that compliments you he said then what if but
[32:01]he is only a man from the muslim society he broke the
[32:04]law hence he had to be punished just like everyone else tariq
[32:08]you know what he said to imam ali alaihi salam he said
[32:10]i swear to god that i shall leave you and go to
[32:12]muawiyah now imagine imam ali alaihi salam was gonna lose a very
[32:16]strong ally a huge tribe that was supporting him on his war
[32:20]war against muawiyah imam ali alaihi salam he said then take your
[32:23]brother and leave the narrations said that he traveled to shamm he
[32:27]stepped into the court of muawiyah muawiyah is a cunning man he
[32:30]knows exactly how to take advantage of this so you know what
[32:33]he said as soon as he saw tarakhan nadi walking in he
[32:36]said welcome to a man that had a small that did a
[32:39]small mistake on saffin yet we forgive him for it yes the
[32:43]man tariq hanadi looked at muawiyah and at that point he spoke
[32:47]the truth he said muawiyah don't think that we ran away from
[32:52]the dulim of ali ibn abi talib to your adil that we
[32:55]didn't run away from the oppression of ali ibn abi talib to
[32:58]your adil no to your justice yet we ran away from the
[33:00]justice of ali ibn abi talib to your because we could handle
[33:04]your dulim we can handle your oppression but the justice of ali
[33:07]ibn abi talib cannot be handled isn't it so that's why it's
[33:10]extremely hard to handle that that's why people have a hard time
[33:13]understanding the concept of a reformer they cannot handle a reformer and
[33:18]this is exactly what happened to imam the whole muslim society sympathized
[33:23]with imam hussein loved hussein yet when imam hussein said it's time
[33:28]to reform the religion of my grandfather it's time to correct what
[33:31]yazid ibn muawiyah has done then no one be be people separated
[33:36]people that did not want to be a part of the movement
[33:39]to begin with and people that actually went and fought imam hussain
[33:44]so it's important that first be a salah and then be a
[33:49]muslim because when you want to become a muslim and reform then
[33:53]you need to be a salah shaykh ibn mutahar al hali may
[33:58]allah bless his soul in one of his writings narrates an interesting
[34:02]story he said one time when he was traveling to qom it
[34:05]was during the month of muharram and i'm sure people inshallah may
[34:10]allah grant you the ziyara of sayyidama asum anqom and i'm sure
[34:13]you find that there are many circles of alim many circles of
[34:16]knowledge and then the majalis are going on there right he realized
[34:21]that the most packed majlis the most majlis of the majority of
[34:25]people was for a speaker so he stepped in and he heard
[34:29]the speaker he was very impressed by the speaker yet he looked
[34:33]at the faces of the people and he realized that there is
[34:35]no change in them he realized that there is no influence in
[34:39]them he's not been able to influence them yet he mentions that
[34:42]the speaker was very knowledgeable and he was accurate and he was
[34:45]straight to the point and he was being able to bring out
[34:48]proofs that man was a man of knowledge so then what he
[34:51]did he followed him he said until i reached to his house
[34:54]when he entered i knocked the door his wife answered the door
[34:58]i said where is your husband she said he's busy he said
[35:01]may i meet him she said no not now he said well
[35:04]listen i'm gonna be straight and honest with you i listened to
[35:08]your husband but i realized that there's no influence on the faces
[35:11]of the people is there something that your husband is doing wrong
[35:15]that you and i can work together in order for her for
[35:17]her to help him so she started tearing he said what is
[35:21]wrong she said my husband drinks every night so what do you
[35:25]mean he said every night he finished his majlis and he comes
[35:28]back home and he drinks right he's an alcoholic subhanallah and he
[35:32]said then no wonder that he's not being able to influence the
[35:36]personalities and the souls of the people right so in order for
[35:39]you for one to be a muslim then one definitely needs to
[35:42]be a salih and therefore when we dissect the narrative of ashura
[35:46]right when we dissect the whole notion of ashura basically reflecting on
[35:50]the whole notion of reforming because as a muslim individual then it
[35:54]is incumbent upon you to always spread righteousness always spread that sense
[35:58]of reform always when you see something wrong try to correct it
[36:02]it is your wajib to do so always emulate the verse in
[36:05]the whole quran about where he said what yes and that he
[36:12]made me blessed whatsoever a muslim is blessed fair whatsoever a muslim
[36:16]makes sure makes sure to always spread the blessings when we reflect
[36:20]back on the notion of ashura on the story of ashura the
[36:23]tragedy of ashura of karbala we realized that this is what we
[36:26]learned from the tragedy of karbala it was imam hussain that wanted
[36:30]to reform the society he wanted to educate the society and therefore
[36:35]we need to connect with ashura not only transform ashura and karbala
[36:39]into atir is that many of us might just put ashura and
[36:42]bracket it into a tear there are many things we need to
[36:44]understand about our about ashura by god yes is that if you
[36:48]really want to feel what occurred to sayyidah zaynab then try wearing
[36:52]the hijab of sayyidah zaynab if you really need to feel the
[36:57]suffering of sayyidah zaynab then this is how you need to connect
[37:00]with sayyidah zaynab wear your hijab proudly and understand that it was
[37:05]a sacrifice of sayyidah zaynab and that's why it came to you
[37:08]every time you think and hesitate in your mind is that should
[37:11]i keep it on should i take it off should i wear
[37:14]it should i not remember the sacrifice of sayyidah zaynab the sacrifice
[37:19]of sayyidah zaynab was so vast and by the way tonight is
[37:22]the night of ali al akbar isn't it notice hamid ibn muslim
[37:25]narrates a very interesting narration that i came across subhanallah it is
[37:29]said that when imam hussein rushed to the battlefield after ali al
[37:32]akbar was killed what did he do imam hussein what did he
[37:35]do he tried to carry ali al akbar it was such a
[37:38]strong tragedy that imam hussein couldn't the narrations say what is that
[37:43]he was dragging ali al akbar and the the legs of ali
[37:46]al akbar were dragging were dragging behind imam hussein tells you what
[37:50]is that imam hussein his back was almost broken is that he
[37:54]couldn't even carry properly ali al akbar hamid ibn muslim says until
[37:57]i saw zaynab exit from her tent as you know what imam
[38:03]hussain did he yelled out to bani hashem he said come take
[38:06]the body of ali al akbar he gave them the body and
[38:08]he ran to say the zaynab you know what he told her
[38:12]and he said oh sister zaynab as long as i am alive
[38:16]i cannot handle that the enemies of allah would stare at you
[38:21]staring at you so therefore enter back the when he saw sayyidah
[38:25]zaynab exit her tent what happened he forgot the musiba of this
[38:29]is what you need to understand is that always find the connection
[38:32]with muharram always find the connection with asher always find the connection
[38:36]with karbala understand that that movement happened for a reason and it
[38:41]needs to be dissected for a reason which leads us to our
[38:45]last and fifth and final point is that was there a man
[38:49]compared to habib al najar and the ummah of muhammad yes there
[38:53]was his name was aruwa ibn mas'ud al thakafi who is aruwa
[38:57]ibn mas'ud al thakafi aruwa ibn mas'ud al thakafi is the grandfather
[39:01]of ali al akbar from his mother layla it's her mother her
[39:06]mother is maimuna the daughter of abu sufyan arwa ibn mas'ud al
[39:11]thakafi was a very noble man in quraysh he was a man
[39:15]of nobility and obviously when you hear about bani taqif you know
[39:19]that bani taqif graduated knights bani taqif were a very strong tribe
[39:24]yes and therefore the arabs what did they say when rasulullah started
[39:28]with this message one of the reasons that they didn't believe in
[39:31]in him was what instead the quran says meaning that if only
[39:40]this quran that muhammad is claiming that he brings if only this
[39:42]quran was sent down on one of the two great men from
[39:47]the two cities or from the two towns meaning what mecca and
[39:50]ta'if the great man from ta'if was who uru ibn mas'ud al
[39:54]thakafi yes what did uru ibn mas'ud al thakafi did uru ibn
[39:58]mas'ud al thakafi converted to the religion of islam he came back
[40:01]and preached to his people bani taqif they would not believe him
[40:04]the narration says that aruah ibn masud al thakafi went on top
[40:08]of the roof of his house and even though he was the
[40:10]leader of bani fakif he started preaching to the people about the
[40:13]religion of islam so they shot him with arrows until he dropped
[40:18]down they carried him and they put him on his deathbed and
[40:22]then they asked him they said is this what you wanted is
[40:25]this the result that you wanted he said yes indeed i see
[40:28]the jannah that muhammad spoke of yes and therefore rasulullah says what
[40:36]he said the likeness of habib ul najar is my ummah is
[40:39]arwa ibn mas'ud al thakafi that he preached to his people even
[40:43]on his deathbed and adwa ibn mas'ud al thakafi as we said
[40:48]is the grandfather of ali il akbar it is narrated that one
[40:53]time muawiyah was sitting and there were people in his courts and
[40:57]then he looked at them and asked he said what he asked
[41:02]them who is more worthy of the khilafa they said you of
[41:06]course he said no it is indeed ali al akbar the son
[41:11]of hussein he said why he said because his grandfather is rasulullah
[41:15]and he combines the courage of bani hashem the nobility of bani
[41:21]taqif and the generosity of bani umayyah right i want you to
[43:21]focus on one thing and you know what a lot of people
[43:25]call us that we are the servants of imam hussein as a
[43:28]speaker they say that you are khadim al imam hussein you're the
[43:31]servant of imam hussein believe it or not there isn't one servant
[43:36]in this world that is proud about his job his or her
[43:38]job is that being a servant or a maid maybe it might
[43:41]not be a proud job yet the servant of imam hussain is
[43:45]a sultan a servant of imam hussain imam hussain the service of
[43:49]imam hussain makes you a king and i'm not talking about myself
[43:52]and speakers no we are not considered servants of imam you know
[43:56]who are considered servants of imam hussain are the people that organize
[44:00]majalis are the people that contact the speaker are the people that
[44:05]organize everything are the people that clean after us are the people
[44:08]that make the food are the people that distribute the food the
[44:12]people that distribute water these are the servants the true servants of
[44:15]imam hussain ali salam ali al akbar ali alaihi salam asked his
[44:19]father for a sip of water okay now i want you to
[44:22]ask the servants in every majlis that you go to that we
[44:25]sit down and we mourn over imam hussain don't we ask them
[44:29]to tell you how many sips of water do they find scattered
[44:32]around how many half empty bottles of water do you find scattered
[44:38]around in every majlis that we attend and all this water where
[44:42]does it go it goes to waste it goes to the garbage
[44:44]yet in that very same night we're mourning over ali al akbar
[44:49]he asked his father for what a sip of water yes how
[44:55]many times do we waste water in our cars how many bottles
[44:58]of water do you find scattered around in your own bedroom how
[45:02]much water do you find scattered around how many times do we
[45:05]waste water a child asks for water we give him a bottle
[45:08]of water he drinks it he throws it away then we get
[45:10]him another one then what is the concept of karbala what is
[45:15]the concept of ashura we have indeed not found the connection yet
[45:20]how many times do we waste food in majalis end up giving
[45:25]it to waste going to waste in our homes the concept of
[45:30]israf is really rooted in us unfortunately and yet we sit down
[45:35]when we cry over imam hussein yes they killed him thirsty yes
[45:40]how much water do we waste allah indeed so reflect back on
[45:45]the of ali al akbar alaihi salam it is interesting that because
[45:49]if you were to ask the servants of imam hussain alaihi salam
[45:52]they would tell you that they always found these scattered bottles of
[45:54]water you always find them scattered around in your bedroom everywhere yes
[46:01]understand the value of the and understand that the were deprived from
[46:06]it on the land of karbala'a do you think imam hussain alaihi
[46:09]salam couldn't provide ali baqpar with water no but there's a reason
[46:12]for struggle imam hussain alaihi salam alaihi says what imam hussain alaihi
[46:19]salam put your tongue over my tongue look how much am i
[46:24]struggling look what i am going through and then he tells him
[46:32]oh my son ali it's it's really astonishing see many of us
[46:37]have a hard time walking back when you send your son to
[46:41]his first day of school you send your son to his first
[46:45]day of school he starts crying you have a hard time leaving
[46:47]him you start struggling many of us might actually get weak right
[46:53]you come back home and you start remembering imam hussein not only
[46:58]leaves a son actually sends him to the battlefield and according to
[47:02]the narrations it was ali al akbar who was the first martyr
[47:05]because imam hussein wanted to sacrifice his son he wants to set
[47:09]the example first and that's why in the ziyrah of ali al
[47:12]akbar what does imam mahdi say al the best descendants from the
[47:27]bloodline of ibrahim al khalil imagine imam hussein sends ali al akbar
[47:33]to the battlefield and he looks at him sayyid azainab staring at
[47:39]the tent according to the narration that mentions that layla the mother
[47:44]of ali al akbar she was also in the tent she was
[47:46]using imam hussein's face as a mirror for he was following ali
[47:51]al akbar on the battlefield wherever he went ali al akbar made
[47:56]his father proud on the battlefield ali al akbar was piercing through
[48:01]the front lines of the enemies the poet nuri sardar pictures this
[48:06]in a very beautiful piece of poetry he says against 70,000 he
[48:12]cried out a pride that slept in his blood and none could
[48:18]hide her against the world he held the pride of his leader
[48:21]against the seven skies like a flash of thunder he replied when
[48:26]they cried we shall avenge badr ali is my leader and none
[48:30]could be prouder he killed 35 for vengeance they strive and yet
[48:36]one thousand years later ali's shall alive always living ali none can
[48:42]defeat ali ali al akbar attacks the battlefield crying out i am
[48:48]ali the son of hussein the son of ali one like me
[48:54]should not retreat i strike you with the sword of my grandfather
[48:59]protecting the religion of my grandfather protecting the woman and the children
[49:05]of bani hashem i strike you the strike of a man who's
[49:09]a hashmi who's a allawi and the narration say that ali al
[49:14]akbar was surrounded then a man by monk by kunfid ibn murallah
[49:21]abdi he strikes ali ibn akbar from the back on his head
[49:27]al akbar falls down on his horse the horse of takes him
[49:32]right in the middle of the army of yazid then unfortunately falls
[49:39]down on the ground crying out oh peace be upon you oh
[49:47]father hussein the narration says that imam hussein didn't know exactly what
[49:55]to do that he would look at the battlefield and then the
[50:00]narration says that he peers through the enemies right into the battlefield
[50:06]he strikes the color of ali al akbar he bends down over
[50:10]the father and the body of his son carries the body of
[50:14]ali al akbar he puts him on his lap ali al akbar
[50:21]looks back at his father and he says oh father hussein this
[50:26]is my grandfather rasulullah he's watering me from the pool of
