[0:09][Music] tonight if Allah gives us to our discussion on the discussion

[0:21]about themes in we'll take a look at the perspective of women

[0:29]this is a cont controversial point when it comes to the view

[0:37]of IM about women before we get into that discussion let's take

[0:43]a look at the quranic perspective on women and if we take

[0:50]a look at the ayat in the Quran we can divide them

[0:54]that talk about women we can divide them into three categories of

[0:58]course there are many ways to divide them but we can one

[1:00]of the ways is to divide them into three categories one category

[1:06]is the look of dignity and respect these are the ayat that

[1:17]talk about the reward for women the status of women these ayat

[1:22]praise the the the irrespec of being male or female for example

[1:29]such ayat include Allah subh says in I do not waste any

[1:42]good deed any deed of you whether it is a or a

[1:50]male or female believer no I will count it for you this

[1:58]means whatever Deeds they both do Allah will count it male or

[2:03]female second Ayah another Ayah it's a famous Ayah in the most

[2:11]honorable amongst you before Allah is the one with the highest degree

[2:13]of God Consciousness not male or female you know anyone if a

[2:21]woman has a higher level of tawa than a man she's closer

[2:25]to Allah subhah wa ta'ala than a man another Ayah Allah says

[2:43]in anyone who does Good Deeds male or female and they are

[2:51]believers that's the criteria they do good deeds with Iman okay okay

[2:55]then Allah says we will make them live a blessed life a

[3:02]blessed blessed life this blessed life according to some content they'll be

[3:08]content doesn't mean trouble free life Problem free life to the contrary

[3:13]we have rat the more M you become the more challenging life

[3:17]will becomes for you and hence life is most challenging for the

[3:22]prophets and then the successors of the prophets the aah of the

[3:27]prophets very challenging very difficult look what our prophet s Al had

[3:32]to go through what our IMS had to go through and it's

[3:37]not because of their sins these are are but Allah subhana waala

[3:41]challenges them in to elevate their status in the to go even

[3:48]higher and higher and higher up in the ranks so Allah says

[3:52]will make them live a blessed life they will have problems in

[3:55]their life but they have content what is that content steming from

[4:00]their IM in Allah Suba tal they have Allah in their heart

[4:02]so no matter what difficulties they go through what problems they go

[4:06]through they say and they continue in their path to Allah subhah

[4:13]wa taala Allah says we'll reward them male or female the other

[4:17]Ayah is number 35 ofah which is the Ayah we just recited

[4:21]at the beginning where Allah subhana wa ta'ala lists several attributes of

[4:28]the m and the m Allah says male and female he's talking

[4:37]about both genders here male Believers female Believers male submitters and female

[4:48]and so on so forth the Ayah continues the truthful ones and

[4:54]the truthful females the patient ones male and female the Ayah continues

[5:02]until Allah says Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a huge

[5:10]reward male or female so these are some of the ayat that

[5:16]when we take a look at them they give such great reverence

[5:19]respect to men and women it's about not about how much more

[5:27]they do it's not about the qu the quantity it's about the

[5:31]quality of the work okay so this is one ayat a group

[5:36]of these ayat and some of these women in the Quran they

[5:39]achieved a status similar to the prophets some of their status was

[5:42]similar to the prophets Allah subhana wa taala refers to in the

[5:51]Quran she attained the level of and that same attribute Allah gives

[5:57]to ibraim the father of the prophets Allah says about also so

[6:11]you can see what a great level that some of the women

[6:17]have achieved in the Quran okay so these are some of the

[6:19]ayat that we can categorize as the ayat that look at women

[6:25]with dignity and respect some other ayat in the Quran they talk

[6:31]about the creation aspect of women physiological aspect of women physical aspects

[6:40]of women because of those she undergoes certain events through her life

[6:45]that men do not go through and because of that she has

[6:48]different aam she has different rules for example Allah subhana wa ta'ala

[6:59]says about pregnancy in Surah lman we advanage the human being to

[7:13]take care of his parents every every human take care of your

[7:17]parents but your mother your mother the mother carried him through stages

[7:23]of weakness upon weakness as she goes into her pregnancy that's why

[7:28]we have among those who are exempt from fasting exempt is a

[7:37]lady who's in her late terms of pregnancy close now to her

[7:44]birth she does not have to fast she does not even need

[7:46]to try to fast if she fears for her life she fears

[7:50]for the life of the child she does not need to fast

[7:55]these are among the people who are exempt from fasting Allah mentions

[8:00]it this is something that is only for women they carry so

[8:07]Allah mentions it in the Quran what else when it comes to

[8:12]for example the monthly cycle Allah says 222 when the women go

[8:26]through these monthly Cycles they ask you about it say it is

[8:30]some kind of of pain that they go through some difficulty that

[8:35]they go through and then do not approach them during this time

[8:40]this is for the spouses you have to wait until they finish

[8:45]that cycle again this is something that relates to women for women

[8:50]these are specific rules for women because they go through this Allah

[8:53]is talking about them in the Quran when it comes to hijab

[9:01]hijab Allah subhah wa taala although he obligates hijab for male and

[9:06]female for the men and the women but the context of the

[9:08]hijab is different so in Ayah number 29 first Allah turns to

[9:15]the men say to the male Believers first Allah's talking to the

[9:25]men lower your gazes don't try to steal looks here and there

[9:30]so lower your gazes one day was sitting down and some men

[9:41]were around him a lady passes by and he noticed their eyes

[9:46]are following this lady he says the eyes of these man are

[9:52]following this lady it tells them remember Allah subhanahu waala he knows

[10:03]even the deception of the eye what is deception of the eye

[10:08]sometimes you can make a look in your eye that no one

[10:10]notices but Allah notices that look with the eye he knows he

[10:16]notices and then he tells them whenever you see a woman that

[10:19]you like go to your wife you know go to the wife

[10:25]so he's trying to tell them admonish them Allah says okay they

[10:36]should lower their gazes protect their private parts and do not engage

[10:39]in Haram acts that's more purifying for them Allah is all aware

[10:48]of what they do then he comes to the women women also

[10:54]should lower their gazes and they should also protect their private parts

[10:59]as well now he adds there is an addition and they should

[11:08]not show their ornaments their beauty the say except what is shown

[11:15]of it what is what is shown of it say a woman

[11:20]has to cover her whole body head to toe Head To Toe

[11:25]with the exception of the face and the hands up to the

[11:39]wearing makeup in front of men who are nonaham nonaham men that's

[11:43]not allowed that's Haram and that's a consensus among the unfortunately many

[11:49]women do not adhere to this it is must must for the

[11:55]wom to wear the makeup at home for the husband Haram to

[11:59]wear it outside for the people these days it's the opposite way

[12:04]when they want to go outside they put the makeup on at

[12:10]home no makeup and it's gone the other way around so Allah

[12:14]subhah wa ta'ala says this is not allowed what else now he

[12:21]continues when they wear the hijab some women used to put on

[12:28]the hijab the Garment on their head and then their neck would

[12:31]start showing ja is this part this part of the body is

[12:33]called jab not the jab like we say usually I where the

[12:36]pocket where you put your money ja this this part so he

[12:44]says Allah says she should take the scarf and cover her neck

[12:47]area as well that should be covered the head has to be

[12:53]covered the hair has to be covered all the hair and the

[12:56]neck has to be covered and their Z their beauty should not

[13:04]be revealed except for the exceptions here the the who are the

[13:07]the Ayah continues I don't I'm not going to go through the

[13:09]whole Ayah then towards the end Allah subhana wa taala also adds

[13:16]in the same Ayah this is Ayah number 31 ofah they should

[13:24]not be walking and wearing things on their feet or legs where

[13:29]they walk and they start jingling they should not be doing that

[13:33]one time I remember I was in the university and a lady

[13:39]walked by with high heels the professor went crazy cuz as she

[13:43]was walking the noise that she was making she he said that

[13:47]if I become a the president of the University one day I

[13:50]will ban high heels you know because they drive us crazy you

[13:57]know when they walk anyways that was what he said so that

[14:05]people would be aware of what they're wearing what they're hiding you

[14:08]know they jingle as they jingle people become aware Allah says that's

[14:14]not allowed even attracting the attention this is part of the modesty

[14:18]part of the modesty which is unfortunately in this day and age

[14:25]is gone from the society today when you talk about modesty look

[14:29]what is out there on the streets no modesty so therefore sometimes

[14:33]when we speak of these things people say she don't make religion

[14:36]so difficult we say this is the religion of Allah subhana wa

[14:40]ta'ala this is how Allah presented the religion not how I'm presenting

[14:44]the religion but unfortunately because there is so much unfortunately things happening

[14:49]outside on the street that when we tell them makeup is Haram

[14:52]you should not be wearing makeup you should not be jingling you

[14:56]know with your feet or something like this and all that said

[14:59]don't make it so difficult then in Allah says say all believer

[15:15]oh Prophet say to your wom and the female Believers that they

[15:20]should be wearing long garments loose garment jilbab is something loose not

[15:26]the tights so sometimes some ladies they wear the hijab but they're

[15:32]wearing tights with the hijab that is not allowed the Ayah clearly

[15:36]says jilbab jilbab is something that would cover the the body but

[15:39]it's loose it does not give the figure of the body so

[15:44]that is important and that's why it's important sometimes even in the

[15:48]husse when they come they're also wearing glues they're wearing not they're

[15:53]not wearing the hijab sometimes makeup on tights you know we should

[15:57]respect at least the husia when we come to the husse let's

[16:00]adhere to the teachings of Islam so these are important values the

[17:02]the name of shell gra g r a she published an article

[17:06]in that article she said the media portrayal of women is having

[17:18]an impact on 50% of girls and undergraduate women of the United

[17:25]States are suffering from psychological and physical problems because of the media

[17:32]portrayal of women yeah the way the the the women are portrayed

[17:35]you know when they come with all for example the makeup and

[17:41]the looks and sometimes these looks are edited they're edited looks and

[17:45]so on so forth what happens is many women in the United

[17:49]States according to the study 50% are suffering from psychological problems and

[17:56]physical problems such as anorexia bulimia these kind of illnesses it means

[18:07]they don't eat and when they eat they try to eject the

[18:12]food and this is one of the problems that is happening among

[18:16]a lot of girls even this day and age especially in the

[18:18]age of social media a lot of girls are experiencing this and

[18:21]do not be surprised if there are some girls in this community

[18:25]who are suffering from this as well I come across as a

[18:30]school principle I come across such cases you know so even in

[18:33]our communities it is happening it is happening some of our daughters

[18:36]are doing this and I talk to them why do you do

[18:42]this they say well because I look at for example you know

[18:45]certain individuals not mentioning names and when I look at myself I

[18:51]find myself I'm fat or they say sometimes we're at a girls

[18:55]gathering at a at a family gathering and one of those lady

[18:59]sometimes they joke with me they say oh you've gained weight she

[19:05]takes it really to heart she takes it really to heart that

[19:09]I've gained weight I'm fat so therefore she stops eating she stops

[19:15]whatever so who's harming who women are harming women women in their

[19:24]portrayal in such a way according to the study 50% of girls

[19:27]and undergraduate women in the United States stes are suffering suffering psychological

[19:34]suffering depression anorexia etc etc now let's do some math here very

[19:41]basic math the population of the United States is how many what's

[19:46]the population of the US 360 360 let's say 360 million okay

[19:53]let's say 5050 50% men 50% women okay let's let's go so

[20:00]how many many how many women 180 out of those 180 women

[20:04]how many are girls who are undergraduate students and girls as young

[20:12]as 7 years old how many 10% 20% okay let's say 20%

[20:19]let's say 20% of them are University students and girls in school

[20:24]20% of 180 is what 36 36 6 million 36 million let's

[20:31]say 50% of those that's how much 18 million almost 20 million

[20:38]people half the population of Canada about imagine half the population of

[20:44]Canada suffering from mental problems from depression from anorex Imagine can you

[20:49]imagine this the numbers when you look at them and this is

[20:54]only in the United States only in the US if you add

[20:56]Canada if you add the Western Society altogether Europe Australia you're talking

[21:02]about millions and upon millions of people who are suffering from this

[21:05]and this problems are not only now in the west they're also

[21:10]extending to the east because of the global village now people are

[21:14]watching these shows and therefore they're also trying to mimic and imitate

[21:18]and therefore when Islam says hijab is there imagine if hijab was

[21:25]in the society the whole society everyone is dressed modestly no makeup

[21:29]would we have these problems think about it Islam when it comes

[21:37]with these policies brothers and sisters it is a preventative policy prevention

[21:42]from the root solve it don't wait for you know cosmetic Solutions

[21:46]I'll give you an analogy brothers and sisters during Co you remember

[21:51]during Co we were told don't shake hands with people you remember

[21:55]that time fist bumps and then or elbow bumps you know so

[22:01]people stop shaking hands people stop why they say it's a prevention

[22:08]okay even after the vaccine was introduced they still said Do Not

[22:12]Shake Hands well why the vaccine is there they say no preventing

[22:16]it's better to prevent it than end up with the disease or

[22:22]with the virus and ending up in the hospital you know we

[22:24]don't want to take chances prevention so from the beginning Do Not

[22:27]Shake Hands with the opposite with the with the people interestingly Islam

[22:32]says do not shake hands with the opposite gender you know it's

[22:35]that's Haram and people used to say no it's embarrassing it's embarrassing

[23:02]the way postco even postco now some people they they still now

[23:08]a bit more conservative they still wear masks you still find people

[23:12]wearing masks even now they're wearing masks they wear gloves they don't

[23:16]want to shake hands and people respect that they say okay we

[23:19]respect it so why don't you tell the opposite gender that is

[23:23]Haram for me to shake the hands I'm sorry I'm not going

[23:25]to shake hands but I will greet you like this for example

[23:29]WR with that Islam comes with these prevention so when Islam says

[23:34]hijab hijab it comes to solve a big problem these 20 million

[23:40]or so individuals who are suffering from depression and all these mental

[23:52]that when you start wearing the hijab what what to wear when

[23:56]you wear the hijab what did I say Do You Remember what

[23:59]the the the not not just pants and tights and things and

[24:07]with the hijab where the this is the this is the of

[24:10]you read about when she came out to the to give the

[24:18]she was wearing was so long so long that she was stepping

[24:23]on it so that people don't even see her toes don't see

[24:26]her feet this this is the hijab of and this is not

[24:31]with streets and paved streets and all that stuff this is all

[25:48]or physical circumstances the third group of ayat and pay attention to

[26:13]the the the ornaments the beauties for the people people are attracted

[26:17]for women women children boys Ben boys gold and silver the nice

[26:30]rides good good horses these days it's like Lamborghinis and Mercedes masallah

[26:35]this is the horses of these days there's no problem in driving

[26:43]by the way these luxury cars huh don't don't say you know

[26:49]it's not har but as long as the person owns the car

[26:57]way around that's when the problem happens so Allah mentions these things

[27:03]having a lot of cattle back in those days was a big

[27:07]luxury you know I have like for example 100 camels I have

[27:09]all that that's luxury you know 100 camels that's like 100 Mercedes

[27:15]for example you know back in those days you know camel was

[27:18]luxury in those days so and the farms and the gardens and

[27:23]so on and so forth why does Allah subhana says women how

[27:27]come he did not mention men in this a because women unfortunately

[27:33]are more utilized in the perspective of Desire than men far more

[27:38]and this is what research shows in 2008 a researcher by the

[27:42]name of zaminsky zaminsky published a paper about the object objectification of

[27:47]women in that paper this is what the author writes I will

[27:52]not use the exact word he uses not appropriate from the member

[27:55]but I'll just use a sim a Sim similar word objectification occurs

[28:01]and he's referring to OB objectification with desire you know lustful looking

[28:06]occurs when a woman's body or body parts are singled out and

[28:11]separated from her as a person and she's viewed primarily as a

[28:16]physical object of male desire objectification Theory posits that objectification of females

[28:24]is likely to contribute to mental health problems that disproportionately affect women

[28:30]affect women disproportionately far more than men what are some of those

[28:35]mental health problems eating disorders depression and some other problems that he

[28:41]mentions via two main paths two main reasons the first path is

[28:49]direct and overt involves the objectification experiences when they experience these objectification

[28:56]they they they're affected by this and the other path is indirect

[29:00]and subtle involves women's internalization of these experiences what does that mean

[29:09]like I told you the lady is gathering for example and a

[29:12]lady tells a young lady that masallah you've gained weight oh I've

[29:15]gained weight she starts to internalize this it means I am not

[29:18]beautiful anymore so she starts to take it and then that can

[29:23]result in some problems where she does not eat anymore she stops

[29:26]drinking she stops eating she stops ejecting what she eats all these

[29:32]are problem this is what the Quran is warning about Quran is

[29:36]warning that do not utilize women in such way Allah created her

[29:44]with dignity this lady this woman she's a counterpart to the man

[29:52]in terms of her submission to worshiping Allah subhah wa ta'ala she

[29:57]can Ascend to higher status like AIA maim who the Quran doesn't

[30:02]mention her name but Allah mentions her as an example even though

[30:06]she was the wife of the Pharaoh lived with him but she

[30:09]chose a completely different path she lived in a corrupt environment corrupt

[30:15]environment with the most corrupt person at that time the environment was

[30:22]bad yet she chose to create for herself a niche in that

[30:25]bad environment to obey Allah worship Allah and Allah uses her as

[30:32]an example example so that's a beautiful thing that's a great thing

[30:37]so just because we're living in this Society some ladies tell me

[30:40]well this is the fashion sheh we say well Asia did not

[30:44]go with the fashion of her husband she also lived in a

[30:46]very corrupt environment but she did not choose to go with that

[30:53]corruption she chose to do the right thing wear the right clothes

[30:55]behave the right way not tick to and Instagram how many of

[31:01]us look at those videos on a daily basis and get ideas

[31:03]on what to do and what not to do influencers shows shows

[31:07]do you know how many shows your children might be watching Netflix

[31:12]and Amazon and apple and all these shows and they talk about

[31:16]teenagers and they're trying to fix the problem but they show the

[31:21]teenagers how to do these problems so if a teenager did not

[31:28]know now they watch it and now they know problems such as

[31:31]self harm you'll be surprised in your community I guarantee you it

[31:34]happens self harm in our communities sh our daughters are doing self

[31:43]harm because they're feeling depressed they're feeling lonely these are the realities

[31:48]you like it or you don't I told you as a principal

[31:52]I see it I see it with our daughters from the community

[31:56]these are all issues Islam Quran is trying to address them so

[32:03]when it comes to the warning part the Quran we find Quran

[32:09]also warning us about for example remember Allah says the attraction for

[32:17]the people for women and so on Allah says also dun is

[32:20]attracted Allah says the disbelievers they love dun they want it they

[32:29]like it so attractive to them that's why you find this man

[32:34]who's over 8 years old he wants to become the president of

[32:35]the United States for the second time once is not enough once

[32:39]is not enough he loves it so so good power and all

[32:44]that money I was reading in the news in the New York

[32:46]Times the year of his election his last year in the office

[32:51]in January the election happened in November in January it said that

[32:56]he had cost that taxpayer $110 million in golfing the taxpayers paid

[33:06]for his golfing $110 million over the course of his presidency so

[33:10]far because it's stressful you know being a president is stressful so

[33:13]he needs to vent so he goes to his own Gulf club

[33:18]and he you know golfs so when he golfs somebody has to

[33:21]pay for it and it's the taxpayers $110 million how many people

[33:29]could have you fed with $110 million for the gulfing now you

[33:36]see why there are they in the US in the US not

[33:37]other countries in the US One in six children sleeps hungry in

[33:44]the United States one in six go read the statistics in the

[33:47]US this rich country obviously if the president is spending 110 million

[33:52]on gulfing then obviously there will be you know one and six

[33:58]children Hungary so or an is warning Quran is warning says Allah

[34:01]is trying to tell us don't be attracted D is good if

[34:07]it used to lies for the it's good it's good but if

[34:10]you abuse it it becomes Deadly Women are great creation of Allah

[34:15]subhana wa ta'ala Allah gives them a lot of dignity but they

[34:20]may become abused and that's what Allah is warning about with this

[34:25]huge introduction the introduction took took me just like about 35 minutes

[34:31]now I come to when we hear about IM Ali talking about

[34:38]women in we might think he's talking negatively about them he's really

[34:45]not being respectful towards them he is really talking about that third

[34:53]aspect be aware do not abuse them because they can be utilized

[35:05]speak so now we come to I'll use two examples only two

[35:07]examples for the sake of brevity in one sermon number 78 and

[36:19]to he's not attacking them something physiological Allah mentions it in the

[36:25]Quran he says during this time when they have their menstrual cycle

[36:28]they don't pray they don't fast okay what about the mind they

[36:37]have less this is an Ayah in the Quran he says that

[36:47]you need two women to witness compared to one man one man

[36:51]and two women as Witnesses Quran clarifies what does the Quran say

[37:00]so if one of them forgets the other one will remind the

[37:06]the person what does that mean listen to this brothers and sisters

[37:09]when I was doing my PhD in chemistry my professor my supervisor

[37:14]came to me one day we're just having a conversation he told

[37:18]me that his mother was a professor at Queen University his mother

[37:23]was a professor he said my mother isolated she isolated ated a

[37:30]particular hormone from the placenta this hormone makes women forget it helps

[37:37]women to forget probably forget the pain of Labor all that pain

[37:43]of Labor he said one day this was back in the 70s

[37:48]he says late 60s early' 70s he said one day she brought

[37:54]the hormone home she brought the hor hormone home she took some

[37:57]cards and she called my father and my brother she said come

[38:01]here guinea pigs so she brought some cards and she said like

[38:07]what is this card so this you know he said like okay

[38:08]this is the king okay and then she turns it which one
