[0:00]young men often ask me what the Islamic perspective is on martial
[0:05]arts or MMA or Combat Sports in general so I wanted to
[0:07]take the opportunity in this video to speak about combat in Islam
[0:11]the truth is martial arts is a combination of philosophy and art
[0:15]with sport it is an engagement of the heart and the mind
[0:19]and a true language of the body Bruce Lee who is widely
[0:21]regarded as the founder of mixed martial arts through his fighting philosophy
[0:25]of J kundo eloquently describes the spirit of martial arts in an
[0:29]interview from kids ago but to express oneself honestly not lying to
[0:35]oneself and to express myself honestly not that my friend is very
[0:41]hard to do and you have to train you have to keep
[0:44]your reflexes so that when you want it it's there when you
[0:48]want to move you're moving and when you move you are determined
[0:50]to move not taking one inch not anything less than that this
[0:54]spiritual outlook on combat famously resonates when looking at the Samurai and
[0:59]their code of bisho which is the way of the warrior it's
[1:03]a life of fighting simultaneously fused with one of wisdom and Tranquility
[1:07]it's through this parallel that balance of the inner and the outer
[1:11]the strong and the gentle the yin and the Yang that one
[1:17]reaches true spiritual equilibrium when it comes to Islam there exists a
[1:20]code of honor that very much resembles Bido special fraternities based on
[1:26]chivalry have historically thrived in the Islamic tradition with combat skill at
[1:32]the heart of them built upon a philosophy known as F this
[1:36]name is derived from the word feta linguistically meaning young male which
[1:42]in time took on a greater meaning more related to a young
[1:47]Knight endowed with an innocence and code of chillery a spiritual Warrior
[1:50]who lived by this code of honor fatua was then anciently symbolized
[1:54]by the Arabs through the personality of alib ab Talib one of
[2:01]the greatest legendary Warriors not only in consideration of Islamic literature but
[2:04]in Arabian and Global literature too IM Ali was deemed as the
[2:11]main representative of the fua spirit named Master of the fan he
[2:15]was trained by his master the prophet Muhammad until he was eventually
[2:18]initiated into becoming the ultimate manifestation of the inner and outer equilibrium
[2:25]by succeeding the prophet through a lifetime of balancing spiritual struggle with
[2:31]the military Warfare the famous narration is then understood with greater depth
[2:36]when it was said there is no young Warrior but Ali and
[2:42]no sword except in the centuries to follow F became a tradition
[2:49]and brought about the initiation of the fan an order of young
[2:53]men who became spiritual Knights a symbol of rebellion against all evil
[2:58]and striving for sincere servanthood to God this order of knights was
[3:02]built upon Brotherhood Bound by rights drawn from the principle of chivalry
[3:07]and the life of im as the ultimate archetype the tradition produced
[3:13]countless men throughout history who combined moral virtue mercy and generosity with
[3:19]proverbial physical strength pwan mmmi is one such wrestler Knight a Persian
[3:26]Legend of fua who still has stories told about him throughout all
[3:31]of Iran until this very day and is one of the reasons
[3:33]why wrestling still thrives there as such a popular sport I don't
[3:38]want to make this video about fua per se that's a huge
[3:41]topic for another day but what is relevant to our topic is
[3:46]that these men lived with a spiritual Warrior mentality in which they
[3:51]were very physically endowed and capable and athletically efficient yes they manifested
[3:57]the greatest act of mercy and forgiveness while being strong just as
[4:01]their Master IM Ali did how could one truly be a spiritual
[4:03]night of f if they still could not express their body in
[4:09]combat form it was imperative upon the fan to engage in constant
[4:13]physical training as the famous line goes you learn to fight so
[4:19]that you won't have to it is to have skill confidence and
[4:21]Mastery of one's own self yet not having to use it to
[4:26]respond to anger with Mercy whilst one could very easily have responded
[4:30]with violence and of course to stay ready even during times of
[4:34]Peace because it's always better to be a warrior in a garden
[4:39]than a gardener in a war for the greatest combat we will
[4:42]ever have to perform takes place within each and every single one
[4:46]of us inside the self in the words of s Hussein n
[4:50]the the inner nature is a light that shines at the center
[4:55]of man's being even if it has now become covered by the
[4:58]veils of passion and forgetfulness for Tu creates a condition in the
[5:02]soul that allows the spirit of man's F to triumph over the
[5:08]darkness of this world and to conquer man's Fallen nature rather than
[5:13]remaining within him in a state of potency the goal of AA
[5:17]is then to make possible the transfer of the light of f
[5:21]from potentiality to actuality for the greatest battle of the veritable night
[5:25]is this struggle to make possible the reconquest of our Nature by
[5:28]the light of spiritual chivery on the highest level is the art
[5:34]by means of which we become ourselves and gain full awareness of
[5:40]our primordial nature maral art is a key component of the spiritual
[5:43]chivery if we are to strip away the skills of combat from
[5:46]the Islamic tradition then one must wonder about the great warriors of
[5:50]Islamic history and how they trained their bodies how did and Malik
[5:58]Andi come to be be such skillful Fighters and warriors without physical
[6:02]training they were men who had to wield swords on the battlefield
[6:09]heavy swords and it's only logical that one must conclude that they
[6:12]have trained for their moments of Truth during the Battle of Jamal
[6:16]when im Ali Alam gave the banner to his son Muhammad it's
[6:20]reported that he told him the following words mountains may move from
[6:24]their place but you should not move from yours grit your teeth
[6:30]lend your to Allah in giving yourself to him plant your feet
[6:34]firmly in the ground have your eye on the remotest Foe and
[6:39]close your eyes to the number of the enemy remain assured that
[6:42]support is only from Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala in preparations for another battle
[6:47]it's reported that IM Ali called out to his soldiers to lower
[6:50]their voices to pray to be one in the heart but also
[6:55]to draw their swords and display their power look at the balance
[6:58]the equilibrium now genertion such as these are numerous and if we
[7:03]are to contemplate IM aliam speaking to his soldiers in the multiple
[7:07]battles he was a part of then it's clear that he is
[7:11]not speaking to Farmers or to laymen to heed his advice of
[7:14]combat skill and Battalion organization then one must be a fighter a
[7:17]warrior and to be such a fighter takes physical training and practice
[7:22]the type of training specified in the narrations differ and are suitable
[7:26]to the context of their time there are traditions of lifting heavy
[7:29]weights for example to train the body on the importance of skillful
[7:33]weeding wielding of the sword or of archery and horse riding and
[7:36]swimming all of which were necessary and primary skills of a knight
[7:42]in that time there even exist reports that IM Hassan and IM
[7:45]Hussein used to wrestle each other in their youth if one is
[7:50]to open in numerous classical Traditions traced back to the prophet and
[7:57]His holy family would be found in which the pertain to these
[8:00]skills of combat if I was to narrate the following quote to
[8:06]you all of goodness is in the sword underneath the sword and
[8:10]in the shadow of the sword and I told you that it
[8:14]was said by a man named mitsumi mioto it would not be
[8:17]farfetched to understand it in the context of a sacred Samurai quote
[8:22]the truth however is that the quote is actually attributed to IM
[8:26]Muhammad a man who was not known to have taken a part
[8:28]in any war in entire lifetime yet was Master of the bow
[8:33]and arrow you see it's not merely about fighting one must penetrate
[8:36]deeper through the layers of the words of the prophet and his
[8:43]family to understand that this is the rhetoric of a spiritual Warrior
[8:46]there is a plethora of resources available through which the following understanding
[8:52]may be derived that to be a spiritual Warrior one must physically
[8:56]train with the condition of God Consciousness in infused throughout it all
[9:02]that physical training becomes a spiritual act when the intention is for
[9:07]Allah to remember him in your moments of strength and acknowledge that
[9:11]all your strength is through him and to remember him in your
[9:14]moments of weakness and acknowledge that you remain nothing without Allah because
[9:24]there is no strength except with Allah IM Ali's words to his
[9:29]Fighters before War were always is infused with God Consciousness displaying the
[9:32]spiritual Dynamic to combat for in Islam they are infused one and
[9:38]the same so concerning the Outlook are martial arts or Combat Sports
[9:42]legally permissible in Islamic law sayani's answer is that they are permissible
[9:46]as long as there is no significant danger to one's Health this
[9:50]notion of significant danger though that's referred back to the individual on
[9:55]a Case by casee basis which in is called La what may
[10:01]be permissible to one individual may be impermissible to another depending on
[10:06]the circumstances it's not merely a black and why issue Halal Haram
[10:09]answer it's not like that it's upon the individual to make a
[10:15]sound personal judgment based on research and knowledge concerning the specific context
[10:18]you have to consider whether or not sparring is included or if
[10:23]it is just technique work if sparring is included then how heavy
[10:26]is it how heavy is that sparring how often does it take
[10:29]place how protective is the gear in essence how much precaution is
[10:34]taken to avoid injury How likely is it that the injury would
[10:37]be serious if suffered the skill level of the practitioner would also
[10:41]have to be taken into consideration for example if a beginner enters
[10:47]into a national tournament to fight professional athletes and professional fighters then
[10:51]of course that's obviously going to be deemed impermissible in Islamic law
[10:55]however if one carefully plans out their progress and their opponents then
[11:00]there is no reason why martial arts would become a significant danger
[11:04]to one's Health if one is just training these questions do not
[11:10]pertain only to Combat Sports by the way I would ask very
[11:13]similar questions to a person who plays any other sport in fact
[11:18]if wants to check several surveys that can be found all over
[11:21]the Internet and contrast the statistics with Combat Sports then we'd find
[11:26]that basketball uh football not soccer football baseball gymnastics cycling and skating
[11:31]are all more likely in many cases to lead to injury than
[11:34]martial arts is it's because martial arts are essentially based on fighting
[11:38]an opponent that is so misunderstood and often times feared of course
[11:44]there will always be those who practice martial arts with wrong intentions
[11:48]and we see a profane image of martial arts in the mainstream
[11:55]violence and revenge take over their hearts and Minds however there are
[11:59]also people of all religions and of no religion who study and
[12:03]practice martial arts in order to learn respect discipline and gain skill
[12:07]and strength as a Muslim safely practicing martial arts with the correct
[12:12]intention is deemed a form of worship when infused with God Consciousness
[12:19]how else can one truly seek the inner if they are weak
[12:21]in the outer as the famous Hadith says when the prophet Muhammad
[12:26]is reported to have said M that the strong believer is better
[12:32]and more beloved than the weak believer and finally I will leave
[12:38]you with the following 12 points that make up the essence of
[12:43]the spiritual Warrior of f number one fear of God obedience to
[12:46]religious law a strong body a good manner of speaking courage impeccable
[12:53]wisdom complete patience vast knowledge unceasing effort a generous character abstention from
[13:03]what is unlawful and grateful for His blessings may peace be upon
[13:12]those who follow his guidance
