[0:07]It's good.
[0:10]Thank you.
[0:46]Respected brothers and sisters, Chapter 2 Surah Bakar verse 187.
[1:02]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala shed some light in this verse on some
[1:10]of the challenges that the early Muslims faced in relation to fasting
[1:15]during the month of Ramadan.
[1:16]And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala then mentions some of the basic laws
[1:21]of fasting.
[1:23]And thus this verse 187 of al Bakar is one of the
[1:28]most instrumental verses in the Quran when it comes to understanding when
[1:32]the time of fasting starts and when the time of fasting ends.
[1:37]So let's take a look at this verse and see what Allah
[1:42]subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions in it.
[1:44]Allah subhana wa ta'ala says in this verse [Music] Allah subhanahu wa
[2:24]ta'ala in this verse he begins by like we said addressing a
[2:28]difficulty a struggle that the early Muslims had with fasting.
[2:34]I think imam in one hadith he explains what this verse is
[2:40]talking about.
[2:41]He unpacks this verse.
[2:42]It's a beautiful ver it's a beautiful hadith from the Imam.
[2:47]The Imam says that initially when Allah legislated fasting for Muslims in
[2:52]the month of Ramadan in the beginning of Islam fasting was different
[2:57]than it is today.
[2:58]And it was different in two ways.
[3:00]Listen carefully.
[3:02]The first way that fasting was different was that when the month
[3:10]of Ramadan began, it was haram for a married couple to engage
[3:14]in any relationship whether it was during the day or the night.
[3:18]So they had to avoid each other for the entire month of
[3:22]Ramadan.
[3:24]Almadisam says until eventually that proved to be too difficult for some
[3:31]of the Muslims especially the recently married.
[3:32]So what happened is they kept on breaking this law they would
[3:39]feel guilty repent to Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala until Allahawel brought down this
[3:45]verse and Allahawajel changed that law made it easier upon Muslims.
[3:53]The verse came down.
[4:02]In this verse, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says that relations between a
[4:06]married couple from now isal but at night.
[4:11]Thus, it only remains haram during the day.
[4:15]And that's why today when you open the book of of any
[4:22]scholar of any you will see that they list what invalidates your
[4:24]fast.
[4:25]When we fast from dawn to we have to stay away from
[4:30]about 10 things.
[4:30]We have to stay away from food.
[4:31]We have to stay away from water.
[4:33]One of the things that you will see is mentioned that one
[4:37]has to stay away from any type of intimate relationships with their
[4:42]spouse.
[4:43]And if one doesn't if they don't stay away from that during
[4:49]the day then that will invalidate their fast.
[4:51]They will have to pay a kafar a fine and they will
[4:54]have to make up that day after the month of Ramadan.
[4:59]However, this is only during the day from until at night time
[5:03]it becomes.
[5:05]So this im says was not always the law of Islam in
[5:11]the beginning of Islam.
[5:11]The entire month of Ramadan, it was haram for the married couple
[5:15]until Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala brought down the verse.
[5:19]He said, "Allah knows that you were deceiving yourselves," meaning breaking this
[5:27]law and thus Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has accepted your repentance and
[5:33]Allah has forgiven you.
[5:36]From now on, Allah has made fasting easier for the married couple
[5:40]because at night it becomes halal for them to spend time with
[5:44]each other.
[5:45]So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala abregated the old hum Islam began with
[5:52]a law and then a couple of maybe months or years later
[5:55]the law of Islam completely changed.
[6:00]And this concept is called by the scholars it's called anes.
[6:03]There are verses in the Quran where they abregated other verses or
[6:08]other laws of the Quran.
[6:12]One example clear example is is the example of the when the
[6:16]Muslims began praying in the beginning they did not pray towards thea
[6:19]where did they pray towards where not I heard right they they
[6:33]faced al this was the law of Islam that when you pray
[6:36]your salah you would have to face aljud a in Palestine until
[6:43]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala brought down a verse saying that now the
[6:47]will change forever.
[6:47]This is what it's called abrogation.
[6:49]They call this meaning a new law begins in Islam.
[6:54]And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said from now on the is in
[7:06]Medina.
[7:07]This verse it's mentioned that it came down while was in prayer
[7:12]and he was facing Palestine while he's in the state of Jira
[7:17]comes down he tells him yeah Muhammad Allah has changed the Palestine
[7:22]is this way and Mecca is the opposite way so in your
[7:27]in the middle of your salah the prophet was ordered to change
[7:30]his so the prophet while he's in rur he had to change
[7:35]maybe I think it's about 180 80 or some degrees he had
[7:38]to completely change his and face.
[7:43]So one prayer began by facing Palestine by facing and he ended
[7:51]by facing that mosque in Medina is still available.
[7:54]It's still there when you go inshallah Allah subhana t gives you
[7:59]the to go to one of the places that you visit is
[8:03]the masjid of the two it's the masjid where Allah subhanahu wa
[8:09]ta'ala changed the he abrogated so this is the concept of this
[8:14]verse the say is another example of in the beginning of Islam
[8:20]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala he introduces fasting Allah says that fasting is
[8:34]waj and fasting is waj in the same way that it was
[8:36]waj on the earlier nations.
[8:40]The earlier nations this was their fast for the entire month of
[8:43]Ramadan.
[8:44]They had to stay away from marital relationships.
[8:49]So Allah says this is the but then in this verse Bakar
[8:51]verse 187 Allah changes the law.
[8:53]He says from now on at night it is halal.
[8:56]So this is the first way that fasting in the beginning is
[9:02]of Islam changed.
[9:03]It became easier im says that's number one.
[9:08]Number two and there was another difference.
[9:09]The other difference much more difficult applied to everyone.
[9:14]What's the second difference?
[9:15]The Imm said that in the beginning of Islam, the law of
[9:23]fasting stated that you're allowed to break your fast and you can
[9:28]eat the entire night until you sleep, not until you sleep.
[9:34]So if you spent the whole night awake, alhamdulillah, you got the
[9:40]whole night to eat.
[9:43]But if you sleep at 9:00 p.m.
[9:44]1000 p.m.
[9:45]11 p.m.
[9:45]your fasting starts once you fall asleep.
[9:48]That's why people in the beginning they would only eat one meal.
[9:51]Eatar then you go and sleep.
[9:55]But you don't have the opportunity to wake up for because once
[9:59]you sleep your fasting would start.
[10:02]The imam says until an incident happened.
[10:05]The Imam says, "One of the companions of Alm of by the
[10:13]name of Jer orb.
[10:15]I'm sorry.
[10:16]He was an old man and he was weak.
[10:20]This man had a long exhausting day.
[10:22]He goes home.
[10:25]He's waiting for his wife is cooking all the good foods, the
[10:28]and the bag and whatever that we like for our food, right?
[10:34]forar.
[10:35]He's waiting and waiting and waiting.
[10:36]It'sar time and the food is still not ready.
[10:39]You know, that's the worst feeling when it'sar time.
[10:40]If if the food is is, you know, delayed by 30 seconds
[10:44]or by 1 minute, we go crazy.
[10:46]Has to be ready exactly at the at the second yi.
[10:50]So, he waits, waits.
[10:51]His wife is still cooking.
[10:54]She's she delays until all of the sudden he falls asleep.
[10:56]He's tired.
[10:57]He has a long day.
[10:58]He falls asleep.
[11:00]His wife comes a few minutes later.
[11:02]She brings the food.
[11:05]She sees him sleeping.
[11:05]She wakes him up.
[11:06]Habibi, I brought you all this good food.
[11:08]But he realizes that he slept and he did not eat anything.
[11:15]So he tells his wife, I can no longer havear because I
[11:18]slept before I ate.
[11:21]So the man had a very difficult night.
[11:24]That entire night he did not eat anything.
[11:28]The next day was an exhausting day again because the hadith says
[11:32]was building with the Muslims.
[11:33]He was digging a trench.
[11:37]It seems like this happened before the battle of Aland when the
[11:40]Muslims built when they dug that trench.
[11:42]So this old man, he goes, he hasn't eaten imagine food for
[11:45]more than a day now.
[11:47]And he has to go and engage in this difficult activity of
[11:50]digging the trench.
[11:52]While he is digging, all of the sudden the Muslims notice this
[11:55]guy falls down and he passes out.
[11:57]He faints.
[11:59]All the Muslims come to him.
[12:00]Allah comes to him.
[12:00]They wake him up.
[12:02]What's going on?
[12:04]He speaks about his story.
[12:04]He says, "I didn't have yesterday because unfortunately Allah, my wife, she
[12:08]brought the food late or I slept.
[12:12]I missed out onar and I have not had anything to eat
[12:16]since the day before yesterday." Allah felt sorry for him.
[12:20]says Allahawel brought down this other part of the verse.
[12:27]Allahawel said you know what now I will make fasting easier for
[12:31]you Muslims.
[12:33]Now after this incident you can eat the entire night from you
[12:38]can eat until and this verse brothers and sisters is the most
[12:43]verse that we love in the Quran and it's the most verse
[12:45]that we obey.
[12:47]We really obey this verse 100% we eat from until Allah subhanahu
[12:50]wa ta'ala says Allah says from now on you can eat all
[13:07]of the night until you see once starts this is when you
[13:14]stop eating.
[13:15]So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala made that law easier until the day
[13:20]of judgment.
[13:22]Now the question is why did Allah do this?
[13:23]Why did he legislate twice?
[13:28]First a difficult form of fasting and then he eased it and
[13:32]made it easier.
[13:33]Why not from day one?
[13:34]Allah subhana wa ta'ala who doesn't play games.
[13:37]This is religion.
[13:37]This is faith.
[13:39]This is something serious.
[13:40]Why did Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala especially Allah knows the future he
[13:45]knew that this would be difficult on Muslims.
[13:48]So why didn't he just from day one when fasting was introduced
[13:51]and legislated say that it's it's halal at night between the married
[13:54]couple and at the same time you can eat all night sleep
[13:59]doesn't do anything.
[14:01]Why did Allah do it in phases?
[14:04]Commentators of the Quran have mentioned two reasons.
[14:04]Listen carefully brothers and sisters.
[14:06]This makes us feel so loved and honored by Allahel.
[14:11]So you know how dear we are to Allah and how dear
[14:17]his messenger is to him.
[14:17]The first reason they say is because Allahawel wanted the Muslims to
[14:26]be more appreciative of their religion.
[14:29]See there are those Muslims that think their religion is difficult and
[14:35]other religions are easier.
[14:36]Allahawel wanted the Muslims to realize that their religion is the easiest
[14:44]out of the divine religions that Allah sent to all of the
[14:47]messengers.
[14:48]How many prophets did Allah send?
[14:51]How many prophets?
[14:50]The hadith tell us how many?
[14:53]124.
[14:54]There are some traditions that say 360,000 prophets.
[15:00]360 or 360 messengers of Allah subh.
[15:04]So hundreds or thousands some of them they brought a completely new
[15:08]Sharia a completely new religion right the easiest brothers and sisters most
[15:14]lenient of all of those religions is Islam Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[15:23]he wanted Muslims to understand this how we said a couple of
[15:27]minutes ago that when Allahawel prescribed fasting on the earlier nations all
[15:32]nations had to fast of the previous prophets.
[15:37]Their fasting was in the way that it was first introduced.
[15:39]So when Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala told Muslims to fast, he told
[15:43]them to fast like how the previous nations used to fast.
[15:48]And the previous nations according to the hadith, this is how they
[15:52]would fast.
[15:53]Once they sleep, they can no longer eat.
[15:56]Now that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala makes them experience the difficulty of
[16:04]what the earlier nations had to experience and now he lifts this
[16:09]restriction.
[16:09]Now they can be more appreciative because only if you feel taste
[16:15]and experience hardship you start to what?
[16:17]You start to appreciate ease and comfort.
[16:22]Someone who's never been poor will usually not appreciate wealth.
[16:25]Someone who's never been sick will not appreciate their health.
[16:30]Someone who's always seen comfort will not appreciate comfort.
[16:35]When do you start appreciating these of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala?
[16:41]When you lose them when you are denied a then you receive
[16:44]it.
[16:45]Now it becomes valuable.
[16:47]You and I here living in this country, brothers and sisters, Allahel
[16:51]has drowned us with so many that we're not even aware of.
[16:58]Alhamdulillah, it is safe.
[16:58]Everywhere you go, you don't have to worry about war, about violence,
[17:01]about a missile coming down and killing you or killing your father
[17:06]or mother or children.
[17:07]But there's every individual every day.
[17:09]Do we thank Allah subhanana wa ta'ala for this?
[17:12]I thank you, ya Allah, that there isn't a war, that there
[17:14]isn't a violence here.
[17:17]When we see what's happening to the people of Gaza and elsewhere
[17:20]in the world in southern Lebanon or for example in Ukraine, this
[17:23]is when we realize alhamdulillah we're so blessed by Allah subhanahu wa
[17:28]ta'ala.
[17:29]When you see a sick person who has to constantly go to
[17:33]the hospital, they have to constantly seek treatment.
[17:35]Alhamdulillah, I'm healthy.
[17:37]I thank Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
[17:38]Electricity.
[17:39]Alhamdulillah.
[17:40]We have 24 hours of electricity here.
[17:43]You never have to worry about it.
[17:45]You don't even you've never probably seen a generator in your life.
[17:48]You never have to touch it.
[17:49]You never have to worry about it.
[17:50]But many countries in the world, not everyone is that lucky.
[17:55]In Iraq, in Lebanon, in Pakistan, many of the Muslim countries, most
[17:58]people have to live on generators because the power keeps on being
[18:03]cut.
[18:03]The the the power that's given by the government.
[18:07]And that's why over there it's truly a nightmare when it's hot,
[18:11]right, at night, you don't have electricity.
[18:13]If you don't have uh if you don't have a generator, generators
[18:16]are expensive.
[18:17]Even if you have a generator, it doesn't really solve much because
[18:20]now you need gas for the generator and gas is expensive and
[18:23]sometimes you have to wait in long lines until you get alhamdulillah
[18:28]here.
[18:29]You don't have to even think about that.
[18:31]Do you thank Allah subhana wa ta'ala every day for that?
[18:33]Usually not.
[18:35]Why?
[18:36]Because we have not experienced living without it.
[18:37]But once you go to the Middle East, spend a couple of
[18:42]days there, then you come back here.
[18:43]Wow, I'm in heaven.
[18:44]Alhamdulillah.
[18:45]You become more appreciative.
[18:47]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wanted the Muslims to appreciate that their religion
[18:53]is a easy religion.
[18:55]Allah showed them in the beginning.
[18:57]This is how the earlier nations had to fast.
[19:01]You experienced it.
[19:01]It was difficult.
[19:03]Right?
[19:04]Now I will relieve you of it.
[19:06]When Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does that, now they become much more
[19:10]appreciative.
[19:11]They understand why Islam, brothers and sisters, is the most beautiful religion.
[19:16]It is the easiest religion.
[19:18]It is the religion of ease, the religion of mercy.
[19:22]This is one reason that the commentators mentioned why Allah subhanahu wa
[19:27]ta'ala legislated fasting in these two stages.
[19:30]Number two, the second reason that's mentioned, they say that Allah legislated
[19:36]fasting in that more difficult way and Allah perhaps perhaps wanted it
[19:42]to stay that way.
[19:42]But it was due to intervening and asking for Allah to make
[19:49]it easier that Allahel changed the law.
[19:52]We have traditions that tell us when we when he was taken
[19:58]to paradise, he was taken to the heavens and the story of
[20:01]he went to the closest area that any created being can go
[20:08]to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala by the tree of mutah.
[20:11]There's a lot tree.
[20:13]I've talked about this in the past.
[20:15]When he went to that area, Allah subhanana wa ta'ala asked him,
[20:18]"Yeah, Muhammad, ask me anything and I will give you Allah has
[20:24]not told this to any prophet that I will give you whatever
[20:29]you want.
[20:27]It's just basically a blank check.
[20:32]Yeah.
[20:30]Muhammad ask for anything and I will give you.
[20:34]The hadith tells us the prophet asked nothing for himself.
[20:39]This shows you the selflessness of Allah and his love for his
[20:43]um that's why I said brothers and sisters it is a feel
[20:49]proud that you are from the um ofasoolham.
[20:55]So the prophet did not ask for any personal things.
[20:59]The only thing the prophet asked for was for Allah to be
[21:03]lenient upon his ummah.
[21:06]He told Allah, Allah quotes him in the holy Quran, the last
[21:10]verse of Bakar, this is the dua of Allah.
[21:22]Ya Allah, I ask you to not burden my nation like you
[21:28]burden the previous nations, bani is, the Jews, the Christians, all those
[21:34]nations.
[21:34]You burden them with difficult laws.
[21:37]I ask you, ya Allah, to make the religion of my ummah
[21:40]easier.
[21:41]There's a few things that the prophet asked.
[21:44]One of them, according to these commentators, ya Allah, please make fasting
[21:49]easier because this is too difficult.
[21:52]If someone sleeps, they can't eat anymore.
[21:52]And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala told him for you Allah, I will
[21:59]do it for you.
[22:02]So in this way, Allahawel shows us the of Allah that look
[22:06]at how dearasool Allah is for Allah.
[22:10]In honor of Allah, Allahawel made the easier for us.
[22:16]Be appreciative of Allah.
[22:18]Be appreciative of Islam and be appreciative of suhamma.
[22:22]Brothers and sisters, it's because of Allah's selflessness and love for his
[22:27]um that Allah subhana wa ta'ala made fasting easier.
[22:31]Now that we understand this portion, let's go to the second portion
[22:35]of our discussion.
[22:38]We said that in this verse, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has two
[22:42]discussions.
[22:43]The first is the struggles of the previous nations and we spoke
[22:46]about that and how he abrogated he changed the laws of fasting
[22:49]made it easier.
[22:52]The second portion of this verse is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala telling
[22:56]us some of the laws of fasting and particularly this verse addresses
[23:01]when fasting starts and when fasting ends.
[23:05]Today you see there's a lot of controversy a lot of questions
[23:11]when do we start fasting?
[23:11]It's not a very simple answer, a straightforward answer.
[23:17]You find some people they stop eating, they start fasting when it's
[23:21]time, other people when it's in time.
[23:24]Which one is it?
[23:24]Is it?
[23:25]Is it?
[23:26]Why do we have to?
[23:27]Some people are confused.
[23:30]And likewise, when it comes to the end of fasting, when can
[23:33]we break our fast?
[23:36]You find that some Muslims, they break their fast at sunset.
[23:39]Sunset is something you can Google.
[23:41]Google Dearbornne height sunset.
[23:42]It will tell you by the minute.
[23:46]For example, it's 7:55 on this day.
[23:48]And that's when the actual disc of the sun, it sets, it
[23:52]goes below the horizon.
[23:55]But you find that other Muslims, the majority of Shia, right, the
[24:01]majority of the Shia, no, they do not fast when they do
[24:03]not break their fast when it's sunset.
[24:06]The majority of Shia, what they do is they wait an extra
[24:12]10, 15, sometimes 20 minutes.
[24:12]Correct?
[24:13]And then there's some confusion sometimes when you're at those dinners.
[24:17]There's Sunni people, the Shia people.
[24:19]The Sunnis are eating for 15 minutes and you just have to
[24:21]watch while you drool, right?
[24:24]And then after 15 minutes, they finish all the good food and
[24:27]you're left with the leftovers and you haven't even started your yet.
[24:29]So what go what's going on?
[24:31]Why do I have to wait an extra 15 minutes?
[24:33]Why can't I eat with them?
[24:35]This verse in the holy Quran, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala addresses both.
[24:44]He addresses whenar begins, when fasting begins, and when fasting ends.
[24:48]It's very clear, brothers and sisters.
[24:50]Sometimes we don't look at the Quran clearly and we create confusion
[24:55]for ourselves.
[24:57]Allah subhana wa ta'ala says this, As for the beginning of fasting,
[25:11]Allah subhana wa ta'ala says, "I'll tell you the sign.
[25:13]I'll tell you when you start fasting." The Quran says it in
[25:18]this way.
[25:17]The Quran says you can eat and drink at night until So
[25:22]when do you stop eating and drinking?
[25:24]When does fasting start?
[25:25]until the white thread becomes clear and distinct from the black thread
[25:34]of what does this mean the white thread from the black thread
[25:39]of it's a little confusing right now this is a metaphor it's
[25:45]a figure of speech when the verse was revealed our traditions tell
[25:48]us some companions of Allah were also confused they misunderstood this verse
[25:53]they thought this was it meant literally threat thread.
[25:55]So what did some of the companions do?
[25:57]They went and they took a black thread and a white thread
[26:02]and they put it under their pillow.
[26:04]They would eat eat and then every couple of minutes they would
[26:06]look at the white and black thread.
[26:07]They're waiting for a sign for fud to happen under their pillow.
[26:13]They put them together like I don't see fudger.
[26:14]What's going on?
[26:16]The Quran said that when you see the white thread from the
[26:19]black thread, this is when it's kept on looking at the black
[26:24]and white.
[26:23]Nothing happened.
[26:24]So they went to they complained Allah what's going on we could
[26:28]not see Allah says where were you looking he says I was
[26:32]looking under my pillow says under your pillow what's wrong with you
[26:36]maybe this is a metaphor this is a figure of speech do
[26:41]not look under your pillow look at the sky the horizon when
[26:45]Allah says white thread what does that mean that means the light
[26:49]of dawn on the horizon when Allah says black thread.
[26:55]He means the darkness of night.
[26:57]So you look at the horizon and the horizon the sky is
[27:06]all black.
[27:04]It's dark.
[27:06]All the sudden you see like like a thread a very thin
[27:13]and dim horizontal line on the horizon.
[27:16]It's a very dim light.
[27:17]When you see that light that looks like a piece of white
[27:24]thread next to blackness of this of the night.
[27:25]When you see that dim light of dawn, this is when starts.
[27:34]When you see that light, you pray and you have to stop
[27:41]eating and drinking.
[27:40]This is when your fasting starts.
[27:44]Now, usually this happens about an hour and a half.
[27:49]Usually an hour and a half before sunrise.
[27:52]Now, can we see this brothers and sisters?
[27:55]Allah subhana t says this is a sign that everyone can see
[27:58]just like sunset, right?
[28:00]You can easily tell sunset just by going and looking at the
[28:03]horizon.
[28:04]Yes, this is a sign that everyone should be able to see.
[28:07]But the problem is because our cities have so much light today
[28:14]and that light is so dim when you look at the horizon
[28:16]at time it's very difficult for you to see it in the
[28:22]city.
[28:23]The only time you will be able to see that light is
[28:26]if you leave the city you go to a remote area in
[28:27]a desert in a forest or you go on the sea you
[28:32]can see the horizon you will see that dim light.
[28:35]You can even see on YouTube individuals who've went and they have
[28:39]footage of it.
[28:41]It's very dim.
[28:40]It's horizontal.
[28:41]You could see that light and then it starts to slowly slowly
[28:45]slowly expand until the sun rises.
[28:48]This brothers and sisters is called this is when starts your fasting
[28:55]starts and you pray.
[28:58]Now in astronomical terms, some believe that it's either the nautical twilight
[29:07]or the astronomical twilight because there's two notions in astronomy, right, that
[29:13]speak about that light.
[29:13]Some might believe the Allah subhana wa ta spoke about in the
[29:19]Quran that begins your fasting and salah is either the nautical twilight
[29:22]or the astronomical twilight or it could be right in between those
[29:26]two.
[29:27]The point is this is when someone starts their so Allah subhanahu
[29:31]wa ta'ala makes it clear that is whenever you see that light.
[29:36]Now when you look at our timets for salah times especially for
[29:44]the month of Ramadan you see two columns one says the other
[29:49]says Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in this verse you can eat
[29:53]and drink until and he tells us what the sign of is
[29:57]so where does the notion of ims come from?
[30:01]Now imsac brothers and sisters has not been directly mentioned in any
[30:06]hadith.
[30:06]It has not been mentioned and the word is not found in
[30:12]the hadith because means to stop eating comes from the notion of
[30:17]you have to take precautionary steps to be on the safe side.
[30:22]So is usually 10 15 minutes before correct.
[30:27]So it's kind of like a recommended precautionary buffer.
[30:32]You stop eating so you are sure that when the fud starts
[30:39]that light appears you're not accidentally eating.
[30:40]So you're taking a couple of minutes of what of precautionary measures.
[30:47]Now why do we do that?
[30:49]We do that brothers and sisters because the time that you find
[30:52]on these pieces of paper on these timets for salah the times
[30:58]that you find for are not 100% accurate.
[31:03]They're estimates and they have a margin of error.
[31:05]That margin of error can be 5 minutes, can be 8 minutes,
[31:10]can be 10 minutes, can be 15 minutes, whatever it is.
[31:12]So in order for us to what?
[31:16]in order for us for to accommodate for that margin of error
[31:19]then I stop eating 10 15 minutes before just in case because
[31:26]I cannot fully fully rely on this time.
[31:27]However, if you were someone who wants to go and find search
[31:32]for the hunt the you want to go to a remote area
[31:36]you can eat and drink until you see that line as long
[31:40]as you didn't see that light you can eat.
[31:41]That's exactly what the verse says.
[31:45]eat and drink until you see the until you see the dawn
[31:50]of but because we don't know and these are estimates this is
[31:53]where we have to do but you do not have to do
[31:57]brothers and sisters that's why I recommend some brothers from time to
[32:01]time they would go brothers and sisters they would go to you
[32:06]know like a a remote area go to the lake lake Euron
[32:10]or wherever you know it's there's not too much light and try
[32:13]to monitor take your binoculars and try to monitor when fed is.
[32:16]So look at the horizon.
[32:19]You have to look at what which side does the sun rise
[32:22]from?
[32:23]East or west?
[32:25]Huh?
[32:26]Come on.
[32:29]East or west?
[32:29]Are you sure?
[32:31]Yes, it's east.
[32:31]Okay.
[32:32]So the sun rises from the east.
[32:36]So you have to look at the eastern horizon.
[32:37]And approximately whenever those timetables tables say it's fudger time, go 20,
[32:43]30 minutes before and look.
[32:45]And then you can record.
[32:46]Do it three times.
[32:46]Do it four times until you yourself understand when is and we
[32:51]don't need to be so confused about.
[32:54]If we do that, we no longer need the anymore.
[32:58]But however there is a hadith where from this hadith we can
[33:01]extract the notion of him.
[33:04]It did kind of exist during the time of Allah even though
[33:07]it was not intentional.
[33:08]There's a hadith narrated from one of the imams.
[33:12]He says during the time of Allah there used to be two
[33:19]adans before fud.
[33:18]In the month of Ramadan there used to be two adans.
[33:24]The first adan was the adan of a man by the name
[33:29]of Iben Maktum, the son of Maktum.
[33:31]This man would come out and do the adan for the but
[33:36]the hadith says he was blind.
[33:37]So if you're blind, how are you going to see that white
[33:42]light?
[33:42]He probably just try to tried to guess it.
[33:43]So he was usually off the real adan, the real fud.
[33:48]He was always doing adan before the real adan before maybe 10
[33:52]minutes, 15, 20 minutes.
[33:55]And then when it was time, Bal would actually be what?
[33:57]On the lookout.
[33:59]He would be looking he would be looking at the horizon.
[34:02]Once he sees it, he goes and he does.
[34:04]So the people of Medina were confused.
[34:07]What is this?
[34:08]There's two adans.
[34:08]The prophet didn't want to put this person down.
[34:12]He's blind.
[34:13]So the prophet came and he said look you can eat until
[34:16]you hear the adan of bilal the first one let it be
[34:21]like a warning time is running out go drink water go eat
[34:23]those that you know final bite and try to you know um
[34:28]save for the next day try to make sure that you're well
[34:32]dehydrated whatever you need to eat but the first adan doesn't really
[34:37]signify anything it's the second adan so the adan of um was
[34:41]kind of like the do you have to stop eating when it's
[34:45]ims time?
[34:47]No.
[34:47]Just consider it like a warning.
[34:48]Allah you know you're you have a few minutes and then you
[34:53]have to definitely stop eating because sometimes we forget we get carried
[34:56]away all of the sudden you're eating your mouth is full and
[34:58]you see it's it's what it's time.
[35:00]What do you do?
[35:02]Do I spit it?
[35:03]I wanted to drink water after.
[35:04]Imagine you just ate an entire chocolate bar.
[35:07]Then you wanted to drink your cold water but all of a
[35:09]sudden you notice time and now you have to you have to
[35:14]live with that pain until right.
[35:14]So be careful those last couple of minutes pay attention to the
[35:19]time.
[35:20]So the adan oft serve that purpose lets serve that purpose as
[35:26]well.
[35:26]But do you have to follow the you have to stop?
[35:29]No.
[35:30]This is recommended.
[35:32]This is so when it comes to it's clear this is when
[35:37]fasting starts we understand what the sign of is and we understand
[35:40]why we have correct if this is clear.
[35:45]Alhamdulillah.
[35:48]And finally when does fasting end?
[35:52]Here once again we said we find different opinions.
[35:54]Sunset 15 minutes after sunset 10 minutes 20 minutes after sunset.
[36:01]What does the Quran say?
[36:02]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala after that after he says that you can
[36:04]eat and drink until you see the white thread from the black
[36:10]thread of dawn.
[36:10]He says he says and then continue to fast until nighttime starts.
[36:24]Now, most of Shia scholars, brothers and sisters, they say that when
[36:35]it's sunset, it's problematic for us to break our fast.
[36:37]Why?
[36:38]Because I want you to try it tomorrow night, the day after.
[36:43]When it's sunset, exactly as the sun sets, look at the sky.
[36:46]Is it night?
[36:49]It's too bright for it to be called night.
[36:53]The Quran says, "Continue your fast until it's night time." When it's
[36:56]night time, this is the exact word of Allah.
[36:58]You break your fast when it's le when the sun sets.
[37:04]Is it le?
[37:07]It's very bright.
[37:06]It's still too much light.
[37:10]So that's why scholars, the majority of Shia scholars, they tell you,
[37:15]"No, wait a few minutes after that.
[37:17]Let the sky get dimmer, darker, then eat.
[37:21]The question is how much do I wait?
[37:23]Do I wait 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15, 20 minutes?
[37:24]How darker does it have to get?
[37:27]Well, they tell you we have traditions from the they told us
[37:32]how long we have to wait.
[37:34]Not in terms of minutes, but they gave us a sign.
[37:38]A sign in the sky.
[37:38]When you see that sign in the sky, this is the And
[37:42]the imams of B in numerous hadiths, they would indicate that the
[37:46]sign for meaning and breaking your fast is not the sunset, but
[37:55]whenever the eastern redness disappears.
[38:00]Now, what does the eastern redness mean?
[38:04]Pay attention, please, just for one minute.
[38:07]So let's say you're looking at the horizon.
[38:10]This is the west side here.
[38:11]The sun has just set right on the west.
[38:14]Correct?
[38:15]Or is it on the east?
[38:17]Trying to confuse you again.
[38:20]It's on the west.
[38:20]The sun sets on the west side.
[38:22]So you look at the western horizon, you find it's still very
[38:26]bright.
[38:27]All this redness.
[38:30]Look on the opposite side, the east.
[38:33]Look at the sky.
[38:34]It will not be as bright as the western side because that's
[38:39]where the sun set.
[38:40]This is farther away.
[38:43]So look at the eastern sky from the horizon until above your
[38:46]head.
[38:47]You will find a redness.
[38:48]Try it.
[38:49]You will see it.
[38:50]It's not that complicated.
[38:51]All you need, brothers and sisters, is your eyes.
[38:52]Wall.
[38:53]Nothing else.
[38:54]You look from the horizon until top of your head.
[38:59]You will see redness.
[38:59]Sometimes it's kind of like orange, pink, but the point is you
[39:06]see it at sunset and then monitor it.
[39:09]You will see slowly that redness starts to disappear.
[39:11]Whenever all of the redness disappears from the horizon on the east
[39:16]side, not on the west side, west side will take longer.
[39:21]Whenever it disappears completely on the east side, this is when it's
[39:28]time to break your I personally once remember couple of years ago.
[39:32]I tried it myself, right?
[39:33]It's a little more difficult to try it yourself is easy.
[39:36]Just go in an area where you can see the horizon.
[39:40]So I was st sitting in the car looking at the horizon.
[39:42]So the sun sat on the west.
[39:46]At least I remember it sat on the west.
[39:46]Inshallah it did.
[39:48]And then I was looking on the at the east.
[39:51]I saw that redness.
[39:51]I was paying attention.
[39:53]I saw the redness.
[39:53]And I noticed slowly slowly it started to go away.
[39:57]I counted 5 minutes.
[39:57]I counted 15 minutes.
[40:00]I counted 16 minutes.
[40:01]It's still there.
[40:03]17 minutes, it's still there.
[40:04]18 minutes, it's still there.
[40:05]19 minutes, it's still there.
[40:09]It took almost 20 minutes for the redness on the eastern horizon
[40:14]to completely disappear.
[40:13]Dissipate.
[40:14]So, as soon as that disappeared, I knew this is the time.
[40:18]It wasn't during the month of Ramadan.
[40:20]But if if I was fasting, that's when I break my fast.
[40:24]Now, does it mean it's always 20 minutes?
[40:27]Absolutely not.
[40:26]It completely depends on your location.
[40:29]It depends on the weather.
[40:32]It depends on the season.
[40:32]I tried it another time in Florida.
[40:35]Don't ask me why I was in Florida.
[40:37]I talked about that next next year, inshallah.
[40:41]Anyway, I was looking at the horizon, right?
[40:45]And I noticed that the redness took 12 minutes to go.
[40:48]It's another reason why maybe living in No, stay stay in Dearbornne,
[40:54]right?
[40:53]12 minutes in Florida.
[40:56]Here it took up to 19 or 20 minutes.
[40:59]And I've heard other people try it.
[41:01]They say it depends on the season.
[41:03]Different seasons you'll get different amount.
[41:05]It just completely depends on some, you know, some circumstances of the
[41:10]of the of the atmosphere and and weather and whatnot.
[41:13]So on average you will find that it will take on average
[41:16]depending on your city your location 10 to 20 minutes.
[41:21]But why do we wait that extra when you're sitting frustrated seeing
[41:25]your sunni friend eating and you're grumpy?
[41:27]Why brothers and sisters remind yourself Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in
[41:32]the Holy Quran fast until it's night at sunset it's not called
[41:42]night.
[41:42]It's too dim.
[41:42]It's too it's too bright.
[41:45]You have to wait longer.
[41:46]And the ims of numerous hadith.
[41:50]There's one narrates a hadith from imam.
[41:54]He was asked by his companion.
[41:56]How long do I wait until I eat until I break myar?
[42:00]He was asking aboutar.
[42:00]The imam told him exactly this.
[42:02]He said look at the horizon the eastern side.
[42:06]Whenever the redness disappears from the eastern side this is when you
[42:10]can break yourar.
[42:11]This is when you can have yourar and break your fast.
[42:13]And that's why you find the majority of our they tell you
[42:19]that is not at sunset.
[42:20]Do not break your fast at sunset.
[42:24]Do not pray at sunset.
[42:25]You have to wait those extra minutes 15 16 17 whatever it
[42:29]is.
[42:28]You can either go and try to figure out yourself or just
[42:33]wait see what's recommended on these timets and eat.
[42:36]Now having said this brothers and sisters we have to also understand
[42:42]that some their opinion their scholarly opinion is that no starts at
[42:47]sunset.
[42:48]So they have their own reasoning they have their own arguments that
[42:52]their opinion is exactly like the opinion of mainstream Sunni Islam.
[42:57]They will bring you certain aith from and they will tell you
[43:00]that at the same time they said redness of the sky Easter
[43:07]they also said sunset.
[43:07]So that's why our scholars they say that there is somewhat of
[43:14]a conflict between the traditions.
[43:16]We see some traditions from the imams telling us sunset.
[43:20]Some traditions from the imams telling us that no do not break
[43:24]your fast at sunset.
[43:24]Wait those extra minutes.
[43:27]What do we do here?
[43:28]The imams themselves, subhan Allah, they told us any time they taught
[43:31]us this law.
[43:32]You have two traditions that are conflicting each other and they're both
[43:36]s meaning the narrators are all honest.
[43:38]So no one is lying.
[43:38]So how could the imam give contradicting answers?
[43:43]The imams they gave us a rule.
[43:45]They told us that sometimes we imams of we will have to
[43:54]speak under meaning the imams lived at a time where the government
[43:58]was intolerant.
[44:00]If they heard the imam giving his fatwa and it was different
[44:03]than the opinion of the government, the imam would be in trouble.
[44:08]His shia would be in trouble.
[44:10]We have numerous examples and I gave an entire lecture once about
[44:15]and how it was so difficult upon the imams to even teach
[44:18]the to their when they were constantly being monitored and the governments
[44:22]did not like them teaching anything contrary to what they believed.
[44:27]We believe is sunset if the imam says anything different he can
[44:32]get in trouble and his sh can get in trouble.
[44:35]So sometimes the imam under he would be asked they're spies he
[44:39]would have to say sun is sunset.
[44:41]So anyway, the imams themselves they say numerous hadith at any time
[44:47]you have two conflicting hadiths you have to work as a detective
[44:50]and try to find which one is closer to the truth and
[44:55]they tell us one sign one way to know is how which
[45:01]hadith is similar to the opinion of mainstream Sunnis.
[45:07]That hadith is most likely was most likely said under so take
[45:13]the other hadith.
[45:15]So many of our scholars they have said today we have these
[45:18]two groups of hadiths sunset the eastern redness there's a conflict here
[45:23]okay could the imam have been doing yes because what is the
[45:29]mainstream sunni opinion sunset almost all sunn say sunset so it's possible
[45:35]in those hadith the imam said sunset because of and that's why
[45:39]they say we have to give preference to the hadith that speak
[45:42]about the eastern the eastern redness and finally I'll end my lecture
[45:49]with this there is a hadith brothers and sisters in Bkari and
[45:51]Muslim that can also support the mainstream Shia opinion that is not
[46:00]sunset it's after that there's a hadith 1954 1954 in Bkari the
[46:08]hadith says that the prophet came out one day and he wanted
[46:11]to explain to the people when they can break their fast.
[46:16]So the it's a very concise hadith.
[46:19]It's narrated by Omar.
[46:20]Omar says the prophet came out and he says he says if
[46:29]night leaves from this side and if the if day leaves from
[46:35]this side and night comes from this side this is when you
[46:37]can break your fast.
[46:38]Let me read you the exact hadith and I'll quickly explain it.
[46:41]So the hadith we said 1954 of Bkari correct where is it
[46:50]Muhammad just one second we'll find it inshallah you can't run nor
[47:00]can you hide anyway so I I thought I had written it
[47:05]but it's hadith 1954 of Bkari okay I found The prophet in
[47:24]this hadith gives the law when to break the fast.
[47:29]The prophet didn't say when the sun sets.
[47:32]He added another condition.
[47:33]He said according to this hadith when the day disappears from this
[47:37]side.
[47:38]And he pointed towards the west side.
[47:40]What happens on the west side?
[47:41]The sun sets.
[47:43]So when he said when the day disappears on this side, meaning
[47:46]when the sun sets and then he said something else has to
[47:51]happen and then he pointed towards the east side and when night
[47:55]starts or comes from this side.
[47:58]When night starts on the eastern side, brothers and sisters, what does
[48:02]that mean?
[48:04]That means that when the eastern side becomes dark or else if
[48:10]it was enough for the sun to set and you can eat.
[48:13]The prophet said look at the west side when the sun sets
[48:15]eat.
[48:16]He said no when the sun sets on that side and darkness
[48:19]falls on that side.
[48:22]That means if there is still redness in the sky you cannot
[48:24]eat.
[48:25]So he put two conditions sunset and night on the eastern side.
[48:30]And we said when it's when it's sunset, it's still not dark
[48:36]on that side.
[48:38]This is a hadith in Bkari.
[48:39]It is and it's very clear brothers and sisters that when it's
[48:42]sunset, it's still not dark on the left side.
[48:45]It's not dark on the eastern side.
[48:46]So wait until you see the darkness, the redness goes and the
[48:50]darkness comes.
[48:51]And we said the Quran is very clear and continue your fasting
