[1:47][Music] foreign [Music] why [Music] [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
[4:12]is [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you
[6:15]again everyone for joining us for tonight's friday night program presented to
[6:19]you by the muslim youth connection i'll make a couple announcements before
[6:23]we begin our program insha'allah first off please remember to keep your
[6:26]face masks on throughout the whole program and try to sit on
[6:32]a piece of tape so we could maintain proper social distancing remember
[6:36]to follow us on social media at myc media to stay updated
[6:40]on all our programs our program today will uh will be about
[6:44]choosing your career path they will go it will uh proceed in
[6:49]the following way first you will have introductions from hajj al-mohani and
[6:55]hajj sam about their decisions in choosing a career path and their
[6:57]background and all that and then insha allah will pass no cards
[7:01]around together questions that any of you guys have mohammed and if
[7:07]we could please have our almost come up to the podium s
[7:51][Music] okay thank you all for coming thank you all for joining
[7:57]us today so i'm going to start with hajjali to my right
[8:02]over here please give us a summary of what you do for
[8:06]a living and what led you to that career path one of
[8:19]the things i love about ahmad is he's he's a go-getter he
[8:22]doesn't wait all right and i'm learning from him a lot any
[8:26]interaction i have with him like last time for example i was
[8:30]running late to the program and he called me about five times
[8:35]like hajj where are you i'm i'm exaggerating gary you know he
[8:38]just called me like i think once and texted me politely um
[8:44]all right so what should we go into yes first of all
[9:12]thank you to the myc and the iia for hosting this program
[9:15]and for inviting us to share from our experiences our thoughts our
[9:21]ideas and hopefully this will be an interesting conversation and a relatable
[9:28]conversation to everyone um professionally i'm a legal practitioner and what that
[9:33]means is i i'm an attorney right a lot of my clients
[9:36]look at me as legal counsel and and the fact of that
[9:41]is most of the cases and the matters i deal with are
[9:42]business in nature so most of my clients are businesses companies ngos
[9:50]non-government organizations entrepreneurs dealing with their challenges in business and how to
[9:58]make sure that they're protecting their business interests from a to z
[10:03]so it could be a young aspiring entrepreneur who wants to start
[10:07]their own business it could be online could be a physical storefront
[10:11]could be anything could be something that they're doing domestically in the
[10:14]united states only within the state of michigan could be across state
[10:18]lines it could be internationally and then what we do as legal
[10:23]business council as we guide them throughout that whole process we make
[10:26]sure that they are given the tools and the mechanisms the knowledge
[10:30]and education so that they make the right decisions how many of
[10:34]you know a small business from your family or community in general
[10:38]how many of you know a small business beautiful small businesses are
[10:44]the cornerstone of america right i grew up in a small business
[10:49]my father was able to establish a small business my grandfather my
[10:55]grandfathers they raised their children with the aspiration of having their kids
[10:59]have the ability to open up their own businesses right even if
[11:03]they may not have been able to do that they were able
[11:06]to see that dream lived out through uh their children right so
[11:10]from my perspective as one who when i pursued my education academically
[11:15]i got a bachelor's degree in political science and uh and a
[11:21]minor in psychology then i went on to do my juris doctorate
[11:23]my jd which is the the professional doctorate degree that you need
[11:28]to get in order to practice law and then i became a
[11:33]licensed attorney so within that that field so many different opportunities so
[11:36]many things that you can do i'd also love to inshallah through
[11:41]the questions and through the discussion we'll get into even non-traditional things
[11:45]that you can do throughout your education throughout your career right and
[11:51]not necessarily looking at things as a job it's funny uh earlier
[11:56]today i had a meeting with one of my teams outside of
[12:02]my legal practice with one of my teams that i'm working on
[12:05]a research project with and one of the team members was like
[12:09]jalal don't you have a job i don't know i don't have
[12:14]a job i have many responsibilities right and the approach with that
[12:20]the mindset that you have and looking at the things that you
[12:24]do instead of looking at it as i have a nine to
[12:25]five or i have a job that i'm reporting to a certain
[12:29]company or business which there's nothing wrong with that the mindset that
[12:32]you carry into in getting your education in pursuing a career in
[12:39]pursuing projects in servicing people that itself is so important in whatever
[12:43]direction you want to take the mindset the mentality and that being
[12:49]driven by a certain purpose insha'allah later in the discussion we'll we'll
[12:53]get into that thank you okay as we saw i'm over to
[12:59]you well first of all again as jalal iterated thank you guys
[13:07]for having us it's a pleasure to be here alhamdulillah um i
[13:10]love this man this man is like my brother so just to
[13:13]be on stage or me make sure you're clear on that no
[13:17]both of them but in terms of jalal i've known him for
[13:22]a long time i'm very proud of what he's done i think
[13:25]jalad's really stepped into the forefront of of leadership and this is
[13:29]what you guys need to kind of understand it's not us being
[13:33]up here it's who is going to come up here next that's
[13:37]the key it's not about us it's about you so who wants
[13:43]to take the stage who wants to step up and not because
[13:46]of the stage because you it's a platform no do you have
[13:50]the courage the strength the ability to go against yourself to that
[13:54]degree so you can rise and take on challenges and responsibility at
[13:58]a greater level that's what it's really about so we're up here
[14:02]for that we're not up here trying to create something for ourselves
[14:09]alhamdulillah we both made it on certain levels but at the end
[14:12]of the day we made it because other people put their backs
[14:16]on the line other people really put their backs into what we've
[14:23]done they've trained us at a high high level not because of
[14:25]what we have done because of what they did so we're trying
[14:29]to do the same thing so in the beginning i'll just say
[14:34]this i want to share something with you this is from this
[14:36]this notebook is from 2005 and i think it's from 2002 what
[14:44]was written so i had a dream my mom passed away around
[14:49]five six months ago she came to me in a dream and
[14:53]she was in my shoes came from my left and there was
[14:57]a room that i'm always in front of and that room she
[15:04]had literally set up all my books inside that room and i'm
[15:08]looking at it and i look she's coming from my left and
[15:12]i was so happy to see her because the dream was so
[15:16]vivid and i felt the emotion i didn't want to wake up
[15:21]but when i saw i looked into the room there was a
[15:24]particular point there was a particular place i never thought much of
[15:30]it until a couple days later i said to myself i said
[15:34]why don't i go see where i was looking at and i
[15:41]did that so i went downstairs and i just i was running
[15:47]down when they when like it hit me then i said to
[15:50]myself i picked up three notebooks like this and this was the
[15:55]first one i opened up and when i opened it up here's
[16:01]what i saw inside of it okay i want you to see
[16:04]that can anybody see that everybody see that raise your hand if
[16:08]you can see it okay so when i picked this up these
[16:16]are 16 goals that i had written that i totally forgotten about
[16:25]now i'm gonna read two of them for you number one number
[16:44]12 states i will get over my fear of speaking that that
[16:51]one i will become a motivational speaker for allah i just want
[17:03]you to think about those that's from way back then so you
[17:07]know what i did after i did that i opened up the
[17:11]back of the book and i'm gonna write another 16 new goals
[17:17]for myself so if you are afraid of something i was terrified
[17:22]of speaking i didn't want to speak i never thought i'd be
[17:27]a motivational speaker per se but at the end of the day
[17:34]i ended up there subhan allah what drives you there so the
[17:42]first thing i would tell you put it down on paper just
[17:47]give that thought give it birth in the outside world by just
[17:55]writing it down that's what i would tell you so go home
[17:59]tonight and just write down some things that you believe you want
[18:05]to attain in this life and with the deepest part of your
[18:10]heart right from there let your heart talk my heart was very
[18:19]innocent back then i didn't know anything about speaking i didn't know
[18:25]much about it but subhanallah that's what happens so i would tell
[18:30]you that's number one number two i would tell you this you
[18:35]are a peace and a puzzle find where you fit in the
[18:46]human puzzle that's your own uniqueness can you take one piece of
[18:52]the puzzle and put it somewhere else have you ever tried to
[18:55]do that you know how it looks all weird that doesn't fit
[18:59]it doesn't fit right that's how you are allah azzawajal has programmed
[19:04]you that way you are your own universe in that universe find
[19:12]your talent that talent is like a pinhole it's literally like a
[19:14]pinhole in the whole universe it's on the inside though it's not
[19:19]on the outside and if you find it and dump all your
[19:22]time energy and space into it know what happens you become more
[19:27]rare and when you become more rare you become more expensive so
[19:35]i would just starting off i would just tell you those things
[19:38]write it down find out what you're genetically encoded for what are
[19:44]your talents and when you do dump all your time into it
[19:47]don't be afraid don't be afraid of money don't be afraid of
[19:53]anything like that just that journey to the inside is the most
[19:57]beautiful thing you could take so thank you thank you so much
[20:07]okay now for the interactive portion i think note cards were passed
[20:12]around to where you could write your questions down on them uh
[20:17]if you didn't write one write a question down yet we could
[20:19]start just taking questions from the audience from volunteers for either of
[20:23]these two gentlemen so please if anyone has a question we'll start
[20:30]with that right there so i'm going to go to a conversation
[20:49]that has had a very long time ago and hajj i think
[20:56]you can remind me the narration from amir al-mu'min about when you
[21:02]fear something to dive right in when it comes to fear any
[21:08]phobia you may have any fear anxieties that you have to address
[21:15]them head on avoidance is usually not a solution and hajj sam
[21:21]can touch a little bit more on this from the psychological aspect
[21:25]but we're here to face challenges we need to constantly remind ourselves
[21:34]as human beings why are we here so we're going to go
[21:40]really deep real quick and i'm glad from from hajj's presentation right
[21:44]from the get-go i was answering ahmad's question i was just trying
[21:47]to be like just i just went straight in he was like
[21:50]listen what are your goals what are you trying to do have
[21:54]you accomplished the goals that you set for yourself let's say 10
[21:57]15 years ago right or are you still dealing with the same
[22:01]anxieties and the fears that are stopping you from accomplishing your goals
[22:05]and this applies to all of us no matter how young or
[22:08]old you are you can be that young kid that still hasn't
[22:11]ridden a bicycle without training wheels you can be that kid that
[22:16]still doesn't know how to swim you can be that adult that
[22:17]still doesn't know how to swim and it's okay it's never too
[22:21]late to learn it's never too late to learn and usually when
[22:26]it comes to fear and the anxieties that we have it's learning
[22:33]how much do you know about this so that you can overcome
[22:36]the anxiety amir al-mumin we fear what we do not know people
[22:46]fear what they do not know usually you're going to find that
[22:50]association that connection between i'm scared of something because i don't know
[22:55]enough about it or i don't know anything about it dive right
[23:01]in learn about it educate yourself expose yourself to it so that
[23:06]you can overcome that fear and anxiety yeah thank you ajiles so
[23:16]sister i would first ask you a few questions if you don't
[23:22]mind okay when you're talking about fear um is it a career
[23:27]is it something that because fear in general is a good thing
[23:33]it's not a bad thing it's just how we use the fear
[23:36]so i would ask you is it something that you're going towards
[23:42]a career is it because fear exists everywhere so would you answer
[23:47]that if it's not too personal if it's too personal just don't
[23:53]worry about it i'll move on okay so you're judging so you're
[24:02]judging yourself against a certain standard that you believe in in the
[24:05]future okay so that's a comparison okay so the first step i
[24:14]would tell you for fear to exist you must compare okay this
[24:18]thing is like it's like just hitting i don't know there's a
[24:22]lot of feedback but um maybe me i don't know just the
[24:24]way i'm hearing myself okay so i'm gonna give you some science
[24:30]first then i'm gonna give you some religion okay so the first
[24:35]thing is you just gotta understand that fear is a good thing
[24:37]it's not a bad thing a lot of us think fear is
[24:42]something negative fear makes you precautious hope makes you ambitious so you
[24:46]got to understand that it's a balance fear and hope are like
[24:50]two wings of a bird imam saw the imam states they're like
[24:55]two wings of a bird you need both of them to fly
[24:58]so don't misconstrue the idea that fear is bad it's not when
[25:04]you see fire you don't jump into it because there's fear of
[25:09]it so you have to learn that fear is a good thing
[25:11]it makes you precautious it makes you hold back when you need
[25:15]to and i'm sorry a lot of our youth now from what
[25:19]i'm seeing they don't fear enough there's nothing to hold you back
[25:27]there are fewer verses in the quran there are hope verses in
[25:32]the quran but regardless of the fact fear is not a bad
[25:34]thing it's a good thing now when we come up on a
[25:39]situation and you're talking about success in the future so i'm judging
[25:42]myself in the future i'm always creating a future character whatever my
[25:47]decisions are right now i'm sending the consequences to my future character
[25:52]that's what i'm doing so now whatever decisions i make now like
[25:59]when i put those goals i'm the one reaping right now from
[26:05]that person who was way back then do you understand what i'm
[26:09]saying because that person made that decision i had fear too sister
[26:13]i had that fear and it's obvious so what made me move
[26:19]past that fear as jalal stated so imam ali states if you
[26:23]fear something dive straight into it because the intensity of abstaining from
[26:27]it is greater than you moving towards it so what does that
[26:31]tell you that tell you that courage is engaged there you need
[26:35]to build courage there's two things i would tell you to build
[26:37]if you're gonna build anything build courage and build wisdom [Music] courage
[26:43]is needed when you move forward when the fear exists and it
[26:47]comes to you now i'm gonna tell you a little bit about
[26:51]let me go just a little bit into the science before it
[26:54]gets way too long okay so how does fear come about fear
[26:57]comes about when we face something that's a challenge it comes to
[27:02]us fear exists in your discomfort zone whatever you're comfortable in like
[27:07]right now i can say abcdefg hijkm i can go there's no
[27:14]fear but whenever i'm experiencing something new fear and hope exist i
[27:18]hope to make it but i fear i won't they exist in
[27:23]my discomfort zone some of us that we back off from fear
[27:27]and we retreat because the fear is too great but our abilities
[27:31]there we could do it but we just don't do it so
[27:34]science comes in and says whenever you have that fear here's what
[27:39]happens in your brain the brain has a particular part it's called
[27:43]the amygdala the amygdala is the fear center of the brain whenever
[27:47]you feel a threat it engages it turns on that system sub
[27:55]consciously sub consciously not underneath your conscious control okay now that is
[28:01]connected to something called the hypothalamus the hypothalamus is like the thermostat
[28:06]of your whole body and when that turns on and you actually
[28:12]feel the threat that engages and it dumps sugar into your bloodstream
[28:20]your heart rate increases you start breathing really heavy okay even speaking
[28:24]like coming up here and speaking how many of you could do
[28:28]that if i ask you right now to come up let me
[28:31]turn on that little amygdala in your brain right now if don't
[28:35]raise your hand because i'll call on you let me see who's
[28:41]got courage live demonstration raise your hand up high i don't want
[28:45]this oh you might see me but i look courageous but i'll
[28:50]walk away see there's a voice in your head that's playing with
[28:53]you now right now commit just commit right now and say you
[28:58]know what i'm going to go up i don't care what happens
[29:02]you know how you do that drop the outcome raise your hand
[29:05]if you will come up here oh see there's more confidence there's
[29:09]more confidence in your angle the way even you raised your hand
[29:13]up why because the challenge of fear starts up here it's what
[29:20]you tell yourself so now when you step up and you come
[29:26]up here and you start your voice starts cracking and you can't
[29:31]handle it and the pressure and everybody's looking at me what happens
[29:37]you might not like yourself afterwards but the amount of respect you
[29:44]just grew in is unbelievable towards yourself is this a sign that
[29:49]should just be quiet okay so that's that then i'll end with
[29:55]this and i don't want to make this into a lecture but
[29:58]number two there's the other side when you are when you have
[30:04]that fear and it's right in front of you and it's looking
[30:07]right you written dead in your eyes what do you do where
[30:12]do you build that courage where does it come from where you
[30:15]stand and you don't care you drop that outcome like i told
[30:21]you you don't care how do you build that kind of courage
[30:27]there's a beautiful imam ali salaam he says what are the sins
[30:50]that cause you to stop supplicating listen to this he says meaning
[31:03]that allah is not going to answer me that you will have
[31:10]certainty in your heart that allah is going to answer you when
[31:15]you do that imam ali imam sajah says that will stop your
[31:21]heart from supplicating you will not call to allah why because you
[31:25]lose that faith when fear enters your heart inject it with the
[31:32]hope of allah faith when you drop the outcome and you say
[31:40]allah it's on you it's yours my responsibility is in your hands
[31:47]it equalizes the heart you don't have too much fear you don't
[31:54]have too much hope you're right in the middle when you do
[31:58]that your heart is calm it's collected you enter the eye of
[32:07]the storm chaos is all around you but your heart is calm
[32:15]it's collected you want to find that space in your heart when
[32:20]you do that you will have wisdom to see what you need
[32:27]to see in that particular moment a lot of people will not
[32:31]be able to see because your heart is calm it's like the
[32:37]fireman who's going into the fire while everyone what is walking away
[32:42]it's not easy to get to that position but if you train
[32:47]your heart and you condition it properly like jalal stated i'll give
[32:55]you one final tip do this ten times a week ten times
[33:01]a week do it on small little decisions small little decisions every
[33:08]time you fear something in it fear injects itself into your heart
[33:12]just be aware of it that fear has just injected itself into
[33:18]my heart then just go against it whatever the decision is make
[33:24]make sure it's not high level responsibility decisions small little decisions it's
[33:30]something that you fear do it ten times a week every week
[33:33]and watch what happens after like three to six months in your
[33:38]own being what happens to your own heart this is conditioning fear
[33:42]is a monster because it creates doubt and doubt creates indecision and
[33:48]indecision creates pure confusion you don't know where to go so if
[33:56]it's too much it's a problem so do that and i think
[33:58]that will really help you i hope that answered your question sister
[34:02]i'm sorry if i took too long thank you please okay we
[34:12]now have our first set of note cards so i'll start with
[34:15]first question and this question is for both of you gentlemen what
[34:19]should i do if i can't figure out what my passion is
[34:28]so generally i like questions that are more directly from the audience
[34:35]because then i get to engage with the question a little bit
[34:39]more um sam can talk a little bit more about this on
[34:42]the psychology side again um when it comes to our conversations and
[34:46]i'm gonna relate this to passion because everything that we have in
[34:53]our existence and our being is connected to something right when we're
[34:58]communicating with one another you'll notice for example when we're sitting up
[35:03]on stage or when you're sitting in the audience and at any
[35:06]point in time it could be reversed right there could be a
[35:11]time where i'm sitting in the audience i'm sitting in the audience
[35:15]and we're listening to one of our respected audience members today when
[35:20]you look at communication communication is comprised of three primary areas and
[35:26]i want you to pay close attention to this because if you
[35:29]pick this one tip up you're going to be able to not
[35:32]only figure out your passion but you're also going to be able
[35:35]to see how you can pummel through challenges and recognize success everywhere
[35:40]you go because people are connected and everything is connected three components
[35:48]to communication there's your words your voice and your non-verbal communication the
[35:53]way you sit the way you stand right the way you open
[35:57]yourself up to people the non-verbal is a huge part can anyone
[36:03]tell me of those three parts words voice and nonverbal communication what
[36:10]percentage each one makes up because they're not one-third one-third one-third so
[36:17]of communication like right now when i'm communicating with everyone here today
[36:21]what percentage of my communication is the actual words that i'm using
[36:27]as i'm talking in these moments can anyone guess on a percentage
[36:35]50 body language close how about words what's the percentage of words
[36:47]15 words now forty percent not a verbal no come on seven
[37:07]percent words you want to know why most of us uh have
[37:13]uh arguments and debates and drama over text messages only seven percent
[37:19]of the communication is being offered through a text message see what
[37:22]i just did with my voice only seven percent of communication is
[37:25]being offered through a text message voice voice 38 non-verbal communication without
[37:34]my voice without the words 45 percent when you're looking at your
[37:44]passion you can't recognize your passion because you're not looking at the
[37:50]details i want you to look at the details i want you
[37:52]to monitor yourself i want you to think about the things you
[37:55]do and why you do them when you become more aware of
[38:02]yourself you're going to detect the passion you're going to see the
[38:06]passion the passion is going to be right in front of you
[38:09]but you have to reflect just this quick quick observation that we
[38:16]just had on communication how are you gonna take that with you
[38:21]tonight are you gonna start talking about really important things over text
[38:24]messages are you going to be acknowledged that people themselves the people
[38:30]that you're communicating with have their own passions have their own ambitions
[38:34]have their own sensitivities have their own things that you need to
[38:37]be considerate about when you become more aware of the way you
[38:43]do things the why you do things you're going to be also
[38:46]more aware of the way others do things and why they do
[38:50]things and they connect with one another the more aware we become
[38:56]the easier we can acknowledge where does our passion really lie once
[39:00]you're able to see passion and detect the passion in your life
[39:05]and see okay what am i really passionate about it's not by
[39:08]the way just enjoying what you do some people mistake passion to
[39:15]be oh i enjoy this i enjoy eating cake am i passionate
[39:17]about cake i mean i could be passionate about cake right i
[39:20]think you are i think i am well not cake maybe pizza
[39:25]right but you can be passionate about that but just because you
[39:29]enjoy or it feels good doesn't necessarily mean you're passionate about it
[39:33]go back to self-reflection go back to really taking a hard look
[39:38]at yourself and it's not by the way again and you're going
[39:41]to see this more through the conversation inshallah it's not like one
[39:43]of those things where you you look in the mirror one day
[39:46]you know you look in the mirror and you're like i'm gonna
[39:48]take a real hard look at myself and see what i'm made
[39:53]of it's a process it's an everyday thing it's not you wake
[40:00]up one day and things change we're all growing we're all moving
[40:06]and sometimes you may you may look and say i think i
[40:09]have my passion figured out and you work on that basis and
[40:12]then you'll start doubting yourself again it's okay but constantly pushing yourself
[40:19]to stay in that state of awareness and moving away from moving
[40:25]away from heedlessness forgetfulness and connecting yourself always to the root and
[40:33]the cause of all causes and the source of everything being what
[40:43]you connect yourself to the unlimited source oh you're gonna see passion
[40:48]oh you're gonna see passion like you've never seen before thank you
[40:54]same question what should i do if i can't figure out what
[41:00]my passion is okay so jalal i think answered it beautifully i
[41:05]think that's the core cause so but i'll answer a little detail
[41:10]in terms of the question the way pertaining to the question now
[41:12]i'm gonna ask the person who asked the question to have some
[41:18]courage and raise your hand ma sha blah it's okay now stand
[41:26]up it's you i can't believe it see it's hard to expose
[41:34]yourself now hattie would you mind coming up here no no i'm
[41:38]kidding i'm kidding see but he's see that that's beautiful he didn't
[41:41]it's like okay i'm ready you could say thank you see but
[41:49]that's beautiful that he can do that his heart is ready to
[41:55]be conditioned your heart has to be ready to be conditioned if
[41:58]you have an ego i'm sorry you won't find your passion i'm
[42:03]sorry that's the truth if you have something called ego expansion versus
[42:10]ego submission you won't find it submission is the key submission to
[42:15]the heart of the heart as jalal mentioned when the heart submits
[42:22]submits then you can find how you fit in the human puzzle
[42:25]so that's one point you have to suspend your ego because if
[42:32]you don't you think you know it all so there's no growth
[42:36]no one can teach you anything so what should you do suspend
[42:44]your ego find a mentor i'm giving you some practical reasoning find
[42:47]a mentor a mentor is someone who knows more than you they're
[42:53]wiser than you and they have a lot more experience than you
[42:56]that if they if you're let's say you're about to make a
[42:59]decision and you can't see in front of your face you ever
[43:04]been in a dark dark place where if you put your hand
[43:09]in front of your face you can't see sometimes when we're making
[43:13]decisions that's how we feel what a mentor comes in does they
[43:20]shine their flashlight of knowledge on the road that you're trying to
[43:25]pave so you can see then they'll use their wisdom to guide
[43:29]you wisdom is the application of knowledge they'll tell you turn right
[43:36]turn left it would have taken you sometimes it would take you
[43:38]sometimes let's say a thousand tries and they give it to you
[43:44]in one answer so you're expanding and you're moving quick find a
[43:49]good mentor number three whomenter by the way who mentored imam alayhi
[44:03]can we get some water please thank you so mentorship huge part
[44:13]of it thank you thank you sister thank you okay now third
[44:22]thing i would tell you is look a lot of us i'll
[44:27]just give you three quick things okay a lot of us when
[44:31]we're looking to know who we are and what our passions are
[44:33]do we look to the outsider to the inside be honest how
[44:38]many of you look to the outside most of us do psychology
[44:43]states that when we are growing up we appease the outside not
[44:48]the inside it takes a lot of courage to dive inward so
[44:51]you have two things i either compare who i am to other
[44:56]people or i go into self-discovery and i dig into my own
[44:59]self i look to the outside world i want to facebook the
[45:02]instagram tick tock like button that gives me what validation of who
[45:10]i am i like it i put on more makeup the shirts
[45:19]get tighter because i need that validation i need that security from
[45:25]the inside that means my security is from the outside not from
[45:30]the inside if you go towards discovery and stop comparing yourself and
[45:35]you say i'm my own maximum potential the only person i'm going
[45:41]to compare myself to is my future me and what character do
[45:46]i want to build now from there if you do that here's
[45:50]what happens you're going to get to points that you don't like
[45:57]about yourself you have a choice i either lie to myself or
[46:02]i tell myself the truth i'm brutally honest with myself you know
[46:09]what i put up that picture and i shouldn't have put it
[46:16]up this guy commented on it but i liked it i'm putting
[46:22]up my pictures and i'm putting up my chats and i just
[46:27]want to entice certain things by my physical appearance i have to
[46:33]be brutally honest with myself i shouldn't do that but it's too
[46:41]hard because that's where i get my validation from i have to
[46:44]cut up my i have to cut off my source so i
[46:47]have to become brutally honest i have to think to myself that
[46:52]every time i put up a picture i put up anything in
[46:56]that realm i'm putting it up on a billboard would you guys
[47:00]right now some of the pictures that you put up would you
[47:02]put them up on a billboard for everyone to see would you
[47:05]do that if you can do that i would i would follow
[47:12]you i swear to you i would follow you but to check
[47:19]yourself at that moment be brutally honest that's taking ownership the third
[47:27]level is take the responsibility that is yours don't allow anyone to
[47:31]take that responsibility from you don't number one is discovery go towards
[47:38]the inside don't compare yourself to others on the outside number two
[47:42]is justification versus honesty be brutally honest don't justify your answers to
[47:48]yourself when you do something wrong admit it to yourself don't lie
[47:53]to yourself and number three take responsibility for everything that happens to
[48:00]you everything from a to z don't blame the world take ownership
[48:04]of who you are the second you do that you become mature
[48:07]emotionally mature when anything happens do this take sixty percent of your
[48:13]responsibility even if you did nothing in your head take sixty percent
[48:21]of the responsibility say what did i do wrong if you can
[48:26]do that your passion is beneath that you will find it because
[48:32]there is beauty there's such beauty in your heart but you can't
[48:39]close it off if you were egotistical like i told you you
[48:43]will never see it if you go towards the inside so it's
[48:52]to the inside go to the inside then be brutally honest then
[48:58]from there if you can't be brutally honest get one of us
[49:01]to be brutally honest with you and trust me we will but
[49:06]not many of you can take a tongue lashing i'm sorry it's
[49:10]not easy to be criticized because the ego is right there man
[49:18]then third level is take responsibility don't blame the world some of
[49:23]us get to a point we blame allah why did you do
[49:28]this to me be careful those words you have no idea what
[49:34]you're saying so when you do that and you take that 60
[49:35]ownership then you're on your way to finding your passion i've found
[49:42]some of it i'm sure jalal has found some of it but
[49:45]both of us will tell you we're still on a journey as
[49:48]he mentioned but that journey when it grows here's the final point
[49:56]if you find something in your heart and you got to look
[50:04]for it it's not going to be just given to you emotions
[50:07]are earned they're not given how do they how are they earned
[50:13]through challenges when you are challenged you will earn that emotion find
[50:19]something in your heart that's worth more than your life i'm to
[50:25]repeat that find something in your heart that's worth more than your
[50:33]life then you will see the companions of who who who you
[50:43]see that that's passion and that's that submission that no matter what
[50:50]the challenge is that emotion in my heart will never anneal to
[50:54]anything it won't think of zainab when she stood in the court
[51:02]of yazid where's the fear we talk about women empowerment right you
[51:06]want to see women empowerment look at that if you can't see
[51:12]power there then check your pulse that's my hero your sisters don't
[51:21]want to follow her i'll follow her i'm a male and i'm
[51:24]more than willing to submit to what she did that power in
[51:31]the heart that passion has no gender that's iman so find that
[51:40]in your heart as brother jalal mentioned that submission to allah thank
[51:49]you ashrae salah please okay i lost my water there we go
[52:00]okay this next card has multiple questions start with the first one
[52:05]how do you manage your time or how should i manage my
[52:08]time are you asking me are you asking you time management is
[52:20]something that not only is talked about in personal development self-development uh
[52:25]business development books uh but there are books on time management right
[52:32]and um it's funny i remember again we'll always go back and
[52:40]forth and say you know when we were talking about this or
[52:43]when we had this alhamdulillah having that that brotherhood and having that
[52:48]ability where we've worked together we've lived together we've traveled together you
[52:53]know it's it's a true blessing um several years ago we learned
[53:03]this concept of you know quadrants on importance and urgency and depending
[53:09]if something is urgent and important urgent and unimportant important but not
[53:15]urgent and unimportant and unurgent that's how you would essentially break up
[53:21]the tasks of your day and the duties of your day right
[53:25]looking at what you need to get done now and how important
[53:29]it is and then ranking them but going back to the earlier
[53:33]point that i mentioned if you're not self-aware and you're just winging
[53:37]your day and just rolling out of bed then say goodbye to
[53:40]any chance of properly managing your time right how early are you
[53:45]waking up every single day and this is a challenge for me
[53:50]right subhanallah there's so many wisdoms behind our prayers but look at
[53:53]that prayer the first prayer of your day when it comes to
[53:56]salat al-fajr probably one of the greatest challenges depending on how we
[54:04]respond to that call being the call of our lord will also
[54:07]tell us how the rest of your day is going to happen
[54:11]how are you managing your time right how are you pushing away
[54:17]distractions how passionate are you about look how they're all connected how
[54:22]passionate are you about whatever it is that you're trying to do
[54:26]and definitely there's things during the day that you don't want to
[54:30]do i remember being an undergrad and not wanting to study for
[54:33]that exam or not wanting to write on write that paper and
[54:36]waiting to the last minute to write that paper all right and
[54:41]even if you pull it off and even if you got an
[54:42]a on that was that the best that you could do was
[54:46]that the best utilization of your time and you're like what do
[54:48]you mean i still got a i still graduated with honors i'll
[54:52]tell you for example my own experience and this is here me
[54:55]being vulnerable in front of all of you right sam talks about
[54:59]courage i'm not being courageous but i try to be frank and
[55:05]transparent so that my young brothers and sisters who i truly look
[55:08]at as family what's the point of me being here if you're
[55:11]not going to benefit from what i'm saying what's the point of
[55:14]me being here if you can't relate if you can't relate then
[55:16]i shouldn't be here right so hopefully with that perspective inshaallah allah
[55:21]accepts everything that we do whether we're speaking or we're listening again
[55:26]going back to your purpose your intention when i graduated from undergrad
[55:30]i graduated at the age of 19 my bachelors whipped out at
[55:36]that time i looked at it as like this is a big
[55:41]accomplishment but it wasn't the best i could do not time wise
[55:43]time was okay yeah 19 years old but how much did i
[55:48]take away from my education how much did i just wing things
[55:54]what'd you graduate with i graduated 3.6 and honors oh that's great
[55:57]no it wasn't because i knew i could do better because i
[56:00]knew the way i approached every single class now some classes i
[56:03]may have been a little bit more interested in some classes i
[56:07]may have showed a little bit more passion but the difference being
[56:12]is in the moment that you're in when you're present you're here
[56:15]right now right you're here you said you said this evening i'm
[56:19]going to go attend this lecture this program this presentation this discussion
[56:25]with hajj sam and angela right are you truly present here right
[56:31]now not just not physically is your heart here with us is
[56:36]your mind here with us and how do you show that whatever
[56:40]it is that you're doing when you're looking at your the management
[56:44]of your time not only can you schedule a day and keep
[56:48]a calendar but in everything that you're doing the challenge of the
[56:53]day is am i present in whatever it is that i'm supposed
[56:56]to be doing right now think about it like this when you
[57:00]are studying you're really studying you're not on snapchat when you're working
[57:06]on a project whether it's an employment or it's a project for
[57:11]school or it's a project with family you're present you're there you're
[57:15]doing that thing whether it's 15 minutes or five hours you're present
[57:22]you're there you're spending time with your family you're having dinner with
[57:26]your family be present put your phone on the put your phone
[57:29]aside we all need to practice this we all put your phone
[57:33]aside be present that's your time with the fan oh i want
[57:35]to take a picture i remember going on ziyarah um alhamdulillah multiple
[57:43]times and with one particular group was a younger group of guys
[57:46]all you know university students and i told them right before we
[57:52]went this was we landed in najef going to the shrine of
[57:55]amir mu'min alaihissalam the commander of the faithful the greatest man to
[58:02]ever walk this earth after rasulallah the individual whom the imams that
[58:12]we're celebrating the two imams that we're celebrating and his uncle abifad
[58:24]allah these three nights these three lights so much we take from
[58:28]them and i challenge each of us in these nights try to
[58:31]see what you can take from them and make that an inspiration
[58:36]for these nights these are their nights these are the nights that
[58:50]they were born when we're going i i'm thinking of so many
[58:55]different things as i'm going towards the shrine right we're leaving our
[58:59]hotel room and i tell the guys they're like hajj do you
[59:03]give us any advice anything like you know before we go in
[59:07]a lot of them this is the first time doing ziada i
[59:10]was like i'm just gonna tell you guys one thing actually two
[59:16]things one don't have any expectations what what do you mean don't
[59:20]have any expectations when you're going to the shrine of amir mu'min
[59:23]don't think i'm going to feel a certain way as soon as
[59:28]i see the the the dome of the imam i'm going to
[59:30]melt i'm going to cry i'm going to be happy i'm going
[59:35]to be whatever remove all expectations remove your expectations and just experience
[59:42]it and then the second thing was connected to that was don't
[59:46]take pictures the first time you go not the whole first trip
[59:51]i mean just literally the first time you're walking to the shrine
[59:53]just experience it just allow yourself to have that experience with walking
[59:59]towards the shrine and thinking about the one who you're visiting one
[60:05]of the great maharaja in the holy city of najaf and visiting
[60:11]him in the same group subhanallah this group is going to get
[60:14]ajar right now from tonight just remembering them we went from najaf
[60:19]and we were going to karbala and this great scholar he's giving
[60:26]advice to the guys and they're going to visit he says go
[60:35]there visiting them sending your salutations to them holding on to the
[60:44]shrine not asking for your needs not praying to god don't pray
[60:52]to god for your needs when you first go and you visit
[60:59]them challenge yourself to go visit hussain just because they are worthy
[61:04]of being visited just because of what they did for you and
[61:09]me just because of what they sacrificed what kind of life they
[61:16]lived so you and i can know the truth of god visit
[61:18]them with that intention visit them with that heart visit them with
[61:23]that state of mind be present in that moment don't worry about
[61:29]your needs don't worry about your what you want don't worry about
[61:34]all of that subhanallah it was the individuals that were fully present
[61:38]that saw death and before them that saw the greatest dangers before
[61:44]them but they were so present knowing their purpose they would dive
[61:48]right in look at how right now we're connecting when you go
[61:50]back to ah al baitan you connect fear and how to deal
[61:54]with it passion and how to get it purpose and where it
[61:57]comes from all from them you want some answers tonight you want
[62:02]some answers tonight about what career you should choose where you should
[62:05]go where you should spend your time i want you to look
[62:10]at bifid i want you to look at imam hussain i want
[62:13]you to look at imam saying check out imam zayn al-abidin the
[62:18]son of imam hussain who survives the massacre of karbala what does
[62:23]this man do for the rest of his life some people will
[62:29]never know about imam zayn our fourth imam why they just stopped
[62:36]at imam hussein made sure by divine order the hussain would survive
[62:47]so that you and i can know our imams and know that
[62:54]truth is to live his life and dedication to what awakening the
[63:03]spirit of the individual awakening that soul imagine a world imagine a
[63:10]community imagine a society that had the audacity to not only kill
[63:16]imam al-hussein but they slaughtered him massacred him in such a way
[63:21]in such a brutal way knowing who he was and having no
[63:25]regrets his passion his purpose his vision would give him the strength
[63:35]to continue to do what revive and awaken people's spirits he led
[63:43]a spiritual renaissance a couple of things i want to take away
[63:46]in honor of these nights and i'm sorry i'm taking a little
[63:48]bit longer with this okay in honor of these nights as we
[63:53]celebrate look at if you are if you are down if you
[64:01]are not motivated if you are lacking inspiration if you are seemingly
[64:06]depressed if you are any of these things of course with the
[64:12]disclaimer if you're experiencing anything that requires the you know the advice
[64:17]the counsel the treatment of a professional especially a mental health professional
[64:19]that's something definitely you need to seek out but on the surface
[64:25]on a general higher level you're not having a good day you're
[64:30]losing hope go to the spiritual instructions of imam zayn abidin and
[64:37]what i mean by spiritual instructions through what was compiled and known
[64:44]as the psalms of imam sajad asahifa you look at these duas
[64:52]these supplications and these munajaat from the imam the whispers of the
[64:57]imam to god so many different conditions in which one if they
[65:03]were hopeless one who was repenting one who was sad one who
[65:08]is looking for allah subhanahu wa ta'ala one who is being thankful
[65:13]of allah some of us for example will be looking at god
[65:15]and we got allah give me a sign ya allah give me
[65:21]something show me the way show me what i should do and
[65:23]god provides that for us but we have to look we have
[65:27]to see it we have to open our eyes all in all
[65:33]as you bring this all together make sure that you don't detach
[65:41]the most essential part of your life from the things that you're
[65:46]trying to accomplish your education your career your marriage your home your
[65:55]family that you're going to build your involvement in the community everything
[65:59]that you do when it comes to a career all of these
[66:01]things they're definitely hugely important they're big part of your life but
[66:08]if they are empty of the purpose that you and i were
[66:15]born with then what's the point if you are driven by something
[66:25]other than your purpose then what use is that career really going
[66:29]to do for you then what use is the education really going
[66:32]to do for you when you can be someone who is not
[66:37]remembering god is not remembering why they're here is not serving their
[66:41]fellow man is just really thinking about some type of material game
[66:46]or fame some material gain or fame i don't care how many
[66:51]followers you have on instagram i don't care how many thousands or
[66:55]millions of dollars you may have the houses the cars all of
[67:02]that imam saying when he goes back to medina he goes straight
[67:08]to work people were looking at him he's teaching he's he's with
[67:18]people and he would bring remembrance to god and in the cause
[67:21]of god and they're looking like this guy is here really when
[67:28]rebellions were taking place in medina against the umayyads imam was present
[67:34]to keep the calm to guide people on how to behave on
[67:40]how to be and how to interact with the authorities they not
[67:44]only disrespected people and took away their rights but they just slaughtered
[67:47]his father his uncle his brothers his entire family and imam saying
[67:52]had the composure to tell people how to interact and how to
[67:54]engage go look at the treaties on rights 51 rights depending on
[68:03]which version you're looking at 50 or 51 if you're looking at
[68:07]sheikh sadok's version that's 50 rights if you're looking at 51 rights
[68:13]that are included by hussein you examine all of that you see
[68:22]see just just that alone our heritage our history is extremely deep
[68:26]don't look at our faith our school of thought is one that's
[68:29]just there to give you some inspiration on a friday night but
[68:33]rather allow it to continue to inspire you and move you every
[68:38]single day of the week and when you connect to that and
[68:41]i'm learning we're here up here learning we're here up we're up
[68:44]here trying to save our own selves through these reminders when you
[68:49]do that when you try earnestly to do that to connect yourself
[68:52]to that god-given purpose you're going to be successful you're going to
[69:00]be happy you're not going to be empty anymore you're going to
[69:05]see that passion how do you manage your time or how should
[69:21]i manage my time i i think jalal did a beautiful job
[69:26]in terms of what he did so i'm not going to go
[69:29]into that too far but i'll just say this in the quran
[69:36]it states surely there's going to be a time because you're asking
[69:46]for time there's going to be a time allah states that surely
[69:50]you're going to meet him so start with the end you don't
[70:01]want to be this person allah gives us some psychology in the
[70:05]quran and he states in this person is in a state can
[70:19]you put your heart in this state where you're now in front
[70:26]of allah and allah is questioning you in the quran it also
[70:30]states your own free will to speak has been taken away from
[70:39]you imagine you're in this state only what allah allows you to
[70:43]say when to say it then there's another verse that says your
[70:49]skin will bear witness against you everything will bear witness against you
[70:53]can you handle that responsibility all that responsibility is due to your
[71:00]time in how you manage it as jalal was stating about imam
[71:10]look into this man's life a lot of us we come away
[71:16]from the world and there's like a separa you know what i'm
[71:20]just going to keep that aside i'm just going to continue one
[71:22]more point and i'll finish now when we get to this level
[71:31]five minutes from now imagine death is going to come to you
[71:35]we always talk about death to scare you that shouldn't be a
[71:40]scary thing if your heart is in the right place when that
[71:46]moment comes and that interaction happens what are you gonna do when
[71:53]all control is taken from you the control that you have now
[72:02]wow we take it for granted i was up here one day
[72:04]before my mother passed away i never thought that the next day
[72:08]i'll be in the same mosque speaking and she's right in front
[72:14]of me i never thought about that it was so far away
[72:19]from me the thought was so far away but can you bring
[72:24]that presence into your heart can you do that death makes you
[72:32]aware it brings life to you death brings life trust me it
[72:36]brings life when you think about death it should bring life to
[72:41]your heart so allah will say to you don't allah says it
[72:45]says he starts begging allah for what that person and that verse
[72:52]starts begging allah look at the psychology of some of us and
[72:54]where we will be he starts begging allah for more time why
[73:01]would you ask for more time why won't you be asked to
[73:07]be saved because that person didn't do what they needed to do
[73:10]now grab hold of your life and time is scarce imagine right
[73:17]now we run out of water what would happen to this how
[73:23]expensive would it become to you do you treat your time your
[73:31]thoughts like that not many of us do if you do and
[73:37]you are truly truly scared of time then you will value it
[73:44]you will not take it for granted you will say allah has
[73:48]given me one more day and i'll finish with this rasulallah states
[73:59]r he says steal from the day because it is stealing from
[74:06]you steal from the day because it is stealing from you it
[74:18]just took part of your life that day is gone bring the
[74:23]morning back you can't take from it when you work out you're
[74:28]stealing from the day when you read you're stealing from the day
[74:33]when you come to a lecture you're stealing from the day you
[74:38]stole you put it in your bank account now the weight is
[74:43]increasing the passion is there your heart is being conditioned that is
[74:48]time steal from it because it's stealing from you and final thing
[74:53]imam ali salaam states surely time is like a sword if you
[75:07]don't cut it it will cut you it's either you or time
[75:12]i'm sorry cut your time please don't think you're going to wake
[75:19]up tomorrow you want to maintain time you want to understand time
[75:25]don't think you're going to wake up tomorrow when you go to
[75:30]sleep and when you wake up don't think that what you're going
[75:32]to end the day in sleep if you can do that truly
[75:37]with your heart then you understand time next question if you set
[75:48]a goal for yourself and you can't fathom attaining such a goal
[75:53]how do you push yourself through that can you say it one
[76:06]more time if you set a goal for yourself and you can't
[76:08]fathom attaining such a goal how did you push yourself through that
[76:19]how do you push yourself through that so whoever asked that question
[76:31]i'm assuming that what's attached to that question is a a feeling
[76:39]that you're not worthy or you're incapable of accomplishing the goal that's
[76:47]before you and i think with this let me give you some
[76:51]some examples so growing up i went to fortson high school in
[76:57]dearborn in east dearborn and when we when we went to fort
[77:04]said a lot of us didn't necessarily think about going to schools
[77:08]outside of our immediate community not necessarily because we you know we
[77:13]desired that oh you know we wanted to stay close to home
[77:19]but some of us it wasn't even something that was talked about
[77:22]between counselors and and depending on your experience in the high school
[77:27]that you went to those counselors have a great deal of an
[77:29]effect on you those teachers have a great deal of an effect
[77:34]on you it wasn't until uh our principal say that had began
[77:42]to instill in many of our minds that you can go to
[77:50]schools that are the top in the country in fact one of
[77:52]them is in our backyard the university of michigan and you should
[77:58]be aspiring to go to these top schools as young kids as
[78:05]young students the way we interacted with what our future was was
[78:09]on the basis of we can't we don't know we're coming from
[78:15]let's say immigrant families and most of our families not necessarily having
[78:18]been you know educated on a higher level not to blame anyone
[78:23]of course not in fact we as the sons and daughters of
[78:28]immigrants we stand on the shoulders of giants our parents our grandparents
[78:32]how much they sacrificed for us to have the opportunity to even
[78:34]say which school can i go to that's your opportunity that's before
[78:40]you they made that opportunity for you now go and see what
[78:44]can you produce but there's this idea some of us have in
[78:49]our minds that we're just not able we're not capable we're inept
[78:58]even i i want you to take this and put it in
[79:02]your heart take the following and you might have heard this in
[79:06]numerous situations you might have seen it on instagram you might have
[79:11]seen it on you know so many graphics and people share this
[79:13]openly which is beautiful but i want you to take it and
[79:18]see within the context of this discussion as part of a narration
[79:24]it is narrated that he says you suppose you're an insignificant entity
[79:34]you're a small entity you're small insignificant while within you lies the
[79:42]entire universe the greater universe depending on the translation or unfolded within
[79:46]you is the entire universe or greater universe imagine that that young
[79:53]kid from fortson or any other high school any small town who
[79:59]thinks yeah you know i don't even know if i'm gonna go
[80:03]to college or let alone any big university let alone you know
[80:07]try to excel at any program amir moment as our spiritual teacher
[80:14]as the greatest example of what a muslim is after rasulallah as
[80:20]a great the greatest example of what it means to be a
[80:24]server of muhammad s telling you hey hey hey you you you
[80:33]you each and every single one of you don't think you're insignificant
[80:37]don't belittle yourself don't think you're incapable don't think you're inept don't
[80:44]think you can't you can and everything you need is within you
[80:49]because what because you are that beautiful creation that creature of god
[80:56]the creation of allah subhana wa tahala that gave you all of
[81:03]these faculties to be the best of the best you have what
[81:06]you need if only you reflect so anytime you're looking at a
[81:12]goal an objective something you're like man i can't do it you
[81:16]need to push yourself remind yourself of where you come from remind
[81:21]yourself of where your roots are remind yourself of your true purpose
[81:25]remind yourself of what this thing is all about in your position
[81:32]in the world allah subhanahu wa tahalah made us the sons of
[81:37]adam as his vice gerunds on earth in niger our father adam
[81:47]we're descendants of his we have a purpose to play in this
[81:53]world and that is to be our very best allah subhanahu wa
[81:57]ta'ala created us gave us worship so that we reach certainty and
[82:02]we see our excellence as human beings as the creations of god
[82:07]trust me and not because jalal is saying this it's because it's
[82:13]all coming from the greatest of wisdom muhammad sallallahu alaihi muhammad as
[82:18]simple as that anytime you see something whether it's in your education
[82:23]it's in your career it's an interview for a position whatever it
[82:28]may be you can't do it check yourself check yourself real quick
[82:33]what would you say to the person who say to you like
[82:38]you're not being practical like the person who say to you okay
[82:47]i'm i want to aspire and i want to do these things
[82:50]but there's no way i can do what i'm thinking i'm i'm
[82:55]trying to be practical so what would you say to a person
[82:59]like that did practical land people on the moon the practical forget
[83:07]the moon did practical allah to awaken the generation after generation and
[83:26]century after century to know what islam truly was what's practical on
[83:30]the day of khaibar when amir al-mu pry open with his two
[83:38]bare hands and allow the muslim army to rush that fort was
[83:41]practical when lady khadija alaihissalam tells muhammad i will give you everything
[83:48]i have what's practical well lady fatima would defend a little bait
[83:55]would defend amir al-mu'min and make clear to the entire ummah what
[84:00]the intent and purpose and vision of muhammad sallallahu alaihi was was
[84:05]practical would flip the switch on the umayyads and tell him no
[84:14]we're not going to war we're going to have a peace accord
[84:18]and the peace accord is going to have all of these conditions
[84:20]he would have the strategic vision to allow for a peace accord
[84:24]to take place flip the switch and expose the umayyads 18 years
[84:29]later and for the centuries later when muawiyah would die and appoint
[84:31]yazid and yazid would want to kill imam al-hussein imam al-hasan was
[84:37]he being practical or was he being visionary you and i brothers
[84:43]and sisters if we want to be quote unquote practical then let
[84:49]our goals be very small let our objectives be very small and
[84:56]let us stay within a very small domain and you can be
[84:59]fine with that but do you want to live up to your
[85:03]true potential your true potential is much greater than just by merely
[85:07]being practical now i understand there could be other connotations to practical
[85:11]right and by speaking practically now i'm gonna beyond the high level
[85:16]vision of what i just talked about these things that i'm talking
[85:19]to you about brothers and sisters are principles emotions right now let's
[85:27]take a few actionable things practically speaking who are you spending your
[85:32]time with if you're looking at a goal and objection okay i
[85:37]can't go to that school you're kidding me that 17 18 year
[85:41]old who's thinking about which university to go to i can't go
[85:44]to harvard i'm a kid from dearborn really yes you can man
[85:51]that's like the best school in the world yeah and you're from
[85:56]the best community in the world look at yourself like that not
[86:02]with arrogance or ego the potential that you and i have brothers
[86:05]and sisters we can take on everything if you set your mind
[86:09]to it and you have the right purpose who are you surrounding
[86:13]yourself with i bet you if you surrounded yourself with individuals that
[86:17]had those lofty goals and that were working to accomplish them you're
[86:22]going to you're going to actualize them so ask yourself who are
[86:25]you spending your time with what are you spending your time on
[86:29]like man i'm not going to get that job i can't get
[86:34]that job no way no way i'm gonna land that position really
[86:38]i'll give you an example there's a brother of ours from the
[86:43]uk the united kingdom and he had a specific job in mind
[86:47]after he graduated from from university and he made a calculation he
[86:54]said if i want this job i'm gonna need to apply to
[86:59]a lot of different organizations and companies he wanted one job he
[87:03]wasn't he wasn't necessarily like greedy for a certain salary or compensation
[87:08]right do you know how many applications he submitted to different companies
[87:15]take a wild guess he just wanted one job he landed that
[87:20]job how many applications did he submit how many how many jobs
[87:23]did he apply for how many organizations did he submit his resume
[87:28]to take a guess 20 100 100.
[87:44]you may be thinking man that's a lot in his mind he's
[87:49]like this is what i need to do to get my to
[87:50]get to my goal and this was after he had consulted with
[87:54]people in the industry a lot of people i'll tell you again
[88:01]now going to a little bit back on the professional side you
[88:02]have the goal for example you want to understand what it you
[88:05]know how how it is to work in finance how it is
[88:09]to work in the stock market how does to work uh in
[88:12]engineering in law and medicine whatever it may be most of the
[88:17]time as professionals hajime sam is a motivational speaker he's a life
[88:23]and business coach you may be interested in that field whatever field
[88:27]it may be ask the individual and surround yourself and connect yourself
[88:33]with individuals that have what you want the goal that you're looking
[88:39]at it's not far from you i remember some of the university
[88:41]students that i talked to they would have never thought that they
[88:44]could have gone to harvard or columbia or yale i'm just a
[88:49]kid from dearborn i asked them what's different for you said i
[88:56]just tried i thought you know what why not try i'll tell
[88:59]you for example i didn't even apply to those schools when i
[89:03]was going to undergrad i didn't even think about it because again
[89:06]my background was like yeah maybe u of m because say the
[89:10]ahmad allah he pushed us towards that but now masha'allah you see
[89:16]in our community you have and by the way not necessarily saying
[89:17]that you have to go to an ivy league school but it's
[89:20]just something that basically when you're looking at education it is an
[89:22]option if you want the option you can go for it whatever
[89:28]trade even if you're not necessarily going to school whatever trade whatever
[89:33]business as an entrepreneur whatever it may be arma raja understanding the
[89:41]heritage of our scholars they advise us to go and become the
[89:46]best that we can possibly be and whatever it is and serve
[89:50]other people if you're going into law medicine journalism you know coaching
[89:55]marketing whatever it may be just be the best at it strive
[90:01]and do whatever you need to do to connect with the right
[90:07]people so that you're pointed in the right direction and you'll be
[90:10]surprised how much you can get just by having the courage to
[90:17]ask the other day i got a linkedin message from a student
[90:20]on the other side of the world and this student he tells
[90:24]me he's like hey i wanted to learn more about the legal
[90:26]system of the united states of america this kid was from like
[90:31]venezuela actually no not that was a different email not venezuela this
[90:33]one was on the other side of literally the other side of
[90:36]the world not the western hemisphere anyways so did i ignore his
[90:42]email no i'm like hey this kid's pretty cool he's from other
[90:46]side of the world he's asking he's a high school kid 17
[90:49]years old am i too busy for that no i'm gonna give
[90:54]someone the chance trust me a lot of people out there whatever
[90:56]profession they may be you think you can't accomplish that goal what
[91:01]do you do to push yourself forward try the worst thing that's
[91:07]going to happen is that you fail once twice three times you
[91:12]keep failing you keep trying that's what life's about how many times
[91:15]do we sin and i'll end with this how many times do
[91:18]you and i sin it could be the same sin over and
[91:22]over and over and over and every time you're like ya allah
[91:24]please forgive me ya allah i'm sorry this is gonna be the
[91:27]last time i'm not gonna do it anymore i'm gonna try repent
[91:33]repent repent repent repent and you keep on go keep going back
[91:35]i mean if there was any of us looking at each other
[91:39]and be like man come on you're gonna keep doing the same
[91:41]thing they're like man i'm sorry man i'm sorry man i'm sorry
[91:50]allah every time we come back he welcomes us he never closes
[91:56]that door on us ya ya allah you you protecting us from
[92:02]even our own selves what a beauty that is and he's giving
[92:07]you the opportunity after opportunity after opportunity if god is giving you
[92:11]opportunities with himself you think he's not going to open up opportunities
[92:13]for you and the rest of the world for you to have
[92:16]opportunities with everybody else connect with him connect with him thank you
[92:22]sorry for that long-winded answer guys i'm sorry i prolonged that one
[92:28]i'm sorry okay for the sake of time we'll just move on
[92:30]to the next one for you hajj sam when something goes wrong
[92:35]in our career path how do we know when to take this
[92:39]as a sign to change paths or to take it as a
[92:43]challenge that we must overcome okay um could you repeat the question
[92:51]one more time when something goes wrong in our career path how
[92:58]do we know when to take this as a sign to change
[93:03]paths or to take it as a challenge that we must overcome
[93:06]okay um so a sign to change pass or a challenge to
[93:15]overcome what you're saying is here should i avoid or should i
[93:20]approach that's literally what you're saying it's like a fork in the
[93:28]road it's i do i go this way or do i go
[93:29]this way so what you're asking here is an application question which
[93:34]is very difficult to answer without the actual situation so you're leaving
[93:39]me up here with okay i have to guess so application questions
[93:44]are very difficult um we're good okay so application questions are very
[93:54]difficult without the circumstances so i'm gonna just give you some general
[93:58]advice when you hit the wall of frustration let's say you hit
[94:05]a challenge if the challenge is there for you to grow and
[94:10]you go through it if you're just scared if you're a person
[94:12]who's scared of the challenge then i would tell you to push
[94:18]forward if it's something that is like to you it's a challenge
[94:23]that's you're just afraid of it and practically you can actually beat
[94:30]it then move forward go against it strive forward the other side
[94:35]is get some um in in the middle of that get some
[94:40]mentorship i would tell you get someone throw your ideas against someone
[94:46]who knows more than you they can see you in a different
[94:51]light so they can give you some advice to see your strengths
[94:53]and your weaknesses and maybe you're not going towards the right career
[94:57]maybe you're not going towards the right because right here it sounds
[95:01]like somebody's in between they got hit by a wall and they
[95:04]don't know to move forward or to actually what disengage now the
[95:11]other side maybe this is a point that you should shift you
[95:16]should do something different because maybe you're not in your talent you're
[95:21]not where you're supposed to be let's say your parents have forced
[95:28]you into something see what i'm saying it's not something you like
[95:31]there's no passion that might be true a lot of times when
[95:37]i coach like i have to pry out like the fingernails of
[95:41]the mother and the father out of the kid why because i
[95:48]see something different for the kid than the parents that's not easy
[95:53]to do but i'm sorry i go in there and i take
[95:54]charge and then the parents want to interrupt then okay you lead
[96:00]the kid but you hired me for a reason so what i
[96:06]do is literally i go in and now i give you a
[96:11]personality test right off the bat and for those you've taken those
[96:14]personality tests they're scary because what i get to see now is
[96:17]something completely different so get that kind of coaching there that's what
[96:21]i would tell you to do get someone to really analyze who
[96:25]you are if you're moving towards something that is good for you
[96:31]then then pursue push if it's within your talent and who you
[96:34]are if it's not and it's actually you're doing it because you
[96:37]want status or you want the money how many of you picked
[96:41]a career just for money i'm sorry just say it okay it's
[96:44]hard to put your hand up i'm sorry but at the end
[96:48]of the day a lot of us we want that security we
[96:51]want that financial stamp and we kind of throw our passions away
[96:56]a lot of people will say you know to you like oh
[97:01]my god i love art or i love this my parents want
[97:04]me to be a doctor i want to be a lawyer they
[97:07]want me to be you know nothing against lawyers but it's but
[97:12]at the end of the day is that for you so what
[97:16]i would tell you is if it's along with your allah wants
[97:20]for you as a person to me it's a crime against yourself
[97:23]if you don't truly find out what you're supposed to do in
[97:28]this life and you do it you like you're literally taking you're
[97:32]telling allah you put these talents inside of me and i don't
[97:34]want them because i'm scared i want to be a doctor i
[97:38]want to be a lawyer i want to be this this this
[97:41]that because they have status and they have money so i hope
[97:48]that makes sense overall find out what you're genetically programmed for who
[97:53]you are and the more you do that the more clear the
[97:58]answer will become because i have i have okay i have doctors
[98:02]who are my clients okay so just reaching that status doesn't mean
[98:13]that call us i made it no there's a lot of things
[98:19]you have to take care of but at the end of the
[98:22]day if it's something that's good for you and it's within your
[98:26]genetic code and where it makes you something more unique down the
[98:31]line definitely go after it if it's not and you feel like
[98:35]really dragged down and it's you've gotten some advice and yes or
[98:39]no then i would tell you move away from it thank you
[98:48]okay unfortunately we've run out of time so i'm sorry we didn't
[98:52]get to all the questions but thank you all for coming and
[98:55]i'll hand it back to the emcee s foreign thank you guys
[99:16]so much for joining us so we really appreciate all you who
[99:20]stayed this long you guys are true warriors um thank you hajj
[99:23]jalal thank you sam thank you ahmed bhitar thank you guys and
[99:28]please remember to join us tomorrow for our program celebrating and imam
[99:35]jain abdullah we're going to have an english and arabic program i
[99:39]hope you guys all have a good night
