[0:00]foreign let me say that it's an honor and a privilege to
[0:09]be here with you on this night I believe it is now
[0:16]the 12th night of and we congratulate you during this blessed month
[0:24]of the birth of the best of creation during this month and
[0:37]also in this month of the birth of one of the great
[0:44]imams of all of the Muslims one of the teachers of Abu
[0:50]hanifa and Imam Malachi bananas one of the imams for the people
[0:55]of the salwarf one of the imams in the thick of methadi
[1:01]the birth of Imam I am going to be speaking with you
[1:20]the topic is the state of public schools and of course I
[1:23]know that some of you here in particular are concerned about recent
[1:27]events in Dearborn Public Schools regarding books and I'm going to touch
[1:34]on that topic though that's not the only thing that's going to
[1:37]be discussed but there is something that we need to be aware
[1:42]of in regards to certain trends that I want to point out
[1:49]because we as Muslims here in Southeastern Michigan just cannot be reactive
[1:56]to what's going on in the education of our children everything this
[2:00]can't be reactive or putting out fires we also need to be
[2:07]proactive and taking the proper steps and making sure that we protect
[2:10]the souls of our children from being corrupted in this land in
[2:18]which we have prophecy that talks about in Hadith that talks about
[2:26]and how will you be will you see the Mah roof as
[2:28]monkar and the monkar is we now live in these times where
[2:33]even the Muslims ourselves take something that's munkar and we try to
[2:38]say it's good and then something that's been historically good for that
[2:41]Benny Adam has seen for thousands of years across civilizations have always
[2:46]seen us bad and now we even see Muslims trying to celebrate
[2:51]these things or make excuses for that calling it good and this
[2:55]of course was prophesied by Al khabib al-mustaph that this would one
[3:02]day happen amongst Muslims so care Michigan I'm here representing this evening
[3:10]our organization our community organization I'm the executive director of care Michigan
[3:14]it's a michigan-based non-profit it's an Islamic organization And to clarify for
[3:22]you all the Michigan chapter of care the Michigan chapter of the
[3:25]Council on American Islamic relations is primarily and firstly an Islamic organization
[3:31]we're not simply a civil rights organization with secular values that Advocates
[3:38]on behalf of the Civil Rights like how the ACLU does or
[3:42]like how the NAACP does for African-American people in which these are
[3:48]secular based organizations we are an Islamic based organization and the core
[3:54]of what we do everything that we do we strive to in
[3:58]the implementation of advocating on behalf of our community is masha'allah maybe
[4:10]there's maybe there's some sabotage masha'allah no problem so we are an
[4:35]Islamic based organization and we have standards that we realize that what
[4:43]we do regarding accuracy and I say this also as a piece
[4:49]of of nasiha for those of you who are in the audience
[4:51]who are activists or maybe those of you who are watching this
[4:56]live streaming right now or watch it later who are involved in
[4:59]activism or in politics everything that we advocate for or against know
[5:07]my brothers and sisters that there is hisab attached to it that
[5:11]just because we live in a secular society or think we are
[5:15]involved in some sort of civil rights activism or politics every decision
[5:20]that we make every letter that we write every vote that we
[5:25]cast we will be questioned about it by Allah whether we live
[5:30]in an Islamic Society or in a secular society there's hisab on
[5:36]all of it every single bit there she said so we don't
[5:40]have this idea of there's this clear-cut line where we have a
[5:45]deeney life in a Dunya we life as if the Dunya real
[5:50]life there's no hisab attached to it that's not our understanding and
[5:55]for every Adam's weight of good shall be seen and for every
[6:01]Adam's weight of bad shall be seen this is what Quran says
[6:04]this is the first thing in regards to this issue of schools
[6:10]we just we do not just simply advocate against individual acts of
[6:18]anti-muslim bigotry after school bullying we are concerned with those individual acts
[6:26]of Muslims being bullied in schools for instance we are concerned about
[6:32]that but beyond that we also Advocate on behalf for the exercise
[6:38]of the freedom of conscience this is also what we Advocate on
[6:46]behalf that in public institutions or in public schools that we Advocate
[6:50]on behalf of Muslim parents and Muslim Students to have the ability
[6:54]to practice their freedom of conscience and to not have their freedom
[6:59]of conscience infringed upon by school administrators or teachers unknowingly or knowingly
[7:09]unknowingly or knowingly this is part of our accuracy and what we
[7:15]stand for in our activism something else needs to be cleared up
[7:22]because there are many Muslims who misunderstand this issue of what is
[7:29]called the separation of church and state this is not written into
[7:33]the Constitution by the way but this is a principle where we
[7:35]say our country was established upon or we have a separation of
[7:39]church and state and for any of you who have studied Islamic
[7:43]Studies in any uh uh fashion to form or the sacred law
[7:52]that in order to come to a conclusion about a matter that
[7:56]we have to know what is called we have to know the
[8:01]facts on the ground and it's very important for us that when
[8:04]we talk about an American Muslim Community we understand the facts on
[8:10]the ground and the history of this land that we live in
[8:13]and understand the structures of how government was established and operates on
[8:18]a local level on a state level and on a federal level
[8:23]they all don't operate exactly the same separation of church and state
[8:27]has two meanings and many people who call themselves liberals or progressives
[8:32]seem to forget the second part and by the way care Michigan
[8:39]we are a non-partisan organization our Allegiance is not to the political
[8:43]left nor to the political right neither one of them are are
[8:50]awliyah right our Ultimate Alliance or Allegiance is with Believers with Allah
[9:02]with rasulullah Allah and the Divine teachings that were transmitted through the
[9:10]imams of our tradition in the itra Hakim this is where our
[9:28]Allegiance ultimately lies in being with other people with this and that
[9:32]these are coalitions that can come and go and we can a
[9:37]lot we can be in Coalition with some people on certain issues
[9:42]and not be with them on other issues there's no problem but
[9:45]they're not our unconditional allies so I'm making this as a statement
[9:51]for you for part of your political education for what I'm about
[9:55]to say the first part which we get separation of church and
[9:58]state and this relates to our schools government cannot have state sanctioned
[10:07]religion or a state sanctioned denomination of religion that then marginalizes people
[10:12]of other religions or other denominations alhamdulillah this is actually a hidden
[10:21]Nema or blessing of living in the United States of America if
[10:24]one were to live for instance in Turkey for instance the official
[10:32]methab is methab hanafi you can't even preach in the massage it
[10:36]or talk about if you don't follow the al-Qaeda of the mataridi
[10:42]Akira right this is distinction religion and denomination or medev in Turkey
[10:51]right so nothing can be taught in the massager outside of that
[10:58]particular method that is State sanctioned right the wahhabi ideology you can't
[11:04]go to a Saudia and go into the massage it and openly
[11:10]teach in schools in schools anything outside of wahhabi methodology and um
[11:18]they have three favorite words everything's better that's it that's that's their
[11:33]Trinity better here alhamdulillah the United States of America and in our
[11:41]schools we don't have State sanctioned religion being taught in public schools
[11:47]it can't be forced by law the second part is however that
[11:55]government cannot substantially burden religious practice or religious conscience so the state
[12:04]cannot sanction or impose religion but nor can the state or the
[12:14]schools substantially burden the freedom of religious practice or religious conscience there's
[12:19]also what is meant by the separation of church and state so
[12:25]the public schools cannot favor or impose religion nor can they actively
[12:28]marginalize religion and religious practice it goes both ways it's supposed to
[12:35]go both ways which leads to part of what we do with
[12:38]our civil rights for instance did you know students who are here
[12:44]and parents should know this too that schools have to allow students
[12:52]to make Salah in school if it's their pray time and they
[12:55]want to make Salah they have the constitutional right that makes Salah
[12:59]and say teacher I want to go it's my prayer time to
[13:03]make Salah and they have to be able to give a Time
[13:05]legally to allow you or your children to go to the bathroom
[13:10]to make will do let's say during lunch break and if there
[13:15]is a room or a corner to make Salah to the extent
[13:18]that public schools also cannot stop Muslims from starting Muslim student associations
[13:27]and having Muslims organized in public schools this is a constitutional right
[13:33]I'm supposed to be leading inshallah next Friday in Northville High School
[13:38]for the Muslim Students that we worked with and helped organize and
[13:45]they have an MSA she kids and Sunni kids have a MSA
[13:48]and have such a Jamar in Northville High School they have in
[13:54]Canton High School they have Salah they even have because of the
[13:58]timing and our room for the Suba in Jamaica because the time
[14:04]they drive to school you know with this time of year in
[14:06]prayer they can't make prayer at home the prayer time comes in
[14:10]when they're driving to school there's literally a room that's set off
[14:13]where they can make Salah schools have to accommodate this right and
[14:19]we should encourage our children to use these opportunities and to pray
[14:24]in school as able when they're able to prayer Pray or if
[14:28]it's prayer time because one thing they know my brothers and sisters
[14:31]in Islam this is how America works like my family has been
[14:36]in America for almost 400 years like I viscerally understand certain things
[14:41]about America and I will tell you this in America if you
[14:46]don't stand for your race and exercise your rights your rights will
[14:49]be taken from you there is no safety in the margins or
[14:54]thinking you're just going to be silent or sit back oh I
[14:56]don't want to offend these people if I invoke my rights maybe
[15:01]I'm going to make them angrier you be quiet and they're going
[15:07]to take some here then they're going to take some more and
[15:11]some more and some more and then you're going to cut your
[15:13]then you'll catch yourself in a situation where you're trapped in the
[15:17]corner this is how America works you stand up or you get
[15:22]rolled over this is not a country for the faint-hearted and the
[15:27]meek and even the rights that we have that did the constitutional
[15:31]rights people struggled and died for these rights that you can even
[15:35]wear hijab sisters that people struggle for their rights and got thrown
[15:42]in jail just so we could have these massages right this didn't
[15:49]come about just out of nowhere just from The Good Will of
[15:52]people people struggled for these rights now in this that the government
[16:00]cannot substantially burden religious practice this also carries the meaning that school
[16:05]curricula is not supposed to be anti-religious nor actively undermine any religious
[16:13]groups religious conscious or religious practice there's not supposed to be any
[16:23]school curricula or books that are put forward in schools that are
[16:29]anti-religious or seek to actively undermine a particular religious groups religious practice
[16:39]or religious moral conscious this is what we can say is in
[16:50]theory an American but it is happening today all throughout the United
[16:54]States of America including in this state of Michigan and it's done
[17:01]by the party of the field and the party of the hamar
[17:04]you know it's interesting that in the two political parties we have
[17:08]in America the major ones they're both named after animals in the
[17:11]Quran that Allah does not mention in a positive light foreign and
[17:36]they didn't live up to and fulfill it they're like donkey carrying
[17:44]books isn't it ironic the Quran is a book for those who
[17:51]think and Ponder to Deborah and we have our Sheikh back there
[17:55]he he could teach you better this much better than I can
[18:00]and I'm gonna get some prime examples do we need to understand
[18:04]the examples as it relates to this discussion in public schools my
[18:08]primary interest up here is not your critique or to talk about
[18:15]MEP scores that's not my Lane about standardized testing about how to
[18:21]better improve math scores or uh writing in English scores that's not
[18:25]the primary reason I'm here we're talking about protection or religious practice
[18:30]and religious conscious our first amendment protected constitutional rights and our sacred
[18:38]values as Muslims this is what I'm talking about the other the
[18:43]other area is not my expertise the third is specifically Michigan law
[18:48]establishes the role of the parent as partner in their children's education
[18:57]and I have a form to pass out for you literally afterwards
[19:01]I can give you the statute number in Michigan law where this
[19:07]is mentioned this means that the school system or the government does
[19:14]not have the ultimate right to dictate to our children what constitutes
[19:21]moral acceptability again the schools and the public works for us the
[19:36]power is supposed to be in the hands of the people the
[19:41]state has no right to dictate to parents what should be morally
[19:52]acceptable for their children or what constitutes moral acceptability we're talking about
[19:58]freedom of conscience I'll give an example I'll give an example very
[20:07]easy example we have a movement now in schools where you go
[20:14]into a school and they ask the students actually this happened in
[20:21]a school in Dearborn not long ago in an email they sent
[20:24]out an email asking students a series of questions including what is
[20:31]your sexual orientation and what is your gender identity how do you
[20:36]identify your gender right how do you identify your gender now if
[20:47]your child does not want to answer these questions about preferred pronouns
[20:52]they cannot be bullied or be compelled to even answer this they
[20:59]cannot be bullied or cannot be compelled to even answer what is
[21:05]this right so we're talking about freedom of speech freedom of speech
[21:10]is not only having the freedom of what to say in certain
[21:13]circumstances it's also the freedom of being silent see freedom of speech
[21:22]also that doesn't mean just so your child if they feel that
[21:26]it goes against their religious values to affirm certain pronouns that go
[21:31]against their beliefs they cannot be morally or legally compelled to speak
[21:36]and call People by certain pronouns or call someone of them or
[21:43]they that violates the laws of English Language by the way because
[21:47]them are they are plural there's not even proper English they cannot
[21:51]be compelled to say that if they want to abstain and you
[21:57]might even say what's the problem that like let's say I'm a
[22:02]he right at least I hope everyone knows here that I'm a
[22:07]he I shouldn't have to say what my pronouns are right but
[22:10]you say what's the problem with that if if my child doesn't
[22:15]want to say their pronouns or someone else's pronouns what's the problem
[22:21]just go ahead and just say the pronouns because it begins to
[22:27]affirm something that is at its base is false the basis that's
[22:34]false that goes against our religion is that gender is simply a
[22:38]man-made construct that people can choose on their own when we say
[22:46]that gender and Islam is a Divine construct at its roots oh
[22:54]humankind surely we created you or we constructed you as a male
[23:00]well they said and the male is not like the female this
[23:07]is the Quran Columbo law right in the Quran says and don't
[23:17]dress up the truth with falsehood so it's a false premise so
[23:22]if you as students or as parents are uncomfortable with your students
[23:29]affirming these things you cannot be compelled to affirm certain things that
[23:35]based upon your religious conscience or your beliefs you know is Bolton
[23:40]and not even you believe that you had yaquin you have certain
[23:45]to servitude and no is bottom and there's no such thing as
[23:52]someone being uh non-binary subhanallah even the Arabic language everything has gender
[23:58]isn't that right the language of the Quran table that's what temabota
[24:03]on the end is feminine Neffs is feminine in the Arabic language
[24:09]the self the soul the ego it's feminine in the Arabic language
[24:14]isn't that right it's not masculine it's feminine right there is no
[24:24]neuter there is no um non-binary Allah in the Quran says he
[24:29]created everything and creates Zao Jane literally Allah says he created us
[24:36]with binaries he created us with binaries okay so this is one
[24:44]thing know your rights and you will feel more comfortable in exercising
[24:48]their rights and if someone is wants to call himself a she
[24:53]that's on them do you have to affirm that absolutely not but
[24:59]anyone could call anyone what they what they want to call themselves
[25:03]is fine as a matter of fact there are people now who
[25:08]are now saying they're not even fully human you have someone who
[25:11]says they're a trans wolf they're trans feline I forecasted this years
[25:21]ago as a matter of fact I said there's a couple times
[25:23]where people are not fully human right we live in we this
[25:30]is the time we live in now when it comes to books
[25:41]and we talked about this issue of curricula there's a difference between
[25:48]books that are assigned and books in the school library these are
[25:52]two different things one thing they know too just to raise your
[25:56]awareness and we're talking about uh and we're getting to the issue
[26:00]I know it's a Hot Topic because of Dearborn in the book
[26:03]issue the mayor of a city does not set School curricula the
[26:12]mayor of the city has no say-so and no direct Authority on
[26:21]putting certain books in a school library or taking certain books out
[26:25]of a school library that is not in his or her jurisdiction
[26:28]of any mayor of any City in the state of Michigan we
[26:33]need to understand people's roles right this is the role and the
[26:37]purview of the school board and this is why I've always said
[26:40]to the Muslim Community we get overly caught up in National politics
[26:46]and national elections were the most important elections is your local elections
[26:50]all politics is local your mayor helps determine your city services and
[26:57]who the police chief is and how your communities are policed from
[27:00]police response times to racial profiling or whether your Police Department is
[27:05]going to be part of the joint terrorism task force alhamdulillah Dearborn
[27:09]Police pulled out of the joint terrorism task force in the cve
[27:13]countering violent extremism program right masha'allah alhamdulillah these are good things right
[27:23]mayor hamud has no control over directly over what book goes into
[27:32]the school library and what's taken out it's not in his control
[27:35]it's not it's not in his control it's not in his control
[27:38]is not in his control right just like in the United States
[27:46]of America Congress on the federal level congress makes laws only the
[27:52]president signs something into a law an executive order doesn't mean an
[27:56]incontrovertible law of the land right there's a difference there's a separation
[28:03]is my point now parents have the right and say so and
[28:16]have the public voice on how curricula is shaped and what books
[28:21]should be in the schools right why because we're talking about minors
[28:28]we're talking about people who are not legally adults any books that
[28:37]are considered overtly offensive have material that's considered lewd or lascivious in
[28:46]pictures as well as in words should not be accessible to minors
[28:54]in public schools to the extent that there's a Michigan law this
[29:07]is a felony to disseminate sexually explicit matter to minors in pictures
[29:16]or verbally in words it's literally a criminal statute to give something
[29:24]to a minor that talks about explicitly or refers to sexual acts
[29:30]be they heterosexual or homosexual this is literally Criminal no I'm not
[29:38]I'm not calling for any teachers to be prosecuted but I'm saying
[29:41]this is an argument to be made before our school board of
[29:46]any school board if there are books and materials there are seen
[29:49]to be offensive and indecent to minors when someone goes outside of
[29:56]a public school they go to university they go somewhere else they
[29:59]can buy whatever books they want or they can go to another
[30:01]library and check out whatever book they want to check out we're
[30:03]talking about miners we're talking about miners here we're being very specific
[30:12]Public School libraries are different from University libraries they should not have
[30:20]the same material the cognitive levels and we have a psychologist here
[30:23]he could tell you Dr shetty's here the cognitive levels brain is
[30:32]different from an adult who's like over the age of 24 years
[30:39]old a young person's brain hasn't even fully developed their brains are
[30:42]very malleable you people who are like younger like you haven't reached
[30:47]a full age of discernment yet if you are like 18 or
[30:50]21 years old you're not even there yet so this material should
[30:58]not be for minors okay so for instance alhamdulillah this is a
[31:07]step in the right direction from our organization's perspective is not it's
[31:12]not all the way that the city of Dearborn needs to go
[31:15]so people in the community raise concerns about certain books in Dearborn
[31:19]Public Schools there was a school board meeting last month there's another
[31:28]one coming up this Monday at 7 pm if you live in
[31:33]the city of Dearborn and you want your voices to be heard
[31:38]as legal permanent residents or as citizens who react in the city
[31:42]of Dearborn you have the right to let your voices be heard
[31:45]the city put out a statement and they made this uh statement
[31:52]of two things number one that they're gonna have a review board
[31:58]to review certain books in the schools that people have raised concerns
[32:04]about like you can go online like CBS News covered this and
[32:07]you can go online and read this this statement there's a new
[32:10]story the second thing is is that there is a form that
[32:17]parents can fill out for students to opt out of certain books
[32:24]of having the ability to order or check out certain books from
[32:30]Dearborn Public Schools this is a step in the right direction I
[32:34]believe but it's not as far as it should go because the
[32:40]reality of it is any books like this that talks about explicit
[32:45]lewd and lascivious Behavior there should not even be an opt-out option
[32:50]because they're not should they should not be available to minors period
[32:54]full stop they should not be available at all full stop to
[33:01]minors they shouldn't even be able to be looked up for the
[33:07]possibility of even being checked out for minors not if the parent
[33:11]knows or Hears A Certain book and then they sign a form
[33:15]how many new books get introduced into the libraries a year does
[33:21]every single parent know about every single book I surely don't although
[33:24]my children aren't in in public school I have two College age
[33:27]and one who's a senior in Islamic school but I wouldn't know
[33:36]how to go about finding or that takes a lot of research
[33:38]to find out every school year what new books are available in
[33:44]the library system that then students get access to in public schools
[33:47]for Dearborn Dearborn Heights Detroit Hamtramck Garden City Westland Livonia I know
[33:54]there's people who live in other areas in just Dearborn or Dearborn
[33:56]Heights in here right now how many parents are doing that no
[34:05]those books should not be available at all they shouldn't be available
[34:09]and that's our organization's position so alhamdulillah there's a direction in the
[34:12]right step likewise let me tell you this as well and I
[34:21]mentioned this issue about the left and the right you know Malcolm
[34:26]X made an a parable or an example he said that it's
[34:28]habo field they're like uh wolves or like foxes right he said
[34:41]that the conservatives are like wolves you know Malcolm X's speech I
[34:45]think it's like the ballot of the bullet he said more than
[34:48]one speech the other one uh and he said that the Liberals
[34:53]are like foxes now both of them like to eat lamb chops
[34:56]they like to eat the lamb a wolf in the fox that
[35:02]both eat your sheep if you're not guarding your sheep the difference
[35:08]is wolves howl and make a lot of noise the fox is
[35:13]quiet even the fox will show his teeth like he's smiling the
[35:18]fox is more likely to eat your sheep than the wolf because
[35:22]you can protect yourself better and organize better from the wolf that
[35:26]house than from the fox that smiles right we have to be
[35:36]a people about principles not parties we are looking for the principles
[35:42]of what's going to firstly preserve ourselves in this society and as
[35:49]and as a leader in the Muslim Community I say unapologetically that
[35:53]my first concern is for the Muslim Community no intelligent community in
[36:00]the name of civil rights or rights will give up their own
[36:05]rights as a community in favor of someone else's exercise of certain
[36:11]things that are subjective I'm not going to give up what's sacred
[36:16]or give up the rights of my community for other people's so-called
[36:22]rights that I disagree with why would I do that the jewish-american
[36:24]community doesn't do that when they find a book or there's a
[36:29]book in the library they call anti-semitic they raise the roof and
[36:33]get that book removed isn't that right right I'm advocating for the
[36:44]Muslim Community that's my first and primary concern I don't want to
[36:53]see anyone get hurt physically everyone should have some basic human rights
[36:58]but I'm not going to Advocate on behalf something that's going to
[37:04]erode the sacred values of civil rights of my own community and
[37:07]we shouldn't do that either that would make us unintelligent that'll make
[37:14]us stupid right and anyone who's involved in politics who's doing that
[37:23]I honestly and sincerely suggest to you to rethink that position to
[37:29]rethink that position the other issue is when we're talking about this
[37:40]issue of gender or we're dealing with this issue in uh Plymouth
[37:43]Canton School District maybe it will come to this this school district
[37:50]soon got a call two Fridays ago actually I know this family
[37:57]young sister mohejaba in the bathroom in this guy who is just
[38:10]as big as me I'm six foot one 225 pounds with a
[38:18]deep voice walks into the girl's bathroom saying that he's gender fluid
[38:23]that he's a girl that day now what's the problem with this
[38:32]or the same thing for locker rooms what's the problem of this
[38:39]there's two problems with this the first problem from a religious perspective
[38:46]this makes it impossible for our young ladies to even take off
[38:51]their hijab to make wudu or the or to straighten out their
[38:53]scarves when a male a biological male who's non-mahram can just walk
[39:00]into the room at any time it doesn't matter what a person
[39:05]calls themselves they have X Y chromosomes they have all of their
[39:11]male body parts that is a man where they say they woke
[39:14]up that morning feeling like a woman that's called gender dysphoria so
[39:20]this makes it almost impossible for our sisters to maintain their hijab
[39:27]in any sense of modesty if any guy can walk into a
[39:30]bathroom or to a girl's locker room when they are changing their
[39:33]clothes [Music] that is an infringement upon All Rights when we talk
[39:41]about diversity equity and inclusion someone's inclusion cannot be to our exclusion
[39:47]remember this saying someone's inclusion cannot be to our exclusion when we're
[39:55]talking about our first amendment religiously protected rights no no and this
[40:05]may be something that ends up being litigated in courts here in
[40:07]Michigan very soon and if you have complaints about this contact our
[40:15]office in Vermont you can just see a story a volleyball team
[40:24]10 young ladies were barred from using the girl's locker room you
[40:31]know why they were borrowed from these in a girl's locker room
[40:37]because a guy who says that he's a she joined the team
[40:41]and he's in there with his male body parts dressing and undressing
[40:46]in front of the young ladies the young ladies went and complained
[40:50]to the school so instead of telling this person change in the
[40:55]singular bathroom the singular stalls they said no he feels like a
[41:02]woman therefore he's a woman so then you can't use the locker
[41:04]room Lily borrowed them it's a new story I'm not making this
[41:14]up right this is a problem at the same time we have
[41:24]to also be worried about the so-called islamophobia I don't like this
[41:29]term islamophobia it's anti-muslim bigotry that also comes from the right as
[41:35]well in this it displays itself in a couple of phases and
[41:38]I want to speak on one particular book because it's being pushed
[41:42]because of what's going on in the Islamic Republic of Iran right
[41:46]now it's a book called persepolis I'll get to that in a
[41:48]moment because we've had to deal with this book and it's being
[41:50]pushed more in schools and it may be pushed in Dearborn schools
[41:55]or Dearborn Heights or somewhere else Where Your Children Are at so
[42:01]the right who also has this anti-muslim bigotry is trying to expunge
[42:13]from curriculum any discussion of history or discussion that has to do
[42:19]with racism or xenophobia and they've labeled everything critical race Theory now
[42:23]I have a problem with some of the aspects of critical race
[42:27]Theory but critical race theory has been made a trojan horse to
[42:31]try to exclude and talk about historical facts in America and the
[42:36]history and the legacy of racism and xenophobia in America it's being
[42:41]tried to use as a tool of taking out certain books even
[42:46]a book like roots for instance a book written by Alex Haley
[42:51]for example in certain States they've tried to get that book pulled
[42:54]but actually talked about Kunta Kinte who was a Muslim from the
[42:56]mandinka tribe by the way of the Africans who were Muslims who
[43:01]were enslaved and brought here to America against their will in in
[43:04]the system of child slavery by white supremacists right or to remove
[43:15]certain books that would even present Islam in a good light that
[43:23]would challenge islamophobia and this is all used are the rules of
[43:26]trying to get rid of critical race Theory this is a problem
[43:29]too which is a book that's pushed forward called persepolis persepolis is
[43:33]a book that basically if I can sum it up it's a
[43:39]girl in Iran she's young when the when the Islamic revolution took
[43:43]place in 1979 and then what happened is she comes to the
[43:49]West and then she realizes or she believes that Islam is oppressive
[43:54]and then she takes off her hijab because hijab is a tool
[43:57]of Oppression and she renounces Islam now if this is the only
[44:06]book in English class or literature class for the entire year that
[44:10]talks about Muslims or Islam or the so-called Middle East I say
[44:16]so-called Middle East because Britain named that area the Middle East that's
[44:20]not not a term that was used in Islamic history until Britain
[44:24]carved up the world and made the Far East the near East
[44:26]and the Middle East those are those are colonizer terms colonialist terms
[44:30]don't even use that term Middle East I was unit for the
[44:34]sake of this discussion the so-called Middle East if this is the
[44:39]only book that students are reading about Muslims in Islam during a
[44:46]literature course then this is problematic and this gives no balance and
[44:55]it plays into orientalist tropes that America and the white man has
[45:02]to liberate and save the Muslim women from the oppressive Muslim patriarchal
[45:05]societies this is an old Trope in orientalism and colonialism it's been
[45:12]used to invade Muslim countries it's been justified by politicians it's being
[45:16]used as a tool of propaganda for coup d'etats an attempted coup
[45:21]d'etats and it puts in the false notion of of non-muslim children
[45:31]that Islam is inherently oppressive and that hijab is bad and it
[45:39]makes some of our young sisters even question their own Islamic faith
[45:44]and identity and mix them question the hijab and makes them think
[45:47]that is oppressive so we've worked for instance in schools why Hein
[45:55]which this school was used this is in Washington County regarding this
[45:58]book we got this book removed from the school from it being
[46:03]taught to students and another school in Canton the teacher was teaching
[46:08]it we asked to come in and speak to students and then
[46:10]we also gave if we're going to read this book then we
[46:15]have an alternative book for you to read as well you just
[46:17]don't read that book only right so it comes from the right
[46:25]and the left so again in summation before I take any questions
[46:29]and answers number one or recapping Public Schools don't have the right
[46:41]to impose religion nor do they have the authority to substantially marginalize
[46:48]religious practice and religious conscious Public Schools do not have the authority
[46:57]to Define what is morally acceptable to your children the state works
[47:08]for us we are not enslaved to the state and if you
[47:17]don't invoke your rights you are subject to lose your rights or
[47:23]have your rights infringed upon if you have any gray area you
[47:28]have our organization to call and we will pass out these information
[47:32]you have the number and we work with people in schools and
[47:38]I'm being very Frank with you and I have a different tone
[47:41]because I'm amongst my people right now We're very professional we're very
[47:44]diplomatic we go to people in urban areas and Suburban areas we
[47:50]talk to people who are political progressives and political conservatives we don't
[47:57]say we don't talk to a certain group of people just because
[48:01]in a particular party we are advocates advocating for what's best for
[48:05]the Muslim Community in our Allegiance is to Allah and to protecting
[48:14]this Community First not to any other so-called because we're all so-called
[48:22]minority groups and you know and and the blacks and the Latinos
[48:26]and the Muslims and the gays all have to stand together in
[48:32]solidarity that I don't even stand with all black people when black
[48:36]people are wrong I'm definitely not standing for everything that is propagated
[48:42]by Como Luther right so that's that's our position and we ask
[48:49]Allah with Allah to help us and our endeavors and our Affairs
[48:53]and do things with wisdom and I encourage you all for those
[48:56]of you again who are uh residents of Dearborn in particular go
[49:01]to the city school board meeting Monday at 7 pm let your
[49:07]voices be heard one of our staffers a representative of care Michigan
[49:13]will be on site also passing out forms and we'll be observing
[49:17]things Insha'Allah and if you have any complaints you can always come
[49:20]and contact our office
