[0:00]The Islamic Republic of Iran has a high degree of popular legitimacy,

[0:06]but it's an open society.

[0:07]If you go in a taxi in Iran, people will say bad

[0:12]things about the government, about the leader, about the state of life.

[0:16]If you look at the different political parties, their telegram channels, their

[0:22]websites, many of them attack the leader in a polite way.

[0:25]Others viciously attack the president.

[0:27]They attack his opponents.

[0:29]But in the west they choose to pretend that this doesn't exist.

[0:35]The legitimacy of the state in the eyes of the Iranian people

[0:38]is very high.

[0:39]But at the same time there's a great deal of dissatisfaction.

[0:42]Being legitimate uh and being dissatisfied are not uh in contradiction with

[0:49]one another.

[0:50]I can be unhappy with your performance and you can be unhappy

[0:53]with what I say, but at the same time that doesn't mean

[0:58]I reject you or that you reject me.

[1:01]The narrative on Iran is that everyone hates the regime and they

[1:05]all want to, you know, overthrow it.

[1:10]So all we have to do is give it a push.

[1:11]This whole idea is nonsense.

[1:17]They're living in an alternative universe.
