[18:34]louder brothers and sisters it's great to see you all joining us

[18:45]for the second night of the annual myc and iia muharram program

[18:50]as always we'd like to start off the program with the recitation

[18:52]of the holy quran recited today in arabic by brother musafa salami

[18:56]so please welcome him with muhammad muhammad muhammad thank you very much

[23:39]brother musafa for the wonderful recitation of the holy quran brothers and

[23:43]sisters once again to you all it's wonderful to see you joining

[23:48]us for the second night of commemoration of the ultimate sacrifice made

[23:52]by our beloved imam hussein before we move on to the main

[23:57]lecture i just have a couple of announcements i would like to

[23:59]go over first brothers and sisters i wanna remind you that the

[24:03]programs will be continuing from tonight until the october 12 inshallah starting

[24:25]blessed this year to have joining us for the myc lectures muhammad

[24:30]baqar al qazwini born in the holy city of qom close to

[24:34]the shrine of the daughter of imam al qadam alaihi salam alaihi

[24:38]salam he was born to a family renowned for its piety and

[24:42]knowledge in a house of virtue and nobility akin to that of

[24:45]his honored ancestors he is the son of samahat sayyid hassan al

[24:49]qazwini and the grandson of ayatollah a syed mortud al qazwini and

[24:54]he left the holy city of karbala to spread the call of

[24:56]the in the united states syed al qazwini completed his schooling in

[25:03]los angeles and then moved to detroit to further his academic studies

[25:06]in the 2004 the sayyid returned to the holy city of qom

[25:09]to continue the islamic studies in which he started under the teachings

[25:13]of his grandfather he currently studies under a number of prominent scholars

[25:16]and continues to teach his own islamic classes throughout the year the

[25:20]sayyid continues to travel through cities all around the world to give

[25:23]lectures and teach about islam and he is regularly found lecturing in

[25:28]the united states and now it's with great honor that i welcome

[25:31]to the podium after allah muhammad muhammad muhammad muhammad muhammad muhammad the

[26:46]second one with a louder voice for abi abdullah al hussain i

[27:20]begin in the name of the almighty god the compassionate the merciful

[27:25]the one who has created everything in utmost perfection and may the

[27:31]peace and blessings of the almighty god be upon his pure and

[27:34]beloved messenger the peak of humanity the best of his creation the

[27:40]holy prophet muhammad and may god's peace and blessings be upon the

[27:52]pure immaculate progeny of the ahlul bayt peace be upon them especially

[27:57]the leader of our time the awaited savior al imam al mahdi

[28:02]may god hasten his reappearance and make us all amongst his sincere

[28:10]and dedicated servants allah subhanahu wa ta'ala states in the holy quran

[28:38]in this holy verse allah states the number of months with god

[28:45]is 12 in the book of god decreed by god the day

[28:50]he created the heavens and the earth four of these months are

[28:56]sacred months this is the true upright religion illuminates your hearts and

[29:07]minds with a very loud salawat allah the number 12 indeed it

[29:19]is a very interesting number no matter how you look at it

[29:25]we have twelve months throughout the year in most schools around the

[29:30]world you see there are 12 grades the number 12 has mathematical

[29:36]significance to it when you examine its mathematical significance it's an amazing

[29:42]number it's the smallest number with the most amount of practical applications

[29:51]when you examine the number 12 across all religions especially the divine

[29:56]religions you find that it has some sort of significance examine judaism

[30:04]the holy quran tells us that in judaism with prophet musa alaihi

[30:10]salaam god divided bani israel into 12 tribes we divided them into

[30:23]12 tribes having them form communities and then allah instructed prophet musa

[30:32]when they asked their prophet that they are thirsty they want some

[30:38]water allah subhanahu wa ta'ala instructs prophet musa peace be upon him

[30:44]allah says take your stick and strike it at the rock what

[30:49]happened 12 springs started to flow miraculously from that rock then prophet

[31:01]musa instructed his tribes to come and take from this water it

[31:09]holds great significance prophet ya'akub peace be upon him we see that

[31:14]he has 12 sons and his 12 sons are the progenitors of

[31:19]the tribes of bani israel prophet ismail alaihis salam the bible speaks

[31:25]about 12 princes who come from his progeny for example refer to

[31:32]the bible the book of genesis chapter 17 verses 15 to 20

[31:40]what does the bible say according to these verses in the bible

[31:45]god is speaking to abraham peace be upon him he tells him

[31:50]ask for ishmael your son ismail i have heard you behold i

[31:58]have blessed him i will make him fruitful will bless him and

[32:05]give him blessings exceedingly i will give him a lot of numbers

[32:11]and then what does the bible say he shall beget 12 princes

[32:17]and i shall make him a great nation when you go to

[32:22]christianity you see that prophet isa he had 12 disciples and they

[32:28]are well known when you examine even other religions such as hinduism

[32:35]you see that they have 12 holy shrines they call them the

[32:39]jaiturlingas in india they're holy shrines that they've dedicated to their god

[32:43]shiva for example but that number holds significance indeed it's an amazing

[32:49]number when you now come to the religion of islam we see

[32:55]that this number is also a significant number you know there are

[33:00]those scholars or people who are interested with letters and words and

[33:06]trying to make up mathematical equations even if you look at it

[33:10]that way it's amazing the number 12 for example they tell you

[33:14]that the phrase has how many letters 12 letters the phrase muhammad

[33:21]rasulullah in arabic how many letters does it have it has 12

[33:25]letters the word imam in the holy quran from its singular and

[33:32]its plural how many times has it been mentioned in the holy

[33:34]quran 12 times indeed you see the significance now the bible speaks

[33:42]about 12 princes descending from the progeny of ismail what does islam

[33:52]have to say about this refer to the book of bukhari there's

[33:57]a hadith in bukhari narrated by jabir ibn samara he says i

[34:04]heard the holy prophet peace be upon him say that after me

[34:08]there shall come 12 amirs 12 princes the same word that the

[34:13]bible uses subhanallah after me there shall come 12 princes all of

[34:21]them are from torahi'j according to other versions from bani hashem specifically

[34:26]from the tribe of bani hashem we see for example in the

[34:30]book of muslim he uses the word khalifa after me there shall

[34:35]come 12 caliphs musnad ahmed ibn hambal he also has a hadith

[34:43]in which he says the number of the successors of the holy

[34:46]prophet peace be upon him is the same number of what the

[34:51]of bani israel those tribal leaders of bani israel which are 12

[34:57]the same number indeed this number is a significant number now do

[35:03]we find any references to this number in the holy quran is

[35:08]there anything in the holy quran that makes references to this number

[35:14]if you examine verse 36 of surah al baqa of surah al

[35:18]baqa surah surah al baqa verse 36 we see that allah subhanahu

[35:24]wa ta'ala speaks about the number 12 in this verse allah subhanahu

[35:30]wa ta'ala states the number of months with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[35:39]is how many 12 in the book of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[35:47]as decreed by god the day that god created the heavens he

[35:58]created the earth god fixed twelve months four of these months are

[36:06]sacred months we see there is a reference to this number 12

[36:10]allah is pointing out that i have fixed twelve months for you

[36:15]o humanity i have decreed twelve months for you this verse is

[36:23]referring to the lunar calendar in the solar calendar we also have

[36:27]twelve months but the verse is specifically speaking about the lunar months

[36:34]allah has assigned 12 lunar months for humanity and that's why you

[36:40]find that the islamic calendar and our important events are based on

[36:45]what are they based on the solar calendar or the lunar calendar

[36:50]they're based on the lunar calendar now there are some people who

[36:54]come and object especially in the month of ramadan why is it

[36:58]that islam is based on the lunar calendar and god has fixed

[37:02]twelve months in the lunar calendar why because the lunar calendar is

[37:09]unpredictable how do we know if tonight or tomorrow the moon can

[37:13]be sighted couldn't god give us something that we could predict better

[37:20]something more accurate and every year in the month of ramadan we

[37:24]have this chaos in our community about the signing of the moon

[37:29]and people are saying what's going on what's up with this calendar

[37:34]our technology is better than this calendar we could predict the month

[37:37]better why did god give us this lunar calendar when you examine

[37:43]the history of the lunar calendar subhanallah this is from the of

[37:47]allah you'll find that there is no easier way and more practical

[37:54]way to track your month and keep count of your month than

[37:59]the lunar calendar imagine throughout history everyone for the city dweller for

[38:07]those nomads in the desert for the young for the old for

[38:10]the literate for the illiterate for the sailors who are sailing in

[38:14]the midst of the oceans if you want to know what day

[38:19]of the month it is all you had to do is what

[38:22]just look up to the sky and see the moon that's how

[38:24]easy it was if you had a full moon you knew you

[38:27]were in the middle of the month if you had a new

[38:29]moon you know that the month was over and a new month

[38:32]is starting this is how easy it is this is how practical

[38:37]it is you really didn't need to have a calendar and predict

[38:42]beforehand especially for those people who could not read and write all

[38:48]they had to do is look up to the sky and realize

[38:52]that the month is in its middle stages early stages what day

[38:56]of the month now because we're disconnected from this sometimes we have

[39:00]no clue when we look at the moon but those people they

[39:03]could tell you almost the exact date simply by looking at the

[39:06]moon so this is actually a practical method it's an amazing method

[39:13]that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave to humanity it's our technology that

[39:18]has complicated matters otherwise for a thousand three hundred years people had

[39:23]no issue every community every society they would look at the moon

[39:28]if it was established they would start the beginning of the month

[39:31]if it was not established they wouldn't it was that simple but

[39:35]then with our technology and each astronomer says something you have different

[39:41]calculation methods that's where we get our differences from otherwise the system

[39:46]that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given us is truly an amazing

[39:50]system and by the way the lunar calendar is also amazing because

[39:56]of the diversity that it delivers to you how so because it

[40:00]rotates throughout the seasons right imagine if allah would say you have

[40:05]to fast the month of july it would be a tragedy for

[40:08]us in north america and people in australia would get very happy

[40:13]because for them it's always winter and for us it's always summer

[40:16]but in the lunar calendar it rotates every thirty three years you

[40:21]have a full rotation so that in thirty three years you get

[40:25]to fast during the winter during the summer during the spring during

[40:29]the autumn and that's wonderful allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is actually giving

[40:33]us a diversity to our events to the month of ramadan to

[40:40]other events that we see throughout the year so allah subhanahu wa

[40:45]ta'ala has fixed twelve months for us then the holy quran says

[40:51]minha arbaatun hurom four of these months are sacred months what are

[40:58]these sacred months in the lunar calendar number one is what rajab

[41:05]the second month is what the qa'adah which is the eleventh month

[41:09]in the lunar calendar the third one is the the twelfth and

[41:14]the fourth one is which is the month that we're currently witnessing

[41:19]these are four sacred months now why is it that these four

[41:24]months are sacred in particular a hadith from an imam al batra

[41:28]he says allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wanted to honor his kaaba his

[41:34]house because of the pilgrimage because of the hajj so god declared

[41:40]these four months as holy months in the qadha the al hijjah

[41:45]and muharram these three months usually the pilgrims are going to mecca

[41:49]and returning back so in honor of the hajj and in honor

[41:53]of the house of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala god declared these four

[41:57]months sacred what about rajab what does it have to do with

[42:01]the hajj the imam says because of the umrah it's highly recommended

[42:05]for people to do the minor pilgrimage the umrah in the month

[42:08]of rajab so allah subhanahu wa ta'ala declared these four months as

[42:13]sacred and according to islamic law these four months are different than

[42:18]other months for example when it comes to warfare during these four

[42:24]sacred months war is to be stopped you have to drop your

[42:30]weapons even if there is an enemy and you have to fight

[42:34]that enemy allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says stop and this tradition came

[42:38]from prophet ibrahim alaihis salam these four months were declared as sacred

[42:43]months and he showed that to humanity so if there is war

[42:50]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says even if it's a just war yes

[42:54]your enemies deserve to be attacked because of what they're doing but

[42:58]in these months stop it drop your weapons this brings you closer

[43:04]to reconciliation when there's a three months truth from the qadah truce

[43:08]from the qadah to muharram this actually encourages both sides to think

[43:15]about the war the consequences of the war the heat of the

[43:20]war subsides and this was an amazing way for the religion of

[43:25]islam to break wars because some wars would last for decades in

[43:32]pre islamic arabia decades over petty issues sometimes they would fight one

[43:37]hundred years how do you break such wars allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[43:41]imposed a truce these months stop fighting it's a huge sin to

[43:46]fight in these months and this was truly amazing for example the

[43:52]arabs if someone had let's say killed your father if you find

[43:55]him in one of these months you would not seek retribution from

[44:00]him you would not kill him you would wait until these months

[44:04]would be over but when you wait three months four months that

[44:09]actually allows you to think about it maybe to have forgiveness maybe

[44:14]to show some reconciliation and therefore we see that the religion of

[44:19]islam has special laws when it comes to these months even we

[44:24]have narrations that tell us our good deeds are multiplied in the

[44:28]sacred months muharram is a sacred month every good deed that you

[44:32]did today it has been multiplied by allah subhanahu wa ta'ala but

[44:37]on the other hand every sin we also commit is multiplied in

[44:43]this month as well beware especially the muharram that we are experiencing

[44:48]now take advantage of this opportunity by allah subhanahu wa ta'ala the

[44:54]arabs when it came to these sacred months before the religion of

[44:58]islam they had this sinful tradition of playing around with the months

[45:04]the holy quran attacks them and rebukes them for that they used

[45:08]to commit what's called an nasee the holy quran says what would

[45:15]they do for example in one of those years at the hajj

[45:19]this is before islam one of those tribal leaders from bani canaan

[45:25]in mina he made an announcement he said oh people next month

[45:30]muharram is coming because the hajj is in which month in dhul

[45:33]hajj one month before muharram next month muharram is coming i want

[45:41]you to know that i am postponing the month of muharram we're

[45:45]going to skip muharram safar will come so we can resume our

[45:49]fighting and then we'll have muharram this is something that the arabs

[45:53]would do the holy quran rebukes them this is an act of

[45:57]disbelief don't play around with the months these are sacred months and

[46:03]you have to treat them with sanctity with honor and with respect

[46:09]but unfortunately how did this ummah treat the family of the holy

[46:13]prophet peace be upon him the man who enforced the sanctity of

[46:17]this month how did they treat his family they massacred his family

[46:22]in the month of muharram in this holy month which the holy

[46:27]quran is very clear that if there's any quarreling if there's any

[46:31]problems if there's any fighting stop it try to reconcile your differences

[46:37]then think about it later but if you're in the month of

[46:40]muharram stop but these evil people had no sanctity for the month

[46:45]of muharram so this verse 36 this is the tafseer of the

[46:51]verse the apparent meaning now is there a deeper meaning to this

[46:56]verse yes the imams of al al bayt they speak about a

[47:01]deeper meaning to verse 36 of surat tawbah the apparent meaning is

[47:06]that we have twelve months but in the religion of islam ahlul

[47:12]bayt teach us that the days and the months are blessed by

[47:16]them because they are the best of allah's creation even the days

[47:21]of the week there is a man by the name of as

[47:25]saqar ibn abi dulaf al kharkhi he says one day i wanted

[47:30]to visit al imam al hadi he was under house arrest and

[47:34]mutawakkir had imposed house arrest on him i went to visit the

[47:39]imam in special circumstances with fear he says i asked him about

[47:45]a hadith that all muslims have narrated a hadith from the holy

[47:49]prophet peace be upon him in this hadith the holy prophet peace

[47:53]be upon him says don't show enmity with the days don't fight

[48:01]the days because they'll fight you back he's asking the imam what

[48:05]does this hadith mean how can you fight the days we don't

[48:08]understand it can you explain it to us the imam says yes

[48:13]the days is a reference to us the al bayt peace be

[48:16]upon because allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has assigned every day to one

[48:21]of us every day is blessed by us one of the members

[48:25]of al bayt so for example saturday is the day of who

[48:30]the day of the holy prophet peace be upon him that's why

[48:33]when you read these daily duas some of you may have these

[48:36]apps in your smartphones there's a daily dua that we read one

[48:41]of those daily duas are those prayers in which we address the

[48:46]peace be upon them in this dua what do you read today

[48:51]is saturday o prophet this day is your day and i'm your

[49:01]guest you rasoolallah saturdays belong to the prophet peace be upon him

[49:05]i'm your guest on this day therefore treat me well because i

[49:09]know that you're generous so this is saturday what about sunday sunday

[49:14]is blessed by imam ali ibn abi talib monday by imam al

[49:18]hassan al hussain tuesday by imam zain al abideen al imam al

[49:23]batar and al imam al saddiq how about wednesday al imam al

[49:27]qadam al imam al raza al imam al hadi and we have

[49:32]special prayers for each one of these days and this is a

[49:34]great way to connect with the imams of al bayt on a

[49:38]daily basis brothers and sisters read these duas they have blessings for

[49:42]us and then thursday belongs to al imam al asghari and friday

[49:48]to who to al imam al mahdi that's why you find most

[49:54]of the duas such as dua and nudbah which address al imam

[49:59]al mahdi are to be recited on friday because friday is the

[50:03]day of al imam al mahdi peace be upon him so we

[50:06]see that the days are blessed similarly the months of the year

[50:11]have a connection with the imams of ahlul bayt the prophet peace

[50:14]be upon him in one hadith he says that the number of

[50:18]my successors is the number of the months of the year and

[50:23]we have a hadith from the al bayt that speak about this

[50:26]verse verse 36 of surah to tawbah allah is actually speaking and

[50:32]referring to the imams of al bayt how so scholars have pointed

[50:38]out and also the hadith when you examine the verse and analyze

[50:43]it we see that the verse is speaking about something deeper than

[50:47]just the months of the year first of all the verse says

[50:50]the number of months with god allah is speaking about something special

[50:59]with god not something that all people also have it twelve months

[51:03]look at all calendars around the world most of the calendars have

[51:07]the number 12 we have twelve months the quran says this is

[51:12]a special status with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and then allah says

[51:22]in my book allah has decreed the number 12 the book of

[51:29]allah is a reference to the ilm of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[51:33]the knowledge of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala it's through his knowledge that

[51:39]he assigns successors doesn't allah speak about assigning prophet adam as a

[51:47]khalifa on earth and when the angels objected what did he say

[51:50]to them i know what you do not know o angels so

[51:58]we see the special status relates to the knowledge of allah therefore

[52:03]the verse said in the book of allah that's number two number

[52:08]three we see that the verse says the day god created the

[52:17]heavens and the earth and this universe and this solar system allah

[52:21]has fixed twelve months well what is time what is a week

[52:26]what is a month isn't it a result of the rotation of

[52:31]the moon the revolution of the moon around the earth well when

[52:35]god first created the universe before the moon took its shape did

[52:41]you have 12 of those revolutions it seems that the verse is

[52:45]talking about something even deeper than that that this is a reality

[52:50]since god created the universe on the first day of this creation

[52:58]allah has fixed twelve months this also confirms that there's a deeper

[53:05]meaning that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is addressing over here and what

[53:10]was the first thing that god created according to shia and sunni

[53:17]examine our books what is the first thing that allah created before

[53:21]this universe we have narrations that say the first thing allah created

[53:28]was the light of muhammad for example you see that ibn asaqir

[53:40]in his book darikh tariqh dimash a prominent sunni scholar ahmed ibn

[53:45]hambal in one of his books what does he say he says

[53:50]the prophet peace be upon him said in one hadith the first

[54:00]the first thing god created in his presence was my light and

[54:04]the light of ali ibn abi talib way before god created prophet

[54:09]adam then when he created prophet adam god divided this light into

[54:14]two parts one part was for me and one part was for

[54:20]my brother ali ibn abi talib alaihi salam when he writes this

[54:23]hadith no not the shia's only ahmad ibn hambal the prominent leader

[54:29]of this hambali school of thought he mentions this hadith in his

[54:32]book he quotes the prophet peace be upon him therefore we see

[54:37]that the verse is speaking about a special status not just the

[54:41]months of the year and then the verse says what this is

[54:47]part of the true upright religion and we know that the imams

[54:53]of al bayt form one of the components of the pillars of

[54:59]faith allah in this verse is referring to one of the pillars

[55:02]of faith that's why he says this is the true religion the

[55:07]upright religion and the walaah of al bayt peace be upon them

[55:11]is part of the upright religion it constitutes a deen al qayim

[55:17]of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala now i know some people are wondering

[55:22]okay you're mentioning the 12 imams of ahlul bayt jabir ibn abdullah

[55:27]al ansari he objected to imam al baqar alaihis salaam you know

[55:31]some might object what happened to the prophet peace be upon him

[55:35]the imams of ahlul bayt their numbers 12 and this verse is

[55:38]a reference to them how come you ditched the prophet jabir abdullah

[55:44]al ansari he says i objected to al imam al baqir alaihi

[55:46]salam i asked him then what about the prophet where is he

[55:49]in this equation the imam beautifully answers him the imam alaihi salam

[55:55]tells him we are the months of the year but the year

[55:58]itself is rasulullah the year itself because we the imams of al

[56:07]bayt are part of the holy prophet we are not we are

[56:13]inseparable from the holy prophet peace be upon him we embody the

[56:20]teachings of the holy prophet peace be upon him see this beautiful

[56:23]expression from the imam doesn't the prophet peace be upon him says

[56:28]ali is from me and i am from ali hossein on minni

[56:33]wa anam and hossein we are part of the same equation so

[56:38]the prophet is the year and the months of the year are

[56:41]the imams of peace be upon them this number 12 that allah

[56:46]has blessed us with you know there is a pastor by the

[56:51]name of sachinia stretchen some of you may have seen her or

[56:55]heard her speak she converted to the religion of islam she says

[57:00]when i became muslim and i read about the number of caliphs

[57:05]saw that muslims say there are four caliphs but i was puzzled

[57:09]because in judaism and christianity the number 12 has significance jesus had

[57:15]12 disciples the other jewish prophets they had 12 disciples how come

[57:21]when it comes to the religion of islam it got reduced to

[57:24]four only she says this was puzzling my mind until i came

[57:30]across the followers of anil bayt and i read those hadith that

[57:34]say that the successors to the holy prophet peace be upon him

[57:38]are 12 she says immediately i realized that this number holds significance

[57:44]this is the true school of thought because it's compatible with all

[57:48]the religions of god the previous religions it's compatible with the number

[57:54]of disciples that previous prophets had in judaism in christianity in the

[58:01]abrahamic faiths and religions now go and ask muslims today doesn't bukhari

[58:08]say that there are 12 leaders after the prophet peace be upon

[58:12]him who are these 12 leaders it's not that we the followers

[58:18]of al bayt have an obsession with this number or with the

[58:21]imams of al al bayt it's because allah subhanahu wa ta'ala teaches

[58:26]us in the holy quran that i am the one who assigns

[58:30]the imam for you you don't have the right to choose this

[58:34]divinely guided leader because whenever allah uses the word khalifa the word

[58:40]imam whatever it is in the holy quran allah clearly states that

[58:44]i am the one who chooses for you o david we have

[58:51]assigned you as a khalifa o ibrahim i have assigned you to

[58:59]become an imam we have made them and assigned them to be

[59:06]imams look at the word imam and look at the word khalifa

[59:09]in the holy quran you see always allah speaking from his authority

[59:17]that i am the one who assigns this for you so ask

[59:21]muslims who are these 12 what have you done with the successors

[59:25]of the holy prophet peace be upon him what is the role

[59:30]of these imams many of us unfortunately even us the followers of

[59:33]al bayt we don't know what the role of our imams are

[59:38]how do we benefit from our imams of al bayt what significance

[59:42]do they have in our lives so what if there were 12

[59:46]imams or there weren't 12 imams does that change anything many of

[59:50]us have not absorbed this significant aspect of our belief system first

[59:59]of all the imams of al bayt brothers and sisters they complete

[60:03]the religion for us they saved the religion because if you believe

[60:08]that the holy prophet peace be upon him died without appointing anyone

[60:13]that means you believe essentially the prophet left the job unfinished how

[60:19]can he leave this ummah for them to fight amongst themselves and

[60:23]choose someone is that even possible when allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is

[60:28]the one who chooses these positions how can i believe that the

[60:31]prophet left without appointing anyone without assigning anyone that's why when you

[60:39]see the holy quran referring to the imam allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[60:43]makes it very clear to us that through imam i am completing

[60:47]religion go to surah al ma'adah verse number three after the holy

[60:53]prophet peace be upon him in the event of gadir he declared

[60:56]imam ali ibn abiqalib alaihi salam as a successor what does allah

[61:00]reveal in the holy quran today i have completed your religion now

[61:10]go to all schools of thought when was this verse revealed amongst

[61:13]the last verses of the holy quran to be revealed is this

[61:17]verse what happened on that day why is god saying today i

[61:22]have perfected your religion completed your religion why was there anything missing

[61:27]hajj has been declared to people the salah the prayer had been

[61:32]established the fasting al amrab al ma'ruf and nayhi an al munqar

[61:37]all these islamic obligations the prophet spoke about them the holy quran

[61:41]explained them what happened on that day such that god says today

[61:46]i have completed your religion and i have completed my favor upon

[61:50]you and today i've accepted islam as your religion think about this

[61:55]what happened towards the end of the prophet's life what significant event

[61:59]happened we need to ask ourselves these questions brothers and sisters it's

[62:04]the imams of ahlul bayt who completed the religion and imam al

[62:09]hussein is the one who saved the religion of islam otherwise the

[62:15]umayyads would have obliterated this faith that's why the sunni scholar al

[62:21]ajmiri what does he say he says the religion of islam owes

[62:29]its beginning to who the holy prophet but it owes its survival

[62:35]to who to imam al hussain that's a significant role of the

[62:46]imams of al bayt that they complete the faith for us number

[62:51]two the prophet peace be upon him did not have the opportunity

[62:55]to explain everything to the muslim ummah remember for thirteen years in

[62:59]mecca he was either under house arrest there were embargoes imposed against

[63:05]him he did not have the freedom to explain all the details

[63:07]of islam and even in medina there were so many challenges so

[63:11]many difficulties so many wars and troubles the prophet peace be upon

[63:16]him in those ten years did not have the opportunity to explain

[63:19]all aspects of islam yes he gave us the big idea he

[63:25]explained to us the important parts of islam but as for the

[63:28]details the prophet did not have time and even if he did

[63:33]the society wasn't ready you think that early society was ready to

[63:38]receive all the details of the religion of islam the details of

[63:42]islamic philosophy theology of islamic law people were not ready they just

[63:48]became muslims yesterday now you bombard them with all these islamic laws

[63:52]they're not going to absorb it who is the one who explained

[63:56]these islamic details and they and delivered to us these wonderful laws

[64:02]that we have the imams of ahlul bayt and that's why you

[64:06]see the schools of thought all emerged one during the time of

[64:09]imam saddiq because they had nothing they had to benefit from the

[64:14]knowledge of the imam's peace be upon them the imam's of ahlul

[64:18]bayt are our path to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala if you want

[64:23]knowledge you go to the imam's of ahlul bayt because they had

[64:27]all the knowledge from allah through the holy prophet peace be upon

[64:31]him one day the khawarid you know those enemies of imam ali

[64:35]the forefathers of isis today the khawarid wanted to test imam ali

[64:41]they said he claims to be the gate of knowledge let's put

[64:45]him to the test let's see if he's really knowledgeable so one

[64:48]of them stood up and he said let me ask you a

[64:51]question is knowledge better or is wealth better the imam ali salam

[64:57]says no knowledge is better he says why explain to me he

[65:00]says because you have to protect your wealth whereas knowledge protects you

[65:05]so knowledge is better he went another one came to him oh

[65:09]ali which is better knowledge or wealth he says no knowledge is

[65:12]better he said why he says because when you spend your wealth

[65:16]it decreases whereas when you spread your knowledge it increases so knowledge

[65:22]is better and then the imam keeps giving 10 different answers to

[65:26]10 different people they were shocked anytime you ask ali ibn abi

[65:31]talib is knowledge better or wealth better he'll give you a different

[65:35]answer explaining to you why knowledge is better then the imam alaihi

[65:39]salam told them he says listen don't tire yourselves if from now

[65:43]till the day of judgment you keep asking me this question i'll

[65:46]keep giving you different answers this is the knowledge of al al

[65:50]baith peace be upon them through their knowledge they saved the religion

[65:53]of islam you know interestingly one day the imam ali islam was

[65:57]about to say allahu akbar there was a jewish man he wanted

[66:02]to distract the imam he did not like imam ali ibn abi

[66:05]talib alaihi salam he's like let me throw a question at him

[66:08]i'll distract him confuse him he's about to do his salah and

[66:12]i'll ruin his salah he says oh ali ibn abi talib can

[66:16]you tell me which of the animals they give birth and which

[66:19]of them they lay eggs imagine the silly question now he's like

[66:25]good i got him good i'll distract him now he has to

[66:27]list me hundreds of animals which one lays eggs which one gives

[66:31]birth the imam in five seconds he told him in giving him

[66:37]his response before saying allahu akbar he says all those animals which

[66:41]have protruding ears they give birth and the others they lay eggs

[66:45]subhanallah modern science has confirmed this because all of the mammals they

[66:49]have protruding ears ears which are extending outside all of them they

[66:54]give birth and the others like the birds for example they lay

[66:57]eggs in five seconds this is the knowledge of the al baith

[67:02]peace be upon them that's why imam ali ibn abi talib he

[67:06]says ask me before you lose me but how did this ummah

[67:14]treat them the imam's embody the qualities of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[67:20]you want god's knowledge seek it through the imam you want to

[67:25]see humbleness look at al imam al hussain one day the imam

[67:29]was passing by a group of homeless people a group of destitutes

[67:35]they had gathered to eat some crumbs of bread some crumbs that's

[67:40]all they had they send their salaam to imam al hussain and

[67:45]they told him oh imam join us please now what would you

[67:49]do a bunch of homeless people eating crumbs of bread you know

[67:54]even if you wanted to be polite you would say no thank

[67:56]you inshaallah next time some other time look at the humbleness of

[68:00]abi abdullah al hussain he accepted their invitation he said i'll accept

[68:04]your invitation i don't want to break your heart the imam sat

[68:08]with them and that's how humble he was he joined them and

[68:14]then the imam says okay you've invited me now i would like

[68:16]to invite you he invited them to his own house and he

[68:21]gave them some food that he had this is the humbleness of

[68:24]imam al hussain alaihi salaam and imam al qadam alaihi salaam look

[68:28]at the forgiveness you want to see forgiveness read the life of

[68:31]this man al imam al qadam peace be upon him what an

[68:35]amazing imam of al al bayt peace be upon him there was

[68:39]a man from the progeny of umar ibn al qadam this man

[68:43]would always be you know very tough with that imam al qadam

[68:47]he would slander him he would attack imam ali ibn abiqalib alaihis

[68:51]salam until one day the companions of al imam al qadam you

[68:56]know they could not take this anymore they said oh imam give

[69:00]us the permission let's give him a good beating let's beat him

[69:04]to death every single day he slanders you and he cusses at

[69:07]you we cannot tolerate this the imam says no i do not

[69:11]give you the permission let me handle it let me take care

[69:15]of it what does he do the imam alaihi salam goes to

[69:19]his farmland he sees the imam approaching he's like be careful don't

[69:23]destroy my crops subhanallah how's the imam going to destroy your crops

[69:27]he's just walking in your farmland the imam goes to him he

[69:30]asked him he tells him i want to ask you a question

[69:32]the imam was smiling with him a man who's cursing him and

[69:36]cussing at him every day in the mosque of the holy prophet

[69:39]peace be upon him he tells him i have a question for

[69:44]you how much did it cost you this year to grow these

[69:47]crops he says 100 dirham he says how much do you expect

[69:52]to make this year he says i don't have alm al ghayb

[69:56]i don't have the knowledge of the unseen how do i know

[69:59]imam says take it easy i just asked you how much do

[70:01]you expect how much do you anticipate i didn't ask you if

[70:04]you have alm al ghayb he says i anticipate a 100 dirhams

[70:09]so i break even i've spent a 100 i'll make a 100

[70:13]the imam took out a bag which had 200 golden dinars and

[70:19]he gave him to that enemy who was cursing him every day

[70:23]imagine what happened to this man he fell at the feet of

[70:26]al imam al qadam alaihi salaam the next day the imam was

[70:29]walking to the mosque this man came and he saluted al imam

[70:33]al qadum alaihi salam and he says allahu alaihi salatah god knows

[70:39]whom he chooses to protect this faith to defend this faith the

[70:46]companions were shocked you know this man every day he's slandering you

[70:51]today he's changed a 180 degrees the imam looked at his companions

[70:57]like okay which one's better now you wanted to beat him to

[71:00]death or the way i handled it which one is better now

[71:04]this is the akhlaq of the al al baith peace be upon

[71:07]them these are the imams of al al baith peace be upon

[71:10]them we have to understand their important role especially the imam of

[71:16]our time brothers and sisters how many of us know what is

[71:19]the significance of al imam al mahdi what's the significance of this

[71:25]imam how do we benefit from him during the time of the

[71:29]ghaybah during the occultation the imam peace be upon him plays a

[71:35]very important role first of all he is the one who offers

[71:40]the complete ibadah to allah allah tells us in the holy quran

[71:44]the whole reason why i've created you the whole reason why i've

[71:50]created the universe for that matter is what is to worship me

[71:55]who is the one who worships god a 100% it's al imam

[72:00]al mahdi that's why in ziyarat al yaseen you see that the

[72:06]imam is paying his salutations to the acts of al imam al

[72:11]mahdi everything that he does peace be upon you when you stand

[72:21]because the standing of al imam al mahdi is an act of

[72:23]worship peace be upon you when you sit peace be upon you

[72:29]when you pray and do qanoot peace be upon you when you

[72:33]read when you recite during the day during the night the imam

[72:41]actually he legitimizes the creation of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala why he

[72:47]ensures the survival of the creation of god the continuation of the

[72:51]creation of god why because god created us to worship him and

[72:56]he's the one who's worshiping allah the way allah wants that's why

[73:01]we have a hadith that tell us the world continues by the

[73:05]blessings of al imam al mahdi peace be upon him we need

[73:09]to understand that through al imam al mahdi allah saves us from

[73:14]so many types of punishments doesn't allah address the holy prophet peace

[73:19]be upon him and he tells him those arabs at that time

[73:29]they committed acts of injustice they deserved to be obliterated but allah

[73:36]saved them because of the mere presence of the holy prophet in

[73:40]honor of the holy prophet i will not obliterate you we have

[73:44]a hadith that tell us in honor of the imam of our

[73:47]time allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does not obliterate us look injustice around

[73:53]the earth sometimes when you look at the acts of injustice and

[73:56]the corruption and the bloodshed and all the wars around the world

[73:59]you begin to wonder subhanallah don't we humanities deserve to be obliterated

[74:04]by god for what we're doing all the bloodshed that we see

[74:08]around the world all the corruption it's with the blessings of the

[74:12]imam peace be upon him the imam alaihi salam who witnesses our

[74:17]actions you know there are some people who have an issue with

[74:20]this how do i benefit from the imam when i'm not seeing

[74:23]him let me ask you a question do you believe in the

[74:27]contents of the holy quran as a muslim we believe that the

[74:31]devil exists right how many of you have seen the devil i'm

[74:36]sure some of you have seen the devil but not in this

[74:38]community alhamdulillah there are some devils walking on earth i'm sure we've

[74:43]seen many of them but seriously satan i believe how many of

[74:47]you have seen him do you believe in his existence but you

[74:53]haven't seen him oh but he whispers to us okay so he

[74:57]has this negative impact on you he can misguide you even though

[75:02]you haven't seen him so you've accepted the fact that there's a

[75:07]creation here on earth whom you cannot see with your naked eye

[75:12]but it has an effect on you and it's difficult for you

[75:15]to believe that al imam al mahdi now satan is the enemy

[75:19]of god al imam al mahdi is the friend of allah the

[75:23]representative of allah even you don't see him with your own eyes

[75:28]does that mean you cannot benefit from his spiritual presence you cannot

[75:33]benefit from the guidance of the imam just as allah subhanahu wa

[75:38]ta'ala has allowed the devil to whisper to you to misguide you

[75:41]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has allowed al imam al mahdi to serve

[75:47]as the source of guidance for all believers but you have to

[75:51]find that path to the imam the more you open your heart

[75:55]to al imam al mahdi the more you will benefit from his

[75:59]presence and that's truly amazing of course he witnesses our actions when

[76:05]the devil is witnessing your own actions and the devil is not

[76:09]only witnessing your own actions he can read your mind because if

[76:12]he does not know what your intention is then how can he

[76:15]whisper to you you want to donate the shaitan says no no

[76:18]no don't donate you haven't said it to anyone it's just a

[76:21]thought in your mind you want to go to a good place

[76:24]the devil whispers to you because the devil can read our minds

[76:29]can see our intentions if the enemy of god can see your

[76:33]intentions you don't think the representative of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has

[76:36]been authorized by allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to see that offer your

[76:46]actions allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sees your deeds and his messenger and

[76:53]who's the third one and the believers who are the believers it's

[76:58]the imams of ahlul bayt let us get closer to the imams

[77:03]of ahlul bayt let us understand what their important role is brothers

[77:07]and sisters they truly saved the religion for us this ashura commemoration

[77:15]that we experience every year you know who saved this for us

[77:19]it was an imam zain al abideen this imam for thirty five

[77:26]years he did something very unusual without al imam zayn al abideen

[77:31]know that there was no ashura no commemoration there was no islam

[77:37]the umayyad dynasty they had come to obliterate the religion of islam

[77:42]it was al imam zain al abideen who kept the fervor of

[77:47]ashura alive in our hearts we're all indebted to him and on

[77:51]such a night thank imam zain al abideen for all of his

[77:57]contributions for humanity for thirty five years brothers and sisters imam zain

[78:03]al abideen would mix his food and he would mix his water

[78:08]with tears crying on his father al imam al hussain the imam

[78:18]did not eat any food except that he would mix the food

[78:24]with his tears and this is what he would say how can

[78:33]i eat when the son of the messenger of god he was

[78:37]killed hungry how can i drink when the son of the messenger

[78:47]of god was killed thirsty he would cry for thirty five years

[78:55]until one day one of his servants he told him oh imam

[79:00]you've taken this too far isn't it time for you to stop

[79:07]grieving so much on what happened to your father hussain you're taking

[79:11]this too far you know what salimam zainul abideen answered him he

[79:16]tells him the prophet he's a prophet he's infallible mentioned in the

[79:29]quran he had 12 sons he was disconnected from one of his

[79:40]sons 11 of them were with him only one of them was

[79:45]away from him and that was yusuf for forty years what happened

[79:51]to prophet yaqub he lost he almost lost his eyesight because of

[80:02]crying so much and his back became bent because of crying so

[80:10]much and he became old his hair grew white because of all

[80:15]that pain and depression and his son yusuf was not even killed

[80:19]he was alive and he knew that his son was alive this

[80:26]is prophet yaqoob what about me zayn al abideen and as for

[80:50]me i had to see my father my brother my uncle and

[80:53]17 members of my family they were massacred around me you expect

[80:58]me to stop grieving jacob was separated from his son and he

[81:03]had 12 sons for forty years he cried such that his eyes

[81:07]went out and you expect me to stop crying on my father

[81:12]hussein when i saw his severed head i will never stop crying

[81:17]it's al imam zain al abideen who kept this alive for us

[81:21]brothers and sisters on such a night the night of the second

[81:27]of muharram the caravan of imam al hussein reaches the land of

[81:34]karbala the imam was on his way to kufa but they blocked

[81:40]him from reaching kufa the imam did not want to fight them

[81:45]the imam says don't want any war any battle let me go

[81:49]back from where i came from let me go to yemen they

[81:53]said no either you pay allegiance to yazid or we'll fight you

[81:57]there is no other way out so they forced the imam alaihi

[82:01]salam to continue north until he reached a land over there the

[82:07]imam alaihi salam realized that there's something about this land this is

[82:12]an unusual land it's not like any other lands and the horse

[82:15]of the imam refused to continue the imam realized that something was

[82:21]going on he asked his companions as habi my companions what is

[82:28]the name of this land some of them of them said the

[82:32]name of this place is nainawah the imam says does it have

[82:36]another name someone else said yes al ghadriyat someone else said attaf

[82:43]but the imam was looking for a different word a word that

[82:47]he constantly had heard from his grandfather rasulullah the imam kept the

[82:54]imam kept asking is there another name to this land when one

[82:58]of them said yes abba abdullah yes there's a name to this

[83:08]land that's called karbala upon hearing the word of karbala the imam

[83:13]involuntarily his tears flowed down his face he says because the word

[83:25]karbala in arabic is a combination of two words karb and bala

[83:30]trials and tribulations o allah i seek refuge in you from trials

[83:35]and tribulations the imam knew that this was their final destiny this

[83:43]is the place where they had to settle when he realized that

[83:46]he's in karbala he instructed his companions he told them my dear

[83:57]companions here we shall settle why o aba abdullah why shouldn't we

[84:02]continue why do you want us to settle here the imam explains

[84:06]to them the imam tells them here in this land our men

[84:15]shall be slaughtered they shall be killed here in this land our

[84:26]children the babies the infants they shall be slaughtered here here in

[84:34]this land our woman shall be taken as prisoners of war everyone

[84:44]pay your salutations to al imam al hussain everyone together brothers and

[85:35]sisters i have a couple of announcements i'd like to go over

[85:37]before we conclude the program first of all thank you and assent

[85:41]to muhammad baqar qazwini for that wonderful lecture brothers and sisters as

[85:47]you know the nyc works very hard and its volunteers are constantly

[85:52]dedicated to being able to come together to put these programs together

[85:56]for the youth of our community so at this point we'll be

[86:03]insha'allah brothers and sisters this is an investment in the youth of

[86:07]this community it's an investment for the future and the nyc is

[86:12]looking for this investment from our from the community so that they

[86:14]may continue to put together these programs so we're looking for two

[86:30]for the sake of the investments in the youth of this community
