In verse 32 of the 53rd chapter in the Qur’an, it is said,Ā ā€œJustify not yourselves. He knows best who it is that guards against evil.ā€ This means everyone should try to be pious. And I, God, will watch and judge.
Imagine someone who curses four times a day. One may say, ā€œHe’s cursing, so he’s not pious.ā€ No, wait! You can’t judge.Imagine another person who curses once a day. ā€œSo he’s not that pious either, because he’s cursing every day. The other person curses four times a day, so he is four times less pious.ā€ But we may see on the Day of Judgment that the one who used to curse once a day is taken to Hell because he wasn’t pious. But the other one who used to curse four times a day is taken to Heaven because of his piety. ā€œO God, it seems this isn’t fair! We thought this should be different.ā€
It will be as this verse states, ā€œIt will abase some and exalt others.ā€ [56:3] God will say, ā€œThe one who used to curse four times a day, I know that he stopped himself from cursing 40 times a day. Mentally, he was such that he stopped himself from cursing 40 times a day, but he couldn’t control those four cases. And about these four cases, he wanted to curse very badly, but he controlled himself and cursed just a little. Of course that was a fault, but We forgave him. So you can’t measure one’s piety that easily!ā€
ā€œGod, what about the one who cursed once. You could have forgiven him too.ā€ God says, ā€œNo! He wasn’t the kind of person who was used to cursing. I created him Myself. He wasn’t even upset, but he cursed. And he wasn’t regretful about it. He was thinking, ā€˜People are cursing so much. Now I cursed once. God should be ok with that!’ So I’ll punish him severely.ā€
ā€œThe most honorable among you in the sight of God is the most pious of you.ā€ [Qur’an 49:13] On the Day of Judgment, the most pious people will be obvious. But we can’t easily judge about them now. Let’s try to avoid the habit of judging people. Sometimes in a mosque or in a school, we quickly label people. We’re making some proud and some lose hope. So people’s honor will be ruined. What a great school it is that teaches its students to not keep easily judging others.
