There is a prerequisite to piety, or being vigilant, and that is a person knowing he is valuable. We say, “Be vigilant. Be vigilant so that nothing will harm you.” “Harm what? Is there something there?” “Yes! You! Your dear being.”
We need to have a course for students about the greatness of a human being’s existence. Or we can have a workshop about it. I don’t know. Something that will help them understand their value. If they don’t understand their value, what do they want to be careful of? The result will be that they won’t have piety.
Imagine someone having a bar of gold. Imagine a father telling his son, “You see, this is all we have! I have sold whatever we had and bought this gold bar. Take this to my cousin or to the bank.” The child will carry the gold bar very carefully even if his parents don’t advise him to do so. But when there isn’t anything valuable in his bag, he’ll play with his bag and even throw it on the ground several times.
Piety means being vigilant. What’s the foundation of this? Being valuable. Educators and teachers must have a plan for this. “What should I do so that when a child enters school, he’ll understand that he’s valuable?” Maybe a teacher should plan to stand up when students enter for them to understand they’re valuable. We must have a plan for teaching this and do something.
Which children become bad? The children whose parents have humiliated them very much and they haven’t had a good first seven years. How should the first seven years be? Children should be like a king with two servants. Who are their servants? Their parents. That’s interesting! Then how should children be trained during the following years? They should be filled with love. Then they themselves will say, “I want to receive orders.” They should be filled with the feeling that they were a king.
Is it possible to select who enters our elementary school? Yes. How can we select? What’s the criteria? We should see how their parents have behaved with them during the first seven years. If the child has understood his own value, accept him into your school. He has the capacity to receive training. But if he hasn’t understood his own value yet, he needs a special course first.
For example, he should go to a pre-school where these lacks are removed from him. During that period before elementary school, you should make the child understand, “You are very dear and honorable. Even if your parents haven’t been able to make you understand this, I will help you to understand this. Your parents love you, but they haven’t been able to show it. If they’ve shouted at you, for example, don’t be upset about it.” So we must help the child first, and they shouldn’t enter school feeling that way.
