[0:00]sciences are divided into various categories in terms of how useful they
[0:10]are you have for example certain types of knowledge that is utterly
[0:20]useless it doesn't grant you anything of value any benefit in this
[0:28]world or the next as having said god's messenger once went to
[0:56]the mosque when he entered the masjid he noticed a group of
[1:03]people that had gathered around an individual someone who was from out
[1:06]of town the prophet didn't ask who is that person he said
[1:16]what is this what's this about what's going on that person is
[1:26]in today's vernacular if we were going to use lingo that is
[1:30]familiar to us in this day and age we'd say that person
[1:35]is a doctor that person is a professor in other words the
[1:41]highest accolade the highest title you could grant someone in the prophet
[1:48]said what does he know that grants him this incredible fame and
[1:57]attraction and brings everyone around him this person's knowledge revolves around the
[2:07]science of genealogy in other words he knows people's family trees if
[2:13]you introduce yourself to him and say that my uncle was such
[2:18]and such my father is such and such by identifying key individuals
[2:23]in your family he's able to trace your family tree back to
[2:28]the original tribes for example or the geographic location from which you
[2:36]came whether you're originally from yemen or iraq or persia or the
[2:44]roman empire or whatever the case may be number one this person
[2:56]is very well versed in poetry he's well versed in the stories
[3:01]of the people in the pre-islamic pagan era masha allah in other
[3:09]words he's a wikipedia in and of himself he carries such great
[3:15]wealth of knowledge how does the prophet respond to that again we
[3:20]need to be able before i tell you the actual prophetic statement
[3:25]regarding this we need to reach a level of appreciation for true
[3:35]authentic knowledge and the level of maturity so that we're able to
[3:44]distinguish these kinds of sciences or what i like to call pseudosciences
[3:47]from real authentic useful sciences i talked about this last night when
[3:55]i said that ultimately we as individuals have a limited amount of
[4:04]resources that have been made available to us whether it is our
[4:08]time notice how many people how many organizations how many corporations how
[4:13]many governments how many entities out there are all vying to get
[4:21]your attention in fact in the media business when they talk about
[4:23]ratings for a tv show when they talk about the number of
[4:27]people that have watched the pilot for a series for example which
[4:30]is a key determining factor for the media executives to decide whether
[4:36]or not the series should be renewed for another season right when
[4:39]they talk about the views the statistics the viewership they talk about
[4:47]eyeballs i mean what does that tell you about the way the
[4:52]media looks at individuals you are not a person to them you're
[4:56]just a set of eyeballs you are just someone who is there
[5:03]to consume their content if that content has purely commercial value in
[5:08]their eyes then that's all they care about it's to try and
[5:12]get as many people to tune in as many people to watch
[5:15]this show and if that means infusing the show with all kinds
[5:21]of garbage and i'm not just talking about the fictitious aspect of
[5:27]it i'm not talking about how fantastical the storyline the plot line
[5:31]happens to be i'm talking about actually putting the stuff that they
[5:34]know will attract more eyeballs they know will attract more people into
[5:38]watching the show isn't it pathetic subhanallah i didn't want to say
[5:45]this but we're on the subject and we have this is a
[5:47]pertinent problem this is a cancer and metastasis this is a disease
[5:54]that needs to be addressed isn't it pathetic that we as a
[5:59]nation comprised of no less than four to five hundred million people
[6:04]all over the world the followers of the bait were such a
[6:13]strong community spread out across the entire planet from as far away
[6:20]as barbados which is a country that i'll be the first to
[6:24]admit i cannot identify on a map i do know that it's
[6:28]in the approximate region in south america the caribbean islands but exactly
[6:33]where it is i have no idea but i do know and
[6:36]i got to know an individual who's a shia of the herbert
[6:40]who lives in barbados and he told me that he actually attends
[6:43]one of our classes online he said there's only four of us
[6:47]on this island from as far away as that place all the
[6:50]way down to the small island archipelago of fiji the first country
[7:00]on which the sun rises you have the shia of the bay
[7:02]spread out across the entire planet such a strong presence we're powerful
[7:07]in terms of our numbers we're powerful in terms of our wealth
[7:10]and our resources we have all of this and yet it would
[7:15]take a fatwa from america to say whether you can watch a
[7:20]certain streaming service online or not and then the entire world is
[7:27]an uproar the entire community is so super confused say it i'm
[7:31]getting messages i'm getting phone calls should we cancel our subscriptions should
[7:34]we not cancel our subscriptions what exactly does this say you're talking
[7:38]about i'm not listen calm down you should be able to tell
[7:44]for yourself whether or not this is detrimental to your faith and
[7:47]to your values it shouldn't take a manager to tell you that
[7:52]this is morally repugnant that this is there's something wrong deep within
[7:57]this the structure that there is an agenda behind every movie every
[8:04]series every single show that they produce you know that i know
[8:09]that why is it that we'd have to be so immature and
[8:16]so they look at you as a set of eyeballs how many
[8:20]can we get to tune in how can we make sure that
[8:25]more people watch the show by adding elements which merely put the
[8:33]show in a different age bracket so it goes from being suitable
[8:40]for teenagers for example or suitable for children it just gets bumped
[8:45]up one category into mature audiences because of all the filth and
[8:53]immorality that gets spewed inside these programs and we just fall right
[8:57]into it of course it gets normalized before of course it gets
[9:03]more and more mundane we become desensitized to it did you know
[9:09]that this word that i just used desensitization is actually in their
[9:15]manifesto we live in a world where you can't even speak up
[9:24]openly you can't even express yourself even from a purely religious perspective
[9:29]but that's why people like me and people in my position would
[9:35]have to rely on you we'd have to rely on your intelligence
[9:39]on your do care about your own faith and your own values
[9:47]to not be naive about these things to sober up and wake
[9:53]up and smell the coffee says if you're sleeping if you've got
[10:06]your head stuck in the sand if you're the boiling frog which
[10:12]is one of my favorite metaphors and i've spoken so much about
[10:18]it i won't even explain it i'll have you google it if
[10:19]we happen to be the boiling frog in that pot of water
[10:24]that's increasing in its temperature so gradually and so slowly that we
[10:30]have no idea what's going on and that we're being cooked right
[10:34]before our two eyes the enemy is wide awake you may be
[10:44]asleep you may be thinking it's all hunky-dory that ah this is
[10:49]just a harmless show it's a harmless program it's a harmless website
[10:52]it's a harmless phone it's a harmless computer it's a harmless world
[10:55]it's a harmless everything but your enemy is wide awake your enemy
[11:00]is plotting against you i'm not one of those paranoid types i'm
[11:04]not a conspiracy theorist these are the words of emil i'm relating
[11:09]to you the enemy is awake 24 7 plotting and scheming and
[11:18]creating an agenda for the next 50 years one of my favorite
[11:24]quotes is if you remember i don't want to get into the
[11:29]details but there was an incident so it involved the catholic church
[11:34]and the child abuse scandal a few years back and one of
[11:40]the people who spoke on behalf of the church who was trying
[11:43]to sort of sweep things under the carpet and make sure that
[11:49]there are no repercussions as far as the church was concerned he
[11:52]came out and said the catholic church thinks in centuries while you
[12:00]and i are too busy in our own little pathetic fights with
[12:08]our friends and family while you and i are busy creating enmities
[12:13]and antagonisms over which you follow and so on and so forth
[12:20]the other side thinks in centuries as in what are we going
[12:25]to do in the 22nd century how will we implement this agenda
[12:37]is presented with a man who's a professor doctor what does he
[12:43]know he knows poetry he knows genealogy he knows a lot of
[12:46]stories masha allah he's very well spoken he's extremely articulate he would
[12:52]make the perfect speaker what does rasulullah say in response he said
[13:05]the prophet immediately opens a new category of science and he says
[13:12]this knowledge that this person has fits into this category what is
[13:18]it he said if you don't know this then you've lost nothing
[13:23]so what if you don't happen to be an expert on let's
[13:30]say medieval war armor if you're not an expert in how a
[13:37]microphone is built who cares so what there's plenty of other people
[13:41]who are experts in this field if you happen to need it
[13:44]there are others you can consult them and if you do possess
[13:55]it you don't get anything out of it now that is not
[14:01]to say that if you possess this knowledge you couldn't monetize it
[14:05]because we live in a world where you can pretty much monetize
[14:11]any garbage we live in a world where you could get well
[14:14]not you someone could get together with their friends and do the
[14:19]stupidest things to each other post that on youtube end up making
[14:25]thousands and thousands of dollars so you can monetize whatever you want
[14:29]that's not what the prophet is talking about money is not a
[14:35]value here wealth is not a value how much you can make
[14:41]out of it is not the criteria he says this is useless
[14:45]in other words at its essence it's useless at its essence it's
[14:52]valueless in other words this kind of knowledge doesn't make you a
[15:00]better person that's kind of what i'm trying to say in a
[15:04]nutshell possessing this doesn't make you any better than someone who lacks
[15:10]this knowledge now you might be thinking well what about all the
[15:13]professions what about all the trades all the skills that so many
[15:16]people have if i learn the skill and the profession of plumbing
[15:22]for example or if i was into becoming a mechanic or if
[15:25]i wanted to be a teacher or if i wanted to be
[15:27]a tailor and so on and so forth do those sciences also
[15:33]fall into the same category the answer is that those sciences in
[15:39]and of themselves don't have any inherent value but they do become
[15:46]valuable from a secondary perspective in other words because learning the ins
[15:51]and outs of a car's engine allows me to become a mechanic
[15:57]and therefore work and earn an honest living therefore it's good but
[16:02]in and of itself imagine if somebody has a habit of knowing
[16:07]all the details about a car's engine you would say to them
[16:11]come on man i'm sure there's better things you can do with
[16:14]your life you see what i mean so if this science is
[16:18]something that allows you to work and earn an honest and legitimate
[16:27]living provide for yourself your family then it makes it good otherwise
[16:30]by itself it doesn't have any inherent value which is why if
[16:37]you look at the fatihan in the section that deals with we
[16:49]have this dua narrated it's beautiful and it also helps shed light
[16:56]on this point that we've been talking about you say allah refuge
[17:06]in you in other words this is such a demon such a
[17:12]dangerous state of mind that you have no recourse you have no
[17:15]option but to seek refuge in allah subhanahu wa ta'ala i'm not
[17:23]sure if i'm conveying the depth of the matter here a refugee
[17:27]is someone who runs from what from a threat to their lives
[17:32]in this case you are seeking refugee status and you're seeking asylum
[17:37]with who with god over what over these things number one minefield
[17:46]from a soul that has an insatiable desire that is never content
[17:57]whatever i get there's more than i want to and from a
[18:09]heart that never bows down a heart that lacks fear from allah
[18:14]subhanahu wa a heart that never breaks and therefore an eye that
[18:23]never tears up number and i seek refuge in you from a
[18:35]knowledge a science that has no benefit that provides me with no
[18:43]value it's just something i know a lot of our hobbies fall
[18:49]into that am i saying that you can't have a hobby am
[18:51]i saying that you can't be interested in something outside of work
[18:54]i'm not saying that what i am saying is given the limitations
[18:59]imposed on our resources on our time on our energy given the
[19:04]fact that we ultimately have to spend a minimum of what six
[19:09]seven hours to sleep that's what they're saying nowadays anyway if you
[19:12]ask a doctor what is a healthy amount of sleep they'll say
[19:17]seven hours right i have my own theory about that but that's
[19:20]another issue the hadith says a person who oversleeps person who sleeps
[19:30]too much will come on the day of judgment and he will
[19:34]be a beggar imagine like everybody has something everybody's built they've invested
[19:40]their time and their effort that they they have things that they've
[19:44]received in the form of remuneration on the day of judgment but
[19:47]i will be the one running from person the person begging them
[19:51]to give me give me some of their rewards give me something
[19:55]i'll be the beggar but anyway given the limitations imposed on our
[20:01]time and resources how much time can we allocate to these hobbies
[20:06]how much time should we allocate to watching tv series and movies
[20:13]and so on sure we all need a little time to let
[20:19]some steam off sure we need time to engage in you know
[20:24]things that bring us pleasure that are within the confines of what
[20:30]is halal we need these things but ultimately as our traditions stipulate
[20:34]you need to please yourself you need to seek pleasure so that
[20:38]you can refuel you can re-energize and then put all that energy
[20:44]you've just accumulated back into what into the service of allah subhanahu
[20:47]ta'ala in other words your primary subhanallah i sometimes come across people
[20:54]in this hussaini as well as others and you look at this
[20:57]person they're not the kind of people that are goofing off or
[21:02]being dull bludgers as they say they're not the kind of people
[21:08]that have put all of their uh responsibilities onto the shoulders of
[21:12]other people they're not living off of other people's work they also
[21:15]have a job they also have a family they also have responsibilities
[21:19]but when you look at them you realize that their primary concern
[21:25]in life is the service and it takes a special kind of
[21:30]person to be that special kind of mindset to put you in
[21:34]that position obviously tawfiq has to be there god has to give
[21:40]you the backing to be placed in the right position at the
[21:42]right time at the right place so that you could be at
[21:46]the service of the imam of your time but you you have
[21:50]to in the law because you have to start there you have
[21:57]to start in your outlook the way you see life the way
[21:59]you prioritize your time and your energy and your effort so the
[22:06]prophet said this science it doesn't hurt anyone if they don't have
[22:09]it it doesn't benefit anyone if they do then the prophet elaborated
[22:18]further he said sciences come in three categories imma you learn the
[22:31]quran you try and solidify your understanding of the quran you take
[22:35]out those verses that are ambiguous how many of us find that
[22:41]when we open the quran to read there are so many things
[22:46]there that just don't make sense to us not that they contradict
[22:51]logic we just don't understand what allah is talking about and that
[22:56]is a testament of our ignorance it shows that this was never
[23:01]a priority for us for me to learn what the quran has
[23:03]to say is not exactly something that i feel i should do
[23:09]before i start to get into other sciences and hobbies and use
[23:13]useless skills right so number one the holy prophet says if there
[23:21]are ambiguous verses if there are things in the quran that don't
[23:24]make sense to you learn understand ask the exegests refer to the
[23:30]commentary figure out what it has to say your maraja today are
[23:35]available basically 24 7.
[23:36]you could write to them you could email them you could inquire
[23:40]back in the day people had to really suffer the amount of
[23:46]effort that had to be put in to learn to acquire these
[23:49]books i don't want to even get into that but i think
[23:50]you know what i'm talking about nowadays it's available it's at your
[23:53]fingertips you can basically ask whatever you want and be informed of
[24:01]the answers of all your questions number one number two the prophet
[24:07]says and shariat what is halal what is haram what is what
[24:13]is forbidden all these things that we call these jurors prudential matters
[24:21]the vast majority or the bulk of which are printed in the
[24:27]form of amelia by whoever your merchant happens to be how many
[24:31]have actually picked up that book and read through it how many
[24:33]have had classes where they learn all these things again the prophet
[24:37]says number one it's the quran number two it's what your obligation
[24:40]is in this life what you're supposed to do and what you're
[24:44]supposed to avoid when you want to learn how to drive what
[24:46]do you do the first thing you do is you sit for
[24:50]a knowledge test but before that you have to read an entire
[24:54]book a manual that tells you what you can and cannot do
[24:56]as a driver in this country there are particular rules that don't
[24:59]apply in other countries you have to understand what the yellow light
[25:03]means what the amber light means and so on and so you
[25:07]have to learn whether you can cross these lanes you can't all
[25:09]these things you have to you have to learn them you have
[25:13]to ask if you think about it the amount of energy the
[25:14]amount of hours you have to put in just to be able
[25:18]to sit behind the wheel in this country is just mind-boggling and
[25:22]yet we do it why because we feel there's always this sense
[25:26]in our minds that oh we associate driving with freedom if i'm
[25:31]able to drive then i can have my own car i can
[25:35]look super cool and i can go wherever i want whenever i
[25:37]want of course the reality is not that we all know that
[25:40]once you get your license it's just another thing it's just another
[25:44]piece of paper or plastic but in our mind that's what society's
[25:47]conditioned us to think that oh yeah if you're able to drive
[25:53]all your problems are over your problems problems are just about to
[25:57]start they're about to begin now you have to think about getting
[26:03]a car and you have to think about all the plethora of
[26:05]problems that come with owning your own car then the prophet said
[26:13]was [Music] meaning etiquettes so either the quran or the wajabat or
[26:22]the etiquettes of life what is good what is moral what is
[26:27]less than moral then the prophet said anything other than these three
[26:35]types of sciences is an extra and if it benefits you in
[26:42]the sense that it allows you to earn a living then it's
[26:45]good if it doesn't then it's useless now there are some sciences
[26:53]which are not just useless but detrimental and dangerous for example sorcery
[27:06]magic i'm talking about black magic not little magical tricks that you
[27:10]do in kids birthday parties by the way these things are haram
[27:14]to acquire these sciences is forbidden in islam is there value in
[27:22]it there may be are people actually able to manipulate others into
[27:25]loving them and to hating each other into doing this and to
[27:29]doing that maybe is it allowed no it's not so we have
[27:35]to go back to the knowledge of the prophets what did the
[27:41]prophets come to teach again we spoke a little bit about this
[27:45]last night i just want to go on to in a different
[27:48]direction tonight the prophets came to teach us things that were above
[27:56]and beyond listen carefully i'm choosing my words very meticulously the prophets
[28:02]didn't just come to reveal reality allow me to elaborate some philosophers
[28:20]have objected on the question of why we need prophets and messengers
[28:26]and apostles which is a question that's been around for as long
[28:31]as people have lived on this earth why do we need a
[28:33]prophet it's a very fundamental question why couldn't god just reveal a
[28:41]book and the book would have the major primary instructions that god
[28:48]has sent and that would be the end of the story you
[28:54]want to follow this you can if you don't want to follow
[28:57]it well you'll face the consequences why prophets what did prophets bring
[29:03]us that was so valuable so some philosophers have said if the
[29:07]prophets came to reveal reality in other words they came to tell
[29:14]us things that we don't presently know then they're not doing much
[29:24]are they because with further scientific endeavor and exploration at some point
[29:29]will get to what the prophets came to teach us and in
[29:34]fact this is something that i've heard even muslim philosophers say unfortunately
[29:39]the connotation here the suggestion behind this statement is that human beings
[29:52]are on a an upward trajectory humans are developing little by little
[29:59]year after year century after century humanity is progressing right and i
[30:05]think this is what most of you think as well are human
[30:09]beings progressing or are they regressing are they moving forward or are
[30:15]they going backwards a smart person including all of you here would
[30:18]ask the question well it depends on your definition of forward and
[30:21]backward it depends on what you mean by progress versus regress if
[30:27]you're talking about humanity being able to come up with a with
[30:31]a newer better more advanced version of smartphones year after year then
[30:37]yeah sure we're moving forward but if it comes to morality if
[30:43]we're talking about humanity then humanity is not moving forward and i
[30:49]can bring you a thousand different pieces of evidence to back this
[30:54]point but i think you're intelligent enough to figure that out on
[30:56]your own are we actually moving forward i was sent between the
[31:20]two epics of ignorance when i say i think you can all
[31:25]relate this notion back to the most macabre and grotesque stories of
[31:36]barbarity that we associate with the pagan era before the revelation of
[31:41]islam you'll automatically think of how little beautiful girls would be buried
[31:50]alive because in that society it was seen as shameful to have
[31:54]a girl grow up and become an adult woman right we're talking
[31:59]about being the worst savages that humanity's ever heard of we're talking
[32:04]about the worst of the worst the scum of the earth right
[32:07]rasulullah says i was sent between two epics of jahiliyyah between two
[32:16]eras of ignorance and the second is worse than the first so
[32:20]are we moving forward now this is why when it comes to
[32:31]picking what we're supposed to learn we have to be extra extra
[32:37]careful i take you back to the question i asked earlier do
[32:40]prophets simply reveal reality no because if it was just a matter
[32:46]of revealing reality to us if it was just a matter of
[32:50]oh don't kill your girls and that's it then yeah humanity should
[32:53]be progressing forward not regressing backwards so that's not it in fact
[32:59]look at how the quran describes this allah says we have sent
[33:08]this messenger listen very carefully these prophets came to teach you things
[33:17]now unfortunately i'm not a very big fan of translations of the
[33:23]quran because over and over again when i refer back to translations
[33:26]i see mistake after mistake sometimes intentional mistakes sometimes unintentional mistakes in
[33:32]this case i looked up one of the translations and i think
[33:35]they pretty much say the same thing is translated as to teach
[33:42]you the things that you did not know but that's not what
[33:46]the quran is saying anyone familiar with the arabic language knows that
[33:49]the quran is saying something else which means the things that you
[33:56]would never have learned on your own it's not a matter of
[34:04]time it's a matter of impossibility that's what the prophets came to
[34:08]teach you see there are things in the quran which you can
[34:10]explore on your own and figure out for example go travel on
[34:19]the earth and learn about the people that lived before you and
[34:25]what happened to them the rejecters the liars the imposters i was
[34:30]reading through uh some of the archaeological finds about the people of
[34:36]sodom and gomorrah and it's really quite fascinating to learn the way
[34:45]the quran describes the punishment that was sent on the people of
[34:48]saddam which by the way you've probably never heard this before but
[34:51]there's a hadith that says allah subhanahu wa punished the people of
[34:58]sodom and he destroyed them when in fact he has never destroyed
[35:02]another nation for the sin of adultery in other words as evil
[35:08]and as immoral as adultery happens to be what the people of
[35:13]sodom did was much worse so this is in case you will
[35:18]you know inevitably you'll come across people who tell you so what
[35:22]no i mean you know there is sin and then again there
[35:26]is another sin and we're all sinners at the end of the
[35:31]day the hadith says no there are different kinds of sins there
[35:33]are sins that are unforgivable there are sins that are punishable not
[35:37]just in the afterlife but in this world allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[35:45]completely the people of sodom allah says when our command came when
[36:03]the time was right we turned that entire city over on its
[36:07]head upside down and we started to reign upon them burned clay
[36:15]now the archaeological finds because the quran says go look where are
[36:20]the people of sodom the actual city of sodom and gomorrah there
[36:24]is a difference of opinion as to exactly where it is the
[36:27]precise location that is but i think most archaeologists agree that it
[36:32]sits on the banks of the dead sea in other words it's
[36:37]between jordan and palestine and christian evangelical archaeologists have gone in and
[36:45]they've explored the land and it's absolutely mesmerizing it's terrifying but it's
[36:51]mesmerizing on the other hand because you look at this and you
[36:57]see almost like a city that's like a really ancient city this
[36:59]is what it looks like anyway that's covered with layers upon layers
[37:05]of ash and in fact that's what the archaeologists say they say
[37:08]there's a lot of ash in it there's sand of course but
[37:11]on top of the sand where did the ash come from right
[37:15]they say this ash could only and and the thing that amazes
[37:22]them is that the only way you could get ash is if
[37:25]you burn something right so something must have burned here what burnt
[37:28]how did it happen they in fact say that there are relics
[37:32]of up to a million people there in this stretch of desert
[37:37]and you have all these structures and the structures look like massive
[37:41]mansions and palaces and whatnot but in fact you know they just
[37:45]you know look like these old buildings with a lot of ash
[37:50]on them and the amazing thing is they have brimstone brimstone by
[37:54]the way is the old word used for sulfur and if you
[37:58]know anything about sulfur it's a highly flammable substance in other words
[38:03]you can literally just light it up and you get this deep
[38:08]dark blue fire coming out of it like i've never seen anything
[38:10]like it you can't light up a piece of rock but when
[38:14]it comes to sulfur or what the bible calls brimstone in the
[38:17]old language and you see this scattered all across sodom in in
[38:24]what resembles a ball that's that's white and again is very very
[38:31]highly flammable go look what happened to them so that's one kind
[38:36]of knowledge that you find in the quran then again you have
[38:40]another kind that as i said earlier we have no access to
[38:42]without the prophets there's no way you can learn about these things
[38:45]for example what is the spirit what is the soul the soul
[38:56]is something that no one can understand no scientist no one is
[39:01]able to figure out exactly what it is unless you have access
[39:04]to the world of the unseen you have access to metaphysical sciences
[39:08]which is what the prophets had right number two um how could
[39:16]you learn about the day of judgment how could you learn about
[39:19]the afterlife without having access to knowledge of the unseen that doesn't
[39:24]come from empirical science it doesn't come from experimental sciences you have
[39:30]to go and refer to the prophets and messengers and so on
[39:34]and so forth all of these things are exclusive to prophets they're
[39:37]exclusive to the quran they're exclusive to the bait who are the
[39:44]successors of all of the prophets now this is i think again
[39:54]i've made my case that we need to learn we really need
[39:56]to pick up books and find suitable teachers we need to enroll
[40:04]in courses something we did quite recently some of you might actually
[40:08]know about this is a seminary course under the beautiful title of
[40:13]uh if i may say so john the martyr academic seminary named
[40:18]after john the slave of abba abdullah hussain who was killed on
[40:26]the day of it's a free course it is i think combines
[40:30]in it things that were unimaginable just 10 years ago 10 years
[40:34]ago i travel the world and i visit different communities and i
[40:38]lecture all over the place it's one of the perks one of
[40:42]the privileges of what i do and so many people at the
[40:47]end of every series approach me and say how do we learn
[40:50]more how do we i mean we've barely scratched the surface how
[40:54]can we enroll in the islamic seminary how could we go back
[41:00]and learn the teachings and traditions of and my response to them
[41:03]was almost universally listen you can pack up and go to the
[41:09]holy city of hom karbala elsewhere you can do that but at
[41:12]the end of the day there's going to be so many challenges
[41:15]so many obstacles in your way your families your community your job
[41:19]prospects your all these your studies all these things will present a
[41:25]challenge and so my advice to anyone who asked that question would
[41:27]be look you're pretty much on your own you have to go
[41:32]find the sources consult but ultimately you have to do your own
[41:35]learning now things are different now you have all of those sciences
[41:40]customized for a western audience being presented to you from the comfort
[41:46]of your own living room or bedroom online for free by qualified
[41:52]scholars by teachers that have spent decades in the islamic seminary what
[41:55]more could you want right of course alhamdulillah we have a lot
[41:59]of people that have enrolled but this is something that i definitely
[42:02]encourage you to sign up on just look it up online john
[42:06]the martyr seminary or academic seminary because once you do that then
[42:13]you qualify for an incredibly lofty position and i'll just mention this
[42:20]hadith and wrap up in sha allah at tabar says in his
[42:26]book incredible book highly recommended he quotes imam al-hassan as quoting his
[42:41]father imam al-hadi who quoted his father who quoted his father all
[42:44]the way back to rasulullah he said we have two kinds of
[43:00]orphans number one is an orphan who doesn't have one or both
[43:03]of their parents this orphan deserves the utmost care and compassion this
[43:16]orphan whoever sponsors them whoever looks after them orphans are so special
[43:22]the traditions tell us that if you so much as wipe your
[43:23]hands on their heads it softens your heart you acquire hoshua that's
[43:31]how blessed these children are rasulullah said you've all heard this hadith
[43:40]kaha and whoever sponsors an orphan meaning takes care of them not
[43:47]just pays a monthly fee but actually takes them under their wing
[43:51]so to speak and our cafeteria and the prophet put both of
[43:56]his index fingers against each other and the prophet in another hadith
[44:01]says and i'm not saying not like these two fingers right the
[44:04]middle and the index finger where one is slightly taller than the
[44:09]other no no like these two in other words will you will
[44:13]be with me on the day of judgment in the same position
[44:19]so it's incredibly special but he says whoever looks after who are
[44:44]not just disconnected from their parents but they are disconnected from their
[44:49]imam menin the prophet says number one this person has to be
[45:02]yata'allamur you have to have you have to acquire the sciences of
[45:10]the imams of the aruba you have to become learned by yourself
[45:14]but once you do that you take a group of people who
[45:19]have been severed from their imam who have been disconnected from their
[45:23]master the imam of the time and you also teach them you
[45:28]also impart upon them the things that you have learned in this
[45:34]country as well as the united states and many other countries there's
[45:36]an organization called big brother big sister program have you heard about
[45:42]that essentially what this is it's a mentorship program and this is
[45:47]something that i've been quite passionate about over the last couple of
[45:50]years and i wanna talk about it in an open forum like
[45:55]this so that it becomes a substance for conversation a topic of
[46:00]conversation with the hope of us actually implementing this in the near
[46:07]future essentially what they do is every single adult who fits and
[46:13]ticks a certain number of boxes fits a certain number of criteria
[46:18]they do a background check they you know find out their marital
[46:22]status their financial status and so on then they say that as
[46:26]an adult who is well-rounded who is relatively successful and so forth
[46:33]you should take one or two younger members of the audience and
[46:38]bring them under your wing look after them the imam in fact
[46:43]in this prophetic hadith he uses this term he says that they
[46:49]are our orphans who are in your care if this is how
[46:53]we looked at other people especially people who were younger than us
[46:56]imagine the beauty of the society that we can build the prophet
[47:01]says that if you acquire knowledge number one and number two you
[47:07]become a big brother to at least one person one individual who's
[47:11]potentially a lost soul we have people like that in our own
[47:15]families unfortunately brothers and sisters we've have we've created a society for
[47:20]ourselves where we outsource everything to someone else there's this mentality that
[47:26]if i want my kids to know about islam i send them
[47:30]to saturday school right but as far as me learning and then
[47:33]teaching my own children that's not something we're we're going to invest
[47:39]in this is exactly what rasulullah is suggesting that we do is
[47:41]commanding us to do he says number one learn number two take
[47:48]one or two three four whatever number of people you can take
[47:52]under your wing teach them guide them help them you don't need
[47:57]to be a scholar to do that you don't need to be
[48:01]a senior alim to do that yes you have to know the
[48:04]basics yes you have to have a good understanding of of the
[48:07]fundamental tenets of this religion which is by the way what this
[48:10]course teaches the one that i talked about john the martyr academy
[48:15]there's a course on theology which i did over a period of
[48:17]i think about three months there's a course on eschatology highly popular
[48:22]course that deals with questions about the afterlife death the previous worlds
[48:27]we've been through the worlds we will go into after this one
[48:30]our journey throughout the cosmos right there's a course on jurisprudence all
[48:35]kinds of courses again all available for free all you have to
[48:39]do is enroll commit and sit down and watch and learn there's
[48:42]all kinds of other material that have been made available each lecture
[48:47]is prepared and then you have the summary gets sent over you
[48:51]online you get to see you get to sit for tests you
[48:52]can do essays and so on and so forth learn and then
[48:57]take other people under your wing teach them this person will be
[49:15]so elevated and such highly regarded because you have taught you have
[49:19]taken care of the orphans of the elderly the lost souls the
[49:24]ones that needed guidance allah will glorify you and the amount of
[49:29]reward that you will get far outweighs what you would get by
[49:34]simply sponsoring an actual orphan because an actual orphan belongs to their
[49:41]parents that have passed whereas here you're dealing with the orphans of
[49:48]rasulullah didn't in a conversation with the holy prophet the prophet said
[49:52]to him you and i are the fathers of this nation anyway
[50:01]let's go to a place that broke the heart of the bait
[50:11]even more than karbala when they asked imam ali where did you
[50:18]suffer the most what was the hardest place for you to be
[50:24]in the imam responded by saying asham [Music] only god knows what
[50:31]is buried deep into these sighs that are emerging from the blessed
[50:38]tongue of imam with every utterance of the name only allah knows
[50:48]what the imam is referring to what they saw what they experienced
[50:56]when they first arrived to the main gate of the city of
[51:05]sham yazid ordered the caravan to stop some have said for 24
[51:10]hours others have said for three full days they just simply stopped
[51:18]them outside on the main gate why for two reasons the first
[51:21]reason was that they wanted to get ready they had to put
[51:26]up the festivities they were throwing the biggest party the city had
[51:30]ever seen and they needed time to do all of that they
[51:34]needed to bring out the musical instruments they needed to bring out
[51:38]the drums they needed to bring out the flutes that was the
[51:44]first reason the second reason is that the caravan of the sacred
[51:48]severed heads had yet to arrive because the caravan carrying the heads
[51:54]of the martyrs took a different route than the one taken by
[51:59]the captives the women the children and that's why many of them
[52:03]hadn't seen the sacred head since the day of one wicked man
[52:10]approached and when he got to the main gate as they were
[52:15]about to merge these two caravans were about to meet each other
[52:18]he screamed here we are bringing you the women and the children
[52:42]and the heads of the wicked worms of the liars people started
[53:00]pelting them with stones they threw garbage over the heads of the
[53:07]family of rasulullah from the rooftop this elderly man while everyone was
[53:21]busy he came and approached imam zayn the imam looked at this
[53:45]man he must have seen something in this man's heart he said
[53:54]have you read have you read the verse in which allah says
[54:15]he said yes i have read that verse he said let me
[54:20]ask you about another one have you read the verse where allah
[54:35]what's that got to do we are the prophet's children we are
[55:05]the prophet's family the old man started to cry he said but
[55:33]before [Music] [Music] [Applause] whatever yes
