[1:45]we owe so much to imam asadaq alaihis salam but especially in
[1:50]relation to his immense knowledge and wisdom for indeed the words alm
[1:58]and hikmam are two words always associated and continue to be associated
[2:04]with imam asadaq alaihis salaam when one looks at the corpus of
[2:09]shiite traditions you'll find that the most hadith which are narrated are
[2:14]the hadith of imam asadaq alaihis salam if one was to for
[2:19]example explore the four canonical works within the school of ahlul bayt
[2:25]al kafi of sheikh al kulaini you'll find that the imam has
[2:36]the most hadith narrated in these four works 31,451 hadith from imam
[2:46]asadaq alone indeed when you compare this to the other imams of
[2:52]ahlul bayt salaam wa salaam wa alaihim you'll find that the closest
[2:57]to him in terms of those four texts is imam al baqir
[3:02]alaihis salam his father with just over 8,000 hadith then after that
[3:08]rasoolallah sallallahu alaihi wa'alehi imam amir al mumine alaihis salam and then
[3:13]after that imam al qa'alim alaihis salam therefore when you look at
[3:18]this you find that the number 31,451 a hadith is absolutely staggering
[3:28]i would even conclude that if a person was to add up
[3:32]all the traditions of the yahili batesallahu alaihi wa sallam who alaihim
[3:36]they would still come to less than the number of narrations of
[3:40]imam asada alaihi salaam yes there may be certain narrations within the
[3:45]corpus of these four works which may be for example repeated but
[3:50]you found that imam asad alaihis salam was able to exploit fully
[3:56]the relatively little freedom that he had i stress on relatively little
[4:02]because there's this source which goes around which always seeks to claim
[4:09]that imam asadaq alaihis salam had so much freedom in his time
[4:15]imam asadaq alaihis salam did not have so much freedom in his
[4:20]time rather when there were certain internal strife between the umayyads for
[4:25]example or for example you had the revolution that we discussed yesterday
[4:31]the abbasids overtaking the umayyads it was only in those periods that
[4:36]there was relatively some freedom for imam asada alaihis salam otherwise imam
[4:42]asadaq like all the imams of ahlul bayt alaihis salam you will
[4:46]always find that they had someone who was watching them that there
[4:51]was always someone scrutinizing their movements looking at their whereabouts but that
[4:57]imam sadiq alaihis salam maybe had a little bit more freedom than
[5:02]the others because when we're looking at the numbers for example you
[5:06]find imam assad at thirty one thousand four hundred and fifty one
[5:10]imam al baqar 8,000 imam zain al abedin imam al hussain as
[5:17]well as imam al hassan if you add all the hadith between
[5:21]them you will not get even a thousand hadith what does that
[5:26]highlight to us in those four canonical works that the time after
[5:31]imam ali alaihis salam was a difficult time for the imams of
[5:35]al bayt to be able to openly talk about the sciences of
[5:40]the religion of islam because the umayyads were in power and the
[5:44]umayyads were actively killing those who were even sources to be able
[5:52]to narrate from the imams if there is an imam and he's
[5:55]teaching a class you need there to be people who are under
[6:00]his mambar when he's teaching they have to be students there if
[6:04]you're gonna massacre those students then you're not gonna get the hadith
[6:08]of that imam let alone if you don't even allow that imam
[6:12]to be able to openly teach it was a far different cry
[6:18]from what you had with imam sadiq alaihis salam with imam sadiq
[6:21]what did you have you had people in kufa who were talking
[6:26]about narrating from imam sadiq alaihis salam actively people in medina people
[6:33]in different parts of the islamic world that's why it's no surprise
[6:36]for us when we see a narrator such as the son of
[6:41]washa when he says that i went to the mosque of kufa
[6:46]and in the mosque i heard 900 narrators who said hadafani 900
[6:57]who were that ready to say that we are narrating from imam
[7:01]asadaq alaihis salam i ask you in the time of imam al
[7:05]hasan alaihis salam were you able to do that no in the
[7:08]time of for example imam al hussain alaihis salam were you able
[7:11]to do that they were massacring shia left right and center whereas
[7:16]in the time of imam saddai alaihi salaam 31 and a half
[7:21]thousand hadith nearly have reached us whether it's on the quran whether
[7:27]it's in the area of tafsir or taweel on the nassik and
[7:30]the mansourkh whether it's the area of theology it's in history ethics
[7:37]all of these different areas imam saddiq alaihi salaam left an unbelievable
[7:42]legacy and that's why the beauty of imam saddiq alaihis salam was
[7:46]to highlight to us something that we if we claim that we
[7:50]are the lovers of imam saddiq alaihis salam then what really has
[7:54]to be our symbol is our thirst for ilm and our thirst
[7:59]for hikma because it's unfortunate that in certain parts of the world
[8:03]where you have lovers of imam al saddai alaihi salaam you'll find
[8:07]that they hardly read any books there are certain followers of imam
[8:11]sadi alaihi salaam who don't read any books throughout the year they
[8:16]have no interest in reading yes they might go for example to
[8:19]lectures in muharram they might go to some lectures in shahramabad they
[8:23]might listen to some online majalis but if you were to ask
[8:27]them questions concerning for example the history and the seerah of rasoolallah
[8:33]sallallaho alaihe wa'alehi of the tafsir of the holy quran or for
[8:38]example ask them key questions relating to the theology of the school
[8:42]that they follow you'll find that unfortunately there are many who do
[8:46]not read any books on this area imam saad alaihisam even pointed
[8:50]that out that you can talk about me being a person of
[8:53]alm or that i am someone who is known for his wisdom
[8:58]but if you are not reading what i have left behind then
[9:03]at the end of the day you fall into that group who
[9:05]are the waste of time he said that people our followers are
[9:09]three scholars those who are studying and the third group are an
[9:15]absolute waste of time an absolute waste of space because then you
[9:19]as a human being are not really becoming you're not developing 31
[9:25]and a half thousand hadith of imam asadaq i ask many of
[9:29]the shia although imam asadaq is an imam whose knowledge humanity i
[9:34]ask many of the shia who are watching this how many hadith
[9:39]of imam asadaq alaihis salam have you read forget you can narrate
[9:44]forget that you memorized how many hadith of imam sadiq alaihis salam
[9:48]have you yourself read have you opened the works which were left
[9:54]behind with all the hadith of imam sadiq alaihis salam because believe
[10:00]you me i believe that one of our major problems in our
[10:03]communities comes because of a lack of reading and therefore a lack
[10:07]of ilm there are many decisions that we make had we read
[10:11]the wisdom of imam asada alaihis salam on that area on the
[10:15]subject of a political decision or an economic decision or even a
[10:20]domestic decision between ourselves and our wife between ourselves and our parents
[10:26]between ourselves and our children believe you me our life would be
[10:30]so much different but you ask many who call themselves jafari the
[10:35]jafari yeah you ask them how many hadith of imam asada alaihis
[10:39]salam have you read if there are 31 and a half thousand
[10:42]that have been left behind how many of you read you'll find
[10:45]some who'll tell you that listen i love imam asad i don't
[10:48]think i can narrate to you more than 10 don't narrate to
[10:51]me how many have you read there are certain works which are
[10:54]available now which open the doors for us to explore imam sallallahu
[10:59]alaihi salaam say for example you say al kafi is it not
[11:03]in english or you say that malayah adar al fakih is not
[11:06]in english or that tadeem or the istafsar or wasa al shia
[11:10]not in english or the bihar is not in english then okay
[11:14]go to a book like scales of wisdom pick up that book
[11:18]it's available in english and look at the different areas which imam
[11:22]asadaq has discussed as in imam asadaq was so right when he
[11:26]said that an orphan is not one without a mother or father
[11:31]an orphan is one without literature that's the reality you want to
[11:35]know what a yateem is a yateem isn't someone who you classify
[11:39]as someone without a mother or father it's someone without literature someone
[11:44]who cannot hold themselves with that strength of the wisdom of the
[11:49]quote of imam asada alaihis salam how many of you when you've
[11:53]quoted a hadith from imam ali alaihis salam have felt so good
[11:57]in the middle of that discussion you're speaking to non muslims and
[12:01]you say a line of imam ali alaihi salaam like imam ali's
[12:05]line people are of two types they are either your brothers in
[12:09]faith or your equals in humanity and you'll see a non muslim
[12:12]saying that's beautiful imagine we could do the same with imam asada
[12:16]alaihis salam imagine we were able to take the knowledge of imam
[12:20]asada both exoteric as well as esoteric when i'm talking tonight about
[12:26]the exoteric knowledge that's one part of the knowledge of imam asada
[12:29]alaihis salam and we're gonna have a few nights purely on the
[12:33]ilm and the hikam of imam asada alaihis salam tonight we look
[12:37]at that knowledge which was general for everybody muslim non muslim atheist
[12:42]those amongst the different sects of islam and then we'll look at
[12:46]the knowledge which is only for the initiates initiates in which sense
[12:51]those who were initiated who were able to bear the esoteric knowledge
[12:56]because there is some knowledge which is only for the khasa there
[13:00]is some knowledge for the am there is some knowledge for the
[13:03]general masses and even that knowledge is immense tonight let's explore this
[13:09]first angle that knowledge which was the general knowledge available for every
[13:15]human being muslim and non muslim alike and i'd like to do
[13:19]that in the following stages which line of imam ali alaihis salam
[13:25]did imam asadak alaihis salam repeat and how does this line highlight
[13:31]that imam asadak alaihis salam was not only infallible but knew every
[13:38]aspect of knowledge concerning the life of the human being number two
[13:44]and of the utmost importance how did his students maintain the knowledge
[13:50]of the imam and what did they narrate to us about the
[13:56]different discussions that the imam had number three how did the imam
[14:00]make clear the legal opinions of rasulullah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi in the
[14:08]school of ahlul bayaj especially on different areas such as which fish
[14:14]can be eaten and the areas of salah as well number four
[14:19]if any atheists wanted to have a discussion with the imam did
[14:23]he kick them out and say that no atheist is welcome or
[14:27]did he welcome the discussions of the atheists now five where are
[14:32]the traditions of imam asadaq alaihis salaam how can we get a
[14:37]hold of them what's been left behind and where have they been
[14:41]all compiled and are they all there for us number six how
[14:46]important were his sons in maintaining his traditions especially his son ali
[14:53]and his son musa and finally did the ummah honor those sons
[14:59]or did the ummah end up torturing and imprisoning the sons of
[15:04]knowledge let's examine this and dissect the topic in complete depth there
[15:09]is a line of imam ali alaihis salam that all of us
[15:13]have heard and all of us have always been inspired by which
[15:18]line the famous line when imam ali says ask me ask me
[15:27]before you lose me that famous line of imam ali alaihis salam
[15:32]is a line which highlighted that imam ali alaihis salam on the
[15:36]first level knew that every single question that you ask him he's
[15:42]able to answer because if you can come on for example in
[15:45]front of a whole community and say ask me ask me before
[15:49]you lose me there's no one around the time of imam ali
[15:52]alaihi salaam who's able to say that do you agree was there
[15:55]any other companion of rasulullah who said ask me ask me before
[16:05]you lose me there were companions around the time of imam ali
[16:09]alaihi salam who made it clear that if it wasn't for imam
[16:12]ali i would be perished let there not be a situation where
[16:16]imam ali alaihis salam is not here that imam ali is the
[16:20]most knowledgeable imam ali alaihis salam when he said ask me ask
[16:24]me before you lose me he continued by saying ask me anything
[16:30]about the day of judgment except that i'll be able to tell
[16:33]you about that thing that means that i have not just knowledge
[16:37]of the seen but knowledge of the unseen as well and that
[16:41]i had the access to that knowledge that others around me do
[16:46]not have likewise when he said that he then said ask me
[16:50]about any verse in the holy quran and i'll tell you whether
[16:55]it was revealed in the day or in the night on the
[16:58]plains or mountains when he says that again what's he saying the
[17:02]quran you people give a tafsir of the quran in many cases
[17:07]with your own humble opinion i am part of the family where
[17:11]the quran was revealed in their house when imam ali alaihis salam
[17:15]said that imam ali was making it clear that what differentiates the
[17:20]khalifa of allah on earth like imam ali alaihis salam is what
[17:26]is the fact that his ailm is higher than all the other
[17:31]creations around him therefore when imam ali alaihis salam said he was
[17:39]making clear that look my knowledge is different to yours your knowledge
[17:43]is acquired my knowledge is immediate you may gain knowledge through for
[17:51]example a class at tafsir session whereas i my knowledge comes to
[17:57]me inspired from allah subhanahu wa ta'ala someone for example says what
[18:03]do you mean we see in the holy quran that there are
[18:06]certain people who are not prophets of allah but the knowledge that
[18:11]they had is able to bring a throne from one side of
[18:15]the world to the other asif bin barghia was related to nabi
[18:20]sallam i ask all of you ibn barqiya is a nabi a
[18:24]rasool he is not he is a successor of a prophet asa
[18:29]ibn barqiya in the quran no muslim can deny that this person
[18:35]when nabi israel aman said who can bring me the queen of
[18:37]sheba's throne nobody can deny that at that moment when the jinn
[18:42]said i'll bring it to you now the queen of sheba's throne
[18:45]is where i'm sitting here on a throne on this mambar in
[18:49]london and i say to somebody if you don't mind i forgot
[18:52]my laptop in sydney can you make sure it reaches my mambar
[18:56]now someone will look at you and say what you're talking about
[18:59]how in god's name are we gonna have that laptop here but
[19:03]of course a person will say to you that i can have
[19:07]it with you in three days four days five days at that
[19:12]time one of the jinn said to nabi sulayman i'll have it
[19:15]to you before you even get up who turned around and said
[19:19]i'll bring it to you before you blink asun barghiya that moment
[19:23]you found that the throne of sheba was in front of nabi
[19:26]sulayman alaihi salam hey what did we find we found someone who
[19:29]had some ilm whether it's called ilham whether it's called ilm la
[19:34]dunni whatever name you want to give it allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[19:39]if he decides can give you a certain portion of ilm others
[19:43]cannot get access to that person the successor of sulayman had some
[19:50]ilm of the kitab how about those who have the ilm of
[19:52]the kitab those who have the full knowledge given to them by
[19:57]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala like the prophet peace be upon his family
[20:00]like imam ali alaihi salam therefore when imam ali alaihi salam said
[20:04]saluni saluni qablan taft aduni there are many shia who believe that
[20:09]he's the only one who said that do you agree sometimes you'll
[20:13]hear that imam ali alaihi salam said ask me before you lose
[20:16]me i know the secrets of the heavens the paths of the
[20:18]heavens more than the paths of the earth some shia believe that
[20:21]imam ali alaihi salam they thought is the only one who said
[20:24]that would you believe that non shia narrator said that imam masadaq
[20:32]alaihis salam also said salooni salooni tabla and tafta duni where the
[20:39]famous work of the dahabi which many would have read in that
[20:45]work you'll find a narration salih the son of abi aswad alongside
[20:51]a narration of who as well amr the son of zayd ibn
[20:54]abi makdam you'll find what was it that narration in that narration
[21:02]the narration is clear for all to see that he says and
[21:06]this is the line that ibn abi makdam uses he says that
[21:11]when i looked at jafar ibn muhammad when i would look at
[21:17]him you could tell he is from the descendants of rasulullah sallallahu
[21:22]alaihi wa'alehi and he would say ask me ask me and what
[21:28]does salah ibn abi ashwat say salah says himself i heard him
[21:33]say ask me ask me before you lose me now what's the
[21:41]difference between what imam asadab said and imam ali alaihi salam said
[21:45]imam ali alaihi salam went further he said whatever knowledge you want
[21:49]of the heavens of the earth of up until the day of
[21:52]resurrection i can do it all imam asadak said ask me ask
[21:56]me before you lose me nobody will narrate as much to you
[22:03]after me like i will and isn't true was there anyone after
[22:08]imam saddai who's narrated as much as imam saddai was there anyone
[22:12]you will not find anyone but what's imam saddai showing here imam
[22:16]ali alaihi salam if he said ask me before you lose me
[22:20]some people could say well imam ali alaihi salam is a student
[22:22]of rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa'alehi so imam ali had the best teacher
[22:27]and rasulullah sallallahu alaihi said i am the city of knowledge ali
[22:31]is its gate so he is clearly given all of that knowledge
[22:34]or i am the house of knowledge and ali is the door
[22:37]or i am the house of wisdom and ali is the door
[22:40]whereas they say with imam asadaq alaihis salam what's imam asadaq saying
[22:45]the same way imam ali alaihis salam is openly saying ask me
[22:50]anything brothers and sisters when i say ask me anything do you
[22:53]know what i mean by ask me anything that literally means ask
[22:57]me about the universe and the way it works ask me about
[23:02]any planet ask me about a question in science physics biology chemistry
[23:09]ask me about every animal even the languages that the animals communicate
[23:14]with ask me about all languages ask me about the religious sciences
[23:19]the quran the tafsir the ta'wil the nasat the mansuq ask me
[23:24]all of these i'll answer every single one of your question why
[23:29]do you think i'm a shia for what reason because when i
[23:32]see my imam saying ask me before you lose me at that
[23:35]moment i know nobody else can say lines like that other human
[23:39]beings you'll ask them questions i'll get back to you i'll email
[23:42]you give me a few days my imam stands up in front
[23:46]of everyone and says ask me ask me before you lose me
[23:54]someone asked the question his access to knowledge we mentioned that you
[24:00]have ilham inspiration like the ilm that was given to khidr alaihis
[24:08]salam what else was the access to knowledge in terms of imam
[24:12]asadaq's life as an imam asadaq alaihi salam did he have certain
[24:17]books he could always refer to if you were to ask many
[24:21]people about imam asadaq's knowledge a major question arises the ahlul bayt
[24:26]alaihi wasalam did the ahlul bayt alaihi wasalam have books which they
[24:31]inherited from one another as in for example if imam asad alaihi
[24:35]wasalam lived let's say a hundred years after the prophet peace be
[24:40]upon him and his family passed away did they have certain books
[24:45]which they inherited from one another which they could refer to yes
[24:49]when they used to give answers there were certain books which they
[24:53]had inherited imam asadaq from imam al baqar imam al baqar from
[24:58]imam zain al abidin imam zain al hussain from imam al hassan
[25:02]from imam amir al mumineen from rasoolallah sallallahu alaihi wa aalehi these
[25:08]books would be when the imams would write what rasulallah sallallaho alaihi
[25:13]wa'alehi has either given them or what allah has sent through jibrael
[25:17]to them someone says what do you mean you have for example
[25:21]the sahaifa of imam ali alaihis salam or the jamia this has
[25:28]all of the questions and the answers to every area of haram
[25:32]and halal what's accepted what's forbidden what's prohibited that they used to
[25:38]say was 70 cubits long and it was in the possession of
[25:42]the ahlul bayt that the ahlul bayt would always have the jamia
[25:47]with them the sahaifa of imam alaihi salam if there was somebody
[25:51]in medina who had a particular question and he gave a judgment
[25:56]if they came to imam assad or imam al baqir alaihi salam
[25:59]they would go for example to the sahaifa of imam ali alaihis
[26:03]salam they look for the answer to the jamia the answer would
[26:07]be there on those questions they had for example as well not
[26:12]just the sahaifa and the jamia they had the must have of
[26:16]fatima as well the must have of fatima which also had certain
[26:21]legal questions and answers that was there at their disposal when they
[26:27]had that there the must have of fatima some people think that
[26:30]the must have of fatima is another quran they say you shia
[26:33]have another quran the mus'haf of fatima for us the mus'haf of
[26:36]fatima is not another quran mus'haf of fatima for us is that
[26:41]which is even longer than the holy quran but without a single
[26:45]ayah of the holy quran inside it not one ayah of the
[26:49]quran inside it but what is in there in the must have
[26:52]a fatama we have within the must have a fatama knowledge of
[26:56]for example events that will happen in the future knowledge about prophets
[27:00]knowledge about certain legal injunctions that would be passed on from one
[27:04]imam to another so you'd have the sahifa you'd have the jamia
[27:10]you'd have the musthav of fatima then you'd have the white jaffar
[27:14]you know sometimes you hear about the jaffar you have the white
[27:18]and the red jaffar the red jaffar will come to when we
[27:21]talk about esoteric knowledge of the imam but if we stick with
[27:25]the white jaffar for example the white jafar was for example that
[27:31]which you could say is a collection of the psalms and the
[27:37]old testament or the torah and the bible that would be collected
[27:42]and would be in the possession of the imam you want to
[27:46]ask me a question about the original torah i have the original
[27:49]torah the original bible i have the original bible the original zaboor
[27:54]i have the original zaboor that would remain with the imam so
[27:58]imam asadaq alaihis salam if you ask them a question if allah
[28:02]subhanahu wa ta'ala wants to he can inspire him like he inspired
[28:05]moses's mother for example allah could give him that ilm which is
[28:10]la dunni like he gave khadr alaihis salam when he taught musa
[28:14]or he goes to the sahaifa of imam ali to the jamia
[28:18]to the mus'hab of fatima to the white jaffar and he'll show
[28:22]they won't show everybody but they'll show some that the answer was
[28:27]here you could see it written why was this important the shia
[28:32]focused on the importance of writing from the time of rasoolallah sallallahu
[28:37]alaihi wa'alehi and even after he died other schools in islam banned
[28:41]writing and publishing books why do you think other schools in islam
[28:45]if you ask them for their earliest books they come maybe a
[28:49]hundred years after rasoolallah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi died if you want to
[28:53]go to books like bukhari and muslim even you have to go
[28:56]over a hundred and fifty years after rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa'alehi died
[29:00]whereas for us we have two developments in our understanding of ilm
[29:05]of the imam one those which were authored by the imams let's
[29:11]say like sahaifa sajadeer others were that which was written compiled by
[29:18]the imams passed on from one imam to another third what was
[29:23]it those who sat under imam assadq alaihis salam writing what imam
[29:30]assadq would say because you know we have al usul al arabamiyah
[29:35]the 400 usul i'd like all of you tonight if you can
[29:40]to try and read articles on al usul al arabamiyah the 400
[29:45]usul because sometimes people say hold on imam asadaq alaihis salam gave
[29:50]us over 30,000 hadith then a couple of hundred years after imam
[29:56]asadaq alaihis salam died we have these books like al kafi and
[30:01]we have the books like malay ihadar al fakih and others so
[30:05]how do we know that these books which have all these hadiths
[30:08]of imam al saddiq have the actual hadith imam al saddiq alaihis
[30:13]salam when he would teach under him would be 400 and more
[30:17]disciples there are numbers that imam saddiq students were 3,952 students we
[30:26]said in kufa the person would say what hadithani jafar ibn muhammad
[30:32]ibn saddiq 900 of them then we have these 400 osul asul
[30:38]and a kitab a kitab what is it a kitab is the
[30:42]narrations let's say let's say for example of an imam but modified
[30:46]with maybe some commentary aafal directly the companion of the imam directly
[30:54]that companion is making sure what directly that companion is making sure
[31:01]that they're writing word for word what the imam himself is saying
[31:08]so you had these who were sitting under the imam for example
[31:11]like who for example like abu basir for example like muawiyah the
[31:18]son of ammar and others who would be sitting under imam sadiq
[31:22]alaihis salam whatever imam sadiq would say these people would be writing
[31:28]imam assadak said on this issue they'd write imam assadak says on
[31:31]that issue they'd write they make sure that they wrote everything that
[31:35]the imam himself was saying that's why later on you had some
[31:40]people who tried to say you had no hadith on imam al
[31:44]mahdi they say you had no hadith on imam al mahdi until
[31:48]al kafi and all these books after the kaiba al kafi and
[31:51]all of these books where have they all come from originally they've
[31:55]come from the a large number of the hadith have come from
[32:00]the 400 of the companions who used to write under imam asadaq
[32:05]or the other imams alaihi salaam when they used to write they
[32:09]would write what does the imam say the 400 osool there is
[32:15]an article by the way if you want to read it online
[32:17]by eton kolberg eitan kolberg is written on the 400 usool and
[32:22]you'll see within there the discussion of how imam asada's companions couldn't
[32:27]wait to sit there and they'll be ready to write of course
[32:30]today we may only have just 16 some might even say less
[32:35]of the but up to the time of the four canonical works
[32:40]which all the shia take their hadith from we used to preserve
[32:44]those 400 because those were like the best books you could have
[32:48]direct from imam asada alaihi salaam so you had that imam asada
[32:54]alaihi salaam the usul al arab amiya they were companions of imam
[32:57]asada did imam asada say only shia are allowed to learn from
[33:01]me who said knowledge is only for your followers if there is
[33:05]a person who doesn't necessarily follow imam asadaq as an imam but
[33:11]says that he is a faqeeh he is one of the ulama
[33:17]he is a man of taqwa then that person may not necessarily
[33:21]be an imami but he may be a good person a trustworthy
[33:24]person even in some classifications of hadith you see sometimes sahih muatha
[33:31]hassan waif in one of those classifications it's clear that it may
[33:36]be someone who is a non imami narrator who may be trustworthy
[33:40]a person could come and sit under imam asad and i wish
[33:43]the muslim world could somehow return to that atmosphere where a person
[33:49]can come to the class of imam asada alaihis salam in medina
[33:54]and that person when they come to the class doesn't necessarily follow
[33:58]imam asada alaihis salam but he says you know what i'm here
[34:01]to learn and i want to ask questions and i have come
[34:06]far from egypt people used to come from far away lands just
[34:11]to come and attend the lesson of imam asaddai alaihis salam you
[34:15]imagine if there is someone who is a notable for example imam
[34:19]or a marja or a lecturer you'll find people will travel hours
[34:23]to come and listen to them now you imagine imam asada alaihis
[34:28]salam whether it's from kufa people would come to medina if he
[34:33]was on hajj people would flock to hajj to go and ask
[34:36]him questions people would come from egypt even atheists would come to
[34:42]him today if you said that you have an atheist friend and
[34:46]you want to bring them to the mosque you'll hear some muslims
[34:49]will say no why are bringing atheists they reject god atheists at
[34:52]the end of the day is trying to find an understanding of
[34:55]this world and i am trying to find an understanding of this
[34:58]world the atheist maybe has certain problems with religion and they want
[35:03]to ask about the religion but they feel that the religion is
[35:06]not answering them imam saddiq alaihis salam could have easily turned around
[35:11]and said i don't want no atheist to come near me but
[35:15]on the contrary hashem ibn al hakim himself says from egypt i
[35:20]remember a person who was an atheist he came to look for
[35:22]imam saddai at madinah look how far people would travel just to
[35:27]come and gain that ilm from imam as salaam today someone says
[35:30]sayyidina but egypt to medina what is that a few hours in
[35:33]those days how long was egypt to medina look at the thirst
[35:37]for ilm that sadly the muslim ummah at times has forgotten where
[35:42]people aren't even bothered to read about the lives of the ahlul
[35:45]bayt alaihi wasallam you found that this person hisham al agham would
[35:49]say from egypt the person would come to medina he was told
[35:52]imam al saddam is in mecca he said okay no problem i'll
[35:54]continue they used to travel far and wide just to sit under
[35:58]imam saddak and some would come with really basic questions and imam
[36:01]saddak would say welcome you're more than welcome to ask me let
[36:04]me give you an example a person comes to imam saddak alaihis
[36:07]salam he looks at him he says you say god exists show
[36:11]me god show me god because there are some who say that
[36:16]well i'll only believe in god if you show me in the
[36:19]senses i have five senses if my five senses see god that's
[36:23]the only way that i will believe forget induction forget intuition forget
[36:28]all of this rational arguments i have to see god imam saad
[36:32]said okay look at the sun person looked at the sun and
[36:38]then he turned his eyes away so what's wrong he said the
[36:42]rays of light were were hurting me he said if you can't
[36:46]bear to see the created how do you expect to see the
[36:49]creator simple on this front what are we saying we say the
[36:53]sun is what is the effect and there is a cause did
[36:57]imam saddai alaihis salam mock that person for being an atheist did
[37:01]he tell people go and kill him because believe you me at
[37:04]the time of imam assad alaihis salam ibn abil aujar and others
[37:08]there were circles of atheists who were mocking even saying that the
[37:11]holy prophet peace be upon his family was just a philosopher nothing
[37:14]more and when mufaddhul bin omar would hear them say that he
[37:20]came towards imam hassan he said ibn abi al aujar they are
[37:25]saying that the prophet peace be upon his family is just a
[37:27]fellasoob just a philosopher nothing more he's not a prophet who received
[37:32]wahi but he conned his people into believing that he was receiving
[37:36]wahi mufaddal had lost his temper with them imam saddiq alaihis son
[37:42]said mufaddal don't worry four sessions imam asadaq he spoke to mufaddal
[37:48]online today you can read the work on those four sessions tawahid
[37:52]al mufaddal yes where he keeps on telling him think mufaddal think
[37:58]keep thinking keep thinking what are they talking about they're denying god
[38:03]exists i'll tell you about the universe as if imam assad was
[38:07]there when the universe was created and those of us who believe
[38:10]in the esoteric dimension believe he was there before the universe anyway
[38:14]so you have that aspect about the creation the animal kingdom about
[38:18]the human kingdom about the day of judgment he came in four
[38:22]sessions with mufadhul bin umar and i know people could come and
[38:26]tell me that mufadhul bin umar there's question marks about him and
[38:29]is he a ghali is he not a ghali go and read
[38:32]toraheen mufadbal and you'll see a discussion about god's existence how many
[38:36]of us need books today about god's existence i guarantee you and
[38:40]the followers of imam saddai alaihis salam today there are some who
[38:43]doubt whether allah exists or not but they're scared to tell people
[38:46]don't be scared if you don't believe god exists then open up
[38:51]and discuss it and the imams of the mosques have to be
[38:54]the first to open up to the possibility that some people are
[38:57]skeptical like abu shaikhirat day sani for example in the time of
[39:02]imam asadaq another one who was what atheist didn't believe in god's
[39:06]existence comes to imam asadaq prove to me that there is a
[39:09]creator it puts me in two positions either there is a creator
[39:15]or i created myself then that puts me in another position if
[39:19]i created myself either i already existed and created myself or i
[39:24]came out of non existence if i came out of non existence
[39:27]something cannot come out of nothing and if i already existed then
[39:31]how do i create myself if i already existed therefore i am
[39:34]a possible existence and there must have been a necessary existence did
[39:39]imam assal sat around and say this abu shaqirah desani behead him
[39:42]ibn abi al aujab for example going look you people have your
[39:46]questions feel free to ask 3,952 students my dear brothers and sisters
[39:54]that's not something to be taken lightly 31,451 hadith a pillar of
[40:04]the original teachings of rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa'alehi i mean this the
[40:09]original teachings of rasool allah sallallahu alaihi wa'alehi why because in his
[40:12]time everyone's giving an opinion every school is giving a legal opinion
[40:17]every school is giving other opinions mu'tazila saying this khawaraj are saying
[40:22]this extremists are saying this everybody is giving an opinion this school
[40:26]is saying that that school is wallah there was nearly a 150
[40:30]schools of law at that time a 150 and inshaallah we're coming
[40:34]to the discussion of abu hanifa and malik bin anas the students
[40:38]of imam asada in the forthcoming nights but sheikh asad haydar says
[40:41]there was a 150 imagine my dear brothers after rasulullah died within
[40:47]a hundred years you have a 150 different schools of law on
[40:52]one issue of islam what is it nuclear physics or is it
[40:58]a religion for the love of god yaani what are why is
[41:00]it become so complicated at the end of the day you have
[41:03]these imams who are telling me telling you ask me and who
[41:10]do they go to you allah well i'm not surprised and nothing
[41:14]surprises me that there are certain people who are made ulama and
[41:18]others who are forgotten until time made aliyah and mooawi are the
[41:22]same people would go to others while they have imam as salah
[41:25]but no problem imam as salah doesn't matter you follow me you
[41:29]follow me you don't follow me you want to ask me a
[41:30]question ask me but what he made clear was the legal opinions
[41:35]of our school what do we mean for example on the area
[41:39]of eating fish see many muslims in the world today they'll be
[41:43]eating very comfortably they'll eat crab they'll eat oyster they'll eat octopus
[41:48]they'll be eating lobster they'll be eating calamari they'll be eating squid
[41:55]they'll eat all of these comfortably is it muslim it's like rabbit
[41:59]for example there are many muslims in the world today who eat
[42:02]rabbit someone says well who cares if there are muslims who are
[42:05]eating lobster and for example oyster and squid or they're eating rabbit
[42:11]we care because we the shia for us it is haram to
[42:14]eat those fish without scales we have to eat fish with scales
[42:51]or that imam asadaq was just laying back wallah imam asadaq was
[42:54]under so much scrutiny but there was a short window a window
[42:57]was open of opportunity there he began to teach that you who
[43:01]eat rabbit rabbit is haram for us the shia now i know
[43:05]some of my egyptian friends might be disappointed with me now that
[43:08]i've said that but rabbit haram for the shia that octopus squid
[43:13]all of this haram someone says but sayyidman the quran and surat
[43:17]al maidah it says yes it says for you that permissible for
[43:25]you is the hunting of the sea okay finish the ayah it
[43:32]is provision for you and the rest of the caravan someone says
[43:36]what do you mean sayyid nath says that you are allowed to
[43:40]have the what the hunting of that which is in the sea
[43:45]yes but this refers to when you're going on a pilgrimage that
[43:49]if you're going on a pilgrimage you're allowed to hunt from the
[43:53]sea but from the bar while you are in haram the land
[43:57]you cannot hunt it's not telling me everything in the sea is
[44:00]allowed it's telling me you want to get some munch then you
[44:03]can hunt from the sea but you cannot hunt from the land
[44:08]some said no but this means that's anything in the sea not
[44:11]at all not at all this the context of these ayat are
[44:16]related to when someone is going on a pilgrimage read the ayah
[44:20]before read the ayah after it's talking about wearing the ihram and
[44:24]we're going on a pilgrimage so when someone comes and tells me
[44:27]that the said of the bahar means everything in the sea no
[44:31]everything in the sea is not meaning that you can eat everything
[44:35]in the sea means you can hunt from the sea but you
[44:38]cannot hunt from the land that's why there's always so many questions
[44:41]about the kafara for hunting while you are in a state of
[44:46]ihram which imam as salaq would answer or imam al jawad would
[44:50]answer later on so you have on the area of fish other
[44:53]muslims were saying that any fish eat eat baba the ayah says
[44:57]you eat whatever you want imam asadaq said no not at all
[45:03]it doesn't work like that this is qualified this is the meaning
[45:06]on the area of woohoo muslims were saying that you wash your
[45:10]feet imam asada says no we wipe our feet the ayah in
[45:14]surah five verse number six the ghosul is mentioned for the face
[45:32]and is mentioned for the arms masih for the head masih for
[45:38]the feet other schools in salah say about the sunnah okay you
[45:42]can go to the sunnah but for us we see that the
[45:45]quran is clear in what it's saying and our imam says to
[45:48]us that we wipe our feet we don't wash our feet then
[45:52]news found imam asad will make clear that while other muslims would
[45:55]do sujood on that which can be worn we cannot do sujood
[45:59]on that which can be worn when the prophet peace be upon
[46:03]him his family and that's why when imam asad would say ghalah
[46:06]rasoolallah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi people would think well you know how could
[46:10]you say it you never met the prophet they are all one
[46:13]noor and that noor answers like each other whatever question you give
[46:19]them non shia would do sujood without for example there being clay
[46:25]for us imam sallallahu alaihi salaam will make clear that the prophet
[46:28]said the earth has been made a place of prostration and purification
[46:35]for me purification in which sense prostration in which sense that we
[46:41]do sujood on the earth and imam asadaq would make clear to
[46:45]us look at what he's doing there are a 150 legal schools
[46:49]let there be a billion there's one jafar asadaq it's as simple
[46:54]as that every other school can say rabbit halal squid halal oyster
[46:59]halal they could give all their legal opinions when imam assal say
[47:03]something i'm not interested in listening to anybody else you have your
[47:07]opinion and you can follow that but for us imam assal that
[47:11]freedom that he had anyone sitting down you said saloni saloni i
[47:18]want to ask you about fish i want to ask you about
[47:21]qunoot and salah is it wajib or mustahab i want to ask
[47:24]you about praying on the earth i want to ask you about
[47:28]wavuah i want to ask you about inheritance there was that rasala
[47:33]which was inherited called rasalaat al farahid which would give you all
[47:37]the clear guidance on inheritance let alone what was in the sahifa
[47:41]which would also give you that clear guidance therefore all of these
[47:45]who made sure that they were narrated who was responsible to ensure
[47:49]that we had all of these because we have a number of
[47:52]of epistles or treaties from the imam yes we have for example
[47:58]the rasal al ahwaziyah which shahid al thani quotes which was a
[48:03]rasalah to the general the najashi of ahwaz we have for example
[48:10]the rasalat al farah we have for example the other rasalat farah
[48:16]even which was provided for us in relation to imam's conversation with
[48:21]an in with a hindu about god's existence we also have the
[48:27]of omar ibn hanbala if for example shia have a question about
[48:32]authority and who to refer their cases to or there is a
[48:36]conflict of evidences so what do we have in terms of exoteric
[48:40]knowledge we have imam sallah alaihis salaam providing us exoteric knowledge in
[48:44]the area of fiqh and the area of theology in the area
[48:48]as well of for example tawheed when it came to tawhid al
[48:54]mufaddwal in the area for example here of the makbullah of umar
[48:57]bin hanbala all of these remain with us until today we find
[49:01]these epistles remain with us who would ensure they remain with us
[49:05]of the people who would ensure not only his companions who were
[49:09]coming to in the forthcoming nights but also his sons one of
[49:13]his sons ali the son of jafar masa al ali son of
[49:19]jafar masa al ali ibn jafar is one of our most important
[49:25]works which provides us with the i'm left behind by imam asadaq
[49:30]and imam al qa'am alaihi salaam you found this ali ibn jafar
[49:35]how much i could praise him wallahi i could give a whole
[49:38]lecture just on ali the son of imam asadaq one of our
[49:42]greatest scholars son of imam saddak so he narrates from imam saddak
[49:46]if one takes mama qaani's opinion that he was 16 or over
[49:50]he narrates from imam al kavam he narrates from imam al raba
[49:54]he meets imam al jawad now i ask you if he's the
[49:57]son of imam al saddak and he met imam al jawad wouldn't
[50:00]he be old by the time he meets imam al jawad okay
[50:03]do you agree so let's say by the time he meets imam
[50:06]al jawad he is at an old age do you think that's
[50:09]affected him because sometimes you look at someone younger than you he
[50:12]becomes an imam you're not an imam sometimes jealousy could affect you
[50:16]he said no chance when imam al jawad was eight and a
[50:19]half nine became an imam walked into the mosque ali ibn jafar
[50:23]who had narrated so many ahadith from imam asada from imam al
[50:26]khanum from imam rabbah when he saw him he ran to pick
[50:30]up the shoes of imam al jawad some people said why are
[50:34]you doing that that boy is a nine year old he said
[50:36]allah decided a man with this beard doesn't deserve to be an
[50:40]imam and someone that young is an imam therefore i give everything
[50:44]towards him massa ala ibn jafar ali ibn jafar ensured a lot
[50:49]of the traditions of imam as sala continued from one generation to
[50:53]another until we saw the compilations in our own works but likewise
[50:57]who else imam al qadam alaihi salaam imam al qadam made sure
[51:03]that the hadith of imam asadaq remained because we have nearly 3,000
[51:09]hadith of imam al qadam there is no son of imam al
[51:13]saddiq who has as many hadith left behind for the muslim community
[51:20]like imam al qadam alaihi salaam because we know there are others
[51:23]who may have gone down the path of the nizari ismaili or
[51:26]the buhra who may have gone through ismail the son of imam
[51:29]al saddam read the hadith of imam al qadam alaihi salaam look
[51:34]at the treasures of wisdom that were left behind imam al qadam
[51:38]alaihi salaam so much knowledge he gave us from what imam al
[51:42]sadiq alaihi salaam had narrated because imam al qadam lived with his
[51:47]father twenty years he was able to learn so much digest the
[51:52]same way imam asadaq learned so much from imam al baqar alaihis
[51:56]salam did they look after imam al qa'am the fact that he
[51:59]had that much knowledge from imam asadaq did they honor him sadly
[52:04]forget to honor him they made him go from one prison to
[52:08]another you'd think a community would honor the heritage of an imam
[52:15]you'd think that that community would honor someone who's given alm back
[52:19]to them if today in this country there's someone who's left great
[52:22]amounts of knowledge wouldn't you honor him and honor his family if
[52:25]they couldn't honor rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa'alehi how do we expect them
[52:29]to have honored imam asadaq's family if rasulullah left so much ilmen
[52:35]hikam and they butchered each member of his immediate family then why
[52:41]are we surprised that they would do the same to imam asadaq
[52:43]alaihis salam they said bana abbas are a golden age which golden
[52:48]age which takes musa ibn jafar from one prison to another and
[52:53]away from his family far from his sons and his daughters and
[52:59]for his shia not only did they miss his ilm not only
[53:03]did they miss his hikam but for his shia they yearn to
[53:06]see him how many of us yearn to see the imam of
[53:09]our time ali ibn souwed narrates that we yearn to see the
[53:13]imam of our time because ali ibn souwed says that we were
[53:17]waiting for imam al qadam one day to come out of prison
[53:21]why he is our imam like the other imams who said saluni
[53:25]saluni like him we want to learn from him matigoz they took
