[0:26]The Months of Muharram and Safar are special months of the year

[0:29]for the followers of the Ahlulbayt (a), whereby they express their grief

[0:33]over the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a) and all those with him.

[0:38]At the same time, people often wonder and ask what is allowed

[0:43]and what is not during this period?

[0:46]Ie are people allowed to move houses for example, buy new clothes,

[0:51]get married or get a new business acquisition or get a new

[0:57]job etc.?

[0:58]Before presenting the answer given by Ayatollah Sistani, it’s important to understand

[1:03]at the outset the difference between a categorical ruling, ie something is

[1:09]prohibited or permissible for example, and what is suitable or recommended for

[1:13]a believer to do, in accordance with recommendations by the Ahlulbayt.

[1:18]Whilst the latter may not necessarily be obligatory, it still needs to

[1:24]be taken into consideration when deciding what to do in certain situations.

[1:29]In terms of this area, it is not haram to do what

[1:34]has been mentioned, ie moving house or buying new clothes in Muharram

[1:38]and Safar, except if this is generally considered by people as sanctity

[1:44]violation, known as hatk.

[1:47]For example, having parties, getting married or other celebrations for instance on

[1:53]the Day of Ashura is clearly seen as violation of the day

[1:58]of grief and sorrow for the Ahlulbayt (a), and this therefore is

[2:02]haram.

[2:03]It is also disappointing to see some people holding gatherings of celebration

[2:08]in the two months overall.

[2:11]Regarding other things like buying new house or wearing new clothes, as

[2:16]long as they’re not specifically on the days of the tragedies of

[2:21]the Ahlulbayt, like Ashura and Arbaeen, then it is permissible.

[2:25]But, and this is important to note also: It is mentioned by

[2:29]his eminence is that if we have lost a family member of

[2:34]a close friend, we normally wouldn’t do certain things, and likewise we

[2:39]should be observant of the same on the days of the sorrow

[2:43]of Ahlulbayt.

[2:44]So, in conclusion, and as per ruling of many of our marajie,

[2:49]we need to make a distinction between that which causes violation of

[2:54]the sacredness of these days, like I believe celebrations and marriage, which

[2:59]must not take place in Muharram and safar, and some other things

[3:04]like buying new house or new clothes, which should be avoided on

[3:10]specific days in these two months.

[3:14]At the same time, and it’s important to note here also, people

[3:19]should be respected if they choose not to do any of these

[3:22]things during the two months, as an expression of the aza for

[3:27]the Ahlulbayt (a).

[3:28]Similarly, if people choose to follow the marjie and adhere to the

[3:33]legal instructions, such as if they decide to paint their house on

[3:37]say 21st Muharram, they should not be judged or condemned too.

[3:43]Finally, we must not lose or forget the spirit of these months,

[3:48]and that is expression of love and loyalty to the martyrs of

[3:53]Karbala and their eternal stance, displaying of mourning as well as participation

[3:59]in the Husseini Rituals (al-shair al-hussainia).
