[2:56]suicide bombings virtually everywhere and everyone seemingly points this back to the

[3:02]holy quran because they say that the justification of these bombers or

[3:06]of those who have been involved in killing for example non-muslims in

[3:12]different parts of the world is because of the quran if the

[3:18]muslims were actually ready to scrap the quran or to finally stop

[3:24]in their discussions of certain sections of the holy quran then you

[3:29]wouldn't have these issues that you see in the world today and

[3:34]there is a reality that every time one looks in the news

[3:37]and you hear about a particular suicide bombing you always associate it

[3:42]with a muslim or if you hear for example of a youtube

[3:46]video that's out in relation to a beheading by a member of

[3:51]a muslim terrorist organization now yes muslims may always argue that look

[3:58]when you see for example the ku klux klan you are not

[4:02]going to say all christians subscribe to that particular world view or

[4:07]when you look at for example the irish republican army you're not

[4:12]going to say that every single person who's a catholic subscribes to

[4:16]that world view or if i look at the tamil tigers for

[4:21]example i'm not going to say every single person subscribes to that

[4:24]world view but seemingly if it's al-qaeda or if it's isis or

[4:30]if it's any of the organizations that have used the muslim slogans

[4:36]that means that all muslims subscribe to this now i know that

[4:41]there are certain non-muslims out there who definitely will not generalize they'll

[4:44]always say that look what's being said by these people is not

[4:47]something that we agree with but we can't really shy away from

[4:52]this quranically because while we love to tell the world that islam

[4:58]means peace a famous comedian once remarked that yes a peace here

[5:02]a peace there and a peace everywhere meaning that when you're talking

[5:07]about peace in relation to the religion of islam and you look

[5:10]within the holy quran you see within the holy quran there are

[5:13]certain verses that you hope your muslim friends don't get a hold

[5:20]of because when a verse in the holy quran says something like

[5:22]what the verses we're going to discuss tonight say such as kill

[5:28]them wherever you see them how then does that match my discussion

[5:37]or my understanding of the religion especially the way that i disseminate

[5:41]the teachings of this religion that's not to deny that other religions

[5:47]don't have similar verses i'm not going to shy away from discussing

[5:52]the war verses or the violent verses or the killing verses in

[5:58]the quran i'm not going to shy away from those but you

[6:01]cannot tell me that a person needs a religious text for them

[6:07]to justify an action there are people who had no belief in

[6:13]god who killed millions in russia there are people who had no

[6:17]belief in god who killed millions in china they didn't have a

[6:21]religious text called the quran or the bible or the torah or

[6:28]the gita but they still ended up killing millions a person can

[6:34]abuse any text they feel like for the love of god someone

[6:41]might even make their own text and make people follow it this

[6:44]is my struggle and i want you to understand it this is

[6:47]my world view and i want you to all believe it for

[6:52]a person to suggest that the quran is the only text that

[6:59]has verses which talk about war violence killing one only has to

[7:10]look in the torah in the bible and in the gita because

[7:14]no one's gonna ever associate judaism or christianity or hinduism with violence

[7:19]violence is only associated with islam if you look for example in

[7:25]the book of deuteronomy or you look in the book of numbers

[7:30]or you look at krsna's discussion with arjun about the dharmic duty

[7:37]of fighting nobody would ever associate the likes of christ or the

[7:40]likes of krishna with a sword and going around and killing people

[7:44]or ordering that people should be slayed i'll never forget in the

[7:49]book of luke if i was to say the following two lines

[7:54]i guarantee you that most people would think that these two lines

[8:01]are from the quran all those who do not want me to

[8:06]rule them bring them to me and slay them in my name

[8:13]all those who don't want me to rule over them bring them

[8:20]to me and slay them in my name who says that muhammad

[8:24]because the whole medieval europe used to teach us that muhammad is

[8:29]the one who spread his religion by the sword muhammad is the

[8:32]one whose soldiers were going around killing people those who don't want

[8:37]me to rule over them bring them to me and slay them

[8:40]in my name is jesus talking jesus is meant to be the

[8:51]man of forgiveness man of peace man of love yet luke 19

[8:55]27 is saying to me they don't want me to rule over

[9:00]their name say jesus has a second coming you don't want me

[9:03]to rule over you bring them to me we slay them am

[9:07]i gonna generalize on all christians out there because i've taken a

[9:12]passage from deuteronomy do i generalize on all the jewish community because

[9:16]of a passage from the book of numbers do i generalize on

[9:20]all the hindu community because of krsna's discussion about dharmic duty do

[9:25]i generalize on all muslims because of the behavior of a few

[9:32]but the non-muslim and even the ex-muslim has a point when they

[9:36]say well at least address the verses because i do believe that

[9:43]the majority of muslims out there either read the arabic without understanding

[9:46]what they're reading read the arabic without bothering to ask what's the

[9:50]context of this ayah if i see a particular eye of the

[9:56]holy quran i have to ask what's the context of this now

[9:59]i know some non-muslims say that's a cop-out because all you're going

[10:04]to do is you're just going to try and show that was

[10:05]in a particular context look i live in the 21st century and

[10:11]i've seen certain countries where one man's freedom fighter is another man's

[10:17]terrorist another man's terrorist as someone else's freedom fighter at the end

[10:22]of the day when i'm gonna look at for example the invasion

[10:26]of a certain country in a thousand years time i still need

[10:30]to read the context why this invasion took place was there a

[10:33]treaty was the treaty ratified was there a particular group of people

[10:38]who ratified it was there the possibility of peace was there the

[10:43]possibility of forgiveness what if people didn't break that treaty was there

[10:47]collateral damage collateral killings was it killing all civilians isn't that true

[10:52]isn't that part of our discussions that when we see people dying

[10:56]in iraq the first question i'm going to ask was that a

[10:59]military base or did you go all in most of the discussions

[11:02]about war in the world will ask the companies that were employed

[11:06]to supply weapons did you target the military base and did you

[11:13]offer the chance of treaty of peace therefore when i look at

[11:17]verses in the quran it's unfair for someone to say to me

[11:19]that the verse is in surat al-baqarah or sora you are just

[11:26]going to justify them by using context no i won't i'm just

[11:31]doing what rational convention does rational convention dictates that when you look

[11:35]at any situation that exists between two warring communities try and find

[11:40]ways of reconciling try and see whether certain treaties or covenants have

[11:46]been broken who's broken them have they plundered other people's lives have

[11:50]they killed innocent civilians let's they take them to a high court

[11:53]that high court may result in certain people from nazi germany being

[12:01]executed for war crimes you can't bat an eyelid about those who

[12:05]were executed because of what they did at auschwitz a person says

[12:09]kill them all execute them all but when you say that then

[12:15]why is there a problem if the quran talked about the same

[12:19]type of perpetrators in their context was there a hitler in mecca

[12:24]yes there was was there a hitler in medina yes there was

[12:29]were there people who were literally executing innocent men and women for

[12:34]example if you're saying that what happened with auschwitz dictates that a

[12:41]certain body can decide what happens to the perpetrators of these crimes

[12:45]what if that body according to us is revelation from the lord

[12:49]therefore when i'm looking within the quran and just a disclaimer by

[12:55]the way i just want to put a disclaimer here i find

[12:57]it very interesting how many people hate violence but don't mind buying

[13:02]computer games for their kids which are violent so if there's a

[13:06]quranic verse or a biblical verse that discusses a particular violent verse

[13:10]of a violent concept it's like disgusting these books should be burnt

[13:16]what's the name of the latest game where you go around killing

[13:23]everyone call of duty masha allah what's her name call of duty

[13:25]masha allah the duty is to go around killing people that's the

[13:30]call of duty many kids in households muslim and non-muslims are bought

[13:35]these gifts so why when i discuss a religious text they say

[13:39]by all the religious sex people will will be indoctrinated by have

[13:43]you seen when a child plays a computer game how long they

[13:46]stay on the screen therefore don't have a double standards let's agree

[13:50]that there are texts which are contextual let's agree that not everyone

[13:56]called muslim is necessarily educated literate or someone whose intentions are pure

[14:01]let's agree that we can look at these verses and seek to

[14:05]understand them one by one and what's very clear is that the

[14:08]prophet muhammad peace be upon his family becomes or announces his prophet

[14:13]at the age of 40 and he dies at the age of

[14:18]63.

[14:19]so 23 years he's a prophet publicly in his announcement the first

[14:26]war he ever engages in is 15 years into the 23 because

[14:32]when you look at the quran i think even though the meccans

[14:42]even though these people are oppressing his people there's a group of

[14:47]verses in the quran that begin by telling him turn the other

[14:50]cheek you know that concept reply with that which is better if

[14:53]they are attacking you try and turn the other cheek if you

[14:57]look at these groups of verses let's let's try and begin with

[15:03]uh sora 41 probably 41 from about 32 onwards yeah it's order

[15:08]41 34 let's go to 4134 um surah 41 verse 34 is

[15:14]a very interesting surah okay we call it okay surah 41 um

[15:22]verse 34 and the quran says bismillah you can't put good and

[15:39]evil is equal do you agree you can't put good and evil

[15:48]as being equal repel the evil with that which is best what

[16:02]happens between you and the one who has enmity with you it

[16:08]will be like they become a warm friend maybe inshallah inshallah you

[16:14]never know the try and reply to them in that which is

[16:17]best maybe they come to you as a warm friend at the

[16:19]end maybe they change their conception maybe they changed their philosophy another

[16:24]ayah surat al maidah is interesting surah 5 13.

[16:27]in sora tillman verse number 13 there's this very interesting discussion that

[16:35]takes place again about this area of mecca mecca the prophet is

[16:41]is is trying to to do that which is better they're bringing

[16:47]um although there's a later verse but you you still see that

[16:51]sometimes it's the covenants that are being broken and that's what's causing

[16:55]a lot of their of their problem and the quran says to

[17:02]him at the end of the ayah and swallow the fat for

[17:06]and so try and forgive them and try and pass over what

[17:15]they're saying to you um also another early ayah in mecca surah

[17:21]73 verse number 10 again there is this aim at the beginning

[17:25]of his resale at the beginning of his message there is this

[17:28]aim to try and find some sort of peaceful reconciliation which by

[17:31]the way i don't think changes very much um throughout his message

[17:36]but you look in verse number 10 be patient with the words

[17:45]that they're attacking you with and try and avoid them with a

[17:50]particular avoidance that is um a beautiful avoidance so try and look

[17:54]for peace and even a few swords later in surah 88 surah

[17:58]88 of the quran verse number 22 again we see allah telling

[18:05]the prophet and you all know these verses obviously when the quran

[18:14]says you are someone who reminds them but you cannot compel them

[18:20]so at the beginning when abu lahab and abu jahl and abu

[18:22]sufyan and so on when they're attacking the muslims they killed for

[18:28]example yasser the father of ammar sumaya the mother of ammar they

[18:32]were torturing bilal there were many of the sahaba who had to

[18:36]leave mecca and go and live in africa because of how much

[18:39]torture they were facing the quran was telling the prophet peace be

[18:41]upon him as family try and find forgiveness try and be patient

[18:44]you know and even some people because some people say oh that

[18:49]was only because he never had many supporters that's the only reason

[18:52]he never raised his sword in the first battle of the ridge

[18:56]of islam the battle of bed did he have many supporters no

[19:00]why then did allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the beginning in mecca

[19:04]not tell him get your sword because the aim of this whole

[19:08]message wasn't that we go with a sword and put it on

[19:11]people's neck the aim was that we somehow try and show the

[19:14]message and if they treat us badly we try and reply with

[19:17]that which is better yes people look later on at the likes

[19:22]of before that on christ gandhi and others who called for a

[19:26]form of standing up against those who are attacking you by turning

[19:30]the other cheek fasfa in a way okay is to turn the

[19:34]other cheek in reality because you're trying to say that you know

[19:39]what we don't want to just enter a fight because you know

[19:41]sometimes someone might say to you this guy's behaving badly with you

[19:43]go and fight them tell them let's meet somewhere sometimes you're like

[19:46]no you know what let me turn the other cheek maybe their

[19:49]heart softens you know like how habil may be tried with okay

[19:57]so rasulallah the prophet muhammad migrates from mecca to medina and when

[20:02]you migrate from mexico listen you guys are trying to attack me

[20:56]coming on your borders any country will be like excuse me you

[21:01]know that ship of yours 170 feet long what's it doing in

[21:04]our shores oh sorry we're just fishing no no you there's there's

[21:09]lines which you have to draw you can't come into my area

[21:11]and so what they were trying to do they were trying to

[21:14]find ways of getting into medina and so the prophet what would

[21:18]he do peace be upon his family he'd tell the people that

[21:21]listen try your hardest to stop their caravans because their caravans are

[21:25]full of weapons trade to try and make them stronger against us

[21:28]when he raided one of their caravans abu sufyan sent a message

[21:33]to mecca what was the message uh arabs i've got news for

[21:37]you your caravans have been raided you tell an arab his stock

[21:40]has been raided forget about it that's my rasmal that's all my

[21:46]high and you've taken it from me abu jahl said that's it

[21:48]we fight them now question how long are you going to take

[21:52]this for because there's a group of gangs and unless you stand

[21:55]up to them they're going to keep bullying you and so eventually

[22:03]the quran revealed to him now you're allowed to defend yourself now

[22:08]you're allowed to ask your companions to defend themselves and what you

[22:14]see is the beginning of a mobilization in medina never in mecca

[22:18]but in medina you see the beginning of a mobilization where the

[22:23]main ayah which begins the rationale for a country a state a

[22:29]city a group to defend themselves now is the beginning of it

[22:38]surah 22 verse number 39 this is the verse which gives you

[22:51]the rationale of why muslims were the permission has been given for

[23:13]the believers to now finally fight because they've been oppressed islam is

[23:18]not a religion that says you just go around to anyone and

[23:21]you're like well you know what because of your identity i want

[23:23]to oppress you we had an issue with isis simply because it

[23:27]was on the hawaii on the identity that they were killing people

[23:29]whereas here the quran says no quran says permission has been given

[23:36]to the believers to fight because they've been oppressed will look after

[23:48]their victory allah you know why they were kicked out their houses

[24:00]from mecca because they said our lord is allah that's it that's

[24:03]it did they rape a girl there no did they molest the

[24:09]girl there no did they steal from anyone no what was their

[24:15]crime that's it only one crime and then the quran says something

[24:23]very interesting this is a wonderful eye because it says we've given

[24:36]permission to the muslims to defend themselves rational convention anyone who people

[24:41]are attacking their home has a right to defend himself the only

[24:46]crime they did why they were kicked out of mecca this group

[24:50]of muhajiroun the only reason was because they said that's it and

[24:53]if it wasn't for us telling them to stand up there wouldn't

[25:15]a monastery okay let's say churches salawat synagogue masjid mosque if this

[25:29]religion is for muslims why are you defending synagogues why defending churches

[26:22]may have a difference on the meaning of that doesn't stop a

[26:53]this what if a muslim is fighting a christian or jew if

[26:57]a muslim is fighting someone christian or fighting someone jewish what then

[27:16]normal for you to taste blood even islam says it's macro to

[27:35]find 100 butchers in one road find supermarkets everywhere find barbers everywhere

[27:42]but you won't find butchers everywhere not something highly recommended islam didn't

[27:48]want you to be used to blood yes what muslims became is

[27:54]a different story altogether islam didn't wonder if you look in the

[27:56]quran surah 6 verse 1 5 1 of the quran surah 6

[28:02]s if you look at verse 151 god makes it clear he

[28:07]doesn't want us to be that nation when he tells us these

[28:13]ten commandments you know how people have ten commandments there are ten

[28:17]commandments here say o prophet of god come i will recite unto

[28:20]you what your lord has forbidden to you you don't associate with

[28:24]him anything and to your parents you're good and you don't kill

[28:27]your children out of fear of poverty we provide for you and

[28:29]them and you do not go near shameful deeds and that you

[28:35]do not kill another soul which god has forbidden but it does

[28:45]say accept to achieve justice do you agree well islam says you

[28:57]don't kill another soul except for justice now here's a problem by

[29:01]the way here's a problem what's the problem whose killing is just

[29:07]big problem i cannot deny bin laden says who i killed is

[29:15]just abu bakr al-baghdadi says who i killed was just say it

[29:22]is just i cannot deny when a non-muslim says anyone can take

[30:01]surah till baqarah verse 190 there's there's two chapters of the quran

[30:07]that have violent verses there's a number of verses but there's two

[30:12]chapters that have violent violent verses is probably the most famous of

[30:22]them get ready go out there and fight islam is the religion

[30:32]of peace here's the quran and then someone's like bro you know

[30:35]what those who fight you pretty clear do you agree those who

[30:52]come and fight you you gotta fight them the meccans for years

[30:59]were in their ascendancy they had bullied the muslims they had tortured

[31:58]him come back to mecca when did they give a hint that

[32:05]hodei a peace treaty britain has signed treaties america signed treaties canada

[32:11]signed treaties pakistan assigned treaties india has signed treaties everybody signed treaties

[32:20]violent treaty of hodeidah was what was that you're going to be

[34:44]yazid is a creation so allah have you not read the ayahs

[34:48]of inallah will mention to us but there are those i do

[34:57]not love amongst them are those who transgress you can have a

[35:03]muslim ruler transgress against muhammad's own grandchildren do you agree a muslim

[35:11]supposed ruler who some say yes transgresses not look if i've got

[44:39]be responsible you'd think that they'd be responsible in the sense of

[44:44]war that they'll all get killed no even then allah still displays

[44:46]mercy even though there's no rahm at the beginning of the surah

[44:51]but we're gonna go back to mecca and from now on you

[44:54]know what's gonna happen hajj is gonna start allah reveals this chapter

[45:00]to the prophet prophet tells abu bakr go towards the people of

[45:05]mecca and over there in the middle of that whole hajj period

[45:08]announced that abu bakr leaves on his he's just left he's going

[45:14]from madina to mecca it comes to the prophet peace be one

[45:17]time he says the lord has instructed the either you go or

[45:21]someone who's your nephs the prophet turns around oh ali you go

[45:38]will announce the revelation what are you doing here he said ibrahim

[45:44]came and he said that only a prophet like the prophet or

[56:45]if these people break them then there are certain laws which have

[56:48]to be administered because in the quran allah mentions here and verse

[56:54]56 of surah 8.

[57:07]us live in peace they break that agreement what happens with them

[57:10]verse 15 57 either you take them fighting scatter them by punishing

[57:34]them making an example of them however if you fear treachery from

[57:40]a people then do what throw them back onto their covenant on

[57:44]evil term on equal terms okay make a deal with them again

[57:49]and then in verse number 60 it's very important [Music] that you

[58:14]prepare for war frighten the enemy of the opposition and then the

[58:21]quran says that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will give you victory but

[58:25]in verse 61 this is huge my dear brothers and sisters verse

[58:30]61 but if they lean to peace allah even if they are

[58:39]your most vicious enemies and i don't know if in the muslim

[58:44]world this still applies i don't know that if a group of

[58:48]people are your most vicious enemies the moment you think of peace

[58:53]everyone's like for allah we'll never make peace with them we'll kill

[58:55]them we'll burn them we'll hide i don't know the quran seemingly

[59:00]has a different worldview the quran tells you that if they lean

[59:04]to peace what should you do so when it says sell me

[59:28]are your enemies are trying to make peace with you even if

[60:08]look at these ayahs 32 and 33 of surah 5 they're like

[60:13]saying that three of the quran verse 32 is every muslims cop-out

[60:27]verse they love the this verse in particular for this reason muslims

[60:38]always quote this ayah they say that we prescribe to the children

[60:42]of israel whoever kills one man then it's as if they've killed

[60:47]the whole of humanity but the reality is the eye doesn't say

[60:50]whoever kills one man they've killed the whole of humanity the ayah

[60:53]says whoever kills one man unless it's because that person has done

[60:57]murder or mischief so muslims when they say baba you know in

[61:01]our belief if you kill one person you kill the whole of

[61:03]you know the eyes there's you kill one person it's as if

[61:06]you kill the holy man unless that person has committed murder than

[61:08]this retaliation let's not take it out of context but the next

[61:19]ayah the next ayah is vicious those who wage war against god

[61:36]and his messenger um they strive to make mischief in the land

[61:38]okay this is how we deal with them we kill them or

[61:42]we crucify them or we cough their hands and feet from opposite

[61:46]sides or we banish them from the earth islam religion of peace

[61:51]those who wage war against the prophet of god problem with this

[61:56]type of ayah is isis uses it al-qaeda uses it this one

[62:00]uses it that one because they're like listen uh you wage war
