[41:12]phd at the university of central florida with a background in engineering
[41:19]mathematics and computer science and so please help me in welcoming sayyid
[41:25]shabir kirmani muhammad of the reappearance of imam muhammad my respected scholars
[43:34]elders brothers and sisters in imam alaikum question what's the proof of
[43:43]the existence of god keep that question in the back of your
[43:46]mind inshaallah we'll return to it we have been discussing the future
[43:50]of our community and we said that in order for a community
[43:54]to thrive in order for a community to succeed we must have
[43:59]a plan in order for any endeavor in life to succeed one
[44:03]must have a plan whether that's a business an institution or even
[44:07]our life our academics our personal pursuits we must have a plan
[44:11]and if we want to succeed we must make sure that we
[44:14]refine that plan therefore we said that if we want to go
[44:18]down the path and look at where is our community going in
[44:21]twenty thirty forty fifty no one hundred years from now we must
[44:27]start to plan and strategize today and we got to the point
[44:32]where we discussed how valuable and how powerful is your belief system
[44:38]your iman what you believe can actually move mountains and we gave
[44:43]the daleel and the proof and the evidence of that last night
[44:47]tonight i want to take the discussion to the next level and
[44:50]i want to talk about when we plan for our future one
[44:55]discussion that comes part and parcel of that is the discussion concerning
[45:00]one's identity and when we come to the identity question what should
[45:06]you and i as followers of the ahlul living wherever we are
[45:11]what should we be known for what should we be known for
[45:16]some of us had the opportunity to visit some of the top
[45:19]scholars in the hausa almiyyah of najaf and ask them this question
[45:24]some of our top scholars what is it that we should be
[45:28]known for especially followers of the ahlul bayt in the west when
[45:32]we ask this question at some point in time different scholars had
[45:37]different answers but if there was one underlying theme if there was
[45:42]one thing that was common amongst the answers it was the concept
[45:47]of knowledge followers of the ahlul bayt in line of their imams
[45:54]in line of their representatives the aymmah the 14 ma'asumeen must be
[45:59]known for knowledge included in knowledge is as well manners ethics everything
[46:08]gets encapsulated within knowledge therefore you and i must strive to revive
[46:14]this because if you look at the history of islam we had
[46:17]a rich history but sometimes today we are in the wake you
[46:23]and i we together are responsible for reviving the rich history why
[46:30]did imam al hussain who we are here to commemorate his arba'in
[46:35]why did he give his life why did he sacrifice 18 of
[46:41]the moons of banu hashim on earth why did he sacrifice 72
[46:45]of his companions his relatives so that you and i can keep
[46:49]our identity strong part and parcel of that identity is knowledge therefore
[46:56]tonight i want to look at what is the role and responsibility
[47:00]of us as followers of ahlul bayt what is the primacy and
[47:04]importance of knowledge within our madhab why is knowledge important is it
[47:09]important and if so why is it important what are some verses
[47:13]and some traditions of the quran that tell us about knowledge what
[47:18]is the proof and the existence of allah because the time and
[47:24]time again we're reminding you and i of allah to try to
[47:30]make us aware and have some ma'rafah of allah they never wanted
[47:35]us to accept them just for their sake as an endpoint they
[47:39]wanted to take our hands hold our hands and take us to
[47:42]allah therefore when someone comes forward today and questions the existence of
[47:49]allah you and i and we must have strong answers to this
[47:53]therefore we'll look at this and what is it that the ahlul
[47:57]bayt told us about with respect to the proof and the evidence
[48:02]of allah as well as what should our relationship be with allah
[48:06]and how did imam al hussain in his message in his walk
[48:11]in his talk and in every aspect of his life remind us
[48:15]of allah and knowledge of allah this is our agenda for tonight
[48:28]knowledge there was a very famous journal in iraq it was a
[48:32]publication that would come forward and talk about knowledge on the cover
[48:38]of this journal was some calligraphy some artwork the editor of the
[48:43]journal had the cover of the magazine behind his desk in his
[48:47]office one day a german researcher comes to his office he visits
[48:53]him in iraq when he visits him he says what's this artwork
[48:57]behind your desk can you please explain what am i seeing it
[49:01]was in arabic he didn't know oh he said this is the
[49:05]cover of our magazine our publication he said what does it say
[49:11]he says in the middle is a verse of the quran al
[49:14]majid of furqan al hamid says very well so what else he
[49:17]said in the four corners in each of the four corners of
[49:22]the cover there is a tradition of the prophet he said can
[49:26]you please tell me what it says i don't know what it
[49:28]says can you please explain he says in the middle is a
[49:31]verse from the quran the first verse of revelation he says what
[49:34]does it say it says read i said interesting i didn't know
[49:40]that wow he says what else does it say the first verse
[49:44]of revelation is read he said yes i said wow very interesting
[49:48]he said what else does it say he said there's another tradition
[49:52]there's four traditions from the prophet after the quran after the word
[49:57]of god muslims take the traditions of the prophet as most sacred
[50:00]he said what does it say he says it says there's a
[50:09]discussion amongst the scholars about whether it says muslim or muslim or
[50:13]muslim the scholars have said it says if it says only muslim
[50:17]that is like saying mankind it includes both genders male and female
[50:22]and if it is saying muslim or muslim then it's clear it's
[50:24]it's very clear it is specifically delineating regardless it says that no
[50:30]matter the gender obtaining knowledge is an obligation amongst every muslim he
[50:36]said really i didn't know that's very interesting meaning male and female
[50:40]have to obtain knowledge in islam said wow interesting he said what
[50:43]else does it say he says obtain knowledge from the cradle to
[50:51]the grave he said really it says obtain knowledge from cradle to
[50:55]grave meaning every single moment in time i should be obtaining knowledge
[51:01]it's not only i go to high school i graduate i go
[51:04]to college for three four years and then khalas i'm done no
[51:08]a believer at every moment in life must be learning he said
[51:12]very interesting the german researchers i didn't know that's very fascinating he
[51:15]said what else does it say he says it says that obtain
[51:20]knowledge obtain knowledge even if you have to go to china really
[51:29]because you know there's two things time and space zama'an and makan
[51:34]if i want to have a majlis if you want to have
[51:36]a majlis at your home people will ask you two questions what
[51:40]is the zaman and what is the makan what is the time
[51:43]and what is the place that is how i will get to
[51:45]the right place at the right time otherwise i can't get there
[51:49]he says wow islam says doesn't matter the gender male or female
[51:53]must obtain knowledge doesn't matter the time cradle to grave it doesn't
[51:58]even matter the space where you are you must even go to
[52:01]china to obtain knowledge he says what's the fourth tradition he says
[52:04]the fourth tradition of the prophet is that knowledge is the lost
[52:10]property of a the lost property of a believer obtain it from
[52:15]wherever you can he says i'm shocked the german researcher says it
[52:21]says the first verse of revelation read in the name of your
[52:24]lord this is what it says then there's four traditions that says
[52:28]it is of obligation amongst male and female gender doesn't matter then
[52:31]the next one says from cradle to grave time doesn't matter then
[52:35]it says obtain knowledge even if you have to go to china
[52:38]the space doesn't matter go anywhere and third it doesn't even matter
[52:43]who the teacher is obtain knowledge from anyone because that's your lost
[52:47]property the german researcher looked at the editor after reading these he
[52:52]says i am shocked that the muslim community is not leading the
[52:57]world in sciences in mathematics and physics in the world how is
[53:01]this possible it wasn't always like this if you read the history
[53:07]of islamic civilizations it wasn't always like this if you look at
[53:13]the period from august to november three hundred years the center of
[53:21]all knowledge in the world was baghdad of all knowledge undisputed by
[53:29]all scientists there's no doubt about it mathematics physics chemistry you name
[53:35]the science it came from there of course in light of the
[53:39]tradition of our ahlul bayt and other people as well but what
[53:45]happened do you know the x you know when our youth go
[53:49]and study 2x equals four what does x equal two ahsentum where
[53:55]do we get this x from do we know do we know
[53:58]the heritage what happened the first book on algebra was a book
[54:04]called by muhammad al khawarizmi do you know when he wrote the
[54:13]book why x why x when he wrote the book he did
[54:17]not have equations in the book he had paragraphs that were in
[54:21]written form so he did not say two x equals four what
[54:25]did he say he says two times a thing what is arabic
[54:29]word for thing shay he says two times shay equals four that
[54:35]was what he said when the researchers and the writers of the
[54:39]greek language when they got this book which was an applied mathematics
[54:43]book it was an applied business mathematics book it was the first
[54:47]book on algebra that we had he said that they said that
[54:50]the greeks said we don't have in our alphabet in our language
[54:55]we don't have the word we don't have that word it's an
[54:57]arabic word so how do we translate this they said the closest
[55:02]thing that we have in our language to or thing is the
[55:06]greek letter chi you remember chi squared statistics you remember this in
[55:11]your math classes chi the greek letter chi they said shay becomes
[55:16]chi when the greeks had their books the latins came forward and
[55:21]they said we do not have kai in our language how do
[55:25]we translate they said the closest thing that we have to kai
[55:28]in our language is x therefore the heritage of that x that
[55:34]you and i solve for why not a why not b why
[55:36]not c it is from the work of muhammad al kawarizmi in
[55:39]kitab al jabbar wal muqabal by the way that is where the
[55:43]word algebra comes from al jabbar you can thank him when you
[55:49]do your math homework next time the idea is this is what
[55:52]happened furthermore what does the world run on today what is the
[55:58]most sought after company to work in in the world today you
[56:02]find people for example in the big four and the big companies
[56:05]in silicon valley you will find the likes of microsoft and you
[56:07]will find amazon and facebook and the likes the most sought after
[56:11]company to work for today is google google people go there for
[56:16]the salary and all those things but the free haircuts and the
[56:18]free food and all that what does google run on what made
[56:23]google google there is something that you will know in the background
[56:28]called an algorithm when you type into google it searches for you
[56:35]that is an algorithm a repeating process do you know where the
[56:39]term algorithm comes from it is literally a latinization of khawarizmi literally
[56:47]i can go on for an hour just talking about the scientific
[56:50]accomplishments of this age and this era however i want to make
[56:55]a point here and the reality is if we as muslims say
[57:00]we used to be great we were great from august to november
[57:05]we were great we were the best we are looking in the
[57:08]rearview mirror and what can you not do when you are looking
[57:13]in the rearview mirror when you are looking in the rearview mirror
[57:17]you cannot look forward you are looking back we must look forward
[57:24]you and i and we our generation and the next generation we
[57:28]should be the ones reviving this tradition in light of for example
[57:32]the letter of sayyid ali al sistani to a group of youth
[57:35]who asked him sayyid can you please give us some advice and
[57:39]he gave beautiful advice i recommend we all read his letter to
[57:43]a group of college students who asked for some advice in that
[57:47]letter one of the points that he says is to try to
[57:50]obtain knowledge and try to specialize in a subject if you can
[57:55]in medicine in law in economics in journalism you pick the field
[57:58]try to specialize then he says a beautiful point he says why
[58:03]is it that we benefit from the works of others why is
[58:07]it that we benefit from the researchers of others the textbooks of
[58:12]others the journals of others but why do we not contribute meaning
[58:17]why is our name not on the front of the text book
[58:21]alhamdulillah some people are doing their work may allah reward them remember
[58:26]knowledge divided do not say this is islamic this is un islamic
[58:30]divide knowledge in one of two ways knowledge is either qurbatani or
[58:35]not knowledge either takes you closer to allah or not that same
[58:40]biology class where i'm studying the cell that same organic chemistry class
[58:44]where i'm studying about the bonds that are created in chemistry that
[58:48]same physics class that same mathematics class if i understand that this
[58:53]is created from allah that takes me closer to allah and if
[58:59]i don't that can take me further the same class we must
[59:03]be mindful of this tradition francis bacon the founder of the scientific
[59:09]method you know the scientific method which is considered in the last
[59:13]five hundred fifty years it is considered one of the greatest accomplishments
[59:17]of the human mind that and calculus for example francis bacon the
[59:23]founder of the scientific method he says a little bit of knowledge
[59:27]inclines a man to atheism depth of knowledge leads a man to
[59:32]god you and i must strive to get a depth level of
[59:37]understanding and depth of knowledge therefore if we as followers of the
[59:43]ahlul bayt our current generations our next generations and the ones after
[59:47]that they begin to doubt the existence of allah where will we
[59:52]be these concepts of usuluddin these concepts are concepts that each one
[60:02]of us on we must have our own we must have our
[60:07]own evidence i can do i can follow or whatever i want
[60:13]in the issues of and salaam all these things amr bil ma'ruf
[60:19]nain al munqar in these things i can follow marja but in
[60:22]the issue of usul when it is respect to my creed what
[60:26]i believe i must have my own evidence i tell you with
[60:30]my hand on my heart some of the biggest atheists in the
[60:34]world today whose names i don't wish to take from here their
[60:37]students their biggest students come from a shia family not only shia
[60:43]family they come from sadat families from the ahlul bayt i can
[60:47]tell you which imam also how did we get to this point
[60:52]that followers of the ahlul bayt who trace their lineage to the
[60:56]ahlul are now saying we don't believe in the existence of god
[61:02]i'm giving you the proof and evidence and the response today stephen
[61:06]hawking in his book the very famous physicist in his book a
[61:10]brief history of time he says the concept of the big bang
[61:14]when our universe began when our universe started roughly fourteen billion years
[61:20]ago he says he crunched all the numbers he shows the numbers
[61:26]he says i can tell you what the example of how this
[61:28]universe emerged but you won't understand the numbers let me give you
[61:32]an example by the way a side note we have been sold
[61:36]a pill we have been told a false truth that most scientists
[61:42]don't believe in god it's not true if you read the history
[61:46]copernicus and the likes and you go to isaac newton you go
[61:50]to for example albert einstein all of these people believed in god
[61:55]in fact you know the big bang theory you and i may
[61:58]ask does islam accept big bang whatnot do you know who the
[62:01]founder of the big bang theory was his name was lamaatra the
[62:08]founder of the big bang theory was a belgian researcher his name
[62:13]was lamaatra he was a physicist but do you know what else
[62:17]he was he was a priest you can see his pictures wearing
[62:23]the religious guard he said the big bang theory for me is
[62:27]very easy it is very clear god had created the big bang
[62:31]it's no doubt in my mind this capsule that we have been
[62:34]sold that islam is in contradiction or religion is a contradiction but
[62:38]remember science evolves therefore stephen hawking in his book a brief history
[62:43]of time he argues that our world that we exist in fourteen
[62:47]billion years ago with the big bang came into existence he says
[62:50]what happened before is for the philosophers to debate but he said
[62:53]i will give you an example the example of how this world
[62:57]came into existence professor stephen hawking who passed away a few years
[63:00]ago says it is as if i put a bunch of monkeys
[63:04]you know monkeys i put a bunch of monkeys in a room
[63:06]and in that same room i put a typewriter you know what
[63:11]a typewriter is if you don't remember typewriter keyboard some may not
[63:16]even remember that he says typewriter put it in the room put
[63:19]the monkeys in the room and after some time those same monkeys
[63:25]they begin to tap on the typewriter and they create not words
[63:31]not sentences not paragraphs but those same monkeys stephen hawking says they
[63:37]create the poetry the sonnets of shakespeare the greatest poet in the
[63:43]history of the english language his sonnets they create one of them
[63:47]that's the example there was a professor another physicist by the name
[63:51]of professor schroeder professor schroeder read the analogy that stephen hawkings gave
[63:57]in his book and he said really mister stephen hawkings are you
[64:01]saying that the analogy of this world coming into existence it is
[64:05]like in this world putting a group of monkeys into a room
[64:09]and them typing at a typewriter he said very interesting he said
[64:13]i want to share something with you researchers at the british council
[64:17]of arts have already done this study he writes in response to
[64:21]hawkings he says they put a group of monkeys into a room
[64:26]for one month and they put a typewriter into the room he
[64:31]said do you know what the results were he said they put
[64:34]the researchers put a group of monkeys into a room and they
[64:37]put a typewriter in the room when they put the typewriter in
[64:40]the room they observed the monkeys for days do you know what
[64:44]happened for the first two days the monkeys did not even go
[64:49]near the typewriter after a few days a week you know what
[64:55]happened they began to use not my words the words of the
[64:58]researchers they began to use the typewriter like a toilet monkeys he
[65:04]said after some time they began to poke at the buttons of
[65:07]the typewriter he said do you know what happened they began to
[65:11]tap and tap and tap away what's the shortest word in the
[65:15]english language a i a and i but what do you need
[65:21]for it to be a word in order for it to be
[65:25]a word you need a space before it and a space after
[65:28]it otherwise it's not a word they said after one month those
[65:34]same monkeys they produced 50 pages of content when they produced 50
[65:40]pages of content they said how many words are there in this
[65:45]language when they looked at the numbers and they went through the
[65:49]50 page they went through page after page and when they looked
[66:07]through the content they went through 50 pages they said after all
[66:11]of the typing that the monkeys had done on the keyboard they
[66:15]found that they did not produce a single word in the english
[66:19]language zero nothing then professor schroeder crunches the numbers by the way
[66:25]a side note in mathematics and statistics i don't want to make
[66:28]this too complex i'll simplify there's a concept called statistical zero this
[66:32]is a number that is so small it is as if it
[66:35]is zero this number is one over 10 to the 50 or
[66:39]in simple terms zero point zero followed by 50 zeros just keep
[66:45]this in the back of your mind professor schroeder said let me
[66:49]take one of the sonnets of shakespeare he says shall i compare
[66:53]thee to a summer he says i took that one when i
[66:56]crunched the numbers he said how many letters are in the english
[66:59]language he said there are 26 letters in the english language how
[67:03]many words are in the poem how shall i compare thee to
[67:06]a summer he said there are 488 words i am giving the
[67:11]answer for our youth and our next generation he said 26 raised
[67:15]to the four hundred and eighty eighth power he converted this number
[67:19]to base 10 he said when he converted this number to base
[67:22]10 he said it became 10 raised to the six hundred and
[67:26]ninetieth power he put one over 10 raised to the six hundred
[67:30]and ninetieth power he said this number is zero point zero followed
[67:35]by 690 zeros he said this number is so small that no
[67:42]scientist worth their weight would ever bet their career on this do
[67:48]you know how small this number is we cannot fathom these are
[67:51]exponents by the way for those who know and in exponents it's
[67:55]not that this is thirteen fourteen times smaller than statistical zero 10
[68:00]to the negative 50 this is 690 minus 50 it's 640 times
[68:08]smaller than statistical zero it is such a small probability he says
[68:13]schroeder says to stephen hawkings do you really believe that this universe
[68:17]was so accidental he said no scientist will accept this i want
[68:23]you to remember this name never forget it antony flew a n
[68:27]t o n y f l e w the biggest atheist of
[68:33]the last one hundred years he just died a few years ago
[68:36]he was the reason that so many people said we don't believe
[68:40]in god they became atheists because of anthony flu a few years
[68:46]before mr anthony flu doctor anthony flu died he said i change
[68:51]my mind i believe in god they said anthony flew we became
[68:57]atheists because you were the biggest atheists your deliyahs your proof your
[69:02]evidence told us that there is no god now before you're dying
[69:06]you are changing your mind how what he said two things do
[69:10]not allow me to remain an atheist he said what are they
[69:14]he says number one was the response by doctor schroeder to stephen
[69:18]hawkings the one i just show shared with you the monkeys in
[69:21]the keyboard he said that proved to me that this world cannot
[69:24]be an accident he says what is the second thing and the
[69:28]more important thing he says the second thing and the more important
[69:31]thing that proved to me the existence of god were three letters
[69:36]he says three letters what he said deoxyribonucleic acid dna he said
[69:45]what about dna dna did not allow you to remain an atheist
[69:48]what about it he says do you know how much information do
[69:54]you know how much data is encoded encapsulated in the human dna
[70:00]you know that dna that gives you your skin color your hair
[70:03]color your behavioral attributes that makes you you that data is encoded
[70:07]do you know how much information i won't bother you i won't
[70:10]trouble you with the data i won't trouble you with the numbers
[70:13]just know this that there is not that much data with data
[70:16]science and all of the emerging technology that's coming in our world
[70:20]there is not that much data in the entire world today we
[70:24]will not hit that number until 2025 that's how much data is
[70:27]in each individual's dna he said that data that is in human
[70:32]dna it is encoded it is programmed you know the adenine guanine
[70:37]cytosine you know this that data is encoded in the human dna
[70:41]he says whenever you see something that is programmed know there's a
[70:47]programmer he says that programmer is god that means that the dalil
[70:53]and the proof and the evidence is there therefore anthony flew wrote
[70:56]a book before he died he wrote there is no god the
[71:00]title of the book there is no god then he crossed out
[71:03]no and he said there is a god when you reflect 700
[71:08]verses plus over 700 verses of the quran say reflect contemplate on
[71:17]this universe this is the proof for others amir al mumineen was
[71:23]asked what's the proof of the existence of god he says when
[71:26]man walks in the desert and he walks by the sand and
[71:29]when animals walk by in the sand they leave their footprints in
[71:33]the sand and they give evidence that there were people here there
[71:37]were animals here does this world not give you evidence that there
[71:40]was a creator here at the same point in time amir al
[71:44]mumineen has asked about this he says if a man who does
[71:48]not believe comes to him he says ali if you die and
[71:52]there is no qayama there is no hereafter there is nothing afterwards
[71:56]what will you do he says that if i die and there
[72:01]is nothing afterwards i will be content with my life because i
[72:05]was honest i was fair i did not cheat anyone and then
[72:08]he looked at him if you die tomorrow and there is hisab
[72:12]there is kitab there is ma'ad there is a hereafter what will
[72:15]you do he had no answer abu shakir asks our sixth imam
[72:21]he says i am not convinced on god there was a young
[72:26]child who was walking by the sixth imam he had an egg
[72:29]in his hand and when he was walking by the imam requested
[72:33]the child to give him this egg he took the egg he
[72:36]raised it he said abu shakir look at this imagine i tell
[72:40]you there is a fortress and in this fortress there is a
[72:45]thin film covering the fortress and inside the fortress there is molten
[72:50]liquid hot liquid silver there is molten liquid silver and he said
[72:56]what if i tell you inside the liquid silver is liquid gold
[73:01]and the liquid gold does not mix with the liquid silver and
[73:04]the liquid silver does not mix with the liquid gold and no
[73:08]one has gone out inside of it and no one has come
[73:11]out of it and after some time abu shakir there will emerge
[73:15]from this a creation and a creature there was no one to
[73:18]come and design its nose its beak its feathers its cartilage every
[73:23]aspect of its body there was no one to design it abu
[73:28]shakir said today i understood they asked the eighth imam they said
[73:35]why did allah subhanahu wa ta'ala create so many creations so many
[73:39]creatures so many things you know our world some people are saying
[73:43]go to mars let's go and explore mars very good alhamdulillah there
[73:47]are other people such as ray dalio who are saying let's go
[73:50]to the oceans the earth is majority ocean we don't even know
[73:53]the species that are in the ocean the amazon rainforest that was
[73:57]burning not too long ago every day we are finding new species
[74:01]we don't know the fish that exist we don't know the birds
[74:03]that exist we don't know anything that exists he asked him he
[74:07]said why did allah create so many birds why did allah create
[74:11]so many creations so many animals he said it's because so on
[74:15]on the day of judgment no one can come to allah and
[74:20]say i thought of something oh allah that you did not think
[74:24]of this is the proof and the evidence for others and i
[74:34]am concluding but for you and i the proof and the evidence
[74:38]of the existence of allah we need to look and search no
[74:43]further than imam al hussain imam al hussain says my lord my
[74:50]creator allah what has he gained who has lost you and what
[74:56]has he lost who has gained you allahu akbar this is the
[75:01]message of imam al hussain you and i must be followers of
[75:06]knowledge and we must be followers of the ahlul bayt alayhi musalam
[75:09]and especially we must be followers and have daleel and proof and
[75:14]evidence of why we believe what we believe in dua'i arafa which
[75:18]the imam our third imam gives on the plains of arafa temporaneously
[75:23]off the cuff as we say he tells it is as if
[75:27]he is giving a complete anatomical study of the human body he
[75:31]says o allah by the matrices of my dents and the jaw
[75:34]and the socket and the aorta and the rib cages and he
[75:37]goes into the depths obtain that depth of knowledge so we can
[75:41]have a fraction a fraction of a fraction of the of once
