[1:05]all praise belongs to allah and i begin in his blessed name

[1:08]for granting us this life and giving us the opportunity to exist

[1:12]and he has perfected us in our existence in the sense that

[1:16]he has given us maximum potentials as human beings and when we

[1:21]say perfected we sometimes wonder how can that be when we have

[1:25]so many imperfections well that is the system of perfection for the

[1:30]very essence of having imperfection with the potential to eliminate the imperfection

[1:38]this system in holistic sense is perfect and allah has placed us

[1:43]on this earth for a short period of time as we know

[1:46]even if we lived on this earth for ten thousand years it's

[1:50]relatively short compared to the infinite time that awaits us and given

[1:55]the fact that we are very intelligent beings allah has shaped us

[2:00]in a beautiful fashion allah has made mankind in the best of

[2:08]forms allah says allah allah creates is good he makes everything good

[2:17]our existence is good even that which we don't like is essentially

[2:21]good it's a philosophical conversation and i hope someday we will be

[2:26]able to grasp the holistic nature of god's infinite goodness in what

[2:32]he creates lest we become atheists and become very very despondent and

[2:39]unhappy with the the reality of the universe the ones we think

[2:44]that are not good allah has blessed us in this world has

[2:49]kept us on this earth for a short period of time and

[2:51]we wonder why did allah not put us in paradise directly and

[2:54]save us the trouble of going through this heartache and the trials

[2:58]and the tribulations with which we have to live under and potentially

[3:02]of course lose the potential of lose the entrance into paradise for

[3:10]hell is certainly a reality and as i mentioned yesterday hell is

[3:14]a reality the good news is that it's not easy to get

[3:18]into hell you might say no brother we've always been told it's

[3:22]very easy to enter hell it's very difficult to enter paradise and

[3:25]we've been told that a minority of people will enter paradise and

[3:29]the majority will go to hell well let's examine the of allah

[3:34]on a holistic scale if one were to really say that then

[3:38]one would say that allah is really not merciful because he created

[3:42]a system where the majority is always going to hell and the

[3:47]overwhelming wisdom would tell you then that such a creation should never

[3:51]have been put into existence to begin with and allah is merciful

[3:56]and allah is most wise and he's most just allah is the

[4:04]wisest of the wise then why put this system together so on

[4:09]a cursory level of discussion tonight especially tonight as you know is

[4:13]the night in the commemoration of arba'in arba'in as you know is

[4:18]the forty days after the momentous event of the massacre of imam

[4:23]hussain and his family and the companions on the battlefield of karbala

[4:29]14 centuries ago roughly 14 centuries ago actually sixty one years after

[4:35]hizra and why do we commemorate this forty days why do we

[4:40]even commemorate on the ashura night why do we need to what's

[4:44]the essential nature of that do we need to shed tears is

[4:48]it essential is this just a ritual that we have sort of

[4:52]concocted within our own systems to keep us busy with some kind

[4:56]of transaction like going to the entertainment industry and just entertaining ourselves

[5:02]is this entertainment these are important points we need to discuss and

[5:07]question because ultimately you will see that this transient world where we

[5:14]live in a short period of time there is room for entertainment

[5:18]there is room for slipping and going away from allah but holistically

[5:22]we have to be very vigilant and careful for this life has

[5:27]a fundamental principle with which for us succeed and to achieve the

[5:32]highest stations possible now if you have doubts about that let me

[5:36]explain when our children are born parents keep them very much in

[5:42]check and by the time they are five years of age they're

[5:44]putting them in school why not when they're seven he says no

[5:48]five they need to start school at five in fact earlier than

[5:52]five maybe four maybe even three why why not wait no because

[5:58]time is against this child and this child better graduate by the

[6:02]time they're 17 18 because they have to head to the university

[6:17]with children and now they're becoming parents and they are setting their

[6:21]own future so that by the time they're forties and in their

[6:24]fifties they have realized the true value of life and then you

[6:28]start talking about your impending death although death does not discriminate as

[6:32]you know allah takes children even away from their mother's wombs but

[6:38]in a general sense we know that time has a factor and

[6:42]therefore we realize that if we do not catch the moment we

[6:46]may lose the opportunity we all agree with that even in the

[6:50]workforce you'll notice that older people who are in their fifties and

[6:52]sixties have a harder time getting hired unless they're highly experienced corporations

[6:59]consider them more of a liability because they will retire soon and

[7:04]they demand higher salaries because of their experiences and they feel that

[7:08]younger blood is cheaper and more malleable and more adaptable so notice

[7:14]time is against us even on the economic scale and when we

[7:18]have our nest eggs even when you take insurance the older you

[7:21]get the higher the premium because actuarial science says that well there's

[7:25]a higher chance you will die so everything is very clearly shown

[7:29]to us that if we take a scale that in the western

[7:32]world today the average lifespan is 75 to 80 years of age

[7:35]which is great in rome the average life was 35 so it's

[7:40]good even seventy five eighty ninety thousand years there's a scale and

[7:47]then within the scale we better fulfill the objectives otherwise we're going

[7:54]to lose so when i'm saying that why these rituals why these

[7:58]prayers why do we come and do these programs you know we

[8:03]have to understand the gravity of what awaits us in the next

[8:06]world what i mentioned before just now is all about securing ourselves

[8:11]in this world education money security children right these are all material

[8:17]things and they're all part of deen they're all part of the

[8:21]foundation of the hereafter remember there's no separation of the dunya things

[8:26]that we do the worldly things that we do you cannot separate

[8:29]them from the hereafter effects and everything we do in this world

[8:34]is within the prescription of allah there's no such a thing as

[8:37]you know religious and non religious everything is within the prescriptions of

[8:49]so everything there's nothing you and i can do and allah has

[8:53]established this and allah wants us to recognize that we placed you

[8:56]on this earth for a strategic reason so within this scope of

[9:02]time these conversations and why are we commemorating karbala why are we

[9:06]talking about imam hussein it's all built on a grand scale of

[9:09]things that while i'm busy pursuing my education the human race will

[9:14]tell you that even if i achieve all educations and i achieve

[9:17]all degrees which we should ultimately what really the bottom line that

[9:22]counts is my spiritual harmony my spiritual success my vision for the

[9:28]long term where am i going with all this okay i've achieved

[9:33]an empire i've become a billionaire where do i go from here

[9:37]even michael phelps think about it my brothers and sisters michael phelps

[9:45]four years ago when he achieved all those medals was at the

[9:49]peak of his life and to be a swimmer of that caliber

[9:54]is not easy i swim it's very difficult to swim that fast

[10:53]people how does a person like him lose vision he had no

[10:57]long term vision when he achieved his goals he said what do

[11:00]i do with the what do i do now i don't know

[11:02]what else is there in life so i got my medals all

[11:59]this world god says no allah says the hereafter is better for

[12:05]you it's eternal it's got a vision that is so long term

[12:09]it never ends think about that brothers and sisters if i told

[12:14]you that you and i will achieve great success for a billion

[12:16]years and then after that we will vanish and not exist it's

[12:19]torture you say but i've got ten billion years of pleasure yes

[12:23]but it's countdown it's ten billion years less one day and it's

[12:29]countdown and the closer you get to the ending point the more

[12:33]you die and the pleasure becomes torture see the of allah is

[12:39]entirely built on the eternity of existence allah says those who believe

[12:54]and do good for them they will have paradise they will live

[12:58]in it this is a a promise of god that is true

[13:05]god does not forego his promise when he promises and it's rational

[13:10]you know what is the greatest fear of an atheist it's precisely

[13:14]this idea of ceasing to exist when you die then all this

[13:20]effort is absurd it's like saying study hard work very hard achieve

[13:28]high stations get your degree get your phd postgraduate do all kinds

[13:36]of postdoc and then when you've got it all go to the

[13:40]shredder and shred it what would you do would you ever go

[13:46]to school would you ever study it's absurd if the end is

[13:52]precisely to destroy what i'm doing then why should i do anything

[13:58]alhamdulillah even for the atheists they realized that even on a temporal

[14:02]basis they need to be good for good comes back to you

[14:06]they say what goes around comes around and allah has built a

[14:10]check system that the human being functions optimally even if they reject

[14:16]allah at the humanist level that they are capable of committing some

[14:21]good because of their fear of the repercussions should they be bad

[14:25]though holistically it's bankrupt this notion of atheistic notion is bankrupt in

[14:30]my opinion clearly bankrupt the real ideology is that there is an

[14:35]eternity of vision and there's an eternity of intentions it's not some

[14:40]stupid system out there that people like dawkins talks about that suddenly

[14:44]things evolved into some stupid and intelligent systems no it's visionary our

[14:50]existence has been placed by divine ordinances the only logical answer and

[14:56]that our eternity is built in such with such details and clarity

[15:03]that every move we make has a reason and even philosophers will

[15:07]tell you that when you ask the question why there is always

[15:11]a because muhammad the reason i'm speaking this way is because when

[15:22]we lose faith in allah we see within our societies today families

[15:28]breaking up kids indulging in alcohol and drinking i mean other you

[15:33]know heavy heavy drinks drugs marijuana is very common these days it's

[15:39]being legalized in america all over the place it's all because of

[15:43]money you know that it's all about economics it's not about our

[15:46]future and our health trust me even the food triangle that's built

[15:52]the base is all about lobbyists who puts the most money in

[15:55]washington and the fda will approve you and give you power in

[15:59]in washington you look at our there is a level of sanity

[16:02]alhamdulillah that the fda has some level of sanity to control our

[16:07]health but holistically when you pay big money people look aside for

[16:12]example do you know that alcohol is legally a drug by any

[16:17]standards it's actually a drug but they do not classify it as

[16:21]a drug because it'll come under the fda control and the lobbyists

[16:25]made such efforts to ensure that alcohol always remains a side issue

[16:31]while the societies are being destroyed due to this consumption they have

[16:35]become the biggest financiers of all our programs so they've infiltrated our

[16:39]various systems in government in sports in everything they have a hand

[16:45]in it what ends up happening then is that our moral construction

[16:49]starts to fall apart because our zeal and our desire for wealth

[16:53]and power over arches our responsibility as moral human beings hence today

[17:02]you see the presidency in the elections and all kinds of vulgar

[17:08]conversations take place phalanderers adulterers soul crass and gross xenophobes islamophobes you

[17:19]know bigotry outright bigotry the same bigotry of iblis that he lost

[17:25]his status because of his bigotry that bigotry is now coming in

[17:29]public and people are saying that's okay it's okay it's fine presidents

[17:35]are caught committing adultery in the oval office it's okay it's okay

[17:40]what has happened to our moral system what has happened to the

[17:43]future of our children that our children are being told to be

[17:45]modest and honest and upright when they're seeing the very system that's

[17:49]governing our entire world today doesn't have that foundation of good morals

[17:54]what are we going to do with our future brothers and sisters

[17:56]tell me and this is not a conversation about muslims within islam

[18:00]or within the shia or the school of jaffari this is for

[18:04]humanity this conversation ask any human being ask any and christians and

[18:10]jews out there are moral people atheists out there are moral people

[18:14]hindus are moral people they're not immoral the majority of the human

[18:17]race is moral but in the very foundation with which we live

[18:22]in is losing its foundations what do we do as a human

[18:26]race and how do we guarantee ourselves good exit from this world

[18:30]as moral upright standing human beings is it easy you walk today

[18:36]you drive on the highways and see how many billboards are alluding

[18:39]to sexual innuendos of half naked scanty dressed people that are trying

[18:44]to excite us to buy something through our passions it's a very

[18:49]common marketing scheme should we allow that should we even accept that

[18:53]we said well you know it's freedom of expression no one has

[18:56]said freedom of expression is denied allah expresses in the quran the

[19:00]power of freedom of expression but there is a moral conscience with

[19:04]which we have to follow and there should be a red line

[19:07]where we draw to say no we don't accept this but even

[19:10]when we don't accept it we should not go killing people we

[19:13]should not go shooting people and beheading people because we don't accept

[19:16]it there has to be a dialogue of invitation and allah says

[19:28]invite people to the way of your lord with wisdom and kind

[19:31]exhortation and use sound argumentation not violence even musa who disagreed with

[19:37]firaun who was a wretched individual an individual who was a genocidal

[19:45]murderer who indiscriminately killed even infants yet musa was not allowed to

[19:52]slap him musa was not allowed to harm him even with his

[19:57]stick whereas allah says when you go speak to firaun allah says

[20:05]speak with a soft tongue when you talk to firaun soft tongue

[20:10]allah says this is islam the religion of peace not the religion

[20:15]of violence that comes in and destroys mankind because there's a disagreement

[20:19]no no allah has made every one of us uniquely different there

[20:24]are no two people on earth who agree on everything even identical

[20:29]twins don't agree on everything there are no two human beings who

[20:33]agree on everything even a child born of its mother does not

[20:36]agree everything with its mother why because allah made us unique so

[20:43]difference of opinion is here to stay so that means we say

[20:47]we have to agree to disagree agreeably we have to come to

[20:51]equitable terms to say okay you have a different pathway no problem

[20:57]we're all going back to allah he will deal with us and

[21:02]manage our differences and i love that concept allah is maliki ummideen

[21:08]not you and i so when it comes to punitive measures where

[21:12]we pass judgments and destroy people and condemn people to hell it's

[21:16]not within the scope of islam it's not in the scope of

[21:20]islam it is for you and i to be vigilant to understand

[21:24]the purpose of this life and never to discount the eternity of

[21:27]our existence and never to say that i will not exist when

[21:31]i die or there's nothing after my death that's absurd and in

[21:35]fact if you and i even entertain such thoughts our moral fabric

[21:39]our drive our ambitions in this world will cease to have direction

[21:44]it could even be extremely dangerous for then we will say i'm

[21:47]at that moment of total annihilation so i might as well annihilate

[21:51]while i can get my hands on it and this is why

[21:53]people like you know pol pot you know and if you look

[21:57]at people like stalin hitler yazid they did not believe in the

[22:07]hereafter they used to say there is no hereafter it doesn't exist

[22:11]and allah mentions that in the quran when the angels are asking

[22:14]them allah says they will be asked before they are flung in

[22:35]hell didn't want to come to you the angels are concerned how

[22:38]did you reach here how did you get to hell god is

[22:42]too merciful he put a prophet in you you know the prophet

[22:48]said there are two messengers the inner and the outer the inner

[22:51]is your soul the conscience and the outer are the prophets and

[22:57]the quran and the imams angels are surprised how did you get

[23:02]here it's not easy to get to hell didn't a wanner come

[23:10]to you and allah mentions in the quran we never punish a

[23:13]community until we want it first allah is so direct and careful

[23:21]in this matter allah says allah never sends messengers except by the

[23:33]language of its people so that they are explained with clarity so

[23:38]prophets don't come with foreign language or foreign ideologies or foreign understandings

[23:43]or they don't understand the lingo or the culture and the expressions

[23:48]of this community and then they're going to come and tell people

[23:51]about god allah says i don't do that i send messengers with

[23:54]clear i am a clear warner so the angels are asking didn't

[24:04]warners come to you nay they did but when they came we

[24:10]belied them we called them liars we said there is no revelation

[24:15]you see we belied them and we called them liars you are

[24:24]lost in great utter loss these are the enemies the umayyads for

[24:28]example in the modern day people today who are enemies of allah

[24:32]will say the same thing there's no revelation this quran is just

[24:34]a concoction there's no revelation there was there's no god there's no

[24:48]will say had we not if only we would have listened and

[24:59]paid attention we would not be the inmates of this fire meaning

[25:04]we were troublemakers we caused hell on earth we rejected the eternity

[25:10]we rejected the purpose of our existence we rejected why god was

[25:19]caused destructions we dropped bombs we lied we cheated we became politicians

[25:24]we said one thing and then when we got elected we changed

[25:38]through his teeth you know mendaciously so allah says you created trouble

[25:49]fasad has appeared on land and on the seas so brothers and

[25:55]sisters what's the message of these nights of arbaeen when we remember

[26:00]imam zainul abidin we remember imam hussein there is a bigger picture

[26:04]we're missing out and sometimes we forget because we're so ritualized it's

[26:09]become cyclical it's become like a little drug that we need to

[26:12]have you know to feel good but we just don't want to

[26:16]reflect on it whereas what allah has left us with in terms

[26:21]of the quran in terms of the prophets and the ahlul bayt

[26:25]the celebrations and the commemorations are all part of we reveal to

[26:33]you the zikr what is zikr remembrance why is remembrance important why

[26:39]these gatherings are important i'll explain briefly as i mentioned yesterday human

[26:48]nature is that within us we all are conscientious beings and there's

[26:53]something innate in us about our morals often we don't discuss the

[26:59]impetus of life as to why we exist and we become very

[27:04]surviving you know day to day happy go lucky kind of people

[27:08]we forget the long term mission of why we're here we become

[27:13]survivors we start cheating we start grabbing on it's like that rough

[27:18]sea i don't care about where i'm going to end up on

[27:20]the land i just need to find me something now before i

[27:23]drown that attitude no long term vision what happens is we start

[27:30]losing focus when we lose focus you find pandemonium starts to take

[27:34]over chaos anarchy people become rough if you look at what happened

[27:39]in katrina's time when the flood came in there was so much

[27:43]chaos police were shooting people people were shooting the police people were

[27:47]robbing killing taking everything because it was pandemonium it was survive like

[27:53]in a war you see people some some of our members in

[27:56]our community lived in civil wars in the countries they've come from

[28:00]until today if you listen if you watch them you'll see they're

[28:02]always looking over their shoulders because the impact of a civil war

[28:06]is so deadly that you cannot trust anybody and you cannot let

[28:12]go of that pain that you felt the precarious moment right we

[28:19]become survivors and what happens then is we lose focus and the

[28:24]minute we lose focus what happens is we become day to day

[28:28]machiavellian creatures if i can get it now i can cheat you

[28:31]i can rob you now that's what counts i don't care when

[28:34]i die tomorrow we'll worry about tomorrow tomorrow because as far as

[28:37]i'm concerned i'm in survival mode this behavior is dangerous the real

[28:44]person on earth in our opinion who we should look at as

[28:47]leaders as ones who we should honor the ones who we should

[28:52]emulate the ones we should hope to be like and our children

[28:56]to be like are the ones where there's trials and tribulations they're

[29:01]in survival mode they're being annihilated they don't lose hope in the

[29:05]eternity of their existence brothers and sisters study religions there are many

[29:12]five six major ones in the world nobody has the kind of

[29:17]moral lessons you and i have in these lessons of karbala and

[29:21]ahlul bayt and the prophets nobody when allah says when allah says

[29:45]you will have trials and tribulations in this world promise allah says

[29:50]this world is precarious you can build palaces you can stash your

[29:54]money away somebody's gonna come and grab it and your children may

[29:59]be taken as hostages or a little creature will land into your

[30:04]body and cause havoc in you and cause you to be diseased

[30:08]or you will inherit something that will cause you to all the

[30:12]time be unwell family problems you want a family wants b there's

[30:22]chaos you can't stabilize it's a world it's very very difficult in

[30:28]this world for you and i to reach harmony and stability it's

[30:32]just by the law of god's system and allah has created this

[30:34]strategically for one reason and one reason alone so that you and

[30:40]i understand that nothing is important but the eternal one when i

[30:47]accomplish my wealth and my successes and i have all my stability

[30:53]allah says that is not stability that's finite it will crumble and

[30:58]your wealth will be distributed after you die your children will leave

[31:03]you your wives and your spouses your husbands and wives may go

[31:08]and remarry after you're gone it's not permanent you may not be

[31:13]together in the next world inshallah spouses will be together if they're

[31:17]really good spiritually like prophet in but the point is in general

[31:22]it's temporal allah says examine in this world that while you're busy

[31:27]surviving who gives you stability the human being says i want stability

[31:32]the conscious says how what kind of stability the finite kind that's

[31:36]for billion years or the infinite one that never ends and the

[31:41]conscious says of course the infinite one even fairytales will tell you

[31:44]the prince and the princess lived happily ever after they didn't grow

[31:49]old and scoliosis and die and their teeth fell off it's bad

[31:54]for fantasy isn't it we want it forever do they grow old

[32:00]no young as ever forever subhanallah allah says who has that you

[32:08]your money your family your wealth and your family are a trial

[32:15]on you they're a blessing but they're a trial examine catch on

[32:19]to it understand it now when you have that vision of eternity

[32:24]and you know that my god created me i didn't exist before

[32:28]he shaped me but i had nothing to do with it and

[32:31]he so mercifully put me in a universe that's designed to sustain

[32:34]my life and to make me happy such that i think the

[32:37]earth is flat when it's not it's a sphere but god is

[32:41]so merciful that he stabilized it he the earth is moving at

[32:45]a rapid speed around the sun and yet i don't feel it

[32:47]god says that's what i've done for you you think i'm gonna

[32:50]leave you alone after you die you think i'm going to scramble

[32:55]you in the middle of the desert after you die i made

[32:58]you this way to enjoy this world when you didn't deserve it

[33:02]what do you think i'm going to do when you die allah

[33:05]says you have no idea how merciful i am and what awaits

[33:08]you there is so great that be patient in this life but

[33:13]your vision should be long term and i've given you examples of

[33:17]people whose families have been annihilated on battlefields and they never turned

[33:22]away from allah imam hussein takes this little child abdullah known as

[33:28]ali al asghar comes to the army and says to the army

[33:32]okay you don't like me you have a grudge against my father

[33:38]you have jealousy you don't like me what has this child done

[33:45]to you and you have denied it water i'm not asking for

[33:51]anything but this six month old infant has done no harm to

[33:56]you no human being in their moral conscience can deny that truth

[34:02]that a child of any culture any religion any background is innocent

[34:07]so imam is now trying to invoke the hearts of these hard

[34:10]hearted people who have the audacity to hold daggers and spears and

[34:14]swords against the representative of god who in my opinion was the

[34:19]prophet's replica on the battlefield the prophet said so the prophet said

[34:31]he is me hussein ibn ali is me hussein imam is saying

[34:39]okay if you have even forgotten who your prophet is if you've

[34:44]even forgotten the prescriptions of god if you've even forgotten your responsibilities

[34:49]to dare claim to be muslims when you have cornered me to

[34:53]kill me and allah is showing this to me as an example

[34:56]said look don't you think this one should be the most honored

[35:00]don't you think this one should be the most protected don't you

[35:02]think this one should be in the highest palaces don't you think

[35:05]this one should be with carpets flying in the air yet he's

[35:10]in the desert cornered his women are in the tents fire is

[35:15]surrounding the tents that as soon as imam hussain alaihi salam's life

[35:19]is taken they're gonna attack the tent and they're gonna burn it

[35:23]and they're gonna get the women out of there and they're gonna

[35:25]grab them and drag them city to city like slaves you think

[35:29]that's a thought you and i can ever foster in our hands

[35:34]if you and i knew that that's the mission of my life

[35:38]that my children my family is going to be dragged city to

[35:41]city to be humiliated maybe even beheaded and killed could you and

[35:46]i accept such a promise with allah probably not but allah said

[35:52]look at my representative and then when he's taking this child and

[35:56]when he's talking to them sincerely i tell you even a non

[36:01]muslim hard hearted individual even within islam hard hearted individuals when they

[36:09]hear the story of an infant being brought forth as a plead

[36:13]that give this child the water it deserves and instead of it

[36:20]being given water it's responded with an arrow in its neck and

[36:27]they say when the arrow pierced the neck of abdullah and it

[36:34]went into the arm of the blessed imam and he pinched it

[40:50]directors of our islamic institutions because their bank balances are big they

[40:54]don't even pray they don't even fast it doesn't matter they're rich

[40:59]don't we do that subhanallah is this the way of ahlul bayt

[41:04]is this how imam ali was allah in the quran says allah

[41:21]says men who don't bargain for any price men who's allah talking

[41:26]about houses which god has exalted and his name is remembered through

[41:45]those houses allah is talking about ahlul bayt prophets their names are

[41:50]zikr then zikr how did zakaria pray how did yahya pray how

[42:02]did marian pray how did ibrahim do it how did musa do

[42:08]it god is saying why am i telling you this zikr remind

[42:10]you we're reminding you of the moral objectives and if you ever

[42:15]have a problem with it go listen to them that these were

[42:18]the greatest human beings on earth what was their motive what was

[42:21]their modus operandi what did they do did they submit and give

[42:25]up to the wealth and the power that we became slaves and

[42:28]then tomorrow you have people like hitler who was so eloquent in

[42:32]speech that the germans completely voted him in power and the next

[42:36]thing there was chaos and destruction all around the world and then

[42:39]we all sat around 60,000,000 people dead and said oh it was

[42:43]so bad allah says allah doesn't change the affairs of a community

[42:53]until the community changes themselves first allah has given me free will

[42:57]and says to me i put you on this earth and it's

[43:00]a rough sea you pray to me but when you pray don't

[43:03]expect a transaction that the minute you pray i'm going to jump

[43:06]and bring you down an angel to save you no but allah

[43:11]isn't that what prayer is for allah says no prayer is to

[43:15]remind you of your moral conscience don't transact with allah don't say

[43:20]oh allah went to hajj i pray i give charity so now

[43:23]you give me something allah says no i already started it and

[43:27]you can never pay me back i created you when you were

[43:31]nothing and there is nothing in your prayers nor in your fasting

[43:35]nor in your charity that i have to give anything back to

[43:38]you don't transact with allah allah says allah says i'll give you

[43:43]as and when i will i am merciful but i may leave

[43:47]you thirsty hungry to die and i'm gonna ask you do you

[43:52]love me or don't you many of us say no love we

[43:56]don't love you because you're rich you're powerful you better give me

[43:59]what i want this is the difference we commemorate these events to

[44:05]learn a lesson that while we have our problems in life don't

[44:09]lose faith in god and don't submit to people of power who

[44:14]don't have good morals submit to high moral standing people people who

[44:20]don't lie people who don't cheat people who have a vision people

[44:24]who are consistently trying to promote good follow those kinds of people

[44:28]and don't be sold for a cheap price when we do they

[44:33]will come and kill us it's exactly what happened with the banu

[44:36]ma'iah people submitted to muawiyah look at the treachery that took place

[44:40]people submitted to banu abbasid look at the hell that took place

[44:43]it continued with the uthmaniyah you find even today people are trying

[44:47]to claim to be khalifas of our time today look what they're

[44:49]doing they're butchering beheading people educated in western worlds are getting on

[44:54]planes and dressing up in armaments in army clothes and going to

[44:59]decapitate and kill people this to me is amazing i said how

[45:04]can educated people do that it shows when there's lack of vision

[45:08]for akhirah to meet allah the one who says i want to

[45:15]meet my lord and the problem is we forgot who allah is

[45:18]allah is the absolute good when you and i have a desire

[45:23]to meet him it means you and i will be good on

[45:25]this earth we won't cheat we won't lie we won't backbite we

[45:28]won't fault find we will not be dishonest and we will not

[45:32]be arrogant and show off and we will not be self centered

[45:35]aggrandizing people we become humble this is why salah is there we

[45:40]put our hands up and say allahu akbar this moment is taken

[45:44]for granted we just raise our hands allah says you forgot be

[45:48]humble please don't you see iblis worshiped me for thousands of years

[45:54]he lost his humbleness when he became so powerful in his status

[45:58]and i destroyed him because he was arrogant you think you will

[46:01]be different on judgment day imam hussein was not arrogant humble but

[46:06]firm firm right you find that muhammad and those who are with

[46:19]him they are firm against disbelief firm in what way beheading shooting

[46:27]no firm in the sense that we do not bargain immorality for

[46:33]any price people say listen i give you money we promote some

[46:39]immorality promote some alcohol cheat lie sell some drugs on the streets

[46:46]destroy the community we do not promote that secret agency comes and

[46:51]says spy for us so that we can come and destroy members

[46:54]of your community you do not bargain for their prices i'm sorry

[46:59]well we'll put you in prison that's fine but i will not

[47:02]take anybody else with prison in prison with me i will suffer

[47:06]but i'm not gonna take anyone else this is what quran says

[47:09]men who do not bargain for any price but the quran continues

[47:15]to say they maintain prayer and they maintain charity here prayer is

[47:23]not only the five daily prayers prayer also is speaking the truth

[47:28]not lying being honest being modest being giving being forgiving loving caring

[47:34]sharing all these characteristics are within the principles of salah within the

[47:38]minute i pray then i'm done no prayer was the reenactment you

[47:43]actually vowed to do what you will do after you finish prayer

[47:48]prayer is a vow on what you will do when you're done

[47:52]or we forget that part we say i prayed now let me

[47:55]go back to my satanic ways no you just said you will

[47:59]do it and actually as great scholars have said prayer begins when

[48:04]it ends so we have an obligation my brothers and sisters to

[48:08]see that in this night of ashur the nights of ashura let's

[48:13]not take this religion cyclical say why am i here i'm here

[48:17]for the zikr let me explain the zikr muhammad wa al muhammad

[48:26]i my time is almost up so i wanna try to encapsulate

[48:32]this quickly duke university i'm gonna give you a quick example i

[48:40]on this humans lie as you know and one of the worst

[48:45]things we do is when we lie because a lie is something

[48:48]that doesn't exist and when we fabricate something that doesn't exist it

[48:52]confuses us that's why a lie is detested and the irony about

[48:58]lying is that the what we call pathological liar one who lies

[49:03]all the time hates to be lied to because if you lied

[49:07]all the time you should love to be lied to but it's

[49:09]it's evil that's why they don't like it it's like when you

[49:11]backbite it's an evil act because the backbiter doesn't like to be

[49:16]backbit the arrogant doesn't like another arrogant it's interesting right do you

[49:22]notice that allah has built a fixed system of truth where if

[49:25]you want to know where truth lies see the ugliness of it

[49:28]to the very one who practices it they hate it when it's

[49:31]done to them when you hit someone you cause pain the person

[49:34]who hit hates to be hit so allah says stop stop doing

[49:39]that the only time you're allowed to hit is when somebody hits

[49:42]you and you cannot stop them then strike for a strike otherwise

[49:46]it's forbidden in islam so we humans lie and this lying leads

[49:52]at all levels if you find apathy in religion it's because politicians

[49:56]people society lies when we lie we destroy the moral fabric so

[50:03]duke university did a research and they wanted to figure out why

[50:08]humans lie so they did a research at the university they brought

[50:11]a group of students and told them to take an exam and

[50:14]they told them for 10 questions for every right question we'll give

[50:17]you a dollar so the students came in took the exam and

[50:22]they were told you will grade yourself so they took the exam

[50:27]they graded themselves then they come to the front and there's a

[50:31]shredder you take the exam and you shred it then you go

[50:34]to the desk and say i got five answers right so i

[50:37]give you $5 interesting right they found out that the students who

[50:44]did that almost everybody cheated but if they got four right they

[50:50]say they got five right or six right one or two more

[50:54]it's halal technically can argue to god didn't understand it it's like

[51:03]you nudge the rules a little bit make it a little halal

[51:07]to the makrut side from haram to makrut maybe can deal with

[51:11]god they forgot was that the shredder was rigged it was only

[51:19]shredding the edge of the exam so they took the exams out

[51:23]and noticed that everybody cheated everybody added one or two then they

[51:28]wanted to add more value to that they brought a student who

[51:32]was part of the team and the second exam came in this

[51:35]student in about a minute or so it takes at least thirty

[51:39]minutes to take the exam in a minute or so stood up

[51:43]and says i did it takes it shreds it goes i got

[51:46]all right answers and you got $10 so the rest of the

[51:49]student says hey there's no way you can pass this exam this

[51:53]guy cheated 100% and look he went up there he collected the

[51:57]money he walked out and he got the $10 so it became

[52:02]halal so everybody did it everybody stood up yep 10 10 they

[52:09]all collected $10 it's amazing when one person or a group of

[52:13]people commit a sin how it legitimizes and probably becomes mustahab everybody

[52:20]in town is drinking everybody in town like the youth say everybody's

[52:24]smoking weed brother what are you talking about it's halal in fact

[52:28]it could've been maybe even because everybody does it brother everybody i

[52:37]said does it make it right well brother you know i'm no

[52:39]longer sinful because it's the norm you know they all drink see

[52:43]that's the problem of the human social system when you and i

[52:46]are living in a society where evil becomes prevalent it becomes part

[52:50]of the status quo our our sisters are removing hijab today everybody's

[52:55]removing their hijab these days you know it's become very popular now

[52:57]it's it's chic be careful of these rules and regulations that you

[53:03]and i follow with others when i commit a crime i feel

[53:06]very lonely but the more i can get you to commit a

[53:11]crime the less lonely i feel and the more justified i feel

[53:14]if i'm caught it's not me it's all of us it's not

[53:18]that bad you see so what we call negative peer pressure why

[53:23]do friends ask friends to smoke why do friends ask friends to

[53:26]drink because they wanna share the sin in fact when you drink

[53:30]alcohol and smoke you pay a sin tax it's amazing in america

[53:36]there's a tax it's called sin tax it's amazing even america which

[53:40]doesn't promote god necessarily knows that in its essence it's sinful so

[53:47]what they did was they gave this exam everybody cheated so they

[53:50]said okay how do we stop this we figured out something some

[53:55]movement here what happened is that they took did another exam but

[54:02]before they gave this other exam they told all the students to

[54:06]write the 10 commandments so they told them tell us what the

[54:11]10 commandments are thou shall not kill thou shall not lie you

[54:14]know thou shall not commit adultery most of them didn't know more

[54:17]than three or four you know thou shall not chew gum whatever

[54:20]they didn't know didn't matter the and they were not all christians

[54:25]it was a mixture of christians atheists muslims didn't matter 10 commandments

[54:29]because everybody universally knows 10 commandments came to moses whatever and it

[54:34]had a moral prescription had a moral prescription don't forget that piece

[54:42]so they took this then they took the exams i mean this

[54:46]10 commandment question told them all to go into a room and

[54:49]take the exam again you know the same one that they did

[54:51]in this is a different group by the way and none of

[54:55]them cheated everybody told exactly the right answers they got and they

[55:00]collected the money and they were stunned by this behavior then why

[55:05]nobody cheated what had happened was that before the exam the zikr

[55:11]the conscience was ignited the inner conscious of morality was ignited temporarily

[55:17]and the minute you become ignited temporarily your chances of lying and

[55:22]cheating is reduced that's why in court it's very amazing that before

[55:26]you go up to the stand you put your right hand up

[55:29]and you put your hand on the bible it could even be

[55:31]a piece of wood i swear that i will speak nothing but

[55:35]the minute you take an oath somehow your conscience is triggered and

[55:40]the minute it's triggered it's harder for you to lie subhanallah now

[55:44]the quran is a zikr cover to cover it's a zikr to

[55:48]remind us remind them reminding is beneficial it's good for them we

[56:01]ask the question why is god repeating the quran which of my

[56:06]bounties will you be lie me for 33 times 31 times actually

[56:10]allah repeats it we say why is god repeating allah says i'm

[56:13]reminding you i'm reminding you we say why are you reminding me

[56:16]allah says your conscience if it's not reminded you will lose focus

[56:19]of your life you will become an ignorant arrogant human being even

[56:24]scientists in universities have recognized that the minute you remind people of

[56:28]consciousness good consciousness you just naturally commit less sins now when we

[56:33]remember ahlul bayt when we pray when we fast when we go

[56:36]to hajj don't you think it's the highest form of living in

[56:39]the world for we are reminding our consciousness that we are not

[56:43]going to commit a sin sure we commit sins but we'll be

[56:46]committing much less and inshallah we'll eradicate it this is why this

[56:50]remembrance is so important brothers and sisters and when we go to

[56:53]karbala imam as he's going into the palace of yazid people are

[57:00]seeing them chained that while the imam is standing outside see imam

[57:06]going to karbala was a reminder his massacre is a reminder our

[57:12]remembrance of his massacre is a reminder our crying is a reminder

[57:17]our desire to be with the imam is a reminder our love

[57:21]for is a reminder brothers and sisters tell me on earth who

[57:25]has the best moral conscious reminding system on earth other than us

[57:32]imam zayl abideen i'll discuss it tomorrow further my time is up

[57:40]but let me explain just briefly as you know he's in the

[57:44]palace of yazid quick history i conclude you find that when mu'abih

[57:50]became the governor of syria as you know his brother was the

[57:58]governor before when he became governor it was a christian world that

[58:03]peace byzantium was the christian land when muawi became governor he basically

[58:09]gave the islamic vision through his eyes to his people and it

[58:13]was such a convoluted islam the muawiyah style of islam that it

[58:18]had venomous hatred for ahlul bayt and actually even for the prophet

[58:24]muawiyah used to dislike the prophet he didn't like him his father

[58:27]didn't like him fought the prophet all his life let's not be

[58:30]fooled the hatred he had is in the annals of history the

[58:35]muslims of syria of that time believed that al al bayt were

[58:39]not an important part of islam whereas allah subhanahu wa ta'ala clearly

[58:43]mentions al al bayt as a fundamental principle within the prescription of

[58:46]islam as the protectors of the religion so to make a long

[58:50]story short muawiyah had concocted ideas within its people that al al

[58:55]bayt were actually bad people in fact he had told the people

[59:00]that ali didn't even pray he was such a bad person and

[59:03]you see the remnants of it in the hadith books today where

[59:05]they tried to belittle our blessed imam when he's the brother of

[59:09]the prophet he's the reflection of the prophet but yet you find

[59:12]in the annals of history today imam is given a lower status

[59:16]because of the jealousy of the bani ummayyah imam is reaching now

[59:21]this city which has been completely misinformed that when imam i'll give

[59:27]you an example when imam became martyred when he was struck in

[59:30]the masjid in sujud the syrians said ali ibn abid ali prayed

[59:37]they believed he didn't pray so how could he be killed in

[59:40]prayer this is how convoluted their mind was now how do you

[59:44]go and change that stat you have to go on a battlefield

[59:47]imam says you have to expose it you have to leave that

[59:51]for the annals of history for the human race to have remembrance

[59:54]forever so that they are morally conscious forever to understand to rise

[59:59]for freedom and to never allow bigots and to be never allow

[60:03]wretched leaders to rule the world and never to allow immorality to

[60:08]be the moral fabric of our society the immoral fabric of society

[60:13]as a result you find imam zain la abideen when he enters

[60:16]the city people were clapping there were all kinds of merrymaking chocolates

[60:21]until today by the way in some muslim countries on ashura night

[60:24]chocolates are distributed because it's a celebration that they inherited historically so

[60:30]imam zainul abidin is standing there a man comes to him he

[60:33]said it's good that our khalifa killed your father now the imam

[60:38]looks at this old man he was a good man but misinformed

[60:42]like many people in the world today this is very important brothers

[60:45]and sisters quick side note sunni shia dialogue unity we're one community

[60:52]brothers and sisters remember that the world is misinformed disinformed but look

[60:57]how blessed imam goes to him the man is now poking at

[61:00]the imam saying to him it's good that our khalifa killed your

[61:04]father for being a refractory meaning he challenged our khalifa look how

[61:09]imam imam do not turn around and call him a kafir imam

[61:12]not turn around and condemn him imam do not send lana to

[61:15]him imam said to him have you read the quran he said

[61:21]yes i have read the quran he asks him have you read

[61:25]the ayah qullah he said i have read that he said who

[61:31]are the qurba according to you he didn't know the imam says

[61:36]we are the qurba there is no other qurba i am his

[61:39]grandson i'm the grandson of the prophet there is no qurba other

[61:43]than us there is no qurba other than my father who else

[61:46]is the whole qurbah imam says have you read in allah you

[61:52]read allah al ibn qumaritz ahlul bayt he said yes he says

[61:56]who's ahlul bayt so as the imam is exposing this this man

[62:03]starts to tear he starts to realize oh my god what have

[62:08]we done we have actually killed the prophet and we have been

[62:13]duped and fooled and he starts to cry and he puts his

[62:18]head on the ground and says yabna rasulillah forgive me please forgive

[62:22]me forgive me for i have done a great disservice to you

[62:26]the imam says it's okay rise and tell the truth to the

[62:30]world spread this so the imam now has the opportunity to uncover

[62:35]the lies that have been perpetrated and to expose the truth to

[62:40]the people of syria because that's the intention of the deen of

[62:45]islam my brothers and sisters tonight i end on this event tonight

[62:50]as you know is technically the arabain night and i'll talk about

[62:54]the fortieth tomorrow more because time is up but just that the

[62:59]imam is freed from prison he returns to karbala he buries the

[63:07]head of imam then they return to medina we'll continue this conversation
