[0:00]the purpose of today's program is we're going to try to keep
[0:04]this as informal as possible I'm by no means an expert in
[0:07]anything that we're going to be talking about today I'm not a
[0:10]lecturer either so just going to try to keep this as informal
[0:13]as possible uh you know discussions questions uh give our own experiences
[0:18]if you have something some kind of experience that you would like
[0:21]to share that would be uh definitely welcomed at the end of
[0:27]the program inam muhamad so the topic of today is striking a
[0:37]balance between uh faith and uh career I've spoken on this subject
[0:44]before um just from a personal experience alhamdulillah uh we have the
[0:54]opportunity uh in this country to uh pursue uh higher education and
[0:58]uh pursue careers uh that'll allow us to uh be successful and
[1:02]integrate into uh this uh great community and give back to the
[1:11]community that provided for us uh you know a little background for
[1:14]me I grew up in Bloomington Indiana I lived in uh Queens
[1:18]New York for 5 years I moved here for uh my undergrad
[1:23]uh um at yoga Dearborn back in 1999 that's when I moved
[1:30]here uh and then I worked for about 4 years and then
[1:32]eventually alhamdulillah got accepted into medical school and then went to medical
[1:37]school for 4 years and then residency for 4 years and now
[1:42]I've been done for a couple years [Music] alhamdulillah you can see
[1:49]that from the history of Islam Allah and the prophet emphasized education
[1:55]that even if it seek knowledge even if it's you even if
[2:01]you have to go to China or from the day you were
[2:07]born until you're about to die you always looking seeking education and
[2:10]you think about it like China that's not that's not you know
[2:14]it's a a flight away but at that time when the Quran
[2:19]was revealed to Prophet Muhammad Al that's a long long travel to
[2:26]go to China so the emphasis on seeking education is very important
[2:34]in Islam and there there are a couple of instances I remember
[2:38]uh especially when I was in medical school doing uh Anatomy when
[2:42]you talk about strengthening a balance between faith and career I was
[2:47]in the anatomy lab and you have the bodies open there and
[2:52]you look at the anatomy and you say Subhan the Creator what
[2:57]has he created and you think how can somebody an atheist you
[3:01]don't even need to know anything about religion you look open up
[3:03]this body you look at there's a a nerve and I always
[3:07]use use this example so so for those who have heard it
[3:12]please excuse me there's a nerve called the recurrent lenial nerve it's
[3:16]a nerve that goes down and then curves back up to insert
[3:19]into your vocal cord so that you can speak now you would
[3:24]say why would a nerve pass where it needed to go and
[3:27]then come back up and reattach but that's occurs in 99% of
[3:34]the people there's always variations and so but that occurs in majority
[3:38]of people so why is that you'll find that as a Muslim
[3:46]growing up in this community you try to incorporate your faith in
[3:51]everything that you do and so when you encounter things like this
[3:57]you use that to make your faith stronger another aspect that I
[4:04]have spoken about before that I think is very important is in
[4:07]this in this day and age in this community especially uh right
[4:12]now we're here we're very grateful to uh wise for allowing us
[4:16]to use this facility but we need a place of our own
[4:19]and we think about this we like okay I want to go
[4:23]to Haj I want to go to Zara I want to contribute
[4:28]to um orphans I want to contribute to a mosque I want
[4:34]to take care of my parents we have projects that we need
[4:36]to uh take care I I I work in the medical field
[4:42]and I see nursing homes are not ideal conditions for our parents
[4:47]I I would think our religion our faith would not allow us
[4:52]to put our parents in such a situation but if we had
[4:54]an Islamic nursing home where people actually feared God and took care
[5:01]of the elderly in our community imagine the impact that that would
[5:08]have for us as our dear say always emphasizes is let's not
[5:12]invest in those who are dead a lot of people worry about
[5:17]um funeral homes and stuff like that let's not in invest in
[5:20]those let's invest in the people who are alive in our youth
[5:25]cuz that's what's going to be our future in this community and
[5:28]this in this world so I highly highly recommend that we all
[5:32]aspire to go to to do excel in our education so that
[5:40]we can go into prestigious careers and we need people in all
[5:47]different careers in every kind of aspect if we can the reason
[5:51]certain factions are so successful uh in their communities is because they
[5:55]have infiltrated every single aspect that exists in this country they control
[6:01]economics they control medicine they control law they control many many many
[6:06]other things we have the potential Subhan Allah and our community is
[6:11]very rich they have a lot and I'm not saying rich just
[6:14]monetarily rich in their uh faith in their background in their money
[6:21]and that's what our community needs we cannot accomplish all these projects
[6:25]if our community does not have money our parents and our grandparents
[6:29]into this country because they wanted a better future for all of
[6:34]us and it starts from all you young guys that are sitting
[6:37]here hopefully you guys are are listening and paying attention that you
[6:42]are the future of us you are going to be taking care
[6:45]of us when we're older when I'm walking on a cane I'm
[6:48]going to be looking up and you're going to be taking care
[6:51]of me right yeah okay so I I urge all of you
[6:58]and I've always offer offer this to anybody if anybody wants to
[7:02]go into medicine and alhamdulillah we have people in all sorts of
[7:05]we have our dear brother here who's in law if anybody who
[7:07]has any kind of uh questions regarding a certain career path that
[7:14]you want to take or you want to uh uh take on
[7:18]please feel free to ask I'm more than happy to help more
[7:21]than happy to lead you in the right direction um and um
[7:26]we we have many many resources and insh once we're able to
[7:31]find an official building we'll have offices that are available for careers
[7:36]uh career building um you know uh and as a side note
[7:45]uh in NYC has its own building or own office uh definitely
[7:49]helping and volunteering and being involved in organizations can definitely help boost
[7:56]your resume and uh you know people are always looking for loged
[8:00]hours and stuff like that so take advantage that's I I believe
[8:04]that that helped me get into medical school I got a letter
[8:07]from uh what was the y in the past of all the
[8:11]hours that we uh uh volunteered to help and that helps boost
[8:15]up your resume it definitely does so please if you are somebody
[8:21]who wants to help be involved please uh you know approach any
[8:24]one of the brothers or sisters let them know ask them hey
[8:27]I want to get involved this is what I'm good at this
[8:29]is what I know how do we used to have a magazine
[8:32]we don't have that anymore people who love to write people who
[8:35]uh want to share certain experiences stuff like that please try to
[8:40]be involved uh try to tell your friends to be involved we'd
[8:45]love to see this hallway filled uh with beautiful faces and uh
[8:50]inshallah we'll uh open up the discussion after our dear sisters here
[8:55]are done with their peace uh please feel free to ask any
[9:00]questions and inallah hopefully we can lead you in the right direction
[9:11]Alum everyone um before I begin speaking I just want to let
[9:17]you know that sister will be passing her on note cards and
[9:19]pens if anybody has any questions or there's anything that you want
[9:22]to share feel free or if you're comfortable raising your hand go
[9:27]right ahead as we said a very informal setting and we want
[9:29]everybody to be so if you're comfortable just standing up and speaking
[9:32]go ahead um there will also be a little graffle we have
[9:40]little treats and stuff so if you ask questions and you write
[9:42]your name on the back we'll P you for one of the
[9:46]little treats we have all righty so salum again my name is
[9:51]j mlin and I'm a senior at way State University and I
[9:54]am an accounting ma honors accounting major in the business school um
[9:57]one of the biggest things I often here is you're in business
[10:02]what are you doing business for what are you planning to do
[10:04]with that you're going to own a business no that's that's not
[10:08]what I'm doing um since I've been a freshman I've been trying
[10:11]to get in with a big four accounting firm which is you
[10:15]know it's generally speaking Corporate America so when I explain to people
[10:19]that that's the route I'm taking I also get a lot of
[10:20]push back there that why are you subjecting yourself to that you
[10:25]know our perception in the media right now you know what people
[10:28]think of us why is a young Muslim girl going to put
[10:33]herself in that position well it's exactly because of the appearance we
[10:36]have in the media right now that I do want to put
[10:37]myself in that position Mah we have and I've seen in this
[10:43]community alone a wide range of talents and I think they're not
[10:46]being pursued and I think we need to be putting ourselves out
[10:50]there now sisters have it harder and easier at the same time
[10:53]with spreading The Message of Islam the hij in and of itself
[10:58]is proof of our identity as Muslims not to say that you
[11:00]Brothers I'm sure to undergo your own struggles but wherever I go
[11:06]everybody instinctively knows I'm Muslim that's not something I can hide and
[11:10]it's not something I want to hide so instead I decided to
[11:12]use it as an opportunity to put myself in situations and put
[11:16]myself in positions where I'm comfortable speaking I'm comfortable in my faith
[11:20]and I'm comfortable talking about my religion so often times when I'm
[11:26]asked you know what what's with that hat around your head why
[11:29]why can't I hug you why can't I shake your hand it's
[11:33]it's situations like that when you get to demonstrate the importance of
[11:37]your religion and you have to be conscious as well when I'm
[11:40]out there and I'm wearing my hijab I'm a representation of My
[11:43]Religion everywhere I go everything I say traces directly back to Islam
[11:51]if I don't want something being perpetuated I have to be conscious
[11:54]to not to put that out there myself so that's something that's
[11:57]always in the back of my mind is what do I want
[12:00]people to think about Islam what do I want people to think
[12:02]about Muslims and that's something to carry on so in business school
[12:07]it's definitely been a little bit of a struggle um I went
[12:10]to Dearborn High where a good portion of the students were Muslim
[12:13]or Arab and you know it wasn't extremely diverse and I'm in
[12:19]a class now where not only am I the only I'm the
[12:21]only Arab in the entire class so that's something new and that's
[12:24]something to get used to as well but it definitely provides an
[12:28]opportunity and I urge you guys to not shy away from situations
[12:31]like that try to take a step outside your comfort zone it's
[12:35]easy to stay with what you're comfortable with it's easy to stay
[12:37]with what you're good with but you should pursue different things and
[12:40]put yourself in situations where you can Branch out you can make
[12:44]a name for yourself and you can make a name for notam
[12:46]and to all the youth in the audience right now I know
[12:49]you guys are thinking what does this have to do with me
[12:51]I'm not in high school yet but College every generation is getting
[12:55]smarter you guys are going to be far far smarter than I
[12:59]am by the time you're my age you're learning at an accelerated
[13:02]rate so this is going to be your future this is going
[13:07]to be your opportunity to spread Islam and you're going to get
[13:11]to control it so I know you think it's a little early
[13:12]but it's okay to start thinking about that from now what am
[13:16]I going to do how am I going to represent My Religion
[13:19]what can I do thank you guys my name is um andhd
[13:33]I'm a recent graduate of Eastern University um I graduated with an
[13:38]art major and a minor in biology inah I'm applying to K
[13:42]school this summer and keep your fingers crossed hopefully I hear good
[13:47]news by the end of the summer um very similar to exactly
[13:49]what J was talking about um wearing the hijab I'm always going
[13:54]to be a representative no matter where I am or what situation
[13:56]I'm in so I have to be conscious of that what's going
[14:01]on um as a student being an art major I was one
[14:04]of the few out of Art majors and one of the few
[14:07]wearing hijab and um I took advantage of that whenever there was
[14:11]projects that I got to pick and choose what I was going
[14:14]to do I chose to do projects about Islam I chose to
[14:18]do something that was meaningful to me because I feel like um
[14:22]through ART I was able to show Islam in a different way
[14:24]and then because of how the program works when we would have
[14:29]critiques with the class I the class was forced to discuss my
[14:31]project forced to talk about Slam in a different way to where
[14:35]they normally wouldn't have to so I completely took advantage of it
[14:38]and I loved it it was really great to be able to
[14:40]do that um I brought one of my pieces with me actually
[14:44]um the project was that we had to do something about time
[14:48]and it was something that we were supposed to do the whole
[14:50]semester long something every day to show the progression of time from
[14:54]the beginning of the semester to the end of the semester and
[14:57]the teacher said do something you do every day and find a
[15:00]way to do that like incorporate that in your project and I'm
[15:02]like what do I do every day I pray I pray five
[15:05]times a day so I um got a board and I made
[15:10]like a charcoal paper and then a blank piece of paper to
[15:14]where it was like a transfer type of paper I connected it
[15:16]all to my board and I prayed on it every single day
[15:19]for the whole semester and that's what it looked like at the
[15:22]end of the semester and at come to of that it got
[15:25]um put in the student show at Eastern Michigan University and I
[15:28]was like so proud of it and even when I brought it
[15:31]into my class with my intention of it showing the humbleness of
[15:34]Islam the peacefulness of Islam what it actually means to pray every
[15:37]day and that was my intention with it I brought it into
[15:41]class and my teacher immediately went crazy over it and he said
[15:44]oh my gosh he's like I could just see the humbleness in
[15:48]this I could just see the actual Dedication that you're praying every
[15:51]day and he was going on and on and on I didn't
[15:54]have to say anything I didn't have to do anything my teacher
[15:57]went ahead with it and he was so into it so happy
[16:00]about it and he was the one that actually put it in
[16:01]the student show so then when it came time for the show
[16:05]and I was so excited like all my family and everyone went
[16:09]and walking into it I overheard a conversation about my peace and
[16:13]one of the girls was like showing around someone that um like
[16:16]through the gallery and she was telling her like this is one
[16:18]of the most beautiful pieces like in here and explaining to her
[16:23]how mosts pray five times a day and this is what I
[16:24]was doing and this is what I was trying to show to
[16:28]where other people had to represent Islam like through my pce like
[16:31]it was the most amazing moment like ever and I'll like never
[16:35]forget it not even to like post about myself but just like
[16:37]that a project like that can like change other people's perceptions of
[16:43]Islam is just like such a humbling experience it was like so
[16:46]great for me but even through other pieces like students were forced
[16:49]to talk about it and forced to talk about like this isn't
[16:53]how women in hijab are this isn't how Muslim women are to
[16:55]be representative it like it's a big Challenge and it's a big
[16:59]responsibility but I always was like so proud to have that and
[17:04]to take that on and then um even with my work I've
[17:07]been a flomist for 5 years which is like drawing blood I
[17:10]work at Oakwood Hospital right now and even with my patient interactions
[17:13]I have to be aware of like how I'm being perceived how
[17:18]I'm talking to these patients even if it's a rude patient even
[17:20]if it's a horrible situation I always have to be the bigger
[17:23]person I always have to be extra polite or extra nice because
[17:28]my actions are straight reflection of a SL no matter what I
[17:31]do and then um even before when I worked at the hospital
[17:35]I did um traveling quoty for a few for like a year
[17:38]and I was driving everywhere I would go like from Flint to
[17:43]Wall Lake to RiverGate to Southgate like all these different cities to
[17:47]where they don't have many interactions with Muslims or anything like any
[17:52]other minority for that like at all so I was nervous about
[17:56]that of I'm going to have to go to all these different
[17:58]cities and work with these patients in nursing homes and what if
[18:02]they take me the wrong way or I didn't know what was
[18:04]going to happen and um it was funny most of the time
[18:08]they thought I was a nun going around to draw blood but
[18:09]even with that I was always really polite with them I was
[18:13]always nice I always did the best that I could be because
[18:15]I knew that my actions with those patients that interaction was going
[18:19]to probably be one of the few interactions they would have with
[18:23]the Muslim so I made sure to do it to my best
[18:24]ability and to make sure that I was always being the best
[18:28]I could be like not only for my job but because I'm
[18:31]here to serve Allah that's the main goal of our careers of
[18:33]our schooling of anything to make sure that I'm doing the right
[18:35]thing for the right reason and it it totally translates to the
[18:41]patients and the people you're interacting with that that's the perception they're
[18:44]going to have of this slam wherever you wherever you are so
[18:47]I think girls do have it sometimes easier to where we don't
[18:51]have to always say things they know it by our actions but
[18:53]even with the boys like you have the opportunity to do that
[18:58]too and I think no matter what career or what field you
[19:01]are in school whatever it is like you just always have to
[19:04]do it like think to yourself you're doing this to serve Allah
[19:06]and try to be that good Representative no matter what situation you're
[19:10]going to be in even if they don't know you're Muslim even
[19:13]if you're a girl not wearing hijab you just always have to
[19:15]like have that standard for yourself get some questions anybody else have
[19:37]any questions so the first question is where your pressure by non-muslim
[19:53]students to do thing against your religion are you pressured by non-muslim
[19:58]stud students to go against your religion I can speak to that
[20:02]so one of the things with me trying to get into the
[20:07]companies I'm going into is a lot of times they have after
[20:12]you know whatever meeting or um session is going on will go
[20:15]out to eat or they sometimes want to go to the bar
[20:19]and I have to explain to them no you know that's that's
[20:21]not a situation I'm comfortable with and most of the time they
[20:24]like oh oh you just you don't drink and it's like no
[20:27]you know it's a part of my religion it's it's about providing
[20:30]a learning opportunity there are going to be many instances for you
[20:34]all as there have been for myself we're going to be pressured
[20:36]by those around you to do things that go against your Dean
[20:40]you have to be strong enough in your faith to say I'm
[20:42]not going to conform to this and everything you do you have
[20:46]to be yourself is this something I would do on a regular
[20:48]basis is this something that I would want someone from my city
[20:53]seeing me doing if the answer is no then maybe you shouldn't
[20:55]be doing it and sometimes it's harder to say no but but
[20:59]there is always a way and there's always a way to turn
[21:01]it into a lesson to and teach someone to teach someone about
[21:06]your religion why we don't drink why it isn't you know healthy
[21:08]for us you know I prefer to not be in that state
[21:12]of mind there are other ways I wish you know to deal
[21:14]with situations so there are often opportunities to avoid these situations and
[21:20]it helps to have a friend and it helps to establish yourself
[21:24]beforehand why you don't do some of these certain things hope that
[21:28]answered your question so it's funny you think uh in medical school
[21:35]um uh students uh practicing medicine or trying to practice or learn
[21:40]medicine are a little bit more aware of these situations but uh
[21:45]our exams were always on a Monday uh morning uh so I
[21:51]you know I lived in Lancing um and I drive back to
[21:56]Lancing Sunday night and then uh take my test Monday morning morning
[22:00]guess where everybody went Monday night so everybody would I mean these
[22:05]are all medical students practicing medicine they they see uh what their
[22:12]uh actions uh you know can can do and they go out
[22:17]every Monday night and they go to the bar and they get
[22:19]drunk and they do dum things um they of course they would
[22:28]always expect or ask everybody to to show up but they they
[22:31]knew who not to ask um but you can use that there
[22:37]were other I had other Muslim friends and we you know did
[22:39]our own thing we went out and had dinner at a restaurant
[22:43]we went and um they'll make fun of me went to the
[22:47]arcades and you know played some games and stuff like that so
[22:50]you know and I've I've always uh you know bring up that
[22:55]point you don't I don't have to drink to to have a
[22:57]good time and uh you ask people who are drunk if they
[23:03]remember what how much F they had so you know I I
[23:07]use that as a joke but you know it it brings out
[23:11]a point so um I would definitely um say that yeah the
[23:14]Temptations are there but you have the opportunity to uh make something
[23:20]better out of that situation thank you so much those are both
[23:24]amazing replies this question is actually to you and question is how
[23:30]did you manage to stay involved in the community work and family
[23:33]while in medical school that's a good question um so uh alhamdulillah
[23:42]my parents made uh Islam uh a very uh important part of
[23:49]my life uh when we moved to uh New York from Indiana
[23:51]we moved to uh pretty much on the same block as the
[23:57]Islamic Center uh there um and you know we were at the
[23:59]mosque essentially every day so when we you know moved to uh
[24:06]Dearborn I always knew that there was the Muslim and Arab Community
[24:09]here in deor I definitely wanted to uh be a part of
[24:14]that and we we met IM Hass Kini so we we stayed
[24:16]involved with that I was part of the Y when it first
[24:20]started and uh it was just part of my life uh and
[24:26]then alhamdulillah you know I was able to meet my wife uh
[24:29]through the through the youth program um and that was another point
[24:35]that I forgot to mention when I was uh speaking was it
[24:39]was definitely a blessing to uh be uh married during the that
[24:48]part of uh my my life because uh it uh kept me
[24:53]away from all the distractions that were there during in a in
[24:56]a college atmosphere in a college campus there are many temptations there
[25:00]and many distractions but alhamdulillah being married definitely helped that situation uh
[25:04]and because it was already part of my life you know when
[25:08]you grow up uh there's certain things you don't do and you're
[25:11]like I don't want to do it because I don't want my
[25:14]dad to see me doing it but I mean essentially it's it's
[25:16]a it's a second level there you don't want the real reason
[25:19]you're not doing it is because you don't want to displease Allah
[25:21]subhana wa tala and if you displease your parents you're displeasing Allah
[25:25]subhana tala so because that was such a interval part of my
[25:29]life uh I you know I make time I mean it's it's
[25:33]something that you have to do make a conscious effort uh to
[25:38]be able to do it it's not easy but if it's part
[25:41]of your life and part of your priority you can make it
[25:43]happen um you know you may not be able to make it
[25:47]to every Friday night program but when you have the opportunity go
[25:50]ahead and try make a point to make it um and if
[25:55]you if you try to stay involved uh definitely that will help
[25:58]help you like I said being involved you can uh boost up
[26:02]your resume at the same time as long as you keep your
[26:04]faith and faith is part of you when you are out there
[26:10]and alone uh those distractions don't really tempt you anymore because you
[26:15]know you have your faith and your family and allaha and your
[26:18]brothers and sisters in your community thank you you said resume so
[26:25]I just remembered I wanted to say too if anybody is current
[26:27]work on a resum who needs any help with anything along those
[26:31]lines that's something I can definitely help with and feel free to
[26:35]approach me after the program I can definitely help with that thank
[26:38]you well the third question is actually from me and how do
[26:45]you guys deal with the bigot and the ignorance in your fields
[26:48]and in your Majors for example with h have you had any
[26:54]maybe patients that haven't didn't want to be healed by you may
[26:57]have any Arts I didn't want to talk to necessarily or any
[27:03]um accounting stuff I don't know um I remember one time I
[27:12]had a patient asked me um like he saw I was R
[27:13]scarf I was there to draw his blood and the first thing
[27:17]he told me was so are you sh or sun and I'm
[27:21]like oh my God and I was just like what like and
[27:25]I know I knew that he didn't know much about it that
[27:27]he was just ask like make a point and I was just
[27:30]like oh my gosh like why would you even ask that thinking
[27:33]to myself and then I just told him you know it doesn't
[27:35]matter what you are we're both the sisters and brothers of Islam
[27:37]and we're both for the same religion and that's all that really
[27:41]matters and I kind of just shut down the question like right
[27:43]then and there and um just situations like that where you kind
[27:49]of have to be the bigger person and talk your way out
[27:50]of it or like just to avoid it because that's not an
[27:55]appropriate question to ask I had a patient before too um try
[27:58]to convert me to Christianity as I was drawing her blood so
[28:03]that was very interesting um and I just had to explain to
[28:05]her like kindly you know like everyone has their own faith everyone
[28:08]has what they believe in and what makes sense to them and
[28:13]um I'm very comfortable with my so I'm okay but she just
[28:15]really felt the need to tell me that I need to accept
[28:19]Jesus Christ into my life and I said I accept him as
[28:22]a prophet and we're all good we're all friends so it was
[28:24]really hard but you sometimes you're just in those uncomfortable situ situations
[28:29]and you just have to be knowledgeable and know your faith know
[28:32]how to answer those questions and know how to be the bigger
[28:34]person and answer them in the most respectful way that you can
[28:39]so you're not offending the other person even when they are offending
[28:43]you um I think probably the funniest thing that's happened to me
[28:48]and this has actually happened I want to say maybe four or
[28:51]five times um every time I'm going in for an interview and
[28:56]sometimes they'll have you out in the lobby and then they'll come
[28:57]out out and they'll be like they'll say your name so they'll
[29:02]go Jenna mackid and I stand up and then they have to
[29:03]do a second look at their paper and then they'll look back
[29:06]at me and look back at the paper like that name match
[29:09]that person type thing and I you know I use it I
[29:14]don't directly assess it address it but you can kind of use
[29:16]it as a talking point I feel like that's kind of my
[29:19]foot in the door thing like maybe I don't have the most
[29:23]Arab sounding name but when they see that and they be like
[29:25]oh that person's Arab that person's Muslim you can use it as
[29:29]a talking point and most of the time people are genuinely curious
[29:33]they want to know and I have to say alhamdulillah Allah has
[29:36]really blessed me in the field I chose to pursue he's really
[29:40]protected me and I haven't had any major encounters that I couldn't
[29:44]handle myself most of the time I can actually end up turning
[29:47]it into a learning experience so when they ask questions I can
[29:52]explain they want to know a lot of people really want to
[29:55]know more often you'll encounter people who genuinely want to learn than
[29:58]people who outright hate you but I know the number that outright
[30:03]hate you us are increasing just always grin and be it that's
[30:06]the best thing you can do it's not worth it to fight
[30:10]back it's not worth it to holler back and say things back
[30:12]to them it's you have to have you have to remain composed
[30:16]at all times and smile when you want I mean smile is
[30:19]easiest form of Charity it's the easiest thing you can do is
[30:23]to walk up to a person to be pleasant and to remember
[30:26]you're representing your religion do whatever you want people to remember Muslims
[30:35]as it's funny the first thing that comes to mind when when
[30:40]this question was asked was uh there was one time when I
[30:41]was uh you know taking care of a a patient and um
[30:46]I was called a racist and in my mind I look at
[30:51]my badge and I'm like did I not see the name that's
[30:55]on this badge High Go I mean I'm the one who's being
[30:57]raced people are being racist against me I'm not the racist like
[31:01]are seriously calling me a racist but I agree with J just
[31:07]it's way more powerful I promise you if you just continue with
[31:11]the same demeanor smile uh I actually told the patient thank you
[31:19]um and uh it it probably bothers them more uh than than
[31:22]the the the thought that they have about you anyway um and
[31:26]uh you know if you because majority of us either grew up
[31:30]here or have came here when we're at a young young age
[31:34]uh we're part of this Society we grew up with the society
[31:40]uh as long as you are not walking into work with an
[31:43]angry face always upset uh unhappy uh that's not going to develop
[31:49]a good image of yourself which if you're walking in smile on
[31:53]your face greeting everybody uh treating everybody with respect uh being friends
[31:59]with your co-workers uh just keeping in mind the limitations that you
[32:03]have to have uh people will like you they don't care honestly
[32:07]once they see that once they see that we're normal human beings
[32:14]just like they are they can see past all of that thank
[32:17]you both for those answers I have one more question on the
[32:23]flash cards but everyone feel free to ask questions um I'll bring
[32:26]the microphone to you the last question is when choosing a major
[32:30]what were the factors you considered was it money family um Family
[32:33]import happiness compassion Etc um I guess I can talk first so
[32:44]um originally when I wanted to go to college I wanted to
[32:47]be a history and literature major and that was shot down by
[32:50]my dad he said if you're I had originally planned to go
[32:54]to law school so my understanding was I I can you know
[32:56]get get a degree and whatever and it won't make a difference
[33:00]cuz I'm going to be taking the outsat anyway and he's like
[33:03]no you know if you're deciding you want to go that Ro
[33:06]take a degree that can still be marketable afterwards that way in
[33:09]case you decide you don't want a new law uh you have
[33:13]something to fall back on so he suggested business and I picked
[33:15]accounting just because I've always been very partial to math and I
[33:17]took an accounting class in high school and I enjoyed it um
[33:22]I ended up falling in love with it and I ended up
[33:26]sort of dropping the whole law school thing and um inah I'll
[33:29]be sitting for my certified public accounting exam next year and hopefully
[33:33]by this time be a CPA this time next year in um
[33:39]I recommend picking a smart undergrad major if you're going to pick
[33:43]something in a different field make sure you have a contingency plan
[33:48]I think it is important to take a few different classes and
[33:50]sort of feel out what you want to do but try to
[33:54]establish an idea beforehand you don't want to waste too much time
[33:56]in undergrad picking a bunch of different things you kind of want
[33:59]to have a little bit of a focus and alhamdulillah we have
[34:04]so many people around us in so many different fields pick their
[34:07]brains ask questions ask so many questions ask at orientation at your
[34:11]school see what's the best fit for you or try a few
[34:16]things but I truly recommend by your second year try to establish
[34:18]a major try to pick something that you're like okay I kind
[34:22]of know I want to do this the rest of it will
[34:25]fall into place and pray if you don't know what you want
[34:27]to do ask Allah for help that's the one thing I can
[34:31]say he's definitely been my guiding course throughout every decision I've made
[34:36]all through college alhamdulillah um so I chose um an art major
[34:42]because I've always loved painting I've always loved art um I I
[34:49]first started out as just a biology major because I knew I
[34:51]wanted to go to a PA school and that's my biggest thing
[34:54]I wanted to be in medicine not for the money not for
[34:56]anything else just because I want wanted to help take care of
[34:57]people I was always that one person in my family that I
[35:02]like performed First Aid on like any everyone that needed it and
[35:04]whenever my dad heard himself trying to fix something I was always
[35:08]the first one to like clean it up and take care of
[35:09]it so I've always been really interested in the medical Fields but
[35:13]I always had this really strong passion for art as well that
[35:16]I knew I wanted to incorporate in my life in some way
[35:20]and how do I with a PA major I didn't need a
[35:23]specific degree so I was able to complete all my prosites with
[35:25]the bio my um minor and still able to choose a different
[35:31]major and um to balance both has like was so fun for
[35:33]me just to have art classes with my biology classes in um
[35:37]it was really fun and I feel like it helped make me
[35:38]like showcase that I'm a well-rounded person I could fit in both
[35:44]places and my biggest dream was would to be like working at
[35:47]a hospital and have my artwork shown in the hospital cuz you
[35:49]know when you go to the hospital there's different art pieces and
[35:53]stuff likeu that'd be like my biggest dream if I could have
[35:55]like my own art pieces shown in the hospital I work at
[35:59]and just to always continue that as like something in my life
[36:02]because um I really feel like it um is like really big
[36:05]part of me like sharing like my passion sharing what I want
[36:08]to do is through ART and through my paintings so I do
[36:12]that I it's something I always wanted to keep in my life
[36:16]so I made sure that I always could and um I feel
[36:17]like I was able to be in schs pretty well and it
[36:20]was really important to me to choose something that I would be
[36:22]happy with like the rest of my life I'll try to make
[36:31]this quick looks like pizza's here so um so uh there's a
[36:37]a couple things I want to say to this effect um number
[36:41]one you know some people may differ with me but I don't
[36:44]think that there's such a thing as the perfect job where it's
[36:48]awesome from the day you walk in till the day or to
[36:52]the hour that you walk in till the hour that you walk
[36:57]out every day you go in um um you know somebody can
[36:59]disagree with me but I don't think there is you you have
[37:03]to love what you do other that way it's not a job
[37:09]because a job you can become very uh uh bored with or
[37:11]become tired of if you love what you do and it's a
[37:16]job at the same time that makes it a lot easier to
[37:20]wake up early in the morning a lot easier to uh you
[37:21]know uh answer pages in the middle of the night and stuff
[37:25]like that so if you don't love what you do then that's
[37:27]not a career that you want to uh go into and believe
[37:31]me some people have changed careers in the middle of one pathway
[37:36]and got to another pathway uh as far as you know preparation
[37:38]into what you want to do there are couple of schools of
[37:40]thought with that so some schools want to see a well-rounded person
[37:46]they want a person who is an art major going into medicine
[37:49]uh a history major going to Medicine some people would say well
[37:54]if you want to be more prepared to go into medicine you
[37:56]want to do stuff in the biology and and chemistry kind of
[38:00]field I don't know if there's a right answer to that question
[38:04]um I think uh you do what you enjoy uh my suggestion
[38:10]would be I'm definitely not an expert but if you love science
[38:13]go something into the science field if you love math do something
[38:16]that's engineering if you love uh history and and and such go
[38:22]into uh law if you love um uh you know numbers also
[38:25]going to an accounting so I I think it's really important to
[38:32]like the subject that you're doing um you know there is definitely
[38:36]the the parents aspect that gets uh involved in there and you
[38:40]definitely want to do uh uh you definitely want to make your
[38:46]parents happy so uh striking that balance again uh is something that
[38:49]you want to uh try to accomplish it may not be easy
[38:52]but it's definitely something that you want to keep in the back
[38:57]of your mind so that wraps up with the flash card questions
[39:01]anybody else have any questions want to raise their hand or something
[39:04]I'm goinging to you okay where do you see yourself in 5
[39:20]years still old and like 28 okay so in by that time
[39:27]um um I'd be like working at a hospital as a PA
[39:31]hopefully in surgery by then that's like my end goal I really
[39:33]want to be able to help in surgery um in sh by
[39:37]then I start thinking about kids but it's only when I'm like
[39:40]happy with my period that I would start doing that but um
[39:44]yeah sha just being a PA and working in the hospital doing
[39:46]what I can to help others hopefully helping a lot of different
[39:48]organizations too like doctors feel like I'm in the one of my
[39:54]interviews know that question youself in 5 or 10 years um for
[40:01]me as of right now the company I'm interning with alhamdulillah I've
[40:04]been with for a while so I'm hoping I'll be getting in
[40:09]a full-time offer with them so my plan is to be sitting
[40:11]for my CP exam next year and to be certified and then
[40:16]I will continue on working for the company for I think around
[40:19]5 years was what I wanted to do so I in by
[40:24]my I see myself as a manager or a senior associate in
[40:28][Music] to ask that question um so if if I know that
[40:44]I'm thinking about it in 5 years I'd like to see myself
[40:49]in an upper management position in um uh the emergency department or
[40:53]the hospital that I work at so that I can work uh
[40:55]work less shifts so that I can be more involved uh with
[41:01]my community and I would also like to be able to uh
[41:08]help um and volunteer at the um hospital that's being built in
[41:12]K right now and volunteer some time there uh for uh you
[41:18]know seeing patients people who need help and um free clinics and
[41:22]stuff like that so that's definitely something I'd love to do in
[41:25]you guys all achieve your goals any other questions come on we
[41:33]can wait until Sol we don't yeah any questions there's at least
