[23:10][Music] thank you so much brother the son to the beautiful recitation
[23:27]has arrived just a quick introduction that doesn't do justice Dr masterton
[23:35]has a PHD in Islamic literature of West Africa in which she
[23:41]critiqued the effects of secularism and colonialism upon traditional Islamic teachings on
[23:46]the south um she attained this from the school of Oriental and
[23:50]African studies University of London she converted to Islam in 1999 and
[24:00]she came to the school of in 2003.
[24:01]Dr masterton has been teaching for 20 years and has lectured while

[24:12]also worked in media for 16 years producing and presenting several hundred
[24:17]programs for Sahar TV press tv Hadi TV and Applebee TV she
[24:23]has published two books passing through the dream and Shia's spirituality for
[24:28]the 21st century which my wife and I are currently reading and
[24:31]loving and would recommend everyone to get it thank you so much
[24:36]doctor for being with us and please welcome Dr Marston with aloud
[24:40]salawat foreign thank you very much to uh brother Musa for inviting
[25:28]me here and I just want to say on the renovation of
[25:35]the building and inshallah I pray that it will bring inshallah more
[25:42]people coming and with the effort that has been put into it
[25:46]there will be Baraka in the community as well inshallah so as
[25:55]we are coming into the month of Ramadan I am just going
[26:02]to touch upon the subject of connecting to the origins of our
[26:09]soul and I will inshallah elaborate upon what I mean by this
[26:19]and why I'm talking about this just to start with the holy
[26:28]prophet peace be upon him and his holy progeny said praise belongs
[26:33]to Allah who in his firstness was solitary and in his beginninglessness
[26:39]was exalted through divinity and great through his magnificence and Power he
[26:47]originated that which he produced and brought into being that which he
[26:55]created without a model preceding anything but he created our Lord the
[27:00]Eternal unstitched the heavens and the Earth through the subtlety of his
[27:05]lordship and the knowledge within his omniscience created all that he created
[27:12]through the laws of his power and split the sky through the
[27:16]light of dawn so none changes his creation none Alters his handiwork
[27:21]none repels his law and none rejects his command there is no
[27:28]place of rest away from his call no cessation to his dominion
[27:34]and No Interruption of his term he is the truly existent from
[27:41]the first and the truly enduring forever he is veiled from his
[27:45]creatures by his light in the high Horizon in the Towering might
[27:51]and in the lofty Dominion he is above all things and Below
[27:56]all things so he manifested himself to his creation without being seen
[28:03]and he transcends being gazed upon he wanted to be distinguished by
[28:10]the profession of unity when he withdrew behind the veil of his
[28:15]light Rose High in his exaltation and concealed himself from his creation
[28:19]he sent to their Messengers so that they might be his conclusive
[28:26]argument against his creatures and so his Messengers to them might be
[28:31]Witnesses against them he sent among them prophets bearing Good Tidings and
[28:35]warning that whosoever perished might perish by a clear sign and buy
[28:39]a clear sign he might live who lived and that the servants
[28:46]might understand of their Lord that which of which they had been
[28:48]ignorant recognize him in his lordship after they had denied it and
[28:56]profess his unity in his divinity after they had stubbornly resisted and
[29:03]that is so I'll just take uh one line out of this
[29:08]which I find interesting and that is where it says that Allah
[29:15]manifested himself to his creation without being seen So He makes himself
[29:27]known He makes himself apparent without us being able to see him
[29:32]and the end of the narration talks about affirming his his lordship
[29:41]and his ilahia his divinity I also wanted to talk about an
[29:53]aspect of our existence that we often forget which is that aspect
[30:01]which was created in the realm of pre-existence the Quran doesn't go
[30:09]into detail about the origins of our soul but we find references
[30:14]to it so I don't know if anyone here has had some
[30:24]sense of the place from which they came but this is what
[30:31]I'm referring to and the importance of maintaining a connection to that
[30:38]place from which we came in order to maintain a proper perspective
[30:43]on why we are here in this world and what this world
[30:48]is he was a universal light a form of Consciousness and knowledge
[31:32]in this higher level of existence where he was created so this
[31:37]muhammadi is not a personal light but an entity of knowledge and
[31:46]wisdom out of which the holy prophet peace be upon him and
[31:49]his holy progeny the human being was created and the narrations say
[31:54]that everything else was also created out of this light uh so
[32:03]we have again a few verses in the Quran again they're not
[32:08]clear about exactly what this spiritual realm looks like we have narrations
[32:14]that kind of fill in uh for the references that are in
[32:19]the Holy Quran so we have the famous which you probably all
[32:26]know very well uh Sora 7 172.
[32:29]where as it says that Allah speaks directly to the souls that
[32:37]were created from an Israel and he says and they say Bala
[32:46]shahidna when we look at the narrations we also find that there
[32:59]are as I said certain additions to or we could say explanations
[33:03]for what the Holy Quran has alluded to so we've got this
[33:08]famous and the souls witnessed that and we have other ayas where
[33:22]the Quran refers to amithak or Covenant that the prophets made with
[33:30]Allah so as we see in Surah Ali Imran where it says
[33:33]when Allah made his Covenant with the prophets he said behold that
[33:38]which I have given you of the scripture and wisdom and afterwards
[33:44]they will come to you a messenger confirming that which you possess
[33:50]so believe in him and you shall help him and Allah says
[33:56]do you agree and will you take up my burden in this
[34:00]matter and they said we agree then he said bear witness I
[34:03]am a witness with you so we if you look carefully you
[34:10]can see that other things were happening in this spiritual Realm where
[34:16]the souls confirmed the rubia of Allah and then we find that
[34:28]the profits also made a covenant I mean to confirm the messenger
[34:34]with his final mission and again one might say well they came
[34:39]before the holy prophet peace be upon him and said he progeny
[34:43]so how can they assist him in his mission because he came
[34:47]last but if you think about how each one of them when
[34:51]they came they paved the way for that final mission this is
[34:57]how they are preparing the way for the final messenger and in
[35:01]this way they are supporting him we also see in Surah chapter
[35:10]33 verses 7 and 8.
[35:13]as it says and when we took a covenant from the prophets
[35:16]and from you o Muhammad peace be upon him and sorry progeny
[35:23]and from Noah and Ibrahim and Musa and Isa IBN Maryam we
[35:27]took from them a solemn Covenant that he may ask the loyal
[35:33]of their loyalty and he has prepared a painful punishment for the
[35:36]Unfaithful who concealed the truth so these Covenants are made in this
[35:46]spiritual Realm so that when we return back to proximity to the
[35:58]one we cannot claim that we didn't know about this knowledge we
[36:03]can't claim ignorance and again the prophets are making this mythak because
[36:10]they are also being tested on their loyalty to this mythak as
[36:20]well we've got another narration from Imam where he says Allah prior
[36:26]to creating the heavens the Earth the Jinn mankind the Sun and
[36:32]the Moon put his religion and knowledge on water when Allah intended
[36:36]to create the creatures he spread them all before him and questioned
[36:41]them and he said who is your lord man and the first
[36:50]and foremost to reply to this question were the messenger of Allah
[36:54]and the imams of Salaam so this is another testimony or another
[37:06]we could say another narration about this testimony giving more detail on
[37:12]the testimony of the souls so we have the Surah in the
[37:18]Holy Quran where the souls say yes we witness your Oneness we
[37:21]witness that you are our Lord our creator you have power over
[37:27]us we are your servants but then we have this other commentary
[37:30]from Imam which is saying that the first of those Souls were
[37:37]the mat so mean who testified to the robobia of Allah and
[37:46]then Allah made them bear his knowledge so we know that the
[37:52]Quran talks about this knowledge being a burden even we know they
[38:01]talk about their knowledge being a burden a weight that most of
[38:07]humanity don't have the capacity to bear and this is why as
[38:16]it says in the other narrations in al-khafi this is why many
[38:20]of the doors the gateways to knowledge as transmitted by the imamsalam
[38:28]have been closed because the early followers well after the main Companions
[38:35]of Amir lost their lives were martyred after that the quality of
[38:41]the followers declined they didn't have the capacity to bear this knowledge
[38:44]but in this spiritual world Allah says he addresses the angels and
[38:52]he says these are the bearers of My Religion my Deen and
[38:58]my knowledge my Ellen and these are the custodians over my creatures
[39:04]and these are the people who will be called upon to give
[39:12]account I mean they are the witnesses over us when Allah addressed
[39:18]the sons of Adam meaning Humanity he said acknowledge of Allah and
[39:23]the rulership of these people and obedience to them and then Humanity
[39:28]said yes our Lord we do acknowledge so this is an extra
[39:34]commentary we could say where Humanity knew in the spiritual world they
[39:43]acknowledge the muscle mean and they testified that the matsumin are the
[39:51]bearers of Allah's knowledge and that therefore they are the ones who
[39:56]are worthy of being followed and obeyed again we've got narrations probably
[40:04]you've read them that says that the souls in this spiritual realm
[40:11]of pre-existence are created out of different natures and that the souls
[40:20]that have a similar nature when they meet again in this material
[40:24]world they recognize each other so this would be why again you
[40:31]have that sense of recognition sometimes you meet someone from the other
[40:34]side of the world but you have that sense of recognition you
[40:37]are of the same kind of soul so that is already acknowledged
[40:44]in Islam that you knew each other prior to coming into this
[40:48]world so we might think about why should I um engage in
[40:59]remembering the origin of my soul what's the purpose in that one
[41:07]of the reasons as I said at the beginning is that if
[41:13]you keep a we could say psychic meaning soul and Mind and
[41:22]Spirit a psychic attachment to the spiritual realm from which you come
[41:29]from it provides you with a perspective on your life here so
[41:34]again we know the message one of the main messages of the
[41:38]Quran is not to get lost in neglectfulness don't be deceived by
[41:49]the life of this world that you are in but always keep
[41:57]in mind the fact that we know we are here temporarily but
[42:02]it's not just a a mental exercise it shouldn't just be a
[42:08]mental exercise it shouldn't just be oh yeah I've been told that
[42:10]my soul was created and I've been told that I'm going to
[42:14]lead this world um so you know and I will do my
[42:19]best to not become attached to this world but it actually needs
[42:24]to be something that is a living experience those memories of that
[42:33]previous Realm need to be living memories within you so having this
[42:41]perspective as I've said here means that you have an eagle eye
[42:45]view of your life here it's a bit like you know those
[42:49]narrations people when they talk about being on the operating the operating
[42:54]table and um they part of them leaves their body and is
[43:03]above themselves watching themselves being operated on having this remembrance of where
[43:12]you came before enables you to have a similar perspective of yourself
[43:17]as a human being within this realm of existence and the more
[43:23]we actively cultivate this connection to this realm and we recall memories
[43:30]from that realm the closer we move to the perspective of the
[43:37]Holy Quran when you read the Holy Quran you see it's always
[43:40]talking about Humanity uh in in uh quite a detached tone of
[43:48]voice and I've said in quite a few talks in the past
[43:50]this was one of the things I noticed as I was coming
[43:54]into Islam when I read the Holy Quran and it still is
[43:58]what convinces me that it is a revelation that it doesn't have
[44:02]a human voice and the commentary that it makes about humanity is
[44:06]a commentary that is looking at Humanity from an objective perspective and
[44:12]this is what we are encouraged to have so that we don't
[44:17]lose our way and again I'm saying this because our times that
[44:20]we are living in as we know very well are getting crazier
[44:28]and crazier more and more bizarre and things are changing in a
[44:35]way that we we sense the changes but we don't know where
[44:38]those changes are coming from who is behind those changes where is
[44:43]it all going we're seeing um a collapse in you know the
[44:52]majority Muslim countries collapse of economy with war and Corruption and a
[45:01]collapse of leadership as well so we may be wondering where do
[45:05]I go what's my future what should I be doing with my
[45:09]life so we have to kind of maintain this kind of two
[45:18]two aspects to our existence one aspect is that yes we are
[45:24]here yes we need to make an effort to attain knowledge and
[45:31]promote that knowledge and fight for justice and that's a whole other
[45:36]topic because I would argue that there's a lot that we're in
[45:40]the dark about at the same time we have to be careful
[45:45]not to be so drawn into [Music] the things that get thrown
[45:52]at us the social and political issues with which you know sometimes
[45:58]we're asked to give a kind of a knee-jerk reaction we're constantly
[46:01]running from one issue to the other reacting to this reacting to
[46:05]that and you can feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of things
[46:12]that we have to deal with and with that over time you
[46:21]can become exhausted and you can become exhausted and then you can
[46:27]reach a point where you say I don't know if there's anything
[46:34]I can really do to improve things in this world when you're
[46:38]younger you start out with that as they say you know the
[46:42]fire kind of like yeah I'm gonna change things I'm going to
[46:45]make a difference 20 years down the line you know your your
[46:52]your aims come come down dramatically as time is passing you start
[46:58]to realize your powerlessness and you start to wonder um what's my
[47:05]direction you might think that oh in 20 years time I will
[47:10]have worked it out but things are changing so fast that you
[47:14]actually have to keep reassessing your direction you can get to your
[47:21]your 40s and still have to reassess your direction you still haven't
[47:26]worked it out because things have changed since 10 15 years ago
[47:29]when you thought you knew your direction so with all these distractions
[47:41]you can start to lose a sense of Who You Are you
[47:44]just get lost in everything and you can be outwardly doing your
[47:49]armal but inwardly you might have a sense of emptiness or you
[47:55]might have a sense of I don't really know who I am
[47:59]so this is why it's important to connect back to where we
[48:04]came from because it's in doing that and connecting back to where
[48:10]you came from that you are going to remember who you are
[48:13]and you're going to intuitively receive that knowledge of what you are
[48:18]supposed to be doing here it's like a reset when you maintain
[48:24]this attachment to the realm of pre-existence it's a reset um the
[48:31]scholars often talk about uh you might have heard this term hermeneutics
[48:36]which was used hermeneutics was originally the science of going back to
[48:43]the origin through a religious text and you interpret the religious text
[48:51]and through that you return back to Allah um this is something
[48:59]that you can do in terms of reading the Quran but not
[49:05]only that reading the early history foreign it might sound a bit
[49:16]far-fetched but I'm trying to give some kind of practical tips here
[49:21]the the orifa um actually say that the you know these books
[49:30]are a gateway to this spiritual world I lately heard a video
[49:37]I haven't listened to it all but there's a contemporary scientist who
[49:42]is now saying that time is does not consist of just a
[49:49]linear set of seconds minutes hours days and years that are passing
[49:53]there's a there's a video online which I forgot the name of
[49:58]it but she is actually saying that what we think is the
[50:02]past may not be the past the events that happened in what
[50:12]we think is the past are still present and active and in
[50:15]a way when we enter the month of maharram that's what people
[50:21]are doing they are actually reconnecting back to what happened with those
[50:29]events and in a way connecting this time with that time that
[50:32]time is drawn into this time it becomes real it's not just
[50:40]a Sentimental remembrance um so that's another thing to reflect upon that
[50:49]time is more flexible than we think it is it's more malleable
[50:52]and the quantum physicists are saying this so when are you actively
[51:03]attempt to connect back to that realm in which you were created
[51:08]this is actually a living experience that you can have you're connecting
[51:16]yourself here with who you were in that realm and again one
[51:23]way of doing that is to engage in a lot of liquor
[51:28]daily vicar reflection on the higher Realms because the more you reflect
[51:33]upon the higher realms the more they become unveiled and the more
[51:38]you can start to sense and witness and see um aspects about
[51:45]that spiritual Realm with regard to the history of the salaam it's
[51:48]the same when you read the history and you you engage with
[51:56]the personalities of that time it's not just that you're reading the
[52:00]words on the page in a book you are connecting to the
[52:09]personalities and the time that lies behind that page there's a scholar
[52:13]from Mali who said that writing is the photograph of knowledge so
[52:20]these books words are just gateways to other realities and that's why
[52:29]we're encouraged to engage in the crallah um we can see that
[52:37]the Quran also encourages us to engage in the qur Allah because
[52:40]it says that it leads to remembrance of the home the kruddar
[52:46]which again you've probably read many times and there's some debate on
[52:54]whether the DAR is the afterlife so the schools have thought that
[52:59]are a little bit more literalist they say that the DAR is
[53:03]just the afterlife but we have other interpretations of the DAR being
[53:11]that realm from which you came as well and in fact a
[53:15]lot of the scholars talk about coming and returning so remembrance of
[53:23]the home is a remembrance of that place from which you came
[53:28]and to which you are going to return inshallah so I'll just
[53:33]um I wanted to recommend this book it's not a specifically sheety
[53:42]book but it deals with a very very crucial issue so I
[53:45]did my doctorate on this book and it's called ambiguous Adventure but
[53:53]it really captures our experience of living with two realities side by
[54:04]side living in Two Worlds side by side because we are living
[54:09]in a secular world that says that only this realm of existence
[54:15]exists and we are also living in a world or worlds that
[54:22]have different levels of existence but we just have to go about
[54:25]in this world pretending that we don't have a foot in the
[54:29]spiritual world and this book captures that dilemma I can really recommend
[54:36]it for you to understand conceptually and objectively what we are grappling
[54:42]with because what I'm seeing happening with Muslims and which is being
[54:49]very much encouraged is that fine do your Salah do your fasting
[54:53]do your Customs but your mind belongs to us you know your
[55:02]soul belongs to us your Consciousness belongs to us we don't mind
[55:06]if you do your Salah we don't mind even if you have
[55:10]your political protests but you're thinking belongs to this whole program of
[55:17]secularization and so this is what is happening is that the experience
[55:24]of Muslims is the same as their neighbor who's not even a
[55:31]Muslim the only difference between you and your neighbor who's not a
[55:34]Muslim or might even be an atheist the only difference is that
[55:37]your Customs are different but your thinking and your lived experience of
[55:41]this world is is just the same as your neighbor so this
[55:48]is what I mean by we are missing out on these gateways
[55:53]uh to knowledge and in this book there's an interesting conversation about
[56:02]science and spirituality and this Muslim says to this Frenchman he says
[56:15]um from the bottom of my heart I wish for you to
[56:19]ReDiscover the feeling of anguish in the face of the dying Sun
[56:25]I ardently wish that for the West when the Sun dies no
[56:31]scientific certainty should keep us from weeping for it no rational evidence
[56:39]should keep us from asking that it be reborn you are slowly
[56:48]dying under the weight of evidence I wish you that anguish like
[56:54]a resurrection and then he says something interesting he says evidence so
[57:00]we're talking about like modern science and this is not totally against
[57:03]science I mean science is good but this is this argument is
[57:06]talking about don't let that science obliterate a deeper experience of reality
[57:13]he says evidence is a quality of the surface your science is
[57:22]the Triumph of evidence a proliferation of the surface it makes you
[57:30]masters of the external but at the same time it Exiles you
[57:36]there more and more so the more you become obsessed with external
[57:43]reality the more you lose your connection to the internal reality and
[57:49]the more you become exiled just in this world so just to
[57:58]conclude he says that the West sets up science against the invading
[58:07]chaos like setting it up against a barricade setting up a barricade
[58:11]against this impending chaos that is going to happen at the end
[58:17]of this cycle of humanity so I will conclude here I'm sure
[58:25]you've had a long day at work and probably getting a bit
[58:28]tired but I know we're coming into the month of Ramadan and
[58:31]this is what I wanted to start with um because again some
[58:39]people might be thinking okay how's my month of Ramadan going to
[58:42]be some people might be thinking I'm not feeling very inspired but
[58:46]I'm going to do my best and we don't just want to
[58:54]go through this month doing the usual Customs but rather this is
[58:58]an opportunity for us to reconnect back to who we really are
