[2:14]enlighten your hearts and illuminate your majalis with a loud salawat ala
[2:18]muhammad respected brothers and sisters the greatest goal of every believer in
[2:38]this life is to build relationship with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala but
[2:44]in order for me to create that relationship with my lord i
[2:50]must be able to feel his presence and existence because if i
[2:55]cannot feel the existence and presence of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala it'll
[2:59]be difficult for me to connect with him and what complicates this
[3:05]task is that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala cannot be felt or perceived
[3:10]through the five senses we cannot see allah subhanahu wa ta'ala we
[3:15]cannot touch him we cannot hear him and that's why to many
[3:19]individuals allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is an abstract being allah subhanahu wa
[3:25]ta'ala is a stranger to them they can't connect with allah subhanahu
[3:28]wa ta'ala because they cannot connect with him through the five senses
[3:36]but a believer you find a a believer is always able to
[3:41]feel allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and he is always able to see
[3:46]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala but not with his eyes imam ali alaihi
[3:51]salam he was asked one day have you ever seen allah subhanahu
[3:57]wa ta'ala the imam to the surprise of the person that was
[4:01]asking the question he told him yes i have seen my lord
[4:06]so the person that asked him the question he said how does
[4:09]allah look like in what manner did you see him in what
[4:12]way did you see him can you describe how you saw him
[4:15]the imam he beautifully replies he says he says that i did
[4:27]not see allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with my eyes but rather i
[4:32]saw him with the light of my heart and that is the
[4:35]iman so i see allah and i feel him the imam says
[4:40]but not through the five senses through my heart but the question
[4:44]is how am i able to reach that state where i can
[4:48]feel allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's presence with my heart you see many
[4:52]of us brothers and sisters we feel the existence and the presence
[4:57]of other human beings and that's why you find many people that
[5:02]in front of other human beings they're what they're very respectful but
[5:06]once they're in private you find they commit so many sins in
[5:10]front of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala as if he's not watching why
[5:13]what's the reason behind that because they don't feel the presence of
[5:16]allah because allah cannot be seen cannot be perceived through the five
[5:20]senses to them allah doesn't exist that's why he's ashamed to commit
[5:24]a sin in front of a human but not in front of
[5:26]allah because he can't feel the presence of allah so how can
[5:31]we attain this god conscious state that we feel the presence of
[5:37]allah because this is not an easy task if we go back
[5:43]to the traditions of we see that tell us that in order
[5:50]for us to feel the presence of allah and then build that
[5:54]relationship with him we must turn to our emotions and there are
[6:01]three main emotions that we need in order for us to feel
[6:06]the presence of allah in order for us to build that relationship
[6:10]with allah the first emotion according to the hadith that we need
[6:15]in order to feel allah's presence is fear the fear factor you
[6:21]see my friends one of the greatest obstacles between us and god
[6:26]is our sins our sins they create a barrier between me and
[6:32]my lord and every time i sin i stain my soul because
[6:38]sins if we could see the essence and the true nature of
[6:41]sins sins are nothing but impurity and spiritual filth but unfortunately we
[6:47]don't see that because it's spiritual impurity it's spiritual filth and what
[6:53]this does is when i sin there is a barrier placed between
[6:56]me and my lord you see many people they ask many young
[7:00]men and women they ask me why is it that when i
[7:02]do dua when i read dua i don't connect with allah it's
[7:06]not interesting some people when they pray they tell me salah is
[7:09]so boring those five minutes are the most boring five minutes of
[7:15]my life do you know why brothers and sisters one reason to
[7:18]this is because there's a barrier between them and allah because before
[7:23]he comes to salah he's backbiting he's listening to music before he
[7:27]comes to read dua he's disobeying allah he's committing sins and these
[7:33]sins are like walls between him and allah so when he's speaking
[7:36]to allah those words are not even reaching allah there's a wall
[7:40]between him and her and allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and that wall
[7:44]prevents my words from reaching allah that's why those five minutes of
[7:48]my prayer are so boring because it's like i'm talking to a
[7:51]wall i'm talking to myself and that's why i always tell these
[7:57]people when they tell me these young men and women when they
[8:00]tell me that how do i connect more with my ibadah i
[8:03]tell them just try this for one week just try it i
[8:07]know it's difficult i know it requires lots of effort it's very
[8:10]hard for some of us but try it for one week make
[8:14]a commitment that you will not commit any sin for one week
[8:18]just one week you'll not you won't backbite anyone you won't listen
[8:22]to music you won't hurt anyone's feelings you won't look at anything
[8:26]you're not supposed to look you won't disrespect anyone you'll do all
[8:30]your wajubat and then after one week since for that one week
[8:35]you've been clean and there is no barrier between you and your
[8:38]lord after that go and pray two rakahs to allah subhanahu wa
[8:43]ta'ala and then you will see how much you'll enjoy those two
[8:47]rakahs you'll finally begin to feel the pleasure of dua the pleasure
[8:52]of supplicating to allah and praying to allah because that barrier is
[8:56]no longer there that pathway to allah is clear speak to him
[9:01]talk to him and you'll see how fulfilling that is how satisfying
[9:05]that is and how much you will enjoy it now allah subhanahu
[9:11]wa ta'ala he wants us to stay away from our sins he
[9:17]wants us to stay away from our sins and he tells us
[9:21]allah nonstop in the quran in the hadith he warns us of
[9:25]the harms of sins how sins destroy our lives they take us
[9:29]away from allah they distract us from this true life that we're
[9:33]supposed to seek nearness to allah and build the next life our
[9:37]sins they distract us and we get indulged in this world they
[9:40]destroy us they're harmful to us allah is constantly what trying to
[9:44]tell us this point what what's the problem the problem is we
[9:47]human beings don't listen we're too indulged in this materialistic world we
[9:53]just can't concentrate on that fact so what does allah subhanahu wa
[9:58]ta'ala do allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in order for us to stay
[10:03]away from these harmful sins he instills within us what fear allah
[10:11]subhanahu wa ta'ala is telling us nicely stay away from sins stay
[10:15]away from disobeying me because you are the one that's gonna face
[10:18]the harmful consequences if you disobey me everything allah tells us to
[10:22]do it's because it's good for us and if allah tells us
[10:25]to stay away from something because it's bad for us so when
[10:28]allah tells me stay away from this because he wants my interest
[10:32]so he asked nicely but we're too indulged in this materialistic world
[10:36]so what does he do allah has to instill that fear allah
[10:40]tells us look if you don't stay away from that sin there's
[10:43]gonna be punishment and now because there's a punishment and because i
[10:48]fear getting punished what do i do i think twice now before
[10:52]committing that sin and this is how every government the law of
[10:56]every government works you see in every government when they legislate a
[11:01]new law with that law there is fear instilled within the hearts
[11:07]of the citizens so when a government says that this law has
[11:11]been legislated with it what do they do they say whoever breaks
[11:15]this law will be punished correct either a fine or they will
[11:21]be incarcerated they will be persecuted why do they do that have
[11:25]you thought about it why does the government always place a fine
[11:30]or a punishment for breaking the law do you know why because
[11:35]if there was no punishment for breaking the law most people wouldn't
[11:38]follow the law most people would break the law can you imagine
[11:42]if there was absolutely no punishment can you imagine if a government
[11:46]they would just come out and you know for example the president
[11:48]or the police chief he would just ask people politely to follow
[11:52]the rules to follow the laws we ask our citizens and we
[11:56]rely and depend on their sound judgment to stay away from breaking
[12:00]the law would the people listen if you're on the highway and
[12:04]you're late for work would you go 70 miles an hour or
[12:07]you're gonna go 100 miles an hour if there's no cops of
[12:09]course you're gonna speed what's gonna stop you from breaking the law
[12:12]in many cases but the punishment because you know there you know
[12:15]there's gonna be a fine so when the government does that when
[12:19]they place a fine or they punish me for breaking the law
[12:22]is it because they're evil it's not because they're evil it's because
[12:26]they want to ensure that everyone follows the law they want to
[12:30]ensure that no one breaks the law because they know if the
[12:33]law is broken there'll be chaos it'll lead to harm people are
[12:37]gonna commit crimes and society will be destroyed in order to keep
[12:42]society from that harm away from that harm what did they put
[12:46]they put the punishment so you need the fear in order for
[12:49]people to what stay away from harm allah works in the same
[12:54]way many people they ask why are there so many verses in
[12:58]the quran talking about fear and about the day of judgment and
[13:01]about about how allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will punish some people in
[13:05]the fires of hell why isn't allah merciful isn't allah forgiving allah
[13:10]subhanahu wa ta'ala is merciful and forgiving and because he loves us
[13:14]because of his mercy allah has used fear because if there was
[13:17]no fear we'd go and we commit sins and we destroy ourselves
[13:22]because allah subhanahu wa ta'ala loves me and he cares for me
[13:26]he wants me to stay away from that sin there's no other
[13:28]way for me to stay away from that sin but what to
[13:30]tell me there's gonna be punishment so it's because allah loves me
[13:34]that he has placed these punishments so that what we think twice
[13:37]before going after sins because they destroy us but the question is
[13:43]here how do i develop that fear factor within me that state
[13:51]in which i always fear allah subhanahu wa ta'ala there are some
[13:55]brothers they ask me they tell me why is it that we
[13:58]don't fear god i don't find it in my heart i don't
[14:02]find it anywhere in my heart that i fear god i can
[14:04]go and commit 50 sins a day there's absolutely no fear why
[14:09]you see when it comes to the government i fear breaking the
[14:12]laws i'm not gonna speed on the highway i'm not gonna go
[14:15]against the laws of taxes and the irs i'm not gonna do
[14:18]any of that there is fear when it comes to the laws
[14:21]of government but why is it when it comes to allah god
[14:24]there is no fear why don't many of us fear allah subhanahu
[14:29]wa ta'ala what's the problem how do i develop it how do
[14:33]i develop that fear within me one of the best ways brothers
[14:37]and sisters to develop that fear within me so that i do
[14:41]not get indulged in the world and i always remember my goal
[14:45]in life that is to seek nearness to allah and to build
[14:48]the next world is to what is to remind yourself of the
[14:53]day that you will depart this world remind yourselves every day that
[14:58]this world is what it's temporary and there is a day that
[15:02]will come in which i will die i will leave this world
[15:06]and i will be placed in that small grave of mine you
[15:08]see here in the us people don't like to think about the
[15:11]day of their deaths if you want to destroy someone's appetite destroy
[15:16]their day what do you tell them you tell them one day
[15:18]you're gonna die you're gonna be placed six feet under if that
[15:20]person is laughing you're just gonna you know destroy destroy his day
[15:25]you're gonna destroy his appetite they don't wanna think about their death
[15:28]because they just wanna concentrate on this life they just wanna live
[15:32]the moment and that's why one of the names of death in
[15:37]our hadith is what is hadam al ladat hadam al ladat means
[15:41]what it's the destroyer or the ruiner of desires anytime i'm having
[15:47]fun i remember death i say wait a minute wait a minute
[15:50]it's not worth it life is too short let me not wait
[15:53]go after this sin let me not go after my desire and
[15:57]that's why one of the best ways brothers and sisters one of
[16:01]the best ways to remind myself of death every single day is
[16:06]to visit the graveyard once in a while visit the graveyard when
[16:09]you visit the graveyard this reminds you that look my father is
[16:13]buried here my my uncle my relatives my uncles they're buried here
[16:17]and one day i will be buried there as well and that's
[16:20]why the holy quran says allah says that you're so preoccupied and
[16:30]indulged in your lives in this dunya until you visit the graveyards
[16:34]and then you begin to think it's not worth it this life
[16:37]is too short i'm gonna go six feet under one day and
[16:40]that's why it's it's recommended that we hear a maw'elah all the
[16:44]time a maw'elah is a sermon a sermon is what a sermon
[16:49]a sermon is what every day or all the time we remind
[16:53]ourselves of the same things you see if you attended funerals you
[16:56]always hear the same stuff in the funeral what remember one day
[17:00]we're gonna die be good people give the poor stay away from
[17:03]sins how many times have we heard that in our lives thousands
[17:06]of times every time we go to to to a funeral and
[17:09]the speaker is talking about something we hear that is this useless
[17:13]repetition it's not it's useful repetition because the human being loses focus
[17:18]so easily forgets so easily wanders so easily and gets indulged in
[17:23]this world so he needs a reminder every day every week that
[17:28]what that this will come to an end and this is how
[17:32]do i develop the fear factor i remember when i was young
[17:37]before i mentioned this there is a request there's an owner of
[17:42]owner of al musri suites who is towing cars parked on his
[17:46]lot so who whoever has parked his car in the parking lot
[17:50]parking lot of al musri i think al musri suites please go
[17:54]and remove your car because your car is being towed remember when
[18:04]i was young maybe i was about 15 years old i attended
[18:08]the burial burial of the father of one of my friends and
[18:12]this was in the middle east and it was the first time
[18:16]in my life that i had seen someone a human being being
[18:19]buried so i just looked over the grave and over there they
[18:23]don't bury them with a casket they take the body out and
[18:25]they put it inside the grave and then they put the soil
[18:29]saw how they put him in that grave and then they put
[18:31]the soil over his face it was very frightening for me it
[18:35]was the first time that i saw a human being being buried
[18:38]wallahi i remember for an entire month after that every time i
[18:43]would want to enjoy something i'd want to laugh about something that
[18:47]memory would come in my mind i could no longer laugh for
[18:50]an entire month i could not concentrate on anything imagine if i
[18:54]would do that twice a year three times a year it always
[18:59]keeps me in check it always tells me what one day i
[19:03]will go there and that's why i will what stay away from
[19:06]those sins those harmful sins so this is number one this is
[19:09]the fear factor and in this way when there is the fear
[19:13]factor i'll stay away from sins and if i stay away from
[19:16]sins this clears the way between me and allah i can create
[19:20]that relationship with my lord the second the second emotion that we
[19:26]need in order to build our relationship with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[19:30]is the hope factor we need hope i need to always remind
[19:35]myself that allah is merciful allah is forgiven forgiving and no matter
[19:44]how many sins i have performed allah will still forgive me of
[19:48]my sins i spoke an entire lecture about mercy and forgiveness in
[19:52]islam and how allah will forgive me of all my sins i
[19:55]just have to ask i just have to repent to allah so
[19:59]i have to always what i have to always remind myself that
[20:03]allah's doors are always opened i have to remind myself of the
[20:07]great reward that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives just for praying turikat
[20:11]just for doing a few ajibat a few a'amal remind myself of
[20:17]the jannah of the paradise and how great it is that the
[20:21]hadith says the hadith of rasulullah when he describes the jannah the
[20:24]paradise he says about it how does rasulullah describe jannah rasulullah says
[20:38]three words rasulullah says jannah the paradise heaven no human being has
[20:45]ever seen anything like it no human being has heard anything like
[20:49]it and no human being can even imagine anything like it it's
[20:53]beyond our imagination so anything that the prophet would tell us is
[20:57]still less and this jannah allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives it for
[21:01]us just for staying away from few sins and doing five prayers
[21:05]a day and doing some other chores it's very very easy so
[21:08]i remind myself of the hope factor so that i don't want
[21:11]i don't say oh there's only sins and no and allah is
[21:14]gonna punish me no there's also the reward there's also the mercy
[21:18]and the forgiveness of allah and this is how a mu'min lives
[21:23]by he lives with two wings one is the hope that he
[21:26]has in allah and the other is the fear that he has
[21:30]of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because we need both of them because
[21:33]if it's just fear fear fear we become alienated from allah we
[21:37]see allah as an evil dictator he just want he just wants
[21:40]to punish me so fear by itself is not enough to create
[21:44]that relationship there has to be fear and there has to be
[21:47]hope that's pulling me towards allah yes there are sins but only
[21:51]allah tells me to stay away from them because they're bad for
[21:55]me allah will also what allah will also reward me if i
[21:59]go and i follow his directions just like a job if i
[22:02]have a job if i do my job there's a reward that's
[22:05]the hope but what if i don't do my job there's gonna
[22:08]be fear of what of losing my job of getting fired so
[22:12]i am always between hope and fear do your job you get
[22:15]the reward don't do your job you'll get fired this is how
[22:18]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is with us and that's why the beautiful
[22:22]hadith of imam ali alaihi salam says before that imam ali he
[22:29]says he tells his son in a beautiful hadith about hope and
[22:36]fear he tells him he says that every believer should live with
[22:52]these two thoughts in his mind at all times number one the
[22:56]first point that i should have in my mind is that this
[23:00]is how i should see my good deeds i always say no
[23:03]matter how many good deeds i do always tell yourself what it's
[23:07]not enough always tell yourself it's not enough i should do more
[23:10]even if i've done all the good deeds of the world the
[23:13]imam says tell yourself you've you've not done enough why so you
[23:17]do more this is on one side and on the other side
[23:20]he says at the same time have this thought in your mind
[23:32]that if i commit all the sins of the world all the
[23:36]sins of the world then allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will still forgive
[23:40]me so have hope have hope that if you have created if
[23:43]you have committed all the sins of the world allah will forgive
[23:46]you but also have fear that if you have done all the
[23:50]good deeds yet say what say i have to do more so
[23:54]you see how we keep a balance between hope and fear no
[23:58]matter how many good deeds i do i say i have to
[24:00]do more no matter how many bad deeds i do i say
[24:03]allah is forgiving so that i am always connected with the almighty
[24:06]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala this is the second factor so number one
[24:13]the fear factor number two hope and number three finally the third
[24:17]emotion that we turn to in order to build our relationship with
[24:22]the almighty allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is love and this is the
[24:26]greatest of these three you see excuse me in one famous hadith
[24:32]that many of you have heard imam al sadiq says that there
[24:37]are three types of people the first type of people of believers
[24:43]are those that worship allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because they fear jahannam
[24:48]they fear the fires of hell that's why they worship him because
[24:51]they're afraid the imam says this is the worship of the slaves
[24:57]because all he does he worships just because he's afraid and then
[25:01]he says there's a second group there are those that worship allah
[25:05]subhanahu wa ta'ala just because they want jannah paradise the imam says
[25:10]this is the worship of merchants it's like you're doing a business
[25:15]deal with allah you allah i give you two you give me
[25:18]jannah it's like you're doing a business deal and then he says
[25:22]there's a third type of believer and this type of believer he
[25:27]worships allah because the third group why do they worship allah subhanahu
[25:39]wa ta'ala because they fear the fires of hell because they want
[25:43]the jannah no they worship allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because they see
[25:48]that allah deserves to be worshipped because allah because they love allah
[25:54]subhanahu wa ta'ala they do fear the fires of hell and they
[25:58]do want the jannah but that's not why they're worshipping allah the
[26:01]reason why they're worshipping allah because they love allah because they can't
[26:05]help but worship him because no one is telling them to worship
[26:09]allah but they feel it within them that they're compelled to worship
[26:13]allah because of how much they love allah subhanahu wa ta'ala they
[26:17]can do nothing else they're compelled to do so this is the
[26:21]love factor that helps me build that relationship with my lord and
[26:27]look at ahlul bayt alaihi musalam look at how they worshipped look
[26:31]look at how they worshipped allah subhanahu wa allah you see that
[26:35]imam zainul abideen so beautifully he says in dua abihamzathamali in such
[26:42]a beautiful dua he says look at what the imam look at
[26:54]how he speaks to the imam the imam says you allah if
[26:57]you were to take me on the day of judgment and you
[27:00]were to place me in the fires of hell even though i'm
[27:02]the imam i'm infallible i'm impeccable never did anything haram but let's
[27:06]say for the sake of argument that you you allah the day
[27:09]of judgment you put me in the fires of hell do you
[27:12]know what the imam says how i will react if allah does
[27:15]that to me will allah will the imam complain the imam says
[27:18]if you put me in the fires of hell i will tell
[27:21]all the inmates of hell that i love god that's all i'll
[27:25]do that's the only reaction that you'll find from the imam if
[27:28]allah takes him and puts him in the fires of hell he's
[27:31]not gonna complain he's just gonna tell everyone of how much he
[27:34]loves god basically he's telling allah you allah no matter what you
[27:37]do to me i'm still gonna love you even if you put
[27:40]me in the fires of hell do you see the love that
[27:42]they had of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala it wasn't based on materialism
[27:47]just because allah is gonna take me to heaven i love him
[27:50]even if the imam says i don't want heaven allah puts me
[27:52]in hell i still love him i'm gonna tell everyone of my
[27:55]love to my lord to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and we see
[28:00]in dua kumail how beautifully imam ali alaihi salam how beautifully he
[28:06]speaks to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala he says you allah if you
[28:18]were to take me and burn me in the fires of hell
[28:21]he tells him that i will cry you allah but not because
[28:24]of the pain do you know why the imam says i will
[28:26]cry i will cry because if you put me in the fires
[28:29]of hell that means you do not love me that means you
[28:32]have rejected me that means you don't want me this is why
[28:35]i'm gonna cry because you have rejected me see the love that
[28:39]they had and then he says i will cry every day if
[28:55]i am placed in the fires of hell why because i'm so
[28:58]far from you because you rejected me allah that's why i cry
[29:02]because this is how much the imam loves allah that if allah
[29:06]puts him in hell he's gonna cry because allah found it in
[29:09]that he doesn't love the imam and that's why he burned him
[29:11]now do you see the love do you see that level of
[29:22]love that the imams had for allah but how do i develop
[29:26]that love how can i love allah in that way that even
[29:30]if allah was to take me to the fires of allah i
[29:32]still love him how what do i do to achieve this awareness
[29:37]to achieve this god consciousness one of the best ways dear brothers
[29:42]and sisters to achieve that love of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is
[29:47]to constantly remind yourselves how generous allah is with you how kind
[29:54]allah is with me and how rude and ungrateful i am with
[29:58]allah we read in dua'al iftithaq the imam he speaks about us
[30:04]what does he say he says he says you allah you ask
[30:16]me every day you invite me to join you you invite me
[30:20]to what to your mercy allah is calling us brothers and sisters
[30:24]every day and every night his doors are open he says come
[30:27]and repent i will forgive you i will shower you with my
[30:30]blessings and my mercy all we have to do is what collect
[30:33]all we have to say all we have to do is yes
[30:36]say allah i accept allah's doors are open he's inviting me he's
[30:40]waiting for me and this is allah the king of kings this
[30:44]is the being that created me my lord he's waiting for me
[30:48]but how do we react many of us we're too busy for
[30:51]allah oh no i have to go to my business i have
[30:54]other things to do i have to watch a movie i have
[30:56]to go watch a game allah the king of this world has
[31:00]opened his arms to me and i tell him i have no
[31:02]time for you allah says come i wanna forgive you i tell
[31:05]him i have no time for you i reject him i ignore
[31:09]him the imam says this is how many of us are with
[31:12]allah but then the imam says he says but yet did that
[31:20]prevent allah from further showing me mercy my rudeness did that prevent
[31:26]allah from being kind with me and merciful with me how many
[31:30]sins do we commit brothers and sisters do my do my sins
[31:33]prevent allah subhanahu wa ta'ala from showering me with his blessings it
[31:38]doesn't the more we sin the more kind allah is with us
[31:42]the more we go away from allah the closer he goes to
[31:45]us what could we want more from our lord my dear brothers
[31:47]and sisters as i mentioned in the beginning of the lecture some
[31:52]people you find that they don't commit sins in front of human
[31:55]beings but when in front of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala they have
[31:58]the audacity right in front of him he commits sins do you
[32:01]know why we do that my dear brothers and sisters we're afraid
[32:04]of human beings but we're not afraid of allah do you know
[32:06]why because we know allah won't expose us when we do indecent
[32:10]acts human beings will expose us if i do something that is
[32:14]bad in front of a human being he's gonna go and tell
[32:16]everyone else backbiting what is backbiting is when you see someone has
[32:21]a secret something bad they did in private i go and i
[32:23]expose them this is backbiting it's haram my dear brothers and sisters
[32:27]if i ever hear a secret of a brother or a sister
[32:30]and i know they don't want me to tell anyone else it's
[32:33]haram for me to go and expose them this is one of
[32:35]the great sins in islam so why is it that in front
[32:40]of human beings we don't sin because we know they will expose
[32:43]us why do we sit in front of allah because we know
[32:48]allah allah subhanahu wa ta'ala conceals our mistakes conceals our weaknesses we
[32:54]take advantage of the kindness and of the mercy of allah that's
[32:57]why we disobey him because we know he'll not expose us we
[33:00]know he is tolerant we know he's patient he'll forgive me i
[33:04]will disobey him he tells me come i will forgive you i
[33:07]tell him no no a thousand times but he still says i'm
[33:10]open for you you see how we take advantage of allah subhanahu
[33:13]wa ta'ala's kindness and mercy do you see how rude i am
[33:16]with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala but yet allah still showers me with
[33:21]his mercy he's still patient with me if i just think about
[33:25]this i will begin to love allah how kind he is with
[33:29]me and how ungrateful i am with him in the dua of
[33:32]imam hussein on the day of ashura what do we read brothers
[33:35]and sisters and on the day of arafah i'm sorry the imam
[33:39]he has a beautiful dua he says about allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[33:43]he tells him all that allah does to me is good things
[33:52]he gives me health he gives me life wealth family children education
[33:56]everything what do i give allah back the imam says but i
[34:06]on the other hand i am the one that disobeyed allah i
[34:08]am the one that forgot about allah i am the one that
[34:11]neglected allah that the imam says he says you allah i have
[34:22]never seen such a patient such a kind master that has such
[34:27]a rude ungrateful servant than me allah has the master i am
[34:34]the slave but it's it's we make it seem as if it's
[34:38]the other way around it's as if allah needs me allah says
[34:41]come to forgive so i that i forgive you we tell him
[34:44]no i don't want you what type of a rude servant have
[34:47]i been to and yet no matter how rude i get allah
[34:52]will never there's never a point in which allah says you've done
[34:55]enough bad i won't forgive you never i mentioned this brothers and
[34:58]sisters a few days ago allah says in the holy allah says
[35:08]all you beings all you servants of mine who have done too
[35:12]much bad deeds too much excess too much allah says i close
[35:17]the doors of mercy he says do not despair do not lose
[35:20]hope allah will forgive your sins even if they are as big
[35:26]as the mountains if i think in this way brothers and sisters
[35:31]i will never disobey allah you know why because i'll be ashamed
[35:35]i don't need my father and mother and the sheikh and the
[35:38]sayyid to tell me don't disobey allah my conscience will tell me
[35:41]that i'll be ashamed to disobey allah the next time with all
[35:45]the kindness that he shows me i have the audacity to go
[35:49]and to show him this disobedience and that's why you see imam
[35:54]ali when he speaks about death what does he say about death
[35:58]he says he says do you see how he sees death how
[36:10]much does he love death how much does he yearn for death
[36:14]as much as a child yearns for his mother's milk you see
[36:17]children when they're hungry when they're thirsty how impatient do they get
[36:20]when they want their mother's milk he says this is how i
[36:23]wait for my death because he knows he's gonna meet allah because
[36:28]of his love of allah he wants to go and meet allah
[36:32]he knows that after this life he's going towards allah subhanahu wa
[36:36]ta'ala and that's why he sees it in this way and that's
[36:40]why imam hussein's son was in the same way remember i mentioned
[36:43]the poem of how imam hussein sacrificed everything for he says you
[37:00]allah if you were to destroy me and mutilate my body for
[37:04]your sake if i was to be mutilated for your sake then
[37:10]i would never stop loving you you allah do whatever you want
[37:13]to me i love you that's it there's nothing that allah can
[37:16]do to change that there's nothing that anyone can do to change
[37:18]that that's how much he loves allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and you
[37:23]find that if it wasn't for the sacrifice of imam hussain on
[37:26]the day of ashura if it wasn't for him giving his blood
[37:30]on the day of ashura we we wouldn't be able today to
[37:35]find allah subhanahu wa ta'ala maybe we would have been amongst those
[37:40]extremists like isis and others because if you take ahlul bayt out
[37:44]of islam what do you what's left if it wasn't for imam
[37:48]hussein we wouldn't even know allah subhanahu wa ta'ala it was the
[37:52]sacred blood of imam hussein that preserved islam that we have the
[37:57]honor of knowing who allah is our messenger our imams and the
[38:00]beliefs of our religion and it's through the blessings of these majalis
[38:06]the majalis of abba abdullah al hussain that we have been having
[38:10]for the last ten nights that we are able to preserve and
[38:13]continue what imam husayn started fourteen hundred years ago the values and
[38:18]the principles that imam husayn stood for and he fought for and
[38:22]he died for on the day of ashura this is where we
[38:26]come to uphold them and to plant them deeply within us and
[38:33]this is why brothers and sisters the islamic institute of america and
[38:39]the muslim youth connection who have sponsored these last ten nights of
[38:45]this wonderful program they have come together to establish a permanent venue
[38:53]for you you see these majalis that we had for the last
[38:59]ten nights were very successful inshallah allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is pleased
[39:05]with us are pleased with us but as but as you see
[39:09]this is temporary this is a hall that we've rented and inshallah
[39:14]we yearn that we can have a permanent place a place that
[39:18]we can join after muharram a place that we can go all
[39:22]the time and have our guidance over there now you might say
[39:27]that that we have enough centers islamic centers in this community and
[39:34]we don't need any more islamic centers two points about that brothers
[39:38]and sisters number one the first point is that first of all
[39:43]we should never ever say these words that we have too many
[39:46]islamic centers in our community because the more islamic centers that we
[39:50]have the better it is for us it's a blessing it's a
[39:54]that we have islamic centers i have been to so many communities
[39:58]here in the us brothers and sisters cities they don't even have
[40:00]one place they wish they had one two three or five places
[40:03]to go they have to go inside a basement of someone and
[40:06]they could only hold their programs over there they said people in
[40:09]dearborn are so lucky they have five six 10 places to go
[40:13]never say we have too many places do you know in the
[40:16]city in the city of new york just the city of new
[40:20]york do you know how many synagogues the jews have there the
[40:24]jews so little four five million jews in america but they're so
[40:29]powerful how many synagogues do they have in new york city over
[40:32]1,000 synagogues did they think that that was too much did any
[40:37]one of them say we have too many synagogues no because they
[40:40]understood that in order for them to preserve their jewish identity in
[40:44]america they need their synagogues 1,000 synagogues just in one city and
[40:49]you see in dearborn and dearborn heights just these two cities small
[40:53]cities there's over 100 churches so if you had five six places
[40:57]we say this is too much it's never too much brothers and
[40:59]sisters the more we have the better diversity i can go to
[41:03]more than one place so that's number one and number two brothers
[41:06]and sisters a religious a religious establishment isn't just the building isn't
[41:13]just the exterior building there are throughout the world many establishments many
[41:18]religious establishments they're very beautiful from the outside but it's the inside
[41:22]that what counts it's the it's the services and the programs that
[41:26]are held inside that count they might they may not necessarily give
[41:30]the community the programs that they need and that's why it's not
[41:34]just the building it's what happens inside and it's what the foundation
[41:40]and the establishment represents and that's why brothers and sisters the like
[41:48]i mentioned the the muslim youth connection and the the muslim youth
[42:03]connection and the islamic institute of america they have come together to
[42:08]establish a new place brothers and sisters but there are four important
[42:13]goals and aims that we have in establishing this new place and
[42:17]i want you to pay close attention brothers and sisters to these
[42:20]four aims and goals that we have number one this new place
[42:24]that we wish inshallah to establish and inshallah to have the first
[42:31]and most important goal and aim of this new institution is the
[42:35]youth you see any community any islamic organization that does not focus
[42:42]on the youth will not succeed in the long run because the
[42:46]first and second generations they're gonna die out sooner or later twenty
[42:51]thirty years they're gonna die and it's gonna be the youth that
[42:54]are gonna be the today's youth are gonna be tomorrow's leaders so
[42:58]if the youth when they grew up they did they did not
[43:01]grow up in an islamic environment they were not able to have
[43:06]a place where they can go and learn about islam a place
[43:09]where they can connect to relate to and understand and be and
[43:13]be educated about islam if they did not have that opportunity those
[43:17]youth will be lost and especially when they grow up they won't
[43:20]have a muslim identity and that's why you find there may be
[43:24]many programs there may be many centers there are good places good
[43:28]centers but what's important is that the youth there must be programs
[43:33]that are targeted towards the youth the new generation the third fourth
[43:37]generations that grew up in america that speak english that relate to
[43:43]this society not the society of the first and second generations and
[43:48]this is what the muslim youth connection is bringing and has been
[43:51]bringing for so many years you see why is it that we
[43:56]focus so much on the youth it's because we want to preserve
[43:59]our youth we want them to grow up with an islamic awareness
[44:03]with a strong muslim identity you'd be surprised you'd be amazed how
[44:07]much of our youth are are getting lost my dear brothers and
[44:09]sisters i travel so much in the us you'd be amazed how
[44:13]many of our youth are becoming atheists so many mothers young guys
[44:18]they come and tell me my brother's become an atheist why because
[44:21]he has nowhere to turn to he has misconceptions about religion and
[44:24]god he has nowhere to he comes to they tell me he
[44:27]comes to the center he sees it's in arabic it's in urdu
[44:30]it's in persian he can't relate with the scholar he can't relate
[44:33]with the program he says i don't want religion they begin to
[44:36]disbelieve in allah he loses the muslim identity or you find other
[44:40]young ones you'd be surprised how many of them they go after
[44:43]drugs and crimes and immorality because they have nowhere else to turn
[44:47]to in order for them that void that's within them they can't
[44:50]fill it elsewhere there's no programs that they can relate to and
[44:54]likewise we have some youth on this extreme and we have youths
[44:57]that go to the other extreme that become extremists unfortunately they join
[45:01]isis and other groups like that the nyc is what is what
[45:05]preserves the identity the moderate identity of our youth my dear brothers
[45:09]and sisters so that when they grow up they know that i'm
[45:12]a muslim a moderate muslim a practicing muslim and they know their
[45:16]beliefs and you find that the nyc and before that the yma
[45:22]since in its inception twenty years ago it was never just a
[45:27]place of worship a place that we just come and you know
[45:31]we read dua we pray and we just listen to a lecture
[45:34]this is not what the m y the nyc and the y
[45:38]m a used to be about it's much more than that the
[45:42]nyc brothers and sisters is a path it's a path that focuses
[45:46]on diversity and inclusion everyone is welcomed no matter what background you're
[45:53]from you're welcome to join our youth movement no matter which country
[45:58]you're from which region you're from you're a muslim you come this
[46:01]is the teachings of the quran allah says it doesn't matter that
[46:04]which tribe you're from which region you're from the best of you
[46:10]in the eyes of allah are the ones that have the highest
[46:13]taqwa this is that what the myc is teaching our youth that
[46:16]no matter where you come from you all are muslims and the
[46:21]best amongst you are those that are the closest to allah subhanahu
[46:25]wa ta'ala the mic tries to ensure that our youth grow up
[46:29]as brothers and sisters that's how they see each other not this
[46:32]person is from this area i'm from an as long as i'm
[46:35]a muslim i'm your brother and you're my sister and we grow
[46:39]up as one ummah in this way and that's why you find
[46:44]the myc brothers and sisters for so many years it has touched
[46:48]the lives of so many youths you find it's been a place
[46:52]where our youth can turn to and trust any time they had
[46:56]problems or they were in crisis you'd be surprised how many youth
[47:00]in our communities when they had a problem in their life or
[47:05]they were faced with a crisis instead of going to their parents
[47:11]they would come to the yma before or now the nyc you
[47:14]would be surprised how many stories there are they don't go to
[47:17]their own parents they come to the nyc and the yma because
[47:21]they know this is a place that they will be welcomed they
[47:24]will be embraced their parents did not embrace them but the yma
[47:28]and the nyc they embraced them now i'll just share a very
[47:31]short story there was a young girl that used to come to
[47:35]the before it used to be the yma the yma programs and
[47:39]she used to attend all the programs and one day she decided
[47:44]to wear the hijab she would not wear the hijab one day
[47:47]she decided to wear the hijab what happens her father and mother
[47:51]they're not very practicing muslims they're good people but they're not practicing
[47:55]they're more cultural than they are religious so what happens is they
[47:58]tell her you're not wearing the hijab it's so unfortunate that sometimes
[48:02]you know there are some parents that you know they wish their
[48:04]children go towards allah subhanahu wa ta'ala they wish their daughters wear
[48:08]the hijab but they can't but unfortunately you have other parents their
[48:11]children decide to wear the hijab but they discourage them so these
[48:15]parents they tell this young girl who's coming to the programs if
[48:18]you keep on wearing the hijab if you keep on wearing the
[48:22]hijab we're gonna kick you out of our house we're not gonna
[48:24]spend on you you have to pay the bills and this is
[48:27]how they put pressure so she comes to one of the programs
[48:30]one day and she bursts into tears and she begins to say
[48:34]i don't know where to go if i did not have the
[48:36]myc why or would i go my parents wanna kick me out
[48:38]because i wanna wear the hijab you find the members of this
[48:43]organization they go with her and they speak to her mother and
[48:47]father and not only are they able to convince them that she
[48:51]should wear a hijab even the mother she's convinced to to wear
[48:54]the hijab where do you find this brothers and sisters in this
[48:57]country such support for our youth and for so many years there
[49:02]has been the beautiful hajj group so many years the nyc and
[49:06]the yma have provided opportunities for our youth to go to hajj
[49:09]and discover themselves everything is in english the guidance is in english
[49:14]the teachings are in english so they can connect they can understand
[49:17]ziyara groups just like i mentioned a few nights ago there's a
[49:20]ziyara group ziyara trip planned for december i encourage all of you
[49:25]to come brothers and sisters everything is in english you don't find
[49:29]this too often all the lectures all the guidance is given in
[49:32]english ziyara to karbala to najaf to masheh sainab brothers and sisters
[49:36]register this is for you but like i said brothers and sisters
[49:42]the m y c the m y c needs a permanent place
[49:46]for every week they have a friday program for the youth with
[49:50]all sorts of activities but every week they have to rent a
[49:54]different place sometimes they don't find a place to rent so they
[49:57]need a permanent venue they need some place where they can always
[50:00]refer to so the youth know anytime they're troubled they can go
[50:04]to and they will find help anytime they have questions from a
[50:07]scholar from anyone they can go and they can ask there's absolutely
[50:10]no shame nothing to be embarrassed of but in order brothers and
[50:14]sisters in order to make this dream true this is where we
[50:17]need your help your kind donations and your contributions to make this
[50:23]dream possible for your community so this is number one the youth
[50:27]i'll quickly mention the the other points number two the second aim
[50:30]brothers and sisters of the nyc and the iia is to focus
[50:35]on the non muslims yesterday i spoke about islamophobia in america and
[50:39]how it's on the rise and i said a major reason to
[50:42]that is because of the ignorance of americans because they don't know
[50:45]anything about islam we don't educate them this is why the nyc
[50:49]and the iia believe that this gap must be bridged we have
[50:54]to have interfaith dialogue we have to have outreach we have to
[50:57]invite them and tell them we have to have a place where
[51:00]it's welcoming to the non muslims brother and sisters sometimes our masajid
[51:04]are only catered for us for muslims when a non muslim comes
[51:08]he doesn't feel welcome at all and this is what we want
[51:10]to ensure that if there is any non muslim that has misconceptions
[51:14]about islam has questions about islam there's a place you can go
[51:17]to instead of going to fox fox news and hearing their propaganda
[51:21]come to this place and there will be professionals to greet them
[51:24]to welcome them and to answer all their questions this is the
[51:28]second goal and the third aim and goal of the myc and
[51:33]the iia is to establish an islamic college you see we have
[51:37]so many bright talented intelligent young men and women in our communities
[51:42]and they masha'allah know how to speak so well very talented the
[51:46]only thing they need is what is an islamic education that's all
[51:51]that they need and many of them they yearn to go to
[51:54]the hausa to study in the middle east but they can't there's
[51:57]too many obstacles it's not feasible to everyone so instead of sending
[52:01]them to the hausa in those countries why not bring a mini
[52:04]hausa to here in our community and this is one of the
[52:07]goals of the myc is to what establish a small islamic college
[52:12]so that our youth can go and get educated and that they
[52:15]can defend islam in this country so that they can put an
[52:19]end to this islamophobia so that they can go on shows like
[52:22]like fox news with bill o'reilly and sean hannity and they can
[52:27]refute their allegations and they can speak and defend islam this is
[52:31]number three and number four finally the fourth goal of this new
[52:35]establishment that inshaallah with your with allah's help and your donations your
[52:40]kind donations will be inshallah by next year will be a dream
[52:45]come true by next year the fourth goal is to have a
[52:48]media center a media center where informative tv shows are produced about
[52:55]islam catered to both muslims and shows to non muslims and inshallah
[53:00]one day we can have an islamic satellite channel instead of having
[53:03]the non muslims to come to our houses we can go in
[53:06]their houses and we can have a satellite channel that will disseminate
[53:10]the message of islam a media center that can have a huge
[53:13]archive of lectures that our youth can come you wanna hear a
[53:16]lecture about marriage we have so many lectures you wanna hear about
[53:19]quran these lectures you wanna hear about ahlul bayt these lectures and
[53:22]so on and so forth but like i said many times in
[53:25]order to do all this work brothers and sisters we need your
[53:29]help and your support and tonight is the day of ashura it's
[53:33]all about sacrifice these ten nights are all about sacrifice imam hussain
[53:37]gave everything for for us so that we can gather and we
[53:41]can remember allah and we can worship allah and we can understand
[53:46]our values and teachings so that's why brothers and sisters we need
[53:51]your contributions we need your help and we have we're looking for
[53:55]a place inshallah we're negotiating on certain places that inshallah potentially we
[54:00]may buy them but we need your help and that's why whoever
[54:03]leaves the english program tonight i ask you brothers and sisters you
[54:06]will be given a pledge form and i ask you to donate
[54:11]generously i don't have to beg you brothers and sisters with everything
[54:14]that i said we we should already have understood the need for
[54:17]such a place for such a beautiful place for our youth and
[54:22]for the muslim community so before you leave if you decide to
[54:26]stay for the arabic insha'allah there will be my father insha'allah samahtasayd
[54:30]hassan he will speak further about this but if you decide to
[54:34]leave take a pledge form and give as little as you can
[54:37]if allah has given you wealth give 50,000 if you can 10,000
[54:41]5,000 1,000 five 100 give anything that you can because it's these
[54:46]small donations that are small in our eyes but great in the
[54:49]eyes of allah that will build our community and i just remind
[54:53]you that you can count it as hummus you could count it
[54:56]towards hummus that's number one and number two you can count it
[55:00]towards your taxes it's tax deductible because association has a five zero
[55:06]one c nonprofit status so you could you could hit three birds
[55:11]with one stone gift for the cause of allah number one receive
[55:14]the reward number two it's tax exempt and number three count it
[55:19]as kumuz so i ask you brothers and sisters to donate generously
[55:23]this is the that we will all benefit brothers and sisters the
[55:28]the prophet says that when the human being dies he will not
[55:31]benefit but from three things and one of them is what sadaqa
[55:35]jariya when you give a sadaqa a charity that continues forever every
[55:39]time someone does a good deed everyone and anyone is educated in
[55:42]that place you will receive ajib so before you leave i ask
[55:46]you brothers and sisters to take a pledge form and pledge as
[55:51]much as you can inshaallah allah will give you in the best
[55:55]ways now brothers and sisters let us turn to karbala the last
[56:05]night imam hussein is with his family members the last night the
[56:10]men are with the women let us turn to karbala and let
[56:14]us turn to the youngest soldier of imam hussein abdullahi razee this
[56:20]six month old baby of imam hussein allahu akbar you see imam
[56:26]hussein this is such a beautiful example that i heard imam hussein
[56:29]on the day of ashura he's like a gardener and every gardener
[56:34]what does he do he goes and he picks flowers a beautiful
[56:37]flower from here a beautiful flower from there and then after he
[56:41]has a bundle of flowers he looks for a final flower an
[56:45]unopened flower a small bud he takes that bud and he crowns
[56:50]the bundle of flower the bundle of flowers with that bud imam
[56:54]hussein is like that gardener he has picked those beautiful flowers those
[57:00]companions of his that he sacrificed for the sake of allah subhanahu
[57:03]wa ta'ala but now the imam is searching for that small bud
[57:08]that he can crown his sacrifices with and that's none other than
[57:12]abdullahi rabbi his little baby it was the night it was it
[57:17]was the day of ashura all of the companions were killed all
[57:21]of their relatives were killed imam hussein had no relatives left he
[57:26]felt lonely he went on a hill and he cried out is
[57:45]there anyone that wants to protect the grandson of rasulullah is there
[57:49]no one that wants to defend the woman of rasulullah no one
[57:54]answers the mother of ali al azhar abdullah radia rabab she says
[57:59]when i heard my husband hussein make that call she says this
[58:03]little baby his hands was in the swaddle all the sudden when
[58:07]he heard the cry of his father he took his hands out
[58:10]of the swaddle as if he's saying father you still have one
[58:13]soldier left i may be small i may be irrelevant but i'm
[58:17]still here for you my dear father hussain imam al hussain he
[58:24]comes to farewell his family members he comes to tell them the
[58:29]final goodbyes because he has no more supporters left he has to
[58:33]go and fight all by himself sayyid azainab his sister tells him
[58:40]my dear brother hussein before you go please take this little baby
[58:45]of yours to the enemies ask them to give him a few
[58:48]drops of water because he is dying of thirst i ask you
[58:52]why is it that zaynab brought this baby why wasn't the mother
[58:55]do you know why because the mother could no longer bear look
[58:58]at his little face because he was moaning he had absolutely no
[59:03]energy she could no longer look at at his suffering and that's
[59:06]why she was away from him zaynab had to bring him to
[59:10]imam hussein imam hussein he takes this little baby and he goes
[59:18]towards the enemies but this time he goes while he is walking
[59:21]he doesn't go on his horse that means i don't want to
[59:24]fight you i have to tell you something they see all the
[59:27]sudden imam al hussein alaihi salaam he arrives and he has something
[59:33]with him what is it is it a weapon is it a
[59:36]sword all of a sudden he uncovers his little baby boy and
[59:44]then he raises him high so that everyone can see him he
[59:47]tells them he says you have killed all my men all my
[60:01]companions this is all i have left this little baby and then
[60:05]he says he says his mother has no more milk to give
[60:17]him please take him and give him water don't give me the
[60:21]water you take him and give him the water all the sudden
[60:24]the enemies they split some of them they say let's give him
[60:27]water others they say no let's not give him water and then
[60:30]omar ibn sa'an says he says and the quarrel while imam hussein
[60:44]is waiting for the water all the sudden he notices a three
[60:48]headed arrow comes and it pierces the neck of his little baby
[60:55]you see one of the companions of the imams by the name
[60:58]of al muqtar he went after the killers of imam hussein and
[61:02]once he arrested this man harumala that killed the baby he told
[61:06]him did how did you have the heart to kill this little
[61:09]baby didn't it break your heart he told him yes one thing
[61:12]broke my heart he said when i threw that arrow on the
[61:15]neck of the little baby i saw him that he was so
[61:18]afraid he began to hug his father hussein because of the fear
[61:22]he says he broke my heart when he did that allahu akbar
[61:27]imam al hussein he sees his little baby has been slayed he
[61:35]takes the blood of his little baby and he throws it towards
[61:38]the sky and he says what gives me patience and consolation is
[61:53]that allah is seeing all of this what gives me patience is
[61:57]allah is seeing this oppression they are killing a little innocent baby
[62:01]and then imam hussein goes back to the giant so qaina's daughter
[62:09]comes out she says my dear father hussein did you feed my
[62:14]little baby brother water and you brought me some water as well
[62:18]he brings out the baby tells her my dear daughter take this
[62:29]little baby brothers and sisters it is the night of ashura let
[62:51]us raise our hands and supplicate to allah that allah may accept
