When does the fasting end?
“Then complete the fast till night.” What is the definition of night here? Is it sunset or maghrib (around 15 minutes after sunset)? Shia scholars are divided into two groups:
1. The majority say that you cannot break your fast at sunset and that you have to wait until the redness in the eastern sky (horizon) disappears (at the time of maghrib).
2. You can break your fast when the sun sets, and ‘the night’ mentioned in the verse is just a precaution to make sure that you know the sun has set (as people didn’t use calculations at that time and some people who live in the mountains or hills cannot see the sunset).

Scholars of the first group argue that when the sun sets, it really can’t be called night. However, when the redness in the eastern sky has disappeared, it’s much darker and it can be called night. Hence scholars say that we should follow the Qur’an and make sure that we break our fast at night (Maghrib). They have also cited Hadiths that command us to wait after sunset.
