[5:46]praises be to allah creator of mankind master of the day of
[5:53]judgment respected brothers and sisters in islam first and foremost i would
[6:00]like to congratulate each and every one of you our respected malaya
[6:06]and ulama as we remember in these days the auspicious births of
[6:20]his grandfathers and of course the moon of banu hashem his uncle
[6:32]and second i would like to uh thank the brothers and sisters
[6:38]the committee and the lyf for giving me this opportunity and this
[6:40]chance to be able to speak with you even though we are
[6:45]not uh you know physically present together to give these lectures insha'allah
[6:50]we can both benefit and gain some knowledge virtually just as you
[6:55]know the way everything is moving in this time and in this
[7:00]pandemic so insha'allah we can gain knowledge together as we commemorate the
[7:06]birth of the moons of the month of sha'an in these blessed
[7:11]nights god willing we will tackle the topic in which imam and
[7:16]hussain salam gave great importance for as he would constantly allude to
[7:22]it in his sermons in his speeches and most importantly in his
[7:27]actions in fact the sacrifices of these three individuals we just mentioned
[7:37]was nothing but a practical application of what we will discuss that
[7:42]which is the in other words the knowledge in the master of
[7:50]the creator and the master of the universe why were we brought
[7:55]into this realm of existence what is the purpose of our life
[8:00]why did allah create us what is the goal these are frequently
[8:04]asked questions that automatically come to our minds which originate from our
[8:12]primordial nature now the answer to these questions lies in the holy
[8:18]quran to be specific in verse number 56 of surat in where
[8:26]allah and mankind for nothing other than my worship for worshiping me
[8:39]the word here in arabic language means worship is to worship now
[8:52]our sixth imam imam jafar regarding the precise meaning of this word
[9:04]in this context knowing him for that we see in a number
[9:35]of traditions in the hadith of the salaam some like the famous
[9:42]tradition narrated by amir muhammadin and where he says the first step
[9:50]in our religion is acknowledging him acknowledging him who do we mean
[9:58]here allah subhanahu wa imam salam in many different uh narrations one
[10:04]of them he says he created the people he only created the
[10:12]people so that they might know him and when they know him
[10:16]they worship him and when they worship him they become needless of
[10:22]worshipping others by his worship this is the true ibadah of the
[10:27]mu'min so the basis of our relationship with allah subhanahu wa tahadah
[10:32]is built on this maharifa unknowing him now the more we know
[10:39]him the more we're able to connect with him the more we
[10:42]know him the more we're able to fear him and the more
[10:48]we fear him we begin to do that which he likes and
[10:51]stay away from that which he dislikes which is forbidden in the
[10:56]shariah for us to have a better theoretical and practical understanding of
[11:03]this marifa we will speak about it in a number of points
[11:06]insha'allah throughout tonight's discussion the first what is according to the arabic
[11:12]language and according to the spiritual understanding two what are some of
[11:18]the practical steps one can take in order to know allah subhanahu
[11:21]wa ta'ala and three after we know him after we know allah
[11:26]how can i reach him let us begin has two conventional understandings
[11:35]one which is linguistic according to the people of the arabic language
[11:40]and one which is spiritual according to the people of arfan to
[11:45]the mystics to the in terms of its linguistic meaning we see
[11:52]that there is a clear difference between the two words even though
[12:00]in english they are often both understood as knowing but there is
[12:06]a quite difference between the two is defined as that image which
[12:13]is drawn in your mind whilst is the implementation of that image
[12:20]on that which is present in your mind what do i mean
[12:27]by that let me give you an example when you show me
[12:31]the image of someone and you tell me his or her name
[12:34]is so-and-so when i look at this image it becomes manifested in
[12:41]my mind and just like a computer i take a copy of
[12:44]this image and i save it so now it's in my memory
[12:47]it's in my hard drive it's in my brain it's in the
[12:51]mind however even though you told me this person's name and i
[12:55]have his image saved in my mind i still don't know who
[12:59]exactly he is or more about them or what does he do
[13:03]for his living or what family he belongs to what are some
[13:08]of the traits and characteristics he embodies or she embodies when i
[13:15]am able to add to that picture i have in the back
[13:17]of my mind by completing this file with the information with the
[13:21]sufficient information i need into having a better understanding of that individual
[13:25]that's when i ascend to a higher level that higher level that
[13:30]extra step i take in knowing that individual is what is known
[13:35]as when i have a complete understanding of the person or the
[13:42]idea this is the linguistic definition or meaning you could say of
[13:47]maharitha now according to the mystics and according to the people of
[13:50]uh arfan as they describe them in the arabic language they say
[13:58]that maharifa in spiritual journeying is the uncovering of the reality of
[14:07]the nephes to remove the veils to remove the barriers which by
[14:14]doing so you are able to feel the presence of allah subhanahu
[14:21]wa'ta'ala within your hearts and this is what many of our traditions
[14:25]point out to just like the famous hadith i am sure many
[14:30]of you have heard before when he says the one who knows
[14:38]himself or herself knows allah a lot of different religions faiths school
[14:45]of thoughts focus immensely on the idea of knowing the self discovering
[14:49]our reality and understanding who we are as creations and whether we
[14:56]want to say it or not whether we believe it or not
[14:59]iman or faith is a natural drive deep down in the very
[15:07]essence of us human beings here we see that the human being
[15:11]in his or her nature have a number of drives or forces
[15:15]of desire within them the desire for love the desire for food
[15:21]the desire to drink the desire to know that which is unknown
[15:26]the desire for wealth for gaining money for doing uh good for
[15:29]receiving good for staying away from everything which is evil everything which
[15:34]can affect you in a negative way all these desires the human
[15:37]being has inside of him and mostly or most of the time
[15:41]these uh desires we fulfill them as human beings now whether we
[15:48]fulfill them in a proper manner in islamic terms in a halal
[15:57]way or we fulfill them in a improper manner in a haram
[16:00]way that is a complete different story but for the most part
[16:02]these desires and forces lead us to fulfilling this uh emotions and
[16:09]feelings we have deep inside us now there's one desire deep within
[16:17]us that we may not pay attention to but it is within
[16:20]us as human beings it lives with us and it affects us
[16:23]and that feeling brothers and sisters is that there is an ultimate
[16:33]perfection there is something known as and there is something known as
[16:40]ultimate goodness ultimate perfection and ultimate goodness this feeling of this power
[16:49]or strength that surrounds us that is near us this feeling this
[16:53]desire is on our very essence and we sometimes may not pay
[17:00]attention to it even though it exists within us for that reason
[17:04]allah sent down the prophets and the messengers in order to awaken
[17:09]us from our slumber in order to uh show us that this
[17:15]feeling this innate uh desire allah azzawajal gave you can lead you
[17:22]towards him can take you somewhere that's why in nashville in the
[17:28]very first sermon he says the messengers and the prophets so that
[17:47]they can awaken this inner self so they can recall the people
[17:55]to remember the bounties and the blessings and the name of allah
[18:00]in philosophy they say there is two types of knowledge and i
[18:07]want you to focus here brothers and sisters there's one type of
[18:13]knowledge which is referred to or explained as attained or acquired knowledge
[18:18]and the academic terminology for it is uli and there's another type
[18:27]of knowledge it is referred to academically as something that is reached
[18:35]through the hearts it's knowledge that you have inside of you now
[18:39]what is the difference between the two and it's important to know
[18:44]the specific uh differences between these two types of knowledge number one
[18:52]al-faduri does not require what they call a vasudeva what does means
[18:58]a collection a channel for the individual to understand and to comprehend
[19:05]and to have a better understanding of that idea or of that
[19:10]person or whatever it may be when we speak about the knowledge
[19:17]that is within you it is not something that needs a link
[19:23]it's in you its name means presence it means that it is
[19:27]present inside of you like hunger for instance like love no one
[19:32]can tell you uh how to love or no one can teach
[19:36]you when to love or no one can tell you if you're
[19:39]hungry or not you feel this urge this want to eat you're
[19:43]craving a nice chocolate cake you're craving a pizza you know no
[19:46]one can come up to you and tell you that's not true
[19:49]you're not hungry no i'm hungry i feel it i want to
[19:53]eat this is something you feel within you this is present on
[19:57]the other hand is something which isn't available in itself rather a
[20:04]picture of it is presented to you or a description of it
[20:10]is presented to you to you and through that description or that
[20:13]image you are able to fully comprehend and understand what it is
[20:18]or what it means let me give you an example right now
[20:21]you go on a vacation well obviously in the pandemic you can
[20:25]let's say in the future or if you've been on a vacation
[20:30]before let's say you went to france to paris and you visited
[20:34]the eiffel tower and you took a tour as a tourist in
[20:41]the eiffel tower you you know looked around you saw how it
[20:45]is this uh this attraction that's you know famous for years and
[20:48]years you went to the highest levels and you were able to
[20:52]enjoy the nice scenery now you have a better understanding as to
[20:59]what this place is or what it represents or how it feels
[21:04]to be in that specific location because you've been there you have
[21:08]that image presented to you and you save that image because the
[21:11]mind saves this image now your knowledge of this eiffel tower of
[21:16]this experience is not something that was originally within you you weren't
[21:23]born with this image of the eiffel tower inside of your hearts
[21:25]later on through life you traveled you read about it you've seen
[21:29]it etcetera you did you know the necessary steps and through a
[21:33]link through allah you were able to have a better understanding of
[21:40]it the instinctive feeling of allah in other words the existence of
[21:45]allah if we were to if i were to ask you a
[21:50]question from what type of knowledge or what type of elim can
[21:53]it be classified under the answer to that and i'm sure that
[21:58]uh many of you are able to answer this correctly it is
[22:03]it is something present within you inside of you it doesn't require
[22:07]a picture it doesn't require allah it doesn't require a description yes
[22:12]to better understand it you need that description you need more knowledge
[22:15]about it but generally speaking it's there you feel it through your
[22:20]instinct you feel that absolute power you feel that uh existence of
[22:26]allah within your hearts you can see allah subhanahu wa you can
[22:32]see the image of allah you know you might question me here
[22:37]as human beings what we can see is limited there's certain boundaries
[22:42]there are certain things we cannot see the naked eye cannot be
[22:47]able to see however if we go to some of the hadith
[22:52]like the hadith by amir the hearts can feel and understand the
[23:11]presence the magnitude the greatness of allah subhanahu wa so the amir
[23:17]is telling us that you are able to feel allah in your
[23:24]hearts within for that one time one of the companions of imam
[23:29]jafar he came towards him and he asks him yep rasulillah i
[23:32]have a question for you i would like to see allah azzawajal
[23:36]i want to feel his presence and the sense of you know
[23:39]the second meaning we define the the types of knowledge i want
[23:45]to feel that the presence of god within me how can i
[23:46]do so can you lead me to him can you awaken something
[23:50]in me can you teach me if this feeling i have uh
[23:54]how do i take it out of my heart and how to
[24:01]i uh apply it he asks him a question so he makes
[24:07]this scenario and he asked this person have you ever traveled in
[24:11]a ship and in the middle of the ocean roaming the seas
[24:16]in the water something happened and the ship was about to drown
[24:25]and it was about to sink and you didn't have anyone that
[24:30]can help you and you do not know how to swim fast
[24:33]the everything uh you know you have no other options it's just
[24:40]you alone have you ever been in such a scenario in a
[24:43]circumstance like that this person answers the imam and the imam obviously
[24:46]knows that he has that's why he's asking him the question the
[24:50]imam the or the this companion tells him yes the imam tells
[24:56]him when you are in such situation what did you do did
[25:01]you feel something in your heart did you call anyone listen to
[25:05]the answer of this person he says that yes when i was
[25:12]in such states when i felt that it's the end of the
[25:16]world for me that no one can save me i felt this
[25:21]strength this power this energy which is mysterious which is unknown i
[25:26]didn't know what it is but i truly in the deep of
[25:33]my heart i knew one thing that it is the only power
[25:36]that can save me from drowning what is that that imam salam
[25:45]that feeling towards that power that energy that strength whatever you want
[25:49]to call it is allah subhanahu wa allah is a feeling which
[25:56]is innate which is steadfast in your nephes that's why in theology
[26:00]some of the theologians they use this innate nature or what they
[26:06]call it in arabic as dalil al-fitra as one of the strongest
[26:09]proofs to prove the existence of allah you know sometimes we do
[26:15]not need sophisticated proofs and too much logic in order to prove
[26:20]the existence of allah depending on who your audience are sometimes you
[26:24]need to use such uh logic and proof however if we were
[26:30]to be honest with ourselves the strongest of these proofs is what
[26:37]the fitra what our innate nature leads us towards that's why imam
[26:42]al-humaini in many of his writings he says that this innate feeling
[26:48]is the proof to the existence of god and imam al-hussein in
[26:55]one of the beautiful he says when have you ever allah disappeared
[27:08]or haven't been present in this universe for there to be a
[27:14]need aslan to prove your existence and to prove that you are
[27:22]present between us so this is the first point brothers and sisters
[27:24]the difference between and difference between the different types of and we're
[27:33]able to take from this or the feeling of this absolute perfection
[27:39]and absolute goodness is something deep within the hearts of the human
[27:45]beings this is the first point the second point in our discussion
[27:48]is that what are some of the tips that a person can
[27:54]take in knowing his or her nephes in order to place your
[27:57]foot in the right path to reach allah through the heart like
[28:02]we know allah is present in the hearts how do i how
[28:10]do i fully comprehend and fully understand on a practical level how
[28:16]do i know allah in a better sense now when hearing this
[28:22]question one might say well it's easy allah azzawajal or for every
[28:30]effect there's a cause and we are creations so we need a
[28:34]creator you know this computer in front of me this building in
[28:36]front of you did not just come out of nowhere it didn't
[28:41]always exist it needed and inventor who invented this computer and a
[28:48]company which produced uh this computer and which distributed it to the
[28:53]people and then i bought it from a shop so there's a
[28:58]whole process as how this computer reached my hands so for every
[29:01]effect there is a cause then it's easy as a human being
[29:08]uh i am what they call narciss i am i am a
[29:11]cause i am an effect sorry which needs a cause and that
[29:16]cause is god this is allah and even though this is the
[29:22]uh obviously the correct way and this is the first step one
[29:27]needs to take in order to understand who allah is and we
[29:32]said allah knowing allah through your number one because we need to
[29:39]have certainly when it uh in our belief system and in our
[29:42]creed in our it's not like in focus i follow a certain
[29:47]margin x or y in order to take the from and apply
[29:52]them uh and practice them in my day-to-day life so there's someone
[29:57]who does this research and who you know puts in the hours
[30:00]and the hard work to you know come up with this conclusion
[30:02]and then it's up to me to follow and it's wonderful for
[30:07]me to follow in fact i do not follow someone it is
[30:13]not permissible to follow someone i need to reach that certainty through
[30:17]through proof and through logic by my own decision by my choice
[30:23]not through force not through power just because maja x believes in
[30:26]allah and believes in prophethood and believes in the william then i
[30:31]believe it doesn't work that way i need to reach the truth
[30:35]but how can i reach the truth what are some of the
[30:38]tips that can help me in order to reach the certainty and
[30:43]in order to have a clear vision of my faith and my
[30:49]understanding in the almighty allah the first step and it's probably the
[30:53]most crucial of steps is for the human being to realize the
[30:58]end points or in other words the final destination how do we
[31:06]reach this conclusion we can realize it by reflecting in the verses
[31:11]of the holy quran the quran tells us that the human being
[31:18]travels to allah subhanahu wa in this journey of life without realization
[31:26]for example he says in one of the verses indeed you are
[31:41]laboring laboring for what to make some big bucks to build yourself
[31:47]a fortune to buy a nice car to buy yourself a lamborghini
[31:51]or a mansion in beverly hills no of course not and if
[31:59]you believe that this is the reality behind us working and striving
[32:03]in this life then you are totally mistaken because there's a continuation
[32:06]for this verse allah says you are laboring toward your lord with
[32:20]great exertion you are soon about to meet him the day will
[32:26]come the meeting will arrive where is this meeting brothers and sisters
[32:29]it is it is on the day of judgement consumerism and western
[32:38]ideologies is what make us reckon that we are traveling and moving
[32:45]forward in this dunya to reach a high status and to become
[32:49]millionaires but in reality millionaires in our actions is what we should
[32:56]aim to become and we should make that our goals because in
[33:00]the end of the day we are going to pass away we
[33:05]are temporary in this dunya we are visiting this dunya it's a
[33:10]small journey few years 50 60 70 100 150 years how much
[33:12]are you gonna live in the end you're going to die and
[33:16]your body is going to decompose and what is going to remain
[33:19]is your spirit is your nephes and this memphis of yours the
[33:27]way allah holds you accountable is for the actions you perform the
[33:32]one who is best in his actions or her actions will be
[33:36]victorious and will succeed and will reach them and the one who
[33:38]isn't will fail and that failure is big because that failure the
[33:46]consequences he tells us that the final destination is with him to
[34:00]your lord alone is the ultimate return of all things we are
[34:06]from allah we are creations of allah and to allah we return
[34:11]the creations return to the creator that's why we say in the
[34:21]quran this verse which is very important for us to recall whenever
[34:26]we are facing difficulties whenever we are going through a tragedy or
[34:29]a tribulation in life to remember to recite this yes it might
[34:35]be difficult yes you know it might be painful this loss or
[34:42]this uh tragedy whatever it may be however in the end you
[34:47]know this is not where everything falls your final destination is in
[34:54]years to come or in days to come only allah knows your
[34:59]destination your final destination is with the almighty allah's palate so in
[35:04]reality we are traveling towards him our end is with him but
[35:10]what is important for us is to consciously be aware of this
[35:15]you know underline the word consciously here and highlight it because it
[35:18]is essential it is the key word here we should consciously know
[35:22]life is moving on and you know there's so many proofs to
[35:26]show that uh in the end we are going to return to
[35:31]him however are we consciously aware of that because when we are
[35:37]consciously aware of that our actions and our aha and our visions
[35:41]and our approaches to many things in life will change so this
[35:48]is the first tip and the most crucial to be aware of
[35:54]to understand that we are going to have a meeting in years
[35:59]to come and that meeting is when we will be judged by
[36:03]allah this is the first step the second step is for one
[36:10]to recognize that this nephes of his or her as human beings
[36:13]is nothing but a mere attachment to the source which is god
[36:16]and it's not the other way around now let me simplify that
[36:21]i need allah allah doesn't need me of course he would definitely
[36:27]love for his servant to be close to him to perform the
[36:33]amal in which he likes to reach him because allah loves his
[36:37]servants and insha allah in the upcoming discussions we can elaborate uh
[36:42]when it comes to this point now this level of closeness that
[36:51]allah describes himself in the quran to be towards the servant when
[36:57]he says i am near i am close what type of closeness
[37:00]is it is it closeness and time is it closeness in space
[37:04]is it closeness in reality which is above time and space and
[37:07]place and whatever it is what is meant by closeness here brothers
[37:10]and sisters is closeness and ownership and what we mean by ownership
[37:19]is mulkey and ownership is of two types you have one type
[37:24]of ownership which is uh man-made or given by man or even
[37:28]given by allah subhana washala to man that is what they call
[37:38]atibari and there is an ownership which is which is true which
[37:42]is genuine the ownership of one's wealth money car apartments phone property
[37:48]whatever it is this ownership is given to you because of a
[37:55]transaction let's say that occurs between you and uh another person and
[37:59]you know based on this transaction according to the law you know
[38:04]this becomes mine and this becomes yours i pay you a sum
[38:06]of money and you give me this product it becomes mine you
[38:09]can't take it away from me this property is mine now to
[38:11]use it you need my permission and the sharia allah as well
[38:16]through the ownership towards certain things but this ownership is given from
[38:28]god to man and even this ownership that is given to us
[38:32]from allah is not real it's not happily in reality and the
[38:39]true ownership if we were to explain it is the ownership of
[38:45]existence and non-existence the one who has all mastery the one who
[38:49]has all authority the one who shall decide what shall be created
[38:53]and what shall be sustained and what shall cease to exist in
[38:57]the end allah has been controlled has the authority over everything over
[39:01]existence and non-existence if allah wants me to exist he'll create me
[39:06]if allah wants me to perish allah shall take me away and
[39:10]i'm done my my time is finished in this dunya because he
[39:13]does not want me anymore this is because he is the sole
[39:18]owner this is real ownership in the verse when allah says it
[39:22]is in reference to this meaning why because everything we own everything
[39:27]we have everything we think we have power and authority over in
[39:31]reality and let us be real here brothers and sisters it's not
[39:34]ours it's temporary we're borrowing it we're renting it from allah because
[39:39]of his blessings and because of how much he loves us he
[39:45]is allowing us to use it even this body of ours even
[39:46]our own children our sons and daughters we think that you know
[39:51]my son is mine and everything i have is mine it's in
[39:56]reality it's not like that that's why in some of the different
[40:01]cultures i know back home in lebanon many households or many people
[40:08]have shops they have you know big portraits inside of their shops
[40:14]with sometimes verses of the quran written on it that everything we
[40:20]own this malik is for allah it's not mine so in reality
[40:24]they know that this this shop this apartment is not yours it's
[40:30]for allah but practically do i apply that when i am faced
[40:34]with the tribulation if i lose it do i act like it's
[40:38]mine or it's a blessing allah gave me and whenever he wants
[40:42]he can take it and remove it away from me this is
[40:45]what we need to understand brothers and sisters allah he speaks about
[40:56]this we read 10 times a day and we talk about ownership
[40:59]without even realizing when we say malik we read this verse that
[41:03]allah is the king the ruler the owner of this universe of
[41:08]yamadine the day of judgment the master of all of the worlds
[41:11]as well we should you know be reading insha allah in the
[41:17]coming weeks daily in sha ramadan you know in the very first
[41:23]phrases in the duha we recite the following line alhamdulillah all praises
[41:31]be to allah the lord of all sovereignty so allah is the
[41:35]creator allah is the one in control the one with authority and
[41:40]he is close to his creation in a way like unlike any
[41:45]others in giving and taking and existing and in non-existence so this
[41:51]closeness of the creator is the strongest of closeness and because we
[41:54]are servants of his allah looks at us you know you're servants
[42:00]of mine then uh i am closer to you to my servants
[42:03]than your own selves allah is closer to us than our own
[42:07]selves that's why the quran says we are closer to him than
[42:12]his jugular vain and how close can uh how more closer can
[42:17]allah be or in another verse and know that allah intervenes between
[42:26]a man and his heart and that to him you will be
[42:30]gathered this is the reality this closeness of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[42:35]to the servant is what we feel in the heart when we
[42:44]speak about that presence in allah in that sense when we are
[42:52]able to understand these two points i mentioned then we are able
[42:58]to comprehend who allah is and find allah azzawajal within our self
[43:04]and this is what many of the duas of the imam salaamu
[43:08]alayhim talk about this ownership this reality of uh imam saying you
[43:19]are the malik you are the owner you are the one with
[43:22]i am nothing but a mamluk a servant a slave i am
[43:25]uh i am the one owned by you who else can be
[43:32]merciful than me except you the owner so this is the uh
[43:37]second tip brothers and sisters so whatever uh you know you want
[43:42]to call it tip step it is to understand who we are
[43:46]what we are so we can appreciate the greatness of allah as
[43:50]we are simply nothing but creations of the almighty now the last
[43:53]point and i don't know how much time i have left i'm
[43:56]going to quickly try to uh speak about it i'd like to
[44:02]discuss you know some of the practices one needs in order to
[44:04]reach allah after supposedly we took the first two steps in order
[44:09]to know allah by uh knowing uh his greatness appreciating who he
[44:15]is knowing this relationship we have with him as the master as
[44:19]the creator as the owner what is the next step i can
[44:24]perform and what are the practices that i need to implement and
[44:27]these practices brothers and sisters we need to follow them step by
[44:30]step especially starting from now in the month of shabbat because in
[44:32]the month of you know you s the seed in shaban you
[44:38]water it you take care of it and in the month of
[44:44]ramadan you this tree this plant becomes fruitful and you're able to
[44:49]pluck off the fruits from the street so by starting to follow
[44:52]these steps and implementing them in our day to day life that
[44:56]will make it very beneficial for us to gain from the blessings
[45:00]of ramadan in allah the first step is what the as monitoring
[45:07]ourselves watching over yourselves what am i doing now ask myself this
[45:13]question frequently these minutes these hours passing by how am i spending
[45:16]them am i sinning am i disobeying allah am i hurting someone
[45:21]am i making mistakes what type of mistakes are they how many
[45:25]mistakes are they what are they so is to put a checklist
[45:28]in front of you either on you know on paper use pen
[45:34]and paper write it down have it aside whenever you want to
[45:36]go to sleep at night you know have a checklist in front
[45:39]of you or on your phone or have a picture of it
[45:43]in your mind yeah and question yourself these questions we are just
[45:45]i just mentioned question them to yourself every night that in and
[45:51]of this beautiful life and make me of those whose heart is
[45:59]fearful of you of of whose eye is watchful of you this
[46:06]is what i want so the first step is this murakaba to
[46:13]monitor myself the second step is to hold myself accountable okay so
[46:17]i have this checklist in front of me i checked so and
[46:21]so i know i made a mistake here i know i have
[46:25]flaws what happens now do i just put this checklist aside put
[46:27]it in my dryer and just move on and continue life normally
[46:29]of course not the second step is to hold myself accountable i
[46:35]did riba let's say why did i check this box why did
[46:41]i do it what was the reason what was the motive what
[46:43]led me to listening to music what led me to not wear
[46:47]the hijab properly to lack in my salat i need to analyze
[46:51]this checklist and by analyzing this checklist i am performing the muhasaba
[46:58]i am holding myself accountable and muhasabah is very important in your
[47:04]day to day activities that's why imam al-qaeda in one of the
[47:10]traditions he says he is not from us the one who does
[47:15]not hold himself this nephes of theirs accountable every single day so
[47:18]this is something you have to do on a daily basis the
[47:22]third step is which means blame i need to blame myself for
[47:28]my actions for my flaws i need to admonish myself criticize myself
[47:33]take responsibility for every wrong decision and every wrong movement i i
[47:37]did gave me somewhat of a free will not complete free will
[47:44]and i can take the decision in the end now if someone
[47:49]influenced me if someone affected me negatively okay all these might be
[47:53]uh causes that might have led for me to do so and
[47:58]so but in the end i took that final decision i put
[48:02]myself in the situation so i need to blame myself and only
[48:04]myself for that do not be like the person who and he
[48:09]sins and it's just like a fly that passes by as it
[48:11]mentions no this is not what you're supposed to be the fourth
[48:19]step which is the muharram it is time to take action what
[48:24]does muhammad mean it means to go to war to go to
[48:25]battle and the biggest battle the biggest war is the battle of
[48:28]the mephis to beat this nephes of yours this shaitaan inside of
[48:34]you which leads you to z to sin which leads you through
[48:37]these faculties allah gave you through this desire and through his imagination
[48:41]to make mistakes and to go astray of the path of allah
[48:46]subhanahu wa it's time for me to take control it's time for
[48:50]me to let my be the leading force not my emotions and
[48:53]feelings it's time to set my standards high it's time to make
[48:57]an oath between me and allah i will not do this again
[49:01]allah i will take all the precautions all the necessary steps in
[49:06]order for me not to fall in this mistake in order for
[49:09]me not to test positive not as positive for quran and inshallah
[49:13]no one test positive to test positive what and not being able
[49:17]to conquer this nephes of yours so i need to set high
[49:25]standards and i need to apply them so i can win that
[49:27]battle with shaytan because i need to reach the perfection and the
[49:33]absolute perfection which is allah subhanahu wa i need to illuminate my
[49:39]heart with hope and victory the last and final step is i
[49:43]need to be consistent in doing so so i know i have
[49:47]to apply these four steps on a daily basis the next thing
[49:51]to do is to constantly perform them and this might be the
[49:54]hardest of them yeah i i might uh follow into these mistakes
[49:59]i might do all these steps one day second day third day
[50:03]a month for years but i still feel that you know i'm
[50:07]lacking something i'm still making flaws what does it mean i don't
[50:12]keep trying it doesn't mean i give up athletes you see you
[50:14]know if they want to perfect something if an athlete wants to
[50:18]perfect let's say in football a free kick you know you train
[50:21]for hours and hours for days and days you put until you
[50:25]perfect it you see like messy sometimes how when yeah whenever he
[50:28]shoots the free kick it becomes easy you know it's it's probably
[50:32]going to be a goal so the same way i need to
[50:37]constantly continue to put in the work and in the effort and
[50:44]remember in the end allah is allah will give you guidance but
[50:46]you need to put in the work and in the effort and
[50:49]i'll end off with this slide from almona where emir when we
[51:00]are able to perform all of these and have this understanding of
[51:04]allah allah is present within us when we have maharifa of this
[51:09]nephes of ours we are able to be from the true the
[51:13]true knowers in you we pray and we ask allah to become
[51:21]from the true arafat and we ask the almighty to illuminate our
[51:24]hearts with the knowledge and with the love of muhammad alhamdulillah muhammad
[51:42]um we did have uh just two questions that came in uh
[51:46]so inshallah i'll put them up on the screen we'll try to
[51:52]address them um the best we can within the within the few
[51:55]minutes that we have and then we have sayyid ahmad waiting in
[51:58]the background to recite the command for us inshallah so there's this
[52:04]question um from a sister uh suffering is all around us how
[52:10]do we maintain our faith or help others to maintain their faith
[52:12]through difficult times also how do we know this difficulty is not
[52:15]a punishment from allah that's a very good question because suffering and
[52:20]bella and tribulations is part of life we see that they talk
[52:30]about this a lot about he makes you go through these troubles
[52:39]and these tribulations is tested the moment is frequently tested if we
[52:49]go to the uh history we read some of the history of
[52:52]the we see every single imam the imams are infallible they're given
[52:56]knowledge and adam and maharish from allah yet they were tested yet
[53:02]the imams went through tribulation through struggles in order to preach and
[53:06]in order to give present this message to the people in the
[53:12]perfect of ways and some of these people were able to take
[53:15]this message and illuminate their hearts with the knowledge of muhammad muhammad
[53:19]and others were not however we need to understand that it is
[53:25]a part of life suffering is a part of life bala is
[53:28]a part of life it is just our perspective when it comes
[53:32]to suffering that we need to understand that it is not the
[53:37]end of the world i'm not saying it's easy to do it
[53:40]and i'm not saying i can and if i go through tribulation
[53:42]right away i just forget about no obviously as a human being
[53:46]in your nature the same way we spoke about fitra in this
[53:49]innate nature of yours uh you know you have to cope with
[53:53]the loss you feel sad you you feel upset and that that's
[53:57]that's normal you can mourn and if you pass if someone passes
[53:59]away but in the end you need to understand that you know
[54:02]your life doesn't end here you have to continue not just because
[54:06]this hit you not just because i lost money in a business
[54:09]or something happened to me and no khalas uh it's the end
[54:12]of the world the end of the world the is your meeting
[54:15]with allah subhanahu wa and sometimes because of our actions because of
[54:22]our because of the haram actions that we might perform in our
[54:26]day-to-day life it is a punishment from allah and sometimes it is
[54:32]because allah loves you so i'm not saying all of it is
[54:34]that or all of it is that it depends uh what the
[54:38]situation and the circumstance is but know that the one who is
[54:42]sabor the one who has patience when it comes to these ballot
[54:44]allah has a reward for him that's why there's a tree which
[54:49]is mentioned in some of the traditions which is known as which
[54:55]is for those who are able to cope with that will give
[54:58]the people the servants who are able to be patient and uh
[55:04]take this look at it in a positive sense and move forward
[55:07]and say the phrase we mentioned and the verse will give them
[55:14]the reward and allah allow them to take from the blessings of
[55:16]the street and i think the the the the question that we
[55:24]have left might be a little bit similar but we'll just uh
[55:27]make sure that we have covered it it came through the messenger
[55:29]so it doesn't have a name uh salaam alaikum i have a
[55:33]question for shaykh zafar please during these difficult times how can we
[55:35]maintain being hopeful and truly have this sense of contentment and trust
[55:40]in god's timing and that he will reward us for our patience
[55:43]and efforts the chef explained this point but it really has been
[55:47]challenging to truly control and maintain this mindset every day and not
[55:51]lose contact with this feeling of gratitude and patience essence for the
[55:58]question i said so um any like uh like like i said
[56:01]i know it's challenging i know it's difficult but uh let's look
[56:06]at the reality of things my struggle and let's let's be honest
[56:14]it's not going to be worse than that of the struggle of
[56:19]the imams of imam hussain of abu fateh who we remember today
[56:24]was imprisoned was taken captive from place to place with chains in
[56:30]his hand you know and the scorching sun and his he couldn't
[56:34]move his uh his his hands our bala no compare it to
[56:40]that of the bait and i'm not saying that this is easy
[56:43]to do yeah but this is if you want to not lose
[56:48]this connection remember the music of imam hussain remember the treasures of
[56:57]the that's why we constantly in what we s we try to
[57:02]learn from them we try to uh embody the teachings and the
[57:06]practices which did the the whole struggle the whole story of karbala
[57:12]this sacrifice these the martyrs the the way the massacre occurred was
[57:19]for us other than of course imam hussain wanted to save the
[57:24]religion of islam from yazid and to show them who is the
[57:30]true khalifa and leader of the one with true authority appointed by
[57:32]allah rightfully but at the same time allah wants us to show
[57:38]that no matter how times are difficult in your life in your
[57:43]life remember that of say this and remember the tragedy of rasulullah
[57:50]because in the end if you you want to speak about uh
[57:55]you know how uh disturbing or how graphic or the way the
[58:00]master of karbala happened it was probably you know it's probably one
[58:06]of the the greatest uh or the most brutal of ways someone
[58:13]can uh be killed but rasulallah and some of the narrations allude
[58:18]to this like some of the nurses i believe and where he
[58:22]says remember as well the tragedy of rasulullah because rasulullah says in
[58:26]tradition come out with did i go through the other and the
[58:30]hurting that rasulullah went through or not if not then i can
[58:37]continue on inshallah and i can move forward and i could you
[58:39]know be try to remain patient and to the best of my
[58:43]ability inshallah i was able to answer this question thank you so
[58:50]much for your time uh it's it's a pleasure meeting you and
[58:53]having you on the lyft platform for the first time and our
[58:58]brothers and sisters inshallah we look forward to having you for the
