[0:22][Music] [Music] foreign before we get started is okay if the brothers
[1:35]can just come a bit closer so that it's easier forever coming
[1:37]from the back thank you for the past few nights we have
[1:52]been discussing the topic of the spiritual journey towards allah and what
[1:55]this entails and what it means exactly and that we wanted a
[2:01]step-by-step methodological and chronological approach to what this journey means there was
[2:06]a science that was developed by the alama within islam called which
[2:11]is the science of wayfaring which means the path towards allah the
[2:16]path of spirituality in our lives we have received much wisdom and
[2:21]knowledge and lessons from those older than us and those who know
[2:23]about the narrations of the rebate and tradition of the adult but
[2:28]we haven't been able to secure this within ourselves as a proper
[2:32]science by which we know that we take step one followed by
[2:36]step two followed by step three and so this science is a
[2:39]way in which we know how to approach this journey towards god
[2:44]whilst knowing exactly what to do and it begins when imam ali
[2:49]salam takes kumail and tells kumail that narration that i have been
[2:52]mentioning every night that inshallah we can all memorize and contemplate over
[2:56]and flip over in this dimensions to know the depth of it
[3:00]when he tells kumail kumail there is no movement there is nothing
[3:11]no action nothing absolutely nothing that you can do the slightest movement
[3:15]of a finger even you cannot do anything except that you need
[3:20]maharifa and knowledge before that thing this is true quranically this is
[3:23]true philosophically and we discussed the topic of knowledge in depth last
[3:28]night what what knowledge really is and the essence of knowledge three
[3:31]pillars the journey is built upon three pillars this is the recap
[3:36]that we do every night three pillars helium is the first pillar
[3:40]knowledge the second pillar is iman and the third pillar is knowledge
[3:48]faith gnosis three steps in between them to elevate you need from
[3:54]islam to iman from knowledge to get to faith is good action
[3:59]you get to faith faith is when the knowledge is settled into
[4:03]the heart because knowledge is not enough all of us need to
[4:08]pursue knowledge it's upon us to be people of intellect to have
[4:10]intellectual discussions to read to listen to engage in seeking knowledge but
[4:15]it's not enough because knowledge has a weakness that someone may have
[4:19]knowledge and not act upon that knowledge so hypocrisy is born into
[4:23]the heart therefore it is imperative that we aim for a level
[4:26]above knowledge and that is when the knowledge is settled into the
[4:31]heart so we may apply that knowledge and live by what we
[4:34]know to get there you need to act upon the knowledge that
[4:36]you know that is the bridge between the first pillar and the
[4:39]second pillar elim to iman but even iman is not enough iman
[4:44]is a fantastic level and stage that sometimes we reach and sometimes
[4:47]we move away from we get there and then we drop and
[4:51]that's the problem that yet still possibly it's still possible that you
[4:54]drop from that station you want to get to a level where
[4:58]you are consistent the weakness within iman is that you believe but
[5:03]you don't see it's blind you might try to fight the temptation
[5:08]and the desire or an anger but because it is blind sometimes
[5:11]your iman may be at level 50 and the temptation the desire
[5:16]the anger is at level 60 and it overcomes your iman it
[5:21]overcomes the level that you are on we use the story of
[5:24]nebu yusuf alaihissalam when zulaika was the temptation and zuleika was the
[5:28]desire and she closes the doors and she approaches him and she
[5:30]tells him to come towards her and he says i see you
[5:37]refuge in god he is my lord he's honored me that's iman
[5:40]he's trying to fight the desire but it wasn't enough because he
[5:49]was still going to be seduced by her and she was still
[5:55]moving towards him but allah showed him the quran when he saw
[6:00]the brahman of his lord which means he saw the truths he
[6:02]saw the bowatin he saw the reality of what the action was
[6:06]and when you see the reality of it and the because the
[6:10]reality of sin is discussed in reality right now shaitaan what he
[6:15]does is zena unto the dunya and he makes us see things
[6:18]in a form of illusion and so we are attracted to it
[6:22]the reality of disobeying god is the worst thing and so if
[6:26]allah shows you the quran you would not go towards it that's
[6:29]the third level which is i find which is when you believe
[6:32]and you see so because you see you would not go towards
[6:38]that in which you transgress or disobey god or hurt your soul
[6:40]and a lot of what we're speaking about right now is not
[6:43]even about heaven and hell that's far away from what we're speaking
[6:45]about we're trying to grow into glorious human beings we're trying to
[6:51]grow into what adam was potentially made for we are the sons
[6:55]of adam and adam was supposed to be the perfect human being
[6:57]al-insan al-kamil this is more than just heaven and hell this is
[7:03]reaching your potential and if your life is not about going towards
[7:06]this then you've wasted it you got 70 80 odd years on
[7:09]average if you don't die from something else before that that you
[7:13]are able to manifest this potential and if you don't then you
[7:19]were a waste really that's what the imam says people are three
[7:22]you are either a student you are either a teacher or literally
[7:27]riff raff he says riffraff waste of space waste man of one
[7:32]by the way you guys take the words from london yeah we
[7:35]started those words uh brothers we're getting asked if we can come
[7:53]even closer it's okay and so that is the recap of this
[8:04]mind map that we want to get towards a lot of panota
[8:06]we discussed knowledge we said that knowledge has two main attributes that
[8:14]it is beginning hadith it has a beginning and that is immaterial
[8:17]because it has a beginning it means there must be someone who
[8:23]begins it who is allah so allah is the trigger of knowledge
[8:25]allah is the one who directly gives knowledge to everyone and the
[8:29]fact that it is immaterial means it's coming from another realm because
[8:34]in this realm the physical realm it is the material realm and
[8:37]the material realm cannot give you knowledge so you don't gain knowledge
[8:40]from simply the physical things around you or reading a physical book
[8:44]or all of these things what that does when you read a
[8:47]book when you listen to a lecture like you're doing right now
[8:49]you are gaining knowledge how you are creating is you are creating
[8:57]the readiness the capability the acceptance to receive knowledge then allah directly
[9:01]gives it to you so allah is ready the knowledge is ready
[9:05]everything is behind the curtain and everything is waiting for you to
[9:08]do what upon you as a catalyst in the material world to
[9:12]trigger the immaterial knowledge that's going to come towards you directly from
[9:17]allah and this happens in various forms so a cafe or a
[9:21]believer can seek knowledge but the believer has a special kind of
[9:24]root to gain knowledge that is different we need to take advantage
[9:28]of all of them but true knowledge real knowledge the knowledge of
[9:34]light that imam assad islam is talking about that it is light
[9:41]in the heart which allah subhanahu ta'ala sends into the heart of
[9:44]whom he wills that knowledge is gained from having a relationship with
[9:50]allah and living by the sharia and living in remembrance and taqwa
[9:55]of him and then he gives wisdom directly and so tonight we're
[10:00]going to speak about is the form and concept of islamic meditation
[10:03]because meditation is prevalent within our tradition and many people don't know
[10:09]this meditation is a way in which we can receive the direct
[10:12]knowledge that we spoke about yesterday straight into the heart without having
[10:17]any outside sources trying to assist us what do i mean by
[10:22]that a quick recap of direct knowledge and indirect knowledge i mentioned
[10:25]yesterday if you go to the doctor and you have pain in
[10:28]your knee and you tell the doctor i have pain in my
[10:31]knee he can diagnose it and he tells you what's wrong and
[10:33]he tells you how to recover and the exercises that you need
[10:36]but he doesn't feel the pain in your knee he understands it
[10:39]he doesn't feel the actual pain you feel the pain that's called
[10:43]that's when you know for sure that this thing exists that there
[10:48]is pain in my knee that's real elim inside you sometimes this
[10:52]islam that you have it might be something that is an illusion
[10:56]you might not be wrong you might you might not be right
[10:58]you might be wrong about a certain conclusion that you come towards
[11:01]that's why seeking knowledge from the outside is also needed like right
[11:05]now a lecture would be deemed as seeking knowledge from the outside
[11:08]because it's someone talking to you if you're talking to anyone if
[11:13]you're reading a book any third party source means that there is
[11:17]an outside realm in which you're seeking knowledge from when you do
[11:21]something from within you just think if you just think even if
[11:26]you didn't read any books and he did nothing else but you
[11:28]just thought logically speaking if you thought and you contemplated and you
[11:35]reflected then you will gain a type of knowledge in which you
[11:39]have maximum and ultimate belief because you reach that on your own
[11:42]and no one can disprove that to you it's just within you
[11:46]when you just say i know so when we come towards the
[11:53]quran and we see in the quran allah uses the word that's
[11:57]what it means to reflect to contemplate to meditate he says [Music]
[12:08]so we read the quran because we want to gain reward that's
[12:13]fantastic we read the quran when someone passes away fantastic read the
[12:17]quran so they can read the entire until we get to 30
[12:21]in shah ramadan fantastic but the quran here is asking if the
[12:26]quran don't they contemplate over me the quran is asking about itself
[12:30]do they read the quran do they read me and contemplate the
[12:36]quran when you read an ayah instead of reading 20 pages 10
[12:42]pages five pages read one page read half a page read one
[12:44]ayah and do it don't they meditate and contemplate are there locks
[12:58]on their hearts so it's giving you two choices you either contemplate
[13:02]or there's a lock on your heart there's no third choice if
[13:06]there was no lock on your heart then you contemplate and where
[13:10]does the lock come from and see this is when you do
[13:12]tab over the quran then you start to reflect upon the ayah
[13:15]it's ironic because this is the quran the quran as which means
[13:28]it's talking about someone or something is the looks allah [Music] which
[13:40]means that the lock on your heart is coming from you that
[13:44]you are the one who locked your heart the heart got tired
[13:49]of you it got tired of not being used they got tired
[13:51]of being neglected and they got tired of your lack of contemplation
[13:55]because contemplation on and understanding is in the heart they have hearts
[14:03]they don't understand with which means the heart understands and the heart
[14:06]can be locked when the heart is locked understanding is locked which
[14:09]means your intellect is within your heart so when you disobey god
[14:13]you transgress your intellect capacity level decreases a spiritual reality to it
[14:20]so the quran is saying don't they contemplate meditate reflect over me
[14:27]or have they placed locks on their heart from their neglect that's
[14:32]one way in which allah subhanahu wa tahirah uses the word tadabur
[14:36]to reflect and contemplate in the quran the word is used also
[14:43]to describe the angels while mudamra and they're called mudabirat because they
[14:49]organize and they provide harmony to the world allah assigns the angels
[14:54]jobs really objectives like you have the angel of death and you
[14:59]have the angel of several different objectives and he calls them because
[15:04]they harmonize everything they organize everything and if you speak arabic here
[15:09]you know and we just usually say make it ready to make
[15:13]something ready and nutadibir okay it comes from here as well is
[15:18]to reflect contemplate it can also be used in terms of organizing
[15:21]organizing what organizing your thoughts organizing yourself the chaos within and you
[15:26]look in the quran again when he uses tadab another time allah
[15:29]subhanahu wa another time in the same way quran is don't they
[15:41]contemplate over the quran don't they engage in tadab but over the
[15:46]quran and if they did they would realize that if it was
[15:51]from anyone else other than allah then within the quran there would
[15:54]be many contradictions the quran is claiming that if you contemplate over
[15:58]me you will know that it's from allah because when you contemplate
[16:01]and see the harmony within me because i am so organized and
[16:06]i'm so harmonious the quran is so harmonious 20 year period rasulallah
[16:12]is preaching the quran and there's not one contradiction if it wasn't
[16:15]from a human being how much do you change from week to
[16:18]week month to month year to year imagine over 20 years and
[16:22]it's the same tone as if it's the same time and there's
[16:27]not one contradiction in the quran which means that the quran is
[16:32]a book of harmony so you come towards the quran and the
[16:36]quran is saying do tadabbar over me to gain that harmony so
[16:42]use the quran as your reflection you reflect yourself upon the holy
[16:46]book upon the quran let it all the chaos that's inside us
[16:49]all these crazy thoughts that we have all our contradictions because we
[16:54]have a lot of contradictions you place that onto the quran and
[16:58]allow it to organize it for you to organize your soul for
[17:01]you and organize your thoughts through you before you through the words
[17:04]of the quran and through that book of the quran you will
[17:05]see try this is one of the techniques on the spiritual path
[17:10]of seeking knowledge so we read books we go to lectures we
[17:13]listen to podcasts we engage in intellectual discussion and we think and
[17:19]we contemplate that's the main one that we want we want to
[17:23]think we want to contemplate upon the world the universe allah subhanahu
[17:27]wa be people of meaning and think and contemplate upon the areas
[17:31]of the quran and if we do that we can take the
[17:37]harmony that is upon the quran and harmonize our souls and the
[17:51]concept of meditation is a concept that right now is very prevalent
[17:57]among people who aren't even into religion because they see the benefits
[18:01]of how much harmony it gives to your mind so obviously we
[18:05]know that the buddhists are the ones most prevalent and famous in
[18:09]using this technique in terms of meditation it's a big practice within
[18:13]their religion and many people who are not of any religion practice
[18:18]meditation because of the clarity and peace of mind it gives them
[18:21]so there's a reality to this and the quran is saying so
[18:28]there must be something to this and we must learn even sheikh
[18:35]bhajat if you look shaykh before he reads he says to get
[18:38]into the zone before you begin this yara how you sit down
[18:42]and you begin to say the word hussein hussain hussain hussain hussain
[18:49]with every breath and you contemplate upon that word and slowly your
[18:54]heart softens and slowly you reflect over karbala and slowly maybe you
[18:58]cry and then reads the earth you know what that is that's
[19:03]a mantra that's a meditation with every breath what is meditation so
[19:08]just because i want to be very clear here as in the
[19:12]reason why some people think this is a taboo is because you're
[19:16]teaching things from other religions it isn't that whole introduction was to
[19:19]show you that we have a form of meditation within our religion
[19:23]and this is a form right now is given an example of
[19:27]that meditation i spent last summer in china i spent it in
[19:33]a buddhist monastery and i studied buddhism in that summer and there
[19:39]were many comparisons that i made in between islam and buddhism and
[19:41]i was very surprised to how much that there was in common
[19:46]and very interesting thing happened to me well many interesting things happened
[19:50]to me when i was there a lot of them when i
[19:54]engaged in talking with the buddhists and learning from them and then
[19:59]learning from us from our tradition because i was the first muslim
[20:02]that many of them ever met i was the only muslim in
[20:05]the entire city and for many of them the first time they
[20:08]ever met one so they were very interested in me and i
[20:12]was still practicing my own religion i told them that i have
[20:16]to pray and i read quran and this kind of thing and
[20:19]they respected that but i engaged in meditation with them what did
[20:24]the meditation consist of they used to say that your mind is
[20:28]monkey mind because it's crazy and the monkey is always jumping around
[20:34]so if you want to calm monkey down you give monkey banana
[20:43]and the banana what was the banana they say to calm your
[20:49]mind down you can never stop your mind from thinking because it
[20:52]goes crazy stop thinking stop thinking and you're thinking about stopping thinking
[20:56]so in order to stop the mind from thinking you give it
[21:00]a banana what the banana is is one thought just one thought
[21:04]give it one thought and leave it there don't give it any
[21:09]more and control yourself to have that one thought and all the
[21:12]time the fragments within your mind will align and you will be
[21:16]able to consistently contemplate upon one thought and then you become a
[21:20]person of complete clarity which is why if one has a problem
[21:24]and then they meditate after the after they meditate it's almost as
[21:27]if they have received some sort of because now they have an
[21:31]answer to their problem it's only because their mind is clear now
[21:35]many of us don't engage in this meditation salat is supposed to
[21:39]be this because what do we do in salat you think of
[21:42]one thing right that's what it's supposed to be all our lives
[21:45]we're told think only of allah and ibadah and the words that
[21:48]you're saying don't think of the chicken you're going to get afterwards
[21:51]don't think of going to the gym don't think of going to
[21:53]school don't think of anything think of salat and so this is
[21:58]a practice that we have we're supposed to be this way in
[22:00]any case you think of one thing the one thing that they
[22:04]use that all people use because all people have this in common
[22:09]is breath they use breath and many of us don't know how
[22:11]to breathe properly by the way breath is an art if you
[22:14]learn how to breathe you feel a lot better you speak a
[22:17]lot better you're much more grounded your energy is grounded energies are
[22:22]real your energy is grounded you can command respect your voice changes
[22:26]this is all real just from breath breath they breathe in and
[22:31]they think of the breath coming in and they breathe out and
[22:34]they think of the breath coming out one and then they count
[22:38]to ten and afterwards after about a week or so you're not
[22:41]a counter anymore i engaged in this for about a month every
[22:45]day in the final week we had to take an oath of
[22:52]silence where you don't communicate with anyone you don't talk to anyone
[22:54]no laptops no phones no screens nothing for seven days nothing whatever
[23:01]you have in your mind that's what you have and that's what
[23:05]you live with and you know what i found out we are
[23:08]crazy people really your mind is crazy you know that voice that
[23:13]speaks to you as if it's someone else that if you really
[23:16]just think about it for a moment it's insane it's almost like
[23:20]everyone's insane but we're all okay with it because you're insane and
[23:25]i'm insane as soon as you take a breath and you go
[23:27]live with yourself for one day you realize the insanity and you
[23:31]think oh my god i have been in a ruffler this whole
[23:36]time and then you know why this many times we pray a
[23:40]day you know why we take a month out of the year
[23:42]in remembrance of god to come out of that insanity for the
[23:47]first two three days i couldn't take it because all we did
[23:51]from morning to night is meditate imagine closing your eyes and breathing
[23:54]and sitting upright from morning till night and you only stop to
[24:00]stretch or walk or to pray or eat that's what we did
[24:02]but it also showed me in one week it showed me the
[24:06]levels that all of us can reach because you feel things and
[24:12]you experience things for yourself you know that alien that we talked
[24:15]about the direct knowledge you can't prove me wrong because i know
[24:17]it because i felt it because i saw it a london boy
[24:22]from the city like all of you one week without people and
[24:28]in meditation and then you remember things you have answers you see
[24:34]things you don't have to be shaykh to see things you don't
[24:37]have to be allamat about the body to see things allah is
[24:40]showing you things all the time but you don't want to see
[24:44]i remember i had memories of things i didn't even know i
[24:49]still had yeah and things that would come up memories of when
[24:52]i was seven years old and i was crying to my mother
[24:56]because i wanted a piece of chocolate cake i remembered that and
[24:58]i got emotional about it and i had no idea that that
[25:02]was still there somewhere that was still there somewhere how much about
[25:06]me do i not know and if i can only know god
[25:10]by knowing myself first then how can i ever know god when
[25:12]there's so much inside me that i don't know and all it
[25:15]took was to be away from everyone for a while and spend
[25:19]time with yourself for a while reading the quran was different it
[25:23]was as if allah was speaking to me directly praying was different
[25:29]and what do you think atticaf is what do you think spending
[25:33]three days in the mosque is away from everyone it doesn't supposed
[25:35]to be this fun thing bring playstations or whatever else to the
[25:38]masjid and atticaf and we spent three days chilling eating popcorn and
[25:43]everything no no get some yogurt come into the masjid by yourself
[25:49]three days contemplate read think articaf that's what it's for this is
[25:54]in our tradition guys right neglected so you're supposed to be people
[25:59]of thought of reflection by the way very interesting just on a
[26:03]side note my interactions with these people were amazing amazing there was
[26:07]a one brother that i was with in the room his name
[26:10]was nick he was a german guy and he came to china
[26:14]as well so we shared the room together and nick was a
[26:18]mathematician doing his phd in mathematics and he doesn't believe in anything
[26:20]outside the brain and he tells me he doesn't believe in the
[26:24]immaterial world and nothing and he came to china because he's looking
[26:26]for something he wants to see is this real this whole immaterial
[26:29]thing so this guy is really trying like he went all the
[26:33]way to china and he told me i never thought that i
[26:35]would come to china looking for buddhism and i'd come up with
[26:38]islam because i would pray in the morning i used to wake
[26:43]up before everyone else to pray and he said you know when
[26:44]you pray and you know when you wake up in the morning
[26:48]and you sing sing loud i like it when you sing so
[26:53]i would start alhamdulillah and he would wake up and so me
[26:58]and him would sit down and a lot of other people wallah
[27:00]the way we would talk and they would ask about islam and
[27:02]i told them we have someone called hussain ibn and he was
[27:08]surrounded by thirty thousand and he was with his family and he
[27:11]had no water to drink and all he had to do was
[27:14]given to a tyrant but he stood by truth and power and
[27:18]when they came to slaughter his family you know what he did
[27:21]because all they kept talking to me about was you know buddhism
[27:24]is compassion buddhism is compassion buddhism is compassion i said this man
[27:28]hussein abraham you know what he did i said he cried for
[27:30]them and they were sure you guys have someone like that in
[27:35]islam this islam that wants to cut people's heads off everywhere and
[27:38]allahu akbar and all this kind of thing yes hussain ibn ali
[27:42]was crying for his enemies for what they're doing to their own
[27:45]souls and their hereafter i said but we differ from you in
[27:52]the end once it gets past the red line we fight to
[27:54]the death that's the difference you might succumb on your knees with
[27:59]us we cry for the enemy because what they're doing to their
[28:04]soul but we still stand by truth and even if he was
[28:05]one against thirty thousand he took as many as he could out
[28:10]before he went that was the difference but they were mesmerized by
[28:14]a personality like that you have something in your hands and in
[28:17]your heart that the world doesn't know about and you're crazy about
[28:22]that you would die for do you know what it means to
[28:25]have something to die for it means you can never be bought
[28:29]it means you're too powerful for this world for anyone or anything
[28:32]and so this is prevalent in our tradition there's so much more
[28:37]we can say yeah the last thing last point just this one
[28:39]before i left the brother nick that i'm speaking about he said
[28:43]i don't know what it is that you have we spent the
[28:47]whole summer together i don't know what you have i don't know
[28:48]if it's real i don't know but whatever it is that you
[28:57]have i want it and that meant more than anything he spent
[29:01]the entire summer studying buddhism and all i did was just live
[29:06]by my own tradition in this place by myself and he said
[29:08]whatever is you have i want it real or not real because
[29:11]i see how it makes you we have this we can go
[29:16]into a city by ourselves the only muslim person if we have
[29:20]firm belief in this then we can move mountains and so in
[29:25]our tradition there has to be this meditation this contemplation would say
[29:30]there's no journey without this he would sit at the end of
[29:35]each day and contemplate upon five things at least that made him
[29:41]remorseful that he regretted in that day and he would think of
[29:44]all the things that made him grateful and so he would do
[29:46]shakur a meditation of shukran lilla which is tasbih to allah subhanahu
[29:52]wa tahalah for the things he was grateful for and he would
[29:56]do it far for allah for the things he was remorseful for
[30:00]every day why he would sit before his bed before he sleeps
[30:04]and do this because he's cleansing himself he's staying awake he's staying
[30:08]many of us think we're awake we're woke we awoke you are
[30:13]not woke because you can start the day awake and then you're
[30:16]asleep by 11 am inside you have to stay conscious if you're
[30:21]awake and then suddenly something happens and you snap out of it
[30:25]and you think oh my god i've been asleep for two months
[30:27]what have i been doing for two months this whole time i
[30:30]thought i was awake and i was looking at people outside like
[30:32]look at these people that are asleep when you were the one
[30:36]in heedlessness so you have to keep contemplating engaging in this that's
[30:42]what it's called to judge yourself and watch yourself and to stay
[30:47]alert and to have those one dimensions of thought when you have
[30:53]one way of thinking in terms of you think of one thing
[30:56]so that our prayers are better that's what our prayers are supposed
[30:59]to be we're entering into the presence when you come and you
[31:03]say allahu akbar you're entering into the presence of god let salat
[31:05]be your meditation daily five times so you stay awake salat is
[31:10]what's supposed to keep you awake if you're going to ask right
[31:13]now okay i get it how do i stay alert and awake
[31:15]and conscious prayer prayer prayer the adhan is saying everything it's saying
[31:26]everything that you need to know and is saying it five times
[31:29]a day and you come towards it and you pray and that's
[31:31]what's supposed to be if you're doing it mechanically then it's no
[31:34]benefit to you you're just getting rid of your jib so that
[31:38]you're not punished how much of a shame is that we have
[31:41]this opportunity to go towards something glorious and we just we we
[31:46]we take that we are not punished as enough as enough for
[31:50]us it's a shame it's a real shame you know when a
[31:52]friend of mine was teaching some children uh how to pray and
[31:57]the way he taught them was just amazing he would bring them
[32:00]and make them act in a play and he would say all
[32:04]right you're burglars and you are shopkeepers and the burglars going to
[32:08]shop keepers and he says show me what happens and the burglars
[32:10]get their hands up do this and then they say freeze and
[32:13]the shopkeepers do this right and he says wait wait what are
[32:19]you doing he says well i'm putting my hands up why he
[32:21]said freeze why are you putting your hands up well because like
[32:24]i'm submitting yeah you know when you come to salah you put
[32:27]your hands up say allahu akbar submitting to god as we say
[32:32]right i'm saying i don't have anything dunya's behind me i submit
[32:36]done put my hands up and that was just a really brilliant
[32:40]way to teach these kids how they're entering into the presence to
[32:43]show them that you don't just do this as a mechanical movement
[32:46]that you're meditating right now this is islamic meditation and we're using
[32:51]this word only because it's so popular we know it as salat
[32:53]it's prayer that's what it is prayer to give you clarity be
[32:59]a person of tadabur and contemplation meditation and prayer this is what
[33:06]we're supposed to be like and so if you are on that
[33:10]level and if you train yourself if you only do this 10
[33:12]minutes a day and you train your mind that way then you
[33:15]will understand how when we speak about knowledge and seeking knowledge sometimes
[33:20]there is knowledge you don't want to see there is knowledge that's
[33:24]bad for you when i say knowledge is bad for you not
[33:27]allah is giving everyone knowledge but then he tells you this image
[33:31]it's haram to look at it because it's bad for you if
[33:36]you have knowledge of this image remember definition of knowledge like right
[33:38]now you have knowledge that i'm in front of you knowledge is
[33:41]everything that you know so if you know of an image that
[33:46]is haram for you to look at and you know about that
[33:50]image because you looked at it you have just transgressed against your
[33:52]own soul that's what allah says that you transgressed against your own
[34:00]soul and foresee him he didn't say they transgressed against me in
[34:06]that ayah they transgressed against their own soul you're hurting yourself it
[34:09]says don't look at that that knowledge is bad for you because
[34:12]when you take knowledge like that of the haram things knowledge of
[34:16]a certain song this music is bad for me knowledge of this
[34:20]is bad for me so you want to control the awliya of
[34:24]allah they used to have only a room around their heart and
[34:27]they would have a door one door it would only open the
[34:31]door to the knowledge that would benefit the heart and they'll close
[34:33]the door to everything else but if you want to ask how
[34:36]do i become a person like that how do i have that
[34:39]kind of willpower how do i have willpower to control my thoughts
[34:43]if you cannot control your actions you will never control your thoughts
[34:49]if you keep looking at things that you shouldn't be looking at
[34:53]something as simple as that your eyes go towards that which you
[34:56]shouldn't look towards then how could you ever think that you're going
[35:01]to control this never this is so difficult to control takes a
[35:06]lifetime of work but when you do you become a person of
[35:07]wisdom and clarity and purpose and you can really be helpful you
[35:13]can be a useful person and that's all you really need to
[35:17]be right now be a useful person ask yourself am i a
[35:22]useful person outside that which benefits me if there is nothing you
[35:27]can think of we have a problem we're supposed to be useful
[35:33]to others not just to ourselves to do that you have to
[35:37]have a mind of clarity you have to have a mind of
[35:38]purpose and to do that you have to control your mind and
[35:41]to do that you have to control your actions so we want
[35:45]to seek knowledge we want to seek this direct knowledge as well
[35:48]so let us meditate and contemplate and reflect and it's so good
[35:51]to start many of you here are youth you're in your 20s
[35:54]or below but many of you some of you in your 30s
[35:57]there's still fluidity in your soul once you grow older it's much
[36:03]harder to change habits tomorrow we're going to talk about habits and
[36:07]mastery what mastery entails how we can control these actions but because
[36:12]you are in your youth start now don't be of those when
[36:17]you read the duas that the imams give us when they speak
[36:19]to allah and you say i wasted my youth in transgression and
[36:24]heedlessness from you okay youth is when it begins don't ever think
[36:30]i'm still young i still have time you don't have time youth
[36:34]right now you can change these habits whatever is in your mind
[36:37]that you feel all right that's the bad thing that i'm gonna
[36:40]change you can and you will you have to will it as
[36:44]much as you can and you have to look for the triggers
[36:46]you have to stop those triggers we'll speak more about that tomorrow
[36:48]this is the treasure chest of happiness this is the treasure chest
[36:54]of happiness believe me but it's right in the middle of the
[36:57]ocean of commitment and discipline and so if you want to get
[37:01]to the treasure chest of happiness on that island you have to
[37:05]swim through that ocean of commitment and discipline so who wants to
[37:08]swim you have to go towards that commitment and discipline to be
[37:13]people of purpose was in his 90s they called him uncle he
[37:21]was in the time of him he was the oldest one on
[37:28]the battlefield before karbala happened habib had heard that imam al-hussein is
[37:32]trapped in karbala and habib was married to a woman from the
[37:38]banu assad and they were around that tribe in kufa and he
[37:43]comes with his family with his wife just like his master and
[37:48]habib come towards karbala and he reaches there before the final night
[37:55]and the imam and his children and his family have all been
[38:04]deprived and the men begin to come out the men come out
[38:13]of their tents to greet habib assalamualaikum [Music] they sat around the
[38:37]campfire the imam looked at habib looked at his companions he told
[38:44]them thank you all for being with me tonight but i know
[38:50]of your loyalty towards me i'm giving you all the choice if
[38:58]you are to leave the camp i will not blame you you
[39:04]can leave in the middle of the night and no one will
[39:11]know that you left me how can we live and then face
[39:26]your mother faulty more when she looks at us and asks where
[39:33]were you the day my son called for help and then we
[39:52]are thrown into the wind as ashes and we are revived and
[39:59]then killed and then burnt and thrown into the windows ashes and
[40:04]if this was done to us seventy times i would never leave
[40:24]you she asks who's outside they tell her habib has come to
[40:52]you habib gets on his knees and put sand over his head
[40:59]who am i for the daughter what would you have heard and
[41:31]when she complained put sand after all the warriors were muttered [Music]
[42:17]as the women are taken prisoners the tribe comes towards the forces
[42:26]of yazidi they tell the forces you must leave this woman she
[42:33]is of a tribe they come towards her they tell her get
[42:37]up you are my tribe it's a shame for a woman to
[42:45]be captains we will not accept a woman from our tribe to
[42:58]be taken as prisoners but i don't want to go and leave
[43:13]you i am bound to be held the captor as they began
[43:31]to tell her if you don't come with us now we would
[43:36]rather uncheck our swords at you and i didn't accept for you
[43:41]to be taken as prisoner the shame upon our tribe what would
[43:49]say in the sydney remembering oh [Music] [Music] foreign
