Istimnaa’ (masturbation) breaks the fast, and it also warrants a Kaffara. There are a few rulings regarding masturbation: - It’s haram for both men and women. However, some argue that there is no evidence that it’s Haram for women because the hadiths only mention men. But this argument is rejected because the Qur’an clearly states that any type of sexual activity outside of marriage and the lawful partner is haram (Surah Al-Muminun: 5-7). - Masturbation invalidates the fast if there is a discharge of semen (for males). For females, masturbation invalidates the fast if there is excessive discharge during orgasm. - If a person engages in foreplay and as a result there is a discharge of semen, does this invalidate the fast? If this person didn’t know that foreplay will cause a discharge of semen, then his fast is valid since it was not deliberate. If the person knew that with foreplay he will likely ejaculate, then his fast is void and it warrants a Kaffara. - If a person becomes Mujnib while sleeping (wet dream), his fast isn’t invalidated. The person will need to do ghusl once he wakes up.
