[1:05]holy verse Allah Subhanahu WA Ta'ala brings to our attention the significance

[1:14]of thanking the Almighty God being thankful being grateful to Allah subhana

[1:23]WA Ta'ala yesterday and today millions of families here in the United

[1:36]States celebrated Thanksgiving it is a positive cheerful event that many people

[1:41]celebrate many families get together to give thanks and offer their thanks

[1:52]now there is a lot of talk and controversy about the origin

[1:55]of this event you know how exactly did this tradition start some

[1:59]say the Europeans when they would kill the Native Americans they would

[2:04]celebrate that's another point that we don't want to get into but

[2:12]let's just examine the significance of Thanksgiving by breaking this word into

[2:19]two parts because Thanksgiving is a combined compound word right it's made

[2:25]of two words thanks and giving let us analyze this word to

[2:33]see how we can benefit from the idea of giving thanks in

[2:38]our life Allah subhana wa ta'ala in the holy quran tells us

[2:45]that if you give thanks then i will increase you in your

[2:48]blessings the intellect brothers and sisters our intellect our power of reason

[2:56]tells us that every single moment and second we are being blessed

[3:04]everything around us the air that you breathe an imam sadiq ali

[3:11]salam in one hadith he says even the air that you breathe

[3:15]the breathing that process of inhaling air is a blessing from allah

[3:21]subhanho to anna that you have to thank God for a thousand

[3:28]times and even more the water that you drink every cell in

[3:31]your body the clothing the shelter the family the food that you

[3:39]have the mind tells us that every single second were being blessed

[3:44]now the mind tells you the intellect dictates to you that whenever

[3:50]you receive a blessing you should be thankful for it if someone

[3:57]gives you a gift isn't it your moral obligation to at least

[4:00]say thank you to the person who gave you that gift absolutely

[4:07]this is something the mind dictates that you should at least say

[4:12]thank you to the one who gives you now the intellect also

[4:16]tells us that when it comes to thanking people who give us

[4:22]gifts for instance we don't thank them all in the same exact

[4:25]manner you have to thank them in a way that's appropriate for

[4:31]them you know if your why for example your spouse gives you

[4:35]you know you want to thank your spouse for something you would

[4:41]give that person a flower right for instance but would you give

[4:45]a flower to your professor not necessarily if you want to buy

[4:50]a gift for your children to thank them for being good for

[4:54]doing their homework for getting a good GPA you have to look

[4:59]at their age what's appropriate for them and then give them the

[5:04]gift right well the mind and the intellect tells us we are

[5:07]surrounded with blessings who is the one who gave us all these

[5:15]blessings and secondly how do we thank the one who gave us

[5:18]those blessings allah subhana wa ta'ala is the one who gave us

[5:24]these blessings that we have brothers and sisters he is the source

[5:29]of all blessings in return we have an obligation to thank the

[5:35]Almighty God to express our gratitude to Allah subhana WA Ta'ala that

[5:43]is an intellectual obligation that we have to thank the one who

[5:47]gave us and we have to thank him the way that's appropriate

[5:53]to him how do you thank God in an appropriate way by

[5:57]respecting God what do you thank him because if you don't thank

[6:04]someone properly you can end up disrespecting that person right if you

[6:08]want to thank your professor and you go and you give them

[6:10]a Barbie doll is that respectful or not no that's disrespectful whether

[6:18]you're thanking someone and giving a gift to someone it has to

[6:23]be appropriate the same applies to Allah Allah has a very high

[6:26]status we have to thank God the way he's asked us to

[6:31]thank him and that is primarily through worshipping him through fulfilling his

[6:39]commandments and doing what he wants at the same time we have

[6:42]to thank Allah on a daily basis with our time by saying

[6:52]you examine the blessings that you have be thankful to God the

[7:02]hadith says that Nana's blessings are like wild animals have you seen

[7:07]a wild animal you need to leash the wild animal put him

[7:10]on a leash to control and tame that animal the blessings are

[7:17]like that they're wild they tend to run away from us the

[7:20]hadith says if you want to put the blessings on a leash

[7:27]keep them around you keep them with you then you have to

[7:30]constantly thank Allah by thanking God Allah will keep the blessings for

[7:38]you number one number two allah subhanaw taala will increase the blessings

[7:44]for you we have many many hadith and narrations about the significance

[7:50]of thanking the Almighty God one of the ways in which Allah

[7:54]protects you and your family members is by expressing your thanks by

[8:00]constantly being thankful to God in one hadith an imam al Karim

[8:05]Ali Salam he teaches us that one of the qualities of the

[8:11]people of the intellect is that they don't let the pleasures of

[8:14]this life to distract them from thanking their Creator because when you

[8:24]thank God constantly that helps you to stay away from sins why

[8:29]because weathers and sisters when we sin how do we sin what

[8:37]are we using to sin whatever you commit a sin whether it's

[8:41]something that you said something you heard something you saw an action

[8:44]you made when he sinned what are we using to get to

[8:52]that sin we're using the blessings of God if I send using

[8:58]my eyes who gave me these eyes a la it's a gift

[9:04]from God if I through my tongue commit sins by backbiting accusing

[9:10]others causing fitna causing trouble lying I'm using what to commit all

[9:17]these sins this gift that God has given me and the same

[9:23]with every sin the hadith tells us that whenever you sin you're

[9:28]actually using the gifts that God has given you to disobey God

[9:36]what an insult that is that's the greatest insult right the people

[9:42]of the intellect constantly thank God by thanking God they actually keep

[9:47]themselves away from sins because when you just thanked Allah for a

[9:51]blessing and now the opportunity comes for you to sin will you

[9:56]sit or you'll think twice about it you'll tell yourself I just

[10:01]thank God ten minutes ago an hour ago I thanked Allah for

[10:04]this blessing how am I going to use this same blessing to

[10:12]disobey Allah this protects us from sinning from doing that which is

[10:17]wrong so being thankful brothers and sisters is one of our obligations

[10:23]to be thankful to God and always know that how much ever

[10:30]you are thankful to God we can never do justice to the

[10:35]blessings that Allah has given us in the our out of a

[10:41]an amendment for saying on a salami says Allah if you give

[10:44]me an infinite life if I live the life of the whole

[10:49]world from beginning to end and I spend all of that time

[10:51]to thank you for one small Nariman one small gift that you've

[11:02]given me I can't as long as we realize this then we've

[11:06]done justice to the blessings of God because once allah subhanaw taala

[11:10]revealed to prophet musa honest anna allah told him Mousa ass corny

[11:24]I've given you thank me the way I deserve it you know

[11:31]what moosa said he said oh allah how can i fully thank

[11:37]you the way you deserve to be thanked when by thanking you

[11:42]i need to thank you a second time for giving me the

[11:47]opportunity to thank you Subhan Allah did you realize what moosa artists

[11:55]give me a blessing and i thank you the act of thanking

[12:00]you and itself is a blessing that i need to thank you

[12:07]for for allowing me to thank you for giving me the opportunity

[12:09]to thank you because there are millions of people they use your

[12:13]blessings o allah and they don't thank you but you have given

[12:18]me the tow vehicle the success to thank you so how can

[12:21]i really thank you what the act of thanking you requires another

[12:27]thanks a lot old him o musa if you realize that if

[12:30]you know that then you have thanked me the way I deserve

[12:35]it you fully thanked me I accept that from you as true

[12:37]thanks always remember that how much ever we thank Allah Subhanahu WA

[12:43]Ta'ala we can never do justice to the blessings that God had

[12:49]given has given us so make it appoint brothers and sisters every

[12:52]single day in the morning in the afternoon at night before you

[12:56]sleep thank allah subhanho wa taala so that's one level of thanking

[13:03]at the level of the tongue when you thank God another level

[13:06]is at the heart when you appreciate God's blessings but the third

[13:10]more important level is through your actions many people say alhamdulillah sugar

[13:18]vanilla and that's good but their actions don't show that they're thankful

[13:23]to God why because their action reveal that they're not using the

[13:33]gifts that God has given them when God has given you a

[13:35]gift the way to thank God is to use that gift if

[13:41]you give gift someone you give a brand-new car to your friend

[13:44]as a precious gift and then after a few years you go

[13:50]to your friend's house you see the car is parked in the

[13:51]garage and the dust has collected on it and he has not

[13:56]even touched the car will that make you happy or sad you'll

[14:00]be saddened right you're gonna tell your friend look I got you

[14:06]this gift for you to use it not for you to keep

[14:07]it in your garage you want to make me happy use the

[14:12]gift if we want to thank God it has to be practical

[14:15]gratitude such that we're using the gifts that God has given us

[14:23]for the right cause that's the best way to thank Allah now

[14:27]in our community brothers and sisters in our society God has given

[14:33]us so many resources one of the ways in which allah subhana

[14:37]wa ta'ala wants us to use his resources is a verse in

[14:44]the quran that he states what i want to a little bit

[14:47]early what taqwa collaborate work together when it comes to righteousness piety

[14:54]and goodness to use the resources collectively so the first part was

[15:02]thanks to give thanks to Allah but the second part is to

[15:08]give now you've taken the gifts from Allah how do you use

[15:12]those gifts how do you pay them back it's time for us

[15:17]to give if we're not giving if we're not using these resources

[15:20]allah subhanaw taala will hold us accountable allah tells us to collaborate

[15:26]to work together we as one society as one community we need

[15:35]to be united to reach out to others whether they're people of

[15:38]our school of thought of our faith or even other faiths we

[15:43]need to work together brothers and sisters if we do not work

[15:47]together we don't collaborate we cannot achieve progress you know as the

[15:52]old saying goes one hand cannot clap you need to you need

[15:58]to collaborate you need to have teamwork we have many challenges today

[16:02]in our society there is a style phobia there's corruption immorality there's

[16:08]violence around the world there is ignorance we need to collaborate as

[16:14]one society together work together in order to effectively and strongly address

[16:22]these challenges otherwise we will fail we can't do it by ourselves

[16:26]we need to have a strong program for outreach to reach out

[16:34]to other communities to members of other faiths yes to others to

[16:40]Christians to Jews to people of other faiths we need to reach

[16:43]out to them invite them over go visit them make a friendship

[16:48]with them we need to work together to protect ourselves our children

[16:53]and our future because the days are hard and sometimes when you

[16:59]think about all the challenges that are going on in society sometimes

[17:03]you see a dark future for our children we have to do

[17:09]something brothers and sisters we need to collaborate the most successful companies

[17:14]today are those companies that collaborate they don't do everything themselves let

[17:20]me give you one quick example you've all heard of Boeing Wright

[17:25]the company in Seattle that makes these beautiful airplanes the last airplane

[17:31]that Boeing made was the 787 it's a very interesting airplane do

[17:35]you know how many countries were involved in making this plane tens

[17:45]of countries tens of countries yes it's assembled here in the United

[17:50]States but so many parts were made in other countries Japan participate

[17:54]in making some parts china 40% of those parts came from China

[18:05]Spain made some parts Italy made some parts Korea made the wingtips

[18:11]for example the UK made the engine the rolls-royce engine you have

[18:16]so many countries that collaborated to make this plane that's intellect that's

[18:22]when you're using your resources to offer a good product and this

[18:29]applies to every aspect of our lives brothers and sisters when it

[18:32]comes to our community and building bridges with others don't think oh

[18:37]I can do it myself my family can do it my mosque

[18:41]can do it no the challenges are bigger than us our families

[18:46]our mosques our community centers we cannot do it ourselves what to

[18:51]I wonder why I didn't bit earlier with tough one the Quran

[18:57]says collaborate work together don't think you can do it yourself the

[19:03]challenges are too big so to protect ourselves our identity our children

[19:07]our future our religion we need to unite with others in our

[19:12]community it doesn't mean that you have to go and compromise your

[19:19]beliefs and do things differently and follow other paths no just build

[19:24]bridges learn from the experiences of others have friendships know your neighbor

[19:31]as they say know your society many of us were just strangers

[19:35]believe me we don't know anything about our society we have not

[19:37]have any we haven't had any outreach and this is wrong I'll

[19:44]conclude by sharing with you one interesting experience that I had in

[19:49]the month of Ramadan I was in Canada and Halifax I was

[19:56]there at a local mosque for the last two weeks of the

[19:59]month of Ramadan for the Roma Bahn programmes now just across the

[20:07]street from that mosque there is a church one night we had

[20:12]an interfaith program at the mosque and members of the you know

[20:16]Christian community they had participated from other faiths as well from universities

[20:20]as well and this one pastor a reverend he came from that

[20:24]church and he attended I got to know him we developed a

[20:30]personal relationship of friendship and then he invited me over to their

[20:34]church to go and speak to their church now he mentioned something

[20:38]interesting he's like for all these years we see people going to

[20:43]this mosque especially with their late-night programs because our programs are usually

[20:47]at night right their programs are usually during the day it's like

[20:51]oftentimes I'm passing by 8 p.m.

[20:56]9 p.m.

[20:54]11 p.m.

[20:55]12 a.m.

[20:57]and I see these Muslims you know going to this mosque and

[21:02]I don't even know what they're up to what they're doing he's

[21:04]like one day after all these years I said look these guys

[21:11]are our neighbors why shouldn't we stop by and say hi to

[21:14]them see who they are get to know them so he's like

[21:19]we stopped by with their program finished a group of Muslims were

[21:23]standing at the door and we had a discussion and I told

[21:26]them I'm your neighbor from that church and you know tell us

[21:30]about yourselves who are you he's like from that day this relationship

[21:35]started we came to know how sweet and wonderful these Muslims are

[21:41]all these years they were our neighbors but we never made an

[21:47]effort to get to know them so he asked me to go

[21:51]to their church and speak I gave about you know a 1520

[21:53]minute speech and people in that church brothers and sisters upon hearing

[21:58]just very simple teachings that the Prophet teaches us that we don't

[22:04]appreciate that much but others appreciate them more you could see the

[22:09]tears flowing down their cheeks tarah you know whom TV Raman Adam

[22:17]has the Quran says subhanAllah motherfu may not happen when they hear

[22:20]the words of truth they interact with it they accept it and

[22:26]you know after that event it's as if you know everyone was

[22:32]brothers and sisters after that event they came to the mosque we

[22:35]hosted them and they just changed their views you know some of

[22:43]them came they were crying they told us the media gives us

[22:46]a different image of you guys we viewed you negatively we don't

[22:52]know anything about you this is the first time we come to

[22:56]your house of worship we see you we talk to you you're

[23:01]good human beings we love you and what you stand for but

[23:04]we did not know about this just one simple interaction changed their

[23:10]view and they said well here to protect you if anything happens

[23:16]anyone wants to attack you we're here to protect you because we

[23:20]know you're good citizens you're good human beings you worship God and

[23:24]you love your religion and you have good values most of them

[23:28]don't know brothers and sisters but through outreach through ties we can

[23:34]make this happen so to be thankful to allah subhanahu wata'ala we

[23:39]have to use that in our actions use the resources that God

[23:44]has given you and in your society spread the values that you

[23:51]believe in spread the teachings the morality of the messenger of God

[23:55]show that to others in our society that is the best way

[24:00]to thank allah subhanho to allah if we don't god forbid Allah

[24:04]will consider us not to be thankful Allah will tell us I

[24:08]gave you an opportunity I gave you all these resources you have

[24:11]no excuse you have freedom there is no war you've got education

[24:18]you've got anything you can ask for what is your excuse we

[24:21]don't have an excuse on the day of judgement so let's take

[24:26]this spirit of the Thanksgiving by number one constantly being thankful to

[24:33]Allah expressing our gratitude to the blessings that - Allah has given

[24:39]us and secondly let's give let's give from our time from our

[24:42]energy from our resources to build bridges to build unity as one

[24:50]strong community will be much stronger our voice will count then we

[24:55]can save our future and save our children otherwise we see a

[24:59]lot of dangers in society our society today brothers and sisters is

[25:03]polarized there's so much Islamic phobia so much ignorance and misunderstandings if

[25:09]you want to protect the Muslim community it's only through outreach and

[25:14]building bridges with other communities you can't do it on yourself because

[25:21]the others are collaborating against us if we don't collaborate to protect

[25:28]our rights within years god knows what the picture will look like

[25:32]so let's be thankful to Allah for giving us all this all

[25:35]these blessings for giving us this wonderful opportunity and secondly let's use

[25:40]this opportunity in action the best way to thank God is to

[25:46]show it in action may Allah subhana WA Ta'ala bless you all

[25:49]brothers and sisters may Allah protect you all may Allah Subhanahu WA

[25:53]Ta'ala keep us all thankful by giving us a grateful thankful heart

[26:02]such that we use the blessings of God not to disobey God

[26:06]but to obey Allah Subhanahu WA Ta'ala oh allah allah sayidina muhammadin
