[2:58]morrow to the podium with you Lara silhouette I would be Rahim
[3:12]inertia Tony rajim bismillahi rahmani rahim alhamdu lillahi rabbil aalameen sarah wat
[3:23]was salam ala nabina habibi nuh aziz inna double Kozma muhammad wallahi
[3:30]italia bhi nahi lene al masoomeen sala wat I would like to
[3:39]relate to you the story of the covenants of the Prophet Muhammad
[3:43]peace and blessings be upon him the story begins in 1990 in
[3:51]1990 I'm an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto in Canada
[3:57]I am taking a course on philosophy of religion and the professor
[4:01]you know time comes to select a topic for the major essay
[4:08]in this class and i propose to write an essay about jihad
[4:11]in islam the professor accepts and I diligently get to work and
[4:16]I conduct all kinds of research and so on drunk from quranic
[4:21]verses and a hadith and so on in books of history in
[4:23]this essay I quoted what is known as the Ashton on a
[4:29]the Covenant of the Prophet Muhammad with the monks of Mount Sinai
[4:32]now this is one of the first documents that I was exposed
[4:38]to when I was a young man on a spiritual quest I
[4:43]started to study all kinds of different religions and Islam when I
[4:47]was 13 years of age and I eventually embraced Islam when I
[4:53]was 16 years of age and so was during those years that
[4:55]I came across this document the document that is truly remarkable it
[4:59]was a covenant that the Prophet made with the monks from st.
[5:07]catherine's monastery in the Sinai in in Egypt and he granted them
[5:11]freedom of belief freedom of religion he commanded the Muslims to protect
[5:18]their monasteries and to protect their churches and if they they started
[5:23]to fall apart to help to rebuild them in order to keep
[5:31]these people faithful and loyal allies to the Muslims so it was
[5:35]a truly remarkable document in terms of its care and its compassion
[5:38]and its justice so I quote this document in this essay I
[5:45]submit the essay to the professor and eventually I get it back
[5:48]and I believe I got twenty-nine percent on it it was like
[5:53]twenty nine percent or like thirty two percent it was like a
[5:55]30-page essay it was very well researched or so I thought but
[6:00]I was a humble young man and I've always respected by teachers
[6:05]that I've always honored elders and so it hurt but I accepted
[6:08]it and I came to the conclusion that perhaps my paper did
[6:14]deserve an F so I complete my undergraduate studies my honors be
[6:19]a my MA my PhD I continue my religious studies you know
[6:27]for decades and we're about in 2009 and so I you know
[6:30]I've been an assistant professor and associate professor I'm now a full
[6:35]professor and a publisher is interested in publishing an anthology of my
[6:38]scholarly articles so I start going through old essays that I wrote
[6:43]and things that i published for this anthology I come across my
[6:47]essay the first essay I ever wrote at the university level on
[6:50]jihad in Islam and I look at it and I say you
[6:55]know in retrospect this doesn't look so bad this is pretty good
[6:58]so what do i do I take this essay and I submit
[7:03]it for peer-reviewed publication and guess what it's revered it's reviewed by
[7:08]peers it's reviewed by scholars is reviewed by academics and professors and
[7:13]it comes back favorable absolutely will publish this it was at that
[7:18]point that I realized that hmm it seems that that professor was
[7:22]prejudiced against Muslims so this was perhaps my real taste of Islamophobia
[7:27]and so after the original version of my first University essay was
[7:32]published I said you know what and this was written before we
[7:38]had this problem of terrorism and so on I mean for God's
[7:40]sake this is 1990 alright this is not after September 11th or
[7:45]anything I said you know I really should expand upon this essay
[7:49]and I was no longer satisfied with having an english translation of
[7:56]a primary document i wanted the original arabic document so i start
[8:00]this quest to locate the document the orig the original ahead neba
[8:05]we the original Ashton ami and Arabic and so I start doing
[8:08]research and research and research and I come across a document that
[8:14]was purported to be the Sinai covenant but then I read it
[8:17]and I soon realize that this is a completely different covenant the
[8:21]Covenant in question was published in 1630 in Paris by a merit
[8:28]by a Maronite priest by the name of Gabrielle see Anita and
[8:33]it was published in 1630 it was republished it was a best-seller
[8:38]for for for centuries in Europe this covenant of the Prophet so
[8:46]I realized that this is not the document that I'm looking for
[8:49]that document had actually been brought back by a priest by the
[8:52]name of Pacific de pubmed pacific de pave or Father's calendar now
[8:59]he had been traveling throughout the Ottoman world in the Safavid Empire
[9:04]and during the course of his travels he discovered a letter of
[9:08]the Prophet apparently it was discovered in a monastery in the Levant
[9:13]in the area of Palestine Lebanon Syria according to some scholars he
[9:19]found it at the monastery of Mount Carmel and so he brought
[9:23]it back it was a letter of protection that the Prophet had
[9:25]given the Christians of that area he brought it back to Europe
[9:31]he presented it to the King of France who was famous for
[9:33]collecting ancient manuscripts from the Middle East he gave it to this
[9:38]priest Gabriela see Anita who published it in the original Arabic along
[9:44]with a latin translation so I continue trying to find the original
[9:49]of this document and I come across another one allegedly the Sinai
[9:53]covenant but I soon realized that no in fact this is a
[9:59]document that was found in the cathedral of new geneva in isfahan
[10:01]in the early 20th century by a scholar was conducting research there
[10:06]and so this was a copy of a covenant of the profit
[10:11]that was certified and authenticated by shah abbas on the authority of
[10:17]imam ja'far asada khali salam and so on and so this was
[10:19]another document and so i continued my quest and i find yet
[10:25]another document a covenant of protection that was given to the assyrian
[10:29]christians finally I find a book in which there is a picture
[10:35]of this HD nami and so I contact the publisher and I
[10:37]say would it be possible for you to send me a high
[10:42]resolution copy of this document and she says well I can't but
[10:45]perhaps father Justin can help you at that point I finger I
[10:51]figure that father Justin probably just a parish priests you know an
[10:56]Irish Catholic or something from Boston who perhaps had traveled to st.
[11:01]catherine's monastery and took a picture so I email father I email
[11:04]father Justin and I say is there any way I can get
[11:09]a copy of this document and he said sure just let me
[11:13]go downstairs and it was at that point that I realized that
[11:16]I was corresponding with father Justin of Sinai from the Holy Council
[11:20]of fathers from st.
[11:24]catherine's monastery in Egypt he went downstairs to the lobby of the
[11:27]monastery took a picture of the document and sent it to me
[11:30]as an attachment ma sha Allah Allah works in wonderful ways and
[11:38]so finally I had a copy of this document and I asked
[11:40]him father Justin are there other covenants of the Prophet out there
[11:47]and he says yes they have a copy at Mount Athos on
[11:49]the sacred mountain in the monastery of simona Petra in Greece he
[11:53]said but good luck getting access to that document we are Greek
[11:59]Orthodox and we can't even get access to their archives so you
[12:03]know good luck getting access so at that time the book was
[12:07]published my critical study and everything the history of this document questions
[12:11]of authenticity commentary studying them according to the rules of hadith studies
[12:17]and I'm invited to Georgetown University in Washington to give a lecture
[12:22]on the covenants of the Prophet during the course of that lecture
[12:25]I made a joke I poked fun at the monastery of Mount
[12:30]Athos I said that compared to the monastery of seminole Petra at
[12:39]Harvard University is like an open admissions Community College by the time
[12:46]I returned home from that speaking tour there was an email in
[12:50]my inbox from a person I didn't recognize by the name of
[12:56]monk cosmos and he says I hear you're looking for something and
[13:00]he says we have not only one but two copies of the
[13:07]Covenant of the Prophet now these are covenants that were never revealed
[13:10]to the world before that they have housed in this monastery for
[13:14]centuries and centuries and centuries and Masha Allah he was kind enough
[13:19]to forward me to high resolution copies of these covenants and so
[13:24]the quest continues you know there are some people who suggested in
[13:35]the 1600 that Gabriela see Anita had his time up dr.
[13:39]Bengali how much time do I have a couple minutes ok so
[13:45]that's not the end of the story because the story continues after
[13:49]the publication of the book there are some people who suggested that
[13:54]this Capuchin priest Pacific de prevent others Gallagher had forged this covenant
[14:01]he made it up and so I set out to find the
[14:06]original copy that he brought back from the monastery of Mount Carmel
[14:10]and so I said where I tried to figure out where did
[14:15]it end up and I said well maybe it ended up in
[14:20]the King's library and then I said oh French Revolution they burned
[14:23]all the libraries and they did indeed however a large portion of
[14:28]his collection survived then it is now in the National Library of
[14:32]France in Paris and so I'm going through an ancient manuscript filled
[14:40]with ancient Christian documents i look at the end X because it's
[14:43]been indexed by the librarians there's no sign of anything I flip
[14:46]through it flip through it flip through it and what did I
[14:50]find at the end of this manuscript a copy of the Covenant
[14:53]of the pratha Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the world the
[14:56]original copy that had been brought back by father scavenger that was
[15:03]already several centuries old so I confirmed that he did indeed bring
[15:09]back a covenant from the Middle East so after I give the
[15:12]lecture at Georgetown I'm invited all over the place I'm invited to
[15:18]to Europe I speak in France and in Belgium and the Netherlands
[15:21]and the United Kingdom and other countries I meet a Syrian priest
[15:27]by the name of Reverend Naveen Nasser and I give this presentation
[15:32]on the covenants and he says you know what I saw a
[15:35]covenant of the Prophet say mashallah where where he says st.
[15:41]George and who made in Syria in the monastery they have one
[15:45]on the wall and so I contact the monastery and the abbot
[15:53]at the time was father Dennis kenos and I asked him about
[15:56]this covenant and he sent me a copy of the Covenant and
[16:01]it's virtually identical to the one that the priest had brought back
[16:06]to France in the 1600s and this is a monastery that has
[16:09]been under siege besieged by these tech fury terrorists can you believe
[16:16]that surrounded by people who profess to be Muslims who are hell-bent
[16:21]on destroying this monastery and killing all of the the priests and
[16:25]all of the monks and yet their most cherished possession it's priceless
[16:30]to them is on their wall and it's a letter from the
[16:37]Prophet Muhammad guaranteeing them protection for their lives and their property and
[16:43]the religion in their faith so I will wrap up my little
[16:45]presentation on that note Salaam alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
