[0:25]we continue our journey into the life of the holy prophet previously
[0:33]we examined snippets of the prophet saw ibadah the prophet's worship the
[0:40]prophet is our role model so we want to know how the
[0:45]prophet worshipped allah subhanahu wa how is it that the prophet sallallahu
[0:52]alaihi found time for prayer and for ibadah one very beautiful hadith
[0:59]in the book of tafsir ali ibn ibrahim it's a book on
[1:05]the tafseer of the holy quran he narrates this hadith from his
[1:09]father ibrahim ibn hashim from ibn abi the prophet was in the
[1:31]house in the room of um when it was her turn her
[1:37]night because the prophet would divide the knights equally amongst his wives
[1:40]so that night was the night of um she could not find
[1:48]him he was not in the room nasa that she became jealous
[1:59]you know maybe he is spending time with another of his wives
[2:07]so she went searching for him because that's her night so she
[2:11]does not want the prophet to go you know to another house
[2:15]by the way um as we've examined before was a very righteous
[2:19]lady and the difference between her and other wives of the prophet
[2:26]is that the other wives of the prophet such as ayasha and
[2:29]hafsa according to surat their envy and their jealousy led them to
[2:34]god's disobedience it allowed for their hearts to go astray in tatum
[2:42]allah tells them you have to repent because your hearts have strayed
[2:48]um even though sometimes um experienced normal jealousy or let's call it
[2:56]envy it was not to the point that it would push her
[3:01]away from the path of allah subhana wa to allah she just
[3:03]went and searched for the prophet she did not conspire she did
[3:07]not cause him headaches she did not disobey him so that's very
[3:10]important to note that sometimes we human beings we have emotions we
[3:17]may experience jealousy we may experience envy and sometimes it's uncontrollable that's
[3:21]okay allah subhanahu ta'ala is not going to hold you accountable for
[3:27]that but once you act upon your jealousy that's when it becomes
[3:32]sinful is now searching for the prophet sallallahu alaihi when she found
[3:36]him in one of the corners of the house and the darkness
[3:41]of the night he was raising his hands and crying this is
[3:47]the best of allah's creation and he cries at night what did
[3:52]he say oh allah all the good things that you've given me
[4:02]that benefit my dunya and akhra do not take it away from
[4:06]me oh allah do not ever allow an enemy or someone who
[4:18]is jealous of me to gain victory over me and then to
[4:21]rejoice at my loss is when you've saved me from something never
[4:32]put me back in danger never allow evil to find its way
[4:38]to me allah never leave me to fend for myself to protect
[4:47]myself you always be my protector and guardian so um she found
[4:52]the prophet sallallahu alaihi in the corner of the house making the
[4:57]supplication at night in this hadith when she heard this from the
[5:07]prophet she started to cry such that the prophet he noticed her
[5:10]crying so he ended his worship and he came to her why
[5:15]are you crying she told him may my parents be sacrificed for
[5:23]you ya rasulallah walim why should i not cry and you have
[5:29]such a high position allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has forgiven all your
[5:33]sins you don't even have a sin and yet you ask allah
[5:39]subhanahu wa ta'ala to forgive you you ask allah not to take
[5:44]away the good things in your life you ask allah to not
[5:49]let the enemies rejoice at your loss and you have such a
[5:56]great status that made me cry it's as if um did not
[5:59]expect someone at the status of the prophet to humble himself so
[6:03]much before allah the prophet told her ya'am what gives me safety
[6:10]and security even if i'm the messenger of allah i have to
[6:15]keep my position it's not that you achieve a position and that's
[6:19]it you know how sometimes when you achieve a high let's say
[6:24]academic status you have to get re-certified can you say that's it
[6:30]i got my doctorate degree i got my teaching degree i'm set
[6:32]for life no you have to get re-certified there are some professions
[6:38]every two years you have to get re-certified because they need to
[6:41]make sure that you are maintaining that status in essence the prophet
[6:45]was teaching um salama that every minute of my life i have
[6:50]to get re-certified just because i'm a messenger doesn't mean i made
[6:55]it khalas what gives me safety and comfort that this will stay
[6:58]maybe one split second i get distracted from allah and i'll lose
[7:03]what i have.
[7:13]the prophet says that eunice ibn metta prophet eunice the one who
[7:17]was swallowed by the will for one moment one moment he kind
[7:22]of got distracted from god because of the evil of his people
[7:27]he left in anger i'm not going back to these people and
[7:29]he thought maybe that he'll be saved for a moment he was
[7:37]distracted from allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and the prophet sallallahu alaihi states
[7:40]we know what happened to prophet yunus we know what was his
[7:47]fate for one second for one moment he was distracted and he
[7:51]almost died and if it was not for his tasbih him asking
[7:55]allah for forgiveness he would have stayed in the stomach of the
[8:00]well until the day of judgment as the holy quran states so
[8:04]the prophet salallahu alaihi was expressing this beautiful prayer that every single
[8:10]moment i have to get re-certified it's not just a position position
[8:16]that i keep for life every moment i have to honor this
[8:20]position and i have to work for it this sheds light on
[8:25]the prophets philosophy of ibaad and why is it that the human
[8:30]being needs constantly to worship allah subhanahu wa ta'ala now when we
[8:35]look at salah and the prophet's relationship with salah because we're now
[8:40]examining the prophet and worship we find that even in sunni sources
[8:45]this is mentioned so i'll quote for you hadith from sunni sources
[8:49]in which the prophet would consider salah the ultimate relief for instance
[8:56]when he would be in a state of distress salaam alaikum when
[9:00]he would be in a state of sadness the prophet would say
[9:05]arachna bihaya bilal what does arachna mean relieve us with it with
[9:17]what what's the pronoun it here salah bilal in essence what was
[9:23]the prophet asking him to do you said it when the prophet
[9:27]felt depressed he would tell bilal relieve us relieve us call the
[9:32]adhan so we get up and pray when the tragedies would surround
[9:37]him he would say when he would hear that someone passed away
[9:42]he really considered salah the peak of his relief during his day
[9:48]can i say that about my salah that's how the prophet salallahu
[9:54]alaihi would pray and when the time for the adhan would come
[9:58]the prophet would not know anyone around him so this hadith is
[10:04]mentioned by abuzar ad in his in his book basically he says
[10:16]when the prophet would hear the call to prayer it's as if
[10:22]he does not know anyone even some of the wives of the
[10:26]prophet they've confirmed this we're sitting with the prophet we're having an
[10:29]enjoyable time he seems so intimate with us he's part of the
[10:33]discussion he's leading maybe the discussion we feel like he's an intimate
[10:38]friend he knows us all and he gives us full attention the
[10:41]minute he hears the adhan he gets up as if he doesn't
[10:46]know anyone around him subhanallah that's how he interacted with salah are
[10:51]we like that or if when our in our saharas and it's
[10:56]continuing for hours and hours no he doesn't know anyone around him
[11:11]everyone turns into a stranger i don't know you you don't know
[11:16]me i have now my salah doesn't matter what i'm doing that's
[11:21]how he would treat sada and everyone knew that there is one
[11:26]hadith my dear brothers and sisters that's very striking about the ibadah
[11:30]of the prophet too often we forget the sight of the prophet
[11:33]you know normally when we think of the prophet we think of
[11:38]the major events that happen the migration the persecution the battles remember
[11:41]the prophets had the prophet had a very important side the ibadah
[11:45]of the prophet and the prophets ibadah surpasses any other creation normally
[11:50]we know let's say imam zayn al-abidin the prophet is the greatest
[11:57]ibadah in history they found one of the companions of the prophet
[12:01]and by the way this hadith is even mentioned in bukhari this
[12:07]hadith states that haifa once spent the night with the prophet you
[12:12]know how the prophet spent that night it's a it's a very
[12:16]interesting hadith of course from me not in bukhari the prophet stood
[12:25]up he got up to pray salat ali you know how the
[12:31]prophet would praise salah today if we pray it 11 minutes fast
[12:35]we think we've made a big achievement and it's even burdensome for
[12:40]us the prophet prayed salah to layla after salat so hadith says
[12:46]i went with him he started his salah the prophet started to
[12:56]recite surat al-baqarah how many verses of surat al-baqarah 286 hodeis said
[13:02]i thought in my mind he's going to do sujud at verse
[13:07]100.
[13:07]remember it's an affiliate you don't have to complete the for the
[13:13]full surah so i thought to myself he's going to stop at
[13:17]a hundred there's no way he's going to continue the whole surah
[13:37]now imagine how many chapters the prophet is reading standing on his
[13:44]feet in the first req then says [Music] he doesn't just read
[13:54]like that any ayah that contains mercy he asks allah ya allah
[14:00]give me mercy by the way in your salah you can always
[14:01]do a dua in the middle of your recitation did you know
[14:06]that for instance you're resigning a surah right and it's about the
[14:08]fire of hell or the rahman you can say ya allah make
[14:13]a dua between you yourself and allah when you supplicate in your
[14:17]salah it does not invalidate your salah it's if you talk it
[14:21]invalidates your salah you talk worldly talk but if it's a dua
[14:24]that you make any time in the raku and the sujud between
[14:26]the verses it does not invalidate your salah because that is supplication
[14:32]to allah and salah itself is a type of supplication so you
[14:36]can do that the prophet whenever he would stop at a verse
[14:39]in salat in the holy quran he would ask allah for rahm
[14:47]whenever he would come to a verse about adam o allah protect
[14:53]me from this when you read the quran do this he would
[15:01]say subhan allah he would interact he feels as if allah is
[15:05]really talking to him listen to the following now imagine if you
[15:10]read baqarah surtil that's what about 100 pages in our script today
[15:18]that's like 1 6 of the quran okay the prophet read those
[15:24]surahs and he's not just reading them fast he would stop at
[15:28]each verse and ask allah for rahm how long does that take
[15:30]haditha says then the prophet went into ruku his rook was as
[15:41]long as him standing and reading all these chapters let's say if
[15:47]it took two hours the took another two hours can you imagine
[15:53]this was the salah to layla of the prophet on some nights
[16:07]very long took a long time then he did the same thing
[16:11]in the second then hidefa says i estimated it says my estimate
[16:22]that just two raka's of the salat it took the prophet six
[16:27]to seven hours and this was during the days when the prophet
[16:33]was hungry and he was poor he barely had anything during the
[16:39]day the prophet didn't sleep somebody if today if i do this
[16:43]i'll fall in my bed the next day 12 hours he has
[17:00]a family he has a family he has grandchildren now he wants
[17:05]to be a role model for them um the house affairs the
[17:11]prophet would help out in the house six to seven hours he's
[17:21]just standing his feet would crack when you stand on your feet
[17:29]for so much swells and cracks what's and then in this hadith
[17:35]i shall tell him why are you doing this to this to
[17:38]yourself when allah has forgiven you he would just say one word
[17:43]as we mentioned last time i just want to show my appreciation
[17:48]to allah i want to show my thankfulness to allah subhanahu wa
[17:52]sometimes sometimes ask those by the ways if you really want to
[17:57]understand this sometimes it's helpful to talk to people who are in
[18:03]love severely you know severe crazy love it kind of sheds light
[18:07]on some of the even though it's different of course as someone
[18:10]who's severely in love they'll tell you that sometimes i'm willing to
[18:14]deliberately go through difficulty for my loved one just to show that
[18:20]person how much i love him i could get a job done
[18:25]the easy route sometimes i'll take the hard route just to show
[18:27]that person how much i worked hard for you ask people in
[18:31]love they'll tell you that i know you might think this is
[18:35]crazy does it make sense but no people who are loved this
[18:37]makes sense to them the prophet stands on his feet just to
[18:39]express his love to allah and to thank allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[18:45]so this is a glimpse of how the prophet would pray sometimes
[18:50]at night in difficulty in near starvation that's how he would pray
[18:54]but it is the salah my dear brothers and sisters that gave
[18:57]energy to the prophet it's the salah and specifically the power of
[19:05]sujud you know allah and surah verses 97 to 98 allah teaches
[19:09]the prophet what to do when he's depressed when you're depressed what
[19:14]do you do right you cry yes but if people are saying
[19:19]ill things about you they're attacking you launching verbal accusations what do
[19:25]you do you want to fight back this is what allah teaches
[19:30]his greatest messenger allah states in verse 97 and we know that
[19:42]your chest becomes tight what does that mean your chest becomes tight
[19:46]you feel depressed you're hurt because of what they say so what
[19:52]do you do go kill them i glorify allah and i thank
[20:05]allah with his praise what could mean assad glorify allah and fall
[20:10]into sajud and worship allah until the comes to you this is
[20:20]the recipe that allah gave to the prophet this is how he
[20:24]made it during those difficult days remember the persecution in mecca the
[20:28]prophet for so many hours he'd be prostrating by himself in masjid
[20:32]al-haram hurting no one just prostrating abuja would come he would slander
[20:37]the prophet they would bring the intestines of of the camel that
[20:42]was just slaughtered and they would basically contaminate his clothes sometimes he
[20:47]would push the prophet harass the prophet how did the prophet stay
[20:52]strong it was through the power of the sujud through ibadah through
[20:55]the night prayer specifically the prophet sallallahu alaihi was able to withstand
[21:02]those challenges and this is a lesson for us as one merger
[21:05]you know would say he went through a lot of difficulties many
[21:10]people gave him a hard time he was really oppressed so one
[21:15]of his relatives saw him at night in the middle of the
[21:21]night praying and crying he told him what are you doing what's
[21:25]bothering you he said i'm striking them i'm striking them with the
[21:29]arrows of the night i don't have an army that can defend
[21:36]me i don't have a worldly power position to defend me but
[21:39]i have the hibada at night through this i am asking allah
[21:46]to protect me from the evil ones this is what we learn
[21:49]from the prophet sallallahu alaihi yes because people are against the truth
[21:59]they're either ignorant or arrogant they know he represents the truth not
[22:03]everyone wants the truth people are comfortable with their evil ways they
[22:07]don't want someone to disrupt that for them the prophet brought reform
[22:12]they didn't like it the elites of mecca did not like that
[22:16]reform because they were privileged they took advantage of the poor and
[22:20]the slaves and women now the prophets bringing a system of equality
[22:23]they don't want equality i want to call the shots i want
[22:27]to get the privileges that's one reason why they stood against him
[22:31]one other question did the prophet marry all for all of his
[22:36]wives together or when one died he would marry another one sometimes
[22:38]some would die then he'd remarry but at one point he had
[22:42]nine wives together yes when the prophet passed away he left nine
[22:50]wives so yes nine wives simultaneously he was married to them at
[22:54]one time yes towards the end of his life yes yes of
[22:59]course that was one of his biggest tests managing those nights no
[23:05]for the prophet is an exception we've talked about that before for
[23:11]the other for other muslims yes the maximum is four four permanent
[23:14]wives but not the prophet allah subhanahu wa allah commanded him to
[23:17]marry more than four wives so that's an exception for him would
[23:21]he marry at one time we talked about it in detail last
[23:26]year yes in detail why did the prophet marry those wives yeah
[23:30]there's there's a lot of wisdom behind it there are many reasons
[23:35]behind it now as we talk about the sujud the prophet sallallahu
[23:40]alaihi highlights the importance of sujud so according to this hadith from
[23:46]ebin he says i used to spend the night sometimes with the
[23:52]prophet salallahu to help him maybe he needs something he needs water
[23:56]to do with so he told me how can i compensate you
[24:02]you've been serving me now ask me for something some of those
[24:15]companions were smart the prophet told them ask anything i'll give you
[24:18]he said i want to be with you in paradise that's big
[24:23]now you're asking the prophet for something big the prophet sallallahu alaihi
[24:31]says okay you know you i asked you what do you want
[24:33]you said i have to honor that.
[24:40]help me with one thing prolong your sujud increase your sadhu help
[24:47]me out you can't just be with me in paradise like that
[24:51]help me out and the way that you do so is be
[24:55]sincere in your abbaja and prolong your sujud see the power of
[24:58]sujud out of everything else the prophet told him prolong your sujud
[25:01]that means it has such a great effect in the way of
[25:07]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in another hadith this was in sahih muslim
[25:13]the first hadith this was now from an imam he says a
[25:18]man came to the prophet they told them my sins are many
[25:24]my deeds are little what do you do now i don't have
[25:32]a lot of deeds i have so many sins.
[25:41]have you seen during the fall how the leaves fall from the
[25:45]trees that's what sujud does to your sins they keep falling from
[25:51]from you and another interesting hadith he says amen came to the
[25:58]prophet sallallahu alaihi he told him teach me that makes allah love
[26:09]me and to prolong my life and so i would be resurrected
[26:31]with you ya rasulullah what deer is that so these are six
[26:35]that he asked for imam ali says the prophet salallahu if you
[26:47]want people to love you be good to them for us what
[26:55]does watford mean reject what's in their hands what does that mean
[26:59]reject what's in the hands of people well that's a very specific
[27:07]example don't take bribes it's more general than that don't take anything
[27:12]from people many times we have our eyes on what's in people's
[27:18]hands we want them to give us money help us out you
[27:23]really want everyone to love you don't ask anyone a favor people
[27:27]then will have so much respect for you because many people sometimes
[27:33]they keep begging this person and that person for favors you kind
[27:36]of impact your dignity when you do that don't let a worldly
[27:42]need sacrifice your dignity and if you want allah subhanahu ta'ala to
[27:46]increase your wealth pay zakat if you want allah to give you
[27:52]health pay sadaqa if you want allah to prolong your life engage
[27:56]in sin and here's the point and if you want allah to
[28:02]resurrect you with me with rasulallah what do you do engage in
[28:13]long sujuds for us if we do as subdued 30 seconds that's
[28:17]it it's too much 10 minutes 20 minutes i know people they
[28:24]would recite the entire dua of kumail in one sujud every single
[28:29]week that type of ibadah keeps you connected to allah subhanahu wa
[28:36]ta'ala and so we find the prophet was very big there were
[28:39]some times of the month the prophet was in continuous like month
[28:44]of ramadan during the last days of the prophet's life during the
[28:49]last 10 days of ramadan from you know the night of power
[28:54]until the lailatul the prophet would take his bed sheet you know
[28:59]that sheet that he would sleep on and he would fold it
[29:03]no sleeping for 10 days at night the prophet would not sleep
[29:06]the last 10 nights of the month of ramadan the prophet would
[29:11]not sleep and he would do takaf in the masjid 10 days
[29:13]of non-stop ibada in the masjid that's how he spent the last
[29:18]third of the month of ramadan so we find that the prophet
[29:25]salallahu alaihi significantly his time to ibadah with all of his you
[29:31]know obligations with everything that he had to do the prophet salallahu
[29:37]alaihi gave many many hours every day for ibadah and this is
[29:41]a lesson for us what about the wudu of the prophet salallahu
[29:46]now as we're talking about the ibadah i want to recite to
[29:49]you a hadith from al-imam al-baqarah he captures to us the wallu
[29:54]of the prophet how the prophet sallallahu alaihi did abolution he says
[30:00]to his companions do you want to know how the prophet did
[30:05]with now imam al-baqarah had to say this because there were distortions
[30:11]made at that time where there were other other schools of thought
[30:14]claiming the prophet did with in a different way even though had
[30:18]been changed so imam al-baqarah is telling us i'll tell you exactly
[30:21]how the prophet did with we said yes tell us so he
[30:27]said bring me a container of water we brought it for him
[30:30]then he basically rolled up his sleeve then with his right hand
[30:41]his right palm he inserted it in the water and then he
[30:45]says if your hand is pure do that if it's not just
[30:50]purify it then put it in the container then he put it
[30:54]on his jabin if you want the sunnah when you wash your
[30:59]face when you start your wudu the first area that you pour
[31:02]the water is where normally what do people do anywhere in the
[31:05]face right which is okay as long as you cover the face
[31:09]vertically that's fine but it's what's to happen to start with the
[31:13]jabin the jabin is not the forehead here where is it the
[31:16]side of the forehead this area we call this jabin the prophet
[31:20]would start by pouring water on the jabin this side and that
[31:25]side so pour the water just beneath the hairline on the jabin
[31:36]then basically he would come down his blessed beard until he would
[31:43]wash his face and then he would take with his left palm
[31:47]some water and he would pour it on his elbow start from
[31:51]the elbow and you would go down and then he would wash
[31:54]his left arm and then he would say with the remnant moisture
[32:00]don't acquire new moisture with the remnant moisture wipe your head right
[32:06]feet a left feet this is how the prophet salallahu alaihi did
[32:12]his unfortunately many have changed that then the imam says what's the
[32:26]very bare minimum for three times you draw water from a container
[32:34]one for your face one for your arm one for your other
[32:39]arm that's it that's a very basic some people think that ulthu
[32:42]means you drench yourself in water and i've seen some people they
[32:46]take scoop after scoop of water like 10 15 20 washing the
[32:48]face you don't have to do that sometimes that could be a
[32:52]waste of water seriously imam says that's enough the prophet saw was
[32:57]very simple in fact in one hadith he says let me show
[33:03]you the law of the prophet salallahu alaihi he took some water
[33:09]washed his face one scoop of water his right arm one scoop
[33:12]of water his left arm he did the message he's like that's
[33:17]how the prophet did you could do this in 20 seconds very
[33:19]simple especially at that time when running water was not available they
[33:23]live in a desert environment and so even in wulu conserve water
[33:27]don't waste too much water that's the water of the prophet salallahu
[33:33]i think honestly we've complicated by the way and i i don't
[33:38]know if i should say this but even at the level of
[33:43]scholars they want to do be cautious sometimes their uldu takes minutes
[33:48]and minutes well it's good that you're trying to be muhtat but
[33:52]look this was the of the prophet he was very brief in
[33:56]his will so just learn from the prophet no i need to
[33:58]make sure that okay be reasonable you know as as one would
[34:04]always comment when that person would see another scholar you know trying
[34:09]to rub his arm like 50 times to make sure he got
[34:13]everywhere so basically his wife told him look the water is not
[34:16]scared of your skin [Laughter] don't worry you got it covered the
[34:21]water is there so the prophet would be very brief in his
[34:24]will he would not complicate it today a lot of people privately
[34:30]come to me they have ocd with this stuff ocd with tahara
[34:34]ocd that's documented in our hadith sources so the prophet sallallahu alaihi
[34:48]when he would do the the uh with it's a long dua
[34:53]but just snippets of it when he would wash his face he
[34:56]would say oh allah illuminate my face on the day of judgment
[35:02]when many faces many faces will be darkened then when the prophet
[35:06]saw allah would wash his right arm he would say oh allah
[35:09]give me my book in my right hand on that day when
[35:14]you give the believers their book and then you know on the
[35:19]left hand there is a dua when wiping the head there is
[35:21]a dua when wiping the feet there is fix me on on
[35:25]the day of judgment so yes the prophet would recite those duas
[35:28]and it's highly recommended to recite these doors it's called the we
[35:33]have several versions of them some of them from the prophet some
[35:36]of them from the imams at least read them print them put
[35:39]it you know on your kitchen cabinet next to the sink where
[35:42]you normally do will do from and read it once in a
[35:47]while brings barakah to your life right now yes yes many types
[36:08]of zikr they would say one of them is like for 300
[36:14]times or a thousand times they would say something like that for
[36:26]allah or you just talk to allah to supplicate so yeah we
[36:35]have all these dikkas that's was to have in the sujud and
[36:38]can you well like pray for someone of course of course you
[36:43]can pray for someone you can pray for your family pray for
[36:46]us pray for anything in fact the best position to pray for
[36:50]is sujud now remember we talked about the night prayer and how
[36:55]the prophet saw allah gave significance to it yes brother you can
[36:59]do this yes you can do this in wa of course you're
[37:02]doing your wajib salah in the last sujud let's say you'd like
[37:07]to say a hundred times you can do by all means supplication
[37:12]yes you okay you ask for yes you can any time in
[37:16]salah any point in salah you can supplicate to allah we have
[37:19]hadith about that no it does not have to be in arabic
[37:27]most scholars say that you start in arabic make an arabic dialect
[37:31]then use any language that you would like anything that falls under
[37:35]the label dua in any language you can do so in your
[37:38]saju talk in your own language with allah that's fine that does
[37:42]not invalidate your prayer because you're supplicating to allah that's valid but
[37:46]that's after you say the arabic vikir say subhana rabbi allah don't
[38:02]stretch it too long you know say a prayer two three minutes
[38:07]of me or something else then when you're done do sajda and
[38:12]then you know do a very long sujud that would be better
[38:16]if you want to follow the sunnah of the prophet and the
[38:17]imams yes yes after you finish for you know 10 minutes 20
[38:28]minutes 30 minutes so remember the night prayer and the prophet sallallahu
[38:34]alaihi let's talk a little bit about that because we gave you
[38:36]a glimpse of sometimes how you would pray the night prayer according
[38:41]to the testimony of hadith there is a verse in suratul islam
[38:49]79 in which allah commands the prophet sallallahu alaihi to spend the
[38:53]night in worship and from the night engage in what is called
[39:08]tahajjud what does the mean the comes from the word hudud hujud
[39:15]in arabic means what sleeping no sleeping is called hujud so if
[39:23]you bring it in its basic form in arabic it means sleeping
[39:26]but when you put it in form when you say tahedju means
[39:33]fighting sleep to fight sleep to avoid sleep to stay awake so
[39:40]tahedjud means what linguistically fighting sleep you keep yourself awake now in
[39:49]our islamic literature tahajjud specifically refers to ibadah at night when you're
[39:54]awake not watching netflix no that's not tahajjud even though linguistically it
[39:59]is you're fighting sleep but that's not what it means to hedjud
[40:02]in our islamic literature means to engage in supplication and in prayer
[40:09]and quran so the holy quran says from the night to hag
[40:15]jed due to fight ward off sleep be with it what's it
[40:20]not salah even though he's doing the salah but directly what's the
[40:26]uh pronoun referring to do to hajju with what quran women at
[40:35]night fight off sleep stay awake with the holy quran recite the
[40:40]holy quran what does nafila mean linguistically extra anything that's extra additional
[40:51]ziada for you scholars have understood from this lect for you and
[40:58]also other hadiths that salat and the tahajud was for all other
[41:06]muslims salat is mustahab there's one exception in history there's one man
[41:11]in history upon whom salat alain was mandatory to observe and that
[41:15]is who prophet muhammad sallallahu alaihi he had to observe salah it
[41:18]was wajib on him just like the daily prayers was not optional
[41:23]for him allah commanded him in this verse that you uphold the
[41:28]night prayer so it's what it was yes they of course never
[41:37]skipped it but it was not wajib on them we understand from
[41:41]the quran and the tafseer of these verses that it was only
[41:44]wajib on the prophet not the imams it was highly muslim for
[41:48]them but it was not mandatory so this is a hakum that's
[41:54]specific to the prophet sallallahu alaihi yes i know a guy who
[41:58]is really religious and he's from iraq actually and he's told me
[42:01]about three years ago he said i'm going back to imam jaffar
[42:08]or something and he said on everyone but scholars don't say it
[42:12]because he prays it every day and i said no i well
[42:18]mostly i pray on like thursday nights and during ramadan every day
[42:21]and he said no you know once you get used to you
[42:26]doing again every day it becomes that no no islamically from a
[42:30]legal fitki perspective it's not wajib it's highly highly highly recommended but
[42:34]not wahjit now even if you've been praying it 10 years it
[42:38]doesn't mean now it's wajib on you so no that's not true
[42:42]so the prophet salallahu for him to spend a portion of the
[42:49]night in ibadah and specifically pray the night prayer and the prophet
[42:54]would say to the point where i got the impression from jibra
[43:12]il constantly telling me about salat i got the impression that the
[43:15]good people of my ummah don't sleep what does that mean that
[43:20]means the prophet says when i heard jubilee talking about sarah so
[43:26]much i got the impression that if you're a good follower of
[43:30]my ummah you have to pray salat not that it's wajib but
[43:38]it's a feature of the true believers he states there is no
[43:45]deed that you do accept that it has a specific reward you
[43:50]could put a value of it accept salatella the only exception is
[43:58]allah does not tell us what he's given us for salat and
[44:06]here's the evidence allah talks about the believers the beds of the
[44:19]believers look at this description their bets pull them have you seen
[44:24]especially in the winter it's kind of cold you can't get out
[44:27]of bed it's like there's this magnetic force pulling you towards your
[44:32]bed the believers know they struggle and they get up from their
[44:36]bed kaufman out of fear and out of desire to worship no
[44:49]soul knows what allah has prepared for them see allah does not
[44:53]give us the reward of even even the prophet sallallahu alaihi when
[44:59]he prayed salah to lay allah did not say exactly what he'll
[45:08]give him allah said i'll give you um i'll give you the
[45:23]praised position allah does not specify what it is we know that
[45:33]this status that allah will give the prophet is something everyone in
[45:40]history from angels to humans will praise the basically they will be
[45:45]bewildered at that amazing position we don't know exactly what the prophet
[45:48]will give allah will give the prophet but he says is the
[45:55]power of shafa because the greatest honor that allah will give prophet
[45:59]muhammad sallallahu alaihi on the day of judgment is shafa he can
[46:04]intercede on behalf of whomever he wants look how much trust and
[46:09]authority allah has given him isn't that big on behalf of god
[46:14]on the day of judgment you forgive people you do shafa'a for
[46:19]people that's the biggest position seriously show me an can you conceptualize
[46:23]an honor greater than that allah is the king of that day
[46:28]maliki omideen the owner and the king of that day he rules
[46:32]everything he's assigned a human being he says you're in charge today
[46:36]it's your shafa i hear that flies and counts is there an
[46:40]honor greater than that subhanallah imagine just people looking at rasulullah everyone
[46:46]on the day of judgement even prophets they will look at the
[46:52]prophet ya rasulullah do shafa'a for us and if you remember in
[46:54]our islamic beliefs course about shafa'a we mentioned a fundamental point in
[46:59]which he says every human on the day of judgment even the
[47:07]prophets even us the imams we need the shafa'a of the prophet
[47:11]even the sinless ones why why if you're sinless you still need
[47:18]shafa you don't have sin so he's not interceding for the sins
[47:22]to be forgiven because you're sinless but you still need his shafa
[47:26]to go higher okay that's one way exactly heaven is infinite what
[47:35]did you do to deserve infinity even if you're prophet nu and
[47:40]you spent 2 000 years guiding people but it's 2 000 years
[47:44]it's limited in return allah is giving you an infinite reward what
[47:49]did you do to deserve that infinite reward not you didn't do
[47:52]anything to deserve infinite reward the most thing allah will tell prophet
[47:55]okay two thousand years you suffered ya allah i'll give you two
[47:59]thousand years in heaven and then it's over why should it continue
[48:05]for eternity you need shafa you need an advocate to get you
[48:09]in heaven for eternity that's the shafa'a of the prophet salallahu now
[48:13]remember when we had that class someone told me ask me this
[48:19]question what about the prophet himself who's putting him in infinity war
[48:21]i don't know the answer to that one that's a good question
[48:28]that's allah allah he's the best creation of allah allah intercedes on
[48:34]his behalf and that's why the prophet would say oh allah if
[48:37]i go to heaven it's not because i earned it even the
[48:40]prophet would say that but it's because of your mercy and father
[48:44]because of your favor that i go to heaven otherwise i don't
[48:49]even deserve heaven see if the world ended and there was no
[48:51]heaven we still couldn't complain allah created me he gave me blessings
[48:58]the oxygen that i breathed the water that i drank allah gave
[49:02]me blessings he allowed me to experience what life is and that's
[49:06]it allah is not obligated to give me anything more than that
[49:10]he's not obligated but allah out of mercy he does yes jesus
[49:18]and all those prophets before prophet muhammed will they be with him
[49:23]like on the gates of heaven yes they will walk behind him
[49:27]he will intercede for them everyone from adam until all the last
[49:32]prophets they will walk behind him after him and his ummah they
[49:36]will walk behind him and go to heaven yes so he leads
[49:40]the way remember we talked about in islamic beliefs is the biggest
[49:46]banner on the day of judgment it's bigger than the whole planet
[49:51]it's a huge banner under the arch of allah that is the
[49:56]banner of the prophet muhammad he gives it to imam ali he
[49:59]tells imam ali lead the way and then interestingly by the way
[50:06]imam ali understands that he enters first into heaven because he's carrying
[50:12]the banner he tells me rasool allah you know i enter before
[50:18]you you're the messenger of allah i enter before you the prophet
[50:21]basically tells him when there is a commander of an army and
[50:25]there's a carrier of the banner when they go somewhere the carrier
[50:30]of the banner enters first then the commander goes basically let me
[50:35]yes you're carrying my banner so you go first and we're walking
[50:39]in this group doesn't mean that that's imam ali is better than
[50:43]the prophet no but he's carrying the banner of the prophet so
[50:46]he has to enter so any everyone can see the banner and
[50:52]enter subhanallah yeah that's why i'm clarifying this does not mean imam
[50:56]ali is better no the prophet is much higher it's the prophet's
[51:00]banner but technically technically he enters first [Laughter] yes we have hadith
[51:07]by the way and and you know we're not embarrassed to say
[51:09]this we have hadiths that's imam lady fatima the prophet asks them
[51:15]enter before me he sees them enter then he enters to show
[51:20]those who oppress them on the day of judgment what status they
[51:25]have well the prophet so we find that the prophet sallallahu alaihi
[51:32]really took pride in being a slave of allah and remember the
[51:43]prophet brought the system of ibadah in a corrupt society that was
[51:48]based on idolatry people worshiping idols people had no sense of khushu
[51:53]it was just a folklore that they did bowing to the idols
[51:57]and then maybe mentioning the name of god the prophets the prophet
[52:03]transformed the meaning of ibadah the meaning of worship what it means
[52:07]to worship allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and so we're really indebted to
[52:11]the prophet sallallahu alaihi for being the perfect human being who did
[52:16]subjugate to the almighty god and and that is a source of
[52:21]greatness for the prophet when you think of rasulullah remember his side
[52:24]i think too often we forget that yes in the prophets before
[52:29]how come god they may have had wajib obligations on them sure
[52:40]possibly that something specifically allah required them to do that's very possible
[52:46]but when prophet muhammed came that's when stalin started right no no
[52:51]salah existed but in just slightly different form remember the jews before
[52:57]islam they would pray three times a day dawn afternoon and sunset
[53:02]they would pray even until today the religious committed jews they pray
[53:06]during these times no salah did exist but the full salah that
[53:11]we have you know the way we have the ruku the way
[53:13]we recite the quran and the kill this is unique to islam
[53:16]but salah in other more basic forms existed definitely islam came and
[53:22]broadened the salah and and added many dimensions to it such that
[53:26]the hadith one hadith 4 000 limits and conditions if you want
[53:33]to observe the wajob and the mustahab it's 4 000 details of
[53:38]salah that's how the prophet prayed yeah this did not exist before
[53:43]islam this is something unique that allah gave to this ummah but
[53:47]salah had a basic form all prophets prophet says allah told me
[53:54]to pray prophet isa was an excessive prayer prayer the person who
[54:01]prays muslim he was an ex he engaged in excessive ibadah in
[54:05]fact most of the time he was praying and that's why al
[54:09]islam in that debate with the jathalir the leader of the christians
[54:15]he made this point in that debate the jathali came you know
[54:20]the moon wanted this debate to happen benil abbas wanted to be
[54:25]embarrassed by bringing all these top scholars they're like well if he's
[54:29]surrounded with scholars he'll eventually give in so in the midst of
[54:33]the debate with the leader of the christians his name was the
[54:37]jatali his title you know like an archbishop or whatever and imam
[54:41]islam told him we love everything about jesus except one thing we
[54:48]have one criticism of jesus he couldn't believe what imam was saying
[54:54]you know he was like sitting calm you know he suddenly started
[54:59]to stiffen his back what you muslims have a criticism of jesus
[55:02]what is it he told him yeah everything was good about him
[55:09]he was very low in worship very little in worship he'd barely
[55:15]worship he got upset then he laughed he said i really had
[55:22]respect for you i thought you were really a scholar that i'm
[55:26]debating i had heard about now you know he basically told the
[55:31]imam you're ignorant the mom says why am i ignorant he says
[55:34]no man in history at that time prayed and did ibaadah more
[55:40]than jesus imam says are you sure about that he said yes
[55:43]the imam asked him who was he praying to the hadith says
[55:53]that just got shattered he did not expect that coming he lowered
[55:56]his head to the ground he did not raise it until the
[56:00]debate was over you don't know what to say because he had
[56:02]come trying to prove jesus is god imam what 30 seconds he
[56:08]just disrupted his whole process of thinking [Laughter] subhanallah only the amounts
[56:15]of admit can pull that off subhanallah so yes all the prophets
[56:21]of allah they engaged in excessive you know ibaad prophet adam alaihi
[56:26]salam 200 years he wept in ibadah any bad effect from approaching
[56:33]that tree i've removed it i've forgiven you all the prophets of
[56:37]allah prophet he'd cry so much in ibadah such that the hadith
[56:44]says you know the tears are salty right and that affects the
[56:50]skin he would cry so constantly and incessantly such that there were
[56:56]valleys as the hadith says symbolically on his cheek that means the
[57:03]the dumu the tears had made an engravement on his cheek can
[57:09]you imagine that's prophet to the point to the point where his
[57:13]mother or the people the companions of zakaria his father sometimes he
[57:18]would give a speech he's sitting in a circle he's giving a
[57:22]speech and he's talking about the day of judgment and heaven and
[57:25]hell they would come and they would beg him they told they
[57:29]tell him your son is around here please don't give the sermon
[57:34]because if you say the sermon your son is not going to
[57:36]stop until he falls unconscious this was when he was a young
[57:41]boy when he would hear the mo he'd cry cry cry cry
[57:46]cry until he would lose it that's how the see allah chose
[57:51]them for a reason they were at the peak peak of ibadah
[57:55]and so one amazing legacy of prophet muhammad that we honor and
[58:02]we cherish and we learn from is his commitment to the ibadah
[58:04]and there is so much more to discuss but inshaallah we you
[58:09]know will leave it at that in terms of our subsequent classes
[58:17]will explore other dimensions of his personality tahrir
