What does God look like?

“Have you seen God?” Who likes to see God, sense Him, and live with Him? Where is God so that I can see Him, find Him, smell Him, and fall in love with Him? No one says to believe in a God Who can’t be seen. No one says to fall in love with a God Who can’t be seen. Is it possible to fall in love with such a God? What should I love? Whoever wants to see God, he can only see Him in one situation. Look at God as the examiner in your life.
There is no need for you to see an object or imagine Him in your imagination. Just pay attention to this fact that God is testing you. As soon as a problem occurs, ask God, “God, is it a test?” Talk to Him! He is talking to you through the language of testing. I swear to God you’ll understand His behaviour. You’ll understand His smiling and frowning. You will understand His pouting and reconciliation. You’ll understand from which of your actions He has become happy. You’ll understand why He loves you. You’ll understand how much He loves you. Then, when you start praying, you’ll understand to Whom you are talking! There is Someone in front of you!
God says, “You don’t need to see Me. I work with you. Understand that whatever happens to you from morning until night is Me talking to you in the language of incidents.” As soon as someone is kind to you, say, “God, You wanted someone to be kind to me?”
If you look, you’ll understand the reason. In the beginning you won’t. You’ll say, “God, You wanted someone to be kind to me? Why? I don’t understand. But You tested me!” When someone frowns at you, say, “God, You wanted someone to frown at me? Had I become rude? Was I arrogant?” He’ll easily talk to you. He’ll talk to you even better than your friends do. He’ll become your companion. You’ll start loving Him.
Actually, I didn’t ask you a question. And, you didn’t say anything about it. I don’t know how I’m talking, or I should say who I’m talking to. My friends, answer a question. Do you believe that each incident, which happens around us from morning until night, is accidental? Yes? Please, everyone answer. Does everyone say no? Is it accidental? Were they all designed by God? “Yes!” All of them? Do you believe that? Why were they designed? To have fun? For us to circle around ourselves? Are all of them tests, or not? “Yes!” What good answers you give!
Now, another question. Do we look at all of the incidents, which happen from morning until night, as tests? Good! May I be sacrificed for you. You’re seeing it yourself. Then he says, “Sir, what should I do to pay attention to God in praying?” “My dear, you can’t pay attention to God.”
He says, “I’m constantly distracted.” Have you ever seen God? Have you lived with Him for even two days? They have even stated the number in the traditions. If you live like this for forty days, everything around you will talk to you. The ground and the sky will talk to you!
Living with God means that you understand the language of God’s tests. Look what He wants from you at each moment. Look! What does He want from you now? He brings up an incident. Suddenly your wife gets upset and grumbles. Look at God and ask, “Is my capacity supposed to be tested?” Your friend invites you to sin. Look at God, “God, is it a test? I can’t tolerate it.” Cry right then. Say, “God, I swear to Husayn (‘a) I can’t tolerate it. Don’t send these friends. Send other friends. Send friends who take me to Medina and Karbala.” Say this a few times. The next week one of your friends will come and tell you, “I’m going to Karbala. Will you come with me?” Look at God and say, “God, how quickly You hear me!”
Have you ever seen God? Have you lived with Him for two days? They have even stated the number in the traditions. If you live like this for forty days, everything around you will talk to you. The ground and the sky will talk to you!

The Missing Link in People’s Lives

I chose my goal. What should I focus on? I want to move forward. I don’t want any of my good deeds to be fruitless. I want the minimum good deeds from me to take me to my goal; plus, they write good deeds for me that I haven’t done!
I want to tell you a secret for you not to have any ineffective actions or fruitless knowledge, for our belief to give results, and for our love to be appropriate. I want to move forward. I don’t want any of my good deeds to be fruitless.
There is a link between knowledge, belief, and love with action. Paying attention to this link causes knowledge, belief, love, and action to be fruitful. Even if you don’t do any actions, when this link is present itself, you will receive the results of your deeds! Even without actions! This link does something else too. It will increase knowledge, belief, and love by itself. This link prepares you to be ready for action and makes your deeds beneficial and fruitful. The missing link in our life!
The outcast, cursed, and wretched Satan, who is our enemy, continuously makes us miserable because of this link. How? Through negligence. You should start practicing from now. This is the most pronounced spiritual skill that everyone should have. When I tell you the answer to this question, don’t say that was easy. Yes, it is easy. Human beings are always becoming wretched due to neglecting easy things. Did you think people go to Hell because it was hard? So why is the Day of Resurrection called “the Day of Regret?” Because people regret.
Everyone who is sitting here, who are very good people and I am the most wretched of all, will regret in the Hereafter. We will regret why we didn’t become like Ayatollah Bahjat. Why? Because we will realize that it was easy.
Now, I want to teach you this simple method. This missing link is intention. The intention of getting close to God. The intention that, “I will do this to get close to You God. I’m doing this deed for that.” This is intention. Don’t do good deeds without an intention. It’s useless. You will be like Cane who killed Abel! You will become so bad with your good deeds, that you will be ready to kill Abel! Make an intention for each one of your actions. Learn to say, “O God, because of You.” Your problem is not your sins. Your problem is when you do good deed without saying, “O God, because of You.”
(God says,) “I want intention from you.” “So You don’t want action?” “I want action coming from pure intention.” “What if I wasn’t able to do it, but I had the intention?” “I will accept it from you. I want intention from you.” Friends, is it hard to make the intention? Do you want to say in the Hereafter, “I couldn’t make the intention?” When you pass by a house that hasn’t been finished after a few years, you can say, “O God, I wish I had the money and finished their house for them.”
Is this hard to do? You don’t have this much conscience?! What does God want from us? I swear to God! What does God want from us?! A tradition says, “If a person has the intention to pray the midnight prayer, light will pour on him till morning! Even if he sleeps.” Is it hard to make an intention? This part of existence has been ignored. It is not there at all! Why don’t you make an intention?
A man was building his house. Imam Sadiq (a) asked him, “What are you doing?” He said, “I’m putting a window for the kitchen smoke to go out.” The Imam (a) said, “Say, ‘I am putting a window to see the sky and know when it is time to pray.’” Make the intention for God; the smoke will go out from the window too. You are putting it anyway.
I swear to God we are wretched that we don’t use these opportunities. This is our problem. A tradition says, “People will be resurrected based on their intentions.” (It will be said,) “People with this intention come to this side. Those whose intention was to help Imam Husayn (a) come here.” Some people will be chosen, and you will say, “This Person! Why him?! Why not me?!” Because you didn’t make this intention, “O Husayn, (a) if I were in Karbala…!”
Someone said, “O Commander of the Faithful, I wish my brother had been here with you.” The Imam (a) asked, “Was this your brother’s desire?” He said, “Oh, he loved to be here!” The Imam (a) said, “He was here. Not only him, but also everyone till the Day of Judgement who hears the story of my loneliness and says, ‘I wish I had been there to help him.’ I saw all of them in my army! They were here.”
What is the problem with our intentions? We aren’t used to using the opportunity to make good intentions. A tradition says, “Make yourself used to making good intentions.” My friend, you have to get used to making a good intention. Start making intentions one by one so that you get used to it. Know how to do it. It has to be learned.

عن الإمام الصادق(ع): «وَفَدَ إِلَى الحُسَينِ(ع) وَفدٌ فَقَالوا: يَا ابنَ رَسولِ اللهِ»... يا أبا عبد الله، «إِنَّ أَصحابَنا وَفَدوا إِلَى مُعاوِيَة وَوَفَدنا نَحنُ إِلَيك، فَقال(ع): إِذَنْ أُجيزَكُم بِأَكثَرَ مِمَّا يُجيزُهُم‏»؛ أي: بما أنكم أتيتم إليّ سأمنحكم من العطاء أكثر مما يمنحهم معاوية.
«فَقالوا: جُعِلنَا فِداكَ»... ما أتينا لنأخذ منك عطاءً بل «إِنَّمَا جِئْنَا مُرْتَادِينَ لِدِينِنَا» وقُربةً إلى الله. فما إن قالوا ذلك.. «فَطَأْطَأَ(ع) رَأْسَهُ وَنَكَتَ في الأَرض‏»؛ أي خفضَ رأسَه وأخذ يخُطّ في التراب بإصبعه.. غاصَ في أفكاره.. ماذا عساني أقول؟! أتدرون ما الذي قلتم لي؟ «وَأَطرَقَ طَويلًا»، ظل مدة غارقًا في أفكاره... «ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأسَه فَقَالَ: قَصيرَةٌ مِن طَويلَة»، أُخبركم بقليل من كلام كثير؛ أي كان عند الإمام الحسين(ع) كلام كثير يقوله إزاء ما قالوا.. لكن قال: سأخبركم بقليل من كثير، بقطرة من بحر. فديتك بنفسي يا حسين(ع) على أسلوبك في الكلام.
ثم يبوح لهم بسر.. فسيروا واسلُكوا بهذا السر نحو الحسين(ع). قال: «مَن أَحَبَّنا لَم يُحِبَّنا لِقَرابَةٍ بَينَنا وَبَينَهُ وَلا لِمَعروفٍ أَسدَيناهُ إِلَيهِ إِنَّما أَحَبَّنا لِلهِ وَرَسولِه»؛ مَن أحبّنا ليس لعطاءٍ ينالُه منا من منافع الدنيا ولا لكونه من أقاربنا، بل أحبّنا مُخلصًا. أَحبَّ الحسين(ع) مرضاةً لله ورسوله، «جاءَ مَعَنا يَومَ القِيامَة كَهَاتَيْنِ» هكذا.. هكذا.. «وَقَرَنَ بَينَ سَبَّابَتَيه»، هكذا يأتي معنا...

What’s the result?

There is a very important question for human beings! It is very stimulating! A person needs an answer to this question. What’s next? What’s the result? This question takes a person to the highest goal, “What’s the result?” I am a person who wants benefits. But, I have a question. I am a person who wants enjoyment. But, I have a question. This question should be answered. What’s the result?
A person needs the highest goal for his life, which will then prioritize all his lower goals. “Why do you buy a house?” “Because, we need a house.” “Why do you marry?” “Because, we have another need too.” “Why do you work?” “We need money too. Besides money, we need social recognition too.” “What’s the relation between social recognition and marriage?” “No relation. They may help each other in some cases.” “You’re brushing your hair?” He replies, “Hair improves my appearance, and I love beauty.” “What’s the relation between beauty and teeth?” “Nothing. This is another goal.” Such a person is the most wretched person in the world. Why? He’s a scattered person, a person who has several goals. Such a person is not in love. Even if such a person has thousands of such goals, and each is more or less important, his being is scattered. He is trying to reach several goals.
If a person has a higher goal, this goal will give direction to all his smaller goals, and all his short and long-term goals. You should find such a goal that will first of all satisfy your search for infinity to the extent that you don’t say anything else afterwards. You say, “Aha! This is the result?! Right!” You should find such a goal that will first of all satisfy your search for infinity to the extent that you don’t say anything else afterwards.
Psychologists say a human being needs such a goal. They say that the only answer that people have found for this goal is God. The psychologists have understood this too. God Himself is the only answer to this question, and no one can deceive himself. No one. As soon as you ask, “What’s the result?” God comes up like the sun, which gradually rises from behind the horizon at dawn. You will see God. He will show Himself to you. You will gain an interest in Him and gradually become fond of Him. Afterwards, a person finds calmness, and then he marries with calmness. Or, he does other things. He manages the world. He studies: math, engineering… But, he’s busy with God. Now, he knows why he is living!
Do you know what this means for our goal to be God? After we meet God on the Day of Judgement, will it be done? No, you will become thirsty to see God again. When you see Him again, it is as if you hadn’t seen God before that. Then, you become thirsty to see Him again, and again. When you see Him the next time, you say, “I didn’t know God until now!” How long will this continue? It will continue forever. And, only God can be like this. Each time he meets God, he doesn’t know how to describe it. During this period, the angels massage him too. They provide his house too. “Come here. Stay here.” But, everything is Him. Heaven is a hotel for those who meet God!

Only God is limitless. What does limitless mean? It means that each time you see Him, a part of Him is manifested to you, and God does not finish. God is the only existence Who never finishes. You’ll have the benefit of meeting Him forever. A human being is a creature with this innate desire. The divine prophets remove the dust from a human being’s innate desire so that he or she can ask one question, “What’s the result?!” A person wants to choose that superior goal so that he will find calmness and not say, “What’s the result?” afterwards. What will happen after choosing that superior goal? Afterwards, a person finds calmness, and then he marries with calmness. He manages the world. Now, he knows why he is living!
