My friends, pilgrims to the Imam’s (as) shrine, this is not in our hands! Imam Reza (as) likes us to visit him and be around him. Imam Reza (as) misses us. Imam Reza’s (as) fondness for his Shi’a is much more than their fondness for him. Why do we make a pilgrimage? When you make a pilgrimage do not say that you have come because of this or that. Stand and say, “Imam, what did you want to tell me that you called me? Are you pleased? Are you happy that I’ve come?”
I once had an accident on the road. It was the time of Eid al-Ghadir. They were taking me to a city in a car and it flipped over. It wasn’t that dangerous but the car turned over a couple of times. My hand and nose broke and I was hospitalized in Tehran for a while. I could tell you the name of the hospital, but the head of that hospital may not be satisfied. He treated me. It was the New Year when he sent me home. He said, “If you come back, I won’t be here. It’s the New Year and I have to go to Mashhad.”
It was interesting for me that a doctor wants to always be in Mashhad for the New Year. I asked, “What do you do with your other patients? I’m gradually getting better, [but the others?].” He said, “I will talk to them. I have to go to Mashhad for the New Year.” While he was changing the bandage on my hand he said, “There’s a story behind this. I’ll tell you. When you’re finished, come to my office and I’ll tell you.”
He said, “When I was young I had a problem when I was abroad. From far I told Imam Reza (as), “Imam Reza (as) help me and solve my problem. Then I will come to Mashhad every year on New Years. I set the number of years too.” I don’t remember the years now. When I narrated this story before, I remembered the number of years too.
For example, he said, “’I will come to your shrine for 15 years.’ Imam Reza (as) helped me with what I wanted. Each New Year I went to Mashhad. I told the Imam that I would travel by land in order to tolerate some hardship on the way. I would come from abroad to Tehran in order to go to Imam Reza’s shrine. Since I had made a vow and the Imam had helped me, I had to go. These 15 years finished. I was busy treating patients and had become a surgeon. I was very busy.
One New Year I told myself, ‘I finished those 15 years last year and I am busy now too. So I might not go to Mashhad this year. I’ll go another time.’ A few nights later after I had decided to not go that New Year, I saw Imam Reza (as) in a dream. I was surprised that the Imam was standing next to the dome of his shrine and looking at me from far. I was happy in my dream that I was seeing Imam Reza (as) from far. Imam Reza (as) told me, ‘You don’t want to come this year? Come!’ I woke up. I felt so ashamed. I said, ‘O Imam Reza, you have gotten used to me coming! I should come to Mashhad each year for you to tolerate seeing me. You are interested in me coming each year.’ So I told my family, ‘Get up! Whoever wants to come with me, I’m going to Mashhad in a few days.’ They said, ‘Why? You said you are very busy this year.’ I didn’t say anything.”
This is how it is. Imam Reza (as) likes us to come. Some people have a newborn. They say, “Let’s take our baby to Imam Reza’s (as) shrine.” They think they themselves like this. However it is the Imam who likes them to come, [as if he says,] “Bring your child for me to see him/her.” He becomes happy. I’m telling you adults. You are always like a mother’s children to the Imam. When these children grow up, it’s their mother who calls them and says, “Won’t you come so I can see you? I miss you.”
The child is busy now and has grown up. He is busy with his own world. His father calls him. He says, “Won’t you come so I can see you? I miss you.” When you go to the shrine, you should know that you are making the Imam happy! Imam Reza (as) is alive [according to the traditions]. We shouldn’t say he is dead and gone. The Imam becomes happy. Why does he become happy? Why should he like me? It is because no matter how bad we are, we are still like his children. No matter how bad we are, the Imam is like our father.

1- Feel the resemblance between the “Night of Destiny” and the “Resurrection Day.”
2- Be optimistic and pray for forgiveness, our wishes, and particularly for getting close to Him.
3- Be restless to achieve closeness to God.
4- The faithful should resemble the sinful in showing empty hands to God. The sinful must pray like the faithful with hearts filled with certainty as to God’s Kindness and Generosity.
5- Attract God's Compassion by being kind to others (by forgiving and praying for them).

6- Be generous by praying for others.
7- Help those in need, and be kind to relatives.
8- Show kindness to our parents, pray for our spiritual leaders.
9- Ask for a good livelihood and the destruction of those who bring about poverty.
10- Join the prayer gatherings with other people, at least for a part of the night.

11- Recite supplications, which are appropriate with our mood.
12- Read some of the Qur'an.
13- Reflect and evaluate ourselves.
14- Think about the moment when we leave this life and review our will.
15- Don’t neglect remembering and thinking about Imam Ali (‘a).

16- Continually feel the presence of the living Imam, al-Mahdi (‘aj).
17- Plan for our future and changes to be made in our behaviour.
18- The third “Night of Destiny” is the night to pray for the coming of Imam Mahdi (‘aj).
19- Pray for a good destiny and martyrdom in the way of God (if one wants).
20- Make a pilgrimage to Imam Husayn’s (‘a) shrine, or send your greetings to him from far. Pray for the martyrs.

I ask for your prayers,
Alireza Panahian

You plan, I determine.
Why should I even try?

The Holy Prophet of Islam said, “If the angel Gabriel, the angel Michael, the angel Israfil and I all pray for a blessed marriage for you, it won’t happen unless God wants it to happen.” One might say, “Sir, if you say this, we should just forget it and go. We shouldn’t work either; everything is in God’s hands. Or, a part is in God’s hands. We can’t have any effect. So leave us to believe in determinism. Whatever happens is not related to us. Let us roll down from a cliff like a rock.”
If we weren’t supposed to plan or pay attention to the result, but just pass divine tests and trust in God, it would have been very easy. The beauty of it is that God tells you to plan. He makes your deeds effective too. Then he ruins your mood and removes that effect. “I have known God through the dissolution of intentions,” Imam Ali (‘a) said. God shows He’s God when He ruins a person’s plans.
“Can we have an effect on our destiny?” Yes, for example, you can pray. But, if that determining factor allows, your prayer will be answered. If that determining factor doesn’t allow, your prayer won’t be answered, even if you’re a good person. “So our prayer can have an effect?” Yes, you can change your fixed destiny with your prayer! But, if the test allows it. All of your moments and your destiny - from any angle you look at it - are under the influence of testing, the determining factor.
Tests are the most determining factor in life. For example, “God, he prayed and You said his prayer will be answered. Because, his prayers are always answered, or he pleaded a lot or another reason. Or, his parents prayed for him to have a good spouse. You said the testing system won’t allow it, and he should be tested with a bad spouse. But God, he himself is very clever! He won’t easily accept that! He is very careful.” God says, “My tests determine this. I want to test him now. I won’t let his/her wisdom work right when choosing a spouse. When will I open his/her wisdom? After the honeymoon!” This is an example. “But… I!” “What?! Pass the test.”
When God ruins a person’s planning, He is showing Himself. Don’t be like a spoiled child and say, “God, since You interfere, I’ll drop it. I won’t work anymore.” His mother has raised him badly. He’s very selfish. He’s like Pharaoh! But, he is not a ruler. Fine, he’s a small Pharaoh. If he were a ruler, he would have acted worse than Pharaoh. He gets offended that God ruins his affairs! So he becomes disappointed and doesn’t plan, try or work! He says, “Since a corner of it is in God’s hands and He often ruins my affairs, I won’t try anymore.”
You’re so wrong not to try! You have been ordered to try! You have been ordered to plan! You have been ordered to get up, try and sometimes fail so that I see how you react! If a person doesn’t try, plan and fail, failure and victory will be meaningless. Do you want to mess up God’s tests? God ruins your plans. “I have known God through the dissolution of intentions,” Imam Ali (‘a) said. He ruins them with His decisions. God doesn’t let you get your wishes. He takes His tests. Sometimes you get your wishes, and that is another test. He let’s you get your wishes when the testing system lets you. Does this mean we shouldn’t do our duty or our work? You have been ordered to act and to plan! You have been ordered to get up, try, and sometimes fail!

May this never happen to you that they tell you that you can’t participate in mourning ceremonies for Husayn (as) anymore. Wouldn’t this be terrible? It is not even imaginable that they stop us from participating in such meetings. But tonight, Zaynab was told that she should give up her Husayn since this is Karbala. You’re not willing to abandon Husayn’s (as) mourning ceremony. But from tonight, Zaynab (as) had to prepare herself to lose Husayn (as). Alas for Zaynab’s heart from tonight.
What was the philosophy behind Imam Husayn’s (as) head being carried along with Zaynab from Karbala to Kufa and Damascus? Maybe it was for Zaynab to be able to slowly detach herself from Husayn (as). Alas for Zaynab’s heart from tonight. [When they reached Karbala,] the Imam (as) asked, “What’s the name of this land?” They replied, “Karbala.” He said, “I seek refuge in God from sorrow (Karb) and tragedy (bala).”
Whenever he talked about Karbala, he would look at Zaynab (as). [It was as if he was saying,] “My Zaynab, this is Karbala. I’m addressing you. We’re going to be separated from each other here. Be ready.” Zaynab (as) would ignore these words and look in a different direction. Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as) would glance at Zaynab (as), “Did my Zaynab believe this is Karbala? If she had believed it, she would have started wailing. No, she doesn’t believe it. She doesn’t want to accept it.” He would look at his Zaynab caringly.
I talked about this story in the last meeting, and I’m talking about it again now. And I’ll always talk about it. Because it took nine days for Husayn (as) to tell Zaynab (as), “This is Karbala. Believe this.” She ignored this until the evening of Tasu’a when Husayn (as) said, “O world! Woe to you.” When Zaynab (as) heard this, she threw herself in front of Husayn (as), screamed and fainted. “My Husayn, don’t talk about leaving.” “My Zaynab, I have tried to tell you many times that this is Karbala! Why didn’t you want to believe this?” “I can’t tolerate this. Don’t talk about leaving!” This means, “I was trying to ignore the fact that we have been in Karbala during these nine days. No matter how much you said this is Karbala, I tried to keep myself busy and didn’t want to accept it.”
Imam Husayn (as) said, “My Zaynab! My ancestor (the Prophet), father, brother and mother were all better than I am. They all passed away and you were patient.” She replied, “I was able to be patient because you were there. How can I be separated from you?”
May God’s curse be upon the oppressors.

Be detached.

The martyr Mutahhari and others described “Zuhd (asceticism)” and said that it doesn’t mean not to have anything. It means to be detached. Being detached means being independent. Our entire journey (towards God) is towards being detached. Be detached!
If you pay attention, you will see this in the divine tests every day. God is constantly testing us to take us to a state of independence. What was important for you up to now? The divine tests put pressure on our sensitive points so that we will become detached. “Ok, leave me alone!” Suddenly you see that tomorrow the divine tests are putting pressure on a different sensitive point. “Just leave me alone!” The pressure will continue until you become detached. As soon as you become independent, the pressure goes somewhere else. It won’t let you go.
God, from whatever thing You make us detached, do it slowly. What should I pray? What is your opinion? Shall I say, “God don’t make us detached?” He won’t listen. But, becoming detached is very hard! The hardest time is when He wants to cut all our ties when @we are dying. At that time, you struggle to do something. He says, “I told you before to cut these ties one by one.” “God, You mean You don’t want to give anything in this world?” God replies, “Actually, I’ll give you everything. You become detached.” The issue is for you to be independent and not about you having things.
Have things, but be independent from them. “God, we are dependent on some things. Don’t make us detached from them.” Will He listen? “God, You mean You don’t want to give anything in this world?!” God replies, “Actually, I’ll give you everything. You become detached.” The issue is not about having things. Have them, but be detached. Be detached!

About our goals in life, whether it is choosing a job, a lifestyle, or a field to study, what should our goals be?
If we choose our goal correctly, it will give us energy, enjoyment, excitement, strength and increase our speed. These are the spiritual effects. Its effects on our thinking are the same. It helps a person to focus, be attentive, and brings understanding. It sharpens a person’s mind to be able to find the way, and he will find it. The worst way to choose a goal – and most goals are chosen like this - is for people to just think that they don’t want to be miserable! This is the most passive goal one can choose! This is a disaster.
Mothers use this way of talking in many cases. “Study so that you won’t be miserable.” They ruin the child. Sometimes fathers say, “Study so that you won’t be miserable and poor.” This is a passive way of choosing a goal. In fact, this is not choosing a goal. This is escaping. This is not a goal. It is escaping from a series of bad goals. Sometimes choosing big goals is not being unrealistic or unwise. Actually, it’s a very wise thing to do.
For example, a nation that only wants to save itself is wretched. Your goal should be to help for the issue of Hijab in France. If this is your goal [and not just for your own nation], you’ll be successful here too. As long as we are just thinking about making a car for our own country, we will definitely not become a [good] carmaker. But if we wish to make a car that can compete with international carmakers, that is when we may be able to make a motorcycle or a bike!
Honorable filmmakers, do not make films or TV serials for just Iranians anymore. I plead you. If you want to do something for religion, the Revolution and humanity, only make movies for international audiences. Make a film in their language that they can understand. We’ll watch it too. If you tell a student, “Read and learn these things well so that you can act upon them,” you have made him wretched. You should say, “Read and learn these things well since you have to change all of them. Be creative!” From the beginning, say for being creative. Not imitation, not obedience, not repetition. Down with repetition! Down with stopping!
This is a very bad custom to only talk against evils. We should also call out against being satisfied with a little goodness too. You chose a small goal. Now you’ve chosen a bigger goal. That’s better. Are you willing to help prepare for the reappearance of the Savior? Get up!

We are not alone. There is God. God loves us. This feeling that you are alone is a false feeling. The same feeling that Hazrat Adam (‘a) had too. Satan said, “Think of yourself.”
We human beings are creatures who must gain value ourselves. We are not like angels whose value is fixed, and they can’t increase their value. Since we are creatures who must gain value ourselves, naturally God has to give freedom to us. He has given it.
He has to give us a few kinds of interests: liking goodness, badness, uncleanness, small things, etc. God has given us a few kinds of interests. If He gave us only one interest, we would always choose that. Then our freedom would have been meaningless.
If He left us free, but gave us one kind of interest, one kind of ability, and one kind of need, it is obvious that we would go in that direction. So, there must be various interests in our being.
When there are various interests and we are free, God must put us in a situation to be tested. What does this mean? He puts us in a dilemma so that we can choose. We are put in a dilemma, where each way seems to be in our favour. We must have a choice for us to be in a dilemma. Also, we must have different interests so that we can gain value, use this freedom, and make a good choice.
When a human being is in this situation, God must be hidden a little. The topic “believing in the unseen” arises. If the Houris from Heaven stand just a few steps away and start signalling us, it’s obvious what we’re going to choose. So, He has to hide some things a little. God has to be silent a little for human beings to gain value. He doesn’t respond very quickly to me so that my choice has value. He doesn’t reward me quickly for my good deeds.
Suddenly, I become alone! And, the cursed Satan abuses my loneliness. Satan caused our father Adam to make a mistake in Heaven, and God didn’t intervene. God had told Adam, “Don’t touch this tree. This is the forbidden tree. Use all the other trees.” Satan used Adam’s loneliness.
When Adam was alone, Satan said, “Shall I direct you to the Tree of Eternity and a kingdom which never decays?” (Qur’an, 20:120) Do you want me to do this? For a moment, Adam forgot God and His Kindness. He thought he is alone and has to take care of himself.
“Adam disobeyed his Lord.” He made a mistake. When God left him alone a little, Adam started thinking. He started thinking about his own future and his own interests. Hazrat Adam (‘a) became negligent. Why did Adam make a mistake? He worried about tomorrow. Who becomes worried about tomorrow? A person who doesn’t feel that a Kind power is supporting him. What happens to a person who worries about his future? He becomes bad. His behavior becomes bad. His heart becomes hard.
Why don’t we believe in God’s Kindness, gradually forget it, and become suspicious? Because, the environment of human beings’ lives, due to the tests, is such a way that we feel lonely. We feel lonely when we see that God isn’t near and accessible to us, and He doesn’t answer us quickly. From this feeling of loneliness, we get to the point that we feel no one loves us. No one is watching over us.
We leave that beautiful serenity of our childhood. I have told the example from Ayatollah Bahjat about this several times. He said that a child is never worried about tomorrow’s lunch. He says, “Mom will fix it.” “What if your mom doesn’t give you food?!” He’ll look at you strangely, “If my mom doesn’t give me food…?! Can’t you understand?! Don’t you know Mom?! Mom!”
Can we live like this? Can’t we work for tomorrow but not be worried? With calmness and our own choice? Why do we forget God’s Kindness? Usually if we think, we’ll believe that God is kind. Why do we even start being suspicious about God? Because the substance of our life is a test. We must be alone while being tested. Then, we think that we are completely alone. When we think that we are alone, we think about our future like Hazrat Adam (‘a).
“Shall I direct you to the Tree of Eternity?” Satan is the cursed one who constantly tempts us. He drags us to the forbidden tree so that we think about our future interests. Don’t be afraid! Your future interests are in God’s Hands.
Why have you forgotten God’s Kindness? We are not alone. There is God. God loves us. This feeling that you are alone is a false feeling. The same feeling that Hazrat Adam (‘a) had too. Satan said, “Think of yourself.” And he dragged him to the forbidden tree. Never go towards the forbidden tree because you feel lonely. God is very kind.

Do you love the Imam of the Time (aj)? Help increase his strength. I swear that you will regret on the Day of Resurrection! If you even have a moment of free time, take a step to increase the strength of religion. Otherwise, I’m afraid we will be similar to a person who went to the Commander of the Faithful (as) and said, “I love you.” The Imam told him, “You are lying.” No superfluous compliments!
Be zealous in the same way that the Zionists are about their own group. I plead with you. They all have one thing in mind. Are we like that now? No, we’re not. Do you love the Imam of the Time? How much do you love him? Are you being truthful? Do you love him? We should love him, right? So you should want to see him at the peak of power.
“When will you see us and we will see you, while you have lifted up the flag of victory? Will that day come when you will see us surrounding you, and you will lead the world community?” [Nudbah Supplication] When will that time come that you will look at us and see us as the first circle surrounding you and you are the Imam of the people? What does this mean? Imagine this scene. We are surrounding the Imam as guards and the main people, and the Imam is looking at us and he is the leader of the people. This prayer is like a movie. It’s depicting this scene.
“Will that day come when you will see us surrounding you, and you will lead the world?” And you are at the peak of power. “When will you see us and we will see you, while you have lifted up the flag of victory?” And you are holding up the flag of power and victory above your head at the height of your power. O Ibn al-Hasan, I want you to be powerful! When will this day come?
This is affection! Loving the Imam of the Time means loving him to be powerful. Do you love the Imam of the Time? Increase his power in the world. Everyone should do whatever they can! Make a blog or a website. Or use the social media. Increase his power little by little. Create power in the media. Don’t be passive! Loving the Imam of the Time means loving him to be powerful. Do you love the Imam of the Time? Increase his power in the world. O Ibn al-Hasan, I want you to be powerful!

Let me love You

Why do I like my prayer to finish quickly?

Sometimes when I pray I don’t know why I like the prayer to finish sooner. I look for an excuse so that I can finish the prayer sooner and go do my work. I know myself well. It rarely happens that I pray eagerly. Sometimes, I sit with my friends for hours talking and don’t notice the time passing. But, I don’t know why when I want to pray… God, why am I not in the mood to pray? Some problem doesn’t let me greatly enjoy praying the way people like Ayatollah Bahjat did.
*****
In his high position, Imam Sajjad (‘a) said, “God, whenever I decided, prepared for and started praying (at dawn) You made me feel sleepy and took away the mood for supplicating.” [Abu Hamza Thumali Supplication] The Imam was always in the mood for worshiping. So, what was he seeing at that high level?
“Perhaps You saw me to be one of the ignorant ones. So, You disappointed me of Your mercy. Maybe You didn’t want to hear my prayers, so You sent me away. What has happened to me?!” [Abu Hamza Thumali Supplication]
The supplication continues, “Maybe You saw me to be one of the ignorant ones.” What has happened that You don’t let me talk to You?! “No one can have faith without the permission of God.” (Qur’an 10:100) We shouldn’t think they have laid out a red carpet and are pleading us. No! God says, “I am the One Who should allow him.”
Have you seen how when you try to bring some people to the path you are on, no matter how much you try, they won’t come. You want to take them to good gatherings. Whatever you do, they can’t come. We tell some people, “Let’s go to a religious gathering.” They reply, “I don’t have time for it.” Yes, you don’t have time. God says, “If I don’t want a person to come to Me, I keep him so busy that he doesn’t have time to come.”
“No one can have faith without the permission of God.” (Qur’an 10:100) God must permit us to fall in love with goodness. God tells His Prophet in the beginning of the Qur’an, “Some don’t feel good, and I ruin their mood even more!” “(Muhammad), you cannot guide whomever you love, but God guides whomever He wants.” (Qur’an 28:56) I don’t want some people’s hearts to turn to Me. Say, “God, why don’t You make me love You? Up until now, I thought I don’t fall in love myself. Now, I have understood that it’s in Your hands! Did those who approach You come themselves?! God, I have come to ask for Your permission. Let me become a believer!” If a person comes half-heartedly, God says, “Angels, don’t give it to him. What is he thinking?!”
A person stopped Prophet Moses (‘a) and told him, “Go tell your God, ‘Till when shall I keep sinning and not see any reaction from You? Won’t You punish me?!’” He was mocking. After supplicating God, Prophet Moses asked Him, “What should I tell that sinful servant?” God replied, “Tell him, ‘I have given you the worst punishment possible. You don’t see any reaction from Me?! See how when they talk about Me in front of you, you don’t like it! This is the worst punishment I can give a servant so that he won’t turn to Me! I don’t want to see you.’”
Beg God with empty hands and say, “Why don’t You captivate me? You forgave me. Now, make me fall in love with what is good so that I long for it!”
*****
God, I know my enthusiasm for praying is little. God, revive my enthusiasm for praying in my heart. God, now that with Your grace, You allowed me to be among those who pray, do a favor to Your servant and cause me to love You.
*****
Say, “God, why don’t You make me love You? Up until now, I thought I don’t fall in love myself. Now, I have understood that it’s in Your hands!”
