Why do you want to become an employee?

Don’t be afraid; take a risk!

Do you agree an employee doesn’t work as hard as one who works for himself? How many hours does an employee work usefully in Iran? I ask you not to answer me. It’s such a disgrace. I ask you not to answer! Who can stop bribery? No judiciary can! A government, which has many employees, cannot stop corruption! It’s impossible! Even if you stop bribery, you definitely cannot stop incompetence.
A person asked Imam Sadiq (‘a), “A person is working in trade and making money. If he works for someone else and is paid as an employee or a worker, they’ll pay him the same as when he is working in trade himself. Is it alright to do this?” The Imam replied, “He shouldn’t be an employee when he can make money himself. He should get his sustenance from God, the Almighty, and work in trade. If he becomes an employee, he has blocked sustenance from himself.” If a person, who can make money himself becomes an employee or a hireling, he has blocked his sustenance. Why did he block his sustenance? God says, “You didn’t want to take the risk? You clung to an employer? So go; I’ve blocked your sustenance.”
Imam Ali (‘a) said, “If you can manage to do so, don’t allow there to be a wealthy person between you and God (to give you a salary). Because, in any case you will receive what is yours and your share.” [Nahj al-Balaghah, letter no. 31] You’ll receive your share. Don’t be afraid; take a risk! Why do you want to become an employee? Are you afraid you cannot make money yourself?
The Imam tells us not to be afraid. Be brave and you’ll receive your share. Don’t be afraid! Take a risk. Why do you become an employee? You’ll receive your share. One may say, “We have honorable employees too. Talk about this. Don’t disrespect them!” “Yes, we do have honorable employees. But, that’s all I can say.” “Praise them more.” “I don’t want to. I’m afraid people will become honorable employees (instead of working for themselves.)” “But, every workplace has some employees and workers. Everyone can’t be an employer!” “I’m saying that if ten people get together, start producing something and work together, won’t they all be employers?!” “I can’t allow that! I am more capable than others! I should work and others earn money from this?!”
Oh! Look at these people who claim to be awaiting the Imam! Being an employee is not good, unless a person is forced to.
