Why Do the Shia Not Trust Sunni Hadith? | Hassan al-Qadri

This lecture addresses the question of why Twelver Shiʿa scholarship does not accept Sunni ḥadīth literature as authoritative and explains the importance of this issue within Islamic epistemology. It outlines four central reasons for Shiʿa distrust of Sunni ḥadīth: the Sunni doctrine of the universal uprightness of the Companions and the absence of systematic scrutiny of their reliability; the historical alignment of Sunni religious tradition with ruling governments and the resulting incentive to transmit reports that legitimise political authority; the censorship or omission of narrations that criticise certain Companions; and the alteration of ḥadīth wording in order to protect the moral standing of the Companions. Through these points, the lecture highlights the methodological, historical, and theological foundations underlying the Shiʿa rejection of Sunni ḥadīth transmission. #sunni #shia #hadith
