[0:05][Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] allah for the
[1:53]hastening of the reappearance of the master the savior the avenger god's
[1:58]proof muhammad received many individuals who advised him against going to iraq
[2:30]those included people like abdullah they included people like abdullah imam hussain's
[2:45]cousin and they also included people very close to the imam like
[2:50]his own brother muhammad among others who all said the same thing
[2:56]which is that we know the people of kufa to be treasonous
[3:02]and treacherous we know that they won't fulfill their obligations their commitments
[3:10]that they've made to you yes they've sent sixteen thousand letters back
[3:16]full of letters where they've invited the imam to come to kufa
[3:21]so that they could support him they could help him revolt against
[3:26]the government of yazidi but they won't keep their promise they won't
[3:33]stay true to their word they've all said this in one way
[3:39]or another to imam al-hussein the imam responded to each of them
[3:44]in his own way but then he made a declaration listen carefully
[3:49]tonight is a very special night we're getting closer and closer to
[3:55]the 11th hour to the day of ashura if any of us
[4:02]here tonight or watching this is lagging behind if we happen to
[4:11]feel this shake in our resolve if we're not serious then there's
[4:20]not much time left listen to what the imam said upon leaving
[4:25]the holy city of mecca towards kufa now also try and understand
[4:35]the context of the sermon of imam al-hussein because hajj which is
[4:39]one of the pillars of this faith is being broken imam al-hussein
[4:45]was meant as far as the pilgrims are concerned was meant to
[4:51]perform the pilgrimage to the house of allah wa ta'ala and yet
[4:57]imam al-hussein decides to stop the pilgrimage to leave the city of
[5:10]mecca in the middle of hajj but before he did that the
[5:16]imam gave the sermon in which he said and i quote he
[5:21]said death has been written for the children of adam the way
[5:40]a necklace surrounds the neck of a bachelorette what this means we
[5:48]might get a chance to discuss it in the upcoming nights because
[5:54]my focus is on on another part of the sermon of imam
[5:58]al-hussein why the imam describes death as a necklace that beautifies the
[6:06]neck of a young girl of all the different descriptions the imam
[6:11]could have provided he uses this we might get a chance to
[6:17]explain this later on inshaallah in the upcoming nights but then the
[6:22]imam says he says i have been given the choice of a
[6:33]final departure from this world i am going to die now why
[6:38]is the imam saying this because everybody was warning the imam about
[6:42]how he might get killed that he's putting himself in harm's way
[6:46]that he's risking his life so the imam is telling them i
[6:51]know better than all of you that death is coming that's why
[6:57]he begins this sermon by talking about death and then he says
[7:03]this isn't just about death in general i am going to face
[7:08]my death then he says he says and you should know that
[7:24]i am so eager to meet my predecessors my ancestors my grandfather
[7:28]my father my mother my brother the way yaakov yearned and long
[7:37]to meet his son yusuf that's how much i'm eager so don't
[7:40]try and scare me away with talks talking about death about how
[7:46]i'm putting myself in harm's way i couldn't be more eager than
[7:51]to meet my ancestors my predecessors then he says and this is
[7:58]the focus of my talk tonight he says bella [Music] he says
[8:24]i can see you know how when something's about to happen and
[8:31]you know exactly what's going to happen it's almost as though you
[8:35]can see it the imam says it's as if my limbs my
[8:41]joints my filaments will be torn up by the wolves of the
[8:48]desert is a reference to the joints that keep the skeleton together
[8:56]i can see how which is a reference to the beasts and
[9:07]wolves that dwell in the desert these are wild beasts these are
[9:12]vicious animals have you ever seen those wildlife videos where when these
[9:17]hyenas or these wolves they catch their prey how they bite on
[9:22]their prey and then they shake themselves so that they could take
[9:25]a bite off of their prey this is he says i can
[9:36]see how these wild beasts will tear apart my limbs my joints
[9:40]then he says and they will fill their stomachs their empty stomachs
[9:52]with my limbs is a reference to these bags that you would
[10:02]put for instance bread in them the imam describes these bags these
[10:09]vessels he describes them as hungry bags he says they will fill
[10:14]these bags and their stomachs with my limbs with my body parts
[10:22]then the imam says other things which i don't want to talk
[10:26]about tonight i want to focus on this description that the imam
[10:33]provides for his death and his martyrdom now the part about him
[10:41]being torn apart the part about him being dismembered may my life
[10:46]and everything i have be ransomed even for a single drop of
[10:51]his blessed blood that part we can kind of understand because they
[11:00]did to the sacred figure of abba abdullah hussain unspeakable things things
[11:05]i can't just mention casually in the middle of a modulus things
[11:11]that you could probably just give glimpses about during the maktal that's
[11:15]recited on the day of unspeakable heinous things that you might know
[11:23]just a tiny bit about that part we understand but the part
[11:30]about filling empty stomachs and hungry vessels with the joints and limbs
[11:38]and the body of imam al-hussein what's that all about despite the
[11:47]atrocious and heinous things they did to the sacred figure of the
[11:52]imam we know that no cannibalism was involved nobody actually took a
[12:02]bite off the body of the imam like hind the mother of
[12:07]muawiyah the grandmother of yazid did to the body of hamz that
[12:12]didn't happen on the day of so clearly what the imam is
[12:20]describing here is figurative it's a metaphor it's not literal so what
[12:28]is he talking about in arabic as well as other languages you
[12:39]might say that so-and-so that he left his home unprotected unguarded in
[12:54]iraq in afghanistan places where there is no rule of law he
[12:58]left his home when he came back he noticed that the house
[13:05]had been eaten by such and such again this is figurative it's
[13:10]not literal the house being eaten means what means it was stolen
[13:15]it means it was confiscated it means it was taken forcefully by
[13:22]someone sold off the money used to fund somebody's lifestyle right that's
[13:27]what we mean when we say this was eaten figuratively speaking so
[13:33]what is the imam talking about here his limbs his body parts
[13:40]being eaten stomachs being filled bags being filled what is he referring
[13:48]to let me give you a few examples to illustrate and to
[13:51]help understand so that we can avoid falling into this trap the
[13:58]trap of being among the manifestations of the people who eat the
[14:01]limbs and body of imam and hussein who cannibalize the sacred figure
[14:09]of the granddaughter of rasulullah what it actually means is when we
[14:18]compromise on the blood of imam al-hussein for personal gain that's basically
[14:26]what the imam is referring to but let's give some examples used
[14:34]to say [Music] um there was a time when in order for
[14:50]you to survive so that you wouldn't be killed you had to
[14:54]curse amir al-mu'manin you don't have to go all the way back
[15:03]to the era of muawiyah and the umayyads and the abbasids no
[15:07]five years ago six years ago seven years ago in iraq this
[15:13]was common practice they would put up a false checkpoint members of
[15:22]isis using military swag that was used by the iraqi army and
[15:29]they would wave cars to stop when the cars stopped they would
[15:35]go up to the bus or they'd go to the car and
[15:38]they would say we'd like to see identification papers they would pick
[15:43]out people based on their names if your name was hassan hussain
[15:49]jaffar abbas right they would immediately identify you as a shia they
[15:54]would pull you out and they would execute you by the side
[15:57]of the road this happened more times than we could count again
[16:04]this is in our lifetime and so this was something that was
[16:09]practiced from the time of the oppressive caliphs all the way to
[16:15]the 21st century and god knows whether there's ever going to be
[16:20]an end to this vitriol to this blind hatred towards the bait
[16:27]and by extension towards their followers we don't know it probably will
[16:33]never stop and so in order for you to survive you would
[16:39]be given the choice of either cursing emir al-mu'mineen or dying or
[16:47]getting killed again this happened in iraq over and over again so
[16:53]they would say here's a picture of the shrine of ali spit
[16:57]on this or curse the imam okay now amir gave a license
[17:06]to his followers such that in order for them to preserve their
[17:13]lives he said you can curse me if you find yourself in
[17:19]that situation i allow you to curse you might think to yourself
[17:26]i'd never do that i would die before i ever hurl an
[17:31]insult towards my master amir al-mu'min but you'd be wrong because the
[17:36]imam not only gave us a license to do that the bait
[17:41]have instructed us specifically to preserve our lives and practice what we
[17:48]refer to as dissimulation in other words i know we're kind of
[17:57]branching off a little bit but these are crucial subjects that we
[18:00]need to touch on imam says if someone does not practice takiyah
[18:12]he or she has no religion why because takiyah and dissimulation and
[18:17]the preservation of the lives of the shia even at the expense
[18:25]of cursing is my religion the imam says and the religion of
[18:30]my forefathers in other words sometimes it's not a choice that you
[18:35]get to make you must practice especially when the matter involves other
[18:43]believers especially when exposing the truth as it really is puts others
[18:49]in harm's way you have no choice here no i want to
[18:54]speak the truth you can't because speaking the truth spills shia blood
[18:59]speaking the truth here means that others will be killed or harmed
[19:05]or even if it's just insulted you have no right atta i
[19:14]can't just say oh but everybody now is speaking about their religion
[19:18]freely so i get to do the same thing no you go
[19:21]you don't no you don't everybody's making movies about their religion why
[19:26]is it that only the shia can't do that well because the
[19:30]shia have scholars they have imams they have leaders who have specifically
[19:34]told them to practice it's not up to you look at the
[19:42]practice of our mirage look at our ulama look at the jurists
[19:48]of this faith the jurists are who they're experts in the holy
[19:52]quran and the teachings of the prophet and the albeit they're the
[19:57]experts who tell you what's right and what's wrong what's haram that's
[20:02]why they're called fukaha you have to consult them just because i
[20:09]happen to be an overly zealous shia who wants to go out
[20:13]there and challenge the whole world it's not up to you i
[20:21]can get on the sit on the pulpit and say whatever i
[20:26]want no you don't it's not up to you especially when the
[20:32]only time you're actually doing that is when you're safe if i
[20:39]was in harm's way if my life was in danger i wouldn't
[20:42]do this i'll only say it when i can ensure my own
[20:46]safety and the safety of my family when i have the protection
[20:50]of some western government knowing that no one's going to do anything
[20:54]stupid in this part of the world that's when i feel safe
[21:00]enough to talk about this putting others in harm's way what hypocrisy
[21:04]is this if you're serious if you're brave enough go out there
[21:08]in kabul and say these things go out there in avamiya and
[21:15]baghdad and say these things and the imam here tells us you
[21:23]can even curse me imagine then he says and i'll get back
[21:28]to the question of tapia in a little bit um as for
[21:34]disassociating from me don't do that but you might say isn't cursing
[21:40]a form of disassociation of course it is right so what's the
[21:44]distinction between these two what's the difference when the imam says you
[21:49]can curse me but you can't disassociate what does that mean listen
[21:53]carefully again this applies to all of us you and i could
[21:57]very well fall into this trap this association is different from cursing
[22:03]in this way there were tyrants who would pull a shia aside
[22:09]and say curse if he cursed the imam they would let him
[22:13]go but there were tyrants like muhammad and they're not content with
[22:22]just hearing someone curse ali abner you see this is why someone
[22:25]like again this might be a question that pops in your head
[22:29]if tapia is so critical if we must observe the rules concerning
[22:35]the simulation for the preservation of shia life is so important what
[22:42]about methamphetamine what about what about kumalib nizhiyad what about all of
[22:51]these people shouldn't they have practiced taqiyya why did they do things
[22:55]so that they got killed or crucified or beheaded didn't they know
[23:02]about takiya because this is one of the tricks used by those
[23:04]who try to exploit tapia they tell you well we have these
[23:08]people and they're our heroes and look at them they abandoned tapia
[23:11]because that's how it's supposed to be the answer is very simple
[23:14]muawiyah and yazid and other tyrants like them they were way ahead
[23:21]of the curve they weren't naive enough to simply hear someone curse
[23:26]amir al-mu'manin and they'd be like okay thank you very much we
[23:29]accept your allegiance you're a good man from now on that's not
[23:32]how it worked they expected these individuals to disassociate from amir al-mu'man
[23:37]and this association in this case was to completely abandon an allegiance
[23:45]to him in your practical everyday wasn't just about a curse it
[23:52]was about making sure that we observe you 24 7 and see
[23:59]how you live your life and if there is the slightest connection
[24:03]to ali ibn's you're exposed they weren't content with just a curse
[24:08]an insult to amir al-mu'min you see the difference he says don't
[24:15]disassociate let me give you an example to illustrate did you know
[24:29]egypt was a shia country yes the fatimids who invaded egypt who
[24:36]led the fatimid government there for a lengthy period of time they
[24:42]were ismaili meaning they only believed in six imams up to imam
[24:48]assad and then they branched off they broke off but they were
[24:52]shira a type of shia and egypt was a shia country al-azhar
[24:56]was established by shia clergy what happened to egypt why is it
[25:04]a sunni country now why is it no longer shia the answer
[25:09]is disassociation you see when you take takiyah again as i said
[25:15]don't get me wrong is obligatory is part of our religion tapia
[25:23]must be practiced there are times when it becomes optional when it's
[25:26]your own life but if it involves other people it must be
[25:28]practice all these things i just talked about however when you take
[25:33]takiyah to an extreme it leads to disassociation in bara how you
[25:40]see somebody who lives in so-and-so country no need to mention names
[25:46]and you're like do you go to husainiyat in that country they're
[25:51]like no because you know it's not a shia country they've put
[25:54]a lot of restrictions on us they don't let us hold majalis
[25:58]in our homes they don't allow us to open hossein they don't
[26:02]permit us to have any public majalis of any kind if we
[26:07]hold private majalis then we have fear that they might there might
[26:10]actually be repercussions for that i might get fired i might get
[26:15]thrown out of the country my work permit might be cancelled my
[26:18]residency might be revoked and so you're like okay so you live
[26:22]in that country and you've been there for how long now five
[26:24]years ten years not a single mechanism like no we can't because
[26:28]you know and all and then you're like okay well what about
[26:33]your kids and they say well you know the kids you know
[26:36]they live with us and they're they're good people we try and
[26:40]do a good enough job to raise them okay what have you
[26:43]named your kids but you know we can't name them hassan hussain
[26:46]ali fatima and so we know we've given them neutral names right
[26:51]we call them again i don't want to mention names because we
[26:57]might call them khalid we might call them you know names of
[27:03]the sahaba and they'll look for that weird name that some imam's
[27:08]sister was named right like yeah yeah we're going to go with
[27:11]that because if it's like tu shia then we're going to have
[27:17]issues the kids at school they might ask them questions so you
[27:22]see what's happening here no access to religious education oh we got
[27:27]youtube as if youtube's gonna establish your religion for you we've delegated
[27:34]and outsourced the discipline the child rearing the upbringing of our children
[27:39]the next generation to youtube [Music] what an abysmal state is it
[27:46]that we're in when youtube is what we refer to when we're
[27:50]trying to gain religious knowledge with all the trash and the poison
[27:57]and the garbage that's in it even the religious stuff is poisoned
[28:02]let alone the non-religious stuff yeah we have youtube and so what
[28:09]happens is day after day after day year after year after year
[28:14]in five years in 10 years in 20 years you might still
[28:18]be a shia but certainly not your kids this is called taking
[28:23]tariyah to an extreme where it becomes this is disassociation from the
[28:31]other bait this is like not playing any role in your life
[28:33]whatsoever except that yeah we love him during the celebrations and commemorations
[28:43]there's nothing happening these kids have no clue wallahi brothers and sisters
[28:50]we can never be thankful to allah for the chance to be
[28:56]able to attend these majalis let's ask allah tonight in the name
[29:02]of the abbas that he never takes this gift from us this
[29:05]honor that we've been bestowed because those who are deprived of these
[29:09]majalis of these gatherings they are the ones who realize just what
[29:18]a big gigantic hole there is in their hearts there is spirituality
[29:24]here with every single one of you luminous faces getting together in
[29:30]honor and remembrance of imam al-hussein you charge the atmosphere the angels
[29:36]they add to that aura i'll mention this even though i didn't
[29:42]plan on saying it but i attended a gathering [Music] at a
[29:49]particular university in the united states and it was right after ashura
[29:56]so we had a meeting with all the university students who went
[29:59]to that university and they were talking about their experience in muharram
[30:04]and so there were a few people who came from a particular
[30:09]ethnicity i won't mention it and there were mostly women for some
[30:15]reason maybe one or two men as well who all complained about
[30:19]the majalis they all said yeah we went to these majalis but
[30:23]the speakers it's you know they can't connect with the youth and
[30:28]they were a little too aggressive and too emotional and we don't
[30:34]even know why we're crying and was it a different language our
[30:39]language is english their language is something else and yeah we kind
[30:41]of understand what they say because they weren't from the same ethnicity
[30:45]the same community but we'd rather have english lectures as opposed to
[30:49]those lectures in that language and so they all complained one after
[30:53]the other again it was like a a meeting to sort of
[30:57]get to know what they went through their experiences in muharram so
[31:00]they all finished talking criticizing the majalis then this lebanese sister got
[31:07]up and she said you know the closest modulus to my house
[31:10]is one where this language is spoken i don't speak a single
[31:18]word of this particular language it's completely foreign to me and yet
[31:22]every night myself my husband and my nine-month-old child we went to
[31:29]the medjlist because even though i don't understand a single word that
[31:33]the speaker is saying or that the eulogizer is saying i went
[31:39]there for the atmosphere i went there because the walls and the
[31:42]ceilings they all cried out ya hussain to me that's as close
[31:49]as i can get because the next specialist where they do speak
[31:52]arabic or english was too far from me and so that was
[31:56]the only option but i went there anyway may allah never deprive
[32:02]of this deprive us of this privilege now the people who live
[32:08]in these countries in their minds countries where the shia are persecuted
[32:12]and they're a minority in their minds they're like yeah you know
[32:16]it is what it is i have to practice tapia at the
[32:22]end of the day my business is here my job is here
[32:26]and little by little what they don't know is that that atmosphere
[32:31]where it lacks the remembrance of imam al-hussein and that connection a
[32:38]direct and clear connection to amir al-mait and the imam of the
[32:41]time it chips away at their soul at their beliefs and when
[32:47]the next generation comes it's all gone i said to somebody who
[32:54]lived in a country which banned hijab i said what the hell
[32:57]are you doing here i'm not saying that if you have absolutely
[33:01]nowhere else to go then you should just jump into the sea
[33:06]but if you have the option of moving migrating to another country
[33:13]go save your religion save your faith this is no longer about
[33:16]topia this is disassociation this is you showing ambivalence towards your values
[33:24]and your principles and the rules of your religion this is you
[33:30]showing indifference you don't care enough about it you care more about
[33:32]your business and about your job again i'm sorry i don't want
[33:39]to mention examples that would make some people uncomfortable but when i
[33:43]compromise on my religion by giving a weird neutral name to my
[33:49]child just so this child wouldn't be bullied at school or wouldn't
[33:51]have any issues getting a job down the line that compromise begets
[33:57]another compromise that compromise reflect is reflects and is expressive of a
[34:07]mentality the mentality of compromise is never confined to one thing i
[34:12]will compromise on other things and again with time the impact of
[34:19]that will become clear when you live in a free country like
[34:22]this take every advantage of every right that's been given to you
[34:29]you have the right to choose the names of the bait for
[34:34]your children take advantage of it you have the right to use
[34:40]combination names where people can tell that your son is a shia
[34:42]a mile away take advantage of it you have the right to
[34:48]pray wherever you want take advantage of it even if you can
[34:51]pray in the office in some corner room pray out there in
[34:54]public in the park take advantage of it be as visible as
[35:00]you can be proud of your faith be proud of your religion
[35:02]your values your leaders your imams i remember years ago somebody came
[35:07]to me and said my daughter is finishing high school this year
[35:12]she wants to go to university next year and now she feels
[35:15]really uncomfortable because it's university and there's a lot of pressure obviously
[35:19]she's going growing older as well and she wants to throw the
[35:22]hijab away should she do that or should she not go to
[35:29]university should i as a father pressure her to not go to
[35:31]university i said look i'm not going to be someone who encourages
[35:34]her to go to university because god knows what's going to happen
[35:37]there especially if she's not married and the same thing applies to
[35:40]men as well my suggestion to people is always get married then
[35:45]go to university at least try and immunize yourself from all the
[35:48]filth that you're gonna face in there right do what everybody else
[35:53]is doing i mean come on everybody has a boyfriend or a
[35:54]girlfriend at university you're the only one who suddenly can't make it
[36:00]work you're the only person who can't study and can't focus if
[36:03]you have a life partner someone who supports you someone who cares
[36:06]for you someone who cherishes you suddenly you're the only person everybody
[36:11]goes through the turmoil the ups and downs of breakups and relationships
[36:14]you're the only one who can't handle the pressure come on give
[36:17]me a break but i'm not gonna tell tell you to not
[36:22]send her you to university instead i will tell her to go
[36:27]to university wearing her hijab and being proud of it wallahi brothers
[36:31]and sisters we're living in an age where values are upside down
[36:35]where the most sinful act is a source of pride for some
[36:40]people and my hijab is a source of shame my beard is
[36:45]a source of shame my salat my remembrance of imam al-hussein is
[36:52]a source of shame why it shows that weakness inside of us
[36:55]which we talked about last night be proud cherish and honor these
[37:03]values that came to us on the back of rivers of blood
[37:10]not just that of the but their companions and their followers over
[37:17]a thousand years of massacre after massacre carnage after carnage that's why
[37:24]worship and now we're ashamed of it let's not take take to
[37:34]an extreme where it becomes disassociation that's one example and again there
[37:41]are many many others where you if you look hard enough you'll
[37:48]see compromises being made and imam al-hussein and his limbs and his
[37:57]blood becomes the price we pay we compromise on the joints of
[38:03]abba abdullah hussain so that i could live just a little bit
[38:05]more comfortably let's not be one of those people they fill their
[38:21]stomachs how do they fill their stomachs how why does the imam
[38:26]describe some people as benefiting from eating my body let me give
[38:32]you a couple of examples here as well comes to imam assad
[38:40]he says to him the companions of amir al-mu'min [Music] they were
[38:49]told by their imam imam salam tamar was one of these people
[38:58]the imam would tell him when he's going to die where he's
[39:03]going to die how he's going to die and under what circumstances
[39:08]when maithamu tamar was threatened by abba dillahi bin ziyad that he
[39:14]would be executed he said to him i know exactly what you're
[39:18]going to do because my imam has already told me that he
[39:21]even said i'm not going to get killed now because my imam
[39:25]said to me that the disk of the sun will be half
[39:28]covered by the horizon and so it's too soon now it'll be
[39:33]in half an hour's time for instance so amir al-mu'manin told methamphetamine
[39:39]and others and others all of these details about their death says
[39:48]why don't you teach us the same things you have the same
[39:53]knowledge of amir al-mu'min you are the heir you the inheritor of
[39:56]the knowledge of ali so why don't you tell us these things
[40:00]so that we can be prepared for our death so he has
[40:04]a very legitimate reason as well it's not just because it's interesting
[40:08]to know when i'm going to die no i want to get
[40:12]ready do you know what the imam said to him the imam
[40:14]said to him the difference between you lot and the companions of
[40:20]is that they had a lock on their mouths what does that
[40:30]mean we have a whole category of hadith again this is connected
[40:34]to the discussion on we have a category of hadith this is
[40:40]in sahih al-kafi in kafi the blessed book of al-qaeda and others
[40:44]which talk about how we should not be [Music] with you the
[40:54]meaning of media is a nowadays i guess most people uh can
[41:00]only relate with that when they're in their car it's a radio
[41:05]a transistor radio in arabic is called media the imams have told
[41:11]us to not be media why because media is something that broadcasts
[41:17]sound and our imams have told us that you shouldn't broadcast everything
[41:21]irrespective of who's listening meaning keep a secret learn to keep our
[41:33]secrets don't say anything to just about anybody and we have so
[41:37]many a hadith from the albeit about this subject why let me
[41:42]give you a couple of examples a sahih sajadee you're all familiar
[41:47]with it alhamdulillah try and read even if it's just a couple
[41:53]of lines a day from sahaifa the book is attributed to who
[41:58]imam is the name if you read and i encourage you to
[42:04]do this if you can when you go back home tonight read
[42:07]the introduction to sahih said which is really the story behind how
[42:15]we got a hold of the sahih in other words it's the
[42:19]is of the sahih it's the chain of transmission how did we
[42:23]access the sahih in a nutshell i'll just mention one portion of
[42:30]it the story goes something like this a man by the name
[42:32]of no a companion of imam assad he says that i met
[42:43]yahyab nazid who was he is the son of zaid who was
[42:59]zaid zaid was the revolutionary who rose against the umayyad dynasty but
[43:03]was eventually killed and crucified was martyred so mutawa kilip naharun on
[43:13]his way to horasan this is after zade had been killed his
[43:18]son yahya whose shrine is actually on the outskirts of meshed if
[43:21]you ever go to meshed try and visit his shrine he says
[43:24]i met him along the way i said to him where are
[43:27]you headed he said i'm headed towards khorasan he said where have
[43:33]you come from yahya asked where have you come from he said
[43:37]i just came from mecca he said did you meet my cousins
[43:41]meaning imam assad because they were cousins right he's the grandson of
[43:45]imam sadjad imam assad is also the grandson from imam hussain imam
[43:53]yes the son of imam as sajad so he says did you
[43:59]meet my cousin in mecca he said yes i did meet him
[44:03]he said how is he he said he is well meaning as
[44:06]well yahya said did he tell you anything about me he said
[44:11]yes he did but i'd rather not tell you he said look
[44:15]tell me i want to know if there is if there is
[44:20]a bad omen if there is something bad about to happen to
[44:22]me i'm not afraid of death it's okay you can talk to
[44:27]me he said well your cousin imam assad said that yahya ibn
[44:32]zaid will go to and he will be killed and he will
[44:36]be crucified just like his father was in other words the imam
[44:41]has foretold your future yes the imam knows what's going to happen
[44:51]to me and if he said i'm going to get killed because
[44:54]the intention wasn't to be killed the intention was to go and
[44:57]overthrow the regime but if he said that this is going to
[44:59]happen to me then it's going to happen to me now that
[45:04]i know i'm going to die yep nazi said i want to
[45:09]give you a secret that i want you to deliver to my
[45:14]cousins in mecca he said what's that he said it's a book
[45:18]of duas and supplications this is a reference to what to say
[45:24]listen carefully i want you to give i want to give you
[45:27]this book and i want you to promise that you're going to
[45:32]preserve it protect it and keep it as a secret until you
[45:37]hand it over to my cousins so then [Music] he took the
[45:45]book and went back gave it to imam assad and at that
[45:52]point had already been martyred here's a question to all of you
[45:55]why is sahiba said judy a secret think about it it's a
[46:02]book of supplications it's a book of dua's why should that be
[46:05]preserved and protected and not shown or exposed to others well there
[46:10]are many reasons for that especially at the time in the context
[46:15]of the time of yahweh this mattered a sahih idea is a
[46:21]book of supplications there is nothing controversial in it there is nobody
[46:26]being cursed in it so why should it be protected number one
[46:29]because there was a fear that if the umayyads got a hold
[46:37]of it they would destroy it and we would never receive it
[46:40]number one number two because they might attribute the beautiful gems of
[46:46]supplications and duas in this book in other words intellectual theft the
[46:56]stealing of intellectual property which is something that was done to the
[47:01]bait [Music] in the most shocking manner so many of the words
[47:10]of amir have been attributed to every tom dick and harry to
[47:13]people like sometimes they'd say some bedouin said such and such and
[47:19]it's one of the most incredible words of wisdom by amir al-mu'min
[47:23]but just so they don't mention his name they say a bedouin
[47:29]said such and such so the intellectual property rights of the bait
[47:34]were always violated the imams yep in this particular instance didn't want
[47:38]this book to be attributed to this and that so it had
[47:44]to be protected now unfortunately we don't have a lot of time
[47:48]there's so much to talk about this very specific subject because you
[47:53]might think to yourself what's that got to do with me what's
[47:56]the relevance to my life well the relevance is this the teachings
[48:00]of the albeit brothers and sisters are not a commodity for me
[48:05]to buy and sell flesh and blood and bones of abba abdullah
[48:09]hussain is not something for me to gain personally from at the
[48:18]expense of the imams it should be the other way around i
[48:22]should throw myself under the bus if the honor and the name
[48:28]and the reputation of the is at stake ahmad duhani story is
[48:35]famous somebody came to imam assad he said today i was in
[48:39]court and ammar duhani who was one of the followers of the
[48:45]bait he came before a judge known as ibn abi laila he's
[48:49]a judge that worked as part of the umayyad regime so the
[48:56]judge says to ahmad duhani said you know what you seem like
[49:00]a good man but your testimony cannot be accepted in my court
[49:03]he said why he said because you're a rafale you're a shia
[49:08]so your testimony can't be accepted it holds no value ahmad duhani
[49:14]broke down in tears who was called arafali he started crying so
[49:20]ibn abi leila said to him look no hard feelings man it's
[49:24]okay if you become one of us your testimony will be accepted
[49:29]why are you crying he said you fool you imbecile i'm not
[49:33]crying because you've insulted me because you called me out awfully i'm
[49:37]crying because for the first time in my life i thought to
[49:42]myself hang on a second people actually see me as a shia
[49:46]people attribute me to imam jaffar assad and all of my sins
[49:55]all of my shortcomings all of my flaws all of my crimes
[49:59]all of the hideous heinous things that i do they're also attributed
[50:04]to the shia of the albeit people see me with all of
[50:09]the problems that i bring to the table and they call me
[50:13]the reputation of imam assad is being damaged by me that's why
[50:19]i'm crying who am i to be a raphaeli why would you
[50:24]call me araphili this is an honor that's bestowed to the sorcerers
[50:29]of faraon who repented and were killed for their allegiance to musa
[50:37]for believing in allah they were the first to be called raphaelis
[50:40]who am i to be arafaili but nowadays it's a hashtag it's
[50:48]a tattoo right it's just a slogan raffali raffali ammar duhani breaks
[50:53]down in tears when this news reached imam assad the imam said
[50:59]if ammar had committed every sin under the sun allah will forgive
[51:05]his sins simply for saying this in other words simply for disassociating
[51:12]himself from us protecting our reputation our honor our name allah will
[51:19]forgive every single one of his sins for that and yet look
[51:26]at us the people who talk who mention the the the hadiths
[51:33]of just for clickbait merits and virtues of amir al-mu'min and that
[51:38]he himself has no clue what they mean right but he'll say
[51:44]it just so he gets a little bit of notoriety a little
[51:47]bit of recognition so that people cheer and clap and recite the
[51:50]salah so the people say oh masha allah how much he understands
[51:55]how much he knows how much he's memorized click bait that's all
[52:00]it is majalis lectures things that are said on this sacred member
[52:06]which is turned into awad as imam said remember on the one
[52:14]hand look at the compromise look look at how they take advantage
[52:19]of this sacred institution on the other hand look at how imam
[52:23]sajad alayhi salaam says you have devalued this institution when that speaker
[52:27]gets up in the presence of yazid and he cursed amir al-mu'manin
[52:33]and imam al-hasan and imam al-hussein and praised yazid and muawiyah what
[52:37]did the imam say to him the imam screamed in the presence
[52:45]of this tyrant pharaon yazidi you've just entered into a transaction right
[53:01]where you have purchased the wrath of god the creator in exchange
[53:08]for what for the happiness of the cree of the creature to
[53:13]make yazid happy with you look what you've done you've angered allah
[53:17]subhanahu wa ta'ala you can go ahead and pick your seat in
[53:24]the fires of hell right now you're done then the imam said
[53:30]to yazid he said give me permission to get up on these
[53:35]pieces of wood he doesn't call them a member pieces of wood
[53:40]chunks of wood that you put together because a member is a
[53:46]sacred institution a member is a place that only qualified scholars get
[53:49]to sit on or at least people who know what they're talking
[53:54]about at least people who know what to say and what not
[53:58]to say imagine you've all been to dentists i imagine or you've
[54:02]seen a dentist's office at some point have you seen their tools
[54:05]have you seen when they when they pull that table and you
[54:08]can see all of these different instruments that they have imagine you
[54:12]watching or me watching a couple of youtube videos and maybe reading
[54:16]a couple of manuals on how a tooth is taken out for
[54:23]instance or cleaned right now you go to that instrument table do
[54:27]you have a clue what you're supposed to do do you know
[54:31]what instrument to pick what not to pick when you're looking at
[54:35]the dentist doing his work you're like he's just picking random instruments
[54:41]here because we're not experts why is it that when it comes
[54:46]to religion any random person gets to express their views and talk
[54:52]about religious topics why why where have we gone as a community
[54:58]what are we doing you as a community you as audience members
[55:01]should be better you should scrutinize you should ask where did this
[55:07]person study who are his teachers which institution did he enroll in
[55:12]who gave him permission to sit on the pulpit where did this
[55:17]person come from just because he happens to be famous doesn't make
[55:21]him qualified because how can we tell the difference between a scholar
[55:26]and an actor an actor can play the role of a scholar
[55:29]better than the scholar himself that's what they do zucchini as the
[55:36]quran says that's what they're good at falsehood is best at manipulating
[55:40]you and deceiving you and fooling you and you might think oh
[55:45]no no i know i can tell the difference but you don't
[55:47]because you don't have the criteria by which to measure these individuals
[55:51]but at the very least which houses did they go to if
[55:56]they went to university that's not good enough because it's like someone
[56:01]saying i became a dentist by going to the hausa the house
[56:04]that teaches one thing university teaches something entirely different you're not going
[56:10]to learn you're not going to learn about your religion from a
[56:15]university you're going to learn how well to criticize religion how to
[56:20]manipulate religion how to analyze religion but not religion itself where did
[56:24]he study where did he go where is his garb does he
[56:31]actually practice what he preaches or is he all over the place
[56:34]and somehow we compartmentalize no no it's okay i know he's got
[56:38]issues there but it's interesting where are we where are we headed
[56:43]we've turned this into chunks of wood rasulullah says to salman he
[56:50]says there was going there is going to be a day when
[56:53]children sit on pulpits yes children not so much in terms of
[57:01]their age but in terms of their knowledge their qualification right let's
[57:09]not compromise on religion let's not sell our religion to cheap brothers
[57:14]and sisters let's ensure that our religion is always front and center
[57:18]that it's the top priority that we never lose connection to it
[57:25]because that's how they work that's how they operate they came to
[57:30]shore and they told him we're about to go to war with
[57:37]al hussein and we want you to do one thing we want
[57:40]you to come up with a religious justification from the very belly
[57:46]of islam that justifies the killing of hussein so that tomorrow on
[57:52]the day of ashura um he says riders of allah now you
[58:06]can head into the battle because you've been given glad tidings of
[58:11]paradise is saying this to his horsemen but in order for us
[58:16]to say this we need to sign off on it we need
[58:22]someone wearing a religious garb or having a religious title or holding
[58:25]a religious office to validate what we're about to do a lot
[58:31]of us are like that we need someone even remotely connected to
[58:34]religion just give me that validation give me that approval so i
[58:40]can do whatever i want in the name of religion these so-called
[58:45]muslim intellectuals today is academics that's exactly what they do what they
[58:51]do is they look at the world around them they find out
[58:57]what's trending right whatever happens to be trending whatever they're talking about
[59:01]at the united nations whatever they're talking about at the level of
[59:06]these human rights organizations right they look at them and they're focusing
[59:11]on like that one thing in islam and they'll be like leave
[59:16]it to me i'll give you all the justification from the very
[59:21]core of religion to explain to you how it's not what you
[59:24]think to completely manipulate god's law and they'll be like okay hijab
[59:35]yes hijab is a problem hijab is a challenge so hijab come
[59:38]on it's not what you think hijab was actually meant to protect
[59:42]the women it was meant to make them anonymous to hide their
[59:49]identity so that no harm would come to them and so today
[59:52]if a woman wears hijab the opposite happens she'll be singled out
[59:56]she'll stand out like a sore thumb and she might even be
[60:01]hurt right so hijab really is about modesty in the heart you
[60:04]have to dig deep down and pull out your inner buddha and
[60:09]sort of that that be in the zen mode and that's really
[60:13]what hijab is all about it's not something you wear because you
[60:16]can wear whatever you want and be whatever you want really it's
[60:21]about the cleanliness of the heart and they'll cite verses from the
[60:27]quran never mind all the verses that specifically mention the word hijab
[60:32]all these things actual articles of clothing but they'll say look quran
[60:37]was revealed for another time this whole thing about females having half
[60:44]the inheritance this was contextual dude it was about a different time
[60:48]when women weren't as independent they had the protection of the state
[60:55]and now it's a whole different world under the pretext of the
[61:00]times being changed they will destroy islam the times are different now
[61:06]never mind never mind that these are laws that don't change these
[61:18]are actual verses of the quran but they'll come up with a
[61:24]justification like that fool who came out and said that the quran
[61:29]is the beginning it's not the end and at first when you
[61:36]hear it you're like wow the quran is the beginning but what
[61:38]they're what they're actually trying to say is the quran is what
[61:44]we use to reform society now there were things the prophet couldn't
[61:48]reform so he just left it now we can reform them wow
[61:50]now we can scrap all of that because it's suppose it's all
[61:55]about reform it's all about reform brothers and sisters when you hear
[61:59]the word reform run in the opposite direction run because in the
[62:04]name of reform they want to snatch away your faith they will
[62:08]not stop until they destroy islam altogether they will throw imam hussein's
[62:14]body to the wolves because to them it's about appeasing others it's
[62:19]about what others say it's about my non-muslim colleagues at work and
[62:24]whether they're happy with my beliefs and my practices again that utter
[62:30]weakness that we talked about last night is exemplified in these individuals
[62:39]and then then there are those who use imam al-hussein to make
[62:46]a quick buck i mean that's gotta be really the worst of
[62:50]the worst so i can make a little bit of money sure
[62:53]it's not wrong to be given an honorarium to be honored and
[62:59]given a gift or something in exchange for your services there's nothing
[63:03]wrong with that but when it becomes a prerequisite when it becomes
[63:09]a precondition one it becomes a dollar figure right what it becomes
[63:14]i'll i won't do this unless i get paid that much and
[63:16]it's contracts and have to be signed and sent and lawyers checking
[63:20]them and stuff like that well not lawyers usually it's his wife
[63:23]or his brother or his cousin when it becomes about that you
[63:28]know there's something deeply wrong with this and again we can all
[63:33]get it doesn't need a rocket scientist says to the disciples he
[63:37]says listen to me put so beautifully as well he says money
[63:44]gold is the disease of religion and a scholar is the one
[63:57]who heals religion fixes it if there is any flaws if you
[64:03]ever see the scholar who is the healer the physician pulling the
[64:11]disease towards himself then you can accuse him in other words don't
[64:17]give him the benefit of the doubt don't say oh maybe this
[64:20]that no no no when you see this person's all about money
[64:23]all about making a quick buck then you know there's something wrong
[64:27]and then the imam says he will never be able to benefit
[64:29]anybody else if he's like that himself so let's scrutinize let's ensure
[64:37]we don't fall into this trap of people using the imams of
[64:40]the bait to their advantage don't compromise not on religion compromise on
[64:47]everything in your life just not on religion look at perhaps the
[64:54]most famous slogan on the day of is this one they severed
[65:00]his right hand what did he say he said if you haven't
[65:13]already memorized it memorize it by god you can cut my limbs
[65:37]off i will forever abadden i will forever defend my religion i
[65:43]will never compromise on my faith and i will continue to defend
[65:51]my master hussein his own brother he calls him imam my master
[65:57]my leader mustafa he's the grandson of rasulullah you can do whatever
[66:09]you want with me he's the one referred to by imam assad
[66:20]so many things have been said about the imam but perhaps perhaps
[66:25]the most indicative of the rank of abbas is what his own
[66:28]brother imam al-hussein said on the day of when he sent him
[66:34]to go and speak to the enemy camp the imam said to
[66:39]him may my soul be ransomed for you o i want to
[66:46]see you on the back of your horse i want to see
[66:52]you in your full glory i want you to ride on your
[66:56]horse and go to them and speak to them benefit and imam
[66:59]hussain says about abbas allahu akbar so much to say on the
[67:11]day of he came to abba abdullah before that he asked his
[67:19]brother to but brothers to head into the battlefield he said to
[67:25]them benefit may i be ransomed for you go i wish to
[67:30]see you die for hussain i wish to see you fulfill your
[67:36]destiny because we all know why our mother raised us she raised
[67:40]us so that we could honor her on this day so that
[67:44]we could do what she wanted us to do on this day
[67:48]go and fight i wish to see you die for abba abdullah
[67:53]hussain then he came to his brother he said my master he
[68:00]never called him brother not once until the very end he said
[68:06]so he said i can't handle i've had enough i can't see
[68:27]children bringing water can water vessels that are empty i can no
[68:32]longer hear the cries of the women and children saying allata give
[68:45]me permission to go and fight what did imam al-hussein say to
[68:51]him he said he always called him brother my little brother abbas
[69:02]you are my standard bearer you are the leader of my army
[69:08]at that point there was no longer an army abbas was a
[69:14]one-man army when imam al-hussein was speaking to abbas everyone had already
[69:20]been killed not a single person remained the imam is telling him
[69:23]even though it's only you but if you go i will no
[69:28]longer have an army what's going to happen to the women and
[69:30]the children they're all looking up to you they're all thinking as
[69:37]long as uncle abbas is alive our father is safe as long
[69:40]as abbas is here he's going to bring us some water back
[69:46]to the camp if you go what will i do if you
[69:49]die my enemy will rejoice if you're killed my entire camp will
[69:55]be dismantled abel abbas insisted he said let me go i have
[70:00]to fight i want to defend you i want to protect you
[70:05]eventually imam al-hussein gave him permission but how did he give him
[70:09]permission he said in kanawa buddhist if you must go my brother
[70:27]then go and bring water back to the cab bring water to
[70:36]these thirsty children again a bus heads into the battlefield i do
[71:00]not fear death when it comes to me my soul is ransomed
[71:06]for the soul of rasulullah meaning foreign he introduces himself he reminds
[71:30]them that he is abbas the son of amir but he said
[71:37]i am not here to fight you i'm only here to bring
[71:41]water back to the car he heads towards the river euphrates four
[71:49]thousand archers intercept his way he he forces them all to flee
[71:59]from him as it is a bus we're talking about and they
[72:02]all run away from him he makes it to the water along
[72:06]with he stretches his hand into the stream some say if our
[72:16]boss quenches his thirst we will all be killed if our boss
[72:23]is rejuvenated he will destroy all of us they're all watching observing
[72:29]waiting to see what he does suddenly they see him throwing the
[72:37]water back into the stream walking out and saying jose you're about
[73:09]to drink from this cool water when hussain is still thirsty when
[73:17]rook he throws the water out of his hand he fills the
[73:30]canteen he fills the container with water and heads back into the
[73:35]direction of the camp of imam they say ensure he doesn't take
[73:52]the water back if hussein's thirst is quenched he will destroy us
[74:00]abbas heads back they all surround him they throw arrows and spears
[74:09]in his direction one man here approaches him and cuts off his
[74:29]right hand another one cuts off his left hand at this point
[74:38]abbas has one mission to take the water back to above here
[74:45]they start shooting arrows at him the arrows descend on him like
[74:53]rainfall he didn't know what to do some have said he tried
[75:47]to pull the arrow out of his eye he lowered his head
[75:54]to hold the arrow with his knees that's when the helmet fell
[76:02]down for the they ran away from him like a flock of
[76:50]goats running from a raging lion imam hussain would scream where do
[77:02]you flee when you've killed my brother until he reached his brother
[77:09]of boss came close to him he what does this last line
[77:36]mean the imam said my enemy has rejoiced now because they gathered
[77:42]around hosea clapping and [Music] [Applause] is you worship to spare me
[78:14]until my brother comes to me so i could believe farewell he
[78:19]said this is [Laughter] imam hussain sat next to him he tried
[78:39]to pull his his brother's head and put it in his lap
[78:44]they say our boss would pull his head and put it back
[78:50]on the dirt imam jose said why are you doing this he
[78:53]said because now you're with me and you put my head in
[78:59]your lap but who's going to hold your head when you're dying
[79:03]imam hussain left his brother on boss and went back to the
[79:10]camp they say that when he reached the camp everyone came out
[79:14]where is our boss where is my uncle where is my brother
[79:18]brother you know you all know was about to head into the
[79:27]battlefield all the women gathered around they all bid him farewell but
[79:31]no one bid abbas farewell do you know why why because everyone
[79:37]said abbas if he promised to bring back water he's definitely coming
[79:42]back no one expected our boss to go and never come back
[79:46]when imam hussain came back all alone [Applause] he cried while wiping
[80:03]his tears with his sleeve he simply went to the tent of
[80:07]at boss he removed the pillar and the tent fell to the
