[0:25]thank you for being with us today during this friday night nyc
[0:32]lecture this year unfortunately we didn't have the opportunity of having the
[0:42]majalis the nightly majalis of ashura in person at the iia was
[0:49]all conducted online except for the day of ashura but alhamdulillah that
[0:53]this in itself was a blessing the fact that we do have
[0:56]the opportunity to listen to the lectures online and hopefully this situation
[1:04]won't continue too much longer and we could be back inside the
[1:11]building without any health measures and that's inshallah after this entire pandemic
[1:19]comes to an end insha'allah so tonight inshallah i'll talk about the
[1:24]role of an imam zain al-abidin after ashura after karbala what was
[1:31]his role in continuing the message of imam hussain because of course
[1:35]the imam had a message the imam died for a cause and
[1:42]that message that he had that cause in which he revolted for
[1:47]did not stop in karbala it was continued and it was continued
[1:51]through the son of imam hussain imam abedin and of course his
[1:56]sister say the zainab you know what was tragic about what happened
[2:01]on the day of ashura wasn't just the fact that imam hussain
[2:06]was killed the imam's family members were all killed his companions even
[2:18]his little baby a six or five month old baby was killed
[2:23]right in his hands it wasn't just the fact that after the
[2:29]imam was killed they separated his body from his head and they
[2:33]placed his head on a spear it wasn't just because the body
[2:39]of imam hussain was trampled by the horses and it wasn't just
[2:42]because of what they did to zainab and to the woman of
[2:50]bayt and to the children they were terrorized they were beaten they
[2:52]were treated like prisoners of war it wasn't just because imam hussain
[2:57]was killed thirsty what makes the entire saga of ashura tragic was
[3:03]the fact that those individuals that came to kill imam hussain many
[3:10]of them came for what reason many of them they came to
[3:16]kill imam hussain for the sake of god to please god and
[3:23]this is something to us 1400 years later it makes no sense
[3:30]how can you go kill the grandson of rasulullah the imam the
[3:33]most pious person of your time you know such an individual you
[3:39]can't even frown at them let alone kill them let alone behead
[3:42]them even if you did it you're going to do it for
[3:47]worldly matters you're gonna do it for money for greed like we
[3:50]see today but can you imagine someone killing imam hussain for the
[3:56]sake of god they did it to please god they did it
[4:01]to seek nearness to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala so many of us
[4:06]we can't contemplate that we can't we can't understand how this happened
[4:09]that you kill the grandson of rasulullah for the sake of god
[4:15]to seek nearness to allah to please allah subhanahu wa ta'ala you
[4:19]know the enemies of imam hussain on the day of they started
[4:23]the day by doing what by listening to music drinking alcohol no
[4:28]they began their day by praying they prayed salat and if you
[4:34]look at them you say wow these people are such believers those
[4:37]30 000 that were there to kill imam hussain they began their
[4:44]day by praying salatu and in your salah in the tashahud what
[4:48]do you say you say i bear witness that there is no
[4:57]god but allah wa muhammadan i bear witness that muhammad is his
[5:04]messenger how can 30 000 individuals in their prayer when they are
[5:09]prostrating to god they bring the name of muhammad and they send
[5:14]god salutations and blessings upon him they love muhammad he's the messenger
[5:18]and then moments after they go and kill his grandson what type
[5:23]of logic is this this is what makes the entire tragedy of
[5:28]ashura so tragic is that those individuals many of them they killed
[5:34]imam hussain for the sake of god and imam zain al-abidin mentions
[5:45]the 30 000 individuals now yes some of them they did it
[5:52]for money like um he knew that what he was doing was
[5:55]wrong but he did it out of greed because he knew that
[5:59]there will be favors there will there will be money there's going
[6:04]to be land there's going to be more power given to him
[6:07]by the government yazid promised to make him the governor of an
[6:12]area called so he knew that he was doing the wrong thing
[6:18]but because of his greed he did it anyway but many of
[6:21]them they did it to please god thinking that by killing imam
[6:24]hussain they're doing the right thing and this just shows you how
[6:30]you know disoriented the muslims were they were in complete disarray complete
[6:36]mess look at their level of ignorance that they killed the grandson
[6:42]of their messenger to please the messenger this makes absolutely no sense
[6:46]now how did this happen this didn't happen overnight this happened my
[6:53]friends because of number one ignorance when you're ignorant everything can happen
[6:57]and number two because of propaganda there was a a very very
[7:06]strong propaganda warfare by beni umaya by muawiyah against to try to
[7:13]misinform people you know i i used to wonder how was muawiyah
[7:22]and yazid so successful in brainwashing people to convince people to kill
[7:27]imam hussain in the name of god until you know you see
[7:31]the propaganda channels of today you start to realize that it's not
[7:37]that hard back then there's no social media there's no cnn there's
[7:40]no new york times there's no you know internet there's no satellite
[7:45]channels there's no easy ways of communication how can you get you
[7:51]know something out it's not easy so beni omaya they took advantage
[7:59]of that and obviously they brainwashed people whatever the government wants you
[8:05]to know you know whatever they want you to believe you'll believe
[8:08]because you have no information of what's going on how do you
[8:12]know what's happened down the block right now everything's on facebook what
[8:16]time your neighbor sleeps wakes up what time they're having lunch the
[8:21]entire city is at your fingerprints just go on facebook and the
[8:25]other social media platforms you can see everybody what they're doing since
[8:30]they wake up until they sleep they post it all online everything
[8:33]is at your hands back then you didn't know anything so whatever
[8:40]the government told you this is what people believed today my friends
[8:44]with all the social media as i was saying you know i
[8:48]used to say how did they brainwash people so much until i
[8:50]saw what's happening now today with all of the information that is
[8:56]available all the easy ways of knowing the truth yet you find
[9:00]so many misinformed people don't you right just look at in this
[9:06]country how much ignorance is there in this country how much propaganda
[9:10]just look at the politics when you look at the politics it's
[9:15]as if the two parties are living in two different worlds two
[9:18]completely different worlds go to a a website that's you know democratic
[9:25]leaning or supporting and see how they portray what's going on in
[9:30]the country and then go to fox news for example it's like
[9:33]they're covering a different planet the propaganda is unbelievable the brainwashing is
[9:40]unbelievable how they can turn a crime into an act of honor
[9:46]they can turn a act of bravery into a crime it's so
[9:48]easy just turn on the media and see how they can change
[9:52]everything how they can play with the stories and brainwash people and
[9:57]that's why i always say in this country many people who don't
[10:02]understand islam it's either because of ignorance they don't have you know
[10:06]any knowledge about islam or it's because of propaganda because of all
[10:10]the misinformation against islam there was once a study that was conducted
[10:16]by care to see what americans know about islam 60 of americans
[10:23]based on the survey they had no clue what islam was they
[10:26]don't even know one thing about islam there are certain weird religions
[10:31]that i can ask you about i can ask you tell me
[10:36]two things about for example zoroastrianism zoroastrians can you tell me two
[10:41]points about zoroastrians most of us even muslims we don't know anything
[10:44]about them or sikhism most of them we don't know most of
[10:48]us we don't know anything about or some other more weird religions
[10:52]or sects in the muslim in the muslim nation if i ask
[10:57]you about the isma'ilis what do they believe most of you will
[10:59]tell me i don't know i don't even have one piece of
[11:04]information this is how most americans 60 are towards islam they don't
[11:06]know anything about this religion about the beliefs about the tenants and
[11:09]what's funny is 10 percent believe that muslims worship the moon they
[11:15]think that our god is the moon up in the sky now
[11:18]maybe one reason is because we're looking for the moon before the
[11:21]everybody's looking for their god this is what they thought probably so
[11:25]anyway the point is there's a lot of ignorance and there's also
[11:31]propaganda these channels and these you know media outlets and websites that
[11:35]spread false information against islam you know like fox news breitbart i
[11:40]don't know infowars whatever there's so many of them so if they
[11:46]are able to launch such successful propaganda campaigns in 2020 with all
[11:52]of the information and technology that exists you can imagine fourteen hundred
[11:59]years ago how easy it was to brainwash people and this is
[12:02]what many umayyad did they successfully brainwashed people into thinking imam hussain
[12:07]was not even a muslim why are we killing this man this
[12:12]man is not he's a catholic he's not even a muslim this
[12:14]man is a criminal and that's why we're killing him they did
[12:19]not know what imam was saying was many of them they did
[12:23]not know who imam zainul abedin was you know they say that
[12:26]imam ali when he was killed he was killed in kufa najaf
[12:34]imam ali was killed while he was doing sujud right so when
[12:39]word reached sham that imam ali was killed during suju do you
[12:45]know what the people of sham said what their reaction they said
[12:50]praise he got killed in sujud imagine i tell you this hollywood
[12:56]actor died while he was doing sujud so jude since when does
[13:03]this actor pray so this is the idea they had of imam
[13:07]ali that he doesn't even pray why because of the propaganda of
[13:11]bani umayya and imam al-abadi he realized that after karbala when they
[13:17]were taken from city to city to kufa and then to sham
[13:21]when he met yazid many of any city they used to go
[13:26]to people would come out and they would watch the caravan like
[13:29]a parade and they would gloat at them oh these are some
[13:34]kuffar that caused some trouble and we defeated them and brought them
[13:35]brought the woman and the children so in one of the cities
[13:40]imam zainul abedin saw an old man he started to gloat at
[13:46]the imam and say some negative things about the imam that alhamdulillah
[13:50]that god you know destroyed you kuffar he's telling him this so
[13:56]the imam told him oh old man have you read the quran
[14:00]he said yes you know the quran he told them have you
[14:05]read this verse where the prophet tells the muslims the prophet told
[14:17]the muslims the only thing i want from you after i die
[14:20]is to respect my family this is the quran i don't want
[14:25]any money from you compensation for everything i did i just want
[14:29]one thing from you love my family tell them do you know
[14:33]this verse the man was surprised that this knows some verses of
[14:37]the quran so the man said yes i know this verse he
[14:41]told him do you know who the quran are he told them
[14:44]who is my grandfather didn't he say love and respect my family
[14:59]i'm the family this man had no idea he said you are
[15:01]really the grandson of rasulullah you are him he said yes the
[15:06]man burst into tears he broke into tears started crying he said
[15:10]all this time i was i was brainwashed i had no idea
[15:15]and many stories you hear similar to this that they were completely
[15:19]brainwashed so imam zain al-abidi noticed that he had a mission and
[15:23]the mission was to teach people to expose yazid to tell people
[15:29]of the plot that this isn't what it seems it's not like
[15:32]yazid was the authorized khalifa and imam hussain was someone that you
[15:35]know just caused some trouble no this was an act of oppression
[15:40]against the prophet himself because this is the grandson of rasulullah who
[15:44]was the person that told that exposed it was and that's why
[15:55]when went to the city of sham they took him and zainab
[16:00]and everyone they took them in front of yazid yazid is sitting
[16:03]on his throne in the palace so yazid he starts to mock
[16:07]the imam he makes fun of him he insults him he gloats
[16:12]at him and then the imam makes a request he tells yazzie
[16:15]that allow me to go on the pulpit and say a few
[16:20]words yazid didn't want that because he knew that if the imam
[16:24]went on the member he's going to expose him but the people
[16:27]in the in the palace there was many people that were there
[16:30]to see what's happening what's going on who is this so they
[16:33]told us he's a young man what is he going to say
[16:36]you're a you know you're a king you're afraid of this young
[16:39]man a few words he can say yazid was reluctant but he
[16:44]said okay so imam zainul went and he gave a beautiful exposing
[16:50]yazid and one of the most important things that he did in
[16:54]his khutbah it was a very short sermon mainly what he did
[17:02]was he identified who he was he told them who he was
[17:07]he told them who his father was who his grandfather it's like
[17:09]imagine right now i come on the member i tell you i
[17:14]am the son of fulan my father is this my mother is
[17:15]this my grandfather is this salaam type of sermon is this right
[17:21]the imam didn't probably didn't even mention any verses of the quran
[17:24]he just mentioned his lineage who he was he basically introduced himself
[17:31]why did he do that he did that because people didn't know
[17:34]that this was the grandson of rasulullah if they knew they're not
[17:38]going to accept what yes he did and that's why when he
[17:42]started his sermon in sham he said these words he said whoever
[17:52]doesn't know who i am let me introduce myself let me tell
[17:56]you who i am and then he started to say these beautiful
[17:59]words he said he started to say i am the son of
[18:12]rasulullah and he started to describe the greatness of rasulullah you know
[18:17]in general it's not recommended it's not that good it doesn't look
[18:21]good when you go in front of people and you tell them
[18:23]my father is this my father is this my grandfather right you're
[18:28]boasting about your father grandfather you look kind of arrogant right imagine
[18:32]my father is wealthy and i come on the member and i
[18:36]tell you oh my father is a rich millionaire he owns this
[18:39]and that my people don't like that right oh look at this
[18:44]you know um pampered young young guy who's so arrogant thinking just
[18:50]because he's the son of fulan he can come and boast about
[18:56]it so this is not one of the traits of bait that
[18:58]they boast about their fathers why because they don't need to when
[19:01]you yourself when you're great you don't have to talk about your
[19:06]father and grandfather because your actions speak for you you don't need
[19:10]to even say that so the imams usually wouldn't say that he
[19:13]comes out i am the grandson of rasulullah and rasulullah is the
[19:18]man that was sent as a messenger he was the one that
[19:20]was sent to the heavens and the he was this he she
[19:25]that he went close to jabra he started to mention all of
[19:28]the virtues of rasulullah it's as if he's boasting this is me
[19:34]that's my grandfather right it doesn't look good but why did iman
[19:38]do that he wasn't boasting the imam was informing people guys you're
[19:44]sleeping rasulullah that when you're praying you send your blessings upon him
[19:49]he's my grandfather what's wrong with you why are you holding me
[19:52]as a prisoner of war so he wanted to inform them tell
[19:55]them who he was so he told them that my grandfather was
[19:58]rasulullah and how beautifully did he describe rasulullah and then he went
[20:04]to amir al-mu'min you know who my grandfather ali is if it
[20:17]wasn't for ali there would be no islam none of you would
[20:21]be muslims you would all be worshipping idols right now if it
[20:25]wasn't for my grandfather ali he was the hero of every battle
[20:29]and every battle the muslims had who was the hero who was
[20:32]the champion who was the man that rescued the muslims it was
[20:36]a one-man show every time it was my grandfather ali was the
[20:54]first muslim when everyone disbelieved in the prophet and they told them
[20:57]you're a liar you're a magician you're this you're that it was
[21:01]my grandfather ali that believed and supported and stayed with rasulullah this
[21:08]is my grandfather and then he says so he's telling them that
[21:23]look zainab is the daughter of ali and this is how you
[21:25]treat her who is ali let me remind you who ali is
[21:27]if you don't know who ali is ali is the man that
[21:31]saved islam he's the man that islam was built on his shoulders
[21:35]it was because of a sword that there was islam so he's
[21:38]trying to teach them he's trying to teach them his lineage because
[21:42]they had no idea who he was and then he said my
[21:52]grandmother is fatima she is of the woman of the universe the
[21:58]greatest woman of all time is my grandmother would it make sense
[22:03]to do all this oppression to me when my grandfather is rasulullah
[22:08]my other grandfather is imam ali my grandmother is fatima when yazid
[22:15]heard these words and he saw the people they were in shock
[22:18]they had no idea what they were hearing so when they were
[22:24]in shock and they were starting to get angry at yazid why
[22:28]did you do this to the family of rasulullah yazid he interrupted
[22:32]the sermon of imam jain abdul but how did he do that
[22:35]he did that by telling the mu'edin to do adan and i
[22:39]don't even think it was adan time it was just a random
[22:43]time all of a sudden imagine i'm speaking right now all of
[22:45]a sudden you hear randomly the adan playing to make you know
[22:49]to stop me from to quiet me to muzzle me so the
[22:52]imam all of a sudden he hears allahu akbar even the adhan
[22:56]the imam was able to use that against yazid because when said
[23:06]rasulullah imam looked at yazid and he told him oh yazid this
[23:11]muhammad that we hear so loudly in the speakers is he your
[23:14]grandfather or is he my grandfather if he's your grandfather if you
[23:20]claim that he's your grandfather then you're lying and maybe i don't
[23:24]know maybe the people of sham even thought that yazid was the
[23:25]son of rasulullah and that's why imam jin abedin told him if
[23:30]you claim that prophet muhammad is your grandfather then you're lying and
[23:34]if you accept and admit that he's my grandfather then why did
[23:39]you kill his grandson my father hussein why are you doing this
[23:44]to my aunt zainab yazid has no answer what is he going
[23:47]to say you can't you know you can't continue to lie to
[23:51]people once they see the truth right in front of their eyes
[23:54]and this is where yazid he noticed that it now it's out
[23:59]of his hands now he has nothing to say he's been destroyed
[24:03]by imam so throughout the days that could that followed and continued
[24:09]after ashura imam zainul abedin had a mission to expose yazid to
[24:12]tell the people of what happened if it wasn't for imam zainul
[24:17]abedin we wouldn't know about karbala trust me we want to know
[24:21]about what happened in the in karbala on the day of ashura
[24:27]it was and zainab that they told us generation after generation what
[24:31]happened because the imam he was there in karbala he was a
[24:35]you know he was a first account reporter he he saw and
[24:40]he was an eyewitness in karbala and he told the people of
[24:46]all the injustice that befell imam hussain and that's why you see
[24:50]imam zayn al-abadin he could never forget the saga of kerbela any
[24:56]any opportunity he had he would bring up the story of kerbela
[25:03]how would he bring it up by crying he sitting for example
[25:09]in his medalist wherever he sits to greet his guests all of
[25:13]a sudden he starts crying so people will ask what's wrong with
[25:17]you rasulallah why are you crying and he says oh i remembered
[25:20]my father hussain i remembered my brother ali al-aqbar and what happened
[25:25]to him i remembered my uncle abbas he wanted to keep the
[25:29]story of imam hussain fresh so that people don't forget it and
[25:34]that's why he would always remember the saga the story of kerbela
[25:41]he lived 40 years after imam hussain never did he forget any
[25:45]time he would they would bring water in front of him he
[25:49]would see the water he would cry shed tears and he would
[25:56]say salaam alaika peace and blessings upon you my dear father hussein
[26:01]you were deprived of drinking this water and then he would cry
[26:09]and curse the enemies of ahlul bait that prevented him from drinking
[26:13]the water and that's why brothers and sisters it is recommended anytime
[26:17]you drink water remember imam hussain remember hussain say assalamu alaikum the
[26:24]imams tell us curse the killers of imam hussain if you do
[26:30]that allah subhanahu ta'ala will give you a great amount of reward
[26:32]just by remembering the thirst of abba abdullah make it a habit
[26:37]every time that you drink water say a salaam hussain so imam
[26:43]zain al-abidin kept the story of kerbela fresh in that way by
[26:49]constantly remembering by constantly reminding others sometimes his own companions they would
[26:54]come in and complain and they tell him you're crying too much
[26:57]you know you've taken it too far isn't it time that you
[27:01]get over it how can you get over the story of kerbela
[27:04]we hear it now fourteen hundred years ago in our hearts break
[27:07]imagine imagine was there he witnessed everything in front of him he
[27:12]saw all those stories all those tragedies right in front of his
[27:15]eye how can you ever forget that the trauma that it causes
[27:20]so the imam never forgot the muslim of his father i ask
[27:30]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to grant us the ability and the tawfiq
[27:36]so that we can follow in the footsteps of imam zainul abedin
[27:39]so that we can always follow in the footsteps of bates i
[27:43]ask him to always guide us towards the truth show us the
[27:46]truth allow us to submit and accept the truth grant us and
[27:56]then the next life the shafa intercession of imam hussain alaihissalam and
[28:04]the holy household of rasulullah and we ask allah subhanahu ta'ala to
[28:08]hasten the reappearance of the 12th imam al-imam al-mahdi abdullah let us
[28:16]end by reciting surat al-fatiha for all of the muhammadin that have
[28:23]passed away after a love salawat for muhammad
