Scholars have disagreed on the topic of the Prophet's literacy for centuries. Here, we share several reasons as to why the Prophet Muhammad could indeed read.

[0:17]was the Prophet Mohammed illiterate because many times we are told that

[0:24]he was illiterate and that this is part of his miracle and

[0:26]that how could someone illiterate in the middle of the desert in

[0:29]the middle of Arabia 1400 years ago bring forward something of the

[0:36]Quran and in its magnitude and content and style now if you

[0:40]were to speak to any Arab Arabian poet even modern Arabian poets

[0:45]who have some knowledge of the poetry of jahiliya they would tell

[0:50]you of the miracle of the Quran in the language of the

[0:53]Quran many of us are not acquainted to it and it wouldn't

[0:57]need the Prophet being in literate or not literate but in any

[1:00]case if we are to consider that Prophet Muhammad had the keys

[1:06]to the unseen and we are to consider that this Quran revealed

[1:09]the word of Allah subhana WA Ta'ala and we were to consider

[1:14]that the Prophet Muhammad is the most perfect of all of God's

[1:18]creations and that even his inheritors is the Imams the a debate

[1:21]we believe that they can speak several different languages if we see

[1:28]that someone like maybe stole a man could speak to the animals

[1:31]and someone like maybe Moosa could speak to a lot directly for

[1:36]us to think that Prophet Muhammad could not read I would say

[1:45]as many scholars would also say that we are looking at a

[1:48]lacking attribute in the Prophet and so we are insinuating that he

[1:52]lacks some sort of perfection now this is not a debate between

[1:57]Sunnis and Shias because there are several Shia scholars who believe that

[2:01]the Prophet was illiterate and with all due respect to that opinion

[2:05]there are several other historians and scholars who believe that this is

[2:09]impossible now what we want to do is we will provide the

[2:14]evidence and the conclusion as to why Prophet Muhammad could not have

[2:19]been illiterate for at least his entire life first of all people

[2:23]go by the slogan and maybe on me and that praises are

[2:30]scattered throughout the sacred texts that the Prophet who is illiterate however

[2:34]if we look at what on me actually meant in that time

[2:40]the Jews were people who had a book and they were all

[2:42]over Arabia they were known as a lowly Khattab whereas the Arabs

[2:49]had no book and no prophet and so they were known as

[2:51]people who did not have a book they were not al-khattab and

[2:55]so the Jews called the Arabs of the time illumina nor I

[2:59]mean if you look at the doha in Sahih passage idea and

[3:05]you see how Imam Sajjad Ali Salaam refers to the Prophet l

[3:08]may be alone me and Karachi al tohe may Allah be he

[3:15]is mentioning different ethnicities the Arab from the tribe Koresh so only

[3:20]mentions it in the see up in the context of it being

[3:26]an ethnicity above anything else not necessarily meaning that he is illiterate

[3:29]or that all the Arabs were illiterate because the Arabs many of

[3:32]them could indeed read now if we look towards the narrations there

[3:38]are several narrations that point to the literacy of the Prophet Mohammed

[3:42]least of all in on the day of per day beer which

[3:46]will speak about Allah in a few chapters when the Prophet Muhammad

[3:49]himself rubs out his own name or just before he passes away

[3:52]and he tells his companions to give me something by which I

[3:58]may write so you may never go astray often me if he

[4:02]can't read how can he write if he can't read how would

[4:04]he know where his name is a robbery I'll himself likewise a

[4:09]Sulha law was known to have released a prisoner by the condition

[4:13]of him going and teaching ten people how to read and write

[4:16]how could he value something like literacy so much that he would

[4:22]release prisoners because of it through it yet he himself would not

[4:25]read or would not even exert any effort into learning how to

[4:27]read so we have several narrations alluding to this truth there is

[4:34]one narration in which Prophet Muhammad is sitting down by the sand

[4:38]and he is crying and he is reciting in the ends and

[4:41]now a little powder and some penguins come and say you're a

[4:45]swallow why are you crying why are you crying so profusely and

[4:48]the Prophet says I'm crying because of what my heart and my

[4:54]eyes are seeing right now and they say what is it seeing

[4:56]and so he brings a stick and he begins to write into

[5:03]the sand tenez edelman iike to a rope or feeha he is

[5:06]not be him in Quilliam he's talking here the ayah in surat

[5:13]al caudal in which the angels are descending and he's writing that

[5:17]down into the sand if he couldn't read how could he write

[5:22]in the sand and these are all separate narrations so when we

[5:25]look at the life of the Prophet and we want to say

[5:31]that he is illiterate the most one can say if he wants

[5:32]to believe that the Prophet was illiterate is that the Prophet was

[5:36]illiterate up until at least he received the revelation of the Quran

[5:45]because when Gibran L says o'clock how can the Prophet say I

[5:49]can't read either Allah subhana Allah has to make him read in

[5:53]that time so that it can be a fair and just order

[5:57]from Allah otherwise all of the power to Allah would be asking

[6:03]him to do something that he cannot do as if he was

[6:04]asking me to fly fly and I say I cannot fly and

[6:07]Allah orders me to fly of course Allah would never order me

[6:11]to fly because I can't fly unless Allah gives me the power

[6:14]to fly and I could fly so if Allah granted him the

[6:18]power to read at that moment that remains to be seen and

[6:21]it very well could be but it would be unjust for Russell

[6:26]a lot to be demanded to read when he could not even

[6:28]read unless Allah subhana Allah gave him that gift at that moment

[6:33]oh he could from the very beginning read anyway there's no problem

[6:37]in combining them but the most one could say is that he

[6:41]was illiterate up to the time over the revelation but even that

[6:46]may insinuate some knocks some weakness some lacking in his attributes that

[6:51]many would not accept
