[6:51]University of Michigan he traveled to K and began studying in the
[6:56]hza since 2015 and his ha howza studies are still continuing he's
[7:00]also a PhD candidate at the University of monster in Germany in
[7:04]the department of Islamic theology uh please help me welcome with a
[7:13]Muhammad Muhammad alhamdulillah [Music] respected brothers and sisters thank you may Allah
[8:13]subhana waala accept your your Deeds your commemoration of the tragedy of
[8:23]IM Hussein during these blessed and sacred nights of muharam and saf
[8:37]one of the things that we take from this tragedy this event
[8:45]that has occurred over a thousand years ago a person might ask
[8:51]what is the benefit of remembering and commemorating an event that had
[8:56]occurred over a thousand years ago remembering it every single year commemorating
[9:06]it holding sessions like this spending time and energy money and efforts
[9:14]in holding events and repeating things that are related to that event
[9:23]isn't it somewhat repetitive that every year we do this don't we
[9:27]have anything better to do is it this something we've already heard
[9:30]over and over and over again one of the answers which we
[9:40]can give to that is that the nature of humankind does not
[9:47]change most of the time the humans that existed over a thousand
[9:53]years ago exhibit very similar behaviors to humans who exist nowadays it's
[10:00]almost the same pattern we have a saying where we say that
[10:04]history repeats itself right events happen over and over again and they
[10:09]seem to be repetitive patterns humans compared to other creatures on this
[10:17]Earth seem to exhibit behaviors that are very destructive to themselves and
[10:26]to others for some reason now religion was revealed in order to
[10:31]present present solutions to this internal issue that human beings have and
[10:36]one of these ideas that religion comes up with or brings forth
[10:40]to the people is that Allah subhana wa tala has created different
[10:46]types of creatures one of the categories of those creatures is the
[10:52]animals the animals don't have an intellect they act merely from their
[10:58]instinct or their desire and for those who believe in Allah subhana
[11:03]wa ta'ala and the revelations we believe because we were told this
[11:09]that there are also angels that were created and the Angels were
[11:12]created purely with intellect they were not created with any type of
[11:17]passion or desire and then comes the human being the human being
[11:21]was endowed with both of these in one aspect we are animals
[11:24]we have desires we have passions we have instincts and the other
[11:31]hand we were endowed with an intellect too so part of us
[11:38]is Angelic in this way but the other part is animalistic now
[11:43]sometimes when you put these two things together it becomes either more
[11:49]destructive than an animal or more spiritual or pure than an angel
[11:57]when these two things are together and our Hadith indicate this a
[12:00]human being if he or she was to obey their passions and
[12:06]instincts then they would lower themselves beneath the animals the Quran describes
[12:11]those who go against Allah subhana wa tala and don't listen to
[12:18]him and transgress against him as people who are even more lower
[12:24]than animals why because the intellect allows the person to make right
[12:31]decisions but here we also have another issue this intellect which a
[12:36]person should use to make right decisions could also be used to
[12:40]do wrong decisions that same mind that is able to create something
[12:45]that's benefi beneficial to humanity is the same mind that is able
[12:49]to destroy Humanity as well you can invent a very beneficial thing
[12:56]you can make a device that would improve people's lives and at
[13:01]the same time you can invent an atomic bomb you can invent
[13:05]weapons that are destructive to humanity you're able to use this intellect
[13:11]to advance Sciences in people's lives to discover the scar the St
[13:16]the stars and the skies to be able to advance medicine to
[13:23]advance things that are related to engineering as well why to make
[13:27]the human's lives easier at the same time with that same intellect
[13:30]you're able to invent something like a gun or like a bomb
[13:37]or even something that destroys the nature that we have on this
[13:41]Earth so this same tool that we have been endowed with can
[13:47]go both ways it can either assist us as human beings if
[13:49]used in the right way or it can destroy us if it
[13:53]was used in the wrong way and this is something that repeats
[13:56]itself over and over and over again in history most of humanity
[14:03]tends to choose the animalistic side we go towards power we go
[14:11]towards wealth we go towards things that inflate our ego and once
[14:16]the ego becomes inflated you don't see anyone else worthy of anything
[14:21]anymore you start to fill up the whole room yourself you only
[14:24]see yourself you don't see yourself as making mistakes anymore you think
[14:31]you're the one who deserves to rule the Earth you're the one
[14:33]who deserves all the credit you're the one who deserves all the
[14:35]goodness in this life and once you start having this mentality and
[14:41]this attitude you start destroying those who are around you we look
[14:45]at you know Nations that have existed for example the Ottomans when
[14:49]they ruled towards the end there were four brothers and each brother
[14:55]had a certain segment of the Ottoman Empire but because of the
[15:00]greed that each one had they began killing each other a brother
[15:03]began to kill the other brother and the other ones too why
[15:06]because he wanted the whole empire for himself he didn't want to
[15:11]share it and the Ottoman Empire is you know it was a
[15:12]very expansive Empire it was very big if this was divided between
[15:19]the brothers and the cousins and the uncles and the aunts everybody
[15:23]will still have tens of thousands of acres of land that they
[15:27]can govern but once your ego is inflated there's no limit to
[15:31]what you want if the whole world is given to you you
[15:35]would say I want even more than that and to get that
[15:37]you're ready to destroy even your own family members even your own
[15:41]siblings for a matter of expanding your land or expanding your wealth
[15:46]or expending your power and authority and all of these are just
[15:50]imaginations that we have in our mind no matter how wealthy we
[15:53]become no matter what we own in reality we don't have true
[15:59]ownership over those things we don't really own what we think we
[16:05]own ownership is an idea that humans have invented in their minds
[16:08]we've all agreed with each other that you know if somebody buys
[16:12]something with this currency that we've invented then this belongs to that
[16:16]person but in reality we're just borrowing things we're just agreeing between
[16:21]each other there's nothing really that's ours because the moment that we
[16:26]die everything goes away so it's just a deception an illusion that
[16:32]we're living in however this illusion is so real in our minds
[16:35]that we treat it as if it's reality and Not Just an
[16:38]Illusion Fame is the same thing it's an illusion the more famous
[16:44]you become the more important you think you are you want to
[16:47]become a celebrity you want to become an influencer you want to
[16:51]become this you want to become that you want to become known
[16:53]but this is just an illusion there's are ideas that are in
[16:56]our minds and the moment we leave this world all of this
[17:02]goes away it doesn't have any intrinsic value the only value that
[17:05]remains in the Quran brought these pointers to wake us up from
[17:12]this that happiness lies in this internal balance of the self not
[17:16]by being known by other people not by owning things that's not
[17:19]what gives you value in your life what gives you value is
[17:23]if you have that internal balance and internal Faith inside of you
[17:28]if you have that nobody can take it away from you if
[17:32]you own a thousand palaces the kingdom next to you or the
[17:36]country next to you the government next you can decide the next
[17:39]day to come and occupy your palaces and take them away from
[17:42]you that shows us that it's not true ownership right if something
[17:47]can be taken from me then it's not an intrinsic part of
[17:50]me so what is it that I can have that cannot be
[17:55]taken away from me is that internal spiritual state that I have
[17:59]nobody can take it away if I decide to be happy and
[18:04]content with my life no matter what I have nobody can come
[18:07]inside of me you know they put you on the and take
[18:11]you to the hospital they open you up and they look for
[18:15]your happiness to take it away they can't do that they might
[18:19]try from the outside to whisper to you to play around with
[18:22]your mind they don't want you to live a happy life they
[18:26]start saying things to put you down but you can choose to
[18:31]listen to that or not this is why even the Shan on
[18:33]the day of judgment when Allah subhana wa tala you know he
[18:38]begins to be asked why did you do this why did you
[18:41]make the people do these bad things says I never made them
[18:45]do it they decided to do I just you know whispered around
[18:48]I was messing with their minds but they made the decision so
[18:53]that value of what I have inside of me nobody can take
[18:58]it away there's nothing that is able to take happiness away from
[19:01]me if I'm a happy person I can decide that for myself
[19:05]and if I have that emotion or I have that spiritual state
[19:08]of joy and content in my life then no one is able
[19:13]to take it away this is mine this is who I am
[19:17]this is my true ownership everything outside isn't really what I own
[19:23]and isn't really what gives me value in life I can own
[19:30]Gardens and palaces and cars and clothes and everything but I can
[19:34]still live in a very sad State and a very despair state
[19:38]right and we all witness this so this is a struggle that
[19:43]we humans have we go after things that are not really ours
[19:47]things that are not really valuable we give that the essential value
[19:53]we seek happiness and joy and value in life and that which
[19:57]cannot really give us value and we let go of things that
[20:03]are truly what gives us value this is what happened in the
[20:06]tragedy of kbal too right it happens these days and it happened
[20:09]1,300 years ago as well a lot of the people that were
[20:17]in the army ofad they were there for the money they were
[20:20]promised lands byad they were promised wealth they were promised status some
[20:26]people were told they were going to be given governmental position if
[20:29]they fought some people were promised to be given lands if you
[20:36]go Fus you have this much land if you go fight the
[20:38]IM you have this much money you have this much gold given
[20:42]to you it's the same thing that's happening nowadays in wars in
[20:47]other areas people are chasing those things so commemorating these events is
[20:51]commemorating the human tragedy which the epitome of it was in carala
[20:58]because you had not a regular person who was being fought you
[21:04]had an individual who represented the pure spiritual and perfect representation of
[21:09]humanity this person who if you were close to him you were
[21:15]the wealthiest of individuals on Earth isn't the IM in one saying
[21:22]he tells the people that whoever comes with us reaches that state
[21:29]of fat where his Spirit his soul his heart is open and
[21:34]it reaches that level of perfection and whoever leaves us and abandons
[21:39]us then he has lost everything so that struggle that the IM
[21:45]had it was the struggle the human struggle between that Perfection which
[21:54]we should seek and the Imam represented the most highest form after
[21:58]the prophet of course because he was the grandson of the prophet
[22:00]and the prophet expressed his Perfection by saying that Hussein is from
[22:05]me and I am from Hussein the prophet clearly indicated that inside
[22:10]this man is that prophetic Perfection not just is he from me
[22:18]but I am also from him so there we have this representation
[22:20]and on the other hand we have those representatives of the Pure
[22:25]Evil and that struggle continues and continues and continues until the day
[22:32]of judgment so commemorating these events is not something which we should
[22:36]tell ourselves that we shouldn't be doing or it's repetitive why do
[22:39]we keep talking about this it's because we keep doing the same
[22:41]thing over and over again as human beings we go through the
[22:46]same struggles the same problems every time we have a new generation
[22:49]that's born these humans are not made up of a different nature
[22:52]or different substance than the humans that came before them they carry
[22:56]the same qualities they carry the same characteristics yes the outside world
[23:02]might change you might have cars now that didn't exist back then
[23:05]now you have sky high buildings that didn't exist back then you
[23:09]have technology that didn't exist back then that changes but the nature
[23:16]of us doesn't change so remembering these events is to create that
[23:20]awakeness inside of us to remind us that even I as an
[23:25]individual who claims to be belonging to this religion of Islam belonging
[23:33]to this pure IM I come and commemorate even me I have
[23:36]the potential of becoming corrupted and destroyed this is what we have
[23:42]to keep in our minds it's a reminder for us those people
[23:44]that were in the tent of don't think they didn't know who
[23:50]Al Hussein was it wasn't too long after the prophets de there
[23:52]were people that lived at that time that were Companions of the
[23:55]prophet and they heard the Hadith from the prophet everybody knew who
[24:01]IM Hussein was everybody knew what kind of individual he was everybody
[24:04]knew that he was the master of the Youth of paradise and
[24:09]if they didn't know the IM on the day of reminded them
[24:11]of these things he told them he spoke to them he said
[24:17]amongst you are people if you don't know they can tell you
[24:19]that they heard the prophet say this about me and my brother
[24:22]that we are the masters of the Youth of paradise because sometimes
[24:25]we can we act like we forget right oh I've never heard
[24:27]that I've never you know we we lie to ourselves we deceive
[24:32]ourselves why because we don't want to take ourselves accountable we don't
[24:37]want to make that change because change is difficult in our lives
[24:40]right but if you continue like that you end up destroying yourself
[24:43]so the IM reminded these individuals that you are fighting against me
[24:49]and I represent this don't you have a change of heart the
[24:56]majority of the people I mean hardly any in there were some
[24:58]people that changed the from one side to the other Al for
[25:03]example is one individual that left the evil camp and went to
[25:06]the good camp he had a conscious he was able to say
[25:12]that I choose my good life and the afterlife over the evilness
[25:16]and the temporary life he made that decision it was the last
[25:20]moments before the battle which kind of gives us hope as well
[25:24]right this resonates in ourselves sometimes you think to yourself that you
[25:29]know I'm too immersed in bad things in my life I'm already
[25:33]drowning right and in one of the poems in Arabic a person
[25:39]says that I'm already drowning so why should I fear becoming wet
[25:44]I'm drowning already I might as well continue drowning right becoming wet
[25:47]isn't something I'm worried about anymore but that mentality is wrong even
[25:53]at the last moments you can always change your life it's always
[25:59]in your hands you know nowadays we have a lot of research
[26:02]that's coming out that's trying to tell us that humans don't have
[26:09]free will that everything we do all our emotions are driven by
[26:14]things that we are programmed by so we have certain cells we
[26:18]have certain you know genetics that we are you know that we
[26:23]have inherited certain environmental factors these dictate to us every single thing
[26:27]that we do why do you get mad well there's a genetic
[26:33]disposition right I'm I'm born this way some people are born and
[26:36]have the potential to become murderers they're not murderers by choice some
[26:42]people are born and they have the potential of becoming dictators this
[26:45]is not a matter of choice this is some research that's coming
[26:49]they're trying to push this idea right now that we don't really
[26:52]have the choice in our hands but the Islamic conception is no
[26:55]this is not right at the end of of the day you
[27:02]might be influenced by genetics you might be influenced by environmental factors
[27:06]yes they do influence you we don't say that there's no type
[27:09]of influence the way you raised by your parents influences you you
[27:13]know I speak to individuals and you know we all live this
[27:17]reality because we have parents in our lives right you know they
[27:19]say that I see that myself behaving in a certain way let's
[27:24]say with my spouse or with my children because that's how my
[27:29]parents were behaving at home there is that type of influence yes
[27:32]and Islam has not denied that that's why it emphasizes that if
[27:35]we behave in the house with our spouses with our children we
[27:41]should keep in mind that their future is affected by the way
[27:43]we behave with them that's why we have to perfect our Behavior
[27:46]with them you might insult your child and think you know nothing's
[27:50]going to happen to this kid but in reality that insult might
[27:52]remain in their mind until the end of their life every word
[27:57]you say to a child you have to be very careful how
[27:59]you say it everything you say to them because it affects their
[28:05]life islamically we accept this there are influences but at the end
[28:09]of the day whatever the human being does is coming from The
[28:14]Willpower you decide as a human being you make that final move
[28:21]and final decision that will which they call is something that is
[28:27]in our hands before making a decision I might be influenced I
[28:30]might go outside and I see a lot of billboards on the
[28:35]street and they're telling me to go buy a new phone right
[28:37]I remember when I was living in Iran and studying there you
[28:42]know all because of the sanctions and whatnot you don't have these
[28:46]advertisements for Samsung and you know apple and all these other other
[28:49]phone companies so you get to the airport and you don't see
[28:56]like phone advertisements you see like buy some yogurt or buy some
[29:00]you know whatever they make over there that they like a lot
[29:03]I know must is yogurt and farsy they love yogurt with um
[29:08]with salt and Nana sometimes mint you you find that kind of
[29:11]stuff now naturally I don't like to drink that so it never
[29:15]affected me as much as you can put a thousand Billboards I'm
[29:16]not buying that yogurt I don't like it so it doesn't it
[29:22]doesn't influence me but I realized by living there if I stayed
[29:25]there for a year I came back as soon as I got
[29:29]here T-Mobile advertisement I'm like oh my God I need a new
[29:31]phone I completely forgot I don't need a new phone right my
[29:36]phone was completely fine but as soon as I saw that billboard
[29:39]message it popped in my mind oh maybe my phone's old let
[29:43]me let me check it out let me see I need more
[29:44]RAM I need more you know more like a better camera a
[29:50]few more megapixels so that influence is there but deciding to buy
[29:55]a phone that's what I can decide yes sometimes the influen are
[29:58]very difficult to to fight off and that's what and and you
[30:04]know that's why Islam tells us to live in a certain environment
[30:06]to protect ourselves from certain influences because the more influences there are
[30:13]the more likely we're going to decide based on their influence the
[30:17]more media I have and this is you know this is why
[30:22]they have Billboards right this is why they have advertisements on TV
[30:24]now this is why they advertise on YouTube you know you think
[30:27]it's the 22nd video or a 5-second you know advertisement is not
[30:32]going to do anything to you but if it wasn't so effective
[30:34]you know who would put a 5sec or 10c advertisement you would
[30:40]think it's stupid right 10 seconds you want to convince me in
[30:42]10 seconds to buy this well if it didn't work they wouldn't
[30:46]be doing it there's a lot of research that shows that this
[30:49]5sec if it comes repetitively is going to eventually influence most individuals
[30:55]to do that thing and that's why you should TR try to
[30:59]protect yourself from these influences so there are influences that happen we
[31:03]are influenced by our environment we are influenced by our culture we
[31:07]are influenced by a lot of these things but we have to
[31:12]protect ourselves first of all if I feel like I'm someone who's
[31:15]being dragged into a bad position in my life I have to
[31:19]look what is it that's pushing me towards that is it my
[31:21]friends that I'm hanging out with the T the friends that I
[31:26]have this is why there's an emphasis that if you are to
[31:29]hang out with someone then choose the right people to hang out
[31:33]with why because your your friends influence you your friends could turn
[31:38]your life into a very destructive life they could push you towards
[31:41]doing drugs push you towards you know buying a fast car and
[31:44]start doing donuts in the street you know because that's a cool
[31:49]thing to do your friends can influence you to do that they
[31:52]can influence you to do many evil things so how do you
[31:55]protect yourself from that you remove the influencers and you know it's
[31:59]it's ironic that the people online now they're called influencers right they're
[32:04]influencing us what are they influencing us with well this this idea
[32:08]of of turning us into Commodities is basically what it is is
[32:13]turning us into these individuals who just want to open up accounts
[32:18]and become famous and become influencers you ask a person you know
[32:21]what's your job he I'm a I'm an influencer or you ask
[32:24]her and she says I'm an influencer what are you influencing are
[32:27]you telling people to become you know better individuals are you teaching
[32:32]Humanity how to improve itself most of the time no you do
[32:39]things that go towards those passions and desires that humans have because
[32:43]that's the easiest thing that you can have you know get a
[32:44]like for or get a share is basically playing around with emotions
[32:48]and feelings and and desires so most of these influencers are not
[32:54]good influencers some of them might have a good intention they might
[32:56]try to advice they might advise they might try to do good
[32:59]things but the majority know so the fact that it's called an
[33:03]influencer should make us think that you know maybe there's something I
[33:08]have to be careful about over here I don't want to be
[33:10]influenced by the by the bad thing so these individuals that lived
[33:16]in imam's time were also influenced as well there was a lot
[33:19]of propaganda that was used by the umay against the im a
[33:22]lot of uh propaganda and a lot of luring using wealth like
[33:28]now nowadays you know you get advertisements about how to become a
[33:32]rich person or how to make a million dollars in two months
[33:36]or you know you get those really like ridiculous advertisements like if
[33:40]you can make $2 million in a month or a million dollar
[33:42]in a month I mean everybody would be a millionaire you know
[33:45]but a lot of people they get you know they get dragged
[33:48]by that they they click on the link right that's debate there
[33:50]they click on it they might not believe it but they say
[33:55]you know maybe maybe there's there's a 1% chance I don't want
