[5:09]during the pandemic I received a phone call it was a woman

[5:26]crying behind the phone she could not hold back her tears and

[5:38]she kept repeatedly asking me one question are you willing to speak

[5:49]at my daughter's eulogy are you willing to attend my daughter's obituary

[5:58]say it she's dead she was only 16 years old I lost

[6:09]my daughter I immediately said yes without hesitation I accept it she

[6:25]went on to explain to me that she took her life my

[6:32]daughter took her life she's no longer with us we agreed on

[6:45]a date and time I was given a zoom link and we

[6:51]ended the conversation when we finish the conversation I looked at the

[6:59]WhatsApp picture the display picture and it was a picture of a

[7:09]young innocent girl smiling she had put her daughter's picture as her

[7:17]display picture on WhatsApp I asked myself how could this be this

[7:28]is so tragic what will I say tomorrow how will they cope

[7:39]with this pain the next day using the zoom link I attended

[7:54]this event which was held online and prior to my address her

[8:01]father spoke he spoke of his beautiful memories with his daughter how

[8:14]much he loved her how much he's going to miss her then

[8:25]he took out a note a small note he showed it to

[8:30]everybody the snow was extremely heartbreaking it was extremely tragic the note

[8:48]was very small one sentence one line it read tell my story

[8:58]so what was her story her story was that she fell in

[9:09]love with her so-called soul mate in high school and he left

[9:15]her she took her life it sounds very simple but he went

[9:28]on to explain this is not the full story there is much

[9:33]more to it there is much more to what led to my

[9:42]daughter taking her life and that is the story of millions millions

[9:50]of teenagers that have taken their lives I'm sure every single one

[9:58]of you sitting here has a story about a teenager who decided

[10:05]we're going to run away from life we're going to end our

[10:11]lives a story of Pain a story of trauma a story of

[10:17]neglect story of agony a story of abuse a story of confusion

[10:27]story of weakness and a story of a sad departure from this

[10:39]world and tonight my dear brothers and sisters is dedicated to a

[10:53]hero a hero from the heroic story of Ashura a man who

[11:06]could not resist the cries of the children the children who were

[11:15]thirsty they were crying he could not sit back he could not

[11:21]just watch them suffer he could not hear the cries of the

[11:26]innocent children so he went to fetch them water to quench their

[11:34]thirst and when he was not successful and he fell on the

[11:42]Sands of karbala Imam al-hussein came to him he said to him

[11:53]allow me to take you back to the tents you're my brother

[12:01]said no please do not take me back because I am ashamed

[12:12]of the kids what will I tell them that your uncle failed

[12:20]you your uncle could not bring you water how can we hear

[12:27]the story of abbasem foreign to hear the cries of our own

[12:42]flesh and blood our own children our own teenagers who are in

[12:52]crisis who are contemplating suicide and I tell you at the leadership

[13:07]we have to change our strategy we have to change our vision

[13:17]why because if you look at rasulullah his greatest of companions the

[13:27]superstars surrounding rasulullah we're all teenagers young men go read the biography

[13:41]of the majority of the sahaba of rasulullah especially the loyal ones

[13:46]the ones that stuck with them and Imam Hassan and some of

[13:56]them lived in the time of Imam Al Hussain they were all

[14:03]young men look at the superheroes of the battlefield of karbala the

[14:09]vast majority of them the vast majority of them were young men

[14:17]look at the companions the founder of our school of thought the

[14:23]founder of our motherhab they were all mostly young men was young

[14:30]zorara was young Muhammad Muslim was a young man they were all

[14:34]young men so how was it that Islam attracted them now Islam

[14:40]was attractive to them they were motivated resilient infatuated with the love

[14:54]of Allah and the Imam of their time and why is it

[15:03]that we're not as successful today with the teenagers the answer is

[15:08]it's because we're not following the same footsteps of rasulullah we're not

[15:15]following the same footsteps of Imam al-hussein I know in many communities

[15:25]and I can say this here because this is not the case

[15:32]here in many communities around the world and especially in America many

[15:36]people who are listening to me today the priorities not given to

[15:46]the youth and the centers and the magellas and selecting speakers and

[15:51]selecting a capable leadership the priority is not given to the youth

[15:56]it's given to the elders the ones that have more money and

[16:04]that is why we suffer today and those individuals are the future

[16:15]of Islam Islam depends on them they are the future of our

[16:24]communities and that is why tonight I'm going to lend my voice

[16:35]to them I'm going to lend my voice to those who are

[16:42]seen but not heard to those suffering whether it's at home or

[16:53]within their communities and in the very beginning of my address [Music]

[16:59]before I engage in this topic I want to say this my

[17:07]dear friends our beloved teenagers you must know that we love you

[17:23]your father loves you your mother loves you your grandparents love you

[17:30]your family love you your community loves you and yes I understand

[17:40]your pain I understand your pain you're trying to fit in you're

[17:48]trying to find your identity you're trying to find acceptance you're trying

[17:58]to fight temptation your body is going through all sorts of changes

[18:07]there could be confusion but you should not be confused about one

[18:14]thing please take this from me you should not be confused about

[18:23]your father and your mother loving you and more importantly you should

[18:29]not be confused about Allah loving you Allah loves you you're not

[18:34]alone Allah is with you and I have heard that's a lot

[18:56]of teenagers doubt the love of their parents for them nobody loves

[19:05]me my parents don't love me my dad doesn't love me my

[19:11]mom doesn't love me nobody understands me and I tell you we

[19:20]all we all every single one of us deserves to be loved

[19:23]every single one of us deserves to love every single one of

[19:31]us deserves happiness but I want to tell you this my friends

[19:48]the very first step to your happiness does not start with your

[19:59]mom and it does not start with your dad and it does

[20:01]not start with your high school teacher and it does not start

[20:08]with your crush it starts with yourself you have to shake up

[20:15]the negativity you have to be strong you have to want to

[20:26]stop being confused you have to make certain decisions in your life

[20:34]which will make you happy Do not sit there and tell yourself

[20:44]every single day that nobody loves me nobody understands me nobody cares

[20:50]for me I feel neglected I feel abused yes sometimes people make

[21:02]mistakes maybe even your parents make mistakes but that is the process

[21:08]they are learning to be parents and guess what they're not going

[21:14]to learn with the neighbor's kids they're going to learn with you

[21:18]that's a process they're also learning they're not infallible so you also

[21:29]have to help them and give them a chance and I want

[21:36]to examine this topic tonight an extremely important topic a dear topic

[21:41]to all of us after your three louds Muhammad [Applause] [Applause] first

[22:06]and foremost why do teenagers think about love so much yes one

[22:14]reason could be the hormones one reason could be the biological change

[22:23]that they're going through one reason could be that they're lacking love

[22:29]at home or they feel that they're lacking love at home but

[22:34]I want to say this I believe that's one of the greatest

[22:44]reasons if not the biggest and the greatest of reasons is television

[22:49]is what we feed ourselves the movies that we watch and we

[22:56]don't think of this but you tell me find me any movie

[23:02]any movie any cartoon that does not contain a love story even

[23:09]children cartoons five years old 10 years old they're sitting there watching

[23:12]it over and over again it's got to have a love story

[23:16]and this affects people how does it feel to be loved I

[23:19]want to feel loved I also want to love and another reason

[23:29]is because they feel like nobody understands them except this one person

[23:38]so when they engage with this person and there's some sort of

[23:46]understanding then communicates with each other freely it develops a Feeling has

[23:52]given us the ability to love and to want to be loved

[23:57]so those feelings develop and then when those feelings develop what happens

[24:04]you plan your entire life and according to according to you know

[24:13]the to this person suddenly the hairstyle changes why because this is

[24:21]what she likes this is what he likes the way we act

[24:26]the way we we behave the way we think the way we

[24:31]attend school sleepless nights and you know you don't want to eat

[24:46]you don't want to do anything and sometimes it gets very tough

[24:52]on certain people another reason is because culturally here in America and

[25:00]I really believe in this is that success is associated with not

[25:11]being what single if you're in high school and you're single you're

[25:21]not a cool kid you're not somebody that people want to hang

[25:26]out with and it's the pressure every single day at school and

[25:38]wherever they go now what happens what happens if you love someone

[25:51]or you think you love someone or you have a crush on

[25:58]someone and that person doesn't love you back don't tell me it

[26:06]hasn't happened it's just a matter of time so people feel devastated

[26:13]because the only thing they see in life is this person my

[26:17]happiness is with this person and suddenly you find teenagers looking up

[26:21]you know what is a soul mate is this person my soul

[26:25]mate and they think that you know I'm going to spend my

[26:29]the rest of my life the rest of my days with this

[26:30]person and of course that's not the case but they don't know

[26:35]that at that period at that phase they're going through right so

[26:39]when they receive rejection when they feel rejected this person doesn't love

[26:44]me she doesn't love me he doesn't love me now the entire

[26:49]world is gloomy and I give up on life because this is

[26:53]the most important thing in my life if I can't have him

[26:57]why should I study why should I even do anything life has

[27:01]now become meaningless and I tell you the best way to overcome

[27:10]this the most powerful way to overcome this is to work on

[27:16]yourself invest on yourself don't invest in others because those are your

[27:22]golden moments those years are your golden days you're free you have

[27:32]no responsibilities you got no bills to pay you don't have to

[27:36]have a job you don't have to do much except study and

[27:41]focus on yourself don't invest your entire life your energy your joy

[27:50]your pain and someone else especially if they don't care and what

[27:56]do you do then you make a comeback you know I read

[28:03]in the biography of one of the most iconic athletes that this

[28:11]guy nobody wanted to be with him when he was in high

[28:16]school and whatever he didn't get that attention from the ladies but

[28:21]guess what five years later there wasn't a single well I'm just

[28:29]saying this in a an exaggerating manner no there wasn't nobody that

[28:34]didn't want to be with him you know make a comeback work

[28:42]on yourself invest in yourself and that is how you deal with

[28:53]haters in every aspect of your life I'll give you a solution

[28:56]for haters make a comeback work on yourself today the best of

[29:04]authors the most successful businessman and woman presidents Prime Ministers revolutionaries people

[29:14]with an impact are the ones who were rejected there were haters

[29:23]and the haters motivated them even more why because I have something

[29:26]now I need to prove myself I need to make a comeback

[29:30]keep that as the most important lesson in your life number three

[29:39]what is courage a lot of people when we're teenagers we confuse

[29:46]what courage is we think courage is to face three people for

[29:56]example the football field after school and we're not afraid to get

[30:02]into a punch-up with them that's courage or some people nowaday think

[30:10]that courage is if I go and I leave a mean comment

[30:11]under somebody's post no you're ugly I hate your shoes your hair

[30:24]looks awful nobody loves you nobody cares we think this is courage

[30:29]why because I had the courage to do this I had the

[30:35]courage to write this or to be the Troublemaker at school you

[30:40]know I don't mind detention I don't mind being expelled I'm not

[30:45]afraid of my parents you afraid of your parents what kind of

[30:50]guy are you you're afraid of your dad you're listening to your

[30:54]dad man I heard somebody say this a teenager said was speaking

[31:01]to another teenager and he was saying man you're scared of your

[31:05]dad that's so 1990s I was thinking of this guy so when

[31:11]I was a teenager I felt really old you know what real

[31:30]courage is real courage is to be able to stand after you

[31:41]fall takes a lot of Courage you know what real courage is

[31:49]is to keep trying though you know that maybe I'm still gonna

[31:54]fail maybe it's gonna take another 10 tries 12 20 tries 30

[31:58]tries maybe it's going to take an entire year but every time

[32:02]I fail I'm going to stand up again that is courage send

[32:10]those Brothers here so I can see them in front of me

[32:21]real courage already waiting real courage is to feel that you're alone

[32:30]yes you feel you're alone but you don't give up but real

[32:39]courage honestly real courage is to look at this huge mountain of

[32:46]problems and attack it it's not you know real courage as you

[32:54]go up to this girl and uh I was going to tell

[32:59]you that I I really like you and uh and here's my

[33:03]phone number and I feel that unfortunately today courage is also something

[33:18]that is misunderstood why because this is not what media and television

[33:25]and movies show us they talk about courage they talk about a

[33:30]guy killing another guy or attacking him or another guy trying to

[33:34]win over so many girls and supposedly he's a hero and he's

[33:38]courageous but I tell you real real courage was displayed by Imam

[33:46]al-hussein and you are at the school of Imam al-hussein when a

[33:53]man stands and he sees 25 000 people in front of him

[33:59]and he does not run away this is a problem that I

[34:06]need to face I need to rise to the occasion I'm not

[34:09]going to be fearful real courage was displayed by salaam you know

[34:23]when khandak not when he slept in the battle of the the

[34:32]bed of rasulullah of course those were all courageous Acts but real

[34:38]courage was remained silent because that's what rasulullah told him to do

[34:46]radhe all the Muslims come and give allegiance to him he's the

[34:57]first Muslim he's the defender of Islam and rasulullah told him and

[35:03]I spoke of this last year remember after me there will be

[35:15]chaos there will be disloyalty you will not be able to sit

[35:20]on the chair of what should I do ya rasulullah you must

[35:27]remain patient sometimes it takes a lot of Courage not to say

[35:37]anything to remain patient you are at the school foreign who are

[35:53]not afraid of poverty you've all heard and read the stories of

[36:04]Imam al-hassan tens of occasions people come and ask him we heard

[36:17]you are the most generous man in Medina and we are here

[36:21]to ask of your generosity and I'm Hassan gives them all that

[36:27]which is in his home everything sometimes it was five Dinars and

[36:32]sometimes it was 500 dinars takes a lot of Courage people who

[36:42]came and insulted Imam al-bakar and one tradition a man not only

[36:48]insulted him and he called him bakara you all know the story

[36:54]as a cow say Imam al-bakar says You seem hungry you seem

[37:06]like you're a visitor here seemed like you don't have a home

[37:10]can I offer you some food can I offer you my home

[37:14]can I help you in any way it takes a lot of

[37:17]Courage brothers and sisters to be attacked keep a smile control your

[37:27]anger and today if you feel depressed you feel neglected you feel

[37:36]there is trauma in your life hold on stand tall do not

[37:41]give up that is a real courage another very important point that

[37:53]I want to talk to my respected friends my beloved friends the

[38:00]teenagers talking to your parents you should go to your parents why

[38:09]because we don't know when is the best time to talk to

[38:15]you your parents they don't know they may choose a time where

[38:19]it's not the best of time right and you get upset why

[38:23]are you lecturing me every day I don't want to hear about

[38:28]this and if they initiate a conversation they'll have something to say

[38:34]right but why don't we do things differently from now on why

[38:37]don't you initiate the conversation because then they'll have to listen because

[38:40]you go to your dad and you say listen Dad I need

[38:43]an hour I want to speak with you so he now knows

[38:48]he has to listen and it's not going to be him speaking

[38:51]and if you're done speaking to your parents and you don't need

[38:57]advice to say I'm just here to tell you how I feel

[39:00]you don't need to tell me anything now I'm gonna leave and

[39:05]get up and leave but talk to your parents and you should

[39:11]be the one that initiates this gesture in this conversation and feel

[39:18]free to ask Dad Mom older brother I don't want to do

[39:24]this at home I want to go on a walk take me

[39:31]somewhere take me over for dinner I guarantee your parents will be

[39:36]delighted they will be happy and if you are a parent and

[39:45]your children come to you telling you that they want to speak

[39:52]with you I said this yesterday love equals time you must make

[39:55]time one thing that this man was saying and the obituary was

[40:00]that I was going through financial crisis I was losing my business

[40:06]I was going bankrupt so my daughter came to me a few

[40:12]times saying Dad I need to speak with you and I told

[40:14]her please give me some time I'm in a crisis I cannot

[40:19]he was breaking down himself he was explaining to us how he

[40:22]was even contemplating suicide but he says there is nothing more that

[40:31]I regret than not making time for her the fifth point it's

[40:42]also very important you're not alone what do I mean you're not

[40:51]alone there's a lot of teenagers going through the same thing that's

[40:54]not what I meant it is true but that's not what I

[41:00]meant it means that guess what your parents went through the same

[41:03]thing they might not admit it to you but your parents also

[41:09]every single person in those years had ups and downs one through

[41:18]sadness depression fell in love had a crush contemplated suicide all those

[41:22]things are there in fact it is inseparable from being a teenager

[41:29]so don't think oh my dad won't understand me my mom won't

[41:33]understand me they'll understand you believe me they'll understand you and more

[41:39]importantly we as parents must remind one day we were their age

[41:46]and we were struggling the same way so we must be more

[41:51]understanding and that does not mean and I have to re-emphasize that

[41:54]does not mean we do not discipline our children we neglect our

[42:03]children we allow the school to discipline them in school there is

[42:07]no disciplining in fact in some schools there is barely education now

[42:22]talking about moral values at school let's be real school is not

[42:30]going to teach your kids moral values it's not going to teach

[42:32]them ethics in fact forget moral values and ethics you're it's not

[42:37]even going to teach them how to take care of their finances

[42:41]if you have a hundred dollars to a hundred dollars five hundred

[42:46]dollars today how should you spend it how should you invest it

[42:49]does it teach them look if you have a thousand dollars you

[42:53]could go and start an online business this is how you run

[42:55]your business this is how you grow your money it's not going

[43:02]to teach them that in fact if anything our kids are being

[43:04]taught how to spend money in a very meaningless way sixth point

[43:16]we're going through those very quickly I know many of the Muslim

[43:24]youth teenagers are struggling for Acceptance in this country an identity crisis

[43:29]a few days ago somebody sent me a report that Muslim youth

[43:37]Muslim teenagers are four times more likely to feel lonely at school

[43:44]within their peers amongst their peers than other kids so we understand

[43:55]you're going through a crisis to find yourself to find your identity

[43:58]to fit in but I want to tell you one thing brothers

[44:04]sisters especially you my beloved community of teenagers Wherever You Are prior

[44:16]to social media I know you're thinking oh he's talking about social

[44:19]media again but just give me a second prior to social media

[44:25]not everybody was willing to do drugs right there's a lot of

[44:30]people that said no to drugs hey I'm not going to do

[44:34]drugs I know drugs are harmless for me I'm not going to

[44:37]jeopardize my life I know better not to do drugs but today

[44:41]every single person is saying yes to a New Drug and that

[44:47]is social media do not fall into the Trap of those who

[44:51]are trying to become billionaires off your life off your happiness they're

[45:02]becoming billionaires off your mental health anxiety and depression and suicide rates

[45:13]are skyrocketing why have you thought about it it's because of the

[45:25]social media because I care I post a picture and I keep

[45:31]asking by the way this is not my those are not my

[45:35]words go and look up the hearing that Mark Zuckerberg attended in

[45:43]the Senate he confessed to his crimes he said we hired individuals

[45:53]from Vegas addictive engineers and we gave him we came we gave

[46:00]them top dollar come create something that is addictive just like drugs

[46:03]worse than drugs worse than cocaine worse than heroin worse than opioid

[46:11]is that social media that you carry with yourself those are not

[46:18]my words you post a picture how many likes how many comments

[46:25]if you don't get enough likes or enough and of course there's

[46:28]not there's no such thing as enough because you're competing against other

[46:32]kids who by the way happen to become popular because of the

[46:38]algorithm because if there are no kids who are becoming popular you're

[46:40]not going to try harder so they'll play around with the algorithm

[46:44]they'll Shadow some people they'll boost other people so that this guy

[46:49]is going to be devastated with you know 15 followers and his

[46:54]friend is going to have 15 million and you're thinking look I'm

[46:59]doing the same thing I'm posting the same pictures I'm trying just

[47:06]as hard how come she has 15 million followers and I only

[47:11]have 50.

[47:17]it's reality and you're getting there getting depressed fighting for acceptance acting

[47:29]in ways that you know you know you know are not compatible

[47:35]with human value why just because I want to get more likes

[47:43]how can nobody left me a comment and you all know about

[47:50]this you all know about the depression and anxiety associated with social

[47:56]media now it's a drug it's a drug in every home in

[48:06]every pocket do yourself a favor do yourself a favor cut down

[48:17]social media wallahi cut it down for a month and you will

[48:24]see you'll be a much happier person much healthier person and I

[48:42]said we all need love in our life this is how Allah

[48:47]created us there is nothing shameful about love I'm not here to

[48:54]shame people I'm not here to put you down but I'll tell

[49:01]you there is one love that is Meaningful extremely meaningful extremely satisfying

[49:10]that's one true love it's a love that will never disappoint you

[49:23]and that is the love for Allah your creator the Empire of

[49:32]Allah is not this universe it's not this galaxy the Empire of

[49:39]Allah has your heart Allah says the heavens will not occupy me

[49:48]the Earth will not occupy me later the space this is the

[50:01]sanctuary of Allah this is the Empire of Allah and Allah says

[50:07]welcome mean to your heart foreign you'll feel content you will feel

[50:28]happy even though things may look so terrible like how it looked

[50:32]for say the zainab I explained this a few nights ago how

[50:35]was it that she turns her out and says I saw nothing

[50:42]but Beauty how is it that Imam al-hussein was content with all

[50:50]the calamities that befell onto him it's because this heart is content

[50:57]This Heart has embraced Allah and while your friends may give up

[51:05]on you while your family may give up on you while even

[51:10]sometimes your parents may give up on you but Allah will never

[51:15]give up on you Allah's door will always be opened and if

[51:19]you don't have friends guess what who's gonna be the best of

[51:22]friends Allah you read in Josh oh the Beloved of those who

[51:34]have no beloveds Allah and the companion of those who have no

[51:40]companions he's always there to listen to you to hear you create

[51:51]this relationship with Allah had a young age brothers and sisters speak

[51:57]to Allah I said this a few nights ago speak to Allah

[52:03]however and whenever there are no prerequisites go to him speak with

[52:08]him instead of sitting there feeling so miserable speak to Allah few

[52:17]sentences and see how you feel try this when you feel upset

[52:25]when you feel no one understands you when you feel neglected when

[52:29]you feel trauma when you feel depressed God forbid if you're thinking

[52:34]of suicide take a moment speak to Allah a person comes to

[52:46]Musa Moses was going to Mount Sinai with this I'll conclude I'll

[52:53]leave you with this most inspirational story he was going to Mount

[52:58]Sinai so he passed a man who was sitting he said Moses

[53:00]are you going to Mount Sinai to meet with God he says

[53:04]yes indeed I am he says I have a message for him

[53:06]can you take this message because yeah sure what's the message he

[53:09]said tell him I hate him please so Musa said okay sure

[53:17]but obviously he wasn't going to deliver that message so he goes

[53:21]to Mount Sinai and he's meant to meet with Allah for 30

[53:27]days then Allah said we added another 10 days why because the

[53:31]the next 10 days were were a test for his people they

[53:35]expected him after 30 days he returned after 40 days so within

[53:40]those 10 days there was so much that happened what happened to

[53:46]Musa he ran away he's not coming back he this that so

[53:51]there was a lot of chaos within his community every day Musa

[53:54]Allah would say Musa is there something you want to tell me

[53:57]is there a message that you have to deliver for me and

[54:01]Musa would say no Ya Allah there is nothing really to discuss

[54:07]the last moments Allah said Musa are you sure you're not forgetting

[54:14]a message said God you know there is a message but I

[54:18]I'm embarrassed and I don't want you to be upset at this

[54:21]guy who sent this message Allah says to Moses he said was

[54:30]the message for you or was it for me he said no

[54:35]no it was for you he says that deliver the message so

[54:39]Musa says this guy he says he hates you God responds go

[54:45]and tell him I don't hate him I love him I created

[54:52]him I am responsible for him can I say this can I

[55:07]say even if you're upset with God tell him tell him Allah

[55:17]I feel that you don't hear me I feel that you don't
