[0:06][Music] muhammad in our previous lectures i mentioned that allah says in
[0:41]the holy quran i have ordained fasting so that you achieve taqwa
[0:45]and we define taqwa as being an ability that with it you
[0:51]can stay away from haram taqwa we said is protection from haram
[0:55]protection from sins it's an ability that you can resist the dunya
[1:00]you can resist the temptations of the dunya now how does fasting
[1:08]lead to taqwa you see there are two factors there are two
[1:13]virtues that fasting develops and these two factors they help us in
[1:18]achieving taqwa the first factor is willpower if you want to have
[1:26]taqwa if you want to be someone that is a muttaqi someone
[1:29]that has protection from haram that can easily resist the dunya you
[1:34]need to have willpower strong willpower look at the muttering of this
[1:39]life that you know now and look out throughout history there is
[1:43]one common denominator between all of the individuals that have taqwa and
[1:47]that is they have strong willpower when you have strong willpower you
[1:52]can control yourself you can control yourself when you are tempted because
[1:56]if you think about it there are two times usually when we
[2:03]sin we sin for two reasons number one when we are angered
[2:05]how many times you say bad words you hit someone you say
[2:10]something that you don't want to many of the crimes that are
[2:13]committed many of the sins that are committed are because of anger
[2:16]and number two because of desires think about it why do a
[2:20]human being sin it's either because of desire or it's because of
[2:24]anger and in order to confront both of them you need strong
[2:27]willpower number one let's begin with anger you see you in order
[2:34]to control your anger when you are enraged sometimes you're filled with
[2:39]anger in order to control and manage that anger you need massive
[2:42]willpower and that's why there's a hadith where the imam's narrates that
[2:49]one day iblis the shaytan spoke to prophet noor and he told
[2:53]nur remember me three times basically the shaytan is saying there are
[3:00]certain times when you the human being you are vulnerable to the
[3:04]shaitan this is when he strikes this is when he ambushes you
[3:06]the shaytan isn't just 24 hours a day no he's planning he's
[3:09]waiting for the right times so he's giving some of the secrets
[3:14]to subhanallah he tells him one of those times if remember me
[3:19]remember that the shaytan is going to come and the shaytan will
[3:24]try to misguide you this is opportunity when you are angry when
[3:28]we are angry the shaitan sees a beautiful opening a beautiful opportunity
[3:32]for him to misguide me why because when we are angered brothers
[3:37]and sisters sometimes we become crazy sometimes we go mad have you
[3:41]noticed some people just go type on youtube when people get mad
[3:44]see what they do akbar madness you can't believe this man is
[3:49]a professor this man is a doctor this man is a human
[3:51]being he turns worse than an animal why because he was provoked
[3:56]because he is angry and that's why amir al-ms anger is a
[4:07]type of madness you really become crazy and he says in the
[4:16]hadith it begins with madness and it ends with regret you become
[4:19]mad but then once you become sane once your you know your
[4:23]intellect starts working once again you regret what you did there's some
[4:26]people you see they fight they're very decent people they have good
[4:30]jobs respectful people but because they get into a fight they break
[4:33]tables they break chairs they break people's property they commit so many
[4:38]crimes after that don't they regret it the imam alaihissalam says this
[4:42]is a type of madness when you're angry just look at yourself
[4:44]imagine if you look at yourself in the mirror when you are
[4:49]angry he says he says when you're angry it's as if the
[4:59]shaytan has placed fire it's a burning sensation like a coal burning
[5:04]inside you the shaytan is trying to light it up if they
[5:08]just videotape you brothers and sisters when you are angry just your
[5:11]face becomes so scary that you will feel so embarrassed this is
[5:16]me the imam says look at the angry person his eyes they
[5:20]become red his neck it starts swelling it becomes big you see
[5:23]the you see the veins you've seen angry people they're yelling and
[5:27]screaming you can see the veins on their neck he looks like
[5:30]a shaytan the imam says you become a miniature shaytan when you're
[5:35]angry and you don't know what's going on the imam says this
[5:37]is when the shaytan comes and he rides you he rides you
[5:41]he doesn't just whisper because you've become a vehicle for the shaytan
[5:44]a vehicle without intellect becomes a vehicle for the shaytan you know
[5:48]this is one reason why allah azzawajal prohibited us from drinking alcohol
[5:52]because when you drink alcohol you lose your aquil you become like
[5:57]an animal and worse that's why you see people here in america
[6:00]when they get drunk they do all sorts of habits all sorts
[6:03]of shameless acts sleeping with they don't know who they wake up
[6:07]in other people's beds so much haram they do because this akan
[6:09]is what guides you without the what are we we're animals they
[6:13]say you know when you take a logic class they say the
[6:18]human being's definition he is an animal with intellect take away the
[6:22]intellect he becomes even worse than the animal so the imam alayhis
[6:27]salaam says that you become like the shaitaan this is the time
[6:31]that he comes to strike you so that's why when we are
[6:36]angry we need strong willpower so that we can control ourselves the
[6:40]holy prophet sallallahu alaihi is saying the strong individual is it the
[6:49]one that is you know very strong and brave in for example
[6:53]wrestling right you've seen those wrestling matches and i don't know i
[6:57]remember there used to be wwf 20 years ago i don't know
[6:58]what they call it now you know those wrestling matches the wrestlers
[7:00]he says those aren't the true strong ones he says he says
[7:10]the strong individual is the one that can control that can contain
[7:14]his anger when he's about to explode just try it brothers and
[7:18]sisters when someone provokes you sometimes someone comes and offends you insults
[7:21]you even worse he says he insults your mother what happens to
[7:25]you right think about it is it easier to vent and explode
[7:30]and go hit that person or is it easier to stay calm
[7:33]relaxed and manage your anger which one's easier it's easier to explode
[7:38]right so the harder thing the is if you contain your anger
[7:43]and manage it the prophet says this is the strong one the
[7:46]one that can contain his anger not the one that can everyone
[7:50]can do that that's animals can do the animals when you attack
[7:53]them they attack right back so that's why we need strong will
[7:58]so that if someone provokes you you stay calm how your will
[8:02]has to be very strong that you can say no there is
[8:05]something inside you telling you fight back swear back you know and
[8:07]solve to go and start this problem but something inside you tells
[8:12]you to stay calm one day a man comes to an imam
[8:15]al-baqarah he was a christian man and imam al-baqar's name is taken
[8:20]from al baqr bakr in the arabic language means if you cut
[8:23]something because the hadith of the prophet says that the battle is
[8:27]the one that will basically cut knowledge cut it open and delve
[8:31]into it so he was called al-baqar this christian man he came
[8:36]and he started to make fun of the imam's name you see
[8:39]sometimes people your name sounds like something else they make fun of
[8:43]your name this christian man he told al-imam al-baqarah he told them
[8:48]antel bakar he called him bakar bakar also means cow in the
[8:51]arabic language bakaris cow so he called him bakar he's mocking the
[8:56]imam now some of us right away will punch him i've seen
[8:59]this you know i remember when i was in school someone the
[9:02]slightest the slightest you know of uh offense or they they they
[9:06]they do something that you don't like right away they start every
[9:08]day there's a couple of fights in school al-imam al-baqarah salaam keeps
[9:12]us cool the man tells him are you the bakker of the
[9:15]cow the imam tells him no i'm the bakr the imam is
[9:18]not provoked the imam he speaks with him as if he has
[9:21]he had made a mistake so this man he was kind of
[9:27]disappointed he wanted the imam to get mad and angry right but
[9:28]the imam he kept his cool he told him no i am
[9:32]the bakr so he said you know what let me now offend
[9:34]his mother so he then started to offend the mother of imam
[9:40]al-baqarah he said antab you're the son of the woman your mother
[9:43]was a tabba was a cook now this man he considered that
[9:46]a very low job you know it's like you say someone your
[9:48]mother is a janitor something like that right now why did he
[9:53]choose that why did he mean it's an offensive way i don't
[9:54]know but he meant it in a very offensive way the imam
[9:58]alaihi assalam kept to school once again he didn't say my mother
[10:02]your mother is this this is what we do right if someone
[10:04]speaks against my mother i speak about his mother what does his
[10:07]mother have to do with hell he's a bad individual his mother
[10:09]is innocent but right away we start picking on his mother so
[10:12]the imam al-imam al-baqara when he heard this he said that was
[10:17]his job yeah what's the big deal he kept his cool once
[10:20]again the imam knew the the the objective of this christian man
[10:24]was to provoke the imam he wanted the imam to go wild
[10:29]and crazy he did not no this is an imam al-baqarah he
[10:31]has more willpower than all of humanity you can never provoke an
[10:36]imam so this is number this is the second thing he told
[10:39]him and then number three when he saw this man is it
[10:42]being provoked he started to offend the mother of the imam he
[10:49]began to call all these you know all these expletives against the
[10:52]mother of imam al-baqara he began to swear at her and offend
[10:58]her look at how ali imam al-bakr managed his anger this is
[11:01]taqwa brothers and sisters taqwa is when you can say no when
[11:05]you can resist that urge when you are angry this is taqwa
[11:08]the imam gave him this answer he told him and kunta khan
[11:12]for allah if you were truthful when you said my mother is
[11:18]this and that may allah forgive my mother but if you were
[11:20]lying but if you were lying and slandering my mother may allah
[11:28]forgive you this man was appalled he said allahu akbar who is
[11:34]this man is he a human being this man has to be
[11:37]a prophet that he has such that he has such willpower you
[11:41]can never subhanallah you can never make the imam get mad this
[11:43]is when the hadith says this christian man he said the shahada
[11:48]detain and he became a muslim because he knew this man has
[11:50]to be someone that is divinely guided by allah so this is
[11:56]with anger anytime we are confronted with anger we need willpower to
[12:02]resist that anger that willpower is taqwa brothers and sisters so this
[12:05]is number one the first time we sin when we sin is
[12:08]is because we are angry the other times that we usually sin
[12:13]is because we are faced with desires we see something that we
[12:18]want that is correct any of the different desires that the human
[12:21]being has that allah speaks about in the holy quran when we
[12:26]are tempted by those desires we also need a strong willpower let
[12:30]me give you an example of willpower when it comes to resisting
[12:33]the desires imagine you're doing a diet you're doing a diet for
[12:38]two reasons number one because your weight is going up you're overweight
[12:42]and number two because your doctor tells you you have high cholesterol
[12:45]you have diabetes for health purposes you have to cut out those
[12:49]fatty foods no more cake for example no more sugars no more
[12:52]of those processed foods so you say okay i'm going to start
[12:57]my diet and then a friend invites you over his house he
[13:00]doesn't know you're dieting so he brings a slice of chocolate cheesecake
[13:06]and imagine chocolate cheesecake is your favorite food and he places it
[13:12]in front of you eat this chocolate what happens to your brothers
[13:16]and sisters you know what happens to you there's one part of
[13:19]your brain this is called the impulsive brain your desires this part
[13:24]of your brain tells you eat it look at how beautiful it
[13:26]looks look at the cheese look at the frosting look right you
[13:30]cannot focus but on the taste so it focuses on the taste
[13:35]and the pleasure tells you eat it that's why you feel temptation
[13:38]to eat that slice of chocolate even though you know it's bad
[13:41]this is your impulsive brain but then you have another brain another
[13:44]part of your brain called the rational brain that part tells you
[13:48]i know it tastes good i know it's the best cheesecake in
[13:50]the world it's homemade whatever right but however if you eat it
[13:56]now you will regret it later so don't eat it because there
[14:01]are consequences the first part of your brain the impulsive doesn't think
[14:05]about the consequences it just looks at the short term instant gratification
[14:09]the second part no looks at the consequences if it's not worth
[14:13]it tells you stay away leave this cake because you'll regret it
[14:15]later you're going to get sick you're going to get much more
[14:18]you know you're going to gain weight and then you will regret
[14:22]it so what happens to you here there's an inner struggle right
[14:25]here there's an inner struggle a part of you your desires tells
[14:28]you eat it but your intellect your aqua tells you no stay
[14:32]away from it this brothers and sisters this constant struggle that exists
[14:37]with just a slice of cake it exists with haram anytime we
[14:40]are faced with haram anytime there is something tempting me from the
[14:44]dunya your impulsive brain your desires your nephs and the shaytan remember
[14:49]is always on the side on that side it's all he's also
[14:53]whispering inside you he's telling you yes eat it he tells you
[14:55]the shaitan and your naps and your impulsive brain they tell you
[15:00]do the haram they want the instant pleasure but then your apel
[15:03]your conscience your fitrah your nafsa tells you what no stay away
[15:08]because if you do this haram now yes you will enjoy it
[15:10]now but you will have to pay later because one day you
[15:12]will die you will be placed in the grave allah will hold
[15:14]you accountable stay away from it this will anger allah this is
[15:18]an inner struggle that exists between every human being inside every human
[15:23]being when he is faced with desire three types of beings the
[15:33]first angels angels are what they are pure intellect they don't have
[15:37]desires that's why the quran they says disobey allah because there's nothing
[15:41]to tempt them distract them away from allah they are just intellect
[15:45]and then he created on the other spectrum he created animals animals
[15:49]are pure what pure desires right they don't have intellect to guide
[15:53]them so that's why you find animals always just worried about its
[15:57]food and then he created something in between and that is you
[16:00]and me human beings we have intellect like the angels and we
[16:03]have desires like human beings the human being is the only being
[16:07]that has akhil and has what and has desires the imam says
[16:14]whoever his will overcome whoever's has the will power so that his
[16:18]overcomes his desire that person will become better than angels because angels
[16:24]didn't have that weakness didn't have that distraction but you did and
[16:29]you still followed your so you're better than angels and then the
[16:33]imam says but whoever his desires they are stronger than his aqua
[16:36]he ends up just following after dunya and desires he's worse than
[16:41]an animal because animal can't do any better an animal doesn't know
[16:45]to stay away from this or that because allah didn't give them
[16:49]allah gave me and yeah i become like an animal there are
[16:51]human beings they live like animals brothers and sisters every haram every
[16:55]immoral act they commit allah has given them the aqua but they
[16:58]disregard the athlete and they live like an animal so every human
[17:03]being we have this inner struggle inside us what is this called
[17:07]this is called jihad neff's brothers and sisters it is a form
[17:10]of jihad it's a struggle it's a war inside you between the
[17:15]desires the impulsive brain and your alkali irrational brain one says this
[17:20]way the other says the other way so whoever brothers and sisters
[17:24]is able to overcome his impulsive desires whoever is able to overcome
[17:30]his desires that is the person that has the taqwa amir al-mu'min
[17:35]narrates that one day a group of muslims they were sent by
[17:39]rasulullah to go and fight they went and they fought in a
[17:44]battle and they came back they came back triumphant rasulullah told them
[17:48]congratulations on being triumphant in the small jihad al-jihad al-azhar and now
[17:55]you have the big jihad and the grand jihad in front of
[17:59]you so they objected they told him ya rasool allah what do
[18:01]you mean small jihad we went we fought with our sword we
[18:05]put our lives on the line we're about to die and you
[18:07]call this the small jihad what's bigger than this the prophet told
[18:10]them what's bigger than this is when you are fighting against your
[18:14]own nafs you're fighting against your own desires this is a much
[18:19]more difficult battle than the jihad against the enemies of allah why
[18:22]because the in the battle against the enemies of allah you can
[18:26]never lose can you how can you lose against the kafir imagine
[18:29]you're fighting with rasulullah and badur can you lose no because there's
[18:33]one of two options one of two outcomes either you kill the
[18:38]enemy and you want or they kill you you still want because
[18:41]you're a shahid hamza al-islam was killed in uh but did he
[18:44]lose his shaykh he did not lose he became a shaykh imam
[18:47]hussain on the day of imam hussain defeated his enemies through shahadah
[18:52]so when you are with allah you can never lose it's a
[18:57]win-win situation when you fight against the enemies of allah but in
[19:00]el jahada you can lose that's a difference you see that's why
[19:04]the prophet calls this al-aqbar because this is much more instrumental and
[19:08]you can lose because if your desires overwhelm you if your desires
[19:13]overpower your intellect you become like an animal we become like the
[19:16]example i gave of that person that goes to obey the law
[19:19]and he takes the head of imam hussain for money this is
[19:23]what we do when your desires overpower you you will do every
[19:27]halam just to please your desire you become a slave of the
[19:29]dunya and you lose islam you lose this test of life um
[19:35]imam hussain alaihi salam was on the right path he knew this
[19:38]was the imam of the imam the representative of allah why did
[19:41]he fight him he told himself he told himself because of mulker
[19:44]because i want mulker i want to become the governor of ray
[19:48]president-day tahran in iran because of that desire he said what he
[19:52]said let me go and follow my nips so when you follow
[19:56]your navs it could lead you to fighting against the imam of
[20:00]your time as we gave many examples of how they also fought
[20:03]against imam ali why because the imam said to dunya because the
[20:08]dunya was too sweet so this is the jihadis in this jahadun
[20:11]nafs brothers and sisters in order to be triumphant like i said
[20:17]we need strong willpower the stronger your your willpower is the better
[20:21]you can resist that temptation the better you can resist your desires
[20:26]now you may say i have the weakest of willpowers what do
[20:29]i do that's it i'm doomed no luckily willpower is not set
[20:35]in stone it's not like everybody who has a strong willpower was
[20:39]born like that will power scientists say is like a muscle is
[20:43]are people born with six packs no are they born buff no
[20:47]they have to go to the gym they have to exercise then
[20:51]they become big right then they get muscles likewise scientists say your
[20:55]willpower power is a muscle this muscle could be weak in the
[20:58]beginning but you can train it and exercise it so that it
[21:02]becomes strong and that's why if you just write on the internet
[21:07]how to how how can i strengthen my willpower one common answer
[21:10]you'll get you can try this at home is take a cold
[21:12]shower in the morning don't take a warm shower because your naps
[21:15]you're lazy you know you you like the warm water in the
[21:18]morning take a cold shower you don't like that right when you
[21:22]subject yourself to that cold shower this makes your willpower why because
[21:26]you can endure more now take a cold shower another thing don't
[21:31]snooze for example you know how we wake up i have to
[21:32]wake up for school or i have to wake up for work
[21:34]i have to wake up at seven i start snoozing from six
[21:39]some people every five ten minutes news news news news news for
[21:42]an hour this is terrible for our sleep by the way and
[21:45]for your health don't snooze the first time you hear jump out
[21:48]of your bed this makes your willpower stronger so we we can
[21:52]make our willpower stronger it's like a muscle but you have to
[21:58]exercise it and this is where fasting comes into play brothers and
[22:02]sisters fasting we said the holy quran says allah ordained it so
[22:05]that we can achieve taqwa and we said taqwa means stay away
[22:10]from haram resist the urges of this dunya right resist the urge
[22:14]of temptation of desires and likewise of anger in order to resist
[22:17]you need willpower how does fasting lead to strong willpower because what
[22:21]are you doing in your fasting you're constantly telling your impulsive brain
[22:26]you're hungry right you want to eat you're telling him no no
[22:29]no i will not eat one minute before 8 33.
[22:32]you see how you're disciplining yourself you're teaching yourself will power every
[22:37]time you tell yourself no i'm not gonna eat many times we're
[22:42]hungry right it's 8 8 15 there's half an hour an hour
[22:47]left we're hungry we're thirsty some of us are gilas we're waiting
[22:49]for the aguilas to smoke at night right we have to tell
[22:53]ourselves no let me wait when you tell yourself no you're telling
[22:56]your impulsive brain your desires that there are rules there are laws
[23:01]this is willpower willpower means you control yourself some people their desires
[23:06]control them having strong willpower means you control yourself this is what
[23:12]siam does it disciplines you 12 hours not one minutes before i'm
[23:15]going to eat you see everyone's doing it so you say let
[23:18]me do it too what does that teach you after doing it
[23:20]one week 10 days 30 days eventually that will give you the
[23:26]willpower to say no to halal after 30 days of saying no
[23:30]to halal if i was able to say no to water water
[23:33]we can't live without it sometimes you know you're so thirsty in
[23:38]ramadan you think you're gonna faint because of how thirsty you are
[23:40]you want faith you think you will faint you were able to
[23:44]say no to water after ramadan you could easily say no to
[23:47]alcohol for example i said no to halal now i can say
[23:50]no to haram so this is what fasting does to us it
[23:54]makes our willpower stronger so we can have the courage to say
[24:00]no to this is what fasting is all about allah says fast
[24:04]so that you achieve taqwa how does fasting lead to taqwa once
[24:09]again because in order for you to have taqwa you need strong
[24:13]willpower strong willpower means i tell my nups what to do means
[24:16]i tell myself yes or no fasting you're disciplining yourself you're telling
