The argument of whether Allah (SWT) has predestined us or granted us complete independence is an area of great debate amongst Islamic Schools of Thought such as the Mu'tazila and the Ash'ariya. Between those two extremes, Sayed Ahmed Al-Qazwini discusses the balanced viewpoint of AhlulBayt (A.S.) on this topic through the Hadith of Imam Al-Sadiq (A.S.) : "It is neither predestination nor independence but a position between the two" Al Rasoul Islamic Society, Halifax - Canada | The Holy Month of Ramadan 2015

[0:00][Music] [Music] ald muhamad m [Music] brothers and sisters did not leave
[1:18]the umah to go astray after him but rather he left for
[1:25]them a source of guidance he left for them the Holy Quran
[1:27]the book of Allah and he appointed Ed qualified successors that were
[1:36]to represent him after him and that's why you find appointed im
[1:45]as his rightful successor because he was the most qualified of all
[1:52]the companions but what you find is unfortunately this will ofam was
[2:02]not executed but rather the Muslims decided to choose their own khif
[2:07]they went and they chose their own khif and they rejected the
[2:14]appointment ofif that was not appointed and what happened is that since
[2:20]this position the position of represents he is the manifestation of rasool
[2:27]Allah he represents rasool Allah this is the successorship of that's why
[2:33]in the same way that had certain qualities Theif must have the
[2:42]same qualities Theif must be qualified he must have the same virtues
[2:46]as and that in the same way that is just in the
[2:51]same way that is wise and knowledgeable his successor must likewise be
[2:56]just wise and knowledgeable or else he's not the successor of of
[3:00]Allah he's not representing so what happened these that came and they
[3:09]failed the position of they were not qualified for the position they
[3:14]did not have the necessary qualities and virtues for and that's why
[3:19]you find they began to make many mistakes they began to mess
[3:22]up these people began to make errors and they began to mislead
[3:30]people and miss inform people for example just as a quick example
[3:34]it is narrated inah Muslim that one day a man comes to
[3:42]the second khif and he asks him a question he tells him
[3:44]if I am in the desert and there's no water and I
[3:50]need to pray either do or and there's no water what do
[3:56]I do Omar the second khif he's the representative of he is
[4:03]the successor of he tells him don't pray Sal is not on
[4:06]you because there's no water according to the he's another companion he's
[4:13]listening so he comes and he tells him did you forget about
[4:22]where did go all of a sudden Allah subhana mentions in many
[4:25]verses in the Holy Quran Allah clearly says it in the Quran
[4:34]did you forget about so this shows that amongst the basic basic
[4:40]concepts and laws of Islam some of the they were ignorant of
[4:46]so obviously they cannot fail this position they began to mislead people
[4:51]and they began to make errors and this became especially evident during
[4:56]the reign of B when mua and B came this became very
[5:00]evident because mua and his and his uh ruling family Ben they
[5:08]were very corrupt they were evil they were Hypocrites they would commit
[5:12]so many sins they would commit transgression oppression Mischief Evil all in
[5:19]the name of I am Theif of so now people began to
[5:25]notice what's the problem you're the but you commit all this all
[5:31]these crimes all this oppression what's going on so was placed in
[5:37]a tight corner I'm the but my actions do not reflect so
[5:41]mu he has to justify his actions instead of saying yes I
[5:48]not the I just want Power instead of saying the problem is
[5:51]in me he blames it on Allah so what is to justify
[5:58]his actions and to vindicate his position he begins to promote the
[6:02]concept and Bel in predestination so what does he tell people that
[6:07]it's not my fault I'm forced Allah subhanahu waala had predestined that
[6:12]I kill so when he's asked for example why did you kill
[6:17]the he's a companion of he says it's not up to me
[6:22]I am forced Allah subhana predestin me to kill him Allah subhanahu
[6:26]waala is forcing me I'm like a puppet I'm like a dummy
[6:31]I'm like a robot and the remote control is in the hands
[6:35]of Allah so don't blame me blame Allah why did he write
[6:39]for me to Kill Ya amongst the crimes that he did was
[6:42]that he burned the why did you burn the this is the
[6:46]Holy House of Allah subhana tala don't ask me Allah wanted the
[6:49]Kaa to burn he was the one that predestined this so they
[6:54]used this belief of predestination in order to justify their actions or
[6:58]else before mua there was no believe in predestination the Muslims not
[7:03]believe in predestination mua was the one that began promoting this idea
[7:07]to justify his actions to blame it all on Allah subhah wa
[7:10]taala and not only did he promote it but he also tried
[7:15]to lay the academic foundations to this belief he tried to bring
[7:19]evidence to support it so he gathered some of the Muslim Scholars
[7:25]of his time like Abu Hur and other people and their job
[7:28]he put them in a committee and he put them on on
[7:32]a payroll and their job was to what just find verses in
[7:34]the Quran twist their meaning and tell people that this is the
[7:40]proof that we are predestined and as you know the Holy Quran
[7:43]is a very vague it's a very allegorical and ambiguous book and
[7:49]the various verses of the Quran can be subject to more than
[7:53]one interpretation so he would twist the meanings these Scholars and they
[7:57]would interpret it in a way that would lead to to the
[8:01]belief in predestination and you find that these for example they use
[8:08]certain verses in the Quran to prove that we are predestined it's
[8:12]all Allah's actions it's not mine I'm just a robot for example
[8:16]they use this verse you can never make decision unless Allah subhana
[8:25]tala makes that decision before you there you have it we're forced
[8:29]we're roll robots were predestined don't ask me ask Allah for my
[8:33]actions I'm not responsible another verse Allah subhanahu waala says when you
[8:41]threw you thought it was you throwing the spear it was Allah
[8:44]subhana T you were just a puppet you're just a puppet a
[8:49]dummy a robot in another verse Allah subhanahu waala says no one
[8:59]can believe except if Allah permits so why do I not believe
[9:04]because Allah didn't permit me it's not my fault in another verse
[9:08]Allah says Allah subhah waala guides whoever he wants whoever Allah wants
[9:16]and he misguides whoever he wants so it's all in the hands
[9:19]of Allah subhanahu waala and this believe in predestination it began to
[9:24]spread amongst the Muslims until today you have a major School of
[9:27]thoughts from the Muslims that believe in the idea of predestination that
[9:34]were all forced they believe in this this is a part of
[9:38]their and they are called the and this is most of the
[9:44]Muslims today the they believe in predestination now where did they get
[9:48]this belief the origin was mu and now in order to in
[9:57]order to answer this misconception and this fallacy in order to refute
[10:05]this claim that we are all predestined we have to look at
[10:10]three points three ways we can answer this are we predestined are
[10:14]we forced that Allah subhah wa tala give us free will or
[10:17]everything is predestined and we have absolutely no say in our actions
[10:22]now obviously we know this is incorrect but how do we answer
[10:26]to this three points three ways number one the first answer is
[10:29]very simple simple and that every single human being they feel through
[10:34]their their their conscience their feelings that they are not forced every
[10:41]human being that's sayane knows through this his conscience that he is
[10:49]not forced whoever came to the husia today knows that they did
[10:52]it out of their own free will I don't need someone to
[10:57]prove that to me I can feel it whoever came to the
[10:58]it was their decision they know that they can feel it and
[11:03]whoever decided to go do something Haram to go to the bar
[11:05]let's say they did that based on their own free will and
[11:10]their own decision and choice no one has to come and prove
[11:14]that to me I can feel it and that brothers and sisters
[11:16]there are certain things in which it is difficult to prove academically
[11:20]through arguments if someone comes and tells you that right now let's
[11:25]say it's still day they tell you it's night how can you
[11:30]prove to that he looks at he says no it's not and
[11:33]he brings you 500 philosophical proofs that it's not you're not going
[11:37]to be able to defeat that person because this person is debating
[11:42]something that's undebatable it'd be a waste of time such people the
[11:45]best way to answer them is not through a philosophical answer but
[11:51]no it's by going back to their feelings and their conscience and
[11:55]their F like if someone tells you that fire doesn't burn Fire
[12:00]doesn't burn we think it burns but Fire doesn't burn and he
[12:04]brings you philosophical evidence to that the best way to answer to
[12:07]that person is to take that person's hand and put it on
[12:11]the fire once he says ouch and he burns you say that's
[12:13]the proof that fire burns that's the greatest proof so for some
[12:15]people it's a waste of time to use philosophical reasons and reasoning
[12:23]so when it comes to the idea of free will or predestination
[12:26]the greatest testimony that we have Free Will is then we can
[12:30]feel it inside us when I move my hands when I choose
[12:34]to listen to music this was up to me when I choose
[12:38]to read Quran this was all up to me and I know
[12:40]that I know that I don't need anyone to prove that to
[12:41]me I can feel that I did that based on my decision
[12:45]and that's why whoever is sitting here they can change their minds
[12:47]and get up and leave no one's forcing them I can get
[12:50]up and leave I can stay there's no one that's forcing me
[12:52]I can feel that I don't need anyone to prove that to
[12:57]me and that's why it's narrated that during the time of IM
[13:02]there was a man a man a wise man he was the
[13:06]companion of the imams by the name of buhul buhul he would
[13:12]pretend that he's crazy but he was a very wise man he
[13:16]was he would pretend that he's insane so that the governments would
[13:19]not hurt him and bother him so one day he goes into
[13:25]the Masjid and he sees Abu hanifah the famous Abu hanifah [Music]
[13:39]he sees Abu he is sitting in a circle and he's teaching
[13:45]his students so he begins to listen and he he begins to
[13:48]listen and amongst the things that Abu hanifah says he begins to
[13:56]criticize IM his St his teacher he tells his students that IM
[14:00]says a few things that I disagree with him I think he's
[14:05]wrong the first thing IM says that we will never see Allah
[14:11]we will never see Allah in this D nor in the there
[14:13]will never come a time in which we we will be able
[14:18]to see Allah Abu says that I think he's wrong I think
[14:20]anything that exists we should be able to see it if not
[14:26]in this D at least in the next life so I think
[14:29]IM is wrong and this is the belief of most Muslims today
[14:31]the Sunni School of thoughts they have many and especially the wahabis
[14:37]that on the day of judgment we will all see Allah subhanahu
[14:40]wa taala and there are hadiths inkari and other books that say
[14:45]that said they say that said that everyone will see he told
[14:51]his companions you will see Allah on the day of judgment with
[14:53]your eyes physically just like you're seeing the moon right now so
[14:58]this was number one number two the second problem he has with
[15:03]IM he says IM says that Allah subh on the day of
[15:10]judgment he will punish the Devil by burning him in the fires
[15:15]of hell I reply hanifa says my reply is that this is
[15:19]impossible because the Devil is a Jin and the Jin are created
[15:21]from what from fire so how can you punish someone who is
[15:27]Created from Fire with Fire doesn't make sense he won't burn so
[15:30]that's number two and number three the third problem he has with
[15:35]IM is that IM says that we are responsible for our actions
[15:38]this is what we're speaking about we have free will and we
[15:43]are responsible for our actions while I believe Abu hanifah says that
[15:46]no according to the Quran the verses that we mentioned it's all
[15:50]predestined Allah subhah wa taala is responsible for our actions not us
[15:57]he listening once abif finished he replies but he replies in the
[16:04]most powerful and interesting way he doesn't sit on the table and
[16:08]let's discuss point a point B point he gives him a very
[16:10]beautiful answer you know what he does and this answer he he
[16:15]does one thing and this act is an answer to all three
[16:18]questions he takes a piece of rock and he throws it on
[16:23]the head of Abu hanif Abu hanifah begins to bleed Abu hanifah
[16:26]goes crazy he tells him this is your answer he just throws
[16:31]a piece of rock he goes he he's Furious he begins to
[16:36]complain why did you do this he tells him I'll tell you
[16:41]the answer the answer is that Rock that Rock is the answer
[16:45]to all of your three questions number one you say that anything
[16:48]that exists has to be seen are you in pain abif yes
[16:53]where is the pain show it I don't see the pain that's
[16:54]number one you see sometimes it's better just to Pro this prove
[17:00]the arguments of others through these ways that's number one number two
[17:04]you say that the devil cannot be hurt by the fire because
[17:09]he's made of fire what are you made of You're Made Of
[17:11]T you're made of soil what is the rock made of it's
[17:16]made of soil so how did the soil hurt the soil that's
[17:19]number two and number three you say that Allah is responsible for
[17:23]our actions go ask Allah why I thrw the stone don't ask
[17:27]me I don't care so with this beautiful reply he invalidates and
[17:31]refutes all the three arguments sometimes certain people this is how we
[17:35]have to reply to them because they are questioning things that shouldn't
[17:41]be questioned things that are obvious to the human being so this
[17:44]is number one it's obvious and every single human being feels that
[17:49]we're not predestined that we are responsible for what we do number
[17:52]two this belief in predestination is very dangerous in that it implies
[17:58]that that Allah subhana tala may God forbid Allah subhana T is
[18:04]a the belief in predestination implies that Allah is unjust he is
[18:10]an oppressor he transgresses Allah subhanahu wa taala is a how and
[18:15]that the believe of PR in predestination is basically that Allah forces
[18:19]me to do bad and then he punishes me isn't this obviously
[18:26]it's there is a famous poem a line of poetry in the
[18:33]Arabic language that speaks about this that says someone it's as if
[18:42]someone takes I tie up someone's hands and I throw them in
[18:44]the water and then I tell him beware don't get wet does
[18:48]that make sense you're throwing him in the water but you're telling
[18:50]him don't get wet it doesn't make sense you're the one that's
[18:53]throwing him in the water so if this was true if predestination
[18:58]was true this would place the biggest pretext in the hands of
[19:03]the Allah subhana tal would ask the dictators why were you evil
[19:09]they could obviously right away answer Allah and tell him it's because
[19:12]you wanted me to be evil it's because you predestined me to
[19:15]be evil so if Allah was to ask on the day of
[19:18]judgment Sadam why did you kill all those innocent people or he
[19:24]would ask for example or alif or he would ask mua or
[19:26]any other dictator or Tyrant why did did you what you why
[19:31]did you do what you did obviously they could justify their actions
[19:34]and say because you wanted this because I was forced I had
[19:40]no choice I was predestined so this is proof that this doesn't
[19:43]make sense this would justify the actions of any evildoer if we
[19:46]would believe in the idea of predestination it's impossible and it would
[19:50]mean that Allah subhana tala is a V and that's why brothers
[19:56]and sisters that's why anytime this is a law of any time
[19:59]there is no Free Will and any action then there is no
[20:04]accountability there is aith from it's very famous it's called the holy
[20:12]prophet in thisi he says that there are certain in instances and
[20:17]occasions where the human being is not responsible for his actions and
[20:23]he lists nine different times nine different things for example ignorance if
[20:30]I am ignorant not always in certain circumstances if I am ignorant
[20:36]Allah subhah waala will not hold me hold me responsible for my
[20:40]ignorance only in certain circumstances not always another P portion the prophet
[20:44][Music] says if I accidentally do something or I forget Allah will
[20:52]not hold me accountable if I cannot bear something someone can't fast
[20:55]during the month of Ramadan Allah won't hold them accountable because they
[21:00]can't bear it and one of the nine things is if someone
[21:07]is forced to do something Allah will not hold them responsible if
[21:10]someone forces me to drink alcohol if someone forces me to do
[21:15]a sin if someone holds the gun says break your fast will
[21:17]Allah hold me responsible for that no because I was forced there
[21:22]was no free will the basis of accountability and punishment is Free
[21:26]Will if there was no free will there is no accountability so
[21:30]that's why we understand that predestination will lead to because the basis
[21:36]of punishment is Free Will this is number two and number three
[21:44]this idea and concept of predestination is so ridiculous that it completely
[21:50]nullifies religion there would be no point in establishing religion when Allah
[21:53]establishes Islam religions and he sends Messengers what's the point the point
[21:59]is to guide people right if Allah has already written for the
[22:02]bad people that they're bad what's the point of sending prophets to
[22:05]them and asking them to be good he goes to those evil
[22:10]he tells them believe in Allah if predestination was right they could
[22:13]have answered we wish we could believe but we can't we forc
[22:18]to be bad Allah wanted me to be bad so what's the
[22:19]point of sending prophets what's the point of establishing a religion if
[22:23]everything is already decided the good people are going to become good
[22:26]the prophet is sent or he's not sent he's not going to
[22:30]add anything because Allah wanted them to be good and the bad
[22:32]people are going to stay bad whether Allah sends a million prophets
[22:35]or he doesn't so what's the point of sending prophets if there's
[22:38]predestination what's the point of this test the whole life we're all
[22:45]zombies we're all robots it would be no point in establishing religion
[22:48]and making a test and trying people who's good who's bad so
[22:56]Allah sees who's better that's why he created us there would be
[23:00]no points because Allah has already decided this from a million years
[23:03]ago there would be no there would be good people would it
[23:07]be better than bad people because the good people were lucky they
[23:09]got chosen and the bad people were just unlucky they got chosen
[23:14]to be bad so obviously this belief is ridiculous it's ludicrous it's
[23:20]silly and because of how ridiculous this belief is you find other
[23:24]Muslims by the name of Al they saw how ridiculous this belief
[23:30]is they said no we cannot believe in predestination no one is
[23:33]forced when I am bad it's because of myself it's because of
[23:36]my decision when I'm good it's because of my decision so what
[23:40]did they do they left this extreme and they went to another
[23:43]extreme and they began to believe in another concept called is basically
[23:51]the idea that we are completely independent of Allah we don't need
[23:56]him in anything so one extreme that the believed in was that
[24:01]Allah has complete control over everything we're just puppets everything is decided
[24:06]The Other Extreme is that Allah has absolutely no control over everything
[24:09]we're completely independent the the because they saw how ridiculous that belief
[24:18]is predestination they went to but they fell into another problem they
[24:23]wanted to run from one problem they fell into another problem because
[24:28]has also another problem yes Allah is not I'm running away from
[24:33]that problem but I am running in the problem of what sh
[24:38]this is almost like believing in sh because if I believe that
[24:42]I no longer need Allah and I am independent of Allah I'm
[24:47]Al I'm I'm I'm another God now I don't need Allah this
[24:49]is sh the idea that I don't need Allah this is sh
[24:53]that Allah is independent and I independent so there's two there isn't
[24:58]one so the they wanted to get rid of this problem they
[25:01]fell into another problem one extreme that were completely forced The Other
[25:06]Extreme that were completely independent and both of them you see there's
[25:09]a problem with both of them so what is the right answer
[25:14]the right answer brothers and sisters you will not find it but
[25:18]with and are IMS between these two extremes what the IM he
[25:26]comes and he gives us the solution and in the famous is
[25:31]narrated saying many of you have memorized it both are wrong there
[25:41]is no predestination complete predestination nor is there complete Independence but then
[25:47]the IM says however it's in the middle we have to seek
[25:54]a middle course there isn't complete predestination nor is there complete Independence
[25:59]it's a mix of the two you have to go right in
[26:05]the middle there is some predestination and there is some Independence there
[26:09]is also Free Will and only if you mix these two you
[26:14]will get the recipe of the correct but the question is here
[26:19]what didan what does this mean what is he talking about our
[26:30]brothers and sisters when it comes to explaining our say that this
[26:40]of could mean one of three things one of three meanings the
[26:46]first meaning of is that the IM is saying that there are
[26:52]two different types of things in our lives there are some things
[26:57]in our lives that are predestined and there are some things that
[27:02]are free will we're independent so the IM is dividing things of
[27:05]matters of Our Lives into two parts some of them are predestined
[27:08]some of them are by choice for example what's predestined I have
[27:14]no choice for example my birth did any one of us choose
[27:18]where and when they were born I hope not did anyone of
[27:24]you choose when they were born or where or when I was
[27:26]born in the Year 1980 for example 1990 2000 I wish I
[27:31]was born in the year 1000 too bad that wasn't a choice
[27:35]I was born in this family and this country was that a
[27:37]choice no I will die at this age for many people is
[27:42]that a choice for many people it's not a choice I will
[27:47]die in this place is that a choice no how I look
[27:48]how I look is that a choice well it used not to
[27:53]be a choice before but now with all the cosmetic surgeries they
[27:56]have also made it a choice but in general it's not a
[28:02]choice my height is that a choice it's not a choice so
[28:05]all these Natural Factors all these physical factors of my life they're
[28:10]predestined if I was born in a poor family in Africa and
[28:15]another person was born in a wealthy family this was predestined this
[28:19]wasn't by choice or I was born in a Muslim family or
[28:24]a Christian family this is all predestined but however our actions the
[28:30]right to choose from right and wrong this is Free Will this
[28:36]is based on the decision of the human being this is not
[28:39]predestined this is not predestined and chosen by Allah subhana wa taala
[28:45]this Allah subhana he gave it to me so there is a
[28:48]little ja Force predestination and there is a little Allah didn't give
[28:55]you everything no your actions he put that at at your disposal
[28:58]but all the other things like where you're born your looks and
[29:01]where you die this was chosen by Allah subhanahu waala and that's
[29:08]what the IM means by that's the first meaning the second meaning
[29:14]of is a little more delicate the SEC the second and third
[29:18]meanings are a little delicate and that's why I need you to
[29:22]pay close attention brothers and sisters if we wander for 10 seconds
[29:25]we begin to think about and how hungry I am I will
[29:29]lose you and you will not understand what I'm saying so please
[29:33]play close [Music] attention the second meaning of say is that the
[29:45]IM is saying that we are not independent nor are we forced
[29:52]how the first view if you remember it divided the matters of
[29:58]our life into two parts some some are predestined some are free
[30:02]will the second view says that no the Imam is not speaking
[30:06]about the different matters of Life the Imam is speaking about my
[30:10]choice only my free my choice the Imam says it's not by
[30:17]force nor is it independent when I choose to do right or
[30:20]I choose to do wrong the Imam says your very choice to
[30:24]do right or your very choice to do wrong is a mix
[30:26]of both so when I choose to come to the to do
[30:30]good I choose to pray I choose to do it is a
[30:36]mix of and in the middle how the say that when I
[30:43]do when I do something it is attributed to me how I
[30:47]have free will and thus Allah subhah wa ta'ala attributes the sin
[30:53]to me I am responsible for my sin and my actions because
[30:56]Allah gave me free will and I was the one that chose
[31:02]to do the har so in that way I do have free
[31:06]will so there is what there is some choice but at the
[31:08]same time there isn't complete free choice how in that it's Allah
[31:14]subh that predestined that I have pre free choice who the one
[31:20]that gave me free choice Allah who's the one that gave me
[31:24]life Allah and we have to pay close attention to this fact
[31:29]that many people think that Allah subhana tala just created us and
[31:32]that's it I'm living no brothers and sisters every second of my
[31:36]life I need Allah to give me further life so if Allah
[31:41]cuts the source of life for one second I will die it's
[31:45]just like a power generator if you want a light bulb to
[31:47]stay on you can't just turn it on and then the light
[31:51]turns on and then turn it off it's not going to stay
[31:53]on as soon as you turn it off the light bu the
[31:54]light bulb goes so every second of light needs what needs power
[32:00]it needs a source this is how we are every second of
[32:05]my life I need Allah subhana to constantly give me life give
[32:08]me life give me life give me life so who's the one
[32:12]that gave me life Allah who's the one that gave me free
[32:13]choice who's the one that gave me the free will who's the
[32:19]one that created me as an autonomous human being Allah didn't give
[32:23]this wall the Free Will right he gave me so that's why
[32:28]you find my very free will my very choice and decision my
[32:31]actions are attributed to me and to Allah how are they attributed
[32:37]to me is that I make the decision at the end of
[32:38]the day but who was the one that gave me that free
[32:42]choice it was Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Allah is watching Allah has
[32:46]given me a rope that's the source Allah subhana can cut that
[32:52]Source any second and because he has complete control over me there
[32:55]is no tough wheel don't think you're independent from Allah Allah can
[32:59]cut and take your life and your free will any second and
[33:03]if he takes it it's gone so how do you have Free
[33:04]Will from Allah so those their mistake was this were independent of
[33:08]Allah no if you were independent of Allah you would not exist
[33:13]every second of your free will is from Allah so you rely
[33:15]on Allah but at the same time Allah didn't Allah all he
[33:19]did was he gave you the free will he didn't make the
[33:21]decision for you so the IM says a middle course [Music] Allah
[33:30]we need him why do we need him what's his role Allah
[33:34]is the one that constantly gives me the free the free choice
[33:37]and at the same time there is Free Will why because Allah
[33:42]just gives me the free the free will he doesn't choose for
[33:45]me the decision I made so that's why we understand based on
[33:52]this second view how both went wrong there isn't Force because the
[33:56]said Allah makes the decision for you wrong Allah gives you free
[34:00]will but he doesn't Mak it the says the Free Will is
[34:04]from us Allah created us and that's it the Free Will is
[34:06]from me no your free will and your opportunity to choose between
[34:11]right and wrong is being constantly given to you by Allah he
[34:13]could cut the source anytime he wants so that's why he has
[34:18]complete control over us if that was clear muham and that's why
[34:30]these say when we go to the Quran and those verses that
[34:33]the and used to justify his actions that seem to be leading
[34:43]to predestination they say this is how we do the correct of
[34:46]these verses Allah says you cannot decide unless Allah decides what do
[34:52]he mean does he mean Allah makes a decision for you no
[34:56]what Allah means is that you cannot decide unless Allah gives you
[34:59]free will can this wall decide can this microphone decide why because
[35:05]Allah didn't want it to decide Allah didn't give it free will
[35:09]Allah didn't want this microphone to decide Allah decided and wanted that
[35:15]I have free will and only then I can choose so my
[35:19]free will depends on Allah that's what he means it's very simple
[35:25]very very simple the other verse [Applause] you did not throw it
[35:31]was Allah why who's the one that gave you the muscles who's
[35:33]the one that gave you the chance to throw it was Allah
[35:37]who's the one that created you a human being and you could
[35:39]move and you could make your own decisions Allah so don't think
[35:43]that when you threw it was all you Allah gave you that
[35:45]power Allah gave you the free choice and the free will the
[35:51]other verse no one could believe if Allah permits Allah permits by
[35:58]what by giving them free choice so no being can believe unless
[36:02]Allah gives them life and gives them free choice gives them free
[36:07]will only then they could decide only then they could choose he
[36:11]guides whoever he wants and he misguides whoever he wants Allah gives
[36:15]the Free Will and in that way it's as if he's the
[36:18]one that's guiding he's the one that's misguiding because he's the one
[36:21]that gave the Free Will so Allah doesn't make the decision he
[36:26]only provides us with Free Will and that's why you find the
[36:31]IM says this is the second view of what the IM means
[36:35]by the third view of what this Hadith means is that the
[36:43]say that what the IM means here is that anytime I want
[36:49]to achieve a desired goal this goal depends on a few means
[36:55]maybe 100 means and anytime anytime at Le at least one of
[36:59]the means is voluntary then the entire Act is voluntary even if
[37:05]some of the means were forced how let me give you an
[37:08]example to illustrate let's say that I want to come to the
[37:14]husia tonight and between me and the husse there are 100 steps
[37:17]100 steps I have to take 100 steps to reach the husse
[37:22]now I could come voluntarily walk all the 100 steps and enter
[37:27]and people would say he vol voluntarily come no one forced him
[37:31]correct yes let's say someone he forces me to walk 99 of
[37:38]the steps and then right before the 100 the final step he
[37:41]leaves me and goes and then I voluntarily take the final step
[37:48]can I say I was forced to come to the husia can
[37:53]I no kind of not really can I say I voluntarily came
[37:59]yes I could say I voluntarily came and at the same time
[38:03]there was some Force so as you can see the force here
[38:06]did not make the ACT involuntary it was still Vol because that
[38:12]final step I based on my decision I made it I could
[38:14]have just turned my head back and go back the 99 steps
[38:19]right so the say take the same idea and apply with Allah
[38:24]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in order for me to do a good
[38:26]deed or a bad deed I can't just wish it and it
[38:29]happens there are many means some of the means are involuntary but
[38:34]as long as one of the means is voluntary you cannot say
[38:39]that I was forced at the same time you cannot say I'm
[38:41]independent because who was the one that provided the means for you
[38:47]many of the means Allah so let's say I want to come
[38:48]to Theus right Allah subhana T I need him I'm not independent
[38:54]because Allah gave me life Allah Gave Me free Will Allah gave
[38:56]me a car Allah gave gave me power Allah gave me wealth
[39:00]to buy a car and come right so this was all Allah
[39:02]subhanahu wa taala but at the same time it was me it
[39:08]was my decision to come so the IM says Allah didn't force
[39:14]you because as long as one of these steps was voluntary you
[39:17]were not forced even if you were forced in many other things
[39:20]but you were not independent as well because some things in some
[39:25]mans it wasn't up to you Allah provided it for you for
[39:28]example when I commit Haram let's say I want to listen to
[39:31]music who's the one that provided me with ears Allah who's the
[39:36]one that gave me hands who's the one that gave me wealth
[39:39]to go and buy the CD who's the one that gave me
[39:43]power to press play Allah so can I blame Allah you're the
[39:45]one that provided me with CDs if you hadn't created CDs there
[39:50]would be no music right can I blame Allah no why because
[39:54]at the end of the day I voluntarily pressed play and listen
[39:59]and that's why you find that I'm not completely independent of Allah
[40:04]if Allah hadn't gave me the chance to do that sin or
[40:06]do that good deed I could have never done it but at
[40:10]the same time this does not mean that I was forced it
[40:15]was completely voluntary it was 100% my choice no one forced me
[40:19]to do it so that's why the verses that speak about Allah
[40:22]guiding people or Allah misguiding people what do these verses mean Allah
[40:26]guides people meaning Allah he placed the means at his disposal Allah
[40:32]sends me a good friend a good influence and then I based
[40:38]on my free will I decide wasn't it Allah that guided me
[40:40]but did he force me no he just sent me the means
[40:46]whether I accept or not that's up to me so when Allah
[40:51]sends the means we say God guided him let's say for someone
[40:54]Allah didn't send him good friends he had a bad family he
[40:56]didn't send him good friends he didn't you know uh he wasn't
[41:01]raised in a a good family he didn't put in Islamic school
[41:04]and he was raised bad was this person can't we say Allah
[41:09]misguided him yes but did Allah force him no Allah didn't put
[41:11]the necessary the the the necessary means at his disposal but he
[41:17]could have still believed and that's why you find many people they're
[41:19]they're grown up in bad families but yet they're good why because
[41:22]they still have free will they're still autonomous no one is forcing
[41:26]them so when Allah guides someone he sends him the good means
[41:32]when Allah misguides someone he sends him the bad means but the
[41:35]decision at the end of the day is up to me I
[41:39]make the decision so that's why the IM says Allah doesn't make
[41:41]the decision for you he only provides the means and don't think
[41:46]that it was all you if it wasn't Allah sending that good
[41:48]friend and if it wasn't Allah subhana tala making those means available
[41:53]for you you would have never had the chance to do good
[41:55]so there is no jebla no Force nor is there to with
[42:00]complete independence of Allah subh you see how simple he solves this
[42:08]dilemma for us and all matters of Faith brothers and sisters they
[42:13]cannot be solved but through and that's why in one Hadith in
[42:17]one Hadith the IM he tells one of his companions he tells
[42:23]go and tell fan and fan there was two people in the
[42:26]city of Medina that they claim they were Scholars and they didn't
[42:30]go back to he tells them go search amongst the world go
[42:34]to the Far West and go to the Far East you will
[42:38]not find the answer to the verses of the Quran and to
[42:44]the Islamic dilemas but through you will not find knowledge but through
[42:48]any knowledge of the Quran that you see is all through you
[42:54]will not find anything but through all these dilemas brothers and sisters
[42:58]all these matters of faith can only be solved by going through
[43:04]and that's one reason why Allah subhana tala made the Quran difficult
[43:11]to understand so we will always be in need of if you
[43:13]don't go back toit you're not going to understand the Quran this
[43:18]is mentioned in thei Allah subhana made the Quran difficult so that
[43:20]we can never say we don't need I can understand the Quran
[43:22]no you can't the Quran without we cannot understand it we will
[43:28]give the wrong of the Quran without Allah wanted us to always
[43:32]be needy of he put the knowledge of the Quran with and
[43:36]that's why we will always have to go back to and that's
[43:44]why theith he said I will leave two things for you the
[43:53]and and if as long as you adhere to both of them
[43:57]you will never be misled you will never go astr and they
[44:04]will never ever separate so don't think that you the Quran suffices
[44:10]you need and we see how some other schools of thought once
[44:16]they abandoned they fell into so many problems is there predestination or
[44:20]are we a dependent of Allah no one could solve this but
[44:26]our IMS it's this neither this nor this these are two extremes
[44:29]you have to be moderate it's a mix of the two and
[44:35]we explain based on the three theories what he meant by I
[44:40]ask Allah subhah waala to accept our to bless us all during
[44:47]this beautiful month of Ramadan to accept our and our and I
[44:51]ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to give us the power that we
[44:57]continue the strength fasting and doing the necessary during this month of
[45:03]Ramadan [Music] [Music]
