[0:25]respected brothers and sisters it is the last day of the year

[0:33]2020 and i am seeing many people are reflecting on the year

[0:41]2020 the year that we have been living through year that we

[0:46]experienced a global pandemic and i notice many people referring to this

[0:56]past year as a year of difficulty as a year of challenges

[1:00]and indeed it is and it was a year of challenges for

[1:06]many people but it was also a year of blessings it was

[1:11]also a year of mercy it was a year that allah gave

[1:17]us an opportunity one of the greatest gifts that allah has given

[1:23]us is the gift of time and allah swears and makes a

[1:30]qasim makes an oath by the time that allah has given us

[1:36]allah says means the time the era it's a very one of

[1:53]these shortest surahs in the quran surah al asr it consists of

[1:57]three verses however these three verses carry a very big meaning allah

[2:04]says by time indeed mankind is in loss indeed we realize that

[2:16]time is something that we could never take back year twenty twenty

[2:20]is ending we are never going to be able to go back

[2:24]to 2020 just as we are never able to go back to

[2:28]2019 and 2018 and the years before this is a time that

[2:33]is gone and our time our clock is ticking just as we

[2:41]see the clock is ticking towards the new year our clock is

[2:46]ticking our time is running out in this life there's no guarantee

[2:52]that we will survive the next day the next hour the next

[2:56]month the next year we don't know what's going to happen so

[3:00]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the quran indeed mankind is in

[3:07]loss because time is the proof that we are in loss however

[3:13]there are ways that that time that we are losing can be

[3:19]a time of blessing a time of mercy except for those who

[3:25]have faith that time that they lost is not gone it's not

[3:29]a time that was lost they can benefit from the hour that

[3:34]was gone and those who have righteous deeds and stand for truth

[3:46]and justice and they are patient these are four ingredients for success

[3:54]according to time management in the quran have faith do good deeds

[4:05]stand for the truth stand for justice and be patient if you

[4:10]have these qualities anytime that is lost will not be a time

[4:15]that is gone other than those four qualities any moment that you

[4:21]lost that is a moment that will not be able to help

[4:23]you that is a moment that will not be able to benefit

[4:26]you so as we are reflecting on the beginning of a new

[4:32]year 2021 and i saw a meme a joke going around online

[4:38]saying that 2020 was such a difficult year that it defeated us

[4:44]it defeated humanity many people lost many suffered and therefore 2021 meaning

[4:51]2021 it won the war against humanity but the fact of the

[4:57]matter my dear brothers and sisters there's no such a thing as

[5:01]a good year or a bad year yes it's all about our

[5:04]relative experiences but allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has made a system in

[5:12]this life where every day in our life is a day of

[5:15]test this test that we are all experiencing it may be a

[5:20]more difficult test than previous years or for other people those previous

[5:25]years were more difficult it all depends on how you deal with

[5:29]the test allah says in the quran every single one of us

[5:38]has to be tested no one can leave this life without being

[5:43]tested some people are tested through a pandemic other people are tested

[5:48]through diseases other people are tested through poverty so we should not

[6:09]come and say 2020 was a horrible year for some people 2020

[6:14]was a year of blessing because it all depends on how you

[6:18]deal with the test how you treat the test for let me

[6:22]give the example of the imams of the ahlul bayt for some

[6:27]the day of ashura was the worst day possible for imam al

[6:31]hussain it was the day that he was killed but for imam

[6:34]al hussain coming to look at it through if you look at

[6:38]that day compared to the eternal being and living of imam al

[6:43]hussain the day of ashura was the day that made imam al

[6:47]hussain eternalized so a test going through a test doesn't necessarily mean

[6:53]that it has to be a bad experience it has to be

[6:56]a difficult time and the consequences of that test are going to

[7:01]be difficult and negative no perhaps you go through a test you

[7:07]are tested but then you pass the test and then you say

[7:10]thank god i was tested because if i had not been tested

[7:15]with that difficult test then i would not have been able to

[7:18]be elevated in my ranks in paradise how does allah elevate people's

[7:24]ranks in paradise people's ranks are elevated through tests just as in

[7:28]this life we are elevated we are upgraded you pass one class

[7:34]and you go to the more difficult class how through the tests

[7:38]that we face in life so a test is not a bad

[7:40]thing for the mutman for the believer a test is not a

[7:43]bad thing also we have to keep in mind that there were

[7:47]many good things that happened there were many times that were spent

[7:52]with family this year 2020 due to the quarantine many families got

[7:58]to discover one another they got to spend time with one another

[8:01]they got to cook with one another eat with one another work

[8:04]from home parents and children husbands and wives they're spending more time

[8:09]with one another and this is a blessing many people they were

[8:13]missing gout on this blessing so we have to make it a

[8:18]habit to look at what's positive in life because there are many

[8:22]positive things that happen in life it's all about your attitude towards

[8:27]life if you have a negative approach towards life then everything's going

[8:32]to be negative you look at the cup half empty then it's

[8:35]always going to be half empty but if you have if you

[8:38]change your attitude if you have a more grateful more thankful attitude

[8:43]and you start looking at the blessings that you have in life

[8:46]then you're going to see that you're you're drowning in god's blessings

[8:52]and in fact we are aren't i alive today aren't i eating

[9:00]and drinking yes we all experience difficulties here and there but we

[9:06]have so many opportunities we have so many blessings and the fact

[9:10]that you are alive means that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given

[9:15]you an opportunity day another moment another hour to seek nearness to

[9:20]allah subhanahu to build your afterlife so you have the opportunity to

[9:26]build the eternal life the everlasting life this life will end for

[9:31]everyone whether someone suffered from the whether someone they got tested positive

[9:38]for the covid virus whether someone went through poverty whether someone lost

[9:46]a loved one everyone's going to eventually lose in this life the

[9:51]afterlife the akhirah that is the eternal life that is what we

[9:55]should be building for so it doesn't matter whether you are successful

[10:00]in this life in terms of material success or not or whether

[10:03]you made it or you passed away in this life it all

[10:07]depends on how you left this life and what you have prepared

[10:11]for the akhirah imam ali alaihis salam in a very beautiful and

[10:17]eloquent statement he divides this dunya this life into three days people

[10:24]live for thousands of days people live for eighty ninety years imam

[10:29]ali divides it into three days and if we make this statement

[10:35]a part of our lives our motto the way we live our

[10:39]life we will see that the way we live our life and

[10:42]our experiences are going to be much more different he says the

[10:50]dunya is three days a day that passed a day in the

[10:58]past and it's not going to come back in a day that

[11:07]is the present a day that you are living so that is

[11:10]the day that you have to take advantage of and there's another

[11:19]day in the future that you don't know if this day belongs

[11:23]to you you might be living you might not be living so

[11:27]it's not a day that's guaranteed for you as the day of

[11:35]the past it is a wise day that disciplines us that admonishes

[11:41]us that raises me that gives me experiences my yesterday should be

[11:46]an experience for me it should be i i should be learning

[11:50]from yesterday the had another hadith says the one whose today is

[11:59]equal to his yesterday or her yesterday then this person has been

[12:03]ripped off because your days are numbered your days are going to

[12:07]finish but you today are the same as you were yesterday then

[12:11]that means you have not advance so that means you are losing

[12:14]so he says yesterday is a day that is hakim that is

[12:20]wise and disciplines you as the day that you are in now

[12:31]this is a friend that is saying it's farewell your friend is

[12:35]with you you could take advantage you could use that friend to

[12:38]your to to your benefit but that friend is leaving meaning the

[12:44]day is not going to remain forever opportunities don't last forever right

[12:48]now the sun goes down we're going to start another day so

[12:58]and as for tomorrow all that you have in it is hope

[13:03]you don't own anything from tomorrow you don't own anything some of

[13:07]us we plan what am i going to do what's going to

[13:10]happen we plan the days by the hours and the minutes and

[13:14]the seconds but all it is in reality is it's hope take

[13:19]advantage of the day today don't worry about tomorrow don't worry about

[13:22]the rizq the sustenance tomorrow yes we're supposed to plan however we're

[13:28]supposed to worry about today don't worry about tomorrow and allah subhanahu

[13:33]wa ta'ala if you are alive if allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has

[13:36]destined that you remain alive tomorrow then your risk and your sustenance

[13:40]and everything else will come on that day so my dear brothers

[13:44]and sisters we need to take this hadith from amir al mumineen

[13:48]and try to benefit from it yesterday serves only as lessons history

[13:53]serves as lessons for us today is an opportunity that's flying by

[13:57]and tomorrow is just hope tomorrow i don't i don't have control

[14:01]of what will happen tomorrow i don't really know what will happen

[14:05]tomorrow so 2020 is behind us let us take lessons from 2020

[14:16]let us get closer to subhanahu wa ta'ala perhaps these tests and

[14:21]these challenges that we're facing in life these are all reminders are

[14:25]all wake up calls for us to get closer to allah subhanahu

[14:29]wa ta'ala and allah does not just want people to suffer today

[14:34]some people oh it was a horrible year it was a year

[14:37]of suffering no allah doesn't want people to suffer if allah has

[14:42]placed you in a difficult challenge that means allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[14:47]either wants you to take a lesson from it or allah subhanahu

[14:51]wa ta'ala wants to upgrade you wants to raise your status because

[14:54]of going through this test or allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wants to

[14:58]compensate you in the akhirah and yes there are some people that

[15:03]the challenges the the difficulties that they face this is a discipline

[15:09]a punishment because it's it should be a wake up call as

[15:12]long as you're still alive you have a chance to fix yourself

[15:16]you have a fact you have a chance to change the course

[15:20]of your life so we need to my dear brothers and sisters

[15:25]we need to look for a better tomorrow we need to have

[15:29]new year's resolutions we need to plan for the new year and

[15:33]we need to change change some of the bad habits that we

[15:37]have we need to take advantage of the time time is a

[15:42]blessing i know many people during this past year while they were

[15:48]quarantined while they were at home while they were you know they

[15:51]had more time at home some people they spent it all either

[15:55]sleeping wasting time playing games not doing anything beneficial and there were

[16:01]others that were very productive every day they're producing something every day

[16:07]they were doing something that is benefiting them their family their community

[16:12]their society and this is how we have to be my dear

[16:16]brothers and sisters when we wish for a person's life to be

[16:21]mubarak a life of blessing that means we wish for a life

[16:26]of productivity we wish for a life productivity in many ways don't

[16:30]only think that productivity is if you have more money in your

[16:33]bank account that means you're productive no productivity could be in terms

[16:36]of spirituality in terms of ibadah maybe year 2021 should be a

[16:42]year where i increase my worship to allah maybe i start praying

[16:46]salat al lail maybe i start fasting more maybe i start giving

[16:50]more charity maybe i start focusing more on my dua on my

[16:54]prayers on my supplication one small change it could make a huge

[17:00]impact in your life or maybe i could make a change in

[17:04]terms of my relationships the husband and the wife the children the

[17:10]family spending more quality time with one another many people this year

[17:16]the year is ending a new year is beginning and their loved

[17:20]ones are gone their loved ones are under the soil they buried

[17:24]them because they did not survive this year and that serves as

[17:29]a lesson for us to appreciate those who are in our lives

[17:33]to spend quality time with those who are in our lives my

[17:38]dear brothers and sisters let year 2021 be the best year i've

[17:44]ever lived in my life maybe the past maybe the years before

[17:49]i did not do my best but let this next year be

[17:52]a year of blessing year of closeness to allah make that promise

[17:57]make that bond with allah if you make that promise allah will

[18:03]guide you you strive for the cause of allah allah will guide

[18:12]you allah will open the doors so that you will be able

[18:15]to reach the mercy of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala plan to do

[18:19]good plan to help your neighbors your friends allah says in the

[18:24]quran sometimes some people they plan they want to do good but

[18:32]they say yeah let's wait until other people do it and then

[18:35]we will do it no this the changing of the hour change

[18:41]the beginning of a new year is the biggest wake up call

[18:45]for us that we shouldn't wait if you want to do something

[18:48]good do it right away allah says those who are who rush

[18:55]to do good those who rush to do good they're going to

[19:00]be rushed into paradise they're going be placed into paradise quickly other

[19:05]people will have to wait so let us if you plan on

[19:11]doing something good if you've made a new year's resolution if you've

[19:15]planned on changing your life start today don't wait tomorrow start tonight

[19:20]before the new year so that you say i will end off

[19:25]a year in good and that will push me to a good

[19:29]start in another hadith from amir al mumineen ali ibn abi talib

[19:34]talib he says he says every new day that passes that day

[19:48]speaks to you that day talks to you what does it tell

[19:52]you it tells you i'm a new day and i'm a witness

[19:56]upon you that moment this hour it's going to be a witness

[20:00]for me or against me on the day of judgment say what

[20:08]is good and act upon what is good if you do good

[20:16]i will be witness for you on the day of judgement allah

[20:20]subhanahu wa ta'ala will make the day speak just like the objects

[20:24]will speak the day will speak and it will say this person

[20:28]on this such and such day such and such hour in this

[20:31]praise gave charity did something good do that that day will witness

[20:37]for you because you will not see this day until the day

[20:45]of judgement when it comes as a witness for you my dear

[20:49]brothers and sisters one of the names of the day of judgement

[20:53]one of the titles and descriptions of the day of judgement is

[20:57]it is the day of regret warned them of the day of

[21:05]regret when everything has been written down when that's it you can't

[21:10]on the day of judgment you can't go back allah describes the

[21:13]kuffar they say let me go back so that maybe i can

[21:21]do some good deeds maybe i could help out myself in the

[21:25]akhirah and then the reply comes that's it the moment allah subhanahu

[21:38]wa ta'ala gives us until the moment we leave this life and

[21:41]we don't know when that moment is let us do good with

[21:45]that moment with that time that we have the day day of

[21:51]judgment is called yawm al hasrah one day prophet musa alaihi salaam

[21:56]he entered with some of his companions into a cave a dark

[22:01]cave where they were not able to see anything but they felt

[22:05]under them there were something rock or jewelry or gems whatever it

[22:12]was they didn't know what it was because it was so dark

[22:15]so some people they started carrying and gathering with them other people

[22:19]they said i don't even know what it is why should i

[22:21]carry musa in the cave he tells them whoever carries will regret

[22:29]and whoever does not carry will also regret they didn't know what

[22:34]he talking about some of them they carried not knowing what it

[22:37]is and others they did not carry once they came out of

[22:41]the cave they looked and they saw that what they were carrying

[22:45]were gems gems rubies and beautiful gems so he tells them those

[22:54]who carried will regret and that is what happened the ones who

[22:57]carried they were regretful they said why didn't we carry more we

[23:01]should have carried you know i carried one of these gems i

[23:04]should have carried two or three more and the ones who didn't

[23:07]carry they were regretful why didn't they take anything and then musa

[23:13]he tells them this is exactly how this dunya is when you

[23:17]leave this dunya every day in this dunya is a day of

[23:21]regret if you did good you're also going to be regretful because

[23:26]you're going to say why did i why didn't i do more

[23:29]i had all this money sitting in my bank account when i

[23:32]could have donated to the masjid when i could have helped an

[23:34]orphan when i could have fed a family my risk my sustenance

[23:38]is coming to me it wouldn't have harmed me and the ones

[23:42]who didn't do anything they will be very regretful that they missed

[23:47]out on an opportunity allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave them a whole

[23:51]lifetime and that lifetime was wasted not doing anything good allah gave

[23:56]us allah gave people sixty seventy eighty years what good did you

[24:01]do with us let us ask ourselves what did i do in

[24:06]the last year 2020 what did i accomplish what good did i

[24:10]do if i did something good then i should do more then

[24:15]this should encourage me to do more i shouldn't fall back and

[24:19]if i didn't do anything good then if i'm alive today i

[24:23]should tell myself then allah has given me another day allah is

[24:27]giving me another opportunity to do good so let me do good

[24:32]my dear brothers and sisters 2020 is coming to an end and

[24:38]time continues let us make a promise with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[24:43]that we will amend that we will fix our lives that we

[24:47]will reform our lives in terms of social in terms of relationships

[24:52]with others with family with loved ones in terms of our relationship

[24:56]with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in terms of giving and helping out

[25:01]those who are in need this is the time that we should

[25:05]help out this is the time that we should give and yes

[25:09]my dear brothers and sisters let us thank allah thank him for

[25:14]everything some people are ending this year by complaining by nagging yes

[25:19]it wasn't easy but we have to be grateful have to thank

[25:23]allah say alhamdulillah we say alhamdulillah yohmadu alamkruhin suwah the only one

[25:32]who is praised in difficulty is allah praise allah be grateful to

[25:38]allah because when you're grateful when you're thankful allah will give you

[25:42]more my dear brothers and sisters let us pray to allah subhanahu

[25:51]wa ta'ala pray that the future will be an easier future a

[25:56]brighter future a future with iman a future with closeness to allah

[26:01]subhanahu wa ta'ala and my dear brothers and sisters let us pray

[26:05]for those who did not survive let us pray for those who

[26:09]are under the soil now they are waiting for our duas they

[26:12]are waiting for our prayers everyday recite a for the souls of

[26:17]the everyday recite quran one page a few verses for those who

[26:24]are not with us anymore one verse of the quran will help

[26:27]them send salawat upon them ask allah to have mercy on them

[26:34]when we do these things allah will bless our lives i would

[26:39]like to finally congratulate you all on the new year and i

[26:45]ask allah to bless you all and to give all of the

[26:52]and the believers a brighter healthier prosperous future a future of closeness

[26:59]to a future of getting near to allah and a future of

[27:06]satisfaction of allah
