[0:00]over the Himalayas on a line of james miller manner aim and
[0:06]reliable enemy no sir that was mrs a villain be our hot
[0:09]when Marceline say given a whenever you have in-laws in a Muhammad
[0:19]what I have eight hit the Union upon his max mean latitude
[0:25]I'm anuradha hinder our leader I am in between sisters and bridges
[0:36]in announcer Dominic mark long it was indeed a pleasure to be
[0:43]here in this conference from what i remember i think the last
[0:48]time i attended was about 12 of 10 or tells 12 years
[0:55]ago later on over schedules didn't work out but in al hamdulillah
[0:59]tonight i'm able to be here although on the way from Canada
[1:07]to hear there was currently a problem you know they called me
[1:11]in for questioning for two hours which is it they haven't done
[1:16]for many many years I thought my name was clear but anyway
[1:21]but al hamdulillah i'm here at the end from what I understood
[1:24]from the communication that i had with the brothers from the conference
[1:29]this is going to be a workshop session and so i'm not
[1:37]really prepared for a straight lecture as such and so what I
[1:42]would like to do is like to start with asking questions so
[1:49]that you can start the process and then I'll come later on
[1:52]when we talk about this issue of you know Muslim identity in
[1:58]the Muslim on the more in the modern world you know let
[2:02]us see what are the very common basis by which the people
[2:10]relate to themselves and form an identity so if we can get
[2:15]you know maybe some young people on both sides to raise their
[2:19]hands and we get some answers and then we go through it
[2:28]the question was you know how do you identify yourself there are
[2:35]some very basic foundations on which people identify themselves and if we
[2:41]get an can get a list of that then we can proceed
[2:46]and see what is the Islamic perspective on that issue yes sister
[2:56]the culture okay that comes very later on but only way that's
[3:01]one of the yes hijab would not be an identity it would
[3:16]not be a manifestation of her identity but not an identity by
[3:28]itself you would not identify yourself as you know a person who
[3:36]wears hijab yes Oh gender ok let's put it down yes you
[3:55]you believe in practice of faith is one basis ok you behavior
[4:02]towards this long so you're a Muslim so your identity is Islam
[4:12]not behavior ok and so we go back we go back to
[4:15]the issue of fate anything else yes where you are formed ok
[4:33]that's the beginning when you are born how do you relate yourself
[4:40]to whom your family your first identity the first standard or level
[4:47]of identity starts with family you're born in a family and this
[4:54]is how you relate yourself this is the you know very basic
[4:58]you know foundation of identity of human beings but then when you
[5:03]grow up gradually you come to realize that ok I have a
[5:10]family maybe even relatives who are part of the extended family but
[5:17]then the tribal identity comes in so the family would be the
[5:23]very beginning and then the tribal you know identity comes in you
[5:29]are crazy you are from house or husband eyes I don't want
[5:37]to use more than names here in case somebody is sitting in
[5:40]those 0 it talks about our tribe no okay so it is
[5:46]very natural you you would relate to the group which has the
[5:53]same tribal background the language for example would be the common between
[6:01]the tribe or the people of you know that kabila and then
[6:05]we move further you know sometimes we identify and identify ourselves through
[6:12]the region's i am from this part of the world or from
[6:18]that part of the world i am from you know New York
[6:24]I'm from California so willage or the town or the state becomes
[6:30]one another level of layered layer of identity then we come to
[6:35]these modern concepts of the modern states you know people relate themselves
[6:40]to a nation especially after we have the system of passports so
[6:48]you are American you're canadian you are British your French your karate
[6:54]or your Syrian of your Iranian or running or Pakistani and so
[6:59]these are all different you know ways people look at themselves and
[7:03]when we look at all these these are all national you know
[7:10]way of looking at ourselves and identifying ourselves on those levels what
[7:18]is the Islamic perspective about it Islam doesn't necessarily say that these
[7:26]I identities are to be totally suppressed and shun no because that
[7:30]is a reality but then the true identity is something else and
[7:36]this is what I would like to go to this started from
[7:39]surah Hajj alot sooner number 49 is number 13 but a lost
[7:46]panel Adonis's eia one ass in the jalapeno cumin baccarin wanza that
[7:51]we have created you from a male and a female on two
[7:54]different levels the top seed would be that either the first to
[7:58]Adam and Eve that's all human being the children of Adam and
[8:01]Eve and on a different level it also means that we you
[8:06]know came to this dunya through or father his mother this is
[8:09]what I was saying the family identity is there it cannot be
[8:15]ignored Islam doesn't ignore that that you are part of that you
[8:19]know so-and-so family that is an important identity but then you move
[8:25]further all you're not only part of a family you're part of
[8:31]a ethnic group or a political cadena which has a language and
[8:36]the culture which are shared commonly by the families which are related
[8:41]to that I tribe and this is what most Panama's other dances
[8:48]which are now come ashore open water in it and then we
[8:50]divided you with after creating you from adam and eve of whom
[8:57]you our parents we divided you into different nations and within the
[9:02]nation's you have different adelia different tribes and so this is also
[9:07]in a way doing of a loss hannah tada we do not
[9:13]you know negate the layers of identity on the level of family
[9:17]on the level of Adilah on the level of having you know
[9:25]a group which has a common heritage but what is the important
[9:29]thing and this is an analysis which are now come show open
[9:37]Wakaba either we divided in into nations and tribes for what little
[9:44]alafu so that it becomes easy to identify one another and this
[9:51]is very we are saying that those levels of you know or
[9:56]basis of identity whether it is the family or the kabila and
[9:59]the tribe or the ethnic group that you belong to where you
[10:05]have common language and culture or the country that you belong to
[10:08]these are all fine we are not saying is that you totally
[10:14]you know ignore that but the point is that you know if
[10:17]LOM considers all this to be physical level of identity where you
[10:24]relate you yourself to the parents to the family to the stability
[10:30]to the ethnic group because of the common culture and language these
[10:36]are all fine but you know they are not really the basis
[10:40]of the identity that we are looking for when I say that
[10:47]Islam did not come to eliminate all these different levels of identity
[10:52]let me say that when the prophet Micah migrated from Mecca to
[10:58]Medina he found two tribes major tries their house and hostage you
[11:04]know he didn't just say okay from today all of you are
[11:10]just Muslims forget about this identity of being old and hazardous so
[11:14]that was still maintained but there was a higher you know level
[11:22]of identity being imposed there which became more common for example when
[11:28]we look at the city of kufa this is not an ancient
[11:33]city in a way it was actually built during the early days
[11:36]of the seller fat era and it's interesting that the neighborhoods of
[11:41]Kufa was defined and established based on the different Kabila's which come
[11:49]from different parts of you know Fars or Yemen or other areas
[11:56]and settle down there that was more or less a garrison city
[11:59]that is where the Muslim army would station in order to continue
[12:03]their conquest towards farce not only that if you look at the
[12:09]army of emil manin ali bin ABI poly but it's a lot
[12:16]of Saddam in 15 they're also some of the troops within the
[12:22]larger army of a middle momineen were divided on tribal lines and
[12:31]the leaders of the Cabal was made you know in charge of
[12:35]those troops within the army of a middle nominee and so it's
[12:41]not that Islam came to totally eliminate all these identities it's only
[12:47]it's important to understand why a loss Hannah what Allah created us
[12:53]you know between sure when I by nations and tribes these are
[12:58]not really the there is no real value in it it's more
[13:05]an administrative each issue if I make it you know if I
[13:08]can make this very simple is you know if you go to
[13:11]the library especially University Library where they all bounded books you know
[13:20]you don't have the titles on the spine but you have a
[13:23]level there with the numbers and alphabets you know so you have
[13:28]to go and find out this is the book you're looking for
[13:31]this is the number or the reference of it and this is
[13:36]I will be able to go to the floor or the area
[13:41]and the shelf in the library and find that book but that
[13:45]the the level given to the book on the spine is very
[13:52]important to find that book to identify that book but it doesn't
[13:56]really tell you what is inside it or what is the worth
[14:02]of that book and all these layers of identity that Hannah Madonna
[14:06]has given to us belonging to a family belonging to Khadijah belonging
[14:11]to an athlete group where we have common language and culture these
[14:16]are all fine but these are all later our food so that
[14:20]we can easily know one another it is no value more than
[14:27]that label on the spine of the book the real worth of
[14:29]the book is what is inside it and that is where most
[14:33]panel at all and that iodine it comes to this point where
[14:36]he says in our Karama comiendo law at Arkham the most honorable
[14:42]person and this is where we come to the spiritual identity and
[14:46]identity which which has an everlasting value it's not our family you
[14:53]know affiliation it's not the tribal affiliation it's not the cultural ethnic
[14:58]affiliation it's not the national you no affiliation it is actually our
[15:06]faith in Iman that is our true identity which will be carried
[15:10]by us not only in this dunya but also in the asura
[15:17]and this is where we see the difference between the other layers
[15:21]of identity and this identity known as you know the faith-based identity
[15:28]which is the true identity and the valuable identity for us another
[15:35]difference between all other layers of identity and faith-based identity is the
[15:42]issue of java we didn't choose which family will be our family
[15:48]which part of the world will be born which kabila will be
[15:53]below we will you know belong to so this is a loss
[15:59]Hannah matala image he met this choice we didn't have a choice
[16:02]there but when it comes to faith this is something where we
[16:06]have to build that identity of ourselves by you know accepting the
[16:11]faith and practicing that and reaching to the level of loss Hannah
[16:20]what Allah gives you the kalama the honor and the respect not
[16:23]because of your color or your language or your family ties or
[16:27]tribal you know identity and this is this is something we have
[16:36]to keep all of them all the time in our minds but
[16:38]let me you know go back to the issue of modern situation
[16:46]that we have in us if I'm ask you another question here
[16:50]when we look at the Shia community and especially dealing with sheer
[16:54]community in North America how do these community identify themselves do they
[17:06]only identify themselves on the basis of the Dean and the mob
[17:13]of the faith or there are some other layers of identity that
[17:17]they have as a sheer community in North America ah so we're
[17:26]talking about the tribal or the cultural or ethnic ethnic affiliation we
[17:34]see different you know sheer centers and Milwaukee's in Canada and us
[17:42]some of them are run and best buy the people from Indian
[17:48]Pakistani background you have maracas of the honey brothers and sisters you
[17:57]have centers which belong to the Lebanese Shia community there are some
[18:02]centers which belong to the Iranian Shia community you have a roughly
[18:08]brothers also have their own centers all those the names do not
[18:14]always identify those centers on tribal you know lines but unreality you
[18:20]know that that is what's going on and what I would like
[18:27]to say is that I'm not saying that is wrong when you
[18:30]talk about the process of Hydra and migration this happens your people
[18:36]who come from let's save aniston because of the situation there of
[18:40]the Taliban people that will come from Iran and very large number
[18:43]during the days of Saddam and between the two wars during his
[18:50]time and they don't know the language of this land so for
[18:53]them to maintain that their faith they have to do things in
[18:59]their own you know language and so when we have these multiple
[19:03]ethnic-based she centers I'm not saying this identity is wrong that is
[19:11]that is actually something which happens when you have new immigrants coming
[19:15]to a new part of the world the only thing is that
[19:21]you can have your irani Center you can have your ribbon in
[19:23]center you can have your arafa center you can have your Pakistani
[19:29]center you know you can have your irani center but your minds
[19:33]and hearts should be open to accept anyone who is of the
[19:39]same Dean and mother from coming in and participating this is the
[19:46]main challenge that other levels of identity has to be you know
[19:50]on a lower level the men sense of identity has to be
[19:57]on the basis of our faith our Dean and Bubba as long
[20:01]as we are spiritually and mentally open for that you know that
[20:06]diversity of the sheer community will be there until the time will
[20:10]come when you will see probably not not our children but our
[20:14]grandchildren great-grandchildren they might be from any ethnic background but then they
[20:23]will be more what you call American than Lebanese more American than
[20:29]Pakistanis more American than era p they will be speaking the common
[20:34]language and that's where you will see kind of a merging of
[20:41]a sheer community in North America with a common language and common
[20:46]culture this is going to happen in the future we can facilitate
[20:50]that make it easy but remember we cannot force it and it
[20:57]cannot be done you know overnight and so this is very it
[21:00]to realize that there are different layers of identity you know we
[21:07]cannot suppress other layers you know totally but at the end we
[21:12]always have to see our Dean and motherhood is the main basis
[21:18]of our identity because that is what defines us and that is
[21:23]what we will be the basis of success of the community in
[21:25]this part of the world
