[0:00]haha [Applause] [Music] [Music] notice how Shah Ramadan comes and we fast

[0:21]the entire month how we restrict our food and our drink how

[0:24]we place so many constraints upon our desires and yet despite all

[0:29]of this struggle we still emerge from the holy month feeling completely

[0:32]renewed with a sense of Peace of Sakina of transcendence of calmness

[0:36]it's as if all of the heaviness of the world all the

[0:40]problems that we were dealing with before the holy month arrived become

[0:43]so small and manageable what changed this is really one of the

[0:48]beauties of the holy month because it shows you what can happen

[0:52]if you can just quiet the desires a little bit your entire

[0:54]life will be transformed if you just quiet the appetites of the

[1:00]Neffs if you just discipline the body you begin to see your

[1:03]true strength in Ramadan helps us do this because it tells you

[1:07]to fast from that which is most fundamental to your life food

[1:11]and drink we can all break our fasts very easily we can

[1:15]just take a sip of water no one would know right now

[1:18]we can open the fridge and have a bite and yet we

[1:22]don't if we can forsake something as fundamental as food and water

[1:27]for the sake of Allah God shows us how much more we

[1:29]can forsake of our attachments to the Dunya for the sake of

[1:33]our own Souls so that when Ramadan is complete you feel A

[1:35]Renewed sense of power over your body over yourself over your desires

[1:43]how often does the fasting person gain nothing from their fast except

[1:50]for thirst and hunger this shows that this isn't just about being

[1:53]hungry and thirsty there's something much deeper than that fasting of the

[1:58]heart is better than the fasting of the tongue in the fasting

[2:03]of the tongue is better than the fasting of the stomach this

[2:05]shows us that there are three levels the fast the first layer

[2:10]is the very superficial layer you fast from food and water this

[2:14]is what we all do but there is a deeper layer the

[2:18]second layer and that's to fast from what you should not see

[2:20]to fast from what you should not hear to fast from what

[2:26]you should not say fasting of the limbs so now there's a

[2:29]lucky Dimension to fasting yes backbiting is Haram even outside of Ramadan

[2:36]there's a specific injunction to pay very close attention to our senses

[2:42]to not let anything enter the self that is harmful to it

[2:45]that is not beautiful and then we finally arrive at the third

[2:48]layer the deepest layer of them all which is the fasting of

[2:53]the heart when the heart fasts from all which is not Allah

[2:56]and that's the deepest level this is where we understand truly and

[3:01]it's difficult to comprehend but it's to truly detach yourselves from the

[3:05]allurements of the Dunya the distractions to accept Allah to be at

[3:11]peace with God's will this is the fast of the heart so

[3:15]when we are fasting this is what we should be seeking out

[3:19]not the you know don't talk to me I got a headache

[3:22]I'm fasting asks rasulullah in this holy month what is the best

[3:29]act for us to do and we have a lot of amazing

[3:32]Amman as you know during this month we have to ask reading

[3:36]the holy Booker but the prophet responds abstain from that which God

[3:46]has forbidden meaning the Haram actions if my heart is plagued how

[3:50]can I receive how can I pour light into my heart if

[3:55]it is closed so you must fast in all of our other

[3:56]Amal we are doing when we pray we are performing the prayer

[4:00]when we are giving charity we are giving when we are doing

[4:03]Wicked we are in a state of doing something but with fasting

[4:08]it's the opposite we are refraining we are abstaining from something that

[4:13]is why the prophet says refraining from transgressing the limits of Allah

[4:18]it's about not doing it's about refraining often times in our spiritual

[4:23]journey we're looking to add something what can I add what can

[4:26]I do additionally when the beauty of Shah Ramadan isn't in what

[4:29]you are able to add but in what you're able to subtract

[4:35]how deep you are able to detach this is what you want

[4:37]to emerge from having worked towards a heightened sense of self-mastery Dunya

[4:42]becomes smaller in your eyes becomes easier for you to turn away

[4:47]from it because the chains upon your hearts have loosened even if

[4:50]a little bit Ramadan is that training camp but for the soul

[4:53]through it you find the strength to overcome yourself seduce another not

[5:02]me I've left you this is the sword of striving the sort

[5:08]of fasting that we are all aspiring towards in this holy month

[5:10]a fasting from that which is much deeper than food and water

[5:13]the fasting of the limbs and the fasting of the heart from

[5:17]all that is not Allah thank you [Music]
